Hello 2022! N
ew Year’s Day marks the beginning of 2022! It also serves as a point in time for many of us to start a change in our lives, like losing weight, eating healthier, or reconnecting with long-lost friends. Whether you call it a resolution or simply a goal to be a better you, the first step to making it happen is to write down what you want to accomplish and the steps it will take to get there. By setting a goal and keeping to your plan, you can make your goal or resolution a reality. Personally, our goal for 2022 is to spend more time with our children. With our two oldest sons now away in college, our nest is becoming emptier. We want to cherish family time as much as we can. Professionally, our goal is to continue to provide you with the best local news coverage available. Our City Media is proud to be South Florida’s leader in community news. Our team of experienced journalists is committed to bringing you the latest news on what’s happening in your community and your local schools. Be sure to check out our website www.ourcitymedia.com. Visit now and often to find a digital version with the same types of content found in our print magazines in multi-media format! While you are on the site, check out some of our other magazines. Our City Media has seven magazines serving Broward County, from the beach to the Everglades and everywhere in between. We truly hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as we enjoy printing it. WHAT'S TRENDING IN SOUTH FLORIDA? Historic low-interest rates, a bull market S&P, shifting workplace dynamics, and an influx of West Coast and Northeastern homebuyers’ relocating to participate in our open economy and favorable taxation; have all combined to fuel our strong and thriving real estate market. South Florida continues to be a popular destination for high-net-worth foreign nationals looking to own real estate in the U.S. But now, with large tech and financial firms moving their headquarters to South Florida, I don’t see the demand for South Florida living slowing down anytime soon.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
PROBATE AVOIDANCE
D
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
eath is inevitable but probate is not. This month’s column will explore what probate is and how to avoid it. What is Probate? Probate is a public lawsuit processed through the court system available to view by all who are curious, a court-supervised administration of debts and assets of a decedent (dead person). Each state has its own laws and procedures for probate, but most share several common elements. Judicial review of a will to be sure it was prepared in a legally sufficient manner; inventory of all assets and creditors; publishing a newspaper “Notice to Creditors” so creditors can file claims against estate assets; orderly prioritization of claims for payment; and accounting of assets and expenses of administration. Finally, there is the distribution of remaining assets to beneficiaries according to instructions in the will (or if no will, pursuant to state laws of intestate succession). Why Avoid Probate? It is expensive. Florida requires an attorney’s participation, and we know that attorneys cost money. Per statute, a reasonable fee for a simple probate is up to 3% of the value of all assets being administered. It is time consuming. Most probates often take 8 to 16 months during which time bank accounts are frozen, and assets may not be sold or distributed without permission from the Court. Add minor children, ownership of a business, substantial creditor claims, or unhappy beneficiaries, and these timeframes can easily double. How to Avoid Probate? If you have a simple straightforward plan to distribute assets after death, you can avoid probate by titling your assets so that they transfer automatically upon your death. Owning assets jointly with others, or with “TOD” (transfer on death) designations can avoid the need for probate. Also, being sure that insurance and retirement assets have beneficiaries and successor beneficiaries named is key. When probate avoidance alone is not sufficient to address your planning objectives, a revocable living trust (RLT) may be the right solution. Situations, such as with blended families, young or immature beneficiaries, or where concerns about creditors or remarriages require a more nuanced management of things after death, an RLT offers an excellent solution. These challenges can be addressed while also avoiding probate. Creating an RLT is more complex and therefore more expensive than just creating a will but offers enormous benefits in addition to saving the costs and length of the probate process. Not only can probate be avoided, but assets can be transferred in a way so that the beneficiary’s creditors, or divorcing spouse, cannot access the inherited assets. The RLT is also a perfect vehicle to manage assets for the benefit of young children or grandchildren or to keep the management of an ongoing business in the control of chosen and experienced hands. Meet with an experienced attorney who specializes in estate planning. Share your goals and concerns with the attorney. Listen carefully to the choices and solutions offered. Make a plan that is right for you. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

Recap
h, What A Night! Weston Town Center was hopping and popping on Saturday, December 4, 2021, as the City of Weston and the Weston Music Society hosted “Dancing Through the Decades” in Weston Town Center. The community response was very enthusiastic. Hundreds of people came to dance, sing along, observe and thoroughly enjoy music from the ’70s through today. There was a wide range of ages at the event as well as residents representing the wonderful diversity of our community, all enjoying the evening together. Pure Energy, their MC Andres and their performers kept the energy level off the charts and the audience responded with real enthusiasm. It was great to see families dancing together. The kids really enjoyed the professional dancers, especially the one on stilts! There were the toddlers bouncing and moving to the beat of the music, parents dancing with their kids, couples of all ages – something for everyone, and everyone loved it. State Representative Robin Bartleman and Weston City Commissioners Chris Eddy, Byron Jaffe, Mary Molina-MacFie, and Henry Mead dropped by to check out the music and join in on the fun. Weston Named 3rd Safest City in Florida By Jon Duka
T
here are many reasons people from around the country are flocking to live in Weston. One of them: we live in one of the safest cities in Florida. The website HomeSnacks ranked Weston as the third safest city in Florida. 2021 marks the highest-ranking Weston has attained since the rankings were first published in 2013. HomeSnacks claims to “paint a picture of what’s happening in a region based on
‘Friday Night Science’ — how’d you argue at a bar. To do that, they gather data from around the web to help determine a wide array of factors about where you live, things like safety, desirability, and culture.” This year’s rankings mark the seventh time the site has published its findings. Weston has been included on their list each year. Parkland was ranked first in Florida and is the only other Broward County city on the list. To determine the rankings, researchers reviewed several criteria to give a city its overall score. Cities were indexed and ranked on various crimes, including murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, car theft, and arson. Weston was near the top in the state for every category. According to the survey, Weston was the sixth safest city for violent crimes and the second safest city for property crime. According to the study, Weston had 395 total crimes in 202, a rate of 459 per 100,000 people. The low crime rate puts us 78% below the national average.
In addition to Parkland and Weston, the top ten included Marco Island, Longboat Key, Flagler Beach, Sanibel, Indian Harbour Beach, North Palm Beach, Bay Harbor Islands, and Lake Alfred. Parkland’s number-one ranking returned the city to its previous position as an extremely safe place despite the horrible school shooting three years ago. The same study found the most dangerous cities in Florida to be Florida City, Lake City, and Opa Locka, in that order. In HomeSnacks’ broader “Best Places to Live” scoring, Weston ranked highly for job opportunity, housing, safety, amenities, diversity, and education, with only affordability and commute time dragging down its scores. The study criteria included median home values, median income, population density, unemployment rate, commute time, crime, education levels, health insurance coverage, and poverty rates. It noted that Weston has a population of 70,614, a median income of $107,908, a median home value of $481,80000, and an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent.

any lenders require an additional payment added to their principal and interest payments every month, called mortgage insurance if borrowers apply a downpayment of less than 20% of the property value. As of November this year, the United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM), the #1 wholesale and purchase lender in America, announced the launch of MI Buster, eliminating mortgage insurance premiums for borrowers who put down more than 10%. This program gives buyers more purchasing power. With MI Buster, borrowers can now put less money down, and not be required to pay mortgage insurance. This product is available for conventional purchase loans starting at $200,000, as well as high balance loans with a Loan to Value ratio between 80.01 and 89.99. With mortgage rates on the rise, the elimination of MI can help borrowers, especially first-time homebuyers, get more home for their money, along with a more manageable monthly payment. “As rates tick up, and we shift to a purchase market, UWM continues to offer innovative solutions to help borrowers get into their dream homes,” said Mat Ishbia, president and CEO of UWM. “MI Buster allows independent mortgage brokers to put the purchase power back in borrower’s hands. By avoiding paying mortgage insurance with less money down, borrowers can now decide if they want to use those savings to purchase a bigger home, have a lower monthly payment or maybe even both.”

CAN DO KID
Weston’s Got Talent Meet Zofi
A
By Beverly Perkins
lthough she was born in Panama, Sofia Constantino grew up in Weston. And much like all the other kids, she began her education at Gator Run Elementary before moving on to Imagine Charter School, and now Cypress Bay High School (CBHS). She played with friends, went to the parks, and participated in an abundance of extracurricular and after-school activities, but it was at the age of 9 she found her true love in singing. From that early age it became clear that she would be connecting to the world through music and her presence on the stage. In 2017 Sofia’s parents knew they had to do something with their child’s gift, so they enrolled her in Rising Starz Academy. It was here that the determined young artist spent hours upon hours perfecting her craft. The music and performance training academy prepared her for what would come next. Rising Starz owner Vanessa Valentin saw her potential and placed in her in their Artist Development Program. She then recommended that Sofia was ready to take the next step which was to find a recording studio and an artist name; Vanquish Studios became the birth place of Zofi. “Zofi has an inner magic that exudes love, kindness, and joy to all those around her. She experiences life at its fullest and is able to capture every detail in her song writing and performances. We witnessed her amazing talent for singing at an early age and committed to supporting and encouraging her to become the star she has

dreamed,” said her parents Eugenia and Cesar. Between the keeping up with the rigorous academics at Weston’s A-rated high school, singing in the CBHS choir practice, and studying for SATs and ACTs, the ambitious high school junior spends 6-8 hours after school each week at the Davie recording studio where she has been diligently working on her music, her artistic profile, and recording her first song. The 17-years old is an authentic and passionate artist with a unique raspy strong voice who performs to inspire and composes lyrics to empower. Her influences take from R&B, Pop, Techno, and even Panamanian Plena, with traces from Rock & Roll, creating a unique blend experienced through performances in English and Spanish. “I want people to look up to me. I want to inspire people that are not feeling valued or respected. I like to make people feel noticed & important. As a performer, I want to deliver performances that leave you feeling super inspired and like ‘WOW’, that was amazing. I want to inspire others to stand up for themselves,” exclaimed Zofi. Joseph Salamida of Vanquish Studios recognized Zofi’s drive and passion for the music she writes and performs. He knows it is because he sees her love and desire to connect to her listeners. That desire has allowed the bi-lingual pop star to be releasing her first song “Like Dat” next month.

“Talent comes in abundance, but determination and drive are what set Zofi a part from the rest. Her willingness to dive deep and do the work is what makes her a standout. Pair that with her fearless stage presence, impacting performances, and inspiring music, she will leave you wanting more. Her music also speaks to a generation that has lost touch with the importance of relationships and respect, opening doors to a converation that has long needed to be had. Zofi is a new artist who's name and message will last for generations to come,” stated Valentin. Zofi’s talent development remains a continuous journey that attracts fans from all ages who attach to her very own "wow factor." Her music and stage presence are magnets to winners pursuing dreams, growth, and good vibes. Zofi is all about inspiring others in the belief that all is possible. The optimistic teen has proven that to herself as dreams do come true if you keep believing in yourself. Zofi is continuously reaching for the stars and is now becoming one.

n Friday, January 25th, Tequesta Trace Park will be turned into a snowy wonderland for the sixth annual Weston Winter Safety Expo. The weather prediction predicts for snow flurries, so make sure you're prepared. The Winter Safety Expo, hosted by the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff's Office, is a free, family-friendly evening with entertainment and educational opportunities for people of all ages. "You're never too old to feel the thrill of getting up close and personal with BSO Police and Fire's incredible resources and equipment," says Don Decker, Weston's Director of Parks
and Recreation. BSO will be displaying its remarkable array of fire engines, motorbikes, helicopters, and other emergency vehicles in full force. Officers and equipment from the SWAT team, Bomb Squad, Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife, Florida Highway Patrol, Marine Patrol, Tactical Rescue, and other law enforcement agencies are expected to attend. Weston CERT (Citizens Emergency Response Team) members will also be there. Informational booths and displays will be set up throughout the evening to tell the Weston community about all of the services available to keep them safe. There are also a number of attractions and activities at the Winter Safety Expo. A winter wonderland picture area will be available, as well as music, entertainment, dancing, children's activities and games, and much more.
“The highlight of the evening will be when the crowd is surprised by a Florida snowstorm,” Decker says. Bring your camera, because many of the Weston kids will be witnessing snow for the first time. Ice skating in the manner of South Florida is also available. There will be refreshments available.

The purpose of Conservatory Prep is to spark critical thinking, a passion for knowledge, and independent learning through a combined method of arts-integration and problem-based learning. The methodology was designed to meet the needs of twice-exceptional students. Many students are designated as gifted with minor learning differences and most had not performed to their potential in previous schools. These students learn directly opposite to the way traditional lesson plansare structured. Instead of learning facts and a sequence of information leading towards the greater concept, these students have strong conceptual skills and abstract reasoning and very poor concrete, sequential skills. They are most successful with a program starting with the concepts & working backwards to learn the facts & order. ..................................................................................

PLANTING THE SEEDS FOR A WONDERFUL HARVEST
A
By Beverly Perkins
lmost three decades ago, Renee Herman was determined to teach children at a young age to give back and give out to the community. So, the ambitious individual created “The Harvest Drive” at Country Isles Elementary. What started with just a few bags of groceries at the Weston school has grown into 13 distribution sites with almost 200 schools participating and teaching students to give back and share kindness. “Food is… fuel, joy, necessary, shared with family and friends, a source of strength and the centerpiece for many of our fondest memories. The Harvest Drive is a fabulous opportunity to make a difference in the lives of future philanthropists, namely the many children who have been at the helm of our year-round collections for 29 years,” explained Harvest Drive Founder, Renee Herman. During this year’s annual Harvest Drive, students, and staff from Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) recently helped families in need this past Thanksgiving. Schools across the district collected non-perishable food and other donations along with community businesses, corporations, civic organizations, Parent Teacher Associations (PTA), volunteer organizations, and individual
donors. Western High School was just one of the many schools which participated. “All the kids who come, they want to be here, they want to help,” explained Cayla Ankney, Western High School Student. “I got involved at first because my friends were doing it and then I realized what the bigger goal of it was and how essential it is for other people. They could be the person sitting next to you in class, and you wouldn't even know. So, I figured that's a good reason to help.” Western Wildcats and volunteers packed and organized thousands of donated items for families in need. These families then picked up their donations which also included the groceries for a Thanksgiving meal. This year they fed 360 families out of the Davie high school, but overall, about 2,200 families were fed through the abundance of donations. “We are so lucky to be part of the Broward County School Board that they let us come in and do this project to teach our kids why it is so important, especially after the two years that we've had,” added Herman. “We love what we do. We have the passion in the heart, and this is what we try to teach our kids.”

POSITIVE PARENTING
Encourage Children To Live Out Their Dream Responsibly
I
By Ivis Mateos
nnate creativity, curiosity and big dreams are a part of a child’s natural discovery process from the day they are born. Our duty as parents is to encourage children to begin to explore all that life has in store for them from day one. To encourage our children to live out their dreams responsibly, we must first have a good set of basic principles presented to them such as: • Give more than you take • Be kind to others • Time is more valuable than money The parent is the first source of inspiration and the ones responsible for introducing the basic ideas of principles to live by, such as those examples I listed and may be for your family culturally & morally appropriate. Dreams are waiting to be discovered, so start discussing as a family by using innovative thinking rather than laying out a structured idea. Think outside of the box! Although your children’s dreams might sound silly or unattainable, let the children express their ideas either way. Don’t be a dream killer, remember it’s THEIR dream not yours. Show enthusiasm and utilize the time with them to inspire and encourage them to see beyond their limitations. It is also a good to find a mentor or a tutor that will help clarify and enhance their exploration and research. Visit a local library and have them read books, watch documentaries and movies about people that have achieved their dreams and had goals or life experiences in common with those your child is curious about. I leave you with this observation from Nicolas Negroponte; “The wild, the absurd, the seemingly crazy: this kind of thinking is where new ideas come from ... The people capable of such playful thought carry forward their childish qualities and childhood dreams, applying them in areas where most of us get stuck, victims of our adult seriousness.” Have fun with your child and don’t overthink the process of dreaming a big dream, this is the essence of having a childlike joy forever.

CAN DO KID
An Unexpected Wish By Beverly Perkins

ake-A-Wish® Southern Florida has granted more than 13,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children who have critical illnesses. The non-profit organization aims to grant a wish for every medically eligible child in its territory. Typically, there are five types of wish requests: “I wish to be” (something), “I wish to meet” (someone), “I wish to go” (somewhere), “I wish to have” (something), and “I wish to give” (to a cause). However, one of the most recent wishes surprised ever yone. Cole Vaccarella, a 17-yearold cancer survivor from Davie, did not want anything; He wanted to do the giving. THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

tudents and volunteers gathered at Cypress Bay High School around 4:00 AM on Saturday, December 5. This gathering was not for a class or exam, however. These volunteers, from various organizations in & around the City of Weston were preparing for the Rotary Club of Weston’s 24th Annual Run for Tomorrow. “Everyone please gather with your designated station captains; the shuttles will be leaving to drop you & your equipment off soon!” said run committee chair, and active member of the Rotary Club of Weston, Frank Dreier. Volunteers sprung into action, excitedly getting into position along the route. The Run for Tomorrow included a 5k, 10k & half marathon run along with the running of the Commission Cup, a 1-mile family walk. There were also health-related festivities for people of all ages. More than 50 vendor booths featured health and wellness products/services, children’s activities, health check-ups, raffles with prizes, and even a dunk tank with Weston Commissioners Mead, Eddy, and Jaffe. Even Weston Mayor Peggy Brown got dunked for a good cause. The winner of this year’s prestigious City of Weston Commission Cup was Manatee Bay Elementary School. We are excited for next year already!” Over the last 20 years, the Rotary Run for Tomorrow has raised more than $1 million for charities serving the local area, including Honor Flight South Florida, LifeNet4Families, Harvest Drive, Jubilee Center, Kids in Distress, HANDY, HAAPE, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The event also supports other humanitarian global projects including The Rotary’s worldwide polio eradication programs through the Rotary Foundation.

ROYAL PALM REALTY
Weston’s Neighborhood Real Estate Brokerage By: Terry Jaillet
W
endy Newman-Scheppke has been raising her family and selling real estate in Weston since her kids were babies. Her daughter is now deciding which colleges she wants to apply to, and Wendy is managing a team of professionals at the brokerage she founded, Royal Palm Realty of South Florida. One thing Wendy learned along the way was to focus on her clients’ well-being above all else. In fact, it is what led her to start Royal Palm Realty. “When I worked at a large, national firm, I felt like I was sitting in a room full of competitors,” commented Wendy, “I didn’t want that. I wanted to be part of a team where everyone is supportive of each other and works toward a common goal. At Royal Palm Realty, we collaborate and support each other t o the benefit of our clients.”
Royal Palm Realty
The brokerage Scheppke founded offers all of the services and technology that larger firms offer. Clients’ homes are marketed on multiple websites, including Zillow and realtor.com, as well as, on all social media platforms. They have a full suite of service providers like title companies, attorneys, home inspectors, and contractors. What continuously sets Royal Palm Realty apart from other firms is their focus on putting their clients’ needs first.
“We want our clients to have an extraordinary experience, regardless of a property’s price point. Our clients become clients for life,” commented Scheppke, “We strive to help them in any way we can, even long after their transaction is complete.” Royal Palms Realty’s Lifestyle Concierge Service exemplifies this focus on their clients. The team provides homeowners with recommendations, referrals, and advice on an extensive range of topics. The fact that many of the team members live, work and are immersed in Weston makes them even more helpful. “I get calls months, even years after a transaction. People ask, ‘should I redo my kitchen’ or ‘can you refer a good electrician’ but also things not related to real estate at all like ‘do you know an emergency vet?” Wendy pointed out, “We are always there to help.’”
Real Estate Team
The team at Royal Palm Realty brings a broad array of backgrounds and skills that are difficult to duplicate. One trait that runs through them all is the desire to go above and beyond for their clients. This type of service has become even more critical during the pandemic. In fact, Senior Sales Associate Holly Lick toured homes while on a video call with out-of-
town clients. Holly, a native of Savannah, Georgia, had her southern charm shine through as she went from house to house. In the end, the clients found their new home before they even arrived. Mariana Fontanarrosa continuously works with clients who are out of the country to purchase, sell, and rent their properties. The associates at Royal Palm Realty are their clients’ boots on the ground in a time when moves need to happen and travel is difficult. The Royal Palm Realty team also has certified Military Relocation Professionals (MRP) and associates fluent in multiple languages, including Spanish and Portuguese. They can bring local buyers, out of state buyers, and international buyers to any Weston property.
Sellers Market
With interest rates at record lows, Florida’s attractive tax status, and almost 1,000 people moving to Florida a day, there may be no better time to sell a home than now. If you are thinking about selling, you should reach out to a team with years of experience, an unparalleled connection to the Weston community, superior customer service, and seasoned negotiators to work on your behalf. There is no one better to sell your home than your own Weston neighbors! Newman-Scheppke ▸ Wendy Principal Broker, (954) 326-5335

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) USE IN THE FOOT & ANKLE
GET BACK TO DOING THE THINGS YOU ENJOY! By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
H
ealing after an injury involves a well-orchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. They are formed in the bone marrow and are freely passing through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for use in orthopedic procedures. New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy for use in orthopedic procedures.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells.
What conditions can it treat?
• Arthritis (Foot or Ankle) • Ligament Injuries (Acute or Chronic) • Heel Spurs • Tendon Injuries (Acute or Chronic) • Joint Pain • Shin Splints • Plantar Fasciitis • Chronic Inflammatory Conditions • Achilles Tendonitis • Chronic Nerve Irritation (Neuritis)
How does the PRP process work?
Our doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes.
What happens after that?
The injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). The blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the aid of ultrasound or x-ray.
Am I a candidate for treatment with PRP?
Speak with our doctors and ask if PRP is right for you. Dr. Messina will perform an examination to make a determination if the use of PRP will benefit you. If you are on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place.
What are the risks associated with this treatment?
PRP uses your body's own natural properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon.

JANUARY IS GLAUCOMA AWARENESS MONTH
W
hat is glaucoma? Glaucoma is called "the sneak thief of sight" since there are no symptoms and once vision is lost, it's permanent. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve, resulting in loss of vision. The optic nerve tissue at risk is responsible for transmitting visual signals from the eye to the brain. When the pressure inside an eye is too high for a patient's optic nerve, glaucoma will develop. That pressure measurement varies from patient to patient. There are many types of glaucoma and theories regarding their causes. The exact cause of glaucoma is not known and it cannot currently be cured, but it can be treated in multiple ways. The most common form of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, is associated with an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eye. This higher pressure causes progressive damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision. The advanced form of this glaucoma may even cause blindness. Not everyone with high pressure will develop glaucoma, and many people with normal eye pressure can develop glaucoma. Who is at risk? Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the U.S. Most forms of glaucoma develop slowly and usually without any symptoms. Many people do not know they have glaucoma until significant vision loss has occurred. Glaucoma initially affects peripheral, or side vision, but can advance to a patient's central vision. If glaucoma is detected at an early stage and treated promptly, it may be controlled with little or no further vision loss. This is why annual comprehensive eye examinations by a doctor of optometry are so important to detect people at risk of glaucoma. Those at higher risk include people of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent. Other high-risk groups include: people over 60, family members of those already diagnosed, diabetics, and people who are severely nearsighted. Regular eye exams are especially important for those at higher risk for glaucoma and may help to prevent unnecessary vision loss. Types of glaucoma Of the different types of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma often develops gradually and painlessly, without warning signs or

symptoms. It can cause damage and leads to blindness more quickly in black populations, making regular eye examinations, including tests for glaucoma, particularly important for blacks over 35 years of age. Another type of glaucoma, acute angle-closure glaucoma, may be accompanied by blurred vision and loss of side vision. When optic nerve damage has occurred despite a normal IOP, this is called normal-tension glaucoma. Secondary glaucoma refers to any case in which another disease causes or contributes to increased eye pressure, resulting in optic nerve damage and vision loss.

Regular Eye Exams are Important The best way to protect your sight from glaucoma is to get a comprehensive eye examination. Then, if you have glaucoma, treatment can begin immediately.

TEE TO GREEN
Getting the Most From the Range
I
t does not matter if you are a pro golfer or a high handicap player, one of the biggest challenges golfers face is taking their so-called practice game to the golf course and performing as well on the course. Many players can hit the ball great on the range and putt well on the practice green, but when they step on the course, they become a different person. These players cannot play with confidence nor can they play to the level they are capable of playing given their present physical skills. What is mysteriously changing the moment you walk off the range or practice green and step onto the course? Nothing – it is your mindset that changes, not physical skills or ability. You still have to hit the ball
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
to a target and putt the ball in the cup. Why is it that you walk off the practice tee, step up onto the first tee, and not stripe it on the course as you did on the range a few minutes ago? Usually it is your perception of the importance of the round. As you tee it up on the first hole, hitting your ball to a target is no longer as simple a task as it was on the range (at least that is what you think). Now that you are on the course, you think “it counts”! You only have one ball and one chance at hitting the ball to the target. Then the pressure mounts (but only because you put the pressure on yourself to perform) and you focus more on the result and trying not to screw up. If this scenario sounds too familiar, you first need to understand how you are blocking your talents from shining on the golf course. Does your mindset change when you get on the course to a mindset of avoidance golf or defensive golf? That’s right, defensive golf! Players can get into mental quicksand on the golf course in ways they are not aware of including the
70 / Our City Weston / January 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
mindset to avoid errors. Therefore, the first step to improving your performance is to understand how you block your ability on the course. The first sign that gets in the way is you try too hard to play well. Most highly motivated players, sometimes perfectionists, have trouble playing well on the course because they try too hard to play well. You cannot play your best golf when you try to too hard to hit a perfect shot, make every putt, or hit every drive long and straight. You might be thinking to yourself “Aren’t I supposed to try hard?” Trying hard does not help you play better golf. The harder you try in golf, the more you tense up and control your swing.

ANIMAL HEALTH
Heartworm Disease and Your Dog
H
eartworm disease is a serious and sometimes fatal disease for dogs. It is caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitis that is transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected by biting dogs that are already infected with heartworms. Any dog living or visiting an area that has mosquitoes and infected dogs is at risk of getting heartworm disease. THE HEARTWORM LIFE CYCLE IN DOGS ▸ A mosquito ingests tiny, immature worms, called microfilariae, in a blood meal from a heartworm-infected host animal. ▸ The microfilariae develop inside the mosquito, becoming infective larvae within 2 to 3 weeks. ▸ The mosquito transmits the infective larvae when it bites a new host. ▸ The larvae develop inside the dog’s body tissues, then enter the bloodstream and move toward the heart and blood vessels. The larvae grow into adult worms inside the heart, where they will live until they die (about 5 to 7 years). Adult heartworms can grow to over a foot in length. ▸ After 5 to 6 months inside the heart, female worms release microfilariae into the blood, and the cycle starts again. SIGNS OF DISEASE Dogs infected with heartworms may not show any signs of disease for 1 or 2 years. By then, the disease may have already damaged the dog’s heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. The most common signs of heartworm infection are a dry, chronic cough; general weakness; shortness of breath; and lack of stamina. These signs occur because the heartworms clog the heart and blood vessels, making the heart less efficient and reducing the blood supply. All of the signs associated with heartworm disease will be more noticeable after extensive exercise. In advanced cases, the dog may have congestive heart failure, swelling in the abdomen or legs, weight loss, and/or anemia. DIAGNOSING THE DISEASE 72 / Our City Weston / January 2022
By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
The most common way to detect heartworm disease is from a blood test, which detects antigens produced by the adult female heartworms. Your veterinarian may also look at the blood sample under a microscope to see if any microfilariae are present. If the results of these tests are positive for heartworm, additional blood work, X-rays, and echocardiograms may be in order to further determine how extensive the infection is, the number of worms present in your dog’s body, and the amount of damage they have done to her vital organs. These tests can also help determine whether or not your dog will be able to tolerate the heartworm treatment. TREATING HEARTWORM The vast majority of heartworm patients are treated successfully. Treatment consists of both eliminating the parasites and managing the heart, vascular, and systemic problems caused by the infection. If the infection is not too severe, your
veterinarian will likely give your dog a special medication to kill the adult heartworms. Your dog will then need a month’s rest to rid herself of the decomposing worms. Following this, you will need to give your dog some medicine to kill the microfilariae. Your pet should then be put on a prevention program to avoid becoming re-infected. PREVENTING HEARTWORM The easiest way to manage heartworm disease is to prevent it. This can be done with oral and topical medications. Discuss the available preventatives with your veterinarian to find out which medication is best for your dog. Many veterinarians now recommend year-round heartworm prevention. ⊲ Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Fall Prevention
T
he Men and Women of the Broward Sheriffs Office wish you and your families and Happy and Healthy new year. Now that the holiday season is over and we shared joyous moments with our families and friends, it's time to look inside our homes to help ensure we have a safe new year. Falls are a public health problem affecting people of all ages. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 684,000 fatalities are caused by falls each year. In the United States, the CDC reports unintentional falls as the leading cause of death among older Americans. It's no surprise that falls make up the most significant percentage of calls for emergency medical services in the City of Weston and accounts for ten percent of Westons' total call volume. Fortunately, there are many things people of all ages can do to help prevent fall incidents and injuries from occurring. Understanding your level of risk is the first step in helping to prevent falls. While falls occur in all age categories, children ages 0-17 and older adults have the highest risk. Most childhood falls occur due to developing stages of life, increased curiosity, independence, and inadequate supervision. Parents and caregivers need to take extra precautions to prevent falls from occurring. Children should always be buckled in cars, high chairs, strollers, and shopping carts to help prevent unwanted injuries. Children also need a soft place to land. Playgrounds with soft surfaces are very popular and greatly reduce injury risks. Also, make sure your child wears a helmet during wheeled sports activities such as bicycling, skateboarding, skating, or riding a scooter. Taking extra precautions around stairs and ensuring your child knows how to tie their shoes will help prevent them from tripping. Porches, decks, or balconies are not safe places to play. Never leave your child unattended. Older adults, ages 65+ have the most significant risk of death or severe injury resulting from a fall, and the risk of falling increases as we age. These falls have physical, financial, and mental health effects on the victim. The Centers for Disease Control has developed STEADI – Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries – a fall prevention program designed to help older adults identify their risk for falling. STEADI provides information and resources for patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers. To learn more about the STEADI Program, please visit https://www.cdc.gov/steadi/index. html. STEADI also offers a brochure checklist to guide you through a home safety survey. You can find the brochure online at https:// www.cdc.gov/steadi/pdf/check_for_sfaety_brochure.pdf. Take the time to do a home safety survey to identify trip hazards in your home. Also, consider using anti-slip rugs, non-slip mats, or decals in the bathtub or shower, and keep hallways and exits free of clutter. Use night lights to illuminate pathways and hands rails in stairways. Lastly, your health can also play a role in falling causes. Speak to your healthcare providers about any medication, physical, or vision changes. Prevention is the key to help ensure that falls do not occur. Broward Sheriffs Office Department of Fire Rescue is committed to providing ongoing education about fall prevention to help reduce fall injuries in the City of Weston. To receive a home safety checklist or STEADI resources, please call 954-991-3501 or email Melanie_Brocato@sheriff.org. Together we can help reduce the incidents of falls in our Community.

Santa Clause is Coming to Town! 2nd Annual Weston Santa Parade is a Hit
L
ast December, at the height of COVID lockdowns, Weston resident Mark Buscemi gathered a group of his closest friends and pitched an idea: since everyone needed to maintain social distancing and most holiday-related events had been canceled, why not bring Santa to town with an impromptu 2-vehicle Santa parade. The team jumped into action and the first Weston Santa Parade was born. Flash forward a year, and a new Weston tradition has been born. Mark, was again, the big guy with the red coat riding in “sley” a Saab convertible, which was followed by the “reindeer mobile,” a truck with “elves” throwing out candy canes and treats for all who wanted them.
The parade kicked off in Executive 1, flowed through several neighborhoods before ending at Weston Town Center. Kids of all ages were touched and excited as Santa drove past. It is pretty clear that this won’t be the last time we see Santa driving through the streets of Weston. Yet another reason Weston is a
