“We swore we weren’t ready for senior living. Then we saw The Palace.”

Jack & Evelyn Miller

“We were stunned. We stayed in the Four Seasons in Paris once, and The Palace in Weston looked better. Ten minutes after we walked in the door, we realized we had never seen senior living like this. Everything you can think of is at your fingertips. Chef-prepared meals in the dining room. A social director who makes cruise ships look dull. A staff trained to deliver such a high level of care and comfort they’ve been named #1 in America. Everywhere you look, it’s 5-star all the way. But you need good friends to share it with. Our crowd at The Palace are some of the best new friends we’ve ever met, and every single one of us will tell you: ‘We wish we had found The Palace sooner.’ ”

The Palace at Weston is taking reservations. Now is the time to visit our spectacular Weston Leasing Center at 15951 SW 41st St., Suite 500, Davie, FL 33331.

The Best Valentine’s Day Gift

F

ebruary is typically the month we shower those we love with gifts of chocolates and flowers, and maybe a piece of jewelry. This Valentine’s Day, why not give your loved one a gift that truly shows how much you care about them – the gift of life. February is American Heart Month and it’s the perfect time to help your family adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle and learn lifesaving CPR. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), someone in this country suffers a heart attack every 34 seconds. This is when blood flow to the heart is blocked. During a heart attack, seconds count. It is critical to keep the blood flowing until paramedics arrive. That’s why the AHA is encouraging everyone, even children, to learn hands-only CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). Throughout the month of February, local municipalities, fire departments, and other agencies and health care providers will be offering hands-only CPR classes. It consists of two simple steps – call 9-1-1 and then push hard and fast until help arrives. Immediate CPR can double or triple a person’s chances of survival after cardiac arrest. Take the time to learn this lifesaving technique, because the life you save will likely be that of someone you know. This is also the month to adopt a heart healthy lifestyle, if you haven’t already. That means eating nutrient-rich foods, exercising more (with at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week), and living a tobacco-free life. So, this Valentine’s Day, show your loved ones how much you really care – take the time to learn or refresh your CPR skills and commit to living a heart-healthy life. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Weston Maintains Elite Credit Rating Status BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he City of Weston has achieved something many homeowners aspire for – an excellent credit score. Moody’s Investors Service reaffirmed its Aaa rating, the strongest creditworthiness relative to other U.S. municipal or tax-exempt entities. Much like consumer credit ratings, the better the credit score, the more accessible the credit and more favorable the interest rate for municipalities. With Weston’s stellar credit score, the City will receive the most favorite interest rates offered. Mayor Daniel Stermer says this is good news for Weston residents because it equates to a substantial benefit for taxpayers should the City need to borrow money for capital projects or improvements. “The re-affirmation of the City of Weston rating is a positive endorsement of the financial management practices of the City’s leaders. Additionally, when the City is ready to issue debt, it will receive the most favorable rates, terms and conditions afforded to U.S. municipal governments.” Moody’s rated 16,255 municipal bond issuers as of 2017 and of those only 1,163 received a rating of Aaa. This puts Weston in the top 93 percent in the country. Obligators rated Aaa are judged to be of the highest quality and subject to the lowest credit default risk. The ratings process is a lengthy six-step process that involves both quantitative analysis and qualitative factors. An obligator scorecard is developed using several factors with certain weightings assigned: Economy and Tax Base (30%), Finances (30%), Management and Governance (20%) and Debt and

Pensions (20%). According to the Moody’s report, Weston’s credit position is excellent and its Aaa rating is much stronger than the median rating of Aa3 for cities nationwide. Weston’s notable credit factors include a very healthy financial position, extremely small debt and pension liabilities, a substantial tax base, and a strong wealth and income profile. Here are some of the highlights from the study: ▸  Economy and Tax Base – Weston has an exceptionally strong economy and tax base. The full value per capita is above the U.S. median and saw impressive growth in recent years. Weston’s total full value ($11.8 billion) is much stronger than other Moody’s rated cities and its median family income is well above the U.S. level. ▸  Finances – Weston has a robust financial position. Its fund balance as a percent of operating revenues is far superior to the U.S. median and grew materially over recent years. Additionally, Weston’s cash balance as a percent of operating revenues (146%) is substantially above other Moody’s rated cities. ▸  Debt and Pensions – Weston’s debt and pension burdens are exceptionally light and favorably below the U.S. median. Moody’s reviews its ratings on an annual basis. The City of Weston’s Aaa rating was last affirmed in 2016 and 2010, after initially being attained in 2006. Weston also holds a AAA credit rating from Standard and Poor’s.

Community CPR Day Teaches Lifesaving Lessons BY STACEY BOMSER

F

Photos courtesy City of Weston

or this Valentine’s Day, you and your loved ones can share the ultimate gift – the gift of life. Residents, ages eight and up, can learn how to save a life during the third annual Weston Community CPR Day. It takes place on Saturday, February 22nd at the Weston Community Center. “The month of February reminds us to make sure we take the time to show how much we care about and love each other,” states BSO Weston District Fire Chief Todd Draizin. “This year’s theme ‘Healthy Hearts – The Beat Goes On’ reminds us to make healthy choices and to learn CPR. In less than one hour we can teach you and your family how to save a loved one’s life with Hands Only CPR as well as Bleeding Control techniques.” Community CPR Day is presented by the City of Weston, Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, and Cleveland Clinic Florida. Throughout the program, firefighter/ paramedics and healthcare workers will teach attendees how to perform Hands Only CPR, how to operate an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and how to control life-threatening bleeding. Chief Draizin encourages everyone to take advan-

tage of this free program, because the life you save will likely be someone you know. “The quicker these life-saving techniques are applied the better chance for the patient to have minimal complications and have a positive patient outcome, also known as quality of life. Since family members and bystanders are often the first to witness emergencies they can offer the victims the greatest chance of survival by starting CPR, using an AED or initiating bleeding control techniques before EMS responders arrive.” Time is of the essence, especially when it comes to cardiac arrest. According to Chief Draizin, there is a short window of time to prevent permanent injury, including death, by restoring blood flow artificially until the body can resume normal function.

“According to the American Heart Association (AHA), when CPR is initiated within the first few minutes of a victim’s collapse, combined with pre-hospital EMS care, the victim’s chance of survival increases by as much as fifty percent.” The good news is that almost anyone can perform Hands Only CPR. Chief Draizin says children as young as eight have saved lives using this simple technique. “According to the AHA, Hands Only CPR has just two easy steps. First, call 9-1-1 if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse. Then, push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of a familiar song that has 100 to 200 beats per minute. Song examples include Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees or Baby Shark by PinkFong. Keep it up until paramedics arrive.” No reservation is required to participate in Community CPR Day; simply stop by the Weston Community Center on February 22nd anytime between 10am and 2pm. BSO Weston offers a Hands Only CPR class with bleeding control at the Community Center each month. It also offers free traditional “Heart Saver” CPR classes to Weston residents and businesses. To register for these classes, contact Mary Ann Caporrino at 954-389-2015.

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS BY STACEY BOMSER

or many seniors, performing the most simple tasks can become a challenge and while they may need help with day to day activities, they may not want to live with their children or in an assisted living facility. For those individuals, Seniors Helping Seniors® is here to help. For the past six years, Seniors Helping Seniors has been pairing seniors in need with active seniors who can empathize and understand their needs. Seniors Helping Seniors Franchise Owner Diana Marrero Cabassi explains more about this unique service and how it may Diana Marrero Cabassi benefit you or your aging loved ones. What is Seniors Helping Seniors? We are a licensed agency that provides companionship care to seniors who need a little bit of help to stay home independently. What differentiates your business from other caregiver agencies? The quality of our caregivers and the fact that we are the only agency that, for the most part, employs active seniors as caregivers. This peer-to-peer approach is based on the idea that the best person to care for a senior is someone who can understand and relate to their needs. What do you look for when pairing caregivers with seniors needing help? We match people based on common interests. We employ people that are genuinely interested in helping others, who are caring and compassionate, and can relate to the people they are caring for. We like to say that it’s “Like getting a little help from your friends®”. Who is your typical client? Seniors who need help around the house and/or companionship.

Provides Companionship and Care People are living longer but not necessarily healthier lives. Additionally, loneliness affects many seniors and our service provides friendship to those who may be feeling a bit isolated or depressed. Who are your typical caregivers? Although our caregivers are unique in their own way, they are all loving, caring and compassionate individuals who understand the needs of the seniors they are assisting. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the people they are caring for. We look for people who have a volunteer heart that don’t mind getting paid for their services. What do you do to ensure the safety and security of your clients? I personally interview all potential caregivers and check their references. In addition, everyone is required to undergo a Level 2 FBI background screening, which is done at the national level. What services does Seniors Helping Seniors provide? Six Schools Share Mayor’s Challenge Winnings BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge 1-Mile Family Health Walk attracted more than 2,000 students and families. It was part of the Rotary Club of Weston’s Run For Tomorrow events. The City of Weston started the Mayor’s Challenge Cup program nine years ago to encourage parents and schools to join together in teaching children the importance of fitness and healthy living. Each year, Weston elementary schools compete to see which school will have the largest number of participants in the 1-Mile Family Health Walk, as a percentage of its total enrollment, and take home the coveted Commission Cup trophy. “The Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge promotes healthy competition among our elementary schools,”

explains Mayor Daniel Stermer. “As Mayor, I’m always thrilled to see so many families come out to represent their schools – literally thousands of children, parents, siblings, and yes…even their pets. It’s truly a community event that accomplishes our mission to promote a healthier community.” This year, thanks to financial support from the Rotary Club of Weston and event sponsors, every school that had at least ten percent of its student population participate received a $1,000 cash prize. Congratulations to Country Isles Elementary, Eagle

Point Elementary, Imagine Charter School, Indian Trace Elementary, Manatee Bay Elementary and the Sagemont Lower School. With 24.4% of its students participating in the 1-Mile Family Health Walk, the Sagemont Lower School was awarded the Commission Cup trophy. In addition to congratulating the winning schools on their accomplishment, Mayor Stermer also commends the Rotary Club of Weston and community volunteers for presenting this wonderful community event. “Thank you to the Rotary Club of Weston, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, BSO and our City staff that make the Rotary Run events such a popular annual tradition in Weston.”

have worked 30 years in healthcare with executive business positions with several major traditional medicine companies and I have to admit that my experience has not been impressive relative to patient satisfaction or outcomes. I have always heard terms such as integrative, preventive, functional, nutritional and regenerative medicine, but didn’t appreciate the extent of what it meant until I decided to downsize my career and join Bellissimo Medical in Weston, Florida in November 2018. Although traditional medicine is effective in certain areas such as surgery, rehabilitation, ER, imaging, pathology, etc., I have learned very quickly that it lags severely behind integrative functional medicine in many aspects. Interestingly, they are both practiced by licensed medical professionals. Both are evidence-based, employ advanced diagnostic tests and may use prescription medications, however; the fundamental difference is that traditional medicine focuses on treating (turningoff) symptoms as opposed to integrative functional medicine that seeks to treat the whole person (body, mind, spirit, and environment) to cure ailments. This type of innovative medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a system-oriented approach in order to identify and fix imbalances in the body. I am astonished by the stories of happy patients. Here is a partial generalized list of the differences I noticed, all-determining important factors for positive outcomes and patient satisfaction. FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE TRADITIONAL MEDICINE History Form Lifestyle/ environment Disease, family history nutrition/ sleep, quality of life Labs Narrow optimal ranges, Normal/conventional ranges predictive labs disease detection (sick patient) Visits 45 to 60 minutes 7 to 10 minutes Cost Less expensive (cure disease) More expensive (manage symptoms) Medications Natural (fewer side effects) Chemical-synthetic (more side effects) Treatment Underlying issue, disease cure Symptoms, disease management Service/attention Personalized/ no waiting Standardized/ as available Fortunately, medicine is gradually changing. Unhappy patients with traditional medicine outcomes are desperately looking for effective value-based alternatives. I’m glad I found meaning in my new role, but I wish I would have appreciated these differences earlier in my career. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Alex A. Rotary Run For Tomorrow Provides Help Today

T

he 22nd annual Rotary Run For Tomorrow was a runaway success, raising significant funds for local charities and Rotary beneficiaries. The event, which is the Rotary Club of Weston’s primary charity fundraiser, features a 5K, Half Marathon and 1-mile Family Health Walk. “It was a beautiful day in all ways. The weather was perfect, and the runners had an exceptional experience,” states Run Chair Jesus “Jay” Sanchez. “For 22 years our club has hosted this signature charity event, and we couldn’t be prouder of our city, our partners and our sponsors for making the 2019 Joe DiMaggio Children’s

Hospital Rotary Run for Tomorrow a day to remember.” Run Sponsors Chair Gene Harvey says a special thank you needs to go out to the more than 70 event sponsors for their support and loyalty. “Special thanks to our Title and Mayor’s Challenge Sponsor, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, who was delighted to participate again this year and has already agreed to be our title sponsor again next year.” This year’s Rotary Run raised more than $106,000 for local charities and service projects including Harvest Drive, the Jubilee Center, Hope Outreach Center, LifeNet 4 Families, HANDY, Habitat for Humanity of Broward, and more. Proceeds also support Bahamian disaster relief and the Rotary Foundation’s

efforts to eliminate polio and fund grants around the world. Three hundred sixty-three runners participated in the Half Marathon, with 23-year-old Jonathan Werble crossing the finish line first with a time of 1:16:00. The 5K drew 493 runners. The overall winner was 34-yearold Raidel Guerrero who ran it in 18:04. More than 2,000 students participated in this year’s Mayor’s Challenge 1-Mile Family Health Walk. The races were followed by the Fitness and Health Festival. It featured over 60 exhibitors showcasing health and wellness products and services, safety, sports, gyms, personal services,

and more. Highlights included the Fun Zone games and activities as well as the dunk tank, with Mayor Stermer and other local leaders taking the plunge for a good cause. The Rotary Run for Tomorrow is presented jointly by the City of Weston and Rotary Club of Weston.

Boy Scouts Conduct First Flag Retirement Ceremony BY STACEY BOMSER

B

Photos courtesy City of Weston

oy Scout Troop 183 conducted the first U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony in Weston, respectfully retiring close to 75 flags that had been deposited in the City’s collection box at the Weston Community Center. Troop 183 Scoutmaster Craig Davis says this was a learning experience for the Boy Scouts, who range in age from eleven to 17. “They learned respect for the country, the symbol it (the flag) represents, and what it means to those who defend it.” According to law, U.S. flags that

are tattered, torn or otherwise in poor condition should be destroyed in a dignified and respectful manner, ideally by burning. That is exactly what the Scouts did on Veterans Day, during a Flag Retirement Ceremony attended by other Boy Scouts, veterans, members of the community, as well as Weston City leaders. “U.S. Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8K states: The flag, when it is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” explains Davis. As part of the retirement ceremony, each flag was folded and saluted before being burned. Flying the American Flag is a symbol of patriotic pride, but once the flag is worn, torn, soiled, or

otherwise no longer fit to respectfully serve as a symbol of our country it should be properly destroyed. To ensure this happens, the Veterans of Weston worked with the City to provide a flag disposal box outside the front entrance of the Weston Community Center. Residents should respectfully fold the worn or damaged flag into triangles before placing it in the drop-off box. Any size cloth U.S. flag is accepted. The Flag Retirement Ceremony is one of many community service projects conducted by Troop 183. Davis says, “The troop helps with the Dania Beach Pier Clean-up, sorts food and collects food donations for Feeding South Florida, and our Scouts complete many Eagle Scout projects that benefit various nonprofit organizations.” n Troop 183 is accepting new members. Interested families can contact Scoutmaster. Troop183@troopmaster.email.

egend has it that Valentine’s Day was named after St. Valentine, a Roman priest and physician who would perform marriages against the wishes of the Emperor and was ultimately imprisoned for doing so. During his incarceration, St. Valentine cured one of the guard’s daughter of blindness and received the favor of being allowed to send letters to his family which he signed “Your Valentine”. Today, Valentine’s Day has morphed the history slightly but still retains the two-fold message we have come to know the season to bring: a time to remind those we love how we feel and an opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of a physician’s perspective on heart health. A healthy diet and lifestyle are your best defense to fight heart disease. It’s also important to know your risk factors: family history, lack of physical activity, smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, poor diet, and diabetes. Here are some simple steps you can take to become more heart-healthy: ▸  Follow a heart-healthy diet. You may be eating proper portions of food but not the right type. Eat a variety of nutritious food from all food groups. Avoid fatty, overlyprocessed foods, as well as foods high in sodium and sugar. Aim for several servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day. Don’t forget to include some whole grains, poultry and fish. Find great tips at www.heart.org. ▸  Know your numbers. Start by knowing how many calories you burn each day. Adjust your food intake or exercise to maintain your goal weight. A free online resource can be found at https://www.webmd.com/ diet/healthtool-food-calorie-counter. ▸  Increase physical activity. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days or more each week. This can be broken into shorter periods throughout the day. Incorporate exercise into your routine in simple ways such as taking a brisk walk or using the stairs instead of the elevator. Check out the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans at www.health.gov . ▸  If you smoke or vape, quit. You can call 1-800-quitnow or you can find resources to help you at www.smokefree.gov . ▸  Work with your doctor to evaluate and manage your risks for heart disease. In addition to checking your blood pressure, cholesterol numbers, blood sugar level, and body mass index (BMI), your doctor can give you diet and lifestyle recommendations and offer further resources to help you succeed. ▸  Prescription Medication – Medications that are prescribed to you to help maintain blood pressure or cholesterol levels should be taken daily and on a regular schedule. With Valentine’s Day upon us, use this holiday as a reminder to be heart smart. Every healthy choice makes a difference. For more information, please contact District Chief Todd Draizin at Weston Fire Station #81 at 954-389-2015 or by email at Todd_Draizin@Sheriff.org.

Cirque de la Symphonie Leaves Audience Spellbound

C

irque de la Symphonie was a treat for the senses. This unique production featured incredible acrobatic feats choreographed to holiday-themed music performed by the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra under the baton of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese. The unique concert experience was presented by the City of Weston in collaboration with the Weston Music Society. “One of the goals of the Weston Music Society is to bring the best of all genres of music to Weston, and this concert certainly exceeded that goal,” stated Lou Marett, president of the Weston Music Society. According to Marett, the audience gasped, laughed and cheered as the Cirque-style jugglers, aerial acrobats and gymnasts performed their amazing acts perfectly timed to the music. Patrons were

equally impressed by the orchestra’s performance. The program included a selection of music from movies and ballets to beloved holiday songs. Audience members clapped and sang along to A Christmas Festival and Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson, the concert suite from “Polar Express”, Dead Man’s Chest from “Pirates of the Caribbean”, Hatikvah, Anitra’s Dance by Edvard Grieg, and Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers from “The Nutcracker”, among other tunes. Following the concert, patrons were invited to attend a dessert reception where they could meet and mingle with the musicians and Cirque performers. Attendees had nothing but praise for the performance, including comments such as “Best concert ever,” “What a great evening,” and “Thank for bringing this to Weston.” Many of those in attendance were children, which delights Weston Music Society officers as the organization is committed to fostering music appreciation in Weston students. “Cirque de la Symphonie was a great follow-up to our elementary school education program in which we introduce the instruments of the orchestra to the students,” explains Vice President of Education Christy Blackford. “Now they hear all the instru-

This annual event is presented by the Weston Music Society, City of Weston, and Weston Town Center, in partnership with the Arts Council of Greater Weston. The popular program features the Symphony of the Americas, under the baton of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, playing a selection of familiar classics, Broadway melodies, and tributes to popular performers. It takes place on Sunday, March 8th, from 6:30-8pm near the Bell Tower. Seating is limited; please bring your own lawn chairs. To learn more about the Weston Music Society visit www. POSITIVE PARENTING

Core values – A Must For All Ages BY IVIS MATEOS ore values are the fundamental beliefs that shape a person’s character or behavior as they define what the person is willing to adopt as wrong or right. Core values are applied into our personal life, work environment, social groups, community and many other areas. As we go through different stages of maturity, our values tend to change. What might have been a core value system for you as a child might no longer apply in adulthood. For example, as a child your priorities and value systems might have included Friends Above All, Honesty, and Fun. Once you begin to mature, your values might change to Family, Faith and Integrity. Change is a sign of growth and development in each and every one of us and our children. Teaching strong values to our children is instrumental to their growth and character development. As parents we can introduce our children to some of the core values that best define our family beliefs. For example, in my family, my husband and I believe it is important that our children include Faith first as a core value. A belief in God, the source of life and light in our lives, is a foundation to who we are. We also taught our children the importance of Family. With faith and the love and support of our little family, we covered the values that matter most to us. Then we have values that apply to each one as individuals depending on our own character, such as humbleness, independence, passion, integrity, self-respect and caring for others. It is important to create a system of evaluation and renovation of values in order to continue to stay true to ourselves and our personal and emotional growth and maturity. Creating a journaling system is a great way to keep accountable as well as to evaluate values individually and as a family. Journaling will assist in the process of discovering whether our core values can be modified, replaced or simply remain as is to continue to define our fundamental beliefs and good character.

City Launches Census 2020 Education Campaign BY STACEY BOMSER

C

ensus 2020 is just around the corner and the City of Weston wants to make sure every resident is ready. In an effort to explain the purpose of the Census and what’s involved as well as to address common concerns, city and community leaders have recorded a series of public service announcements. Everyone from the mayor, police chief and fire chief to a local physician, clergy member, business owner and several active community volunteers are appearing in these videos. Mayor Daniel Stermer delivered the first PSA message explaining that it is important every Weston resident be counted, regardless of age, because Census data directly affects our community in many ways. “Businesses depend upon Census data to make decisions about where to locate, hire and invest,” he pointed out. Another way Weston benefits from Census results is with school funding. Former City Commissioner Angel Gomez, who is now Governmental Coordinator for the Broward County School Board, explained that, “An accurate census is key to our schools getting the funding they need to serve every child who walks through our doors.” He pointed out that, among other things, Census data determines the distribution of $11.3 billion in special education grants to the states, over $13 billion for the National School Lunch Program, and helps fund grants to improve teacher quality. In addition to education, Census data is used to distribute more than $700 billion dollars each year in federal and state funding for vital programs such as healthcare and emergency assistance. Both BSO Fire Rescue and Emergency

Services District Chief Todd Draizin and BSO Chief of Police Kevin Butler encouraged participation to ensure Weston receives proper funding for public safety services. Captain Butler assured residents that completing the Census is perfectly safe: “The Census is confidential. NO law enforcement agency or any government agency or court can gain access to your information. It cannot be used against you in any way. Census staff take a lifetime oath, to protect your information and violations are a $250,000 fine and/or up to five years in prison.” Similar messages assuring the confidentiality of all Census responses were reinforced by Fabio Andrade, founder of Americas Community Center for the immigrant community, and Jesus Sanchez, member of the Rotary Club of Weston, who recorded his message in both English and Spanish. Loren Oliveira and Beatriz Malnic, founders of the Brazilian Voices, used their beautiful voices to encourage participation, including performing a little song as part of their PSA. The PSA campaign also includes videos from everyday people who simply care about our community. Longtime resident and cultural advocate Joy Rodenberg confessed that “as an active senior, technology is not really my thing”, but says there is no need to fear this year’s online census. There are options to complete the census by phone or mail if you prefer. And local medical student Mohamed Saba reminded residents that your kids count too. However, children away at college should complete the Census at their campus housing. For more information on Census 2020 in Weston, including links to watch the PSA videos, go to www.westonfl.org/residents/census-2020. Remember, #WeCount in Weston.

ASK THE EXPERT

Arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized, and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone

F

and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of this treatment include faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; it is an outpatient procedure; and a quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically, a full return to activity may be possible. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hen considering sending your child to a private school, it is vital to take into account various factors, especially if you have to pay a pretty penny to attend. In this day and age, it is evident that academics are getting more rigorous, standardized tests are increasingly difficult, and the pressure of college is no joke. Colleges today want a well-rounded, educated, unique students, so it is key to find a private school that will enable your child to embody these qualities. Find a school with good extracurriculars The first factor to consider should be the size of the school. It will be harder for your child to stand out in a very large class. Most colleges compare students against their class, not other schools, so this factor is very important. It will be easier for your child to stand out in a small pond than in a large sea of students. Additionally, you should ensure that there are ample extracurriculars at your selected private school that appeal to your child. Having good extracurriculars and sports teams should be a deciding factor when selecting a private school. Colleges often look to recruit athletes from wellknown private schools. A wide variety of extracurriculars gives your child the option to be involved in an organization that actually interest them. Colleges want ambitious students, so leadership positions in clubs and organizations are crucial to your child’s success. Prioritizes academics and education Another factor to consider would be the passing rates of Advanced Placement (AP) and Cambridge’s Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) exams. High passing rates indicate that the educators at the school

Passing an exam often allows the student to receive college credit, so

they won’t have to retake that course in college. Not only do high passing rates increase the likelihood of your child receiving college credit, but it implies that your child is more likely to do better in the course throughout the year as well. Academics that are challenging, high passing rates on ap exams Apart from just the passing rate itself, parents should also pay attention to score distributions. The highest possible AP score is a 5, and the lowest passing score is a 3. A school may have a high passing rate, but it is important to know the proportion of students receiving 4’s and 5’s, not just 3’s. Different scores may earn a student different credits at certain colleges. Although it is important for passing rates to be high, the environment of the school will also contribute to your child’s success. School should be a place where students should feel comfortable, safe, and welcomed. It is now more important than ever that your child feels safe at school, but as a parent, you should be certain that you feel comfortable just the same as you send your child off to that school every weekday.

Guidance counselors that care about your child’s future Most importantly, students should feel comfortable reaching out to guidance counselors and advisors. Having supportive guidance counselors and understanding teachers can truly have a positive impact on your child’s high school experience. Counselors should be available to aid with schedules, college applications, college essays, and even personal issues. Good college advisors and counselors are imperative to making the college application process as seamless as possible. It is important to make sure that guidance counselors and college advisors are accessible to students at all times. Overall, there are many factors to consider when selecting the right private school for your child. The importance of these factors may vary depending on your child’s interests and priorities. Although this information may seem overwhelming, it should be helpful in narrowing down which school is the best fit for your child. With such amazing options in the area, no matter where your child ends up, they will be receiving an amazing education.

CAN DO KID

Cypress Bay Student Chosen to Serve as Broward Center Teen Ambassador BY STACEY BOMSER

C

ypress Bay High School freshman Shriya Jhaveri is giving new meaning to art appreciation. Not only is she a classic pianist and proficient painter, Shriya is now promoting the performing arts through her role as a Broward Center for the Performing Arts Teen Ambassador. Shriya says being a Teen Ambassador allows her to give back to the community while representing her generation and promoting the arts. “My world revolves around the arts and preserving them means everything to me,” she shares. “I enjoy being exposed to so many different genres.” The Teen Ambassador program helps foster art appreciation amongst young people. In addition to volunteering at the Broward Center, Teen Ambassadors act as in-house theatre critics, writing reviews of the productions they have seen. “I really enjoy the thought that our reviews may spark a new interest in the theatrical arts or reignite an old flame of passion that reminded someone about their love of theatre,” explains Shriya. She says the reviews satisfy her love for writing. “Writing reviews for the shows we watch is not a challenging feat; however, you must understand how to

balance your review and organize its components into three main sections: a plot overview, the performance, and a detailed description of the lighting, special effects, sets and costumes.” As an artist herself, Shriya says her favorite part of theatre and the performing arts is “watching a story that I had visualized myself come to life before my very eyes: the feeling of excitement that is created, not just for the actors but for the audience as well, when a production is finally put together and going live.” As a musician and visual artist, Shriya has a unique appreciation for all that goes into musical theatre. “Classical music, like musical theatre, is a way to express thoughts and emotions through a medium other than words; in this case, sound. Musical theatre incorporates classical music to a large extent. Several musicals with settings of two or more centuries ago, such as Les Misérables, utilize live orchestras for added emphasis and authenticity.” Painting is Shriya’s other passion. She says art has always been her getaway. Although she has experimented with multiple mediums, watercolor is her preferred style. “I recently developed a strong liking to watercolor. The subtle backgrounds and potent sub-

jects draw attention and are very easy on the eyes.” Shriya encourages everyone to develop an appreciation for the arts. “Art plays an integral role in all of our lives. Without art, our lives would be monotone and mundane. Art changes the way we think by creating a more positive mindset. Research shows that engaging in a form of art, whether it be through dance, music, or visual, overall makes us happier, healthier individuals.” Shriya is one of 26 students in the tri-county area selected to serve as Broward Center Teen Ambassadors. To read her production reviews, or that of other Teen Ambassadors, go to www.browardcenterteenambassadors.com.

CAN DO KID

Student Makes Voice Heard Through Podcast BY STACEY BOMSER

L

eo Jungermann is not your typical ten-year-old. The Gator Run Elementary School fifth grader travels the country playing travel hockey, with games as far away as Washington DC and Chicago, and records his own podcast called Anything in the World. The thought-provoking podcast focuses on topics that appeal to all ages like holidays, vacations and the importance of teamwork. Leo says he selected the name Anything in the World because it gives him freedom to talk about whatever is on his mind. “I chose the name because my brother once said it when he was pretending to do a YouTube video and I found it smart because I noticed that it would mean I could talk about anything.” In choosing what subjects to cover, Leo says he usually looks at the calendar to see if there is something special taking place during the month. “If there isn’t, I just take something of my own and I create it, like in Episode 0, which is about some of my cool facts.” Even when talking about himself, Leo goes into each podcast prepared with a script. “Based on the structure my dad builds for each episode, we research and then I write a script. When I’m recording and think it’s better to change some words, I just wing it.”

Leo acknowledges that writing the script is the most challenging part of doing the podcast because of all the research involved, but it’s important to have organized thoughts in order to produce a popular and successful show. He says Anything in the World has received a very positive reaction.

“Adults say that it is impressive for a kid my age to have such a great speaking voice,” shares Leo. “My friends (the kids) always ask to get a shout out, to be featured, or even for me to help them build their own show.” He encourages other children to have a voice and make their opinions known. “I think it’s important for kids to express their opinions because this can cause effects later on in their life, like getting a job, getting people to know them, or even being elected for a public role.” For now, Leo is just enjoying the experience. “It makes me happy to record the podcast. I have so much fun and I like when people know me better.” From listening to his show, you would never know Leo is actually a shy kid. “I decided to start a podcast because at first I wanted a YouTube channel but I was kind of shy in front of the camera, so when I listened to some podcasts with my dad and I tried one episode, I found it a lot more comfortable because I didn’t have to show up on the camera.” Anything in the World is available on many platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, SoundCloud and more. The full list can be found at https://campsite.bio/aitwpodcast. You can interact with Leo on Instagram @aitwpodcast.

they had the confidence to finish it.” Storey says the training program was designed specifically for the girls by Heidy Arellano, a worldclass athlete with ten-plus years of experience training women to run marathons, who also happens to be a Girl Scout mom. The girls were encouraged in their endeavor by members of the Weston City Commission. Storey says Mayor Daniel Stermer presented the Brownies with 5K fun patches and congratulated them on their commitment and discipline in achieving the goal they set for themselves. In addition, Alfredo Aguirre, the Rotary Club’s race team coordinator, visited the troop. According to Storey, he shared some facts about the race, how it benefits the community and charity work, and gave them a motivational pep talk. When race day finally came, the girls were ready. The troop ran as a group for most of the race, but the girls were allowed to sprint to the finish line. They all finished with huge smiles on their faces and a true sense of accomplishment. “In the end I felt tired but when I saw the finish line, I thought to myself, ‘Wow! I really did it.’” shared Angelina Infante. “I was so proud of myself. I feel like I can accomplish anything.”

T

he girls in Weston Brownie Troop 14005 have accomplished something many adults have not. This group of second and third grade Girl Scouts ran their first 5K. After eight weeks of training, the troop ran in the Rotary Club of Weston’s Run for Tomorrow. To prepare for the race, the girls ran three days a week. “They trained as a troop every Tuesday evening running the same route of the 5K, increasing length every week,” explains Troop Leader Jennifer Storey. “They were also given a customized training program in an App to train with their parents the other days. Training was designed so that the girls would have run 3.1 miles the week before the 5K, so on the day of the race

Isabella Delerme added, “I felt very happy to cross the finish line with my mommy and learned that slow and steady wins the race too.” Victoria Avar says she learned a valuable lesson from this experience. “If you really want it, work hard and you can achieve it!” Storey says she was really impressed with her troop because following the 5K, many of the girls participated in the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge 1-mile Family Health Walk with their schools. She says the girls now have their sights set on another race. “The troop was so excited to finish their first 5K that it will most likely become a tradition of ours. As the girls grow, so will the distance. It won’t be a surprise for anyone if these girls run the halfmarathon in a few years.”

Falcon Cove Gifted Classes Participate in Disney Education Program BY STACEY BOMSER

F

ield trips are typically to museums or historical sites, but the Falcon Cove Middle School gifted classes recently completed an overnight field trip to Walt Disney World. Students participated in Disney’s Youth Education Series (YES). This was the first time all three grades (six, seven and eight) took part in the Disney YES program. Two years ago, only eighth graders participated in this unique experience. The Disney theme parks serve as learning laboratories for the Youth Education Series which offers accredited, standards-based field studies designed to reinforce classroom lessons. Sixth grade gifted students completed the Introduction to Global Citizenship course at EPCOT. While visiting the various World Showcase countries, students explored other cultures and developed

cultural awareness and global citizenship. “Students worked in small groups to learn about how culture is transmitted, how we can engage with and learn about other cultures and spoke to a person from another country to learn about their culture,” explained 6th grade teacher Phyllis Zuri. “Students learned to be more aware and sensitive to cultural differences and how to positively interact with people through digital tools and social customs.” Seventh grade gifted students took part in the Sustainable Practices in Wildlife Conservation course at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. During this environmental studies program, students discovered how people and animals are connected and how they respond to environmental challenges. “This interactive program allows for students to work in small groups to explore challenges that real life communities face when trying to balance economic and population growth without causing further damage to existing ecosystems,” explained 7th grade teacher Harvey Lipshutz. “The program challenges provided students an

opportunity to apply what they have learned from the classroom lessons on Ecology.” Eighth grade gifted students also participate in a science program. The Science of Disney Imagineering: Gravity class was conducted at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Students discovered how gravity and Newton’s laws of motion are fundamental to the creation of theme park rides. “Students identified how energy changes during the Tower of Terror and Rockin’ Roller Coaster rides,” explained 8th grade teacher Gina Powers. “They also discussed how gravity is used to make theme park rides more thrilling. Students used ramps and roller coaster replicas to demonstrate how potential and kinetic energy can be changed to make a ride faster and more exciting.” The overnight field trip also included a day spent together at the Magic Kingdom. “This was a community-building experience for students and teachers in our program with education extensions that matched components of each grade-level curriculum,” noted Ms. Powers.

CAN DO KID

Aspiring Artist Turns Trash to Treasure BY STACEY BOMSER

C

ypress Bay High School junior Dani Cerutti has two passions – creating beautiful works of art and helping save the environment. By combining the two, she has been able to draw attention to the importance of environmental stewardship and earned herself the top prize at a county-wide art show. Dani’s project, Seals Don’t Smoke, was named Best in Show at the Broward Art Guild Youth Exhibit. While participating in a Fort Lauderdale Beach Sweep clean-up day, Dani was shocked by the amount of cigarette butts in the sand. “In only a couple hours, we’d collected enough cigarette butts to fill a five-gallon bucket. Seeing this helped spark ideas and I knew I could make something impactful with the butts, given the crazy amount of them.” It took her about two months to complete Seals Don’t Smoke. She painstakingly sorted then glued over 1,500 cigarette butts to create the image of a seal sitting on a shoreline. “I hope that my art makes people realize just how big of an issue beach pollution is. I hope it causes people to stop for a moment and think about how much we really are hurting the Earth,” shares Dani. “The amount of trash we leave behind on a daily basis is insane, and the fact that so much of it lands on the beach is definitely something we should pay attention to. Most importantly, I hope my art inspires people to take initiative themselves and to want to do some-

thing about the issues going on.” Dani has become quite an artistic activist. She has created two other cigarette butt art pieces. “Both are large canvases with words formed from the cigarette butts. One reads Save Our Earth and the other Save Our Beach.” She has also been experimenting with other mixed media pieces using miscellaneous trash she found on the beach. “The most interesting include Barbie heads, lighters, deodorant sticks and a syringe,” notes Dani. “In the middle of the piece it says Beach Day out of water bottle caps.” While Dani has chosen to use her artistic talents to spread environmental awareness messages, she is hoping others will see it and get inspired to act themselves. “I want people to see my art and get involved in causes that they feel passionate about. Of course, I want people to gain motivation to help with the beach pollution issues, and to do anything they can to help out. It’s easy to talk about wanting to help or start a project, but it’s another thing to actually do so. I want my artwork to help give people a push in the right direction.”

Falcon Cove Students Flock To Home Economics Elective BY STACEY BOMSER

H

ome Economics is making a resurgence. It is one of the most popular elective courses at Falcon Cove Middle School. Just like the course of yesteryear, which was taken by many parents of current middle schoolers, today’s students are signing up for Home Ec to learn important life skills such as cooking, sewing and personal finance. Family and Consumer Sciences Instructor Patricia Brignola first taught Home Economics when Falcon Cove opened in 2000. The course was discontinued for some time but was brought back last year as a sixth and seventh grade elective. “Parents of my former students requested the return of this important life skills class,” explains Mrs. Brignola. “I think this elective class is so important for this generation to learn basic, yet valued, beneficial skills they need to succeed in life.”

72 FEBRUARY 2020 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

Mrs. Brignola, who holds a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, has created a curriculum with a strong emphasis on culinary and meal preparation, food science, as well as nutrition and wellness. She is hoping to do a field trip to the

grocery store this semester to teach students how to make food choices within a budget. Sewing is another life skill the students have learned; it’s part of a lesson on textiles and apparel. Mrs. Brignola taught the children how to use sewing needles, as well as how to crochet. She is now planning a class community service

project to make pillows to donate to nearby nursing homes. Seventh grader Ramiro Castillo says he is having fun in Home Ec while learning important life skills. “In Home Ec, I’ve learned how to sew and how to take care of myself. It’s been really fun so far!” Classmate Mariana Sanin likes the camaraderie of the class. “Home Ec is really fun because I get to hang out with my great friends. I learn how to sew too, and other future life skills. I love it!” Mrs. Brignola is pleased to see her students responding so positively to the course “It is very important for today’s children to learn these basic life skills such as cooking and sewing as they will one day live on their own and provide for themselves.” Personal and family finance is another subject the course will tackle this year, along with housing and interior design. The hope is that Home Economics will prepare today’s Falcon Cove students for their future adult lives.

REAL ESTATE

Are You an Empty Nester Thinking About Downsizing? BY RAMONA BAUTISTA f you are like many Weston residents, you raised your children in this community but now that they have flown the nest, you no longer need (or desire) such a large house. With many younger families now looking for larger homes, now is the ideal time to consider downsizing. Here are four good reasons to consider making a move: 1. Take the Profits and Reduce Debt: Empty nesters who have raised kids in a home that they have owned for a decade or more are likely to walk away from the sale of the house with a profit. If the windfall is big enough, the proceeds can be used to purchase a less expensive home in cash or with a sizable down payment that will lead to much lower monthly costs. Profit from a home sale can also be used to eliminate mortgage debt completely, as well as reduce or pay off other debts, including credit cards and auto loans. 2. Move to a Home That Fits Your Lifestyle Homes age along with their occupants. A house that falls into disrepair may be more difficult to live in or could even become downright unsafe. In addition to upkeep, the house may need to be remodeled to accommodate your changing physical needs. You may need to create a downstairs bedroom, for instance, or install a stair lift. 3. Lower Your Monthly Maintenance Bills Why pay to cool empty rooms that you don’t really use? Lower your monthly maintenance bills and take the extra money to travel or get involved with other hobbies and that you have been putting off. 4. Move Closer To Your Kids Often adult children move to another town because of work, a spouse, or adventure. You can be near your grandchildren. And they can be nearby to help you with medical issues that may arise, and you can be nearby to give them a hand, too.

Less invasive option for valve disease treatment offers benefit with fewer risks Aortic valve stenosis is one of the most common and serious conditions affecting the heart’s valves. It Robert J. Cubeddu, MD is a narrowing of the aortic valve opening, which is the passage for oxygen-rich blood to leave the heart and go out into the body. When the valve opening is narrowed, the flow of this blood is blocked or reduced. This condition is most common in people 65 or older, severely affecting nearly 500,000 people in the United States each year. It can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, congestive heart failure, and, ultimately, death if left untreated. A revolutionary approach to treatment Replacing the diseased valve is the standard treatment for most patients with aortic stenosis. Until recently, however, the replacement had to be done through a surgical procedure in which the patient’s chest was opened in order to access the heart. In recent years, the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure has revolutionized treatment for aortic stenosis. It is minimally invasive, allowing the surgeon to replace the valve through a catheter placed in the femoral

artery, which runs up the thigh, through the abdomen and to the heart. A multitude of studies have shown TAVR to be a safe and effective alternative to traditional valve replacement, offering patients minimal risk and discomfort, a shorter hospital stay (usually only one or two days vs. five to seven days with the open procedure), and a prompt recovery. “Aortic stenosis is a condition that offers a malignant course. As with open heart surgery, this procedure cures the condition,” says Robert J. Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine and Section Head for Structural Heart Disease at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Tomsich Heart and Vascular Center, “Many centers offer TAVR but our team has tremendous expertise and experience in this type of treatment.” Specialists in Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Heart and Vascular Center have more than 10 years of experience with TAVR procedures and the center performs among the highest volume of implants in the state of Florida. Our experience in TAVR and our expertise in structural heart disease translate to the best possible outcomes for our patients. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK outh Floridians are becoming used to not being able to use their tap water. Every week, it seems there’s a boil-water order affecting people’s homes and businesses. Our county has made major improvements over the past decades. Residents may remember a time when the water had a chlorine taste although deemed appropriate for drinking. Still, there are times that all of us have been under a boil water order. Among the most frequent causes of unsafe water: breaks in water mains or sewer lines; contamination, such as E. coli and other bacteria; and power failures at pumping stations. Outages at pumping stations are common as a result of storms and power lines downed. The most common health problem is severe intestinal issues. Typically, the boil-water order is lifted after two consecutive days of clean water tests. Until you get the “all clear”, here are some tips to keep in mind: Washing your hands ▸  Do not use tap water to wash your hands. You can use bottled water or cooled water you’ve boiled for at least a minute. ▸  You can use hand sanitizers that don’t require rinsing or hand wipes. ▸  Another alternative is a PuzzleJunction.com homemade solution of two teaspoons of household bleach in one gallon of water. ▸  Don’t use your hands to touch ready-to-eat food. Use singleuse gloves to prevent spreading bacteria. Using Tap Water ▸  Basically, do not use tap water unless you’ve boiled it for at least a minute. That means no cleaning, dish washing, brushing your teeth or drinking. ▸  Use bottled or boiled water to manually wash dishes. Don’t use your dishwasher. ▸  If you don’t have power or can’t boil water, mix eight drops (1/8 teaspoon) of unscented household bleach per gallon of water and allow to stand for 30 minutes. If the water is cloudy in appearance, add 16 drops (¼ teaspoon) and let stand for 30 minutes. The water will be safe to consume but may have a chlorine odor or taste. Making Ice ▸  Ice bagged or made before the boil-water order was issued is still OK to use. ▸  After the order is issued, throw out any ice in your ice maker. Don’t restart the ice maker until the order is lifted. Clean the interior of the ice machine, ice trays and built-in ice maker with two teaspoons of household bleach in one gallon of water before restarting the ice maker. ▸  Disconnect or turn off water vending machines, drinking fountains, icemaking units and soda machines and prevent their use. ▸  Replace your water filters after the order is lifted.

What Does Child Support Cover? BY EVAN H. BARON, ESQ. ’m often asked, “what expenses does child support actually cover”? The answer is very general in nature. It is a contribution to all monthly household expenses, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, etc. It is a contribution towards the regular monthly expenses of the parent’s household. A parent cannot designate the expense his/her support payment should be used for. It cannot be deposited into a separate account solely for the benefit of a child. In addition, child support does not cover some normal and customary expenses for the children such as extracurricular activities, uncovered medical expenses, school expenses, college funding. All of these expenses must be addressed separately as additional contributions from each parent. Private school tuition is also not credited against the monthly child support obligation, as private school is considered a privilege and not a necessity since a child can attend public school at no cost.

The laws in Florida generally allow a judge or the parties quite a bit of discretion when finalizing family law cases. However, there is one particular area of the law which requires strict compliance. This concerns the issue of child support. In either a Dissolution of Marriage or a Paternity action, child support must be addressed. The parents cannot waive a child’s right to financial support, nor can they deviate from the state-mandated monthly amount as determined by the Florida Legislature in their Child Support Guidelines. Even if both parents agree, a monthly support amount cannot be less than required by the Guidelines, although it can certainly be greater. The monthly amount is based upon a number of factors. The primary factor is the income of each parent. If a parent is not employed the court will impute income, generally equal to a minimum wage, unless said parent has the ability to be employed at a higher income. Once each party’s percentage of contribution is determined, a Guideline Chart will establish the minimum support payment. The child support amount is also impacted by the number of overnight visitations exercised by each parent. Generally speaking, the more overnights exercised by the paying parent, the less support he/she will probably pay. Additional considerations that are included in determining the monthly payment are the cost of daycare/aftercare and health insurance premiums for the minor child’s coverage. Ultimately, whatever child support obligation applies to your family, that support is available to contribute towards the everyday expenses necessary to provide a roof over the child’s head, food on their table and clothes on their backs. n The law firm of Evan H. How Often Do You Hit Solid Golf Shots? BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL mproving your golf game begins by improving your ball striking, as there’s nothing in golf quite like making pure contact. Once you experience this sensation, you’ll be hooked, trying to repeat it over and over again. Achieving solid contact tends to be difficult for many golfers; it’s what separates the pros and better players from average to higher-handicap golfers. The good news is, if you experiment with the accompanying tips and drills, you can learn how to hit solid and pure golf shots more often. Hands forward upon impact – As you strike the golf ball, the grip end of the club needs to be leading the hands and club head through the hitting area (a mandatory ingredient for hitting solid iron shots). This move causes the club head to compress the ball into the ground, which helps make your divot after the ball, not before. Correct posture – The second key to achieving solid contact is having correct posture throughout the swing, as this allows you to swing the club on the proper plane. The majority of golfers who struggle with making solid contact lose their posture as the club head connects with the ball. This leads to many miss-hits; fat and thin shots, hooks, slices and chunks. It is essential that you keep your posture, just as it is at address, throughout the swing. Control the Clubface – The final ingredient for solid ball striking is controlling the clubface through impact. In other words, the face of your club must be square when it contacts the ball. Most golfers have the face of the club too open at impact, which leads to miss-hits that cause loss of power and distance. The clubface should rotate from open (prior to impact) to square (at impact) to slightly closed (after impact). The timing of this face rotation is what separates good ball strikers from notso-good ball strikers. Proper practice will improve this timing. Here are a few practice drills to try: Golf Ball drill – By placing an extra golf ball behind your ball (12 to 14 inches behind the target line), you will learn to strike the ball with a descending blow and have your hands leading the club head through the hitting area. If you use a scooping motion (hitting the ground before you make contact with the ball), you won’t be able to strike your ball without first hitting the extra ball. Posture drill – Controlling your posture throughout the swing is something that all good players do, and most amateur players don’t. When the clubface strikes the ball, you must return to the same posture that you had at address. Practice by facing a mirror and taking a half backswing, then swing the club down to the ball, and stop. You should return to your address position. Keep repeating this motion until it starts to feel natural. On the range, run through this drill before you hit each practice shot. Release the Clubface drill – Put a band-aid on the back of your left wrist. On your down swing, turn your left hand over, so the band-aid is pointing down toward the ground as you swing the club head through the hitting area. On your practice swings, do this slowly, so you experience the feel of the club head turning over upon impact. When hitting balls, try to just let this motion happen, and after a while it will become automatic.

T

his is a question I am asked frequently, especially at the end of orthodontic treatment. The question is very logical. We have been working to align the teeth for 2 years and everyone is excited to unveil their new smile to the world. The last thing that anyone wants is to leave the wisdom teeth to spoil our great work. On the other hand, the extraction of third molars is usually carried out by an Oral Surgeon using some form of sedation. The decision to refer must be thought out and based on science. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the decision to avoid extracting the Third Molars (AKA Wisdom Teeth) depends on their meeting the following criteria: completely erupted and nonimpacted, completely functional, painless, free of decay, disease-free, capable of being properly cleaned. As can be seen from this list, the academy of oral surgery leans heavily toward extraction. This list fails to aid in my decision making in most cases as the average teen completes orthodontic treatment between 13-14 yrs old and the wisdom teeth erupt between 17-21 years old. What I prefer to use as a guide is the anatomy of the mandible (lower jaw) and the developmental stage of the Third Molars. For example, there is a nerve that runs the length of the lower border of the mandible called the inferior alveolar nerve. Among other things, this nerve provides for our feeling in the lower lip. The Third Molars develop right over this nerve and it is not until around 15-16 yrs old that the roots of the teeth tend to approximate and sometimes even wrap around the nerve. I allow the third molar to grow and hopefully find a reasonable eruption path prior to the completion of development of its roots. If I find that there is too much pressure being placed on the 12 year molars, I will refer for evaluation prior to the full development of the roots. What this accomplishes is the removal of the Third Molars with a much reduced chance of damage to the nerve. As in most situations, timing is everything. Our protocol consists of consistent retainer wear as soon as braces are removed. We then monitor the third molars until they either come in or are removed. Consistent retainer wear is more than sufficient in maintaining that beautiful smile through the process. In fact, we are recommending long term night time wear of the retainer even if the Third molars are removed. As it turns out, the eruption of the Third molars is the most well known, but not the only factor which can cause shifting of the teeth over time. The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. What is Breast Implant Illness? BY: DR. CHARLES A. MESSA III, M.D., F.A.C.S. reast Implant Illness (BII) is a term used by women who have breast implants and who self- identify and describe a variety of symptoms including autoimmune issues, muscle aches, joint pain, fatigue, hair loss, headaches, photosensitivity, chronic pain, rash, anxiety, brain fog, sleep disturbance, depression, neurologic issues and hormonal issues that they feel are directly connected to their saline or silicone

B

breast implants. The recent increase in patients reporting Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms appears to be related to increased awareness based on social media and presence of breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIAALCL). There is one Facebook group alone with more than 50,000 members, all of whom report Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms. There is no diagnostic testing specifically for Breast Implant Illness (BII). This is one of the current areas of focus for the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation, the research arm of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There are tests for autoimmune diseases that can be performed to evaluate for potential causes of a patient’s symptoms. There are patients who have symptoms they attribute to Breast Implant Illness (BII) with positive immune testing and others with all laboratory tests which show no abnormalities. In 1999, The Institute of Medicine Committee on the Safety of Silicone conducted an extensive review of the available literature and concluded there was no demonstrated clear link between silicone implants and any systemic illness. There have been studies of many different sizes and design to look at the safety of breast implants themselves. These have looked at specific autoimmune disorders and diseases. These studies show little to no links between breast implants and any disease. Studies of patients who have symptoms that they have related to their breast implants have not shown consistent laboratory abnormalities to define a distinct syndrome. To-date, there has been very little in the way of research into this entity that has been labelled Breast Implant Illness (BII) by women with breast implants. Various studies show different degrees of improvement in patient symptoms after removal of their breast implants, some of which are temporary, and some showing permanent resolution of symptoms. There are no studies which specifically show which symptoms may or may not improve with implant removal with or without capsulectomy. There is no current definitive epidemiological evidence to support a direct link between breast implants and any specific disease process. There are many factors that can affect the interaction between a patient and her breast implants. Further study is required to determine the best way to potentially screen patients prior to breast implant surgery and to determine which of the multitude of reported symptoms might improve with implant and capsule removal. A lack of a direct, proven scientific link does not mean that the symptoms experienced by these patients are not real. Some patients have legitimate concerns about a potential link between breast implants and symptoms. For individuals who have breast implants and complains of Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms options can include: further medical work up with or without the consultation of a rheumatologist, observation without medical work up, implant removal without capsulectomy, exchange with or without capsulectomy, removal with total capsulectomy, or removal with en bloc capsulectomy. As there is no definitive link between the often subjective and divergent list of symptoms, and no means for testing, there is no ‘known’ risk. Many of the symptoms described by breast implant patients are experienced by the general public on a regular basis with or without implants. . n Dr. Messa is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery & the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, & a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. PET CARE

Periodontal Disease in Dogs BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

M

ore than 85% of dogs over four years of age have periodontal disease. It starts when bacteria form plaque on the teeth. Within days, minerals in the saliva bond with plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gums and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth, leading to tooth loss. Inflammation of the bone and tooth support structures is referred to as periodontitis. The combination of gingivitis and periodontitis is known as periodontal disease. Bacteria associated with dental disease can travel in the bloodstream to infect the heart, kidneys, and liver. What are the signs of periodontal disease? The signs of periodontal disease include: ▸  Bad breath ▸  Redness or bleeding along the gum line ▸  Drooling, which may be tinged with blood ▸  Difficulty chewing ▸  Pawing at the mouth ▸  Loose or missing teeth ▸  Facial swelling, especially under the eyes ▸  Nasal discharge ▸  Gum recession How is periodontal disease diagnosed? Your veterinarian can see signs of gingivitis and tartar buildup by examining your dog’s mouth. However, since most periodontal disease occurs beneath the gum line, the only way to truly assess your dog’s mouth is to perform an examination while your pet is under anesthesia. Your veterinarian can use a dental probe to measure any loss of attachment around each tooth and take dental radiographs (x-rays) to assess for bone loss, abscesses, and other problems. How is periodontal disease treated? Treatment depends on the severity of the disease. If your dog has mild periodontal disease, consisting of gingivitis without any bone loss, a thorough dental cleaning that includes the area beneath the gums, followed by dental polishing, can help reverse the problem. After a dental cleaning, your veterinarian may also recommend a plaque prevention gel that adheres to the teeth surfaces to inhibit tartar. Your veterinarian may also recommend a dental sealant that helps prevent tartar from accumulating on teeth. If there has been a loss of the supporting structures around the teeth, however, this cannot be reversed. Your veterinarian may need to apply antibiotics beneath the gums and perform dental procedures, which may include tooth extraction. Ask your veterinarian what dental hygiene methods are recommended for your dog and which dental diets or treats are best for your pet. Don’t forget to keep scheduled appointments for follow-up dental checkups. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1.
