“We swore we weren’t ready for senior living. Then we saw The Palace.”
Jack & Evelyn Miller
“We were stunned. We stayed in the Four Seasons in Paris once, and The Palace in Weston looked better. Ten minutes after we walked in the door, we realized we had never seen senior living like this. Everything you can think of is at your fingertips. Chef-prepared meals in the dining room. A social director who makes cruise ships look dull. A staff trained to deliver such a high level of care and comfort they’ve been named #1 in America. Everywhere you look, it’s 5-star all the way. But you need good friends to share it with. Our crowd at The Palace are some of the best new friends we’ve ever met, and every single one of us will tell you: ‘We wish we had found The Palace sooner.’ ”
The Palace at Weston is taking reservations. Now is the time to visit our spectacular Weston Leasing Center at 15951 SW 41st St., Suite 500, Davie, FL 33331.

Everybody Counts in Census 2020
T
his month we will all be part of history. The 2020 Census will be the first to be completed online, but there are options to complete by mail or even phone if you prefer. By definition, a census is an official count or survey of a population. Our Constitution calls for an “actual enumeration” to be completed once a decade. The first census was taken in 1790. It included the original 13 States, plus the districts of Kentucky, Maine, and Vermont, and the Southwest Territory (Tennessee). The 1790 enumeration asked for the name of the head of the family and the number of persons in each household of the following descriptions: free white males of 16 years and upward (to assess the country’s industrial and military potential); free white males under 16 years; free white females; all other free persons; and slaves. Census 2020 will ask questions such as the number of people living or staying in a home on April 1, 2020; whether the home is owned with or without a mortgage, rented or occupied without rent; and the name, sex, age, date of birth and race of each person in the home. When filling out your census it is important to include every person living in the household, regardless of age, citizenship or immigration status. Your responses are confidential and protected by federal law. The Census Bureau cannot share responses identifying individuals with the public or other federal agencies, including immigration authorities and law enforcement. The results of Census 2020 will have a direct impact on our communities, so it is critical that everyone is counted. Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states, counties and cities each year for things such as health care, fire departments, school funding, and even construction of roads and highways. Census data also determines our political future by determining how many seats in Congress each state gets and legislative districts. Please keep an eye on your mailbox this month and be sure to take the steps to complete Census 2020. Your community is counting on you being counted.

#WestonCounts in Census 2020 BY STACEY BOMSER
C
ensus 2020 is finally here. In the coming weeks, every household in the country will be asked to complete the U.S. Census. It’s quick, easy and confidential – and for the first time the census can be completed online making it convenient as well. “Every address in Weston will receive a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau in mid-March and this is when you can and should respond,” explains Mayor Daniel Stermer. “Don’t delay – respond right away. That’s our motto. Count everyone staying in your home as of April 1st and if you have doubts or questions, just call us and we will be happy to answer them.” Mayor Stermer says it is vitally important that every Weston resident be counted, regardless of age or legal status, because census data affects the lives of all of us for the next ten years. It also affects the distribution of more than $1.5 trillion in federal funds annually; money for things such as first responders, heath care, food assistance programs, after-care programs, school lunches, road construction, and so much more. While that $1.5 trillion is allocated to states and communities across the country, by completing Census 2020 you will ensure Weston gets its
fair share. As a result of the 2010 Census, Weston directly benefited as a recipient of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) funds. Weston received almost $2.2 million in CDBG allocations and almost $900,000 in SHIP allocations providing for housing assistance through programs such as the Down Payment Assistance Program, Minor Home Repair Program and Barrier Free/Special Needs Program. Additionally, Weston received almost $2.2 million from FEMA and the Florida Department of Emergency Management for stormwater management improvements, nearly $580,000 from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for construction of the roundabout at Bonaventure Boulevard and Saddle Club Road, almost $9000 to start a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, $3500 from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for law enforcement training through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG), a $100,000 grant from FDOT to install bus shelters throughout the city, and a nearly $600,000 Florida Department of Environmental Protection Energy Efficiency/ Conservation grant to install LED street lights on our main roads.
To ensure Weston continues to receive the funding it deserves, it is imperative that every household respond to the 2020 Census by April 1st and be sure to count everyone staying in the home, even if they are not family members. Count everyone, from one day old to over 100 years. It’s estimated that five percent of children under the age of five were not counted in the 2010 Census, and census results affect many programs specifically for children utilized by Weston families such as VPK and the National School Lunch Program. Children away at college will be counted at the on-campus (dorm) or off-campus residence where they live the most; however, students can be placed on their parent’s census form as well, as there is a way to select that the individual is “away at college”. To learn more about Census 2020 go to www.westonfl.org/ Census2020. For specific questions or concerns, call Weston City Hall at 954-385-2000.

A
s the Weston University program winds to an end, students are reflecting on the world of knowledge gained about the inner workings of local government. The one-of-a-kind civic education course provides a select group of high school juniors and seniors with a first-hand look at how our municipal government works with monthly fieldtrips and hands-on activities. On Community Services Day, Weston U students interacted with representatives from the City’s Parks & Recreation, Landscaping, and Public Works departments. The day began with an exercise to design your own dream park. Students’ imaginations ran wild with prospective parks featuring everything from ball parks and beaches to a Chick-fil-A restaurant. The class then got a chance to tour Peace Mound Park, viewing the Weston History Walk and testing out some of the playground equipment, before visiting one of Weston’s pumping stations and mitigation areas. Other activities included learning proper tree trimming techniques and stormwater and sewer maintenance. Development Services Day featured a visit to the offices of Calvin, Giordano and Associations (CGA),
Weston’s contract provider for planning, zoning and engineering services. Working alongside CGA employees, students reviewed engineering maps, examined different sod samples, and utilized survey equipment. This insightful experience allowed students to explore career opportunities outside of traditional city government roles. Last month, the Weston University program focused on law enforcement services with a field trip to the Broward Sheriff’s Office facility and gun range at Markham Park. This month, the curriculum focuses on finance and technology services. Students will learn how local taxes are figured, explore sources of City revenue, and examine the Weston budget. They will also discover how the City uses technology to function and connect with residents.

Weston University Takes Learning Out of the Classroom
The seven-month program concludes in April with a City Commission simulation, with students using their knowledge of local government to carry out a mock commission meeting using actual agenda items. A one-day field trip to Washington, D.C., is also planned to provide students with an understanding of the relationship between local and federal government.

Weston Named One of the Ten Safest Cities in Florida BY STACEY BOMSER
G
ood news Weston residents – we live in one of the safest cities in Florida. A recent study by HomeSnacks ranked Weston as the seventh safest city in Florida. As impressive as this is, it is even more meaningful when you see that Weston was the largest city on the list, with all of the cities with higher rankings having populations under 20,000. To determine the rankings, researchers reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report which summarizes the number of crimes in each city per year. The two criteria used were the number of violent crimes (murders, assaults, rapes and armed robberies) and property crimes (thefts, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts) per capita. According to the survey, Weston was the second safest city in terms of property crimes with 521 per 100,000 residents and ranked 13th for violent crimes, with 57 per 100,000 residents. Weston holds an overall Snackability score of 9.5 out of ten. In case you were wondering, Satellite Beach in Brevard County was ranked as the safest city in Florida. Rounding out the top ten were Marco Island,
Tequesta, Longboat Key, Key Biscayne, Sanibel, Indian Harbour Beach, North Palm Beach and Parkland. You might be wondering how Parkland made the list after the mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas high school two years ago, but the report stated “School shootings don’t really indicate how safe a place really is. It’s also a testament to how
much of a surprise the shooting was here -Parkland is a super safe community with little crime overall.” The same study found the most dangerous cities in Florida to be Florida City, Lake City and Opa Locka, in that order. Additionally, Weston was named the 22nd Best City to Live in Florida in 2020 by HomeSnacks. That study was based on criteria such as median home values, median income, population density (the higher the better), unemployment rate, commute time, crime, education levels, health insurance coverage, and poverty rates. It noted that Weston has a population of 70,220, median income of $100,110 (with 18 percent of households earning more than $200,000), median home value of $469,000, and an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent. Weston is also a highly educated city with 62 percent of the population holding a Bachelor’s Degree or higher (with ten percent holding a professional or Doctorate degree). HomeSnacks tabulates data from the Census, FBI, OpenStreetMaps, and dozens of other sources into bite-sized studies to help understand what it’s like to live in different communities across the country.
Spring Cleaning Made Simple with Help from City BY STACEY BOMSER
M
arch 19th marks the first day of spring – and now that spring has sprung, this the ideal time to do some “spring cleaning”. The City of Weston is making it easy to get rid of your garbage and unwanted stuff with special trash collections in the coming weeks. If your home underwent a deep cleaning, chances are you have unearthed items such as paint cans for colors no longer on your walls,
propane tanks, or a collection of dead batteries. You might even have some old cell phones no longer in service or outdated TV sets and computers. All of this can be safely and properly disposed of at the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal and Electronics Collection Event taking place on Sunday, April 26th from 9am to 3pm at the Weston Public Works Services Center located on South Post Road. The January event drew 815 participants, who disposed of 31,462 pounds of household hazardous waste and 26,761 pounds of electronics for recycling. The top items were latex paint, lead acid batteries, corrosive, toxic and flammable liquids and solids, as well as motor oil. If you have bulk items to get rid of such as old furniture, broken

sports equipment, even unwanted appliances, take advantage of the Bulk Trash Pick-up scheduled for April 22nd-25th, depending upon your regular trash collection date. Bulk items should be placed at or near the same location where your regular garbage is collected by 7am on pick-up day. Spring cleaning may also result in the need to get rid of paperwork, including personal and sensitive documents. Each year, the Broward Sheriff’s Office hosts a Shred-a-Thon event in Weston, where residents can drop off personal documents and data to be shredded to prevent identity theft. This event is held in conjunction with Operation Medicine Cabinet, which allows residents to safely and properly dispose of expired or unwanted prescription medication. At the most recent Shred-a-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet

event, 392 participants dropped off more than 21,000 pounds of sensitive paperwork for shredding. Additionally, 173 individuals disposed of medications. For information on upcoming Shred-a-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet events in nearby communities visit https://www.sheriff.org/CS/Pages/ Community-Events.aspx.

Two Popular Bands to Conclude WestonNights Concert Series BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he finale to the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series promises to be bigger and better than ever with two popular local bands taking the stage on Saturday, March 14th. Headlining the concert is one of South Florida’s hottest party bands, the Shane Duncan Band, following opening act Saving Herald. “Concertgoers can expect a little of everything that night,” explains Special Events Manager Annalisa Walker. “The Shane Duncan Band is a high-energy band specializing in Top 40, pop, rock, dance, country and disco, while Saving Herald is an alternative/grunge band made up of four local high school students who play a feel-good pop, rock and pop-punk mixture.” The Shane Duncan Band has a repertoire of over 450 songs and band leader Shane Duncan says they choose what to play on the fly based on the crowd. With such an extensive playlist there is sure to be a song to please every musical preference. The band is well-known for country rock tunes such as The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band and Chicken Fried by the Zac Brown Band. They are likely to also play some of their original songs such as Life’s Snooze Bar or Get Your Drink Up.
Saving Herald also performs original songs written by its members, which include Cypress Bay High School junior Maxx Nunn, and three friends from nearby schools. This double-feature wraps up the threeconcert series, which kicked off in November with The Pixels – Retro Eights Experience and featured a crowd-pleasing performance by the VAM Band last month. Walker says this show is expected to keep the high-energy excitement that has drawn Photo courtesy Shane Duncan Band record crowds this season. Unlike the previous concerts, the March 14th program starts at 6pm with Saving Herald followed by a full set by the Shane Duncan Band. The concert takes place at the event stage in Weston Regional Park. It is next to the park’s largest playground, where children can play before the show. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets and come early to pick the perfect seating location. Coolers are welcome, but alcohol is not permitted in the park. Walker says many attendees take advantage of the food trucks. “We typically feature three to five food trucks with an assortment of food from Photo courtesy Saving Herald pizza and hamburgers to ethnic cuisine, and even For more information on the WestonNights Outdoor Concert something to satisfy that sweet tooth,” states Walker. Climb Aboard the New G
etting to and from Miami just got easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. This premium bus service has started, and readers can get a FREE 3-DAY PASS to try South Florida’s nationally recognized transit service today. Western Broward and Miami-Dade County residents can now easily join the thousands of South Floridians who use Express Buses each day to get to work. For more information on how to get your FREE 3-DAY PASS, go to www.TryTransitFree.com. The 75 Express Bus is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and operated by Broward County Transit. It builds upon the success of the 95 Express Bus and 595 Express Bus services, which continually receive rave reviews. Riders who use those bus services rate them satisfactory or above satisfactory.
Fast, Comfortable, Convenient
The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take com-
fort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of Lyft or taxi rides home if the Express Bus is unavailable and you need to leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for an unscheduled overtime.

County to their places of employment in Miami-Dade County quickly and reliably. Morning service begins as early as 5:40am with continual buses running until 9:40am. The afternoon commute begins at 3:45pm with the last bus leaving the Miami Airport Station at 7:20pm and scheduled to arrive at the BB&T Center by 8:24pm. “The new 75 Express Service demonstrates continual growth of our commitment to residents to continue making it easier and
more convenient to use public transit. The 75 Express will offer better connectivity to Miami and give commuters an economical and stress-free option for traveling to their destination, especially those who live and work along the I-75 corridor,” said Transportation Director Chris Walton. The Express Bus system is a core component of the express lanes along I-75, I-595 and I-95. The express lanes are multi-modal facilities designed

Popular Outdoor Symphony Pops Concert Returns BY STACEY BOMSER
O
ne of the most highly anticipated cultural programs of the year is finally here. The annual Outdoor Symphony Pops Concert takes place Sunday, March 8th at Weston Town Center. An audience of all ages will gather to hear the Symphony of the Americas orchestra perform a selection of familiar pops classics, Broadway tunes, and tributes to popular performers. The melodic evening of music under the stars is presented by the
Weston Music Society, City of Weston, and Weston Town Center, in partnership with the Arts Council of Greater Weston. The program is always wellattended, and patrons are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs as seating is limited. “If you have never been to this concert, we encourage you to mark your calendar and join us this year,” states Annalisa Walker, Special Events Manager for the City of Weston. “This free outdoor concert is fun for the entire family.” This is music to the ears of the Weston Music Society (WMS), which introduced the Outdoor Symphony Pops Concert years ago as a way to introduce more members of the community to the beauty of fine music. “The Weston Music Society used to have two indoor concerts. They were well attended, but the thought was that a free outdoor concert would allow more of the community to enjoy
Photos courtesy City of Weston
world-class music in a more relaxed venue,” explains WMS President Lou Marett. “Given the annual increases in attendance, and so many positive comments during and after this now established and highly anticipated Pops Concert, we are delighted we made this decision.” Weston City Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie especially enjoys seeing all the children in the audience. “There is nothing more enjoyable than an evening with residents of all ages, sometimes several generations of family members, coming to a world class symphony pops concert and enjoying a free cultural event right here in our own backyard. These are memories that last forever and start our youth on pathways to discovering music of all genres.”
When children attend this performance, it allows them to fully understand how the various orchestra instruments play together. Students are introduced to the individual instruments through the Weston Music Society’s In School Music Education Program, which brings professional musicians into the Weston elementary schools. Ten-year-old Luciana Koenig has discovered a love of music due to her exposure to WMS programs and concerts. “I have always loved music, but with these concerts I have loved it even more. I feel like the music is part of me now.” n The free Outdoor Symphony Pops Concert takes place from 6:30-8pm on Sunday, March 8th, at Weston Town Center near the Bell Tower. For more information call 954-389-4321.

Celebrate the Arts Day Draws Active Participants BY STACEY BOMSER
O
nce a year, Weston residents get the unique opportunity to appreciate and experience art through hands-on activities, educational exhibits and inspiring performances. It’s all part of Celebrate the Arts Day. Presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, in partnership with the City of Weston and Young at Art Museum, this day is dedicated to exposing residents to the visual, performing and literary arts and promoting all of
the cultural opportunities available in our community. One of the cornerstones of Celebrate the Arts Day is allowing event attendees to discover their inner artist through a variety of hands-on activities. One of the most popular is the 28-foot graffiti wall. This year it was themed “Earth without art is just eh” and attendees of all ages added their contributions throughout the day, drawing flowers, globes, animals and more, or simply signing their names. Another popular exhibit was the ‘playing zoo’ hosted by Youth All Stars! at which attendees could try different musical instruments. The bright blue trombone attracted many budding musicians. Aspiring artists enjoyed the open-air museum hosted by Young at Art, which included a
pottery wheel and montage made from children’s drawings. Amongst the educational exhibits were booths sponsored by the Weston Music Society, which brings familyfriendly concerts such as Cirque de la Symphonie to town each year, and the Weston Art Guild, which promotes appreciation of the visual arts with its annual Juried Art Show at the Weston library. The literary arts were represented with authors Ellen Sparer and Andres Toffoli presenting book readings, along with volunteers from the Weston Branch Library and Friends of the Weston Library. The Weston schools showcased their arts programs with performances by the Cypress Bay Lightning Drama ensemble, Tequesta Trace Middle School Cougar Band, Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder Winter Color Guard, and Sagemont Synergy Rock
Band. In addition, The Sagemont School visual arts department hosted an interactive booth as did the Cypress Bay Robotics Club. “The talent of our young students and the creativity their teachers inspire was very clearly on display at Celebrate the Arts Day, in the beautiful presentations of their booths and the exciting performances presented on stage,” shared Arts Council President Jami Nix Rahn. Weston Special Events Manager Annalisa Walker says the City is appreciative of the Arts Council’s hard work and dedication in presenting Celebrate the Arts Day. “We are grateful to the many volunteers and the Arts community who join together in presenting such as successful event that is so loved by our community.”

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Census 2020 Will Shape Our Future BY DANIEL J. STERMER, MAYOR, CITY OF WESTON ensus, Census, Census – am I being redundant? Perhaps, but that is just how important Census 2020 is, period. It is important to each and every person living in Weston, Broward County, our state, our country. We don’t just live here in Weston in a bubble (though some would like to believe we do, and I say that in a nice way). We drive on roads that take us out of our city; use healthcare services around the county or state; children go to schools across city and state boundaries, and the list goes on. Here are just a few items that the Census will directly impact for the next ten years: Medicare Part B and Medicaid; Federal Pell Grant Program and Federal Direct Student Loans; Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten and Head Start; ESOL and Special Education programs; School Breakfast program; the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP); Crime Victim Assistance; Special Programs for the Aging Nutrition Services; Highway Planning and Construction; FEMA Emergency Management and Disaster Assistance Grants; Business and Industry Loans; CDBG Entitlement Grants; Heath Care Centers and more. Above I mentioned CDBG Grants. Residents in the City of Weston have directly benefitted from these grants. Since 2012, over $3 million has been awarded to individuals or families through our Down Payment Assistance Program, Home Repair Assistance and Barrier Free/Special Needs Assistance programs, all provided through federal grant money. The City has received $3.4 million in grant funding directly tied to Census numbers for stormwater improvements, CERT program establishment, bus shelters, law enforcement programming, LED streetlights and a roundabout construction. A complete and accurate count is the bedrock of our democracy. The census not only determines representation at every level of government, it shapes how leaders will allocate funds, services, investments and more. The census determines the dispersal of nearly $1.5 trillion in funding for programs large and small – from Medicaid and school lunch to highway construction and public education, each year for the next ten years. For city, county and state governments, the count has an immense effect on the size and distribution of annual budgets. There is perhaps no other government activity that has a greater and more direct impact on cities and local communities than the census. Each household will receive a letter in the mail this month to respond to Census 2020. It is safe, simple and secure. Be sure to count EVERYONE staying in your home from age 1 day old to 101 and beyond. It will impact us for the next ten years. We have to get this right – we have one shot each decade. Please be counted. If you have any questions about who should be counted or how, please visit our census 2020 website WestonFL.org/Census 2020 or call 954-385-2000.

equesta Trace Park transformed into a winter wonderland for the annual Weston Winter Safety Expo, featuring an impressive fleet of law enforcement and military vehicles, ice skating and “snow” flurries. With more than 3,000 people in attendance, BSO Sergeant Michele McCardle, of the Weston Crime Prevention Unit, says the 2020 Winter Safety Expo was a huge success. “This
year’s Winter Safety Expo attracted the largest crowd Weston has seen in years! Our federal, state and local law enforcement and fire departments made learning about public safety fun and exciting for all those who came out to see us that evening.” Presented by the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the Winter Safety Expo promotes public safety with multiple law enforcement agencies, fire rescue and EMS personnel and governmental entities showcasing their vehicles and emergency equipment, in addition to informational booths on Census 2020 and by local health and safety

organizations including the Weston YMCA’s water safety team. BSO was out in full force with its Marine Unit, K9 Unit, Crime Scene Investigators, Bomb Squad, SWAT Team, Drone Unit, Motorcycle Unit and Fire Rescue crew in attendance and opening their vehicles for children to explore. The BSO Aviation Unit did a flyover, and there were several helicopters on site including the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and
Border Patrol, and Miami Dade Police Department. Other interesting exhibitors included the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), and Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC). As cool as it was to meet the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect us, the highlight of the night for most of the children in attendance was playing in the “snow”, which was actually soap flakes. The Florida-style ice skating was another popular activity, along with bounce houses, dancing, games and much more.

Mayors’ Chess Challenge Supports Scholastic Chess BY STACEY BOMSER

t was checkmate for the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. The City of Weston hosted the event, welcoming approximately 150 players of all ages and skill levels for an afternoon of scholastic chess. Annalisa Walker, Weston’s Director of Special Events, says the program drew a diverse group of chess players, ranging in age from five to over 65
years. “We even had someone who was celebrating his birthday and wanted to include the Mayors’ Chess Challenge as part of his day.” The Mayors’ Chess Challenge was created by Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan to promote scholastic chess and its academic benefits. It has grown over the years to now include more than 20 municipalities throughout Broward County, as well as Boca Raton and Miami Beach. One or more cities host the event each month during the school year. The City of Weston has always been a big supporter. Mayor Daniel Stermer and Commissioners Byron Jaffe and Mary Molina-Macfie were in attendance, with the mayor stepping up to the challenge and taking on a few young players. Walker says BSO Weston District Fire Chief Todd Draizin and Parks and Recreation Director Kara Petty participated in match play, along with additional staff from BSO. Of course, the purpose of the Mayors’ Chess Challenge is to promote and support the importance of scholastic chess and Weston elementary school students eagerly sat down to show off their skills while making new friends. “All of Weston’s schools support the scholastic chess initiative,” notes Walker, pointing out that while the Mayor’s Chess Challenge may be over in Weston, children can participate in Chess Club

Protecting Vision from the Effects of Glaucoma BY DR. JANE THERRIEN
G
laucoma affects 2.7 million people in the United States and is the second leading cause of blindness yet understanding and awareness of the disease is low. In fact, 72 percent of Americans don’t know that glaucoma typically has no early warning signs or symptoms, according to the American Optometric Association’s 2014 American Eye-Q® consumer survey. Often referred to as the “sneak thief of sight,” glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that can damage the optic nerve and impair peripheral vision. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to complete loss of sight. While the disease does not have a cure and is not preventable, it is treatable and can be detected in a comprehensive eye exam provided by your optometrist. A common misconception is that glaucoma only affects older adults when, in reality, it can happen at any age. In fact, it’s most commonly detected in people in their 40s. The key is to identify and diagnose the disease early in order to promptly treat and slow the progression of vision loss. Americans are also largely unaware of the factors that put them at greater risk for developing glaucoma. Only 13 percent of Americans know that a per-
son’s race increases their chances for developing the disease. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, glaucoma is six to eight times more common in African Americans than Caucasians. Additional factors that put someone at greater risk for glaucoma include those who have a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, hypothyroidism, are over age 60, or individuals who have had severe eye trauma. Treatment for glaucoma includes prescription eye drops and medication to lower pressure in the eyes. In some cases, laser treatment or surgery may be effective in reducing pressure. In addition to yearly, comprehensive eye exams, the following tips will help you maintain overall eye health and clear, comfortable vision: ▸ Eat green, leafy vegetables and foods rich in nutrients like beta carotene, vitamin C and zinc to protect eyes from disease. ▸ Cut down on bad habits such as smoking and consuming alcohol or excessive caffeine, which can all be harmful to the eyes. ▸ If you work in front of a computer, practice the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break and look at something 20 feet away to help avoid digital eye strain. ▸ Wear sunglasses with UV-A and UV-B protection year-round. To make an appointment for a comprehensive eye exam and to learn more about ways to help prevent vision loss from glaucoma contact Dr. Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare at 954-888-9393. The office is at 4472 Weston Road. Dr. Therrien and her staff look forward to exceeding your expectations.

Cheers to Weston Toastmasters’ 35th Anniversary BY STACEY BOMSER
F
or many people, the thought of public speaking makes their voice crack, hands tremble and the sweat start running. That’s often because those individuals lack the confidence and experience to comfortably address a group of people. For the past 35 years, the Weston Area Toastmasters Club has been providing Weston residents with the communication and leadership skills to become seasoned public speakers. Weston Area Toastmasters is part of Toastmasters International, a non-profit educational organization with more than 16,600 clubs in 143 countries. By following the Pathways Learning Experience, Toastmasters’ interactive and flexible education program, members develop the speech organization, vocal variety, language, gestures and persuasion skills needed to become strong, confident public speakers. “Our members are from different walks of life and background. We have professionals, entrepreneurs, veterans, and students,” shares Weston Area Toastmasters President Srimathi Srinivasan. “A typical member is either a professional or an entrepreneur who is looking to improve their communication and public speaking skills. These may be individuals whose primary language is not English, or their profession demands presentation and public speaking.” According to Srinivasan, the meetings are structured and include the following elements: prepared
speeches; impromptu speeches; evaluation of speeches; overall observation on grammar, use of filler words, and body language; and a Word of the Day. She says potential new members are welcome to attend a meeting as a guest and try an impromptu speech, but the prepared speeches are assigned to members and based on projects from the Pathways Learning Experience. Through Toastmasters, members improve communication and build leadership skills. “Toastmasters will give you the skills and confidence you need to effectively express yourself in any situation. You’ll improve your interpersonal communication and be

more persuasive and confident when giving speeches,” shares Srinivasan. “You will gain the practice to become the leader and speaker you want to be. You will also sharpen your management skills, become a better negotiator, gain trust and inspire your team.” There is a strong social component to Weston Area Toastmasters. In addition to its weekly meetings, which the club has dubbed “FundayMonday”, the club also celebrates holidays with special events such as a Christmas Pajama Party and Thanksgiving Potluck and hosts speech-a-thons and milestone celebrations. It is currently planning an “Under the Stars” gala to celebrate its 35th anniversary. Srinivasan says Weston Area Toastmasters owes its long-term success to its unique culture and membership. “We are a fun group of individuals committed to personal growth from diverse backgrounds and professions. You will meet a proud veteran who travelled with Robin Williams doing comedy shows, an actress and voice over artist, a very unique woman entrepreneur making robotics fun for kids, professionals from top companies, active moms, students with big dreams…the list is endless.” n The Weston Area Toastmasters Club was voted Best Community Organization in Best of Weston 2019. It meets Mondays from 7:30-9:15pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church. For more information visit https://westonarea.toastmastersclubs. org/ or follow them on Facebook.

Positively Disrupting Medicine by Using Innovative Solutions BY ALEX A. MAYER, MBA-HSA raditional medicine is progressively polarizing to over-specialization and rigidity that neglect treating patients as intelligent and sensitive partners. Increasingly, patients are looking to be heard attentively and to be closely involved in their healing process. This is not the case today since normally patients are extensively and unnecessarily tested at a very high cost and seldomly addressing root cause issues, resulting in symptomatic drug administration and dependency. For the past 18 years, Bellissimo Medical approached this conundrum differently, by listening to our patients’ concerns carefully and engaging their efforts to identify primal causes that lead to illness. We evaluate our patients in detail for common sense causes of ailments such as hormonal imbalance, nutrition, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients deficiencies, lifestyle stressors, toxic elements exposure, etc. Only then with the whole picture, we design a plan to start the healing process of body and mind, step by step, helping the miraculous human body’s ability to heal itself naturally. This works amazingly well, especially for the treatment and cure of devastating common chronic diseases.

This type of medicine is effective, fair, and more affordable, since it reduces dependency on expensive and toxic medicines, reduces the need for specialists and hospitals stays, as well as sick days and lost income. But more importantly, our patients quickly return to their normal enjoyable life. We are committed to this positive disruptive approach because we know it works since we have experienced a 90% rate of returning patients, as well as an increasing number of international patients and traditional medicine doctors showing up on our schedule. This is an effective undisputable trend that will continue growing in spite of all the regulatory and FDA roadblocks in our path, designed only to protect special interests.

leveland Clinic Weston is leading the way in treating patients with a rare form of cancer with its new multidisciplinary Sarcoma Program. Specialists in the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Center and the Maroone Cancer Center will collaborate to develop treatment plans designed to provide the best possible outcome and improve quality of life for patients with sarcoma. Sarcomas are cancers of the bone and soft tissue. They are extremely rare, with fewer than 200,000 cases diagnosed each year in this country. Sarcomas can be found anywhere in the upper or lower extremities and require special attention from initial diagnosis through treatment. “We are excited to launch this new program that brings together specialists who are experienced
in the care of complex, challenging tumors,” said Cleveland Clinic Weston President Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, MBA. “As a quaternary and tertiary care medical center, our highly specialized medical team is committed to working together to tailor treatment plans to meet each patient’s needs and goals.” In order to accomplish this, Cleveland Clinic Weston’s Sarcoma Program brings together orthopedic and general surgeons, medical oncologists, musculoskeletal radiologists, pathologists, and plastic surgeons who are experts in treating a variety of sarcomas. The program is headed by Jorge Manrique, MD, a specialist in musculoskeletal oncology as well as hip and knee replacement surgery. “We are pleased to offer patients with bone and soft tissue tumors the
opportunity to be treated with the latest technology and improve their quality of life,” said Dr. Manrique. “Patients tend to have better outcomes with they receive coordinated care at a center with highly trained specialists from different disciplines. We look forward to providing our patients with compassionate care in one convenient location.” In addition to treating patients with sarcoma, Cleveland Clinic Weston’s Sarcoma Program will also treat patients who have other forms of cancer that has metastasized to the bone. These patients require special attention to avoid fractures and reduce the impact of the disease. Cleveland Clinic Weston is part of the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Its Sarcoma Program is regarded as a national and international resource for the diagnosis

and treatment of adults and children with benign and malignant tumors of the bone and soft tissue. As one of the largest programs in the United States, Cleveland Clinic’s specialists treat hundreds of people with benign and malignant tumors each year. Its bone cancer specialists are credited with performing limb-sparing surgery, allowing 90 percent of its patients with bone cancer to avoid amputation with only a small chance of recurrence.

Growing Pains In Children Or Merely Flatfeet? BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
F
barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified, and the problem treated.
oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding

Families can choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Mid-week overnight prices won’t kill the budget either!

Everglades Elementary Debate Coach Pilar Villegas believes debate provides students with important academic and life skills. “It is important for young students to learn debate skills because it helps them put their thoughts into cohesive and powerful spoken messages to convince an audience. In addition, they learn to actively listen to others and present well-researched arguments in order to stand behind a particular point of view.” At the elementary level, students compete in four debate categories: Impromptu, Interpretation, Congressional Chamber and Original Oratory. Debate Team Coach Jessica Schneider says the students are busy preparing for their next tournament, which includes mock bills on school uniforms and raising the minimum wage. “Their first tournament featured

unit on matter provided the perfect opportunity for fifth grade students at Eagle Point Elementary School to engage in handson learning. Students watched in wonder as the chemical changes occurred. “Studies have shown that kinesthetic learning, where a student carries out physical activities rather than listening to a lecture, is the most popular type of learning with students,” explains fifth grade teacher Janet Gutarra. This is particularly true when it
comes to teaching science concepts. According to Ms. Gutarra, not only do firsthand inquiry-based opportunities make a greater impact on learning, the hands-on approach helps students build lasting critical thinking abilities. “When students are given the ability to learn in a practical hands-on environment, they are very often engaged, stimulated and want to learn as much as possible,” she shares. “The student’s appetite for learning increases and they are more willing to listen and pay attention if they have a more practical or life-like task to complete. Students also become more empowered in their own learning situation.” Science teacher Raquel Ferran utilized this concept during a unit on matter. She had students complete a variety of hands-on investigations to conceptualize chemical changes and changes in matter. For instance, students observed what happened when they combined
yeast, warm water and sugar. They measured and recorded temperatures and physical properties, then collaborated in small groups to provide evidence for how the matter changed chemically. Ms. Ferran later explained that this investigation is reproduced daily in the process of bread making. She believes science is a great way to bring real world connections into the classroom. Another investigation involved

watching the chemical change that occurs when combining baking soda and vinegar. The bubbling foamy reaction came as a surprise to many students. As part of the unit on matter students also identified the factors that speed up changes in matter, such as particle size, temperature and agitation. Kinesthetic learning can be used in other subjects as well. For example, in language arts students could be asked to act out a story. A math teacher may use manipulatives to help students comprehend addition and subtraction skills.

Manatee Bay Students Get a Taste for Reading at Genre Book Tea BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents at Manatee Bay Elementary School were able to sip and sample a variety of book genres at the Genre Book Tea. It was the culminating activity to the school’s Celebrate Literacy Week programs. Literacy Coach Monica Stokes says Celebrate Literacy Week allows school districts and families to engage in fun activities that bring the community together for the love of reading. The Genre Book Tea certainly accomplished that, with students and parents dressing in their finest tea party attire to browse various
genres of books. Mrs. Stokes says the concept was inspired by a new trend in education called “book tastings”, which
expose students to a variety of books to spark their interest in reading. “Since I have some experience with tea parties, I thought why not combine my experience and the genres to expose students to books they might not otherwise consider reading.” Because Manatee Bay is a Dual Language school, with select kindergarten through fifth grade classes learning in both English and Spanish, Mrs. Stokes included Spanish books in every genre represented. The Genre Tea Party took place during Literacy Night, but the entire week was filled with special themes to promote a love of reading. “On Mystery Monday, students dressed like spies and detectives with their favorite mystery book in hand. On Tale Tuesday, our school was lined with fairy tale characters. On Whimsical Wednesday, students brought in their favorite fantasy book dressed as

knights, queens and even dragons. Students represented their favorite non-fiction book on My Book/My Thing Thursday. Finally, on Friday, students read their favorite fiction story to flashlight. It was a great week!” states Mrs. Stokes. She says the children really got into the spirit of the celebration with some dressing in elaborate costumes. “We had a student represent Jack and the Beanstalk on Tale Tuesday. She was dressed as Jack and was accompanied by a tall paper tree. It was very cool. We also had Captain Underpants. He wore a long white t-shirt with the underwear inscribed on it. Super creative and very funny.” Mrs. Stokes says it is important to encourage young children to read. “Reading opens up a world of possibilities. It exposes students to places they may never visit, perspectives to consider, and the joy of creativity. By encouraging your children to read, you’re helping to ensure that they become limitless individuals.”

Experiences Are Better Than Things BY IVIS MATEOS id you know providing your child with life experiences is better than giving them things that they will get bored with after just a couple plays, break or even loose? Experiences are a part of their journey and will remain in their hearts and minds long after the moment is gone. As a mother of two beautiful young men, I can tell you that I have gone through many lost toys, worn-out name brand shoes and clothing items that have either shrunk or they have outgrown. I know I have spent too much dinero on items that are just temporary! On the other hand, every road trip, camping getaway, cruise or flight to discover new places we have taken has left a mark in my kids’ life. Even as time passes, the anecdotes of each experience that impacted them are spoken around the dinner table. Many life lessons were learned through the life experiences I have exposed them to. I remember when we took our trip across the ocean to a beautiful country called Morocco. At first the culture differences shocked my children. They couldn’t relate to the language or dress code or even the food, yet in conversing with locals and experiencing the culture firsthand, they understood that these people that looked totally different than we did, where still amazing! That their food was tasty and their language rich. They understand that looking different didn’t separate us from building relationships that would last a lifetime with people thousands of miles away. I remember the first camping trip we took as a family. Now this was traumatic for all of us because we realized how much we took air conditioning and warm baths for granted yet appreciated the silence and the beauty of the stars at night. Experiences will help your children appreciate family more. You are helping create strong family bonds and it will allow them to discover new things. Experience is a gift of knowledge and a tool that you provide your children to use and succeed in life.

Living Museum Brings History to Life at Imagine Charter School BY STACEY BOMSER
F
rom athletes and authors to political figures and princesses, students in Sondra Pestcoe’s second grade gifted/high achiever class at Imagine Charter School Weston got the chance to study some of the people who have shaped our world. It was all part of the Living Museum, with students learning about and then “becoming” their chosen famous person. After a lesson on famous figures, Ms. Pestcoe laid out a selection of Who Is…?/Who Was…? books. The students were able to select one of those people or suggest one of their own. The only stipulations were
that the famous person be well-known for accomplishing something significant and that there be a biography available on the person. The children’s choices ranged from comic book creator Stan Lee and anthropologist Jane Goodall to baseball legend Babe Ruth and Apple inventor Steve Jobs. The assignment consisted of reading the biography and writing a book report. Ms. Pestcoe says additional research was needed in order to create a poster for the Living Museum with pictures of the famous person along with a timeline illustrating their accomplishments and contributions. Students also made and brought props to decorate their desk and dressed up as their famous person. “Parents and administrators were invited to the Living Museum,” explains Ms. Pestcoe. “They rotated around the room listening to the students’ presentations which included information such as date and place of birth, childhood facts, what the person is known for, and other interesting facts about the person.” For many students, portraying their chosen figure was the best part of this project. According to Sasha, “My favorite part was when the parents came
in to listen to us talk about our person.” Classmate Sanvi shared, “My favorite part was decorating my desk and dressing up as Amelia Earhart.” Ms. Pestcoe says the parents were impressed by the Living Museum exhibits and students’ portrayals. “I loved the enthusiasm and excitement that my son and the other kids had while doing this project,” noted Marcelle Laronde. “It was very enjoyable to see how they were all able to express themselves and interpret these famous people through their own eyes.” Loicy Paul shared a similar sentiment about the Living Museum and its impact. “It was an interesting way of educating the kids about important people of the world who have impacted our lives.” Of course, playing dress up was also fun. “My daughter had a blast researching and learning about Malala. Every student did a great job and came up with surprising costume ideas,” said Janeth Naseer.

Tequesta Trace Middle School Launches Student Newspaper BY STACEY BOMSER
E
xtra! Extra! Read all about it in the Tequesta Trace Times. That’s the name of the monthly digital newspaper produced by students enrolled in the new Newspaper class at Tequesta Trace Middle School. The academic-based elective was introduced this year as an option for sixth graders. Melyssa Silva and Elizabeth Angelov teach the course, which has 125 students enrolled. Mrs. Silva says she would one day like to expand Newspaper into a multi-grade level course, with a Level 1 course for sixth graders focused on instruction and learning all that there is to know about journalism and a Level 2 course for seventh/ eighth grade students which would involve field journalism and reporting and the creation of the newspaper itself. “For now, this is working out great. The students are loving it and are having loads of fun,” she shares. “When students are having fun while they learn I feel that’s when it sinks in the most – and that’s what makes me happiest as a teacher.”
While there is no doubt the students are enjoying this class, Mrs. Silva says they are learning as well, and much more than just journalism skills. “I teach 7th grade Language Arts as well and I feel this course really helps students work on their writing and editing skills. It also promotes their speaking and listening skills as they venture out into the school community and speak with students and teachers.” Each month the aspiring journalists interview classmates, teachers, and coaches to write their articles. Mrs. Silva says they have reported on sporting events, field trips, band concerts, club activities, school events and much more. There are also standard features found in each edition such as “TTMS Teacher Feature”, in which a selected teacher answers questions and shares more about how and why they became a teacher, as well as movie reviews, student surveys, and a community calendar-type page announcing
upcoming events and programs at the school. The students write their own copy, which the teachers had been editing. However, Mrs. Silva says last month she began inviting Junior Honor Society members to serve as junior editors, providing feedback on things like spelling mistakes and typos. She has also started choosing a few Newspaper students who show a greater initiative in design to help her with the layout design process. “We spend all month attending events/functions, interviewing faculty and students, conducting surveys across campus, and then writing and editing,” explains Mrs. Silva. “At the end of each month, we produce a digital newspaper in PDF format which is sent to students, faculty and parents.” Tequesta Trace Times has been widely praised and Mrs. Silva says she is proud of the Newspaper students for taking on the challenge of starting a brand-new student newspaper.

Don’t fret about your colonoscopy, new prep is easier to swallow When your doctor says it’s time to schedule a colonoscopy, do you start thinking up excuses to put it off? You may be concerned about unpleasantness and inconvenience as you prepare for the exam. But it’s time to stop worrying – the prep process is much easier these days. Yes, one of the keys to a successful colonoscopy is the “clean-out” beforehand. But improvements – in the liquid you drink, the amount you must drink and the timing – make the whole process easier to swallow. Regular colonoscopies can save your life Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerrelated deaths among men and the third leading cause among women in the United States. Most patients who develop colon cancer have no obvious risk factors. “The colon, itself, is a risk factor,” says Tolga Erim, DO, Chairman of Gastoenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease Center.
Tolga Erim, DO
Bowel residue polyps are a precursor for cancer, and they can be overlooked if the colon lining is not clear of solid and liquid. “Many people fear drinking the laxative prep to cleanse the bowel more than the colonoscopy itself,” says Dr. Erim. But it’s a key part of the procedure. Three steps for a good prep: • Cut out fiber. Two days before the exam, start a low-fiber diet.
• Switch to clear liquids. The day before the procedure, consume only clear liquids. “It’s important to keep patients hydrated and flush the prep through the intestinal tract,” advises Dr. Erim. “The clear liquids aid in that process.” • Start the prep. Start the prep. Many physicians today prescribe a split-dose regimen, where half the prep is taken the night before and the other half in the morning. But, if the exam is in the afternoon, the prep is taken the morning of the colonoscopy. A better-tasting solution “The liquid bowel-cleansing agents now taste better and less of the liquid is consumed. This mean that the prep is, quite literally, easier to swallow,” explains Dr. Erim. Those two factors, combined with the split-dose approach, improves the experience for patients. Regular colonoscopies can detect colon cancer early on. It’s important to follow your physician’s screening recommendations. To schedule a colonoscopy today, call 800.639.DOCTOR.

The peer buddies were recognized at the Broward Public School District’s “Just Do It” award ceremony, which took place during Inclusive Schools Week. Ryan is a student in Joan Curtis’ Specialized Varying Exceptionalities (SVE) class. As his elective, Ryan attends Julie Sikorski’s Peer Counseling class, where he has been paired with Nicholas, who serves as his peer buddy (a general education student who assists the SVE student in class). “It was my goal to have Ryan interact with typical peers in order for him to learn how students his age socialize with each other,” explains Ms. Curtis. “My hope was that Ryan would learn from seeing how the Peer Counselors work in classes helping teachers and peers. Mrs. Sikorski paired Ryan with Nicholas as a role model.” Ms. Curtis says she could not be happier with the results of this newly formed friendship. “Ryan used to be a very shy young man who lacked self confidence and would not venture out of his comfort zone. He often would let opportunities go by because

he didn’t know what to expect and rather than try something new, he would just say that he didn’t want to do whatever it was. In the past year he has really grown in his willingness to do new things and have new experiences. He happily attends field trips and is much more accepting of change. He enjoys working with his peers and teachers at school.” The positive change was evident to Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Specialist Jessica Winter, who nominated the pair for the “Just Do It…We Did It Together” Award after seeing and hearing how well the two boys were getting along. When asked how he felt about receiving his award, Nicholas said, “I felt happy and surprised!” Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie personally congratulated all of the winners. He calls the “Just Do It” Awards an inspiring event. “It is a great moment for us to celebrate some of our amazing students and what they continue to accomplish.” School Board Member Heather Brinkworth says the “We Did It Together” Award, which Ryan and Nicholas received, is especially rewarding. “It’s an amazing recognition of students who work together to make great things happen.”
The “Just Do It” Awards Program is a Districtwide celebration recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of students with disabilities. Ryan was one of 113 Broward students to be honored for showing significant improvement or exemplary achievement. The program is presented by the Exceptional Student Learning Support Division and the Florida Inclusion Network.

Weston Musician Is Proving To Be True Triple Threat BY STACEY BOMSER

axx Nunn has been playing music his entire life. He jokes that his family cherishes a picture of him as a baby banging drumsticks on an aluminum garbage can and putting dents in it. Today, the Cypress Bay High School junior is developing quite a following as a bassist, singer and songwriter for Saving Herald, a local band made up of four high school students. Maxx is a versatile musician, playing center quad for the battery line in the Sound of Thunder marching band in addition to performing with Saving Herald. “I play mainly bass guitar these days, but I also play guitar, drums, piano, saxophone, and I enjoy singing and producing a little bit,” he notes. He is also a talented songwriter. With three songs to his credit, Maxx says what he likes best about songwriting “isn’t necessarily expressing myself through songs, but rather making a story with it that people are able to relate to.”
He acknowledges writers block is his biggest challenge. “Sometimes it’ll last months and there’s really nothing I can do about it.” When you look at the success of his songs, you would never guess he struggles with writer’s block. Lady in Waiting debuted in September. He wrote, composed and played piano and bass as well as sang back-up vocals. Maxx says it’s about wanting to be a part of something bigger than yourself. Many of his songs carry strong messages. “Breathe is about recognizing the signs of mental illness and being there for people when they can’t be there for themselves,” shares Maxx, adding that Your Roots is “just another angry political song.” You can hear Maxx’s original songs, along with Saving Herald’s feel-good alternative rock playlist, when the band plays at the WestonNights Outdoor Concert as opening act for The Shane Duncan Band. “I’m looking forward to
it a lot because I grew up in Weston and I know I’m gonna know a bunch of people who show up. Also, the Shane Duncan Band has been so great to us, it’s gonna be a blast playing a show with them.” This is not the band’s Weston debut. They have played at Wings of Weston a few times, as well as regularly at the nearby Wunderbar and Falcon Pub. Last year, as winners of Gibson Guitar’s Wave to Ripple competition, Saving Herald had the privilege of playing a set at Revolution Live. That set went so well, the band was invited back to play again a few months later. With one year of high school left, Maxx is already setting his sights on the future. “A dream of mine has always been to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. I want to pursue Studio Production and Songwriting.” Saving Herald will perform at 6pm on March 14th at the event stage in Weston Regional Park in the final concert of the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series.

he fifth annual Weston Town Center Food & Wine Festival takes place on Sunday, March 29th. It promises to be an enriching afternoon of sipping and sampling fine food, wine and spirits. As with all Town Center events, the Food & Wine Festival will be family-friendly, with children invited to partake in the tasty treats and also enjoy the fabulous entertainment and special kids’ corner. “The purpose of this event is to celebrate the variety of superb dining and vendors in Weston and its surrounding communities while providing a unique networking opportunity to its guests,” explains Weston Town Center Marketing and Event Coordinator Angie Paulson. “This event will help strengthen, expose and increase our diversity of culture, flavors and wines.” The Food & Wine Festival will be the toast of the town as patrons get the chance to sample a large selection of fine wines and champagnes. Paulson says vendors will also be serving spirits, such as tequila and whiskey, as well as beer. Foodies will relish the opportunity to sample fare from more than 30 restaurants featuring everything from steak to sushi and everything in between, including international cuisine representing Italy, China, Peru, Mexico and more. In between the bites and beverages, patrons can gather around the central stage. It will feature live music and entertainment throughout the afternoon, including a Cirquestyle acrobatic performance and mixology demonstrations. There will also be a photo booth to capture memories of this fun-filled day. Children will delight in the complimentary choo-choo train rides and balloon sculptures. The Housing Shortage Is A Reality BY PHYLLIS SCARBERRY here is a shortage of homes for sale all over the United States. Price appreciation is accelerating. First-time buyers are taking longer to purchase a home. Boomers are staying put. No one wants to be “stuck.” Even with the shortage, there are options. Unknown to many, qualifying seniors over the age 62 could purchase their dream home with a reverse mortgage (the HECM Program). In 2008, the FHA enacted legislation in response to the housing market crash allowing seniors to use a reverse mortgage to purchase a home. Some homeowners are choosing to sell, grab their equity, and purchase a home above the tri-county area. Sellers relocating within Florida should brush up on how portability could save them money in taxes. For instance, a friend of mine moved from Weston to Tampa only to return to Weston. Before she returned, portability had been put into place by the state. She was able to save $1000 in taxes per year – nothing to sneeze at! What’s the major reason for this lack of housing inventory? Robert Dietz, Chief Economist for the National Home Builders Association, explained: “Home building in the 2010s was a story of the Long Recovery. After the Great Recession, the number of home builders declined significantly, and housing production was unable to meet buyer demand…Years of population and household formation growth, combined with relatively reduced levels of home building, have left the market with a critical supply shortage.” How does Weston’s housing shortage stack up? Today, the Multiple Listing Service shows: Of the 278 active single-family homes, the minimum list price is $385,000 and the maximum is $7.7 Million. The average home for sale is listed at $270.65 per square foot and is listed at $962,994. The median priced single-family home in Weston is priced around $697,000 -- about $257.59 per square foot. The median priced home would be a five-bedroom, three-bath residence. Other than high-end luxury homes, there is no new construction in these price ranges in Weston. What is Weston’s track record? The average price per square foot for sold singlefamily homes in Weston is $246, while the average home sold was around $705,000. Homes are selling within 89% of their originally listed price and are on the market about 75 days. In all price ranges, there is only 4.4 months of inventory – which is extremely low. The highest months of inventory occurred back in January of 2019 with 7.9 months – still indicative of a seller’s market. Homes placed under contract are up 11.4% compared to last year which is an indicator of our market’s further recovery. Florida is now the #1 state for growth in the United States. With little land to build single-family homes and more and more folks coming to Florida, is it any wonder we are in a single-family inventory crunch? Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seller upsizing or downsizing, 2020 could be your best year to make a change.

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
The Santana Group Reinvents the Residential Real Estate Experience BY STACEY BOMSER
W
e live in a digital world. Technology has impacted the way we do everything, and that includes buying and selling homes. By embracing worldwide internet marketing and social media, The Santana Group is reinventing the residential real estate experience. Under the leadership of Founder Teresa Santana, it is quickly rising to the top of the residential real estate market. Teresa shares more about why The Santana Group is one of the top real estate teams in Weston and how she and her associates can help if you are looking to buy or sell. What is The Santana Group? We are a team of nine real estate professionals, of various backgrounds and diversity, offering decades of combined experience selling real estate in Weston and surrounding areas. We are taking the industry in a new direction by providing better service, tools and programs. How are you able to do that? We are part of Compass, the country’s largest independent real estate brokerage. Compass is building the first modern real estate platform, pairing the industry’s top talent with technology to make the buying and selling of homes intelligent and seamless. This is the future of real estate. Please explain how technology is playing a role in real estate. The latest technological advances have empowered buyers and sellers with information necessary to make sound decisions and assist in the purchasing/selling process. Information that was once only available to realtors is currently available to everyone. This is why realtors have to bring a higher level of professionalism, integrity and service in order to earn the business of that educated consumer. The typical buyer in this era is utilizing the latest and greatest real estate apps provided by their
Realtor. Many home buyers are millennials, who are all about technology and paperless tools. Our team is equipped with these tools to service the client effectively. How are you using technology to sell homes? We provide a comprehensive digital marketing strategy to sell your home. Our approach includes targeted Facebook advertising, email marketing, content marketing, and personalized one-to-one outreach to reach the right buyer. We have an entire team with an extensive database of buyers contacting us to assist in their home search. It’s a matter of pairing the right buyer with the right home. Because we are so active on Zillow and the internet, we have first contact with the buyers . Please explain why marketing is so critical when selling a home. Image is everything. We’ll create a beautiful webpage to feature your home in a way that makes it stand out from the crowd. We will tell a story about your listing through a series of targeted email blasts, sent to a carefully chosen audience. We will further engage buyers through social media outlets. We’ll advertise your home on Facebook to reach 10,000+ people and be sure to highlight your home’s best features. We use Instagram to “build a buzz” around your home and connect with the community—ensuring a long list of buyers are ready to view your home as soon as it hits the market. And finally, we utilize video marketing with our own YouTube channel. Our videos range from home property tours to community spotlights, and more, all designed to build a following of home buyers and sellers in our community that we love. What other forms of marketing do you use? We offer worldwide internet marketing, print publications, open houses, and Brokers’ openings, to name a few. As part of Compass, what can you offer clients that other brokerages can’t? With Compass Concierge we offer our clients an interest free equity line of credit for staging, repairs and/or home updates which doesn’t have to paid until the house is sold. Compass Bridge Loan is an interest free loan to allow sellers to move to their next home before selling their existing property. Compass offers up to six months payment free loan. These two products are new in the real estate market and facilitate the seller in preparing his home to sell for top dollar. What distinguishes The Santana Group from other real estate groups?
The Santana Group Founder and Team Leader Teresa Santana and Operations Manager Armando Santana
Where should I begin? Currently, we offer more than any other real estate team in the local market. Not only are we one of the top real estate teams in Weston, we are the only bilingual team in that list. Our excellent service and professionalism have earned us various awards, but the most important to us is the 5-star rating that all our clients bestow upon us in Zillow. In addition, when you add in the Compass products such as the concierge and bridge loan, which no other Broker offers at this time, it’s plain to see that we offer the most advanced and diversified products and services available today. What advice do you have for clients? Not all realtors are the same. Research the person that is going to sell your home to find out if he/she is the best fit for you. Look for past performance and proven results. At minimum, a top realtor should provide professional photography, social media marketing, and advertising in the top real estate search engines such as Zillow and Trulia. Anything else you would like to add? Relationships matter. We pride ourselves on delivering amazing service to our customers. Our experience, knowledge, and communication skills allow us to provide a level of service that is unmatched in our industry.

embers of the Rotary Club of Weston and title sponsor Freedland Harwin Valori are excited about the upcoming 33rd Annual FHVLegal.com Golf Classic benefiting the club’s scholarship fund. This fun day of golf and fellowship will take place Friday, April 17, at The Club at Weston Hills. The prestigious tournament sells out quickly, so golfers should act now to secure a spot to play the magnificent Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed course with friends and area business and civic leaders. Because of this Weston Hills tournament’s popularity, both the Tour Course and the Players Course will be utilized. In addition to green fees and course play, the day includes complimentary breakfast, shirts and merchandise, on-course beverages, games, foursome photos, raffles, prizes, an awards banquet with open bar and a rousing good time for a good cause. “Thanks to the support of our many generous sponsors, golfers, Rotarians and community leaders, the Rotary Club of Weston has awarded over $1.5 million in scholarships over the years,” says Andy Suarez, Weston Rotary’s 2020 Golf Tournament Chair. “Exceptional seniors from Sagemont School, Cypress Bay and Western High Schools, and the

BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK ensus 2020 is here. This important process comes around every ten years, and it helps with things like ensuring a region has adequate representation in Congress, adequate school funding, and is cited in scientific research and social surveys. However, the census is also time-consuming and can feel really invasive with questions that might not seem to be anyone’s business. What is your household income? How many cars do you own? How many children do you have and how old are they? That also opens it up to potential scam abuse. Increase in Government Imposter Scams There is every reason to suspect that scammers will take advantage of the publicity surrounding the 2020 census in order to steal your information as part of a census scam. They may even threaten you with jail time if you do not immediately pay a fine since it is technically a crime to not fill out the census. Here are some things to remember that will hopefully help you spot census scams: ▸ The official website: The website for the Census Bureau is census.gov, and the specific website for the 2020 census is 2020census.gov. However, a scammer could easily buy the domain for 2020census.com or spoof their email by swapping a capital O for one of the zeros in the number. Remember, caller ID and email domain names are not proof that the person is legitimate. ▸ TheyPuzzleJunction.com will not call you: If the Census Bureau tried to call every U.S. household and take their census data over the phone, we would be ready for the 2030 census before they were finished. They will not call you and request your information, no matter what your caller ID says. They will also not email you a link to complete it online, so never click a link in an email unless you are expecting it. If you get a call, it is a census scam. ▸ They might come to your house, but will not request anything: In some areas, government volunteers serving as census takers will knock on doors. However, they will not request Social Security numbers, bank or credit card numbers or any other payment information. They will also not ask for payments for their time or for the postage on your forms, no matter what the person claims. ▸ The police are not coming to your house: Regardless of what the person on the phone says, the police are not being sent to your house for failure to fill out the census. Yes, it is required under the law and it is vitally important for a variety of reasons, but the police are very busy. The caller who claims you can simply pay some kind of fine over the phone, especially with prepaid debit cards or iTunes gift cards, is lying to you. It is a census scam. I always explain that how much a case ends up costing is directly linked to how long it takes to resolve their case. While most family cases deal with similar issues— division of assets, financial support for a spouse (alimony)and/or child support and the accompanying parenting plan addressing timesharing—not all families have the same dynamic. That difference in family dynamic is what can cause one case to reach a resolution in a short period of time with little exposure to litigation, and another case to drag on for what feels like an eternity, which often results in court intervention. Naturally, the more time a case is pending, the more likely it is that it is financially costing the client.

This is why when an attorney first meets with a client, there is no way for the attorney to predict what the true dynamic of the case is, nor how it will play out in the arena of traditional litigation. It is for that reason that most attorneys do not charge a flat fee in traditional litigation—because of the unknown and unpredictability that lies ahead. However, in the Collaborative Process the concept of attorney’s fees can be different than in traditional litigation. Not only because the Collaborative Process promotes a more peaceful and amicable alternative to litigation; but also, because it provides parameters that promote more predictable timeframes and makes way for a more efficient resolution of a case. This predictability affords attorneys practicing in this area of family law the opportunity to offer their clients a flat fee option. The flat fee offered will often depend on various factors, such as the complexity of the case which takes into account aspects such as: the length of the marriage, the need for financial support between the parties, the level of assets/ liabilities in existence, and whether there are minor children requiring matters such as timesharing and child support to be addressed. Ultimately, clients appreciate this option when it is available because it allows them to know not only that there is a light at the end of the tunnel but also where the end of the tunnel is located. If you or anyone you know is interested in the Collaborative Process and the flat fee option, reach out to our office and we can further assist you. n The law firm of Evan H. Timing of Tooth Eruption BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN
O
ne of the most common anxieties parents share with us concerns the timing of the eruption of teeth. We are often asked: “When are the first teeth scheduled to enter the mouth?” or “Which is ‘better,’ late vs. early erupting teeth?” The truth of the matter is that although there are published milestones, there is still a normal variation/range that teeth may be expected to erupt. In terms of which is better, there is no real benefit for early or late eruption. However, extreme deviations may cause a practical challenge as
we will discuss. Let’s start with the primary (or “baby”) teeth. The first primary tooth to erupt is usually the lower central incisor between 5-8 months of age. The teeth will then follow the “rule of twos,” which is that two additional teeth will erupt every two months until around 2-2.5 yrs old. There is a total of 20 primary teeth equally divided between upper and lower arches. After the eruption of the lower central incisors, we will see the eruption of the upper central incisors, the lower lateral incisors (as the name suggests, next to the central incisors) followed by the upper lateral incisors. The pattern will continue from center laterally with the lower erupting earlier than the upper counterparts. Premature eruption of primary teeth occurs in 1:2000. This can occur in two ways. “Natal” teeth are present at birth and “prenatal” teeth erupt in the first 30 days of life. When teeth erupt prematurely, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider (pediatrician or pediatric dentist) as strategies for feeding will need to be addressed, especially if breastfeeding is planned. There are also structures which are present at birth which resemble premature teeth, but are actually not the primary teeth. One of the most common examples of this is “Epstein pearls.” They are visible cysts located in the upper arch in the front close to where the primary teeth are expected to be positioned. There is no treatment recommended for this as long as there is no interference with feeding and no observed discomfort for the child. As with all published milestones, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these are just averages and that “normal” has a range. We find variation in gender, with females being ahead of males. It is also important to note that deviations in one area may have no bearing on others. For example, there are many children who are either “ahead” or “behind” in dental development, but are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in skeletal growth. They do, however, give us an idea of what to plan for and some guidance on timing of interventional treatment, whether dental or orthodontic, when indicated. The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. TEE TO GREEN
The Best Way To Properly Hit Your Woods From The Fairway BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL o lower your score, you must have confidence in your fairway woods. Most courses have four Par 5’s, with 500-plus yards being the average distance. Therefore, the second shot is simply to get closer to the green and in position to hit a short iron on the green. With the second shot usually being over 200 yards, the go-to club for the average golfer will be their fairway wood. Like all clubs, confidence and expertise in use only comes from practice. Here are a few tips to improve ball strikes with the fairway woods.
T
Use Correct Ball Position Ball position is critical when hitting fairway woods. The ball should be approximately three inches inside your left heel. Stated another way, the ball should be placed about halfway between the driver position and the middle of your stance. When considering the swing arc, the slightly forward ball position allows the club head to strike the ball at the bottom of the arc. The descending angle of the fairway wood will strike the ball then take a shallow divot indicating a proper ball strike. Take a Shallow Divot Taking a shallow divot is indication that the club head was traveling downward toward the ball before impact. The divot should be shallow, not as deep as striking the ball with an iron. In addition to revealing the club head was in a downward arc prior to the ball strike, the divot also reveals the body was traveling forward at and after the strike. Pure fairway wood shots are executed when the weight is on the front foot prior to the ball strike.
Don’t Hang Back As with all ball strikes, weight must be on the front foot prior to impact. Shifting weight forward when hitting a fairway wood is a little more difficult. Since the fairway woods are longer clubs and the swing is flatter, the tendency is to help the ball get up by slightly lifting the club. Trying to lift the ball is a mistake and usually results in topping the ball and dribbling it down the fairway. Getting to the front foot prior to the strike will enable you to hit down with the fairway wood allowing the loft built into the club to project the ball up and forward as designed. Pose for a Picture Occasionally we need a little assistance with our swing. Sometimes the use of your imagination can correct or at least improve the swing flaw. I teach my students to imagine they are posing for an ad for a belt buckle and the photographer needs the buckle front and center. You need to finish your swing with your belt buckle facing the target and then hold that finish to pose for the picture. By having this image in your head, you will get through the ball and have the proper weight transfer needed. Many golfers who do not shift their weight properly are not even aware that is why they cannot strike the ball solidly. Do Your Eyes Make You Look Tired? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep, because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts,” also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Removing this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes. The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch”, no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty. PET CARE
Urinalysis and Early Kidney Disease Detection BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM idney disease is a broad term meaning that the kidneys are not functioning properly. Acute kidney disease occurs quickly, often over the course of a few days, and is caused by a lack of oxygen to the kidneys or exposure to toxins such as antifreeze, pesticides, and some medications. If treated promptly, acute kidney disease may be reversible. Chronic kidney disease occurs over the course of months to years and is usually progressive, meaning that it worsens over time. Early detection and treatment of chronic renal disease can slow the progression of the disease and help keep your pet more comfortable. What Are the Signs of Kidney Disease? Pets with kidney disease may display any or all of the following signs: increased drinking, increased urination, anorexia and weight loss, vomiting, lethargy, constipation or diarrhea. How Can Kidney Disease Be Detected Early? When the kidneys begin to fail, they lose their ability to concentrate urine. Urine that was once deep yellow in color becomes dilute (more clear in appearance). While the difference in concentration isn’t always obvious to the naked eye, it can be detected by a urinalysis. However, you may notice that your pet is drinking more water, urinating more frequently, and urinating in inappropriate places. What Is a Urinalysis? As the name implies, a urinalysis is the analysis of a pet’s urine. While a urinalysis is generally performed to evaluate the health of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, it can also provide information about the state of organs such as the liver and the pancreas. How Is a Urinalysis Performed? Ideally, a urine sample should be obtained by cystocentesis—a relatively painless procedure in which a needle is placed through the abdominal wall directly into the urinary bladder. A urine sample obtained in this manner is not contaminated by bacteria in the lower urinary tract. Urine samples can also be retrieved by placing a catheter (rubber tube) up the urinary tract into the bladder, but this procedure often requires anesthesia and may be difficult to perform on female pets. During a urinalysis, the technician will first evaluate the urine color and clarity or cloudiness. The urine is then assessed for specific gravity, which measures the ability of the kidneys to concentrate urine. Insufficient ability to concentrate urine is noted by an abnormal specific gravity and is often one of the first signs of early kidney disease. The urine is then applied to a treated dipstick that changes color to identify the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of the urine and the presence of several substances, such as protein, glucose, red blood cells, and white blood cells. For example, the presence of glucose in the urine often indicates diabetes. Protein in the urine may be a sign of kidney damage. What Are the Benefits of Kidney Function Testing? Kidney function testing can identify acute kidney disease so that proper treatment may potentially reverse the condition. While early detection of chronic kidney failure can’t stop the progression of the disease, treatment can help slow the process and help make your pet more comfortable. For example, a low-protein diet has been shown to help slow kidney disease progression.

Providing for Minor Children BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE re you a parent with minor children? If you are, your days are busy and your life is full. Probably the last thing you want to imagine is the possibility that someday you may leave for work in the morning, and not return. Who will take care of your children if something happens to you? Have you ever thought about a will or trust? Perhaps that’s something you’d consider when you’re older. You’re young, healthy, and, of course, you plan to be around for a long time: to see your children finish college, to walk your daughter down the aisle, to grow old with your spouse or partner and to play with your grandchildren. But we are reminded on a daily basis that life doesn’t always go as planned. I am often reminded of one of my favorite John Lennon lyrics, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” from his song, “Beautiful Boy.” The song was written for his young son, Sean. And, in the same year, the song was released, tragedy struck. Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York apartment. Life doesn’t always go as planned. As an estate planning attorney, I frequently see the sad consequences of a family facing an unexpected death, made even more difficult when minor children are involved. Does having an estate plan lessen the pain of an expected loss? Of course not. But it does take some of the burden off surviving family members: difficult decisions have already been made, priorities set, helpers designated.

954.885.0085 An important component of a parent’s estate plan is addressing issues regarding the upbringing of your children. What happens if both parents die simultaneously, or within a short duration of time? A contingency plan should identify the persons you’d like to manage your assets, as well as the guardian you’d nominate to finish raising your children. In many instances, you may purposely designate different persons to deal with your money and your children so as to maintain a system of checks and balances. You don’t want the probate court deciding who will manage your finances or to guess whom you’d prefer to raise your children. Other issues to consider are whether you’d like your heirs to receive an inheritance directly, or whether you’d prefer to have the assets placed in trust. Funds from a trust can be distributed based on a number of factors that you designate such as age, need, and/or even incentives based on behavior and education. All too often, children receive substantial assets before they are mature enough to handle them properly, with devastating results. Most importantly, give careful thought to your choice of guardian, ensuring that he or she shares the values you want to be instilled in your children. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law.
