Imagination Is More Important Than Ever

I

n a 1929 interview with The Saturday Evening Post, Albert Einstein famously quipped, “I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” It is worth noting that someone universally regarded for his scientific knowledge and intelligence had a higher regard for his own imagination than knowledge. Parents in modern America should heed these words today, more than ever. State school rankings, the proliferation of standardized tests, competition to attend selective universities, and peer pressure have combined to create a cauldron of stress for students today. Academic achievement and high scores on SATs, AP tests, and state assessments are often priorities for parents. While high achievement is important, developing and encouraging a child’s creativity and imagination are likely even more vital to their future success. This month’s issue of Our City includes Our City’s 2022 Summer Camp Guide. Summer Camp is an ideal place for kids to explore their creative side. Away from the stresses of the academic year, they are free to pursue things that they are passionate about. Whether your child is an aspiring astronaut, a sports nut, or loves making rope bracelets there is a summer activity for them. Be sure to check it out today. Remember, in the words of Maya Angelou, “you can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” Sincerely,

FEATURE STORY

A Shade Above Makes Selecting Window Coverings Easy A

Andrew Abramson, President

Shade Above Window Fashions provides a unique experience for consumers shopping for window coverings. Their interactive showrooms feature more than 100 different shades and blinds. Andrew Abramson, president of A Shade Above Window Fashions, and his family have been in the window covering industry for more than 50 years. He recently answered some questions about his business and what differentiates it from the competition.

Please describe your showrooms.

If you’re in the market for shades or blinds, shopping in one of our showrooms is an experience. When my father, Bruce, started A Shade Above in 1984, he had a vision of a showroom-based shades and blinds company where customers could see full size, interactive displays of all the latest products on the market. In 2000, our Davie showroom was selected as the nation’s first Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Gallery. In 2020 we opened a second showroom in Sunrise near the Sawgrass Mills Mall to better serve our expanding customer base. We’ve treated windows in thousands of Weston homes, and our new showroom is conveniently located for Weston shoppers. Our Davie showroom is also available for

Weston residents. Both of our state-of-the-art showrooms offer a wide variety of indoor and outdoor shades and blinds from top national and international brands. We have products to fit all budgets.

What products do you offer?

We provide many of the top products on the market, including plantation shutters, roller and patio shades, roman shades, horizontal and vertical blinds, automated awnings and patio screens, Luminette, Silhouette, Pirouette and PowerView and Somfy automation.

What products are currently trending in the window covering industry?

Plantation shutters remain one of our most popular products. They are a timeless window treatment that is always in style. If you’re looking for a decorative statement, plantation shutters provide trim work around your window, including a new contemporary frame. Depending on which shutter you choose, they can complement any decor.

What other trends can customers spot in your showrooms?

Motorized and automated shades are exploding in popularity, and we can automate almost any shade or blind in our showroom. Customers love motorized roller and transitional zebra shades on windows and sliding glass doors. Even wood binds and plantation shutters can be automated. The addition of a smart hub allows you to control your shades by voice assistant or set them to automatically open, close and tilt at your preferred time of day.

Do you carry room darkening products?

We’re always adding to our collection of blackout shades and we have interactive displays that show different degrees of darkness. We offer stylish shades that provide nearly total blackout in bedrooms and media rooms. One of our most popular products is our Duo Shades — during the day a transparent shade gives you a view of the outside while maintaining privacy and keeping out the heat. At night the blackout shade keeps the room private while maintaining darkness when the sun rises. 20 20 // Our Our City City Weston Weston // October April 2022 2021 / OurCityMedia.com / OurCityMedia.com

Duo Roller Shades

Sunrise, FL Showroom

What’s available for patios and other outdoor spaces?

Our patio shades allow you to relax on your patio without melting in the sun. These shades can be operated manually with a cable guide for wind resistance, or the shades can be motorized in a track. We also have retractable patio screens that protect you from bugs on muggy days but allow you to raise the screens when you want open air. For the ultimate in coverage, we have fashionable European style automated awnings that automatically retract on a windy day.

With so many choices, how do you help customers make a decision?

When customers visit our showrooms, they receive a tour of the newest shades and blinds available today. We recognize that it can be difficult to make decisions from small samples. That’s why our business model is special. Our full-size displays are available for the customer to view and operate as it will appear in their home. Our employees have decades of experience in the window covering industry, so they can answer personalized questions that will help customers make the best decisions tailored to their needs.

What’s the best way for customers to contact you?

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Common Probate Myths By Bruce Iden, Esquire

T

here are commonly held misconceptions about avoiding probate which may lead to uninformed decisions resulting in the need to open a probate administration. While the best way to avoid probate is to speak with an experienced estate planning attorney, let’s debunk a few probate myths.

I’ll leave my home to my children through a will to avoid probate. This is the most common of all estate planning

myths! Inherited property cannot be retitled or sold without approval of the court, which requires opening a probate administration for the deceased. There are, however, ways to avoid this including the creation of a new deed where your property eventually passes to your heirs or retitling your home to your trust. (An estate planning attorney can help determine the best option.)

Adding my adult child to my deed is a great way to avoid probate. While your property will indeed pass without

probate after you die, there is much risk when adding someone to your deed. The child’s interest in the home is not shielded from creditors via Homestead protection if it is not their primary residence. Your child’s creditors can place a lien against your property. A fractional interest in the property owned by a person who does not reside there does not qualify for Homestead tax benefits, so your property taxes will increase. And as your child is listed as an owner, they must sign off on any decision to sell or refinance the property.

Can I obtain the necessary forms and submit them to the probate court myself without the expense of an attorney? In Florida, almost all probate cases require an attor-

ney. There is a narrow exception for very small estates where the amount of assets is only sufficient to pay for the funeral and final expenses of the decedent.

My cousin’s estate was settled in just a few months in Michigan, so I’m expecting the same experience in south Florida. Probate for most simple estates can be settled within

a year, however, because of staffing shortages and backlogs in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the process can take as long as 18 months. More complex estates may take several years to settle.

I created a revocable living trust to avoid probate. A revocable living trust can help you avoid probate, but only if your trust is fully funded. With some important exceptions, all of your real property, personal property, cash and investment accounts, and business interests should be transferred into your trust while you are alive. If your trust is not properly funded, many assets may still have to go through probate after your death before reaching your trust and its beneficiaries.

Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

By Terry Jaillet

he American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life invites everyone in the community to attend the annual Relay survivor and caregiver celebration on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Cooper City High School. Relay For Life is a movement, a community of like-minded survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and participants who believe that the future can be free from cancer. It continues to be the largest peerto-peer fundraising event, with 2.5 million participants globally uniting to save lives from cancer. At Relay For Life events, no one faces cancer alone. We come together every year at more than 2,500 Relay events around the country to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers. Each Relay has special events and activities (many throughout the year) just for survivors and their caregivers, so

they can connect with others and know there is a strong support system available to them. This year’s fundraising goal for the “Broward Power” relay is $100,000. Funds are used to support research, fund education programs, and provide services to people suffering from cancer and their families. The American Cancer Societ y’s mission matters more than ever. The needs of people facing cancer continue and so does our work. Cancer patients still need support during this crisis. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society to continue

with cancer research, the 24/7 helpline, and for continuing services to get patients the care and support they need where we can.

Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital Ranked Highest in South Florida, Continues Expansion Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston Hospital was ranked highest among hospitals in South Florida in Newsweek magazine’s World’s Best Hospitals 2022 analysis. The ranking comes as the medical campus continues to expand in size, staff and services, offering patients increased access to the best in patient care in the region. The ranking also places the Weston Hospital as the 45th best hospital in the nation among a group of more than 400. The analysis results were published on March 2nd. “The Newsweek ranking is a testament to the dedication, and commitment of all our caregivers, who have persevered, in spite of two difficult years during a global pandemic,” said Conor Delaney MD, PhD, CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic’s Florida region. “Despite the challenges we have faced, our caregivers have continued to provide our patients with the very best care.” In addition to the Newsweek accolade, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Weston Hospital’s Gastroenterology and GI Surgery Program among the best in the nation and highest in Florida in its annual ranking of Best Hospitals for 2021-2022. Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, MBA, President of Cleveland Clinic’s Weston Hospital added, “It is always an honor to be recognized by our peers for the work that we do. I am proud of our caregivers and the incredible outcomes they achieve for our patients every day.” Despite the pandemic, hospital officials have pressed forward with an ambitious plan to expand and efforts are underway to add additional beds, specialty services and more physicians. “We are currently focusing on campus expansion and adding new services to accommodate the growing number of patients we serve,” says Dr. Blandon. “All of these initiatives will allow us to continue providing patients with highly specialized, personalized care.” Currently, an additional 30 beds are being added to the fifth

floor of the new hospital tower, including 16 intensive care unit beds and 14 intermediate beds. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022. Last year, the Weston Hospital expanded its transplant program to include living donor liver transplants, making it the only hospital in the region and the only hospital in Florida currently providing such services. Also in 2021, the 6,800-square-foot Lozick Women’s Center was added. This center provides a seamless experience for patients undergoing screening, diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. The opening of the new center and the addition of new services follow several years of robust expansion, led by the need to serve the growing number of patients from South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean coming to the Weston campus for care. In 2018, a new $232 million, five-story hospital tower was completed and the emergency services department expanded to increase capacity by 50 percent. In early 2020, the hospital unveiled its newly renovated registration area with additional touchpoints and kiosks for faster check-in for appointments. The expansion of Cleveland Clinic Weston extends the reach of Cleveland Clinic’s unique model of medicine, which combines patient-centered care with research and innovation to achieve clinical excellence every day.

THE WESTON MUSIC SOCIETY’S IN-SCHOOLS PROGRAM GOES PUBLIC

T

he Weston Music Society invites children ages 4-10 and their parents to participate in a special interactive afternoon of music featuring former Third World drummer, Willy Stewart. The free performance will be held at the Bonaventure Town Center, 16690 Saddle Club Road, on Saturday, May 7, from 1:00pm-3:00pm.

The WMS provides curious children with a chance to take a musical journey around the world. This journey will take them through Africa and trace the history of drums through cultures and continents. With our host, Willie Stewart, percussionist extraordinaire, children will learn about the roots of percussion and the history of rhythms through playing actual drums and instruments. Willy is also going to have a dance-off competition where he will have two students dance to the beat of the drums. The audience will participate in this by clapping for the student they believe is the winner of each dance-off. “I am so happy that children will get to play percussion instruments while learning about so many different types of music. This is the heart of the Weston Music Society’s mission, bringing live concerts to our students,” says Christy Blackford, Vice President of Education.

Gina Catone, WMS President, says, “This is the first time we are offering our parents a glimpse of our In-School Music Program which has been a significant component of our organization for twenty-five years.”

Tickets are free. Please register to get your free tickets at dianemarett@gmail.com.

2022 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

With So Many Choices, Your Kids Are Certain To Be –

Happy Campers! By Beverly Perkins

S

ince the pandemic, children have been deprived of valuable opportunities to socialize safely and, as a result, have become increasingly isolated. With COVID-19 restrictions easing, children can now go to camp this summer to enjoy socialization, various activities, and stressfree fun that they've missed! Camp is an opportunity for children to branch out, meet new people, try new things, and detach from reality for the summer. Between day camps, sports camps, science camps, dance camps, art camps, drama camps, and sleepaway camps, there is bound to be an option that is most suitable for your child.

DAY CAMPS, SPORTS CAMPS & SLEEPAWAY CAMPS

The multitude of camps available provide children and teens with opportunities to try new things and maybe even discover a new passion or develop an existing one even further. Camp encourages kids to live a healthy lifestyle by making new activities fun and by providing new experiences. For example, some day camps include an overnight in which your child will have the opportunity to bond with other campers longer than a traditional day. They may be able to hike and sleep in the woods for the night or just stay over and watch movies like a giant slumber party. Science camps challenge their campers to create robots and learn coding. Acting camps can get a timid child on stage whereas art camps can engage an active child to focus on painting and drawing while developing fine motor skills. Although any camp will ensure that your child has a fun summer, sleepaway camps can truly have such a positive impact on kids of all ages. Maybe it is because most of these camps do not allow outside technology, or because it is a simpler way of living with no outside “noise” or interference. Simply stated, camps away from home provide a unique environment far away from

the worries of life. Sleepaway camps have also been known to foster maturity and independence. Whether it is a few weeks or an entire summer, sleepaway camp inspires children and teens to be all they can be while bringing out the best version of themselves.

ADVENTURE OR ARTS

Depending what one chooses, specialized camps offer unique activities such as kayaking, horseback riding, waterskiing, ropes courses, rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, and so many more. For those wanting a quieter pace, art, yoga, and science camps offer courses to hone one’s skills and/or encourage new ones. Without camp, developing children miss out on new opportunities and the chance to discover a passion or talent that might have gone unnoticed otherwise and most importantly themselves. Whether choosing

a day camp or a sleepaway camp, your child will be able to express themselves without any judgment or fear. Even if you think your child is too shy for camp, the experience will encourage them to branch out and be more outgoing in the future.

CAMP FRIENDS ARE THE BEST FRIENDS

Not only is camp beneficial over summer, but meeting people (counselors and fellow campers) from across the country, down the street, and even from around the world is valuable year-round. Camp friends truly are the best friends and having people outside of their regular circle to lean on is priceless for all children going through elementary, middle, and high school years. Even when going to college, camp friends can help each other find roommates. The memories and friendships created at camp truly last a lifetime.

THE DONOWAY CENTER Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida. Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from

this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. ealing with peer pressure and fitting-in plays an important part in our human growth and development. At a reasonable level, they are necessary factors in character building, since it helps with learning skills such as decision making, resolving conflicts, and making new relationships. Sometimes you will have tough conversations about unjust people and situations. Your instinct as a parent might be to immediately avoid the conversation, however, having intentional, non-judgmental conversations with our children may help change the course of their choices. You are not the only one influencing your children's lives, therefore it is extremely important that you maintain the lines of communication open. Let your children know that you are always available and there for them ready to listen even through uncomfortable conversations such as bullying, sex, drugs, and unkind peers. As parents, it is important that we build healthy communication pathways with our children by setting realistic expectations about the conversation and being prepared to deal with a response you might not like. to see things differently than your children do, in most cases children or young adults will think differently you do and even intentionally do the opposite of what the parent recommends. This is a normal process of social-emotional development as they began their process of independence or transition into adulthood. From personal experience with my own children and the children, I have the privilege to watch grow up in my school, some of the best tips I can give parents is to apply their own positive pressure. Be inspiring and not judgmental. Provide information instead of demands. Share your own experiences and personal struggles growing up so you become more relatable to your children (remember you were not a perfect child either). Remember you are their first role model so lead by example and most importantly, demonstrate confidence in your children and remind them of how much you love them and trust regardless of their choices.

Is Someone You Love Suffering From Depression? Do Not Suffer in Silence, Fight Back.

D

epression may present itself as feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, inability to take care of yourself and your family, and a decline in your ability to function. Simply put, you are not at your best. According to the World Health Organization, depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease. Globally it is estimated that 5% of adults suffer from depression, according to the World Health Organization. However, depression among adults in the United States tripled in the early 2020 months of the global coronavirus pandemic—jumping from 8.5% before the pandemic to a staggering 28%. New research from the Boston University School of Public Health reveals that the elevated rate of depression has persisted into 2021, and even worsened, climbing to 33% affecting 1 in every 3 American adults. Unfortunately, people suffering from depression often cannot find relief from antidepressant medications. But there is good news: TMS is a non-drug depression treatment that may help when antidepressant medications don’t. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) involves the use of a very short pulsed magnetic field to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. Around since the 1980s, TMS has been utilized to study the nerve fibers that carry information about movements from the brain to the spinal cord and onto the muscles. Numerous trials have been conducted to investigate the safety and efficacy of TMS as a treatment for depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. There is ongoing research for its utilization in the treatment of other psychiatric conditions. During the FDA-approved treatment, the treating clinician will position the treatment coil over the left prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain known to affect mood. Through the treatment coil, the system will generate

TMS does not require anesthesia or hospital stays since treatment sessions are 20 minutes long and patients are able to drive themselves home after each session. Patients can resume all normal activities after treatment and with treatment duration being so short, it is easy to fit into an average person’s full schedule. When thinking about how to deal with depression, the side effects of treatment can be a cause for concern. The side effects of antidepressant drugs can be so disruptive that they dissuade a patient from adhering to a depression medication plan altogether.

VILLAGE OF VOLUNTEERS PUT ON

A RECORD-SETTING WESTON WORLD FEST By Carol Lema, Event Founder & Director

T

he 7th annual Weston World Fest was a record-setter: first, in its variety of country displays and costumes, second, in the number of student and adult volunteers (200), and finally, by almost doubling our pre-Covid attendance when it was last held in person in 2020, with close to 5,000 people coming through the gates on Sunday, March 6 at Weston Regional Park. Throughout the day, attendees visited 20 different country booths, sampled foods from around the world, and enjoyed international performances on stage. In addition, this year’s “Seasons” theme brought a colorful trellis-and-topiary-filled Garden for all ages to enjoy, populated also by The Eden Plants and area nonprofit organizations. What marked this year’s festival was not only the records set, but the efforts made by so many volunteers to “bring the world to the community”. Many area residents who have attended this colorful annual festival think that the event is something contracted out by the City of Weston, just like the concerts in the park or movies in the park. But Weston World Fest is actually a partnership between the Arts Council of Greater Weston, the City of Weston, and dozens of community neighbors who donate their time to make it happen. It truly “takes a village.” Annalisa Walker, City of Weston Special Events Manager, notes “The partnership between the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston is unique, and the success of this year’s Weston World Fest was a true team effort! It is amazing to see such a diverse community come together, with mutual respect, to enjoy the cultures of the world with such class.” While the Fest was a chance to be “part of something bigger than myself and give back to the community” for country co-director Linda Bowen, it also helped her “connect the dots” with her grandparents’ origins. Entertainment co-director Bhavana Jain loves living in Weston and the events that take place here and expressed a desire to “help our city” and “get to know the diverse cultures we get to see at this event”. First-time country booth participant Mia Bethania Quintana, representing Paraguay, observed: “We were able to represent a beautiful little part of the world that is our country, Paraguay. We’re grateful to the Arts Council and the City of Weston for so much work and dedication to detail so that

visitors could learn about the countries and enjoy this moment in time, which unites the hearts of everyone whose family has come to the U.S. from another place and enriches cultural understanding.” Adult general event volunteer Donna Dunkel added that “The volunteers were impressed by the event and enjoyed helping out. It was a good experience for all!” The experience appeared to be a positive one for other booth participants. Kim Schnitzius, Founder and President of the Weston Community Garden Society, commented: “We were all so excited to be a part of an event that has rapidly grown to iconic status in the City of Weston, and the 2022 festival exceeded expectations. Everyone who stopped by our booth was having a wonderful day, and they were all positive about our organization’s work as we strive to bring a community garden to the Weston area.” Claudina Fernandez, Arts Council Board member and Student Volunteer Coordinator, notes, ""The student volunteers usually look forward to volunteering at this event. They participated in putting together a country booth or helped the Arts Council with the setting and running of the event. Over 200 student volunteers were involved this year, most of them from Cypress Bay, Nova, Sagemont, American Heritage, Western High Schools, Falcon Cove, and Tequesta Middle.” Laura Dobrzanski, Arts Council President, sums up the growth of this event. “The popularity of this event has continued to expand every year making it one of Weston’s most premier cultural events. We are so grateful for our partnership with the City of Weston and for the energetic and passionate group of volunteers who continue to work tirelessly behind the scenes year after year.” As Founder and Director of WWF, Carol Lema notes, “It takes a village to produce a community event like this. As event founder and director, I’ve seen Weston World Fest develop from the time it was just an idea in my head after several years living abroad to the popular community event it is now. The goal of the Fest is to celebrate world cultures, present international performances and provide global cuisine with our South Florida community and its visitors. Our talented and dedicated volunteers make all that a reality.”

Sounds Fascinating, what makes Pizza Lovers different from other Italian restaurants? One key difference is how we prepare our dough. The two factors for making the best pizzas are time and temperature. It takes 48 hours for our dough to properly mature. This must be done at a very specific temperature. Properly prepared dough makes our pizza more digestible and, with greater flavor.

Cypress Bay Students Hold “Say Gay” Walkout By Bob Arnold

C

ypress Bay High School students staged a walk-out last month after the Florida State legislature passed a controversial bill. The Republican-sponsored Parental Rights in Education Bill has drawn national attention from the LGBTQ community. Critics refer to the bill as the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” because of language that precludes teachers for discussing sexual and gender identity in grades K through 3. Republican sponsors of the bill, including Governor Ron DeSantis, claim the law’s messaging has been skewed and that it is about helping parents control what their children learn about in school. Bill sponsor, Representative Joseph Harding, said “Nowhere in the bill do we limit them being able to confide to someone at school, that is the biggest misconception.” The portion of the new law that has caused the most controversy reads, “Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in K through 3rd grade or in a manner that is not age-appropriate.”

The Cypress Bay protest included several thousand students parading around the school's track waving rainbow flags and cheering in support of LGBTQ peers. “The language and the supporters of the bill and the rhetoric around the bill really shows

what this bill is, and it’s an attempt to hurt queer people like me,” high school senior and state-wide organizer Jack Petocz said. DeSantis has used the bill to garner national attention as he positions himself for a likely Presidential run in 2024.

Flatfoot in Children By Dr. Carlo A. Messina

Developmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it and there IS cause for some concern. Flatfeet are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity. Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. Occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain. Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination or the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability, General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear, as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly, occurs due to the deformity Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child! Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem.

COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME

C

omputer vision syndrome, also referred to as digital eye strain, describes a group of eye- and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader, and cell phone use.

Causes & risk factors

Viewing a computer or digital screen makes the eyes work harder. Often the letters on the computer or handheld device are not as precise or sharply defined, the level of contrast of the letters to the background is reduced, and the presence of glare and reflections on the screen may make viewing difficult. Viewing distances and angles used for this type of work are also often different from those commonly used for other reading or writing tasks. As a result, the eye focusing and eye movement requirements for digital screen viewing place additional demands on the visual system. Uncorrected vision problems can increase the severity of computer vision syndrome (CVS) or digital eye strain symptoms. Even people who have an eyeglass or contact lens prescription may find it's not suitable for the specific viewing distances of their computer screen. Some people tilt their heads at odd angles because their glasses aren't designed for looking at a computer or they bend toward the screen in order to see it clearly. These postures can result in muscle spasms or pain in the neck, shoulder, or back.

TEE TO GREEN

Two Invaluable Putting Tips By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

P

utting using a name or line on your ball can really help in setting you on the correct path line. The key is to use your dominant eye so you will not struggle in correctly lining up your ball. First, to determine your dominant eye, hold both hands out in front of you clasped together and create a small hole to look at the flag. Close one eye at a time to determine which eye is still able to see the flag. The eye that you see the flag with is your dominant eye and you will want to use that eye in lining up your ball. If you are left eye dominant you will want to aim your ball line with your left hand. If right eye dominant, use your right hand to aim your ball line at the target. Use the same hand to increase the odds of getting the ball directly in line between your dominant eye and the target. You should now find it much easier to aim the ball directly at the target. Once your ball is all lined up, go set up to the ball and make sure the clubface alignment matches the balls. Now you are ready to stoke it at your target. Trust your aim, begin focusing on your speed and you will become a better putter. If you are having difficulty matching your putter to the line (so it feels like you are aiming at your target), you may want to change your set-up until they match. Check to see if your eye is directly over the ball. Think about why this is so important. When you line up to putt you want to see the direct line from the ball to the intended target. In this case, it’s the hole that you are putting the ball into. Set up to putt with your normal putting stance over the ball and place a ball under your eye. Now you want to release that ball to see if it lands directly on top of the ball that you are using to putt into the hole. If the ball lands before it, you are standing too far away. If the ball lands past the ball to the right, you are standing too close. Keep trying this test to make sure your eye is directly over it with the ball always landing directly on top of it. You will be surprised how you need to make the proper adjustment to get the eye directly over the ball and see the right line that you are stroking the putter head on the same path your eyes see it. As always, see your local teaching Professional for a putting lesson. No one knows the game better than them.

Canine Urine Marking By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM

W

hat is Canine Urine

Marking? Canine urine marking is a natural, instinctive behavior in dogs, but it is not appropriate inside the house. Dogs, especially sexually intact male dogs, urinate on objects to mark their territory or to leave a message for other dogs. Urine marking behavior usually begins when the dog reaches sexual maturity.

What Causes Canine Urine Marking?

An intact male dog is most likely to mark when there is a female dog in heat nearby. Intact female dogs are also prone to marking when they are in heat. However, any dog may mark if another dog has urinated anywhere in the house. By urinating on the previous site of urination, the dog essentially “remarks” that location as its own territory. Unless the scent of the urine is completely removed, the dog is likely to keep urinating there. In multi-dog households, dogs, especially of the same sex, may compete for dominance, which can result in urine marking. This same behavior can occur in a confident dog that feels dominant to the owner. Any anxiety-producing situation can trigger urine marking as well. Workmen in the house, the arrival of a new baby, or visiting relatives can all produce anxiety in a dog. Even the addition of a new TV or a new computer may threaten a dog so that it feels compelled to mark the packing boxes. Rest assured, your dog is not trying to get back at you. It’s just doing what comes naturally.

How Is Canine Urine Marking Diagnosed?

Your veterinarian will start by discussing when, where, and how often the behavior occurs. A workup should be conducted to rule out medical disorders that may be causing the problem. If there are no medical causes, your veterinarian will need to determine if incomplete housetraining or other behavioral conditions are causing the problem.

How Can It Be Treated?

In most cases, overcoming urine marking requires multiple steps: 72 / Our City Weston / April 2022

If the dog is sexually intact, ▸ Neutering neutering is the first step. In many cases,

male dogs that are neutered stop urine marking within weeks to months of the procedure. Female dogs that are spayed almost always stop the behavior. However, behavior modification is often needed as well. Positive Reinforcement Never punish a dog for urine marking. Punishment can create more anxiety, which may only exacerbate the problem. Instead, you need to supervise your pet closely. If you see the dog starting to eliminate inside, interrupt him or her with a firm “No,” and bring the pet outside. When the dog urinates outside, reward him or her with praise and treats. Make sure to bring your dog outside frequently, always providing rewards for appropriate urination outdoors.

During retraining, it helps ▸ Confinement to limit your dog’s access to frequently

marked areas. You may need to confine your dog to a room or small area by shutting doors or by using baby gates or a crate. As your dog’s behavior improves,

you can gradually increase his or her freedom in the house. Be careful to frequently exercise your dog outside, so your dog does not become agitated with long periods of confinement.

Dominance Some dogs need ▸ Establish to be gently reminded that you are the

boss and that they need to work for rewards. Ask your dog to sit or lay down, then provide a reward such as a treat or a walk and TLC!

As a last resort, you can ▸ Medications consult your veterinarian for medica-

tions. In most cases, dogs are given a type of antidepressant. These drugs often take 4 to 6 weeks to make a difference. However, behavior modification is always the first choice and should continue, even with medications Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On” Dr. Miguel E.
