Spring Returns Making Old New Again
As we enter the fourth month of the year, we can feel the energy of new beginnings and fresh starts that come with the arrival of spring.
The start of spring represents a time of renewal, growth, and rejuvenation. The sun shines brighter, the flowers bloom, and the air feels lighter. It is a time to let go of the old and embrace the new, to take a deep breath and start afresh.
As poet and writer, Rainer Maria Rilke once said, "And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been." This quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of spring - a time for new experiences, new beginnings, and new possibilities.
As publishers, we believe that spring is the perfect time to start something new. Whether it's a new hobby, a new project, or a new goal, this season offers the perfect opportunity to turn over a new leaf and embark on a new adventure.
The coming of spring reminds us that summer is just around the corner. South Florida offers a plethora of summer activities for kids of all ages. Be sure to check out Our City’s Summer Camp Guide in this issue for a curated list of camp options for your kiddos!
We hope that this issue will motivate you to start something new and to embrace the beauty of the season. Let this be the month that you shed the old and welcome the new. After all, as Rilke reminds us, "spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems." Let us embrace the poetry of the season and revel in the joy of new beginnings.
Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

2023 Weston World Fest Celebrates Culture, Cuisine & Performances
Weston World Fest was one beautiful, cultural, and amazing community event! This 8th annual celebration of international cultures, cuisine and onstage performances took place on a hot and sunny Sunday, March 8 at Weston Regional Park. Approximately 3000 visitors happily took part in the activities offered.
From the Theme Village with its inflatable elephant and neon-striped zebra along the safari wall plus 3 animal habitats to the many colorful, engaging and creative country booths, from the variety of onstage performances to the global cuisine in the expanded restaurant section, from the student volunteers to the adults, and from the ornate costuming by participants to the engaging displays by local nonprofits, the community experience was outstanding.
Founder and Director Carol Lema said, “The effort to express the theme this year was incredible. Country booths, participating partner organizations, and even performers got into the spirit of highlighting this year’s theme “Animals of the Planet”. There were tigers and bears, llamas, guinea pigs, sloths, monkeys, whales, cows, turtles, bobcats, Komodo dragons, tropical birds, butterflies, capybaras and more – even a booth where kids could “feed” the animals.”
Onstage, there were Taiko drums, Mexican guitars, Indian Veena instruments, Chinese dragons, strolling singers, and dances of many nationalities, providing a visual, musical extravaganza. A total of 13 different local restaurants offered cuisines and beverages of the world.
Annalisa Walker, the City of Weston’s Special Events Manager, observed, “It really does take a village to make an event of this caliber happen, and this year's Weston World Fest did just that. It was exciting to see the community come together and immerse themselves in the cultures of the world.”
Laura Dobrzanski, President of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, summed it up. “We were so pleased with the steady stem of visitors throughout the day. Attendees of all ages enjoyed henna art, temporary tattoos, and a Jurassic photo op, kids filled their passports with stamps and a full crowd enjoyed the performances and the international food offerings. There was so much energy and excitement from the crowd throughout the day, it definitely highlighted how crucial it is for us to continue our efforts in organizing events like this that inspire others and bring our community together.”

The 16th Annual Student Artist Showcase 2023 is an exhibition celebrating the exceptional work being created in the classrooms of Weston area schools. This exhibition is co-sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston, in collaboration with the Weston Friends of the Library. It will be on display in the Weston Branch Library throughout the
month of April during normal operating library hours.
Creative and critical thinking is an essential skill to our students' current and future success as highlighted in STEAM, which includes the Arts. We highly encourage the arts in our schools to foster creativity and innovation in all our young artists.
During the course of the school year, art teachers recognize works created in the classrooms that show unique creativity and ability. They then hold those works aside for this exhibition. Each teacher is responsible for selecting up to 12 pieces of art and submitting them to our showcase.
At the end of the showcase, a reception is held where every student artist will receive a certificate of participation and a ribbon in this exhibition. In addition to the participation award, qualified members of the arts community are invited as guest judges to select placement awards for various categories.

Weston YMCA Family Center Hosts Healthy Kids Day
Get a head start on summer fun at Healthy Kids Day at the Weston YMCA Family Center on Saturday, April 29th. The free community event is a chance for children and parents to explore the many opportunities available at the Y this summer to keep kids’ minds and bodies active.
For 30 years, Healthy Kids Day has been where fun and play become lifelong memories. Join the community for a day of healthy, fun activities that celebrate kids being kids. This is a FREE event, and it is open to the community. Healthy Kids Day is part of a national YMCA initiative to improve health and well-being for children and families. It will feature activities such as Y-Fit games and arts and crafts, as well as educational information on nutrition and healthy living designed to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.
Research shows that children gain weight two to three times faster during the summer vacation than during the school year. The YMCA wants to help them stay
active and continue learning through our summer programs which have health and educational components.
The Y promotes family fun and fitness during the summer months. It encourages families to step away from the TV or computer screen and spend time outdoors, engaging in playful activity together for at least an hour a day.
At Healthy Kids Day, children can enroll in the Y-Fit youth wellness program, which combines fun and active play. Physical activity is a large component of the Y’s summer camp programs. Families can learn more about the many options available to all ages from preschool through high school. There will also be demonstrations from some of the Y’s new camps.
The event is hosted at the Weston YMCA from 9:00 am till noon.
Healthy Kids Day is a great way to figure out exactly what your child wants to do this summer. Just because school is out doesn’t mean learning needs to stop. The Y supports families in their efforts to teach healthy habits and keep kids active and learning, preparing them for a brighter future. It’s part of the Y’s promise to strengthen the communities we serve.

Weston Resident Becomes Newest Board Member of NSU’s Huizenga College of Business
The Huizenga College of Business at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) announced that Weston Resident Anurag Gupta has been appointed to its Board of Governors.
Mr. Gupta is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Roseburg Forest Products, Inc., a multi-billion dollar manufacturer of wood products in North America and Asia. He is also an investor and advisor to a number of start-up companies, including Drive My Way, Inc., a post-revenue start-up company in the digital recruiting marketplace, Kraig Bio Labs, a biotechnology company focused on the development and commercialization of spider silk, and Targatek, a company that seeks to revolutionize the way team leaders lead through its Performance Automation Platform.
Gupta joins the school’s Board of Governors at an exciting time in its history. The school just announced that is had earned business accreditation for the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship from AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
“When I unveiled NSU’s Vision, Mission, and Core Values, I challenged all the deans to work with their faculty and staff to obtain recognition from their respective, preeminent accrediting bodies,” said Dr. George Hanbury, NSU President and CEO. “It is now my privilege to announce that NSU has earned accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) – the world’s largest business education alliance.”
Founded in 1916, AACSB is the longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools, and the largest business education network connecting learners, educators, and businesses worldwide.
Synonymous with the highest standards of quality, AACSB accreditation inspires new ways of thinking within business education globally. As a result, less than six percent of the world’s schools offering business degree programs hold AACSB business accreditation. Through today’s ratification, a total of 980 institutions across 60 countries and territories have earned AACSB accreditation in business out of more than 16,000 worldwide.
Mr. Gupta graduated Magna Cum Laude and earned his Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering in 1987 and his Masters in Electrical Engineering in 1990 from the University of Toledo, Ohio, USA where his Master’s Thesis was funded by NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned his Masters of Business Administration in 1994 from the Stuart School of Business, at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA. He is a resident of Weston, Florida and is active in the local community.

On 02/23/23 we had the opportunity to witness the Rotary Club of Weston in Action. This time it was at the 2023 Annual Drawdown which is a reverse raffle organized to raise funds for our high school seniors at the West Broward Porsche dealership.
As you arrive, Jim Inglis and his team valet your vehicle. In a state of the industry facility, surrounded by Porsche's top of the line vehicles, the ambiance is set with lively songs performed by Cypress Bay's very own Jazz Band under the tutelage of Gordon Thompson, the energy that a group of dedicated Rotarians, sponsors and local business can create when they come together for a great cause and we are transported to a Venetian Carnival.
You are greeted by friendly smiles from Deb O'Connor, Manuela Glock, Emilie Wallace, Marc Weiss, Yasmine Mouhamed, Dan Fitzgerald, Claudia Georgiopoulos and Lenzel Davis.
As our MC's Jesus "Jay" Sanchez and Peter Williams take the stage with the help of Robin Lewis and Alfredo Aguirre. The raffle begins. In the background, Frank Drier, Christiano Niccolucci and Vern Cameron are making sure the raffle runs smoothly. The students from Western and Cypress Bay High Schools are doing their part as well.
Even though we are sad to see our number called, we feel proud because we know that over $39,000 are being raised to help students in our community pursue their dreams of going to college.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT AN ESTATE PLAN CONSULTATION
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
An estate plan consultation is your chance to meet a lawyer to discuss your goals and concerns for your family’s future. During that meeting, you may review your assets and who you wish would receive them upon your death. Your attorney will point out other issues frequently arising in estate planning, such as taxes and possible disagreements between beneficiaries. Any previous estate planning documents should be reviewed, and the lawyer can advise you on how to change or update them to make sure they still meet your needs and goals.
Estate planning is a very personal and highly customizable process, and there are many unique estate planning strategies depending on your needs. Every family is different, and a "one-size-fits-all" approach to estate planning is not appropriate. Some people may have unique assets, such as art collections or cryptocurrency, that require special planning considerations. Others may have specific family dynamics or charitable goals that need to be addressed in their estate plan, while others want to minimize tax liabilities.
Here are a few unique planning strategies that an experienced estate planning attorney may utilize.
▸ Incentive Trusts: These provide financial motivations to your heirs for achieving certain goals or milestones. This can be a useful estate planning tool to ensure that your children are financially responsible, educated or leading a healthy lifestyle.
▸ Pet Trusts - Some people set up a trust for their pets, with specific instructions for their care and well-being. This includes appointing a guardian for the pet, providing for food and medical care, and even specifying burial arrangements for the pet.
▸ Charitable Giving: Some individuals include charitable giving as part of their estate plan. A charitable remainder trust can also be used to donate assets to a charitable organization while still retaining an income stream from those assets during your lifetime.
▸ Legacy Planning and Ethical Wills: These involve creating a plan for passing down your values, beliefs, and traditions to future generations. It may include writing a family history, creating a time capsule, and passing down personal mementos and other sentimental items. They aren’t legally binding but can be a meaningful way to share your thoughts and feelings with your children.
▸ Business Succession Planning: If you own a business, it's essential to create a plan for what will happen to the business if you become incapacitated or after you pass away. This could mean choosing a successor or making a buy-sell agreement to make sure the change of ownership goes smoothly.
▸ Family Heirlooms: Family heirlooms and sentimental items can be passed down to future generations. (Of course, kids don’t value chinaware or figurines like previous generations!)
▸ Trusts for Special Needs Individuals: Trusts can be established to provide ongoing financial support for those with special needs without jeopardizing their eligibility for government benefits. These are just a few examples of the many unique and interesting estate planning strategies that are available. An experienced estate planning attorney can help you create a plan that meets your specific wishes, personal objectives and unique family dynamics.

HOW DOES LANGUAGE LEARNING WORK IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS?
Language acquisition refers to an assimilation process; this process involves intuition and subconscious learning. Children are unaware of grammatical rules. Kids develop phonetic, structure, understanding, and vocabulary characteristics of the language just by speaking the language. On the other hand, adults have the interference of the previous language (native language) wondering “the why” and comparing the grammar structures of both languages.
Children’s Language Experience
There are similarities between first and second language acquisition by children. The language process and fundamentals of the language follow a similar journey. There are always children who develop language skills faster than others, but they all finally acquire the native or target language. We all know children acquire language through a subconscious process during which they are unaware of grammatical rules. This is like the way they acquire their first language. Children feel what is and is not appropriate. Children learn better through having natural communication. According to Krashen and his language acquisition theory, natural order is the natural progression of
By Dr. Katya Pizarro
language development exhibited by children and second language learners. Language acquisition should avoid the correction since it might inhibit language acquisition. He also says that the input needs to be comprehensible.
Adult’s Language Experience
Language acquisition by adults could be similar too, but this process implies some other factors like fossilization. Some adult language learners passed the critical age of language learning. They acquired all their language skills using their native language. When they study a second language, they always have the shadow or background of the native language. Some adult learners acquire a native pronunciation of the target language, but most of them do not. They are fluent and know the language well, but they do not sound like native speakers. Adults have all the language stages beginning with the silent stage until they break the ice to produce the foreign language better, based on the instruction and exposure of the language. Learning a second language is a long journey that involves persistence and dedication. It is like learning our native language. We never stop learning. It is an active and satisfying process
that parents and teachers share all the time. It is also interesting to observe how the learning curves of children, adolescents and adults are unique in their own ways. Linguists have been studying the characteristics of language acquisition at the different stages in life, and they all seem to agree in that the sooner you can expose an individual to a foreign language acquisition, the easier it will be for him or her to absorb it. Individuals who were exposed to the learning of a foreign language at different stages in life (my case) all seemed to agree that a child under the age of 5 can acquire more than one language at a native level without major struggle. Indeed, the role of language teachers does also take place in the process. Teachers should teach children a foreign language as if they were just beginning to acquire their own. Teaching adults is all about motivation. Motivation keeps adult students engaged and willing to assimilate new language speech. Language teachers must distinguish specific approaches and techniques based on students’ needs and language experiences. In other words, teaching effectiveness depends much more on the teachers' interpretation and awareness of students’ needs!

2023 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE (continued)
MULTI-GENERATIONAL LIVING: A GROWING TREND IN MODERN SOCIETY
here is a new trend in town: Multi-generational living. We are moving from the “me” generation to the “us” generation. One of the main reasons for the growing trend in multi-generational living is changing economic conditions. With the rising cost of living, many families find it difficult to afford their own homes, especially in desirable areas with high housing costs. By pooling their resources and living under one roof, multiple generations can save money on housing expenses and share other expenses such as utilities, food, and transportation. Another reason for the popularity of multi-generational living is the desire for more family support and closeness. In many cultures, family is highly valued. The role of extended family is often emphasized. By living together, family members can provide emotional support to each other, as well as share in the joys and challenges of everyday life. This type of living can also be
By Rose Sklar
Tbeneficial for children. Children who grow up in multi-generational households may have more opportunities for learning and growth, as they can interact with people of different ages and backgrounds. They may also have a greater sense of security and stability as they have more people to rely on for care and support.
“The number of Americans who live in multi-generational family households is about four times larger than in the 1970s, according to a March Pew Research Center report. As of March 2021, there were 59.7 million U.S. residents who lived with multiple generations under one roof.” Mark Gordon, The Observer
How do you select a home that will set your family up for success?
A place to age safely. Dedicate one floor or wing for older adults — without stairs. Wide hallways and doorways are a plus. Define personal spaces with separate suites. Ideally, each suite should have separate entrances and ensuite bathrooms in a multi-generational home. A living room and
kitchenette per suite create even more privacy. Incorporate flexible spaces: Flex or bonus rooms can be used as workout rooms or office spaces — separate from the common areas of the rest of the house, giving all residents ample room to have the space they need.
Many baby boomers and their parents anticipate assisted living or moving in with their children. This is a challenge for everyone. The good news is many savvy builders across the country are now embracing this new trend and are building homes with Multi-generational suites, flex spaces with private entrances, kitchenettes, and more, while still allowing access to the main house.
What if you love the home you are in?
Reconfiguring your current home to accommodate this growing need is becoming more common. It can be a wise investment for families looking to save money and stay close.
Is multi-generational living the right move for your family?

American Cancer Society Relay For Life Set to Raise Money to Fight Cancer
The local installment of the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay For Life will take place at Cypress Bay High School on Saturday, April 22, 2023. It is open to everyone in the community. Relay For Life is a movement that unites survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and participants in the belief that the future can be cancer-free. With 2.5 million participants worldwide, it is the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event.
At Relay For Life events, individuals facing cancer are not alone. Each year, over 2,500 Relay events take place nationwide to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers. These events offer special activities throughout the year, allowing survivors and caregivers to connect with others and access a strong support system. No donation is too small. Each and every dollar counts. Donations help fund ground-
breaking cancer research, patient care programs, and can make a difference in communities like ours. With every donation, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives.
The "Broward Power" relay's fundraising goal for this year is $160,000. These funds are utilized to support cancer research, fund education programs, and provide services to cancer patients and their families.
The American Cancer Society's mission is more important than ever, as the needs of people facing cancer continue despite the ongoing crisis. Funds raised through Relay For Life help to sustain the Society's efforts in cancer research, providing a 24/7 helpline, and ensuring patients receive the care and support they need.
Cypress Bay’s Greased Lightning Robotics Team Wins State Championship
The Cypress Bay Varsity Robotics Team took home the top prize at the State of Florida Championship last month at the Florida FTC Championship. The Championship is a celebration of the end of the Florida FIRST Tech Challenge season and determines which Florida teams will qualify to attend the World Championship in Houston, TX.
Cypress Bay student Natalie (Nat) Menasche won the State's Dean List Award and was recognized as one of the state’s most outstanding robotics students. The Weston High School’s teams earned First Place Connect Award & 2nd place Motivate Award.
The robotics team’s name, Greased Lightning, is a tribute to the 1950s movie Grease and is the longest-established team at
the Cypress Bay Robotics Club! The team is the culmination of the student’s desire to become “creators” in the truest sense of the term. Founded more than 14 years ago, the team has grown from just a few participants to a competitive force at the regional, state, and even national levels.
Greased Lightning competes in a number of competitions, including First Tech Challenge (FTC), MATE, Vex, SeaPerch, SECME, and more. Robotics students use their newly acquired technical savvy to have fun: they build racing cars, 3D print rehabilitative technology, write technical papers, and more.
Robotics is the art of forging atoms and using natural physical dynamics to accomplish any task. It is one of the most interdisciplinary of all tech fields, given it is the science of creation. It intersects 3D printing/manufacturing, metallurgy, computer science, mechanical and electrical physics, biomimetics and bioengineering, materials science, electronics, control theory, and abstract math.
Good luck to Grease Lightening at the World Championships!

The 2023 Long Key Nature Photo Contest is Here!
At 164.8 acres, Long Key is one of the largest natural areas managed by Broward County Parks and Recreation. As recently as a century ago, this elevated oak hammock was part of a series of islands surrounded by Everglades marshes. Long Key encompasses some of the most significant archaeological, historical, and ecological resources in the county, as the area was inhabited by the ancient Tequestas and the more modern Seminoles. Traces of human settlement here go back 3,000 years.
In the 1900's, Long Key became a citrus grove, a dairy farm, then Pioneer City...an Old West theme park with its own railroad...and finally, the highly-popular Kapok Tree restaurant, which was known for its Imperial Roman motif amidst spectacular landscaping. In 1990, following the closing and demolition of the Kapok Tree, Broward County acquired the land and began returning much of it to its natural state by restoring wetlands and transplanting non-native trees to other parks.
The Long Key Nature Center was completed in 2008 and today boasts a Visitor's Center which includes a scale model of the site, a 2,760 square-foot rental facility called Oak Hammock Hall, which is great for meetings, weddings, receptions, and other special events, an Exhibit Hall highlighting the history of the Tequesta and Seminole Native Americans on Long Key and the Everglades Theater
which shows a 12 minute video, Long Key: An Island in the Everglades.
Each year, photographers show their talents and win cash prizes by participating in the 2nd Annual Photo Contest sponsored by Friends of Long Key (FOLK), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to preserving the natural history of the heavily forested park and educating the community about it, hosts a Nature photo contest.
The photo competition is open to nature photographers of all ages. Some of the contest details include:
The contest will provide cash awards for “Best in Show,” 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the categories of “Scenery,” “Botanical / Plants,” “Wildlife,” and “Butterflies / Moths / Insects / Arachnids.” There will also be prices in two youth category age groups (under 13 and 13-17). Cash award values range from $10 to $125. All entered pictures must be taken within the Long Key grounds. Entries of up to four images require a small entry fee donation and will only be accepted at the Nature Center.
Entries will be accepted at the Long Key Nature Center, on April 15th, 22nd, and 29th, from 10am to 2pm.

Kindness, a Hidden Super Power
ccording to the Cambridge English Dictionary, Kindness is the quality of being generous, helpful and caring about other people or an act showing this quality.
I would also add to this definition that kindness is a way to feel empathy for what is happening in our surroundings, it is to treat others the way you would like to be treated. Kindness is something that is not seen frequently in the world we are living in right now and we need to keep it alive. This begins by teaching our children how to practice kindness until we do it without even thinking about it. Being kind whenever possible can help our society, and furthermore, the world, to be a better place.
HOW CAN I TEACH MY CHILDREN TO BE “KIND”?
▸ Kindness must be present at home. Children need nurturing adults and we,
By Amelis Lopez
Aas parents, need to set an example. We need to stay in the “calm zone” even when we do not feel it. We must be compassionate to others, be respectful and also, we need to be kind to ourselves.
▸ Teaching empathy by showing them how our actions might affect other people's feelings. For instance, if your child is being disrespectful to you, wait for the right moment and make him or her know how you feel about the incident, how his or her actions/words affected you and made you feel.
▸ Practice or perform little acts of kindness by doing simple activities such as donating toys, volunteering at school, participating in community activities, helping with chores, giving compliments, holding the door for others, etc. We have tons of opportunities to teach them kindness on a daily basis.
▸ Showing them that acts of kindness makes you feel positive emotions, it
makes you feel better and it makes you a better person. Show them that you can do good without expecting a reward.
If we practice acts of kindness as a way of living, we have the power of making not just other people’s lives happier, but also our own. Let’s contribute to making the world a happier and brighter place!

Fort Lauderdale Beach, April 29 & 30
If you “feel the need for speed” then head to Fort Lauderdale Beach on the last weekend of April and look to the skies. It showcases the best of military and civilian aircraft, as well as thrilling aerobatic performances and skydiving stunts. If you are a fan of flying machines and adrenaline-pumping action, you won’t want to miss this spectacular show over the Atlantic Ocean.
The Fort Lauderdale Air Show will take place on April 29th and 30th. The show will start around 11:45 am and end around 3:00 pm each day. The center of the show will be located at Sunrise Boulevard and A1A, but you can enjoy the aerial displays from anywhere along the four miles of Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Some of the performers that have been announced so far include the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the F-22 Raptor Demo Team, the Red Bull Helicopter, the Red Bull Air Force, Kirby Chambliss, the SOCOM Para-Commandos, the Air Force Heritage Flight, the T-38 Talon and Michael Goulian24. More performers will be added as the show date approaches, so stay tuned for updates.
If you want to have the best viewing experience, you can purchase tickets for one of the VIP or premium viewing areas. These areas offer reserved seating, shaded tents, catering, beverages, private restrooms, and other amenities. You can also opt for a sandbox, which is a private area on the beach for up to six people with chairs and umbrellas.
Parking for the Fort Lauderdale Air Show can be challenging due to limited
spaces and high demand. The best option is to use public transportation or ride-sharing services to get to the beach. You can also park at one of the designated parking garages or lots and take a shuttle bus to the show site. Parking passes are available online for advance purchase.
The Fort Lauderdale Air Show is more than just a show. It is a celebration of aviation history, technology, and skill. It is also a tribute to the men and women who serve in our armed forces and protect our freedom. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness some of the most amazing flying machines in action over one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida.

Flatfoot in Children
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
Developmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it and there IS cause for some concern. Flatfeet are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity.
Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. Occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain.
Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination or the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability, General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear, as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly, occurs due to the deformity
Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child! Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem.

THE
By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician
s the weather warms up and we spend more time outdoors, it's important to be aware of the potential damage that UV radiation can cause to our eyes. UV radiation can lead to a range of eye problems, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and even cancer of the eye. Fortunately, there's a simple way to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of UV radiation: wear sunglasses.
When choosing sunglasses, it's important to look for a few key features. First and foremost, make sure that the sunglasses you choose provide 100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays. This will help to protect your eyes from the full range of harmful radiation that the sun can emit.
Polarized lenses can also be helpful in reducing glare and improving visibility, particularly when you're spending time on
Athe water or in other bright environments. And if you're someone who spends a lot of time driving, consider choosing a pair of sunglasses with lenses that are specifically designed for driving. These lenses can help to reduce glare and improve contrast, making it easier to see the road and avoid accidents.
It's not just adults who need to be mindful of protecting their eyes - children are particularly susceptible to damage from UV radiation, since their eyes are still developing. Make sure that kids are wearing sunglasses when they're outside, and that they're also wearing hats to provide additional protection.
When it comes to choosing sunglasses for kids, look for models that are specifically designed for children. These sunglasses are typically smaller in size and are made from materials that are more durable and less likely to break. Many children's sunglasses also come with fun designs and colors that kids will enjoy wearing.
Remember that sunglasses aren't just for sunny days - they can be helpful year-round,
even when it's overcast or cloudy outside. UV radiation can still penetrate clouds and cause damage to your eyes, so it's important to wear sunglasses even on days when the sun isn't shining as brightly.
Finally, be sure to take good care of your sunglasses to ensure that they last as long as possible. Store them in a protective case when you're not wearing them, and avoid leaving them in hot cars or other areas where they might be exposed to extreme temperatures.
In conclusion, wearing sunglasses is an easy and effective way to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of UV radiation. Look for sunglasses that provide 100% protection against UVA and UVB rays, and consider additional features like polarized lenses or lenses designed for driving. And don't forget to make sure that your children are wearing sunglasses as well. With a little bit of care and attention, you can help to ensure that your eyes stay healthy and protected for years to come.

Temple Dor Dorim Bids Farewell
Early Childhood Center Director Set to Retire
Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center (ECC) Director, Sheila Woldenberg, has announced her retirement after 24 years of service. Sheila has been a part of the ECC Staff since its beginning as a teacher for its Tiny Tots program. She helped build the school’s toddler curriculum and coordinated the Mommy and Me and toddler classes. Throughout the years, she has worked as Dor Dorim’s ECC Program Director, Camp Director, Assistant Director and Director.
Sheila is truly beloved by the thousands of children and parents she has worked with, many of whom now live across the country. Sheila will be missed by students, parents, and coworkers alike. While Sheila is retiring from her position in the ECC, she plans to remain involved with the Temple and school. Sheila has given her heart and so much of her time and energy to the children and families of Dor Dorim.
In recognition and appreciation of Sheila’s devotion to Temple Dor Dorim and the Early Childhood Center, she is the recipient of the 2023 Rabbi Norman S. Lipson Generations Award and will be honored at the Temple’s 25th Annual Gala on Saturday, April 29.
Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center
The ECC has provided early childhood education for children ages infant through pre-K for 24 years. The Center’s offerings include a daily after-school program, summer camp, and “Baby & Me” classes for new parents.
Sheila credit’s the ECC’s success to its focus on what is most important. “We provide a loving and safe environment, rich in curriculum, that is developmentally appropriate for all ages. We are also accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). We currently are the only NAEYC accredited preschool in Weston.” She said, “At Temple Dor Dorim we believe children develop a world of knowledge through creative play. Play provides children with hands-on experiences that help them grow developmentally, cognitively, emotionally and socially.”
“With play as an integral component of the ECC’s curriculum, it enables us to create a warm, nurturing environment where children feel safe to take risks while exploring their world.” Sheila expanded on the link between play and learning, “This type of environment stimulates curiosity and fosters a lifelong
love of learning.”
The ECC’s curriculum is integrated so that experiences are connected, and learning is meaningful. Through a centers-based approach, children are exposed to a language-rich environment that encourages the early skills necessary for reading and writing. Along with academic readiness, the ECC’s goal is to instill within children and their families a cultural identity, morals and values and a sense of belonging to the Jewish community.
The ECC offers a dual language program and includes special enrichments such as Spanish, Judaica, music, sports, and library. They also offer after-school enrichments from 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm and mini camps during periods when schools are closed.
Safety and health are priorities at the ECC, with security officers, an occupational therapist and a speech therapist on staff.

Two Invaluable Putting Tips
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Putting using a name or line on your ball can really help in setting you on the correct path line. The key is to use your dominant eye so you will not struggle in correctly lining up your ball.
First, to determine your dominant eye, hold both hands out in front of you clasped together and create a small hole to look at the flag. Close one eye at a time to determine which eye is still able to see the flag. The eye that you see the flag with is your dominant eye and you will want to use that eye in lining up your ball.
If you are left eye dominant you will want to aim your ball line with your left hand. If right eye dominant, use your right hand to aim your ball line at the target. Use the same hand to increase the odds of getting the ball directly in line between your dominant eye and the target. You should now find it much easier to aim the ball directly at the target.
Once your ball is all lined up, go set up to the ball and make sure the clubface alignment matches the balls. Now you are ready to stoke it at your target. Trust your aim, begin focusing on your speed and you will become a better putter. If you are having difficulty matching your putter to the line (so it feels like you are aiming at your target), you may want to change your set-up until they match.
Check to see if your eye is directly over the ball. Think about why this is so important. When you line up to putt you want to see the direct line from the ball to the intended target. In this case, it’s the hole that you are putting the ball into. Set up to putt with your normal putting stance over the ball and place a ball under your eye. Now you want to release that ball to see if it lands directly on top of the ball that you are using to putt into the hole. If the ball lands before it, you are standing too far away. If the ball lands past the ball to the right, you are standing too close. Keep trying this test to make sure your eye is directly over it with the ball always landing directly on top of it. You will be surprised how you need to make the proper adjustment to get the eye directly over the ball and see the right line that you are stroking the putter head on the same path your eyes see it.
As always, see your local teaching Professional for a putting lesson. No one knows the game better than them.

Canine Urine Marking
What is Canine Urine Marking?
Canine urine marking is a natural, instinctive behavior in dogs, but it is not appropriate inside the house. Dogs, especially sexually intact male dogs, urinate on objects to mark their territory or to leave a message for other dogs. Urine marking behavior usually begins when the dog reaches sexual maturity.
What Causes Canine Urine Marking?
An intact male dog is most likely to mark when there is a female dog in heat nearby. Intact female dogs are also prone to marking when they are in heat. However, any dog may mark if another dog has urinated anywhere in the house. By urinating on the previous site of urination, the dog essentially “remarks” that location as its own territory. Unless the scent of the urine is completely removed, the dog is likely to keep urinating there. In multi-dog households, dogs, especially of the same sex, may compete for dominance, which can result in urine marking. This same behavior can occur in a confident dog that feels dominant to the owner.
Any anxiety-producing situation can trigger urine marking as well. Workmen in the house, the arrival of a new baby, or visiting relatives can all produce anxiety in a dog. Even the addition of a new TV or a new computer may threaten a dog so that it feels compelled to mark the packing boxes. Rest assured, your dog is not trying to get back at you. It’s just doing what comes naturally.
How Is Canine Urine Marking Diagnosed?
Your veterinarian will start by discussing when, where, and how often the behavior occurs. A workup should be conducted to rule out medical disorders that may be causing the problem. If there are no medical causes, your veterinarian will need to determine if incomplete housetraining or other behavioral conditions are causing the problem.
How Can It Be Treated?
In most cases, overcoming urine marking requires multiple steps:
▸ NEUTERING If the dog is sexually intact, neutering is the first step. In
By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
many cases, male dogs that are neutered stop urine marking within weeks to months of the procedure. Female dogs that are spayed almost always stop the behavior. However, behavior modification is often needed as well.
▸ POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
Never punish a dog for urine marking. Punishment can create more anxiety, which may only exacerbate the problem. Instead, you need to supervise your pet closely. If you see the dog starting to eliminate inside, interrupt him or her with a firm “No,” and bring the pet outside. When the dog urinates outside, reward him or her with praise and treats. Make sure to bring your dog outside frequently, always providing rewards for appropriate urination outdoors.
▸ CONFINEMENT During retraining, it helps to limit your dog’s access to frequently marked areas. You may need to confine your dog to a room or small area by shutting doors or by using baby gates or a crate. As your dog’s behavior improves, you can
gradually increase his or her freedom in the house. Be careful to frequently exercise your dog outside, so your dog does not become agitated with long periods of confinement.
▸ ESTABLISH DOMINANCE Some dogs need to be gently reminded that you are the boss and that they need to work for rewards. Ask your dog to sit or lay down, then provide a reward such as a treat or a walk and TLC!
▸ MEDICATIONS As a last resort, you can consult your veterinarian for medications. In most cases, dogs are given a type of antidepressant. These drugs often take 4 to 6 weeks to make a difference. However, behavior modification is always the first choice and should continue, even with medications

HB 223
By State Representative Robin Bartleman
April is World Autism Month
it’s an opportunity to increase the understanding and foster the acceptance of people with Autism. About 1 in 44 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It’s characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Signs usually appear by age 2 or 3, but can appear as early as 18 months. If you or someone you know is concerned about signs of autism or a child’s development, it’s imperative that testing be conducted by a healthcare provider.
In order to ensure that students with developmental disabilities and autism have the best education outcomes, I filed HB 223, Public School Student Progression for Students with Disabilities. This bill came about after meeting with the mother of Ana, a student with Down Syndrome. Ana
is fortunate because her mother focuses on her abilities, not her disabilities, and gives her every opportunity to reach her full potential. Ana’s situation opened my eyes to how damaging the inflexibility of our pupil progression statute was. This bill changes the statute so that if a parent chooses to retain their child with a disability in ESE Pre-K, that retention will count towards a good-cause exemption, so the child does not have to be retained twice prior to fourth grade. It’s very technical, but parents of students with disabilities are faced with a tough choice when their student moves to kindergarten. Many students do not have the prerequisite skills needed to be successful at kindergarten. In many cases, the best choice would be to keep the student in an additional year of ESE Pre-K in order to set a strong foundation. This bill unanimously passed through its first committee stop, and I am excited to give parents a choice and a pathway to best meet the needs of their children.

Be Smart About Water Safety
By District Chief Todd Draizin
One of the most beautiful things about Florida is the year-round warm, sunny weather. While this is great for enjoying fun times at the beach or pool, it brings with it some special considerations for safety. The Florida Department of Children and Families reports Florida “loses more children under the age of 5 to drowning than any other state” in the country. The most recent Florida Health data reports the state saw 486 unintentional drownings in 2021; 67 of which occurred in Broward County. Implementing a layered approach to safety can help keep children safe in and around water.
There is no substitution for responsible adult supervision. Children should be kept within arm’s reach of an adult around any body of water. While boating, all children should wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. If children live in an area with access to a pool, lake, canal, or beach, install door and window alarms on any door or window leading out to the water. For residences with pools, install four-foot fencing around the pool and be sure not to leave any toys in or near the water. For added safety, enroll children in swim lessons. The Children’s Services Council of Broward County and SWIM Central offer coupons to off-set the cost of swim lessons for all Broward County children ages 6 months to 8 years old. The coupon is renewable annually for a value of $40 per year. For more information or to register to receive your coupon, please visit https://watersmartbroward.org/programs/ kids-swim-coupon/. To help families implement their layered safety plan, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue in Weston is pleased to partner with local community partners to offer a limited number of door/window alarms for families whose homes have a pool or backup to a body of water. If you need a pool/window alarm, please email Life Safety Educator, Melanie Brocato at Melanie_Brocato@sheriff.org. Supplies are limited and requests will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis.
Playing in and around the water can be fun! Implementing a layered approach to safety can help keep children safe in and around the water. ▸ For more info, contact BSO Public Educator Melanie Brocato at 954-389-2090 or by email at Melanie_Brocato@Sheriff.org.

ducation and training are critical components to enhancing our knowledge and performance within the public safety profession. Since I took office in 2019, the Broward Sheriff's Office has made tremendous progress in training, education and preparedness. Today, I am proud to share BSO is a flagship organization for training in the State of Florida and the nation. With a 15% reduction in overall crime, we are seeing how our success is positively impacting public safety for the residents of Broward County.
BSO first responders train to maintain and enhance their ability to respond to any crisis. BSO has introduced over 80 new courses in the past four years with nearly 80,000 completed trainings. Further, we have hosted approximately 50 trainings for more than 1,000 members from local, state and federal agencies. With the completion of our new state-of-the-art training center
By Sheriff Gregory Tony
Ein late 2023, we will continue to provide the most advanced public safety training in Florida.
Our commitment to training also encompasses academics. As an organization, we encourage our employees to pursue continuing education. We have partnered with universities to expand higher education and professional development opportunities. Since 2019, more than 200 employees have enrolled in higher education institutions, and over 50 employees have been awarded degrees, most at the master’s and doctorate levels. We have also increased our participation in executive-level training courses.
As an academic myself, I welcome ongoing learning opportunities – especially when it comes to public safety. Currently, I am enrolled as a doctorate student at Nova Southeastern University, pursuing a Ph.D. in criminal justice and organizational leadership. In 2022, I was selected by the FBI to participate in the prestigious National Executive Institute Leadership Course. This tremendous opportunity is given to only the
top law enforcement administrators in the nation, and I was honored to be part of it.
In addition to training and education, we have continued to focus on accreditation. Accreditation is awarded to agencies that meet and exceed professional standards. Today, BSO has become Florida's most accredited public safety organization, demonstrating our commitment to operating in compliance with industry standards and best practices. We currently hold 18 national and state accreditations, and these significant accomplishments are a source of pride within BSO's ranks.
I am proud of our accomplishments and successes over the past four years. We will continue to push toward excellence and never become complacent in our responsibility to provide the best in public safety to this community.
