Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This new technology is available at both Cleveland Clinic Florida’s academic medical center in Weston, as well as the West Palm Beach location. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” says
The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy (tissue
sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. he American tradition of summer camp goes back many years. The precursors to today’s camps were born during the turn of the 19th century as part of a “back to nature” cultural movement. n March 20th, Byron Jaffe took the official oath of office, becoming Weston’s newest City Commissioner. He represents City Commission Seat 3. Mayor Daniel Stermer says he looks forward to working with Mr. Jaffe as a member of the Weston City Commission. “His leadership, professionalism and passion for the Weston community will serve us all well as we work together to ensure Weston’s continued success.” Although new to politics, Jaffe has always been committed to serving the Weston community. During his 26 years as a Weston resident, he has served as President of the Hibiscus Island Homeowners Association, a Board of Director for the Weston Homeowners Association, member of the Weston Coalition for School Improvement, and Board of Director for Temple B’nai Aviv. Jaffe has also served on the Broward Metropolitan Planning Advisory Committee and on the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Federal Noise Study Committee. He is a commercial airline pilot, who has flown domestic and international routes for American Airlines since 1985. Jaffe won City Commission Seat 3 in the March special municipal election, with 70% of the vote. The Weston City Commission is comprised of five members: the Mayor and four Commissioners. Commission Seat 2, represented by Commissioner Kallman, includes the neighborhoods of The Palms, The Ridges, Country Isles, Windmill Ranch Estates, Windmill Ranch Lakes, Windmill Reserve and others. As commissioner for Seat 3, Jaffe represents neighborhoods such as The Islands, The Lakes, The Landings, The Falls, Emerald Isle and others. Commissioner Feuer represents the Bonaventure community in Commission Seat 4. The next municipal election in Weston will be in November 2018 when Commissioner Feuer’s and Commissioner Jaffe’s seats expire. Jaffe’s term is filling a vacancy created when former Commissioner Norton resigned.

New Bicycle Detection System Being Tested In Weston COMMUNITY NEWS

ith nearly 50 miles of paved bike lanes, it’s obvious that Weston is a bicycle friendly community. It was designated as such by The League of American Bicyclists. So, it’s not surprising that the Broward County Traffic Engineering Division selected Weston as one of the cities in which to test a new enhanced bicycle detection system. “Weston has a very comprehensive bike lane network, and we have a very good working relationship with City staff, so we thought Weston would be a good place to undertake this kind of pilot program,” states Scott Brunner, P.E., Broward Traffic Engineering Department Director. Currently, the enhanced bike detection system has been installed at two Weston intersections along Saddle Club Road, at Royal Palm Boulevard/Glades Parkway (all directions) and at Indian Trace (north and south directions only). Brunner says they are looking at several other potential intersections in Weston, and will decide where to go next based on what they observe at the two Saddle Club intersections. Brunner says the purpose of this pilot program is three-fold: to evaluate the capabilities of the enhanced bicycle detection system, specifically regarding its ability to detect cyclists in both designated bike lanes and mixed-vehicle traffic lanes; to introduce motorists and cyclists to seeing bicycle signals at intersections; and to test signal sequencing and phasing which can give bicyclists an early start across an intersection, or even their own phase, like pedestrians.

Motorists and cyclists need to pay attention to the new signals. “The bike signal indication is literally an illuminated stick-figure version of a bicycle symbol, as opposed to an illuminated circle or arrow,” explains Brunner. During the initial phase of this pilot program, Brunner says the bicycle signals will operate concurrently with the adjacent vehicle signal indications. “In other words, when the adjacent through vehicle lanes get the green, the adjacent bike lane will also get the green at the same time.” After the preliminary test period, which should last several months, Brunner says they may slowly start introducing special phasing for the bike lanes where bicyclists may get an advance green light for several seconds before the adjacent vehicle lanes get the green. “If everything goes according to plan, we may even be able to work with the City to define certain hours on the weekend where bikes have a little more priority.” Although this first phase may not be very dramatic, Brunner says it’s important for motorists and cyclists to be aware. “Once the community gets used to seeing the traffic signals, and we are satisfied with how things are operating technically, we will then start to introduce more interesting things to make cycling safer for everyone. This is the very first step in a much larger vision to improve the safety and efficiency of the bicycle mode throughout the Weston community, and Broward County as a whole.”

Student Artist Showcase Winners Announced COMMUNITY NEWS

ongratulations to the winners of the Arts Council of Greater Weston’s 10th annual Student Artist Showcase. More than 200 pieces of original artwork were on display throughout the month of April at the Weston Branch Library, featuring work by students from kindergarten through high school. A panel of art and education professionals evaluated the artwork based on originality, creativity, reflection, visual perspective and technique and awarded prizes. he Sagemont School invites the Weston community to enjoy an afternoon of art and musical entertainment as the school hosts its second annual Sagemont Arts Festival on Saturday, May 13th. The program showcases the incredible talent of students enrolled in the school’s award winning visual and performing arts programs. “Sagemont would like to promote a cultural arts connection between students and the community they live in, while at the same time increasing awareness for the many opportunities which Sagemont provides for students in the fine and performing arts,” states Fine Arts Instructional Team Leader Elizabeth Garrard. Sagemont Music Instructor Matthew Goldberg says the Concert Band will lead off the festival, followed by select vocal, guitar and keyboard performances. “Closing out the program will be a full-on rock-n-roll concert by the Sagemont Synergy Rock Band featuring music from Bon Jovi, Adele, Led Zeppelin, Journey, Andra Day, Van Halen and more.” Sagemont’s award-winning thespian program will also be highlighted through various drama performances, including scenes from the musical Chicago. Ms. Garrard, who is the school’s theater teacher, says the audience is in for a treat. “Sagemont students have been nominated for over 50 Cappies Awards in multiple areas of creativity including both performance and design.”

The work of Sagemont’s outstand fine arts students will be featured as well in the student art gallery, which will be spread out throughout the school. In the classrooms, there will be 2-D paper work, stretched canvas and mixed media pieces, while 3-D stained glass work will be on display in the school’s garden. Arts Festival patrons will get a chance to express their own creativity at the Mother’s Day crafting station making tissue paper flowers and cards. Guests will also have the opportunity to take home artwork created by high school art
instructor Darcy Hildebidle. She has three paintings up for auction, with proceeds supporting the school’s fine and performing arts resources. Children will love the balloon art and face painting, while all ages will enjoy the food truck takeover. iving in South Florida, we all know the risks of planning an outdoor event. You never know when an unexpected rain shower might pop up. That’s exactly what happened on the night of the Symphony of the Americas’ Pops Concert at Weston Town Center, when just moments before the concert was to start the sky literally opened up. Musicians and concert-goers scattered for cover during the downpour. With the storm safely passed, Mayor Daniel Stermer joined Weston Philharmonic Society volunteers in drying off the seats so the show could go on. And what a show it was. The Symphony of the Americas Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, received a standing ovation for their performance of a medley from My Fair Lady including “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “On the Street Where You Live”, the theme from Star Wars, and hits by Whitney Houston and Cole Porter. Despite the rain, an audience of all ages enjoyed the show. Weston Philharmonic Society Co-President Andrea Burghardt commented, “It was so great to see families, seniors, teens, everyone assembled to hear fine music, the universal language!” Co-President Lou Marett says the Weston Philharmonic Society is appreciative of the support it gets from the City of Weston. “It is highly gratifying to live in
a community that has residents, volunteers and our elected officials united to promote the arts. In our case, that means fine music of all genres. It is one of the things that helps Weston regularly make Top 10 lists of places to reside.” Mayor Daniel Stermer commended the Weston Philharmonic Society for its commitment to bringing music to Weston residents and schools since 2002. “The ability to provide a free concert performance of this magnitude for our residents, included in our annual performing arts series, is simply wonderful. Despite a little liquid sunshine before the start of the performance, concert-goers were steadfast and treated to another world-class performance right in the heart of our city.” This free outdoor concert was one of several concerts presented each year here in Weston by the Symphony of the Americas. In February, the orchestra performed Fiery Romances on the Big Screen, which featured the full symphony orchestra accompanied by the world-famous keyboard duo, Dunlap and Pennington. Oversized video screens projected close-ups of the musicians, allowing the audience to marvel at the keyboardists’ amazing finger work. In July, select members of the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra will return to Weston, along with noted international musicians. The Summerfest concert is scheduled for July 19th at Temple Dor Dorim. The free outdoor pops concert was presented by the City of Weston, Weston Philharmonic Society and Weston Town Center, in partnership with the Arts Council of Greater Weston.

Weston University Program Focuses on Finance COMMUNITY NEWS

T
he Weston University program curriculum concluded with a lesson in fiscal responsibility. The final program day focused on local government finance and budgeting. Weston Budget Director Bryan Cahen began by speaking to students about Weston’s budget process. He explained how the budget is managed and approved by the City Commission each fiscal year, with input from residents. In addition, Cindy Tao, the City’s Accounting Manager, explained her department’s role. After the lesson on expenses, revenue sources and the fiscal year process, the students selected their roles for the City Commission Simulation. For this culminating activity to the Weston University program, each student plays a role in a mock City Commission meeting. Some students will take on the responsibilities of the Mayor and City Commissioners, while others will play the parts of various City Department leaders or the Police and Fire Chief. Weston’s Director of Communications and Weston University Program Director Denise Barrett-Miller led a comprehensive review of the simulation agenda and took the students through each item and how their roles will play out during the meeting. “Utilizing what
they have learned over the past six months, during the mock City Commission meeting students will actually debate and vote on real items brought before the Weston City Commissioners in years’ past.” The final Weston University program day also included some bonding time, with students applying City of Weston temporary tattoos and throwing around a football and frisbee. Weston University is a one-of-a-kind program providing a unique civic education to high school students. Once a month, participating students spend time interacting with city leaders and participating in hands-on activities while exploring the various departments and agencies that make up our local government. It is open to Weston students attending Cypress Bay High School, The Sagemont School, Western High School, as well as home schooled students. he Rotary Club of Weston’s 30th annual WestonLawyers.com Golf Classic along with a raffle and silent and live auctions. was one for the record book. This year’s Rotary Golf Classic welcomed 184 golfers and raised $135,000 for scholarships. For the past 30 years, the Weston Rotary has been presenting scholarships to deserving students through funds raised from this tournament. To date, the club has given out more than $1.25 million in scholarships to graduating seniors from Cypress Bay and Western high schools, as well as The Sagemont School and HANDY. “We are very proud that the 30th annual WestonLawyers.com Golf Classic was such a huge success,” states Golf Committee Chair Keith Petron. “This will enable us to send many local high school seniors to college. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. How to Avoid Home Sale Trouble with Fixtures
D
uring this peak home sale season, when thousands of properties change hands, buyers and sellers need to be aware of what is legally included and excluded from the sale. A “fixture” is moveable personal property, which has been converted to real property by means of bolts, nails, screws, cement, glue or another attachment method. For example, a chandelier has been converted from personal to real property because of the permanent attachment to the structure. Suppose a house has beautiful draperies and attached wood window blinds. Those draperies hang by hooks from a drapery rod that is screwed to the wall. The law of fixtures says the draperies are personal property because they can be easily removed without damage. The drapery rods and the wood window blinds are fixtures included in the home sale since they are permanently attached. Remove it if you do not want it included in the sale. Posting notes on items or in property brochures saying “Item not included in the sale” is like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Unless the item is junk, the buyer will then insist on receiving that fixture as part of the home purchase price. A better approach is to have the seller remove the item before exposure to buyers and installing a tasteful replacement. A favorite fixture story happened a few years ago with a large house and beautiful flowering garden. After the sale closed, the buyer was shocked to see all of the flowering plants were gone. Plants and trees growing in the ground are considered to be fixtures because they are permanently attached to the land by roots. Because the flowering plants were in large pots, the seller was legally entitled to remove them since they were not permanently attached to the real property. Avoid fixture trouble with a well written contract. There are four legal rules to keep in mind if a fixture dispute goes to court: 1. Attachment – The most important fixture rule is the method of attachment. If an item can be removed without damage to the structure, it is not a fixture. Examples include unscrewing LED light bulbs or unplugging a refrigerator because both are personal property. 2. Intent – When the Multiple Listing Service states “beautiful kitchen with the latest appliances,” that implies the seller intends to include those appliances and the buyer can rely on that statement. 3. Adaptability to property use – A seller had built-in wiring for the stereo speakers for surround sound. The seller unplugged the speakers and stereo system and the Buyer had to buy new components. 4. Agreement of parties – A written contract that lists a specific item, whether it is a fixture or personal property, usually prevails to make it included in the sales price. T
here is a new face on the Weston City Commission. Elected in a Special Election on March 14th, Byron L. Jaffe is Weston’s newest City Commissioner and we welcome him to the dais. No stranger to Weston, Commissioner Jaffe has a long history of community involvement and leadership including serving on the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Fort Lauderdale Airport Noise Study Committee, and the Hibiscus Island Maintenance Association. We look forward to his experience, ideas, and commitment to maintaining our City as one of the premier places to live in the United States. A large measure of what makes Weston a premier hometown for families is our recreation facilities and our commitment to infrastructure and incorporating new ideas, services, or products. I encourage residents to visit Tequesta Trace Park and view the newly completed installation of two multi-purpose artificial turf athletic fields. It is important to note that the infill on all artificial turf installations in the City is comprised of organic materials which are not only safe, but drastically reduce the temperature of the surface while maintaining a green standard. There are numerous benefits to artificial turf, particularly for fields with heavy use. Artificial turf can be played on during wet conditions; requires far less maintenance than grass; will not develop holes and divots; and provides for year-round use. The fields will be used mainly for football, lacrosse, and rugby as well as the sports programs at Tequesta Trace Middle School. We can already hear a welcome sigh of relief from the participants in Weston sports leagues and programs. City staff are well into the budget process for Fiscal Year 2018, including scheduling Commission Workshops as needed. Budgets for the City of Weston, the Indian Trace Development District and the Bonaventure Development District run October 1st through September 30th of each year. The City Manager’s Proposed Budgets will be reviewed and discussed many times over in the months leading up to their adoption in September. The Budget is the single most important determination the City Commission votes on each year, which impacts every property owner in our City. We highly respect this fiscal responsibility and do not take it lightly. As a Commission, we will seek to balance quality of life, infrastructure and public safety needs along with additional factors into a budget which provides the best balance for Weston. We encourage and look forward to your input at our public hearings once they are established for September. As students wrap up another school year, we congratulate those moving up or graduating and wish everyone a safe and fun-filled summer. Oftentimes it is a challenge to keep children and teens entertained during the summer break. Many pass the time at summer camp, on vacation or relaxing poolside. Here in Weston, the Weston YMCA, the Weston Tennis Center, and numerous other facilities offer a variety of program options. If you’re headed out of town, we suggest the BSO Home Watch Program. ehicles made by 19 different automakers have been recalled to replace frontal airbags on the driver’s side or passenger’s side, or both, in what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has called “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history.” The airbags, made by major parts supplier Takata, were mostly installed in cars from model year 2002 through 2015. Some of those airbags could deploy explosively, injuring or even killing car occupants. At the heart of the problem is the airbag’s inflator, a metal cartridge loaded with propellant wafers, which in some cases has ignited with explosive force. If the inflator housing ruptures in a crash, metal shards from the airbag can be sprayed throughout the passenger cabin—a potentially disastrous outcome from a supposedly life-saving device. Through various announcements, the recall has tripled in size over the past year. It is expected that the inflator recall will impact more than 42 million vehicles in the United States, with the total number of airbags being between 65 and 70 million. Eleven fatalities and more than 100 injuries have been linked to the Takata airbags. In June of 2015, Takata stated that it was aware of 88 ruptures in total: 67 on the driver’s side and 21 on the passenger’s side out of what it calculated was just over 1.2 million airbag deployments spread over 15 years. Despite these figures, airbags in general are not a danger. The Department of Transportation estimates that between 1987 and 2012, frontal airbags have saved 37,000 lives. Based on information provided by Takata, the involved automakers are responding to this safety risk by recalling all vehicles that have these specific airbags. While the automakers are prioritizing resources by focusing on highhumidity areas, they shouldn’t stop there. We encourage a national approach to the risks, as vehicles tend to travel across state borders, especially in the used-car market. The Takata inflators seem to be vulnerable to persistent high humidity and high temperature conditions, such as in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, the Gulf Coast states, Hawaii, and island territories. There are several ways to check whether your specific car is affected. You’ll need your vehicle identification number, VIN, found in the lower driverside corner of the windshield (observable from outside the vehicle), as well as on your registration and insurance documents. Punch that number into NHTSA’s online VIN-lookup tool. If your vehicle is affected, the site will tell you so. NHTSA also has a list of vehicles available for a quick review, and the manufacturers have ownership sections on their websites for such information. You can also call any franchised dealer for your car brand. All recalls, by definition, are concerned with safety and should be treated seriously. As with all recalls, we recommend having the work performed as soon as parts are available and the service can be scheduled. All recall work must be performed at a franchised dealership. ay is an exciting time for many teens across Broward County. Graduations, proms, and celebrations are among some of the most anticipated events. While this season offers many memorable moments for teens, it may also include poor decision making behind the wheel, such as speeding, distracted driving, driving during prohibited hours, impaired driving, etc. When it comes to poor decision making while driving, teens are less likely than adults to understand the risks because they lack experience. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that from 20122014, traffic crashes were the number one cause of death for people ages 16-24. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2014, 2,270 teens ages 16-19 were killed in motor vehicle crashes in the United States. According to an American Automobile Association crash analysis, seven of the top ten deadliest days for teens on the roads occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day. While this should be a season of celebration, it is also a season when parents are encouraged to educate their teens and provide them with the guidance necessary to ensure they practice safe driving behaviors. This is critically important to help teens develop as responsible drivers and ensure their safety as well as those of passengers and pedestrians. To help guide teens into a safe graduation and summer season (and beyond), parents are encouraged to review Florida’s GDL laws with their teens. These laws highlight the restrictions on driving times and passenger requirements for drivers ages 16-17. Drivers age 16 may drive between the hours of 6am and 11pm; drivers age 17 may drive between the hours of 5am and 1am. Any other time, 16-17 year-old drivers must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old occupying the closest seat to the right of the driver, or be traveling to or from work. Parents may also consider the following safety tips to keep their teen safe on the road during this celebratory season: ▸▸ Avoid driving – consider renting a limo or seeking other means of chauffeured travel. ▸▸ Do not drink and drive – although teens are not of legal drinking age, they are encouraged not to drink and drive as increases in peer pressure may arise. ▸▸ Do not be the passenger in a vehicle with an intoxicated driver – have a backup plan. ▸▸ Always wear your seatbelt – seat belts save lives. Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal and critical injury by up to 50%. ▸▸ Do not drive distracted – do not use your cell phone or other mobile devices while driving. A NHTSA and Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study revealed that 80% of traffic crashes involve some type of driver distraction. ▸▸ Do not text and drive – studies show the impairment of a driver who is texting to be as much as a driver at the illegal drinking limit of a .08 blood alcohol concentration. ▸▸ Disable calls and notifications – consider using applications that encourage safe, distraction free driving like DriveAssist, cell CONTROL, etc., or consider turning your phone off until you reach your destination. ▸▸ Obey speed limits – speed is one of the leading causes of traffic crashes. lthough only nine-years-old, Jayda Washington-Boothe is already shaping the computer technology of tomorrow. The third-grade honor roll student from Manatee Bay Elementary School was invited to be a member of the Kids Panel at WordPCamp Miami 2017, a conference for users of WordPress (software used to build websites). According to the WordPCamp Miami program, the Kids Panel was put together because “it’s vital for current WordPress users, developers, and product makers to know what the next generation is using. When it comes to technology, you don’t adapt – you die. And getting an insight to how youth is publishing on the web is one way to figure that out.” Jayda says she uses WorldPress to talk about her hobbies, pictures, and what it is like to be a girl who likes STEM and coding. She has been coding since kindergarten using ScratchPad, Code, and Office365’s SWAY to build structures for Minecraft. She credits her teachers for getting her interested in coding. “My teachers at Manatee Bay make it so much fun, especially Mrs. Fijikowski and Mrs. Hepworth, so I really got into it.” Jayda believes it is important for young students like herself to become computer literate. She acknowledges it has helped her become a better student. “Being active with coding, tech-
nology, and other activities has helped me work hard to keep my grades up. I cannot do extra activities unless I make A’s and B’s in school and have good citizenship in class.” Jayda participates in two STEM-focused enrichment programs. She is a member of the Manatee Bay STEM Club and the Miami Chapter of Black Girls Code. “Black Girls Code teaches girls how to code, build websites, and program robots,” explains Jayda. “It shows girls that you can do any of these things if you put your mind to it.” It was during a Black Girls Code workshop that she met computer programmer Lenora Porter, who arranged for Jayda to speak at the WordPress Miami conference. As a member of the Kids Panel, Jayda says she spoke about WordPress, why she likes coding, STEM and who has influenced her to get into coding. She shared that she would like to see more kids doing tech and publishing in the future. Jayda’s interests extend beyond computer coding and web publishing. She is also a member of the Manatee Bay Elementary Chorus and Manatee Bay Chess Club. Her extracurricular activities include running track and field, dancing, and participating in the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. Jayda also volunteers for The Faith Center Ministries' “Dare to Care” and youth department.

ixth grade students at Imagine Charter School at Weston were pleasantly surprised when a letter came from the White House. As part of an English Language Arts lesson last fall, Jennifer Bucker tasked her students with writing a letter to President Obama addressing issues of concern to themselves and their generaIsabella Zavaleta tion such as global warming, and Mrs. Bucker immigration, endangered pose with the letter from animals, space exploration, President Obama. and equal rights. “As a young child, I wrote a letter to President Carter and I received a response. I have a vivid memory of reading the envelope’s return address – The White House. It was so exciting and the memory has stayed with me all these years,” shares Mrs. Bucker. She thought having her students write to the President would be an exciting, outside the box lesson connecting the real world with English Language Standards. This assignment reinforced grammar, higher level vocabulary, citations of textual evidence, and professional letter writing skills. “This letter writing lesson stimulated fantastic class discussions, from mechanics of grammar to world politics,” notes Mrs. Bucker. “Students were engaged, inquisitive, and thoughtful. Hearing their opinions regarding real world issues or ‘hot topics’ of today was quite extraordinary.” President Obama was obviously impressed with what some of the Imagine
students had to say. He wrote personal letters in response to two of the students’ letters. Mikie Green says he wrote to the President about endangered birds and how it is important to protect them. “The President responded that by controlling climate change and clean energy, we will be able to better protect our environment. He also told me about the Endangered Species Act Mikie Green and and how it has saved bears, Mrs. Bucker proudly display President turtles and manatees.” Obama’s letter. Isabella Zavaleta wrote to President Obama about her concerns for world hunger, homelessness and access to clean water. His response opened her mind to new ideas. “I wrote about defunding the space program and the President politely disagreed with me. He said we need it because it effects more issues like clean water. His explanation changed my point of view and helped me better understand its importance.” The President concluded his personal letter to Isabella with some words of encouragement: “It sounds like you are a bright young woman with a good head on her shoulders. I encourage you to continue studying hard and thinking of others – I am confident that if you do, you can help shape the better world we both know is possible.” President Obama also wrote to Mrs. Bucker’s class. In addition to thanking the students for writing and encouraging them to dream big and work hard, he enclosed pictures of the First Family, First Dogs, and a White House fact sheet.

Dr. Samira Alempour moved to South Florida when she was 13 years old and has lived here ever since. She speaks English, Spanish, and Farsi. She is a published author and a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. Dr. Alempour obtained her Dental Degree from Nova Southeastern University, where she continued on and earned her Degree in Pediatric Dentistry (specializing in the oral healthcare of infants, children, teens, and patients with special needs). She currently lives in Weston with her husband, Robert; 4 1/2-year-old son, Riad; and 3-year-old daughter, Ayla.

ate, Dr. Marcela Solarte, joined the practice in November 2016. She grew up in Weston and obtained her undergraduate and dental degrees from University of Florida. She graduated from NYU Langone Lutheran Medical Center for her specialty degree. She loves dogs and enjoys cooking and traveling.
What can patients expect when they visit the office? We treat each child as if they were

Do you offer sedation dentistry? For chil-
dren that have dental anxiety, we offer different types of sedation techniques to help them have a more pleasant dental visit. These techniques include nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation, which is administered by a pediatric anesthesiologist. We employ the safest and most effective sedation standards by following the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
At what age should parents bring their children for the first time? One year of age
is the ideal time to bring in your child for their first dental visit to establish a dental home, as is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Visits are complimentary for children under the age of two.
What are some ways to help prevent tooth decay? We advise patients to eat a healthy diet
and maintain good daily oral hygiene. Using fluoride toothpaste routinely will help to minimize the development of cavities and can even slow down the progression. Also, reducing or eliminating juice and sweet drinks, such as chocolate milk, and sticky snacks, such as gummies, will help to keep the protective enamel layer strong.
What is your advice on flossing? Parents
should start flossing their children’s teeth at a very young age to prevent the cavities that develop in between teeth. Spacing can vary from child to child, but flossing must sometimes be started as young as two to three years of age.
Why is it important to bring children for early dental visits? Early dental visits create
the concept of a dental home, where young patients can learn to trust their pediatric dentist and staff. This helps to create familiar and comfortable dental visits. Also, early visits help detect cavities when they are small and more manageable and therefore much easier to treat. Another great benefit of early dental visits is to ensure that patients are brushing well and
taking all the correct measures to prevent early childhood decay.
At what age should children start brushing their teeth? The best time to start brushing is
when the first primary tooth erupts to ensure good oral health for all of the years to come. We offer special infant toothbrushes with unique handles to our patients for creating safe and healthy brushing habits from an early age.

Indian Trace Students Jump For Heart Health BY STACEY BOMSER

S
tudents at Indian Trace Elementary School were jumping for joy when they found out they exceeded their goal for the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser. The school collected $8154.39 in donations. Coach Mark Logsdon has been coordinating the Jump Rope For Heart event at the school for more than 15 years. The physical education instructor started the program at Indian Trace to teach students the importance of exercise in promoting heart health. “Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. I’ve lost too many family members and friends to heart disease,” explains Coach Mark. “I want to make sure the students understand that they

can help prevent this disease through daily exercise and healthy eating. It’s all about a healthy lifestyle.” That message was not lost on third grader Ysa Yacinth. “I think it’s fun! It helps my family because I tell them what I learn about healthy eating.” Second grader Martin Calderon likes the physical benefits. “We get exercise to make us strong and grow a lot.” Students also appreciate how their donations to Jump Rope For Heart are helping others. “It is really good to help people and save their lives,” says second grader Hudson Berger. Over the years, Indian Trace students have helped many people. The school has raised more than
$100,000 since it started participating in Jump Rope For Heart. As an incentive to support this year’s fundraiser, Coach Mark and Principal Amy Winder will take a “mud bath.” Students who donated more than $100 will participate in the messy moment. Jump Rope For Heart is a national education and fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association. Dollars raised through Jump Rope For Heart give back to children, communities and schools through American Heart Association programs such as advocating at federal and state levels for physical education and nutrition wellness in schools, offering CPR training courses in school, and funding research to discover new treatments.

It’s Not a Myth. Your Body Needs A Good Night’s Sleep BY JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
I
f you are putting in the work at the gym every day, eating healthy, and still not seeing the weight loss results you want or a change in your energy levels, lack of sleep may be the culprit. Did you know that an estimated 30% of American adults reported sleeping less than six hours a night? What’s more alarming is that people continue to put sleep in the back burner in order to keep up with the demands of a hectic, technology-driven society when the total opposite should be happening—sleep needs to be at the top of your to-do list! The human body needs sleep as much as it needs to breathe to function properly, because recovery is crucial. While you are sleeping, heart rate and blood pressure slow down to give your heart a much needed break; one single night of sleep deprivation can cause your blood pressure to skyrocket the next day. And because sleep is vital, it also affects hormone production and may be the reason your weight loss efforts have stalled. Several studies have shown a link between sleep deprivation and an increased risk of obesity and diabetes. Why? Well, let’s consider the “hunger” hormones leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is the hormone that decreases your appetite by notifying your brain that you’ve had enough food and have an energy balance. Ghrelin is the hormone that stimulates your appetite, usually increasing before a meal and decreasing right after. Ghrelin is also released by your body when you are under stress, thus making you want to reach for unneeded snacks. Consider what happens to your body when you are sleep deprived - you are irritable and feel tired; you have trouble making decisions and solving problems; you can’t focus; you are more easily confused and more likely to get sick. Essentially, your body is under stress and your ghrelin levels rise. Scientific studies have found that subjects who were sleep deprived experienced declines in leptin levels and an increase in ghrelin, which in turn increased their hunger, appetite and the cravings for high carbohydrate foods. A study also found that, following sleep loss, a group of healthy individuals started showing blood sugar and insulin levels similar to those seeing in people developing diabetes. Whether it is for weight loss purposes or to simply improve your quality of life, sleep must become a priority. he old adage “you are what you eat” is especially true when it comes to your skin. Patients are often unaware of the fact that the skin is the largest organ in the body. As such, we need to make appropriate dietary choices to enhance the appearance of our skin. The same way we choose heart-healthy foods and liver cleansing diets. It has been shown that midlife women with the most youthful looking skin also have the most Vitamin C in their diets. Vitamin C is essential for the cross-linking, or building of collagen, the support structure that keeps your skin’s surface smooth. Young-looking women also tend to eat less saturated fat and fewer carbohydrates, and have higher levels of linoleic acid, an Omega-6 fatty acid found mainly in nuts and dark, leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale. Ellagic acid, found primarily in pomegranates and red berries, is another wrinkle-fighter. This compound has also been known to reduce inflammation from sun damage exposure and reduces collagen breakdown. Other foods that have been shown to improve the appearance of the skin include salmon, particularly the wild caught variety like King, Sockeye, and Coho Salmon, often seasonably available. I would discourage one from eating the farm-raised variety, as the mercury levels may be high unless it comes from an organic fishery. Salmon not only contains high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids beneficial to your skin and heart, but also astaxanthin, a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity. Green tea provides anti-aging plant polyphenols that may help your skin when you drink it and apply it topically. Egg yolks, avocados, lentils, chickpeas and beans (including soybeans) all fight dryness in the skin. Other antioxidants, such as goji berries and acai berries found in juices and supplements, enable your body to fight inflammation causing free radicals which are generated as a result of sun damage. In addition to the foods I have mentioned, plant sterols are beneficial not only to your skin, but also help lower LDL cholesterol. Sterols are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans. These substances limit your body’s ability to absorb cholesterol from food. Plastic surgery can dramatically enhance the appearance of your skin through laser or chemical resurfacing, skin excision or injectable therapy, but to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth, consuming essential nutrients through your diet may be just as beneficial over the long term. Everyone Is a Winner at Gator Run Elementary Special Olympics

A
fter months of training, the athletes were all at their prime for the Gator Run Elementary School Special Olympics. It was the culminating activity for the Young Athletes Program; a chance for students in the pre-kindergarten classes to showcase their skills. “During the year, the children in the pre-K classes worked on various gross motor skills, with the assistance of a peer buddy in third grade,” states Pre-K ESE Teacher Debbie Saul. “The kids worked on balancing, walking, running, jumping, throwing, kicking and striking a ball. During our culminating activity, we focused on walking a balance beam, kicking a ball between two cones, jumping from hoop to hoop, throwing beanbags into hoops, and golf. We ended it with a giant limbo line.” There were no winners in the Gator Run Special Olympics, but there was a medal ceremony for completion. Mrs. Saul says all the students, both the pre-K athletes and their third-grade buddies, were winners. “They all learned to make a difference in each other’s lives.”

She says the third graders learned to be role models. “They learned how to talk to younger children and learned to put themselves second to their partner’s needs.” Through the Young Athletes Program, Mrs. Saul says the pre-K students learned motor skills. “They also learned to communicate with others and they learned how to cooperate and wait their turn.” She says this program taught students much more than they will ever learn in the classroom. “In life, not everybody is born the same, acts the same or is exposed to the same things. Children need to learn tolerance and patience and need to learn to realize how others think and feel,” explains Mrs. Saul. “The Young Athletes Program did just that for all involved. The pre-K students developed a big brother/big sister friendship within the school setting. Their faces light up when they see their buddy. I feel like this program helped the kids develop as a whole child.” The Young Athletes program is an innovative sports play program for children ages two to seven with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities and their peers, designed to introduce them into the world of sports. It is sponsored by Special Olympics.

t’s been five years since Manatee Bay Elementary School opened its Intellectual Disability (InD) Cluster. To this day, it remains the only school in Weston to offer such a program for students with severe cognitive disabilities. According to Kristina Podsada, kindergarten and first grade InD teacher, “The InD Cluster at Manatee Bay has doubled in size since first opening in 2012. We started with just two classes and now have four classes. With each year, we have added participation in more school programs and offered more assistance to parents by way of Parent Enrichment Nights.” As the InD Cluster program has grown and developed, it has strived to promote inclusiveness within the school. “InD is a regular part of the school culture at Manatee Bay,” notes Ms. Podsada. “We are just one of the many parts of the whole that is Manatee Bay.” She says the InD students are integrated at different levels, some more extensively than others. All Cluster students participate in Specials with a regular education class. Other opportunities for inclusion include during lunchtime, Field Day, holiday events, Book Buddies, Meet the Masters, and other school events. Through the Bay Buddies program, select fourth and fifth grade students join

Cluster students to share time and give assistance. “Some of these students help during arrival when guidance may be needed to unpack book bags,” explains Ms. Podsada. “Other Bay Buddies come during their recess time to share Circle Time or Story Time.” Another activity InD Cluster students look forward to is the weekly Special Olympics. It’s the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. “At Manatee Bay, students practice athletic skills weekly and we have a culminating final event in April to show parents how the children have grown physically and emotionally,” says Ms. Podsada. “Students cheer each other on and congratulate each other for their efforts.” There will be big cheers when the fifth grade InD students take part in the school’s moving-up activities in June. “The idea is that our students are part of a whole. This is what we strive for daily. They will participate in and move-up with the Class of 2017 on stage at the Fifth Grade Awards Ceremony,” states Ms. Podsada. “In addition, at the end of the school year we have a Parents Day Event for all the InD Cluster classrooms to showcase student abilities and progress.”

Cypress Bay’s Literary Fair Honors Creative Students SCHOOL NEWS

H
aiku poem, short story and fable were a just a few of the categories of Cypress Bay High School’s Literary Fair. Literary Fair coordinator and English teacher Hope Fisher said the English teachers received several hundreds of submissions, and 41 entries were selected as winners for the school-wide competition. “Cypress Bay participates in the Literary Fair to showcase student writing,” Mrs. Fisher said. “Students are fortunate to have a platform to demonstrate their creativity and skill as a writer.” English teachers of all grades volunteered to choose the winners for the schoolwide competition. They used the Broward County Literary Fair guidelines to judge the winners and narrow down the selections. English teachers were also asked to encourage their students to participate in at least one category of the Literary Fair. “I thought that all the entries were amazing and really showcased the talented students here at the Bay,” English teacher Julie Klitzner, who assisted Mrs. Fisher in organizing the Literary Fair, said. “Many of the entries were outstanding [and] really written with a higher level of vocabulary, description and creativity.” At the ceremony, Mrs. Fisher announced the top three placing students in each category. Additionally, five students performed their winning pieces for the attendants. “It was really exciting and accomplishing [to win] because I’ve never won an award like this before,” senior Isabella Hardesty said. Hardesty won first place for her spoken word poem called “Mamá,” which she performed at the ceremony. Junior Payton Liberto received four awards at the Literary Fair ceremony: first place for Free Verse poem, Villanelle poem and Haiku poem and second place for Ekphrastic poem. Liberto also performed her Free Verse poem titled “When the Mighty Fall” at the ceremony. “I really like writing, and poetry means a lot to me,” Liberto said. “My Free Verse poem is my favorite poem I’ve ever written. It means a lot to me because I wrote it

when I was not in a really good place, and writing that really helped me get through it.” The first-place winners of each category from the school-wide competition will move on to the Broward County Schools District Literary Fair, which will take place on May 17 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Amaturo Theater. “I think we have a good chance of winning a few categories,” Mrs. Klitzner said. “It is important for [the] Bay to be represented in [Broward] school board events since we are the best high school in the county.” Jessie Chaiet is a sophomore at Cypress Bay High School. Sagemont School Fourth Graders Recognize Women’s History Month SCHOOL NEWS

iana Summermatter’s fourth grade class at The Sagemont School was visited by some famous faces. In recognition of Women’s History Month, students read biographies about influential females and then presented their findings

In all, 26 different women were represented including author J.K. Rowling, Nobel Prize recipient and activist for female education Malala, NASA physicist and mathematician Katherine Johnson, CEO of Pepsi Co. Indra Nooyi, sharpshooter Annie Oakley, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and Olympic gold medal soc-
cer player Alex Morgan. For this project, students had to read a biography about their chosen person, detailing important information about her life, when and where she lived, and why she was influential. Students then had to prepare a presentation for the class. Mrs. Summermatter says she gave her students creative freedom on choosing what format they wanted to use for the presentation. “Students were given several options including creating a video, performing a puppet show, doing a radio or television advertisement, or becoming the character. Giving the students different ways to present the information allowed for their creativity to come through.” She believes hands-on learning like this is more effective than traditional biography book reports. “This project allowed students to integrate things they love, like dressing up, playing with technology, drawing and performing. The students are not the same. The people they are presenting are not the same. So, the way the information is presented does not need to be the same.” Additionally, Mrs. Summermatter says this project allowed students to learn about multiple people in a way that is not monotonous. “They overwhelmingly enjoyed doing their presentations and watching the presentations of others. Several students noted that it was fascinating to learn about all of the famous women who have lived and live currently.”

hat is a “pinched nerve”? It’s the name given to the uncomfortable sensation, pain, or numbness caused when increased pressure leads to irritation or damage to a peripheral nerve. Although almost any nerve is susceptible, this condition is most often associated with back pain or a neck injury. Biomechanics... As we walk, move, twist and bend the joints of the spine allow normal spinal motion to occur. Spinal joints sometimes lose their correct movement patterns as a result of trauma, postural faults or repetitive stress that cause the spine to become malaligned. When a mechanical structure is not aligned correctly, normal function is not possible. These changes in spinal alignment and joint motion can alter the shape of the foramen through which the spinal nerves pass. This can cause an increase in pressure to the contents of the foramen, either directly (the so-called “pinch”), or more commonly by irritating the contents, producing inflammation. Source of the Pain...Except in cases of severe trauma or advanced spinal degenerative change, it is extremely rare that the nerves passing through the foramen become “pinched” to the extent the compression itself is pain-producing. Pain is almost always the result of: ▸▸ abnormal mechanical stress on spinal discs ▸▸ irritated joint capsules ▸▸ increased mechanical stress on ligaments ▸▸ muscle irritation or spasm Small increases in pressure on spinal nerves, though not usually pain-producing, have been shown to adversely effect nerve function. This may be the real danger of “pinched nerves”, for the result is a gradual, silent deterioration in the ability of the brain and central nervous system to keep every part of your body working optimally. Treatment...Clearly, “pinched nerves”, whether themselves the source of pain or not, can have serious health consequences. ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment. Carlo A. here is no doubt that the average age of orthodontic patient has lowered through the years. Just open a yearbook from the 50’s and 60’s and you will see many young adults wearing the stereotypical “train tracks” across their teeth. Movies have spoofed the usage of head gears during the high school years, which was common practice in that era. Braces have become smaller, sleeker, more colorful, and worn with pride by many preteens. For those of you who have young children at home, the main question is whether early treatment is right for your child. To best answer this question, it is first important to define some terms. When discussing “early treatment,” I personally prefer the term interceptive treatment. It has the connotation of catching something before it becomes a bigger problem. The more common and practical term is “Phased” orthodontic treatment. In this case, treatment done at an earlier age (usually between 6-9 years old) is referred to as Phase I. It is aimed at correction of habits, skeletal discrepancies, as well as severe abnormalities in dental eruption. The later treatment, Phase II, is usually done at around 11-13 years old in order to place all permanent teeth in an ideal position. I call it more practical, because in most cases the second treatment is needed. The name serves as a reminder to the parents of this fact. Currently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic evaluation occur by age 7. Does this mean that all children require phased orthodontic treatment? Certainly not. The criteria for starting early treatment should be better or more predictable results. In my opinion, this is certainly the case when the upper jaw is too narrow and must be expanded, when upper front teeth are so protrusive (“buck”) that the incidence of trauma is much more likely (unless corrected), and cases of underbite (when the lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw). These treatments are “no brainers” for two reasons. The body of the younger patient is more amenable to these specific orthopedic (growth) corrections and statistically the preteen is more likely to traumatize a front tooth than at any other time. There are other times that treatment may be done for psychosocial reasons, as some children are very conscious of cosmetics. For those parents who are considering early treatment for their children, I recommend listening with an open mind. See if the reasons for starting treatment make sense to you. The rule of thumb would be “if it does not make sense, don’t do it! I find that most parents have a life philosophy which may make them either more or less open to preventative type treatments. As a parent, I find that I know what my child will be able to handle and be up to. Most importantly, if you decide as a family to start, have fun with it. Drs. ou should follow a number of Dean Sklar, PGA basics if you want consistent results like watching the PGA Tour Professionals on TV every Sunday. This is because there are certain degrees of freedom in the putting stroke, all of which have associated errors that can lead to inconsistency. Putting is simple, it is just not easy. It is the least complicated of all golf shots, but the one that causes the most frustration. Your objective should be to find a method that is simple, fundamentally sound and easy to repeat under pressure. Forget about the tips from well-meaning friends. There is no magic answer. Understand the basics, practice them until you can repeat them, and then get out of your own way. So, why do PGA Tour Professional golfers wind up with far fewer three putts than amateurs? Hours and hours of practice, for one thing. But it’s also due to better putting fundamentals, particularly being able to consistently repeat the same motion. There are four keys to putting: set-up, path and clubface, rhythm and tempo, and mental focus. SET-UP: I like the shaft angle of my putter leaning forward about 2-3 degrees. It makes it much easier to have the hands forward at impact, and you won’t miss putts to the left. I keep both thumbs going straight down the shaft, and little more weight on my left foot than right. Those are all big keys to good, consistent setup. In addition, make sure your shoulders and forearms are square to the target, and position the ball so that it’s about one ball-width inside your left instep. PATH AND CLUBFACE: Control the path the putter head swings on, and keep the clubface square to where you want the ball to start rolling. Even though the club is traveling in an arc, don’t twist or turn the clubface to compensate. If you just think straight back and straight through, that’s the way to go. Try to return the shaft to the same position where you started, particularly the same angle. RHYTHM AND TEMPO: The forward stroke should take half the time of the backswing on a putt. Amateurs make the mistake of taking the club too far back in their backswing and then decelerating at the point of impact. Instead, take a shorter backswing and accelerate through the ball. If you were counting the beats, instead of a two-beat swing cadence, it’s more like 1 1/2. MENTAL FOCUS: This may be the most important of the four, and perhaps the hardest to achieve. And yet, it’s exactly what a PGA Tour Professional was able to rely on when faced with a 46-foot eagle putt in Sunday’s final round when all the pressure was on the line. He was able to shut down any negative thoughts, concentrate on making the correct read, and then perform the fundamentals correctly to sink the putt and go on to win the tournament. Amateurs need to take that same positive attitude onto the course. If you walk up to a putt and you’re doubting your read, you’re doubting your aim, you’re doubting your stroke, it’s very hard to putt well. You have to fall in love with your read, you have to fall in love with your stroke and accept and be committed to your aim.

have been practicing law for over 35 years. I realized many years ago that allowing a judge or jury to make a decision in a case is always a last resort. Cases that ultimately proceed to trial involve either issues that cannot be compromised or individuals who can be unreasonable in their expectations. If you proceed to trial, your ability to control your destiny is severely compromised. You are allowing a third party to dictate the terms and conditions of your future. I can assure you that Judges much prefer to approve a settlement reached by the parties than to decide the fate of individuals. Judges often tell the respective parties that they will always be better off deciding the case between themselves, rather that have he/she decide some of these issues. They are further informed that a judge’s job is to be fair and equitable, which means that after the trial is over both parties usually leave the courthouse unhappy, neither obtaining what they were seeking. Of course that is not always true. There are obviously times when parties’ expectations are within reason and the results obtained at trial are satisfactory.

So how do you know when you should settle versus the alternative of going to trial? That is sometimes a very difficult question to answer. A lawyer can never guarantee results. A lawyer can advise a client about the law as it applies to the facts of his/her case. Often times judges have a great deal of discretion in their decision making, which makes any kind of prediction that much more difficult. Lawyers also assume that a judge will interpret the law as the lawyer interprets it. That is not always the case. When offers or counter-offers are unreasonable and one-sided, it is somewhat easy to make a decision. If you have nothing to lose by going to trail, and your worst result in court is still better than the offer being made, it is an easy decision. The cases which present the more difficult decisions are the one’s which result in offers which are perhaps fair but not quite what a person may envision as their end result. Perhaps the time sharing schedule with the minor children is not quite what was envisioned or the alimony amount is more than you expected to pay. Do you compromise or litigate? There is no easy answer. Each case needs to be looked at independently. A party must consider all possibilities. Cost and time are two important factors. A case which proceeds to trial will always take longer to conclude. The cost will always be greater. I suggest hiring an experienced trail attorney who can assist you in deciding the best way to conclude your case. There really is no substitute for experience.

rom the moment a child experiences their first interactions of “goo and ga” with their mom and dad to the time they participate in competitive sports on the high school football field, that child is learning through play. Play sets the stage for vital opportunities in the development of a slew of skills that are essential in determining a child’s future success. Regardless of age, children receive similar benefits from play. Through play children learn… ▸▸ how to make choices ▸▸ to use their imagination, improvise, think flexibly and explore new options ▸▸ to solve problems, both with materials and people ▸▸ to work cooperatively ▸▸ to put skills into action ▸▸ to give a project their attention until it’s done While academic skills are important, research has shown that the life skills that are learned through play are even bigger indicators of success
later in life than a child’s academic readiness. Good grades and academic ability can help a child get to where they need to go, but creativity, determination, follow through and being able to work with others will take them above and beyond that place. Play often involves engaging others socially, which is another vital life skill. When children don’t have adequate opportunities to play with other children they don’t have the chance to practice the skills needed in fostering relationships. Two children working together in the sandbox to build a castle, negotiating the give and take of play could translate later in life to two adults working cooperatively as a team on an important architectural project for their firm. Play is that vital for future success! Play comes in many forms and can include play dates, the playground, dramatic play and blocks at the preschool age to team sports, neighborhood play and game nights with older children. Play can be structured or unstructured, guided by adults or led by children. For some children, play will come naturally but for others it may need to be coaxed and encouraged. Regardless of how it’s done, it is important for parents to provide environments that allow for play and foster that type of learning so that children are well prepared for a competitive future. Eat, Live, Play!
lood testing is commonly used to help diagnose disease or pinpoint injury in animals. It can also help determine the state of your pet’s health during regular physical exam visits. Although a CBC or a chemistry profile can be performed separately, these tests are frequently done at the same time; when the results are interpreted together, they provide a good overview of many of the body’s functions. As with any other diagnostic test, results of a CBC and chemistry profile are not interpreted in a vacuum. Your veterinarian will combine this information with physical exam findings, medical history, and other information to assess your pet’s health status and determine if additional testing should be recommended.
How Is a CBC and Chemistry Profile Performed?
To perform a CBC and chemistry profile, your veterinary team must first obtain a small blood sample from your pet. This procedure is usually very quick; it may take only a few seconds if the patient is well behaved. For patients that are very frightened or not well behaved, your veterinary team may want to use a muzzle, towel, or other gentle restraint device. In some cases, such as in patients with very thick fur, it may be necessary to shave the hair from the area where blood will be drawn. This is often a good way to find the vein quickly, and the hair will grow back. Some veterinary offices have in-house blood analysis equipment, so they can perform a CBC and chemistry profile in the office and have results the same day. Other offices send blood samples to an outside laboratory for these tests to be performed. If an outside laboratory is used, results are generally available within one to two days. Because a recent meal changes the blood and may affect the results of a chemistry profile, your veterinarian may recommend that your pet not receive any food for eight to 12 hours before blood is drawn. In most cases, water can still be offered. Please let your veterinarian know if this temporary fast will be a problem for you or your pet. Also, be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications or supplements that your pet is receiving, as some products can alter the results of a chemistry profile.
What Is a CBC and Chemistry Profile Used For?
A CBC and chemistry profile is an important component of wellness blood work. Your veterinarian may recommend wellness blood work during your pet’s regular exams. Even if your pet is young and healthy, performing this testing periodically helps establish “normal” values for your pet. The next time blood work is performed, your veterinarian can compare the results with previous results to see if anything has changed. Depending on your pet’s age and health history, additional tests (such as thyroid testing or urinalysis) may also be recommended as part of wellness testing. For seniors or chronically ill pets, your veterinarian may recommend blood work more frequently. Wellness blood work screens for many medical conditions, including diabetes and kidney disease. In many cases, early diagnosis and management can improve quality of life and the long-term prognosis for pets with chronic illnesses. Performing a CBC and chemistry panel poses minimal risk for your pet, and in many cases, the information your veterinarian gains from this testing is invaluable. Teen Travel Camp is just for campers entering sixth through eighth grade. Its programs were specifically planned with the likes of middle school-aged campers in mind. Campers will participate in three off campus field trips each week to locations such as indoor trampoline parks, X-Treme Action Park, Jungle Island, Miami Speed Boat, Rapids Water Park, tubing at C.B. Smith Park and much more. Of course, our teen campers can also join many of our specialty camp programs as well, such as Sports, STEM, Robotics, Marine Science, Art or Drama.
The Sagemont School is well-known for its exceptional arts programs. How does Camp Sagemont make these resources available to campers? Camp Sagemont offers four weeks of art camp with a
certified art teacher who inspires campers to trust their imagination and natural creative instincts. Art Camp is for campers entering third through eighth grade. During the session, campers will create a multitude of projects using a variety of materials. In addition, campers will participate in art-related field trips to further inspire their creativity and understanding of art. Campers participating in the Drama Camp this summer will learn the ins and outs of theater as they rehearse and prepare for an end-of-camp production of The Lion King.
Why should parents consider enrolling their child in an arts-based camp program? Camp Sagemont’s Art and Drama Camps bring life to
a camper’s imagination. Whether campers are working on a 3D sculpture or taking on a character in a theatrical production, the sky is the limit. Children are so concerned with getting the answers correct during the school year that their imagination often gets left behind. Art and Drama Camp provide the opportunity for campers to let their imagination soar as there is no correct answer to the question of how art is created and appreciated. Art Camp runs June 12th through July 7th, while Drama Camp is offered from July 24th through August 11th.
Why should parents consider an academic-based camp? Many
parents are looking for fun and enriching academic-based activities to keep their children’s minds active throughout the summer. In addition, research indicates that students who keep their minds actively engaged do not display summer regression upon returning to the classroom. The goal to increase student knowledge is especially important for English language learning students who have the greatest probability for regression, not only in content but overall English language development. Camp Sagemont strives to answer the global demand to provide a continuous and fun academic learning experience during the summer.
What types of academic enrichment are available this summer?
For campers who are in need of some additional academic instruction or
for those who wish to get a jump on the next school year, Camp Sagemont offers the Academic Advantage Plus program and Reading Rocks. Camp Sagemont also offers an outstanding English as a Second Language (ESL) camp program. With the Plus portion of Academic Advantage Plus and ESL Advantage Plus, parents who wish for their child to avoid the summer slide are able to achieve this through academics in the morning and camp in the afternoon.

What is Reading Rocks? In addition to
the selection of two subject areas, each Academic Advantage Plus camper will participate in Reading Rocks, a program designed explicitly to assist campers and families in completing their summer reading list and related assignments. Campers will spend 30 minutes each day reading a book from their list. They will log their reading daily, identify and define any new words learned, as well as share key points about their book with classmates. Upon completion of the book, campers will complete book reports or other summer reading assignments. Reading Rocks is also available to traditional day campers entering first through third grade during Camp Clubs.
What is ESL Advantage Plus? Returning this summer, ESL Advantage
Plus will help students who are learning to speak English prepare for the upcoming school year. Our Elementary ESL campers, entering first through fifth grade, will participate in English lessons from 9 am to 12 noon daily, then join a camp of their choice in the afternoon. ESL Advantage Plus is offered in two, four-week blocks. The first is from June 12th through July 7th and the second session from July 10th through August 4th. Middle and high school ESL Advantage Plus campers, entering sixth through twelfth grade, will attend English lessons from 9 am to 3:30 pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, allowing them to join the Teen Travel Camp on Wednesday and Friday field trips. The middle and high school ESL Advantage Plus program runs from July 17th through August 11th.
How does Camp Sagemont allow traditional day campers to explore new activities and skills? Camp Clubs return this year and
will be offered in the afternoons for our traditional Camp Sagemont campers who are in first grade through third grade cabins. Camp Clubs are a wonderful opportunity for campers to pursue areas of individual interest. Campers can select a Camp Club to participate in on a weekly basis. Choices change every three weeks. Some of the options include Cheer & Dance, Scrapbooking, Environmental Club, STEM Explorers, Stop Animation, and Fuse Bead Fun. Camp Sagemont offers tradition day camp and a wide variety of specialty camps. All programs are held on Sagemont’s Lower School Campus in Weston. Camp Sagemont begins the week of June 12th and runs through August 11th. Camp hours are 9 am to 3:30 pm, with early care and after care available. WATER MATTERS
Tequesta Trace Middle School's Eco-Partners Club and the Junior Honor Society hosted two booths at Broward County’s Water Matters Day. Over 500 people visited to learn about their Eco-Partner Projects and to build a community mural that upcycled plastic bottle caps. The other booth explained how the Environmental Adviser and Science Teacher, Ms. Sant Angelo, traveled to Taiwan as part of the National Wildlife Federation's US-Taiwan Delegation for EcoSchools.

As part of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) lesson, students in Andrea Perez's 4th grade gifted/high achievers class at Manatee Bay Elementary competed in rain gutter ship races.

Students from Manatee Bay Elementary competed in the Broward SECME-STEM Olympiad. Approximately 1,000 students, from all grades, participated in various challenges focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

After studying the life cycle of butterflies, prekindergarten students at Indian Trace Elementary were excited to watch their butterflies explore their new home in the school’s butterfly garden.
COMMUNITY GARDEN
As a culmination to a unit on plants, students in Patty DeBiase’s third grade class at Indian Trace Elementary planted a salsa garden. Orchard Supply Hardware donated the supplies and manpower to build the raised garden, and then helped the children plant vegetables and flowers. The class hopes to harvest their crop to make their own salsa for an end-of-the-year party.

Photographer/Psychiatrist Joel Walker created an interactive art exhibit in the classroom, featuring 100 photographs of a tiger and her cub that he captured at Miami Zoo. The children picked their five favorites and wrote about how the pictures made them feel.
