Summer Fun Starts In This Issue

he CDC recently announced that more than half of American adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. After the “lost” year of 2020, we are all eager to get back to our “normal” lives. This is especially true with families with young children. Finding and planning summer activities can be especially challenging this year. Luckily, we’ve got you covered! Be sure to check out Our City’s Summer Camp Guide in this month’s issue.

We have included a carefully curated reference of the area’s day camps, academic enrichment programs, and sporting activities with options for children of all ages. Whether your child is an avid cheerleader, a soccer star, a budding actor, or a future scientist, Our City’s Summer Camp Guide has something for everyone and every interest. To make choosing the perfect program, or programs, even easier, we’ve designed the Summer Camp Guide to allow parents to match summer activities to their kids’ interests. When it comes to making the most out of school breaks, Our City has got you covered. But, we are also your go-to resource for children’s activities throughout the school year. Be sure to look for our special Back to School Guide in the August issue for a detailed listing of afterschool programs, athletic activities, and artistic enrichment pursuits as well as area preschools and private schools.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Kindness Rocks in Weston By Beverly Perkins

S

preading kindness is encouraged every single day in Weston and all over the world, but The City of Weston and the Arts Council of Greater Weston wanted to take the concept to another level by designating a specific campaign for the community to express

such beautiful gestures. “Random Acts of Kindness Day” was kicked off in mid-February, and although it should never end, the thought-provoking event concluded on March 30th with a “Walk in the Park Day”. The entire community was encouraged to share inspirational messages and a spirit of kindness as the anniversary of the pandemic approached. “During this time we found that high school students have been struggling to find ways to earn community service hours for graduation, so we put a call out to students and offered community service hours to those who took the time to design, paint, and deliver their kindness rocks to us at City Hall. We had several high school students that participated in that way, earning

up to six hours,” stated Pam Solomon, Assistant Director of Communications. Community rock gardens were placed in Country Isles Park, Peace Mound Park, and Gator Run Park. Residents of all ages were asked to paint a rock with inspirational messages and leave them at one of the select locations. Of course, some specific rules and guidelines were given to those participating such as “Be Kind”, “Be Creative”, and “Spread Kindness”. Messages had to be positive, inspirational, and kid-friendly. Rocks also needed to be smaller than a baseball. Those who added to the collections were also asked to take a photo of themselves and their rock to post on their favorite social media platform with #KindnessRocksWeston.

The gardens were filled with colorful stones displaying pictures, words, and messages. Those visiting the garden were allowed to take a rock if it had special meaning to them or if they provided hope and cheer. In the spirit of “Take One, Leave One,”, there was consistent turnover which showed active participation. “We were happy to see the creativity and genuine kind-heartedness of the Weston community each time we visited the rock gardens in our parks.,” exclaimed Solomon.

The development is perfectly situated just off of Hollywood’s famed Broadwalk where unique shopping and dining experiences are a short walk away. Residents enjoy ocean and Intracoastal views Roger Lohse, with REMAX 5 Star Realty, is leading sales for the project. We caught up with him to learn more about the exciting development. Tell us about Beachside Residences. Beachside Residences is a truly unique, state of the art property in Hollywood. Each of our residences will be designed by the Italian design firm Minotti and delivered with flooring, cabinets, countertops and appliances that are top-of-the-line. In addition to being steps away from the beach, residents will enjoy a number of amenities, including a private, heated swimming pool and a fitness center. The first two levels of the building will house our parking garage. One and two bedroom units will be assigned one space while three and four bedroom units will be assigned two spaces. And, of course, the views will be spectacular.

Yes! In fact, this is essentially a no-risk opportunity to get in at pre-construction prices. There is a $25,000 reservation deposit that is 100% refundable until we begin construction this summer. Once we go to contact, our deposit structure will be as follows: 25% due at signing, 10% due when the slab of the building is poured and 5% due when the roof is completed. The remaining balance will be due at closing.

Sounds great, what is the price range for the units?

I’m interested! When do you expect construction to begin?

Our prices range from $700,000 up to $2.3 Million. Tell us about the location. Beachside Residences is located just 10 minutes from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, close to several local shopping and dining destinations and is in the heart of central Hollywood Beach. REAL ESTATE

earching for a home in today’s real estate market can be one of the most stressful experiences you could face. Limited inventory has made it challenging to buy a home. Finding the “perfect home” with few to chose from, competing with multiple offers, and “highest and best” requests can leave a buyer overwhelmed.

tips for buyers and sellers in a multiple offer situation:

• A skilled real estate agent can help you develop a smart and ethical strategy. • Be ready, get pre-approved, and know what you can afford. • Act Fast • Make your offer the most desirable to the seller. This doesn’t necessarily mean the highest-priced offer is the best. Sellers have to consider the financial contingency: Is it is a cash offer or a conventional loan? FHA or VA? Is there a home inspection contingency? Or a home sale contingency? You should have a strategy to make your offer appealing to the seller.

Home sellers are more fortunate. Most sellers are receiving many offers, with some over the listing price. A seller may choose to employ the “highest and best” offer tactic in a multiple-offer scenario rather than wade through each offer in detail and negotiate with multiple buyers simultaneously.

during this process and help you get the home you’ve always wanted or the most out of your home sale.

FROM THE STATEHOUSE

INTRODUCING SERENA’S LAW BY STATE REP. ROBIN BARTLEMAN

D

ear Residents,

On March 1st I traveled to Tallahassee for the Legislative Session. I have proposed multiple pieces of legislation to address issues both within our cities and across the State. One bill I would like to highlight is HB 1229. Representative PersonsMulicka (R) and I introduced Serena’s Law to protect child victims from sexual assault. As a mother, when I dropped my daughters off at a camp or a youth group, I was under the impression that a thorough background check was done on the people that would be around my children. After hearing Serena’s story, it is clear that a loophole in public court records exists that could impact the safety of our children. The namesake of the bill was a victim of childhood sexual

abuse and pursued action in civil court and an injunction was entered for her protection. Despite this, she discovered that her perpetrator’s name did not appear in searchable court records, and that he was volunteering with youth organizations. The result of this gap is that background checks may not show that potential employees or volunteers have had court ordered injunctions issued against them for the protection of minors. Serena’s law is an effort to fix this. This bill ensures that if a court determines that an adult has sexually abused a minor or enacts an order to keep the adult away from a child, individuals such as school administrators or summer camp employers, can search for the identity of the offender. I appreciate Serena coming forward and sharing her story to keep Florida’s children safe. In addition to this bill, I have introduced numerous bills relating to healthcare

coverage for children, healthcare disparities, inland and coastal flood mitigation, affordable housing, protecting the anonymity of sexual assault victims, and removing State penalties for high stakes testing (FSA) during COVID-19. I have filed appropriations to address flooding and road safety. I have co sponsored numerous bills including ones to fix the broken unemployment system, improve VPK education, provide mental healthcare to veterans, require gun safety measures, and repeal preemption of local laws on the sale of disposable plastics. I am also fighting against any changes to Florida’s Bright Futures Scholarship Program. Once this Session closes, I will be setting aside time to meet with you, hear your ideas, and develop bill ideas for next Session. Please do not hesitate to contact me at (954) 668-3662 and robin. bartleman@myfloridahouse.gov.

POSITIVE PARENTING

In Good Health W By Ivis Mateos

e are living through a time period when viruses and germs are the new topic of interest wherever you go. For us in the preschool environment, this topic is one we deal with just about every day. One of the top concerns parents have when enrolling their children in preschool, is whether or not their children will get sick. Well, I will confirm that THEY WILL GET SICK, if they are human. Getting exposed to other young humans that have boogers, saliva, and love to eat and stick anything they can get their hands on in their mouth, is inevitable in any environment where a group of children as well as adults may gather. However, I can assure you there’s no need to panic. First, let’s go over building a strong immune system and immunity to viruses and accepting germs are like our best friends. “Our immune system is a series of cells, tissues and organs that, throughout our lifetime, protects us from different invading pathogens and keeps us healthy and able to resist many repeated infections,” says

Dr. Ashouri, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at CHOC. “When babies are infants, they get immune cells from mom through the placenta and breast milk, if they are breastfeeding. Over time, the baby’s system becomes mature and can fight off infections.” When a parent worries about their child getting “sick” I like to remind them that sick is not necessarily a bad thing, children build immunity from exposure to different environments and people, and sometimes they get fevers, develop mucus, sneezing, coughing etc. all of these things are reactions and expressions of the process the body is expressing in order to begin building a resistance to whatever is trying to invade their body, thus creating a stronger immune system for future exposures and tolerance to a cold, virus, allergy etc. As we get to know our children better & with the help of health professionals, we learn to identify a common cold vs a more serious infection and when necessary, seek professional help to aid in the healing process. However, we should learn to trust the power of our immune system and the

important role germs or microbes play in our lives. A Harvard published article explains that “Diversity is the key to beneficial microbial populations. Not only does a wider array of microbes mean a greater variety of bacterial byproducts for body cells to use, it also leaves less territory for disease-causing bacteria to occupy. That’s why the new approach to microbes is directed at maintaining a healthy balance of germs throughout the body-The microorganisms that inhabit your body can be valuable allies in reducing inflammation and treating disease.” Source: health.harvard.edu. In essence, good health comes as the child develops immunity with time through natural environment exposure, good nutrition, a balanced emotional health and parents’ understanding of the powerful innate intelligence their children are born with. Children are resilient little humans, trust the process.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Life Can Change in an Instant

I

By Bruce Iden, Esquire

n 2018, after a string of mass shootings, I first addressed in this column the reality that life does not always go as planned. It was after a shooting in the Delta baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale International Airport where five people were killed. While I did not personally know any of the victims, this event and the Parkland massacre several months later were right in our own backyards. Our entire community watched in shock as horrific details were reported, and we all collectively grieved with the families who lost loved ones. Recent mass killings in Atlanta and Boulder remind us once again that life can change in the blink of an eye. What all of these tragedies and others, whether at a church in Charleston or a country music festival in Las Vegas, have in common is that left behind were devastated families, friends, and communities. People, just living their lives, had no idea their souls would be leaving this earth. We can all agree that life does not always go the way you expect. Plans put off until later, may never happen. Life events often trigger thoughts about your own mortality sooner rather than later. The reality of our COVID-19 world has motivated many to act. As an attorney specializing in wills and trusts, I see firsthand what may happen to a family after an unexpected death. During a very emotional time, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind. The majority of my estate planning practice focuses on helping clients prospectively prepare to take care of their family and assets after they are gone. I offer counsel regarding the best estate plan for their unique needs. As a caring and responsible parent or spouse, there are things you should think about and take care of. Now. Let’s start with your minor children. Have you thought about who will care for them if you are not around? What about financial support? Do you know if you have the right amount, and the right type, of life insurance for your particular family needs? What about college? How will that be paid for? Do you look after or support your parents? What will happen to them if you are not around? Now, think for a moment about what your final wishes for your family might be. How do you want to leave assets to your heirs? Are there charities you wish to support? Who will inherit your business and real estate? There are so many questions to consider. Perhaps the lesson to be learned from tragedy is to always try to live a good life full of kindness and gratitude, and to remember to love and cherish our families and friends every day. The reality is that we do not know what the future holds. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

⊲ Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University

National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. SPECIAL FEATURE: 2021 SUMMER GUIDE

Happy Campers By Beverly Perkins

G

iven that we have been amid a pandemic since last March, children have been deprived of valuable opportunities to socialize safely, and as a result, have become increasingly dependent on technology. By going to camp this summer, children will be provided with the vital socialization, a plentitude of activities, and stress-free fun that they missed out on due to COVID-19. Camp is an opportunity for children to branch out, meet new people, try new things, and detach from reality for the summer. Between day camps, sports camps, science camps, dance camps, art camps, drama camps, and sleepaway camps, there is bound to be an option that is most suitable for your child.

DAY CAMPS & SPORTS CAMPS & SLEEPAWAY CAMPS, OH MY! The multitude of camps available provide children and teens with opportunities to try new things and maybe even discover a new passion or develop an existing one even further. Camp encourages kids to live a healthy lifestyle by making new activities fun and by providing new experiences.

For example, some day camps include an overnight in which your child will have the opportunity to bond with other campers longer than a traditional day. They may be able to hike and sleep in the woods for the night or just stay over and watch movies like a giant slumber party. Science camps challenge their campers to create robots and learn coding. Acting camps can get a timid child on stage whereas art camps can engage an active child to focus on painting and drawing while developing fine motor skills. Although any camp will ensure that your child has a fun summer, sleepaway camps can truly have such a positive impact on kids of all ages. Maybe it is because most of these camps do not allow outside technology, or because it is a simpler way of living with no outside “noise” or interference. Simply stated, camps away from home provide a unique environment far away from the worries of life. Sleepaway camps have also been known to foster maturity and independence. Whether it is a few weeks or an entire summer, sleepaway camp inspires children and teens to be all they can be while bringing out the best version of themselves.

ADVENTURE OR ARTS Depending what one chooses, specialized camps offer unique activities such as kayaking, horseback riding, waterskiing, ropes courses, rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, and so many more. For those wanting a quieter pace, art, yoga, and science camps offer courses to hone one’s skills and/or encourage new ones. Without camp, developing children miss out on new opportunities and the chance to discover a passion or talent that might have gone unnoticed otherwise and most importantly themselves. Whether choosing a day camp or a sleepaway camp, your child will be able to express themselves without any judgment or fear. Even if you think your child is too shy for camp, the experience will encourage them to branch out and be more outgoing in the future.

CAMP FRIENDS ARE THE BEST FRIENDS Not only is camp beneficial over summer, but meeting people (counselors and fellow campers) from across the country, down the street, and even from around the world is valuable year-round. Camp friends truly are the best friends and having people outside of their regular circle to lean on is priceless for all children going through elementary, middle, and high school years. Even when going to college, camp friends can help each other find roommates. The memories and friendships created at camp truly last a lifetime.

With so many choices in the area, your kid is sure to be one happy camper!

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

Weston Resident, Laurel Kelly Levey, Creates an Independent Film During the Pandemic! as she makes a leap from professional actress to producing and starring in this highly emotional film,” Darnay said. “Boxed” is a fictional story of Leah and Dovid and their journey in a boxcar en-route to Auschwitz. They are a happily married couple from Austria who are professional dancers. The unusual nature of the film’s storyline and action creates a palate for relating their story during two distinct eras, the late 1930’s, and the early 1970’s

T

he premiere of the first Shemesh Films’ Project “Boxed”, directed by multi-award-winning director Alyn Darnay, will be screened at a location (TBD) for a spectacular gala opening evening in late June 2021. Creator, Writer, Executive Producer, and Star, Laurel Kelly Levey, together with Broadway star Avi Hoffman are the leading actors of the intense short Holocaust film.

“I feel proud that I was able to hire (cast & crew members) during the pandemic restrictions,” Kelly Levey said.” The pause over COVID-19 is what allowed me the time I needed to get this project from paper to actual production.” “This is an exciting moment for Laurel

“It is a story of faith, hope, and survival, and overcoming the clutches of true evil,” Laurel Levey said. Not only is this believed to be the first time that a Holocaust film has been produced in Florida, but it has also been accomplished by a first-time female filmmaker. “Boxed” was filmed mostly in Yiddish with some German and English rounding out the dialogue; it is, however, complete with subtitles. Avi Hoffman, a resident of Coral Springs and a multi- award-winning Yiddish Broadway star, is cast as the husband Dovid. Kelly Levey, a Weston resident who has more than 40 film and TV credits to her name, plays his wife Leah. Alex Coren, aged 13, also a resident of Weston, makes

his debut as the youngest cast member in “Boxed” playing the son of the lead actors. The production also employed 30 Floridabased background actors. Tickets will be on sale in mid-May. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to one of the many Holocaust entities in South Florida. About Shemesh Films Shemesh Films is a motion picture production company focusing on Jewish-related content. Founded in June 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Shemesh Films is already busy working on their next project. Please visit the fan page at -https://www. facebook.com/BOXEDBYSHEMESHFILMS

COMMUNITY NEWS

It’s Tree Trimming Season!

T

By John Duka

here are more than 40,000 trees in the City of Weston. The beautiful canopy that provides shade in many of our city’s streets is one of the most desirable aspects of the community. It is also quite unique in South Florida. Unfortunately, in addition to being a welcome and beautiful feature of our city, trees can also provide projectiles for a major storm.

The upper canopy of a large tree can create a sail effect when under intense wind. This force can pull the tree out by the roots creating a devastating effect when the tree falls. This is why it is important to thin out our tree’s canopy prior to hurricane season. Coconuts can also be turned into projectiles in a strong storm. The City’s tree canopy is protected via the permitting process for tree removal. In the evaluation of a Tree Removal permit, priority is given to protected trees for the preservation or relocation, replacement, and/or payment into the Weston Tree Trust Account. Every effort is made to preserve and maintain natural vegetation within the City as identified in the City’s Comprehensive Plan.

If you need to remove a tree or have questions about any trees on your property, contact the City’s Tree Preservation Code Administrator, Bill Tesauro at 954266-6489 or via email at to discuss the specific issue on your property. All tree/ palm trimming, removal, relocations, and root pruning not done by the homeowner themselves, must be done by a City of Weston registered tree service provider.

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is getting ready to power up with new electric school buses, thanks to a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). Through the grant, the

District is purchasing 60 electric buses. BCPS is also partnering with Florida Power & Light Company, which will provide the charging infrastructure for the electric buses at each BCPS transportation terminal. Each electric bus is a standard

72-passenger vehicle. Unlike typical diesel buses, the electric buses produce no emissions at the tailpipe and are quiet on the road – reducing noise pollution. The quiet ride makes it more comfortable for passengers inside to have conversations. The District is now working to complete its order for the 60 new buses, with the goal of having them delivered and ready to use within the next year. Once the buses hit the road, BCPS will be operating the largest fleet of electric buses in the state. “This exciting opportunity is an example of our District’s commitment to protect the communities we drive-through and the environment as we move toward healthier and more environmentally friendly

transportation options,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We appreciate the state’s support and collaboration with this grant. Reducing our carbon footprint is a responsibility we all share. We’re excited to be taking this first step with 60 electric buses and look forward to expanding our fleet of electric buses moving forward.” The District’s Student Transportation and Fleet Services Department includes approximately 1,300 buses, with about 950 used during daily routes and the remaining buses used for school events and activities. The new electric buses will serve as replacements for older diesel school buses built-in or before 2009.

Student Artists Showcase 2021 Goes Virtual T

he Arts Council of Greater Weston, in collaboration with the City of Weston, will present its 14th Annual Student Artists Showcase 2021 as a Virtual Exhibition. It will feature over 150 works of art. This year’s exhibit will highlight the creativity and talent of the student artists. Seventeen dedicated art teachers, representing kindergarten through 12th grade, from 11 Greater Weston area public and private schools, are participating in the exhibit.

Gryssele Mchicote, Student Artist Showcase Director, notes, “I am impressed by the passion and commitment of our Art Staff, especially during this pandemic. They were interested in participating in our first ever Virtual Student Artist Showcase Exhibition 2021. They continue to inspire their students to produce unique, diverse, and colorful works of art.” Due to the pandemic, art teachers were asked to submit up to 10 photos of student artwork from their art activities for the year instead of the originals. All photos of the featured mediums have been accepted: acrylic, ceramic, crayon, color pencil, digital art, digital photography, graphite, ink, marker, mixed media, oil paint, oil pastel, pastel, photography, 3D sculptures, tempera, and watercolor. This year, participant certificates and Ribbons will be distributed to each student artist selected. The traditional judging and reception can not be held in the Weston Library because of Covid-19 restrictions. The Student Artist Showcase 2021 Virtual Exhibition will be released to the community on April 28, 2021. You can view the selected works on all social media platforms including the websites of the City and the Arts Council as well as Twitter, Instagram, etc. The Arts Council President was delighted with the response of the student artists and the art teachers. “On behalf of the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston, we say, BRAVO for an excellent job on the quality and variety of the artwork submissions for our 14th Annual Student Artist Showcase 2021!”

ROTARY NEWS

Rotary, the Reverence for Life and

The Glory Road By Dr. Martin C. Taylor, Rotarian

R

otary started in 1905, in Chicago, when four fortunate businessmen decided to meet weekly to overcome social and personal isolation and to discuss business in a landlocked but pivotal center of commerce, midway between two oceans. Paul Harris and his three companions, after much thought following years of joining hands, realized that social isolation was a dilemma that affected others in other cities and decided to incorporate and expand their message. They added--and this is central--a moral and ethical dimension to ease the societal dilemma: Voluntarism and charitable works to the less fortunate. Meetings enabled organization, and organization is power. But offering material assistance without expecting a return on investment enabled hope for all concerned: The givers and receivers.

By 2019, that founding quartet’s ideology of “Service above Self” now embraces about 1.3 million committed men and women in 160 countries. In South Florida’s District 6990 (three counties and the Bahamas), some 2,000 persons in 50 clubs join hands and hearts weekly over breakfast, lunch, or dinner to plot out avenues of charitable service to local, national, and international persons and places in desperate need. Long-range, Rotary International’s eradication of polio project in Africa, India, and the Middle East has been 99% effective, after millions of Salk vaccine doses were administered door-to-door and in soccer stadiums. Recently, Rotarians in District 6990 organized immediately to send plane loads of food and supplies—and hope—to the victims of Hurricane Dorian.

Rotarians worldwide live aware of the reverence for life, the sense of life’s fragility, and the fleetingness of time. They overcome their own fear and anxiety by doing unto others and not expecting a return. In this vein, I conclude with an abbreviated invocation given at The Rotary Club of Weston called “The Glory Road.” “Rotarians, today’s message is that time is fleeting for me and for all of us. A pope, in 1401, expressed this idea in a pithy Latin phrase, which has been echoed over the centuries by philosophers (Thomas a Kempis) and writers (Emily Dickinson). The pope said: “Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.” Two translations: So passes worldly glory. Thus passes the glory of the world.” Glory for most of us means time remaining to continue embracing family and friends and to keep on improving our own small portion of the world. This invocation is not an appeal for meditation and philosophizing, but a call for action. What mark are we as Rotarians going to make before the glory of the world slips away?

Confidence is the Secret to Putting Well

P

utting is the most important part of the game and you can only excel with confidence.

The good news is that putting isn’t difficult, you know you can make a short putt. The bad news is you know how difficult it is to consistently make short putts. Once you start to miss the short putts, your confidence wanes. To start holing them again you need a boost to your confidence, and therein lies the problem. How do you regain your confidence? How do you conquer the game of confidence as putting is often referred to? Repeatedly missing short putts is no fun and destroys the enjoyment you should have playing this wonderful game. Do you feel humiliated at missing another short putt? It’s simply embarrassing. No wonder it can feel like you are on a slippery slope as your game slips into an exercise of hitting and hoping. Putting with doubt and without

By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

confidence is a card wrecker, but I bet it hasn’t always been that way. Your current putting is probably totally alien to how you played as a kid when there was no fear or tension. Can you remember the competitions you used to play with your friends? There was no room for thinking you would miss. You were all absolutely confident of winning the hole. I have great memories of playing 18 holes as a junior golfer, having something to eat and drink in the clubhouse, and then out for evening contests on the practice putting green. There simply wasn’t time for dwelling on the prospect of a three putt. Instead, thoughts were of how to hole yet another monster putt. If you analyze what has happened over the decades, you may now find that the second you take your putter out of the bag, you are immediately in a love or hate relationship with the club. Quite simply, are you relishing the challenge ahead of you, or are you fearful of what might happen next? Are you fueled with positive or negative

emotions? Even before you start to read the line of the putt, are you tentative rather than enthusiastic? You definitely need the solid belief that stops you from being tentative. One that comes from having real confidence. The kind built on proper foundations. Because this is the part of the game where you mentally have to be at your toughest. The truth is, you need a strong mental game to putt well. The pressure builds up as you get nearer the hole because there is no longer any more room to recover. You can recover from a sliced drive with a good recovery shot to the center of the fairway. You can even recover from a poor approach shot with a well-played chip shot. But when it comes to putting, there is nowhere to recover except from duly holing the putt in front of you. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to building the confidence you need to putt successfully. Next month, we’ll examine some common misconceptions about putting and learn how to help develop the skills you need to putt confidently.

urricane Season is just around the corner. That means families are getting their “go kits” ready, making sure shutters are readily available and stowing items that could potentially turn into projectiles. Broward County created a registry for those of us who can’t head for safer ground in the event of a devastating storm. If you or a loved one is at risk due to disability, frailty, or other health issue, regardless of age - register for the Vulnerable Population Registry. Registration does not guarantee that you will be provided assistance but is a great tool to take into account during the planning of an emergency. The County keeps an updated list that shares the information with appropriate City staff for resources that may be available to you during times like these.

O

Ortho-k

By Jane Therrien OD, FIAOMC, Optometric Physician

rthokeratology (also known as ortho-k) is a treatment that relies on custom designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the front surface of the eye, or the cornea to improve vision. It’s like orthodontics for eyes and is often compared to dental braces. The patient wears these lenses only while they sleep. After waking, the patient will remove the contact lenses and can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or contact lenses. Vision improvement is reversible but can be maintained if you continue wearing the lenses as directed. Ortho-k is a safe, non-surgical alternative to LASIK surgery and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The shape of the cornea dictates much about the quality of a person’s vision. Myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) are so-called “refractive errors” and are caused by the shape of the cornea and the length of

62 / Our City Weston / May 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

the eyeball. Astigmatism is another condition caused by the shape of the cornea, this time by irregularities in the curvature of the eye. Presbyopia is a natural annoying part of aging, a gradual worsening of near vision that occurs around age 40 and continues until around age 65. Ortho-k can be used to correct all of these conditions. Ortho-k has been also been clinically proven to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Myopia is more than an inconvenience. It can pose a serious risk to your child’s long term vision. As a child develops and the myopia rapidly progresses, the child is at a higher risk of developing dangerous eye diseases later in life. These include retinal detachments, macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts. The higher the myopia, the higher the risk of these sight threatening complications. Thankfully, myopia management can help. Myopia management solutions include ortho-k, multifocal contact lenses and atropine eye drops. New

research states that giving children low dose atropine eye drops at bedtime can slow the progression of myopia. Children who receive atropine drops will still need glasses. Soft Multifocal contact lenses have also been shown to decrease the progression of nearsightedness. MiSight 1 day is the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lens to slow the progression of myopia in children. If you have any questions about our ortho-k, our myopia treatment options or would like to schedule an appointment, you can contact us at 954-888-9393.

orning sickness. weight gain. skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result—smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms

may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help.

and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover.

A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing, and restore and enhance your body.

The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations.

In general, a mommy makeover may include: • Breast augmentation • Breast lift • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) • Butt lift • Liposuction

For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift

It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover.

Are you done having children?

If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate.

Are you at a stable weight?

Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery.

Are you finished breastfeeding?

You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.

Heel Pain In Children

D

By Dr. Carlo A. Messina

oes your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children. Cause: ▸  Growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel ▸  Over-activity in children commonly between the ages of 8 and 14 ▸  Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially

the calf muscle ▸  Flatfeet ▸  Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot ▸  Growth spurts

Symptoms:

▸  Discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity ▸  Occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle ▸  Stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running ▸  Pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity ▸  Pain is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time, and then tries to get up and walk

Signs:

▸  Tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel ▸  Walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground ▸  Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel ▸  Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens

Treatment:

▸  Modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot ▸  Rest and ice ▸  Stretching exercises ▸  Proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel ▸  Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament

▸  Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone ▸  Custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment ▸  Occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing ▸  Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood/Aventura, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers,

such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

THE DIFFICULT ISSUE OF RELOCATION

A

AWARDED 10 YEARS

By Evan H. Baron, Esq.

nyone involved in family law, whether it be an attorney, mediator, or even a judge, will agree that relocation cases are often the most difficult and challenging. Let me first explain the concept of RELOCATION. A relocation occurs when one parent is seeking permission to relocate with a minor child more than 50 miles from their home. This generally occurs post judgment, meaning after the parties have already been divorced; although it could be an element that is addressed during the dissolution itself. It is not the parent’s relocation that becomes an issue, but rather the minor child’s. Several years ago, the Florida Legislature passed a relocation statute, which dictates how these matters must proceed. A parent who was or is married to the other parent (paternity cases are not always the same), must receive either written permission from the other parent or a court order allowing the relocation to occur. Assuming there is no agreement between the parents, Florida Statutes require the “relocating parent” to file a Petition to Relocate. If a time-sharing schedule has already been established by the court, a request to modify the time-sharing schedule must also be included. The Petition must be served upon the other parent, who will have twenty days to respond. The petition must include the following language: A RESPONSE TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION OBJECTING TO RELOCATION MUST BE MADE IN WRITING, FILED WITH THE COURT, AND SERVED ON THE PARENT OR OTHER PERSON SEEKING TO RELOCATE WITHIN 20 DAYS AFTER SERVICE OF THIS SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION TO RELOCATE. IF YOU FAIL TO TIMELY OBJECT TO THE RELOCATION, THE RELOCATION WILL BE ALLOWED, UNLESS IT IS NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILD, WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE AND WITHOUT A HEARING.

The Petition must include the following:

• A description of the location of the intended new residence, including the state, city and specific address if known • The home telephone number of the intended new residence • The date of the intended move • A detailed statement of the specific reasons for the proposed relocation. If it is based upon a job offer which has been reduced to writing, it must be attached. • A proposal for the modified time sharing schedule.

In deciding whether to grant the relocation, the Court must consider:

• The relationship between the minor child and the nonrelocating parent • The age and developmental stage of the child and the likely impact a relocation will have on that child • The feasibility of preserving the relationship between the child and the nonrelocating parent • The child’s preference, taking into consideration the age and maturity of the child • Whether the relocation will enhance the general quality of life for the child and the parent seeking relocation • The reasons the nonrelocating parent is in fact objecting • The current economic and employment circumstances of each parent • Whether the relocation is being sought in good faith • ANY OTHER FACTOR AFFECTING THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILD.

As you can see, this is a complicated issue. It would be best for both parties to seek legal counsel before considering such a move.

Wandering, an Unfortunate Reality in Children with Special Needs By Dr. Angela Cristina Rodriguez

T

he diagnosis of Autism has increased its prevalence in recent years, and it is our commitment to learn, understand and make our communities safe for all of our children. Many parents can recall moments when they were unable to locate their child, creating a situation of extreme anxiety. Wandering is defined as a dependent person leaving a supervised, safe space for more than a brief period or running away. Wandering is considered developmentally normal for toddlers. However, for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder who have an impaired sense of danger, this experience may occur more frequently throughout their child’s life. Many of these situations end up in needing medical attention or even a child’s death. According to a study in Pediatrics 2012, 49% of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder have the tendency to wander. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Accidental drowning accounts for 71% of lethal outcomes, followed by traffic injuries at 18%.

Different authors highlight the dangers of Autism as presented by Paul Lipkin, MD, FAAP at the virtual 2020 American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference. The younger the child, the higher risk of injury or death from wandering. As Pediatricians we recommend close monitoring at every health visit and encourage parents to work closely with schools, police, neighbors, local agencies and support groups to ensure our children’s safety in the community.

situation like a sensory stimulus or pursuing a special interest.” This situation creates stress for families, affecting parent’s ability to rest or and limits the family from enjoying activities away from home.

Six tips to prevent wandering and wandering-related tragedies:

1. Secure your home 2. Use of a locating device in the child 3. Use of an Identification Bracelet 4. Teach your child how to swim and cross the street 5. Alert neighbors 6. Alert First Responders

The best overall strategy is a multidisciplinary approach which includes educating the child about safety and dangers using whatever means of communication. It is important that physicians, caregivers, and school workers collaborate to understand what is causing this behavior in the child and yield solutions or suggestions to ameliorate this situation. Hurricane Preparedness

T

he 2021 Atlantic hurricane season which begins on June 1st and runs through November 30th, is quickly approaching. Weather experts from AccuWeather predict that the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season will be above normal for tropical activity. This season is expected to deliver 16-20 named storms, seven to ten hurricanes, of which three to five are expected to be major hurricanes, reaching or exceeding speeds of 111+ mph. Since 2010, there have been seven Atlantic hurricane seasons with at least one storm formed before the official start of hurricane season. This highlights the importance of being prepared in advance of any storm, preferably in advance of hurricane season. Before the storm, tune in to local TV stations, radio, or other news sources for information. Have an evacuation plan in place for you and your family and be prepared to follow all local guidelines for evacuations and/or evacuation routes. Be aware that social distancing and other restrictions due to COVID-19 may impact your emergency plans (i.e. shelters). Consider any special needs you or your family have, as well as pre-registration that may be required for shelters and/or pets. Prepare emergency kits ahead of time to avoid the potential

of limited access to supplies and ensure emergency kits are easily portable should you need to evacuate. Recommended items may include: non-perishable food/ water to last at least three days, first-aid kit, prescription medication, personal hygiene and sanitation items, flashlights and extra batteries, battery operated radio, waterproof container with cash and other important documents, books, and games for recreation, baby supplies, pet supplies, etc. Before a storm approaches, protect your home by covering windows with hurricane shutters or wood if necessary. Ensure trees and shrubs are trimmed and clear away any debris from landscaping, rain gutters, etc. Reinforce garage doors and use sandbags to help protect against flooding, bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans, etc., unplug electrical equipment that is not in use, check generators for maintenance and be sure you have enough fuel, and check home fire extinguishers and first aid supplies. During a storm, always consider the safety of yourself and your family first. Stay away from windows and doors, identify a “safe room” in your home that does not have doors or windows and be sure flashlights are within reach of your safe room. Never venture outside during the storm as flying debris may cause serious injury or death.

Stay away from rising water and downed power lines. Do not call 911 unless it is an emergency and be aware that emergency responders may not be able to respond during the storm. After the storm beware of fallen power lines. If power is out, use flashlights or other battery-powered light sources for illumination to avoid potential risks of fire from any lit flames. Avoid driving if possible, as there may be debris or other hazardous road conditions. If traffic signals are inoperative, treat all intersections as though they are a 4-way stop. Remove any shutters from doors/ windows and make sure not to operate any generators inside the home. While the threat of hurricanes may be stressful to many, storm preparations don’t have to be. Having an emergency plan in place and being stocked with supplies can help make storm preparations less stressful for you and your family. To learn more about how you can be prepared for the upcoming hurricane season, join us for our virtual Hurricane Preparedness presentation on May 13th at 7:00 pm. Registration is available at https:// BSOFireRescuePublicEducation.as.me/ .

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness

M

By Sheriff Gregory Tony

ental well-being is just as important as physical well-being. Since first responders are often the first people someone in a mental health crisis interacts with, it is critical that we know what mental illness looks like and what to do when we see it. Dr. Vincent Van Hasselt is my mentor on mental health awareness for first responders. He is a professor at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) specializing in police psychology and a certified reserve officer with the Plantation Police Department. Dr. Van Hasselt knows firsthand that many mental health issues are silent and difficult to detect. Despite our wealth of knowledge and ability to perform our jobs safely and effectively, first responders benefit greatly from specific training dealing with mental health. As his former student, I have incorporated much of what Dr. Van Hasselt taught me into my work at the Broward Sheriff’s Office. One specific course that Dr. Van Hasselt is a big proponent of is Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. He has been teaching it since its inception in 2002. The training educates deputies to interact appropriately with someone who has a history of mental illness and gives them a better ability to deescalate a situation when needed. CIT-trained deputies can also recognize signs of mental illness better and have an increased sensitivity to what an individual living with mental illness may be going through. I believe this training is essential for all our deputies, and I will continue to push toward a fully-trained department. CIT training alone, though, is not enough to address the mental health challenges facing today’s public safety agencies. We must also confront our own mental health challenges. Many of our first responders, which includes law enforcement, fire rescue, detention and communications personnel, are used to helping others. Yet, they have trouble knowing how to find or ask for help for themselves. In comparison to the general population, first responders are up to three times as likely to develop PTSD or related disorders. These disorders can lead to severe complications for anyone if left untreated. For first responders who interact with the public in high-stress, often traumatic situations daily, an unchecked mental health issue can be disastrous. I needed to do something about it. When I became sheriff, Dr. Van Hasselt reached out to me. He, too, was concerned about first responders’ mental health and asked BSO to partner with NSU on an important program. Together, with the aid of a Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant and the tremendous help of Judy Couwels from our BSO Employee Assistance Program, we started the Peer Support Team, a progressive new resource for my agency’s employees.

We want to make it easier for someone who needs help to get it, and first responders are more likely to seek help from a peer. The Peer Support Team is comprised of 30 sworn and civilian BSO employees who are available at any time for fellow BSO employees. Our Peer Support Team members are trained in active listening skills and critical incident stress management. They can refer those in need to community resources, and they have access to licensed psychologists who can handle more clinically complicated cases. This vital program is entirely voluntary and provides support and help to employees who may be experiencing personal issues, distress from critical incidents or are suffering from stress. I am proud of everyone involved in its development. When we treat everyone with the appropriate methods of care, compassion and understanding, we all benefit. Service Equals Reward

FLEA & TICK PREVENTION By Miguel E. Cordova, DV

W

hat Are Ticks are not insects, but they are closely related to spiders, scorpions, and mites. Fleas and Ticks? There are approximately 80 tick species

Fleas and ticks are external parasites that can cause extreme discomfort for your pet and can also cause serious diseases.

Fleas are insects that are ubiqui-

tous in the environment—meaning they can be found almost everywhere. There are more than 2000 species of fleas, but the common cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the one that most commonly afflicts dogs and cats. A disease of concern that can be caused by fleas is flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), which is a severe allergic reaction to flea bites. Some pets are so allergic that even a single bite can cause a reaction. FAD makes pets miserable. In severe cases, it can cause severe itching and inflammation that, if left untreated, can lead to excessive scratching and chewing that can damage the skin. Secondary bacterial or fungal infections can develop as a result. Finally, in very severe infestations, particularly in old, ill, or young animals, fleas can remove so much blood through feeding that they can weaken the animal.

found in the United States, but only a handful of them are of real concern to pets and people. Some of these include the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), and the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis). The brown dog tick is the only species that can complete its entire lifecycle on a dog and can infest homes and kennels. Tick bites can be painful and irritating, but the real concern with ticks is the number of serious diseases they can transmit, such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. These diseases can cause significant illness and even death in both pets and people.

How Do I Know If My Pet Has Fleas and/or Ticks? Larger tick species can typically be seen or felt in the hair coat, especially once they are engorged after feeding. Deer ticks, on the other hand, are very tiny—about the size of the head of a pin in some stages—and can be harder to see. Repetitive scratching is a telltale sign

that your pet may have fleas. Adult fleas can be identified on the pet, but fleas in other stages of their life cycle (eggs, larvae, and pupae) can be harder to find. Adult fleas are tiny and can be hard to see, but flea combs can be used to remove fleas as well as flea dirt. Flea dirt is essentially flea feces, which is digested blood. To check your pet for fleas, run a flea comb through your pet’s fur and dump any hair and debris onto a white paper towel. Dampen it slightly with water. Any small, dark specks that stain the towel red are a clear indication your pet has fleas. Finally, excessive grooming is also a sign of a potential flea problem. Infested cats will groom themselves repeatedly in an effort to remove fleas. Never use flea control products intended for dogs on cats. Some medications can be highly toxic to cats. Only use products on the species for which they are intended, and follow all label instructions.
