It’s Tree Trimming Season!
T
By John Duka
here are more than 40,000 trees in the City of Weston. The beautiful canopy that provides shade in many of our city’s streets is one of the most desirable aspects of the community. It is also quite unique in South Florida. Unfortunately, in addition to being a welcome and beautiful feature of our city, trees can also provide projectiles for a major storm.
The upper canopy of a large tree can create a sail effect when under intense wind. This force can pull the tree out by the roots creating a devastating effect when the tree falls. This is why it is important to thin out our tree’s canopy prior to hurricane season. Coconuts can also be turned into projectiles in a strong storm. The City’s tree canopy is protected via the permitting process for tree removal. In the evaluation of a Tree Removal permit, priority is given to protected trees for the preservation or relocation, replacement, and/or payment into the Weston Tree Trust Account. Every effort is made to preserve and maintain natural vegetation within the City as identified in the City’s Comprehensive Plan.
If you need to remove a tree or have questions about any trees on your property, contact the City’s Tree Preservation Code Administrator, Bill Tesauro at 954266-6489 or via email at to discuss the specific issue on your property. All tree/ palm trimming, removal, relocations, and root pruning not done by the homeowner themselves, must be done by a City of Weston registered tree service provider.
