It’s Hurricane Season
T
he 2020 Hurricane season was one of the busiest on record. There were more named storms in the Atlantic than in any other year in recorded history. Thankfully, South Florida never had a direct impact! We had plenty to worry about with the pandemic. The latest forecasts expect 2021 to also be an above-average year for hurricanes. We all need to be prepared.
It Only Takes One Storm According to Florida State’s Tropical Cyclone Track Probability Tool, Broward County has about an 80% chance of having a tropical cyclone pass over us and a 30% chance for a major hurricane. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips:
⊲ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea
of where your family will stay if you leave.
⊲ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries,
cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information, and water.
⊲ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have
several days of adequate supplies in case you lose power and water supply.
⊲ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your
loved ones are informed.
Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer!

Why Now Is the Best Time To Look at Beauty & Health as One As a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Tamy Faierman continues to redefine what beauty, health and self-care means in today’s modern beauty climate.
F
ive years ago, Dr. Tamy Faierman set out to create a paradigm shift in today’s world of beauty. “This is a mind, body and soul approach to beauty and wellness,” explains Dr. Faierman, whose unique take on inside - out health and wellness has made her a rarity in her chosen field of aesthetic, cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. She has been in pursuit of defining an entirely new category in the space: Beauty Wellness. “My philosophy is that beauty and wellness are deeply intertwined.” I want to offer my patients life-changing services. Surgical procedures are of course a part of that, but I wanted to go beyond the scalpel. I really want my patients to consider a whole body approach to their beauty, one that includes their health and well-being, especially given our current times in a postCovid world. It is not about superficiality; we’re bonding beauty, health, and even physical and mental wellness. When we feel good, we look good–reaching beyond the aesthetics.” As women and men alike look for new ways to approach the perennial challenge of
aging and more and more brands scramble to grab market share in the exploding Wellness market, an opportunity has emerged for medical practitioners who can both understand and treat the expanding needs of their patients. A beauty and wellness expert, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, and founder of the Tamy M. Faierman Holistic Spa and Wellness Center, Dr. Faierman has created her own methodology for self-care in the modern age. Combining the most cutting-edge procedures from Western medicine with time-honored traditional practices from around the world, she offers patients an integrative approach that addresses the totality of their beauty, health and wellness needs. She often refers to this as “conscious aging.” Dr. Faierman recommends patients consider replacing words like anti-aging with conscious aging to change their perceptions of the aging process and to help create a new starting point for care with my patients. Treatments at her popular Holistic Spa and Wellness Center in Weston, Florida may include everything from acupuncture

and postoperative massage therapies such as Lymphatic Drainage, nutritional support, IV therapy, meditation and aromatherapy, to non-invasive skincare and health services that provide rejuvenation. The addition of her Holistic Spa and Wellness Center to her medical practice three years ago has created a physical space where her patients can experience and learn about wellness simultaneously.
A Natural Extension of a Global Mindset
In many ways, integrating traditional healing techniques from around the world with her extensive medical training and expertise seems a natural extension of a global mindset. Born in Israel to parents from South America, raised in New York City, fluent in English, Spanish, Hebrew and French, Dr. Faierman credits her multicultural journey as a crucial shaper of both her practice and her wellness philosophy. Her medical training in the U.S. focused on both general and reconstructive surgery. She received her Bachelor of Science magna cum laude from the State University of New York at Albany and went on to earn a medical degree from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY. After completing her thriving practice by training in General Surgery, she received a
A Center for Total Body Well-Being
The Tamy M. Faierman Holistic Spa and Wellness Center fosters personal transformation—combining the best of Eastern and Western medicine to advance selfdiscovery and total body well-being. The spa features a state-of-the art meditation room, a private IV therapy room, serene and peaceful rooms for holistic facials and non-invasive skin care techniques, herbal consultations, acupuncture, lymphatic drainage and reiki. Dr. Faierman also works closely with trusted and like-minded practitioners to address the full spectrum of her patients’ needs— from holistic aestheticians to nutritionists to functional medicine doctors.
The “Holistic” Plastic Surgeon With over 24 years of experience, Dr. Faierman continues to build her performing traditional cosmetic procedures, from breast lifts and minor facial surgeries, to body procedures like the “mommy makeover,” which is one of her trademark specialties. Dr. Faierman is also an expert injector and uses non-surgical, noninvasive procedures like dermal fillers, injectables, and laser treatments. But what truly sets her practice apart from other traditional plastic surgeons is her “whole body beauty, health and wellness” approach.
Nutrition, Exercise and Lifestyle Matter
Dr. Faierman stresses the importance of nutrition and exercise both before and after surgery as a non-negotiable part of a healthy lifestyle. Her patients will often work with an integrative nutritionist to help speed recovery after a surgical procedure– the right dietary modifications can be beneficial in the post-operative period, helping patients metabolize medications and heal more effectively. Regular exercise is also key – not only to help maintain the results of the procedure, but as a centerpiece of one’s overall health and wellness journey.

fellowship in Microsurgery and a residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at New York’s prestigious Montefiore Medical Center, University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
She explains, “Nutrition and exercise are imperative to sustaining excellent long-term surgical results and to your overall longevity. These go hand-in-hand. My recommendation is to begin to undergo a change into a healthier lifestyle as soon as one has the intention, preferably pre-operatively.”
feeling beautiful and healthy at every stage and every age of a person’s life. “This is about feeling great, happy and healthy in your own skin. Science and medicine have come so far in recent years and people are living longer, healthier lives. My belief and approach is that we can live our lives to the fullest by being healthy and finding our peace and beauty from the inside out, as well as from the outside in.”
Reshaping Your Image
Ultimately, Dr. Faierman’s commitment to treat her patients using a holistic approach that incorporates traditional healing practices with the very best of 21st century medicine is all about empowering the individual to take control of their bodies through acts of self-care. As she explains succinctly, “I live by the motto: reclaim your body and reclaim yourself!”

Dr. Faierman’s holistic facial, which has become a flagship treatment offered at the Spa & Wellness Center, is customized down to the last detail, beginning with a cup of organic herbal tea infused with an anti-stress tincture and ending with a guided meditation. The 90-minute session also includes LED facial rejuvenation and a revitalizing hand or foot massage. Dr. Faierman uses only clean, chemical free skincare products and works exclusively with companies that provide a commitment to purity and process, as well as aestheticians that are holistically trained.
Looking Inward
In conversation, Dr. Faierman emphasizes the importance of the inner journey of her patients. “It is important to remember that body, emotion and mind are all connected,” she explains. “Aligning our outer body often helps reconnect us to ourselves.” She is a firm believer in the power of

couple of years ago, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden began the “Million Orchid Project” to help restore endangered native orchids in South Florida’s urban landscapes. The Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society then joined the venture to help promote the project in Broward County and developed multiple partnerships to assist with the installations of native orchids in their environments. The Society is always searching for partners such as local schools, governments, neighborhood groups, civic associations, and other orchid societies to join the project and The City of Weston is proud to be one
of them. As a member of the American Orchid Society and an accredited judge, Weston’s Director of Landscaping, Thad Bielecki could not be more excited to have orchids gracing the community’s trees. Rich Ackerman, President of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society started collecting seed “in the wild” from Broward County Encyclia tampensis (Florida butterfly orchid) and began growing them via their partnership with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Bielecki then purchased 100 of the seedlings and brought them to Peace Mound Park where Ackerman and Sue Mitchell-Greig (also of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society) demonstrated how to properly install the delicate buds. “We at the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society are very committed to the reintroduction of native orchids to South Florida. We are a society dedicated to the care, conservation, and propagation of all orchid species,” explained Sara Singer, Weston resident and Trustee of the Board of Directors for the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society.
The goal is to have the first generation of reestablished orchids blooming throughout South Florida within five years. Throughout the project, Fairchild scientists will teach visitors, students, and the local community about the complexity and fragility of natural South Florida environments and the importance of habitat restoration. “I am ecstatic that the City of Weston completed an installation of Encyclia Tampensis, a native Florida orchid, at Peace Mound Park, and I look forward to additional installations throughout our city. Orchids are a natural addition to our beautiful city and its magnificent landscaping,” added Singer. “We look forward to more installations in Weston of native Florida orchids!”

ook out, there is a new game in town! Spec Tennis is exploding like the tennis boom in the 1970s and most recently like its cousin, Pickleball. Although many are now picking up on the craze, the sport was created 5 years ago in Northern California by Nate Gross and it is spreading across the country like wildfire.
ball. Between the lighter ball, heavier racquet, smaller court, and no court limitation, Spec Tennis offers a whole new dimension in game styles. The fun game combines elements of tennis, racquetball, beach tennis, pop tennis, table tennis, and pickleball.
Unlike a tennis racquet, a circular-shaped paddle with holes is used to play along with a low compression orange dot tennis
A local Spec Tennis group was formed a few months ago by Weston resident and tennis player Rick Marcotulli and three of his friends. Their small foursome has since grown to approximately 30 players every Saturday afternoon at Weston Regional Park and continues to expand by an average of 4 players a week. “Even though both pickleball and spec tennis uses the same court, the rules differentiate the two from a strategy point,” explained Marcotulli. “It is a faster-paced sport than pickleball. The racquet is a bit heavier and larger, and the ball is 50% lighter than a tennis ball making the combination powerful. You
can rip the ball and still keep it in the court.” Since it is not a technique-driven sport, all ages and skill levels are encouraged to play. The learning curve is short, the equipment is inexpensive, it is a great exercise with low risk of injury, and less intimidating than other sports. Additionally, it can be played on any hard flat surface and is a great social activity for a little friendly competition between families and friends. “When I am asked about the difference between tennis and spec tennis, I always start by saying, I can teach you to be a good tennis player in three years, but I can teach you to be a good spec tennis player in three weeks,” added Marcotulli.

not everyone wants to run track. The Weston resident and coach thought about a girls’ flag football team a while ago, but the time just never seemed appropriate.
ix years ago, Coach Antwon Chaney created West Express and West Express Elite track teams because he saw a need to promote the specialty sport in the area. Boys and girls were invited to participate in the select athletic program which encourages discipline as well as academics. Both these programs exceeded his and his students’ expectations and many of his runners have been chosen to run at their dream colleges and universities. Chaney’s success and drive to involve more students in his program had his mind constantly racing as well. In the process of figuring this out, the esteemed coach learned that
Being part of the athletic world professionally for decades, he knows that the teen years are critical for not just physical development, but for social and emotional development for both boys and girls in their middle and high school years. Most think that football is a boys’ sport, but Chaney knew differently. He was always one step ahead in the game. Females want to participate in a variety of sports just the same.
“Women want to be treated more equally now more than ever before. We have a female Vice President in the White House, so nevertheless I followed the momentum going on in the world. I decided this was the perfect time to develop a girls’ flag football program,” explained Coach Chaney. Chaney finally implemented the plan he had been dreaming about for quite some time. All girls in the 6th – 12th grades are invited to play in the first-ever area travel flag football team. There is no limit to how many can play. Every Sunday from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm practice is open at Tequesta Trace Park
located at 600 Indian Trace. The team even goes on college tours and just last month, the girls traveled to Dallas, Texas where they had the opportunity to be evaluated by Olympic coaches. The 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles will feature Flag Football as one of their new Olympic sports. “The time is now! The sky is the limit for these girls!” exclaimed Chaney.

Change the Way You Cook With Essen By Terry Jaillet

n the late 1970s, Wilder Yasci, the founder of Essen, traveled to New York from his home in Argentina. He discovered an aluminum saucepan that caught their attention and decided to create their own model at their foundry. After two years of trial and error, he produced his first saucepans, which they called “Essen”, which means “to eat” or “food” in German, a language linked to the roots of Mirta, Wilder’s wife. Essen’s small aluminum foundry has grown into the world’s largest cast aluminum saucepan factory with state-of-the-art technology. Over time, the Essen product line multiplied and incorporated new and unique designs and techniques. Essen’s fabulous cookware has now come to the United States. In fact, it is available in Weston Town Center. We sat down with Essen USA Operations Manager, Leonel Galvan to learn more.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Probate 101
P
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
robate is a lawsuit I file against myself after I die, at my own expense, for the benefit of my creditors and my heirs.
When a loved one passes away, his or her estate goes through a court-managed process called probate administration whereby their Will is evaluated by the court to determine if it was validly drawn and executed. Assets of the deceased are then collected, debts and taxes are paid and what remains is distributed to beneficiaries. Without probate administration, bank and investment accounts of the decedent are frozen. Furthermore, any real estate owned by the decedent may not be sold until authorized by the court.
Probate administration involves the following steps:
• Collecting and securing estate assets • Locating the original Will • Retaining an attorney (required by Florida law) • Filing of a Petition for Administration with the proper Probate Court • Giving Notice to Beneficiaries under the Will or to statutory heirs (if no Will exists) • Filing a petition to appoint a Personal Representative • Preparation of inventory and appraisal of estate assets by Personal Representative • Publication of Notice to Creditors in the local newspaper • Determination and payment of estate debts to rightful creditors • Payment of taxes, if applicable • Distribution of assets to beneficiaries or heirs
Probate administration is:
• Expensive. Typically 5% to 8% of the value of the assets in the estate. • Time-consuming. In south Florida, even the simplest probate administration takes up to 12 months or longer. • Open to the public. Court records may be viewed by all.
Can probate administration be avoided?
Yes. You can own all assets jointly with others, or have all accounts established with designated beneficiaries. While this approach seems like the best and easiest solution, it may not be. Joint ownership or beneficiary designations severely limit your ability to control exactly who will receive your property, when they receive it, and how the property is to be managed. Moreover, if you have young or unsophisticated beneficiaries, their inheritance may be squandered, subject to creditors, or lost through divorce. Creating and funding a revocable living trust is an excellent way to avoid probate administration. A revocable living trust allows you to control what you have so it is given to whom you want, when you want, in the way you want, and all at the lowest overall cost to you and your loved ones. There are situations, however, where a revocable living trust may not be appropriate. We recommend that you consult with an experienced estate planning attorney to explore all options and establish a plan that works for you.
Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

Hurricane Season is Here!
P
BE PREPARED
repare for an above-average Hurricane Season! That is the message scientists working at Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project have for residents of South Florida. The research group predicts there will be 17 named storms in the Atlantic Basin this year. It also gives a 45% chance that a major hurricane (category 3-4-5) will hit the east coast of the United States.
By Terry Jaillet
Last year was the busiest Atlantic hurricane season on record. There were 30 named storms and 13 hurricanes. It was only the second time in history that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ran out of pre-selected names and was forced to use letters from the Greek alphabet to name storms.
California coast; the cold water pushes the jet stream northward and leads to warmer conditions in the tropical Atlantic. La Niña conditions are associated with increased storm activity. The tropical Atlantic currently has near-average sea surface temperatures, while most of the subtropical Atlantic is warmer than normal.
The forecast includes three different models: an extended-range statistical prediction scheme, using 38 years of past data; an analog prediction model; and a statistical/dynamical model based on 40 years of data. All three models call for an active Atlantic hurricane season in 2021.
Colorado State’s seasonal forecasts were developed by the late Dr. William Gray. He was the lead author on these predictions for over 20 years and continued as a co-author until he died in 2016. In addition to pioneering seasonal Atlantic hurricane prediction, he conducted groundbreaking research in a wide variety of other topics, including hurricane genesis, hurricane structure, and cumulus convection. His investments in both time and energy to these forecasts cannot be acknowledged enough.
The Atlantic has averaged about 12 named storms and six hurricanes a year since 1981 when the center began keeping track. As is the case with all hurricane seasons, it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for everyone. We should prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much activity is predicted.

Ready For A Disaster? BUILD A KIT
L
iving in South Florida has so many incredible perks. For much of the year, our weather is unparalleled, our beaches are envied around the world and South Florida’s culture is second to none. Of course, with all that good, we do get a bit of bad: hurricanes.
As we stay on the lookout for upcoming storms, it’s important to think about what will be needed in the event of a hurricane. After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water, and other supplies to last for several days. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends each family create a disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-tocarry containers like plastic bins or large duffle bags. Make sure your items are stored inside air-tight plastic bags.

Hurricane Preparedness
T
STARTS WITH A PLAN
he 2021 hurricane season is expected to have more storms than usual. We all know what happens when a hurricane heads toward us: lines at gas stations form, grocery store shelves empty, and room rates at hotels north of us skyrocket. The most important thing someone can do to ensure they are safe in the event of a major storm is to create a hurricane emergency plan.
Should I Stay or Should I Go The first and perhaps most important thing to plan is whether or not you will stay or leave when a storm hits. If leaving is part of your plan, make sure you know where you are going long before storm season. Pre-arranging a visit with family or friends will make things much less stressful. Plan your evacuation route thoroughly
By Jon Duka
and what time of day you plan to evacuate. There are only two major highways that run north from Broward County. Driving at night may be a better idea than during the day if many people are evacuating. If you decide to stay, make sure your hurricane kit is ready. Be prepared for temporary power disruptions. Public water sources may become contaminated, so be sure to have plenty of bottled water. You might even want to fill a tub the day of the storm.
Home Preparations It is critical to prepare your home and property for a storm regardless of whether you stay or leave. Much of this work can be done long before a hurricane is imminent. Clean up and remove debris or any item that could become airborne and damage
42 / Our City Weston / June 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
property. Make sure hurricane shutters are easily accessible and that you have the correct amount to secure your home properly. Make sure you know who will be putting the shutters up in the event of a storm. Trim trees and bushes and remove ripe coconuts from trees.
Pack Your Kit Pack your hurricane kit or check last year’s to make sure everything is up to date. Stores typically sell out fast when a storm is on its way. Having everything you need ahead of time makes dealing with a storm much easier. Hurricanes can inflict horrible damage to our homes and communities. If we have a good plan, we can minimize the risk to ourselves and our families. Stay safe!

WESTON MUSIC SOCIETY
STUDENT MUSICIANS WOW CROWD
at Weston Town Center
O
n Saturday, May 8, the Weston Music Society presented an impromptu, causal event featuring student musicians in the Weston Town Center. Gina Catone, incoming Weston Music Society President, said. “I believed being directly in the middle of the Town Center would showcase the talented young people that reside in our city. I reached out to Angie Paulson, Director of Marketing and Events, and we worked together to make this event happen.” Gina contacted SebastianScharovsky, a former WMS scholarship student, Cypress Bay 2020, who agreed to perform for us with his saxophone. Samuel Palleija’s mother introduced him to Gina on Facebook. He is a freshman at Cypress Bay and he wowed the crowd with his violin virtuosity.
Diane Marett, WMS Vice President of Events, contacted RisingStarz, who brought vocalists for an hour-long performance. They attracted a crowd of onlookers.
Sephanie Becherelle organized band students from Cypress Bay and Western high schools and Tequesta Trace middle school. They represent a remarkable pandemic story. The Winds Quartet is half Western HS, half Cypress Bay HS, who stayed in touch musically through the efforts of Dr. Erin Gittelsohn, oboe teacher at FAU and member of the Miami Ballet Orchestra. In May 2019, she invited her students and Tequesta Trace band musicians to perform as small ensembles in her Garden Homes community in Weston, and these “ Saturday Circle Concerts” went on until last December 2020. The Red Suspenders, a saxophone quartet, and Groove Therapy, a jazz combo, are from Cypress Bay. Their band director, Brett Dawson, provided them with safe rehearsing conditions at school. Both these ensembles received a “Superior” rating at the County level in the Florida Band Association Solo & Ensemble festival. Current President Lou Marett said, “As you can see, it took a team effort to bring this event to fruition. We were delighted that four of our City Commissioners, Chris Eddy, Byron Jaffe, Mary Molina-MacFie, Henry Mead were in attendance. All expressed praise and thanked the Music Society for producing it, noting it brings the community together, highlights our student talent, exposes students to the arts, and contributes to making Weston a top 10 city.” Laura Dobrzanski, President of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, expressed her enjoyment this way, ““It was such a joy to have live outdoor music in our own backyard from local high school students. A big thanks to the Weston Music Society for putting on a fun, engaging event and giving our local music students the opportunity to share their talents with the community, it truly felt like a hometown atmosphere.” Gina Catone wrapped it up by commenting, “The WMS has supported student musicians for twenty-four years through our scholarship program. This event allowed us to expand upon that mission with live student performances in a casual, outdoor venue. We are so happy to collaborate with our students and we look forward to future events in the Weston Town Center”.

Girl Scout Shark By Beverly Perkins
ecently, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida held their Silver Award Showcase honoring the 2020 class of Silver Award Girl Scouts. Among the 82 Girl Scouts from throughout South Florida who earned their Silver Award this year, several of them were from Weston including Sophia Diaz from Troop 10811 with her project Sharkz4lyfe.
For a Girl Scout Cadette to achieve the prestigious title, which happens to be the second-highest award of Girl Scouts of the USA, they must make a change for the better. The opportunity to do so allows scouts to show their leadership skills and make a difference in the world. Enamored by sharks since 6-years-old, Sofia wanted to protect and educate others about the ocean’s most magical creatures. The passionate fish lover created a YouTube channel that features several bilingual videos (Spanish and English) educating kids about marine life, specifically about sharks. She created the videos not only to be informative but to teach young people about the importance of conservation and protecting our ocean and marine life. “I hope that with these videos, I can reach a larger audience and help inspire kids like me,” explained the ambitious scout. “I learned that not only Spanish-

speaking kids, but also adults want to learn about the ocean. My most viewed video is ‘Introduction to Sharks’ and the Spanish version has over 300 views.” Besides making videos and going on shark tagging expeditions, the brave middle school student also helped Shark Allies in their #NoFinFL campaign, by writing to all her local, state, and U.S. Congress elected officials to request their support to protect sharks. As a result of her efforts, Mr. Richard Stark, then FL 104 District Representative, co-sponsored a House Resolution that led ban Shark Fin Trade in Florida last year. “Girl Scouts has helped me expand and explore my passion and taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to,” added Sophia.

Falcon Cove Middle School Students
Show Philanthropic Spirit

By Beverly Perkins
n a time with an ongoing pandemic, distant learning, and lack of regular physical interaction, members of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Falcon Cove Middle School proved that nothing could get in their way from helping others. The inspiring group of students recently presented a $5,000 check to the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) to assist patients and their families. This was a result of their creative fundraising efforts, passion, and commitment to make the community a better place. “I’m proud of their leadership and desire to help the healthcare workers. They chose and adopted Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as their charity of choice and gave back selflessly,” exclaimed Stella Stringer, Falcon Cove NJHS advisor. “I am not surprised but blown away. We set a goal and they blew it away at such a large amount because they used it as a
personal connection during the pandemic.” Students were able to raise funds through the sale of Domino’s Pizza coupon cards. Not only did they ask family and friends, but they also marketed their campaign goal on social media. Additionally, the compassionate group donated art supplies, made over 300 handmade cards for Valentine’s Day, and created videos to entertain patients from the drama, band, and music departments. Furthermore, they raised additional monies to provide catered lunches to neonatal intensive care and COVID-19 medical teams at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The school hosted a celebration event complete with their jazz band and cheer squad to present their significant donation and highlight the honor students whose philanthropic spirit and efforts are making

a difference for others their age in the community. Attendees included State Representative Robin Bartleman, local politicians, school board members, and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital CEO Caitlin Stella. “Today was so much more than a donation. The way they did it was unreal in a weird year where they barely knew each other and the teacher leading them. They partnered with community businesses and used all their talents and all their creativity because they felt they would take care of their own children’s hospital during a time of a public health crisis,” expressed Stella. “I am overwhelmed by what we just experienced. It was a beautiful thing, and these are truly the future leaders of tomorrow.”

digital photo contest, and assisted in creating additional online forms for other Arts Council events. She expressed her gratitude by saying, “Wow, thank you so much! I’m truly honored, and I am so grateful to have worked alongside the Arts Council.” Three friends, seniors at Cypress Bay High School, Viviana Alvarez, Valeria Parra, and Camila Macias, have worked tirelessly at Art Council events. They designed and painted the graffiti wall for Celebrate the Arts and this year designed and painted the colorful wall used at this year’s Weston World Fest Drive-Thru.
P
resident Laura Dobrzanskl has announced that 5 outstanding students have been selected to receive the Arts Council of Greater Weston Volunteer Service Award for 2021. The award is based on exemplary personal character, superior leadership in volunteering, and maximum volunteer hours in service to the Arts Council. Laura says, “We truly value their contribution to our organization over the years and sincerely appreciate all they have done for us and the City of Weston at large.” Each student received a $300.00 award and all were recognized at a Weston City Commission meeting. Felipe Vajani, a senior at Cypress Bay High School, has taken a strong leadership role in managing various volunteer groups at several events and has been crucial in helping the day of the event doing whatever is asked such as hanging banners, greeting the public, and even wearing a mascot costume. He was born in Buenos Aires Argentina and came to the USA when he was nine. He says, “At first, I used to volunteer for the purpose of receiving service hours but that quickly changed. I started to attend events because they truly made me happy and I was in love with being given leadership tasks. It got to the point that I did not care about getting service hours and got more excited about volunteering and making new connections. My plan after high school is to attend the University of Central Florida and study architecture. I am extremely excited to see what the future holds!”
Viviana was born in Caracas, Venezuela and she moved to the United States at the age of 11. After graduating high school, she plans on studying architecture at Florida International University with a concentration in sustainable architecture. Viviana says, “I am very honored to be receiving this award. Thank you for recognizing all the work that I have put into the Art Council. It has been a pleasure to work with this team!” Valeria was born in Venezuela and moved to the US around three years ago. After high school, she plans to attend college and study in either the science or art field. She commented, “I do have a very clear idea that I want to dedicate my life to giving to and helping others as much as I can. I know that this past year has been hard for all of us, including the Arts Council as the normal events that take place throughout the year, couldn’t be held, so I can’t imagine the effort that had to be done for this award to be given. I am very honored to accept this award as I know how many amazing volunteers this organization has, and for me to be selected out of the great students that pour their time into the events really means a lot to me.” Camila is from Cali, Colombia, and came to the US in January, her freshman year of high school. n Friday, April 30th, 140 golfers gathered at the 34th annual FHVLegal.com Rotary Golf Classic presented by Freedland Harwin Valori Ryan, PL, to enjoy a spectacular day of golf, as well as fundraise for scholarships for local high school seniors. In fact, attendees raised nearly $150,000 for the Rotary Club of Weston scholarship fund.
During the FHVlegal.com Rotary Golf Classic, held at The Club at Weston Hills in Weston, golfers enjoyed 18 holes of golf and a luncheon. THE VALUE OF FAT IN
ASK THE EXPERT
COSMETIC SURGERY By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
T
he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques
requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants, is not applicable because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast
augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures.

By Ivis Mateos t’s important to model the behavior that we want to see in them and recognizing our mistakes is necessary. Parents must agree in advance to “agree to disagree” and resolve the differences they might have in front of the child, if they choose to argue in their presence. The child must see that parents can disagree yet, be respectful of each other. Children study their surroundings, test how far they can get away with behavior, and mimic what the adults are expressing around them. Children need constant direction and reminders of how mommy and daddy love them regardless of how the parents feel for each other in order to feel protected and loved. Our expert in education and preschool director, Ms. Molly Brousseau, believes “children are not given enough credit for what they truly understand. Even at an early age, you need to remember that the only knowledge the child is obtaining is that of what is shown to them.” A great way to show children good behavior is to remain positive in both discipline and rewards and be clear in what you are asking from them. One specific way to do this is to create a behavior or reward chart. A behavior chart should give specific areas where the child’s behavior will be targeted, i.e. “The child will follow directions during meal time”, if this is something they are struggling with, or “The child will keep their hands to themselves at playtime”. A behavior chart can be used in both the home and in school and it is important that parents utilize their classroom teachers as support for behaviors that may be appropriate at home. Children should be involved in the reward portion of the chart. They should be able to choose something they are “working” for both at home and in school that they want or desire. Giving them the choice allows them to feel responsible for the outcome; they know they only got to play with their favorite toy because they behaved during lunch. Rewards do not always have to be tangible items, but maybe, extra time at the park, a bike ride with mom/dad, or special weekend events. This allows for more of what I like to call “teachable” moments while modeling good behavior. Make expectations realistic. If a child is struggling with his behavior, a recognition of good behavior doesn’t need to wait until the end of the day. Also, they don’t need to lose what they have achieved if after mid-day the child’s behavior worsens. Remind him or her how well they did before and how you can work together to make the rest of day better.

Pandemic Lockdown is Expected to
Increase Nearsightedness M
yopia or nearsightedness is a common condition that causes one to see blurry at distance, which happens when light entering the eye doesn’t focus correctly on the retina in order to produce a clear image. Increased screen time associated with the pandemic lockdown is expected to increase nearsightedness. Rates of myopia, already the most common eye condition worldwide, have been increasing steadily for several decades. According to a study published in the Journal of Ophthalmology, half of the world’s population will have myopia by 2050. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of myopia in children. Research shows that the earlier it starts in children, the more likely it is that they will have more severe nearsightedness as adults. However, early detection and

of time staring at the screen. As people stare at computer screens, they blink less, and the tears which lubricate the eyes dry up, causing discomfort and blurry vision. It is important for everyone to take “blink breaks” and follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away and blink 20 times. This helps to refresh the eye. Proper sleep and hydration are also key. It’s not just about visual problems: according to studies in Britain and the U.S., screen time for children under the age of 2 can play a role in speech delays and affect the development of the brain. A study in an American pediatric journal linked the use of screen time to lower brain function in preschoolers.
Lack of outdoor time is positively associated with nearsightedness. Not only has the pandemic increased screen time, but it has also kept children indoors. Time spent outside has been found to reduce the risk of myopia and in combination with treatments such as certain medicated eye drops or special contact lenses, may also help to slow its progression. Children need more than 2 hours of time outdoors to reap the benefits of natural sunlight for their eyes. Even with correction, nearsightedness may continue to progress until the eye stops ⊲ Weston Family Eyecare is located in Davie growing around age 20. at 4472 Weston Road. FROM TEE TO GREEN
How To Practice Your Short Game
S
ometimes, golfers have to rely on a strong wedge play game to get out of tough obstacles or drive the ball those last few yards to the green. If you’re unsure of your chipping or pitching, or you struggle on bunker shots around the hole, the tips below can help you to improve your wedge game and ultimately reduce the number of strokes for each hole. Most golfers don’t get a lot of experience before they’re already playing their first round of golf with getting balls out of tricky bunkers and onto the green. These bunker shots require your short clubs, called wedges, to lift the ball out of the sand trap and back up onto the playing green toward the hole.
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Bunker Shots
Chipping & Pitching Over Obstacles
When a player gets caught in a sand bunker or green side bunkers, the best option to get them closer to or in the hole is to utilize a wedge club to knock the ball firmly but gently enough to get it up and out of the pit and onto the playing field without going too far past the target.
Sometimes it may be required that a golfer hit a lob shot, also known as a flop shot, to lob the ball over a particularly rough patch before the putting green. Many players try to imagine targets in front of them such as water or a bunker to carry the ball over and then try to identify strengths and weaknesses around the putting green in order to better and more rapidly improve their games.
Perhaps the most important element of sharpening a player’s technique when it comes to bunker shots is to assess and understand the point of entry drill for sand shots as well as adjusting to different sand conditions. Depending on the depth of the ball in the deep rough, the thickness and wetness of the sand, and the distance to a hole, a player will have to reassess the angle of attack to the ball required to gently drive the ball out of the bunker.
Similarly, players who find themselves in the rough grass just outside the putting green might have to chip or pitch their ball over the last few yards with a wedge in order to maintain control and guide the ball closer to the hole.
It’s important, too, for golfers to remember to not hit the ball too high or even too low as either will result in catastrophe — if he/she hits it too high, the ball will just drive further down into the sand trap, while if he/ she hits it too low, it might “scull” it far past the intended target (the pin) or even directly up in the air.
Shortening a player’s backswing and accelerating the club may also improve chipping as hitting the ball down will pop it up quickly before driving it directly toward the hole along the surface of the putting green. Similarly, practicing these shots can also help to improve chipping. It’s important for players to remember that a good and successful chip drill requires that players keep the club moving through impact in order to provide a full chip with the most control, and players should favor chipping over pitching when possible.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

Another common question is whether you can give away your ownership of the property. If you have a house with another person, can you distribute your half of it to other people? No, you cannot. The key part of this section is understanding that a beneficiary cannot be voided because of something you write into a will. Neither a retirement account nor a life insurance policy gets discontinued if you pass away. This is why you designate beneficiaries for both. If you don’t want your assigned beneficiary to receive your life insurance benefits or retirement account funds, then you will need to remove them. But you cannot change a beneficiary through a will.
Probate
Maybe someone has told you that you should do everything you can to avoid probate. Probate means that the court will administer your will.
Your will is required to go to probate if you don’t dispose of your assets by other means.
This is unavoidable. People may want to avoid this because you are bringing in a third-party, and many things in your will are personal. Your debts will be discussed as well as your assets. Probate can be expensive, and it can be a long process. If avoiding probate is something you value, talk to your attorney about creating a trust rather than a will.

Why Litigate When You Can Collaborate?
O
AWARDED 11 YEARS
By Evan H. Baron, Esq.
ften, I meet individuals who are more anxious about the prospect of litigation than they are about the ultimate dissolution of their marriage. This is likely a result of the public’s general perception that divorce proceedings are and always will be adversarial in nature. However, the State of Florida has experienced a paradigm shift. One in which families can address and resolve their divorce (or other family-related matters, such as child support, timesharing modifications, and Paternity actions), in a team setting which assembles for the sole purpose and goal of helping individuals separate without tearing their families apart. This paradigm shift is called the Collaborative Process. Contemplating divorce is very time-consuming and mentally taxing. The saying goes, “time flies when you’re having fun”, however, the same is untrue for individuals contemplating ending their marriage. The mental gymnastics required when considering all aspects and potential consequences of a divorce are physically and emotionally draining for anyone. This is especially true in cases involving children. Now, imagine that after careful deliberation, you make the difficult decision that divorce is the right choice for you and your family. However, with that choice, you are faced with the possibility that initiating a divorce will equate to “going to war” with your spouse or each spouse’s attorney going to war on their client’s behalf. This fear is often crippling and results in spouses delaying a divorce proceeding, even though all circumstances point to the divorce being necessary for the wellbeing of everyone involved, including children. Whether spouses decide to forgo a divorce should be based on the potential for reconciliation not because of a fear of the legal process embarked on when dissolving a marriage. Although adversarial litigation is a real possibility for some families, it does not have to be the reality for all families. The Collaborative Process affords families the opportunity to choose a more holistic approach to resolving their case. One that not only provides families with more control over every aspect of their case but also affords families peace of mind. The Collaborative Process is a non-adversarial alternative to obtaining a divorce, child support, and timesharing modifications or establishments of paternity. It provides a team setting made up of professionals, including a mental health professional, a financial neutral as well as the attorney for each party. Rather than appear at hearings before a Judge, families take part in team meetings that create an effective environment conducive to resolving cases efficiently and at a lesser cost than traditional litigation. The Collaborative Law Process Act and Rules is Florida Law, having officially gone into effect back in July 1, 2017. The attorneys at Evan H. Baron & Associates are collaboratively trained and able to assist anyone interested in this option. If you or anyone you know is interested in the Collaborative Process and would like more information on how to get started, please contact our office.

FROM THE STATEHOUSE
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE By State Representative Robin Bartleman
I
n February, I traveled to Tallahassee for the start of the legislative session. I successfully navigated three bills, secured over a million dollars in appropriation projects for our District, and helped pass Florida’s largest budget ever at $101.5 billion. On a positive note, my office successfully pushed our priorities to mitigate flooding, maintain student success, protect children from sexual assault, and improve our local infrastructure. After seeing the impacts of Tropical Storm ETA on District 104, I sponsored HB 901, legislation to deal with the impacts of inland and coastal flooding. HB 901 was absorbed into the Always Ready: Flooding and Sea-Level Rise Package. In a bipartisan effort to protect children from sexual assault, Representative PersonsMulika (R) and I passed Serena’s Law to close a loophole in our justice system. This bill empowers professionals to perform more
comprehensive background checks on employees working with our children. Finally, we acquired over $1 million in appropriation projects. These dollars will enable us to build a storm water pump station in Pembroke Pines, purchase two mobile storm water pumps for the South Broward Drainage District, upgrade the drainage and water quality system in Southwest Ranches, and build a safety guardrail on Appaloosa Trail. I sponsored HB 359 to pause the school accountability system for this year. It brought media attention to this issue and started an important conversation. Nothing was typical about this school year. Children faced housing and food insecurity, lost family members, and experienced disruptions in the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to school advocacy groups lobbying for this bill, an executive order was issued that incorporated language from my bill and provided relief to our schools, teachers, and students!
As a mother to a college student who receives Bright Futures, I was frustrated by the proposed restrictions to the scholarship. Fortunately, this bill failed; however, the scholarship program will no longer cover textbooks. I am happy to be home with my daughters and the residents of District 104. I welcome the opportunity to meet with you all to discuss concerns and ideas for future legislation. Please feel free to contact me at 954-668-3662 or at robin.bartleman@ myfloridahouse.gov.

SUMMER SAFETY
A
s temperatures heat up and summer quickly approaches, it’s important to take extra precautions to stay safe while working or enjoying the outdoors. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is especially important to help prevent heat-related illnesses. As many of us venture outside to enjoy various recreational activities, following simple safety guidelines while swimming, boating, riding bikes, or enjoying summer fun can help keep families safe. In 2019, the heat was the third leading cause of weather-related deaths in the US, claiming the lives of 83 people. Heat exhaustion results when the body loses excessive amounts of water and salt, usually due to profuse sweating. People most at risk for heat-related illnesses are infants and young children (especially if left alone in hot vehicles), people ages 65+, people with chronic illnesses or health conditions, and overweight people. Common signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include excessive sweating, pale and moist skin, muscle cramps or weakness, dizziness or fainting, rapid heart rate, and nausea or

vomiting. Heatstroke can occur when a person’s internal body temperature exceeds 103 degrees. Common signs of heatstroke may include headache, rapid breathing, flushed, dry or hot skin, no sweating, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect someone is suffering from heatstroke, call 911 immediately. Make efforts to move the person to a cool place and cool the skin with cold water as much as possible. Monitor the person’s breathing and be prepared to give CPR if the person stops breathing. To ensure your family stays safe while enjoying the summer fun, parents and caregivers need to be reminded about some simple safety tips to help prevent injuries. Children should be actively supervised by a responsible adult while swimming. Adults should avoid common distractions such as cell phones, books, magazines, or consuming alcohol while actively watching children in and around the water. If your summer adventures take you or your family out on a boat, be sure there is a life jacket available for each person. Consider having additional supplies such as a first aid kit in case of emergency. While riding on bikes, always be sure to follow the rule of the road, wear a helmet, and check bicycle equipment to
make sure it’s in good condition before riding. Avoid riding at night whenever possible, and be sure to wear bright-colored clothing and use bike lights to help make you more visible to drivers. To help protect the skin, wear sunscreen outdoors and reapply as needed. Consider wearing a hat or other lightweight clothing and use bug spray to help avoid insect bites. To avoid heat-related illnesses, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest times of the day, and take time to rest in the shade or other cool areas as needed. While the summer heat does bring about an increase in the potential for heat-related illnesses and injuries, the good news is that there are a variety of simple prevention strategies we can implement into our summer plans to help keep our families safe. To learn more about how to keep your family safe, please join us for our upcoming Summer & Fireworks Safety class on June 10th at 7:00 pm. n public safety, there is no room for error. As the leader of an organization responsible for ensuring the safety of everyone who lives in and visits Broward County, it is my responsibility to ensure we hold ourselves to the highest standards of accountability. That means we not only correct areas needing improvement, but we also examine ourselves to determine if what we are doing is working and, if not, make it right. Accountability is a promise I made to you on my first day as sheriff. BSO’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) is a new bureau within the Department of Professional Standards that will hold our agency accountable in all areas of our operation. The OIG provides oversight of all departments within BSO. This protocol ensures if we find problems, we work toward developing viable solutions. We are designing the OIG with transparency in mind. Our focus is to work more cohesively, fiscally responsible and operationally sound.
The OIG encompasses three divisions: •
The Division of Internal Affairs and Public Corruption ensures we thoroughly and objectively investigate allegations of misconduct against employees.
•
The Division of Internal Audit identifies ways BSO can operate more efficiently and be fiscally accountable.
•
The Division of Policy and Accountability conducts ongoing independent reviews of internal departments to ensure we exceed public safety standards.

ANIMAL HEALTH
Traveling With Your Dog By Miguel E. Cordova, DV
B
ring enough of your dog’s regular food and medication for the duration of the trip.
If you plan to travel with your pet, let your veterinarian know ahead of time; your dog may need a health certificate, or there may be other health issues to address.
How Can I Make the Travel Experience Better for My Dog?
Our pets share so much of our lives that many of us don’t want to consider traveling without them. Whether you are flying, driving a car, or RVing, sharing a trip with a pet can add richness to the experience. Proper planning can make the travel experience better and less stressful for you and for your pet.
What Food and Medications Should I Bring When Traveling With My Dog?
There are many factors you can’t control when you are on the road, but changing your dog’s food can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other problems that can be difficult to deal with while traveling. Try to bring enough of your dog’s regular food for the duration of the trip, and try to maintain the feeding and toilet schedule your dog is used to at home. If your pet receives medication, bring enough for the trip and try to maintain your regular schedule. If you are traveling by car or RV, bringing your dog’s favorite bed, blanket, or toys can also help make the trip more relaxing and pleasant for your best friend. If you are flying, you will need an airline-approved carrier for your dog; you should also request that your dog fly in a temperature-controlled cargo area. Many people escape the snow by traveling with their pet to warmer climates. Although fleas and ticks may not be a problem during the winter where you live, your dog may be exposed to these parasites at your destination. Make sure you’re prepared by asking your veterinarian for appropriate flea and tick control products.
Where to stay: Many hotels and rental properties allow pets. Locating proper accommodations ahead of time and being clear about fees (some places charge an extra fee for pets) can help minimize anxiety when you arrive. Travel requirements: Most airlines require a health certificate for pets that will be flying. The health certificate generally states that the pet is in good health and free from any infectious or contagious diseases. Don’t assume this document can be obtained from your veterinarian on the way to the airport! Your dog may need a physical examination, fecal exam, or other procedures before your veterinarian can sign a health certificate. Also, the certificate must be obtained within a certain window of time before you travel. Find out from your airline what their requirements are and plan to get the health certificate ahead of time.
Should I Sedate My Dog for Travel?
Giving a tranquilizer to a dog before traveling has pros and cons. Some would argue that if your dog is tranquilized, then he or she is not sharing the travel experience with you— so what is the point of bringing your pet along? Sedation can also have side effects, including lowering body temperature (which could be an issue if your pet is flying in the cargo area of a plane), and causing hypotension (low blood pressure).
Others may argue that a little light sedation can calm a dog that is overly stressed or excited while traveling and can therefore make the trip more pleasant for everyone involved. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Some dogs can be conditioned and trained to travel better if you have time to prepare them for a trip, so they don’t need sedation; but some dogs do very well with a light sedative. Remember that sedation does not address all travel issues; if your dog has severe motion sickness or gets extremely stressed while traveling, it may be better to arrange for a pet sitter or board him or her. Also, not every dog is a good candidate for a tranquilizer, so ask your veterinarian if sedation is a good idea for your dog. If you have never given your dog a tranquilizer before, give a test dose ahead of your trip. Pick a day when you will be home with your pet for most of the day. That way, if the medication causes excessive sedation or other negative side effects, you will be there to intervene and call your veterinarian for help. ⊲ Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On” Dr. Miguel E. The story begins at the Gazebo behind Deicke Auditorium at the library and takes readers for a short stroll while they discover the book’s adventures. The Story Walk is available from 10:00 am till 4:00 om Monday through Saturday at the library. “This is the first graduating class to have experienced an entire year of their educational program through a pandemic. These students have had to learn how to be a nurse under some challenging conditions,” added Dean Turpel. “I worry, every day, about sending my students out there to face conditions that are unprecedented for nurses. But we need them, and they are ready. These graduates are resilient and are eager to provide some relief to the exhausted and overworked practicing nurses.”
