When you fly now, you know it’s extra for everything — that airfare only pretends to be low.
But when a Senior Community offers luxury living for a seemingly-attractive monthly rent, you don’t expect to be Nickel-and-Dimed.
That’s why you’ll never see Nickel-and-Diming at The Palace. Here your monthly rent covers almost everything. Including all your meals, housekeeping, personal trainers, maintenance, and even Happy Hours with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
You won’t see a long list of extra charges. At The Palace, the price is the price.
Remember when everything about flying was to make you feel special?
That’s how living at The Palace feels today. Call or visit soon to see for yourself.

SOPHISTICATED SUSHI
IN PLANTATION
You don’t have to drive all the way to Miami to enjoy the best Sushi in South Florida. In fact, you can enjoy an exquisite fine dining experience with the freshest fish and tastiest creations right in the heart of Plantation. Renowned Executive Chef Jimmy-San is serving his fantastic cuisine at Otoro Sushi & Asian Kitchen located at The Shops at One Plantation on University Drive. The restaurant features exotic creations that Chef Jimmy-San has developed during his 30+ year culinary career. These include meticulously crafted sushi, certified wagyu beef, and classic Asian cuisine dishes.
Chef Jimmy-San began his culinary career in Atlanta during the 1990s. He quickly moved up the culinary ladder, becoming the Executive Chef at some of Atlanta’s most renowned restaurants, including popular hot spots Twist and Prime. During that time he perfected his
modern approach to the ancient Japanese art of sushi.
As soon as you step foot in the restaurant, your eyes will be drawn to an impressive, back-lit Mount Fuji landscape on the back wall of the main room. Between the beautiful, 20-foot-wide scene and the dining room is the space where the sushi masters do their work. A long, beautiful sushi counter made from exotic wood welcomes diners to have a seat.
Omakase
When you visit Otoro, be sure to order “omakase.” Omakase translates to “I’ll leave it up to you” in Japanese. According to the Michelin Guide, “few dining experiences are more revered” worldwide. Omakase is best experienced at the sushi counter, where you can immerse yourself in the experience. Chef Jimmy-San and his highly trained chef staff will prepare one piece of fish at a time, describe its origin, and answer any questions you might have about the dish. You will marvel at the precision of their work, the incredible concentration, and the beauty of their knife work.
An omakase meal is a multi-sensory, almost spiritual, experience. The chef will offer the perfect piece of fish for the season and is guided by his guests’ reactions. The presentation of each course is as visually stunning as the taste. Otoro also offers sake tastings to accompany the fish. This elegant dining experience is perfect for celebrating a special occasion or even a first date!
For those less adventurous, Otoro offers a variety of popular Asian dishes and traditional sushi offerings. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and offers take-out options.
Otoro is located in The Shops at One Plantation at 1447 S University Drive. Open Sunday through Thursday from 11 am to 10 pm, and Friday & Saturday from 11 am to 11 pm, we're here to serve you! For reservations, catering inquiries, or to learn more about our private event options, call 754-200-4560, visit www.otorosushibar.com, or stop by and try a bite!

June Joy: Embracing Sunshine, Pride, & Milestones
Welcome to June, the month that ushers in the vibrant South Florida summer! As the heat and humidity rise, we invite you to embrace the essence of our region. Don’t forget your sunscreen and a refreshing beverage as you venture outdoors. With our winter visitors bidding adieu, let’s relish the less crowded conditions and bask in the beauty of our community.
June 10th marks the last day of school for Broward County Schools, a significant milestone for many students. As high schools and colleges gear up for their graduation ceremonies, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our young people. These ceremonies are not just about moving on, but also about reflecting with pride on their achievements and looking forward with anticipation to the next chapter.
In recognition of graduation and summer vacation, we celebrate some of our community’s most impressive teachers. Be sure to check out the profiles in this magazine’s special “Leaders of Learning” section!
June is not just about graduations and summer vacations; it’s also Pride Month! This is a time to reflect on the progress made in the fight for LGBTQ rights. Let’s celebrate our diversity and strive for a more inclusive world.
Fathers across the country are looking forward to June 16th. Father’s Day was conceived in 1909 by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. It became an official holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. We are so excited about all June of fers; enjoy!

STUDENT ARTIST SHOWCASE EXHIBIT BIGGER THAN EVER
The Arts Council of Greater Weston, the City of Weston, and Friends of the Library were all delighted with the 2024 Student Artist Showcase. In its 17th year, this exhibit hung at the Weston Branch Library for the month of April.
This year, we produced a phenomenal exhibit with 236 pieces of student artwork from Pre-K through 12th grade from our 14 greater area Weston schools. The awards reception was also an increase in attendance; approximately 400 student artists and their families, school art staff, school administration, and community members came together to celebrate the showing. Arts Council Board members and City of Weston Commissioners presented each artist with their certificate of participation, ribbon, and a souvenir SAS 2024 cookie.
Art is not just about creating something beautiful; it is about expressing oneself, challenging perceptions, and sparking conversations. Each piece showcased tells a unique story, reflecting the diverse experiences and perspectives of our student artists. SAS Director, Gryssele Machicote shared, “How proud I am to have been able to coordinate an exhibit which celebrates the power of art to inspire, to provoke, and to unite us all. As we honor our talented artists, let us be reminded of the profound impact that art can have on our lives and our world. To all our student artists may your creative journey continue to unfold with boundless imagination and endless possibilities.”
This annual exhibition celebrates work being created in the classrooms of our Weston area schools. The art teacher at each school selects the works created by their students. Creative and critical thinking are essential skills to the current and future success of our students, as highlighted in STEAM, which includes the Arts. We highly encourage the arts in our schools to foster creativity and innovation in all of young artists.
This year we had 3 qualified judges from the arts community participate in the selection of grade placement winners: abstract artist Juliana Sierra, geometric abstract artist Migdaly Montenegro, and mixed media artist Lifrancis Rojas. Lifrancis
Rojas noted,
“As a juror for the Student Artist Showcase (SAS) in Weston, I had the pleasure of evaluating an exceptional group of young artists. Once again, Weston students have showcased their boundless creativity, passion, and mastery of various art techniques. This year, we were
Treated to a diverse range of mediums including acrylics, watercolors, graphite, charcoal, markers, collage and more. We saw surrealism, pointillism, geometrics abstracts, realism, landscapes, hyperrealism, and more.
The level of creativity exhibited by SAS artists knows no bounds. Judging was a challenging task as every artwork deserved recognition. My heartfelt congratulations to all SAS participants! You are all remarkable artists. Credit must also be given to your art teachers for their guidance and support in nurturing your talents.
The art teachers from Western High School commented, “Everything from the amazing art exhibit to the programs, the ceremony, the photo area, the image on the cookies, the certificates and ribbons were amazing.”

MANATEE BAY ROBOTICS TEAM SHINES WITH TOP AWARD AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The Robotics team from Manatee Bay Elementary School won the Think Award at the VEX IQ World Championship held in Dallas, Texas, last month. Their success at this competition highlights their hard work and the quality of the BCPS STEM+ Computer Science Programs, Applied Learning Department.
In addition to Manatee Bay Elementary, other Broward County schools also achieved notable rankings at various robotics competitions. Silver Palms Elementary School scored among the top 10% of teams at the VEX IQ World Championship, while Coral Springs Middle School placed in the top 12%. These

"Competing in the national and world championships is a tremendous accomplishment, and we are so proud of these student teams. Reaching this elite level of competition requires an incredible amount of dedication. The students and their coaches work hard all
year long perfecting their robots; participating in challenges at the local, regional, and state levels to qualify; and raising money for travel expenses. They did an outstanding job, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next season!”
The success of BCPS robotics teams demonstrates the district's commitment to providing high-quality STEM education and the importance of supporting students in their pursuit of excellence. Congratulations to all the teams for their remarkable achievements!

The 37th Annual Golf Classic was Weston Hills Country Club largest event ever!
By Deborah Richman-O’Connor
The Rotary Club of Weston held its 37th Annual Golf Classic at The Weston Hills Country Club on Monday, April 15, 2024. With 240 golfers in attendance along with countless volunteers, it was the Club’s largest event ever.
The event continued its tradition of supporting local students by raising significant money for the Rotary Club of Weston Scholarship Fund. Freedland, Harwin, Gander and Valori, PL has served as the title sponsor for the past 17 years. Their involvement has played an instrumental role in the tournament’s success. Michael Freedland, Founding Partner of FHV, and past president of the Rotary Club of Weston, was full of pride again regarding this year’s tournament outcome and is optimistic about its future legacy and success.
Michael said, “FHV has been committed to supporting the Rotary Golf Classic because we believe in investing in the future leaders of our community. It's incredibly rewarding to see how these scholarships can make such a difference in the lives of local and well-deserving students.”
The mission of the Rotary Club is to strengthen core relationships and unite business leaders by taking action through service. As a global organization with an international presence, "Rotarians" are committed to following certain principles that will serve the economically challenged, underprivileged,
and “in-need” population within their respective communities. They strive to make the world a better and more peaceful place one community at a time. Thanks to the support of sponsors like FHV, and the generous contributions from numerous other partnerships and donors, this year’s tournament raised enough funds to provide more than $200,000 in scholarships for 75 students in Weston and the surrounding areas.
"We are thankful for our sponsors, participants, and donors who helped make this year’s tournament a GIANT success," said Golf Chair and Scholarship Co-Chair Deborah O'Connor Richman. "The money raised will give local students with a financial need, the chance to pursue their dreams of higher education," said fellow Scholarship Co-Chair Steve Goldstein.
"It was awe-inspiring to witness a community come together and raise money for such a worthy and noble cause, said volunteer Nicolle Forrest. As volunteers, it was an incredible experience to watch this event come to fruition. Planning an event of this magnitude is no easy task. It was evident that the logistics, time, and efforts spent by the organizers and the planning committee to ensure every intricate detail was not overlooked and made this event a perfect and fun experience for everyone."
For those interested in joining the Rotary Club of Weston or learning more
about its initiatives, our weekly breakfast meetings are held every Thursday at 7:30 am at The Club at Weston Hills. These meetings provide an opportunity for fellowship, networking, and forging relationships with businesses and individuals in the community.

SHOW TO MANAGE SEPARATION ANXIETY
By Ivis Mateos
eparation anxiety is a common phenomenon that occurs in children during their preschool years, typically between the ages of 2 and 5. This is perfectly normal and is a sign that the child has formed strong attachments to their caregiver. However, it can be challenging for parents and caregivers to deal with, especially when they need to leave the child at preschool or daycare.
The good news is that there are several steps parents can take to ease the separation anxiety of preschool kids. Here are some tips:
1. Create a consistent routine:
Establish a consistent routine when it comes to drop-off and pick-up times so that your child knows what to expect.
This will help to reduce anxiety and make your child feel more secure.
2. Talk with your child:
It is important to talk with your child about what is going on. Explain to them what is going to happen and when you will be back. This will help your child understand that you are coming back.
3. Practice separation:
Before the first day of school, practice short separations for a few minutes, gradually increasing the time. This will help your child get used to being away from you.
4. Provide reassurance:
Provide words of encouragement and reassurance to your child. For example, tell them that you love them and that you will be back soon. You can also give
them a special toy or item that they can keep with them.
5. Stay calm and patient:
Be calm and patient during drop-off and pick-up times. If your child does cry, do not react with anger or frustration. Stay calm, reassure your child that everything is okay, and leave as quickly as possible.
In conclusion, separation anxiety is a common occurrence in preschool kids. However, by creating a consistent routine, talking with your child, practicing separation, providing reassurance, and staying calm and patient, parents can help ease their children's anxiety during separation. By taking these steps, parents can help their children feel more secure and slowly adjust to being without them.

EXCITING NEWS FROM WESTON GIRL SCOUTS Four High Schoolers Earn Their Gold Award!
The Girl Scouts of Weston are thrilled to announce a significant achievement within our community: four exceptional high school students have recently been honored with the prestigious Gold Award, the highest accolade in the Girl Scouts of America, comparable to the esteemed Eagle Scouts. This accomplishment is a testament to their dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence and service.
Each of these remarkable young women has demonstrated exemplary leadership, a passion for community service, and a genuine desire to make a difference. Their Gold Award projects, outlined below, showcase their ingenuity, compassion, and dedication to improving the world around them.
Ava Pounder, from Troop 10393, spearheaded "Spreading Love for Our Environment," a year-long initiative aimed at enhancing environmental education in Broward County Schools. Through engaging science videos tailored for 4th and 5th graders, Ava's project not only benefited her local school, Country Isles Elementary but also reached a broader audience online.
Elizabeth Farmer, representing Troop 10247, tackled the issue of puppy mills with her project "Project Pawprint." Through interactive lesson plans and club activities, Elizabeth educated her peers at Cypress Bay High School about the importance of responsible pet adoption and the welfare of animals in commercial breeding facilities.
Karina Torres, hailing from Troop 10811, founded the "Geography Club" at Cypress Bay High School to address the lack of geographical awareness among students. By organizing engaging activities and inviting guest speakers, Karina empowered her peers to explore the world around them, fostering cultural, political, and economic awareness.
Sarah Telleria, a member of Troop 10863, combined her passion for medicine and nature in her project "Health in Your Garden." Sarah established a medicinal garden at Flamingo Gardens, cultivating plants known for their healing properties and providing a valuable resource for promoting health and wellness within the community.
Achieving the Gold Award required each of these Girl Scouts to overcome significant challenges, including planning and executing a service project and demonstrating adherence to the Girl Scout Law. Their dedication and hard work, exceeding over 80 hours each, have left a lasting impact on Weston and beyond.

ENCOURAGING A GROWTH MINDSET IN CHILDREN THROUGH LANGUAGE EXPOSURE
By Dr. Katya Pizarro, Founder, ESL & Higher Education
ecent studies highlight the significant role parental attitude plays in fostering a growth mindset in children. Parents who embrace a "can do" attitude, viewing challenges as opportunities for learning and growth, greatly contribute to their child's development. Phrases like "You can learn how to do this," "It may seem difficult, but you'll figure it out," and "You may not be able to do it yet" instill a positive outlook, promoting metacognitive thinking in children. This mindset empowers kids to believe in their ability to overcome obstacles through perseverance and positive thinking. In today's rapidly evolving world, introducing children to world languages, cultures, and technological languages is crucial. Such exposure not only nurtures a growth mindset but also cultivates well-
rounded individuals with lower anxiety levels. By providing children with tools for self-empowerment, parents lay the foundation for their future success, emphasizing the importance of mastering the mind amidst constant change. While learning languages, parents should understand that proficiency levels may vary, but the emphasis lies in the development of skills through discipline, motivation, practice, and the application of effective learning strategies. This approach underscores the empowering realization that children have control over their own learning journey.
Exposure to different languages from a young age encourages goal-setting, consistent practice, and the ability to learn from mistakes. Ultimately, parents play a crucial role in nurturing their children's growth mindset, instilling a belief in their capacity for improvement through effort and resilience. This mindset not only
reduces anxiety but also boosts confidence, empowering children to communicate confidently in any language. By fostering a growth mindset, parents equip their children with the mindset that every experience presents an opportunity for growth.

PLANNING A BARBECUE IS LIKE PLANNING YOUR ESTATE
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of summer and backyard barbecues. Although a cookout may be casual, good planning is crucial. This is true for estate planning, too. A little planning goes a long way to prevent leaving you and your loved ones in a pickle:
The Menu - What Do You Own?
When you plan a barbecue, one of the first steps is to decide what foods to include on the menu. If you buy the burgers and hot dogs but forget the buns, the menu and party may be ruined.
Similarly, in estate planning, you first need to determine what you own. Estate Planning Attorneys usually provide a checklist to inventory all assets, from property to bank accounts, noting if they are owned individually or jointly with your spouse or another person. Strategies can then be suggested to provide for your loved ones and achieve any other goals you may have, such as gifting, minimizing taxes and distributing assets.
The Invitations
- Who Are Your Beneficiaries?
Just like you choose your barbecue guests, you'll need to decide who inherits your assets. It's not just about family; it could include friends or charities. You may wish to provide grandchildren with incentives to attend college or start a business. If a child has an addiction, you may decide not to provide them with an outright inheritance, and instead, create a trust designed to prevent them from using your hard-earned money to support their habit.
Serving Sizes - How Much Does Each Person Get?
At your cookout, you don't serve the same portions to everyone. Your six-foot-tall adult son will likely need a bigger portion than your two-year-old granddaughter. Similarly, in estate planning, you might not want to divide your assets equally among beneficiaries. We can help you tailor distributions based on individual needs and circumstances, avoiding potential conflicts down the line. Depending on what you own, it may also be important to give certain accounts or property to one beneficiary and not the others. For example, if you have a property or business in which only one child is actively engaged, splitting ownership among multiple siblings may set them up for fights and destroy relationships.
Extra Touches - Personalizing Your Plan
Just as you add extra touches such as umbrellas, tablecloths, or strings of lights to make your barbecue special, you can personalize your estate plan, such as writing letters to loved ones and specifying who gets sentimental items, such as jewelry or artwork. These gestures can make your plan more meaningful and help prevent family disputes.
Lettuce help you plan: call us so we can ketchup!
Don't wait until you're in hot water to plan your estate. Just like a well-prepared barbecue, a thoughtfully crafted estate plan ensures everyone's satisfaction. Call us today to spill the beans about your estate planning goals, and we will help you create an estate plan that will satisfy your craving to provide a secure future for yourself and your family.

Students Aid Patients & Families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital
National Junior Honor Society students at Falcon Cove Middle School in Weston have been busy selling Domino’s coupon cards, but it’s not because they’re hungry for pizza.
Students used the discount cards to fuel a fundraising campaign for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. Their efforts resulted in a $5,000 donation that will be used to purchase car seats for needy families that wouldn’t otherwise have a safe way to transport small children.
“We see lots of children that come that are injured and their families don’t have an age-appropriate car seat installed, either because they don’t have the financial resources or the knowledge of their importance,” said Dr. Oliver Lao, medical director for pediatric trauma at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “It can be a vicious cycle when kids don’t have a car seat to keep them safe after being discharged from the hospital and injuries keep happening.”
Dr. Lao, whose daughter, Isabella, is the president of the National Junior Honor Society at Falcon Cove, says it’s the goal of the “Car Seats that Care” program that every child leaves the children’s hospital in a properly-fitted, properly installed car seat.
This is the fourth consecutive year Falcon Cove honor society students have made a $5,000 donation during the time the school has participated in the Joe DiMaggio All-Stars program. Previous contributions have supported the pediatric facility’s expansion, equipment used in its Child Life Zone, art, and bibliotherapy programs.
“The kids at our school are very selfless and very giving,” said Stella Stringer, the faculty advisor to Falcon Cove’s honor society. “They just want to help kids, so it’s very easy for them to be motivated and inspired to help Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital because they’ve been treated there, know of someone who has, or know the reputation of the hospital.”
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (www.jdch.com) is one of the nation’s
leading pediatric hospitals, offering a comprehensive scope of healthcare services and programs in a caring, compassionate setting designed specifically for children. A level one trauma center, it combines advanced technology, the expertise of board-certified specialists, and a patient and family-centered approach to heal the body, mind, and spirit of those it touches.
The hospital’s nonprofit foundation focuses on philanthropy to positively impact patients, families, and underwrite programs, facilities, and equipment that support the pediatric facility’s mission.

WESTON LIBRARY UNVEILS NEW CAREGIVER AND YOUTH SECTION
A Haven for Families
The Weston Library, in collaboration with the Weston Friends of the Library (WFOL), celebrated the grand opening of its new Caregiver and Youth Section on March 28, 2024.
Under the leadership of Community Library Manager Kristin Delacoste, the project to create a dedicated space for caregivers and children under 12 began last year. After six months of remodeling, a cozy corner of the library now offers caregivers a welcoming environment to unwind, read, and engage with children through educational toys and activities.
To furnish the new area, the library sought assistance from WFOL, requesting around $10,000 for sectional seating and other essentials. WFOL generously contributed, drawing from donations received in memory of Lexi Cohen, a cherished member who had served as treasurer and board member for many years. In recognition of WFOL's support and Lexi's legacy, a plaque now
adorns the Caregiver and Youth Section.
Comprising approximately 25 dedicated volunteers from the Weston community, WFOL plays a vital role in advocating for the library and funding initiatives like the Caregiver and Youth Section, as well as annual programming. Additionally, WFOL manages the Book 'n Snack Shop within the library premises.
One of the library's highlights is its weekly storytime sessions, catering to different age groups: Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for ages 1-5, and Thursdays from 3-4 p.m. for ages 5-12. For a comprehensive listing of programs for adults, teens, and children, interested individuals can check the library's website or visit in person.
The successful event was orchestrated by Ariane Cohen, WFOL's vice president. Those interested in volunteering for the library or WFOL can inquire directly at the Weston Library.

CELEBRATING EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATORS
Our City believes in celebrating the individuals who profoundly impact our community. This June, we are excited to dedicate a special section of our publication to Teacher Appreciation. This section will highlight the extraordinary efforts and accomplishments of some educators who go above and beyond to shape our children’s future.
Teachers are the heart of our community, dedicating countless hours to ensure that each student receives the best education possible. Their commitment extends beyond the classroom, touching lives in ways that often go unnoticed. In this special section, we will share the stories of some of our most inspiring teachers, showcasing their dedication, passion, and innovative educational approaches.
Many highly successful people credit teachers who impacted them as children. One particularly successful person who credits a teacher’s influence is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has often spoken about her fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan, who she says was the first person to make her feel valued and help her believe in her own potential.

Maria Garcia has been a devoted educator for more than 19 years. As a kindergarten teacher at Greentree Prep Charter School in Southwest Ranches, she always puts her students first, ensuring they get the attention they need to succeed in school.
Mrs. Garcia is known for her exceptional performance year after year. Her aim is to help her students reach their highest potential, and she consistently goes above and beyond to achieve this. We are incredibly proud of Mrs. Garcia for her outstanding performance, her loving and nurturing approach, and her commitment to teaching beyond the state standards.

For over half a century, our community has celebrated Pride, which commemorates the Stonewall Uprising on June 28th, 55 years ago. Since 1969, we have made great strides in our quest for equality, from marriage, the right to adopt and build a family, jobs, housing, and healthcare security to the right to serve in the military while being true to ourselves—all in under 55 years. The public acceptance of our community has been swift but not complete and certainly not without pushback.
The last few years with book bans and “Don’t Say Gay” legislation were stark reminders that complacency is not an option

and “Silence = Death” still looms overhead. The differences between 2024 and 1969 are enormous, but we cannot take our eyes off those filled with prejudice, hate, and anger. As other nations institute the death penalty for their LGBTQ+ populations, we can be sure that like-minded people are in our midst as well. Keeping our organizations well-funded, our institutions healthy, and our community informed is not simply an option but a necessity.
As we look to the future and the next 50+ years, we can celebrate that we are a talented community able to stand up for itself. We must never forget that our community thrives in every other community regardless of color, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or place of origin. We are on all sides of every issue and carry the good and bad of the world in which we live. Those shared experiences give us strength. It allows us to be the world’s unifiers, even in these most divided times.
We even have a month dedicated to our efforts toward global unification: June is Pride Month. We have the opportunity to bring everyone under the rainbow flag, for those colors represent not only the LGBTQ+ population but everyone. We know how these other people think, how they feel, and why they act as they do. They are our parents, siblings, neighbors, and friends. We work with and live with them, and by welcoming them under our rainbow tent, we give them the communit y they seek.
Yes, we have a great deal more to do to protect our LGBTQ+ family from those who fear us because of who we love. Still, by being more inclusive, by being more welcoming, by reminding
others we are all more alike than we are different, and by holding to our belief that we are all the colors of the rainbow, we can weaken the grasp of hate and expand the meaning of liberation and Pride. So, this June, wherever you are, invite everyone you know to Pride; it should not matter who they love.

ORTHOKERATOLOGY
By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician
Orthokeratology (also known as ortho-k) is a treatment that relies on custom-designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the front surface of the eye, or the cornea to improve vision. It’s like orthodontics for the eyes and is often compared to dental braces. The patient wears these lenses only while they sleep. After waking, the patient will remove the contact lenses and can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or contact lenses. Vision improvement is reversible but can be maintained if you continue wearing the lenses as directed. Ortho-k is a safe, non-surgical alternative to LASIK surgery and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The shape of the
cornea dictates much about the quality of a person’s vision.
Myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) are so-called “refractive errors” and are caused by the shape of the cornea and the length of the eyeball. Astigmatism is another condition caused by the shape of the cornea, this time by irregularities in the curvature of the eye. Presbyopia is a natural annoying part of aging, a gradual worsening of near vision that occurs around age 40 and continues until around age 65. Ortho-k can be used to correct all of these conditions.
Ortho-k has also been clinically proven to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Myopia is more than an inconvenience. It can pose a serious risk to your child’s long-term vision. As a child develops and the myopia rapidly progresses, the child is at a higher risk of developing dangerous eye diseases later in life.
These include retinal detachments, macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts. The higher the myopia, the higher the risk of these sight-threatening complications. Thankfully, myopia management can help.
Myopia management solutions include ortho-k, multifocal contact lenses and atropine eye drops. New research states that giving children low-dose atropine eye drops at bedtime can slow the progression of myopia. Children who receive atropine drops will still need glasses. Soft Multifocal contact lenses have also been shown to decrease the progression of nearsightedness. MiSight 1 day is the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lens to slow the progression of myopia in children. If you have any questions about our ortho-k, our myopia treatment options or would like to schedule an appointment, you can contact us at 954-888-9393.

EMBRACING CHANGE
NAVIGATING THE JOURNEY OF SELLING YOUR FAMILY HOME
By Rose Sklar
For many of us, our family home is more than just four walls and a roof; it's a treasure trove of memories, capturing the joys and sorrows of decades gone by. But as time moves forward, circumstances change, and selling the family home can feel overwhelming, especially for those who've lived there for years, if not decades.
To those feeling anxious about moving on, I get it. Leaving behind the familiar for the unknown stirs up a lot of emotions. But remember, while unsettling, change often brings growth and new opportunities.
One big challenge is the empty nest syndrome. The once lively home, filled with kids' laughter and chatter, now
feels quiet as they embark on their own journeys. It's natural to feel a sense of loss and nostalgia. However, your children's departure can open a new chapter in your life, filled with possibilities for personal growth and exploration.
Another concern might be the hope that adult children will return, making it hard to leave the family home. While it's understandable to want to keep a space for your loved ones, it's crucial to consider if maintaining a large, empty house is practical. Your children may have moved on and have different living arrangements. Holding onto unused rooms and cluttered closets in anticipation of their return might only weigh you down.
Think about those empty rooms and unused bathrooms. While they hold sentimental value, they represent wasted space and unnecessary upkeep. Imagine transitioning to a home tailored to your current needs—a space where every room serves a purpose and
makes life more manageable.
Downsizing to a more practical and efficient living space can offer financial relief. Say goodbye to hefty utility bills and costly maintenance expenses associated with an aging home. Consider moving into a newer, single-story residence that requires less upkeep and minimizes the risk of unexpected repairs.
Embracing change takes courage and resilience but also opens the door to newfound freedom and fulfillment. As you think about selling your family home, envision the possibilities ahead—a home that's not just a relic of the past but a springboard for a vibrant and fulfilling future.
So, while selling the family home may seem daunting, facing your fears and embracing the potential for growth and renewal is essential. By letting go of the past and welcoming change, you can start a new chapter filled with adventure, discovery, and the freedom to live on your own terms.

Heel Pain in Children
Does your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.
CAUSE
• Growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel
• Over-activity in children commonly between the ages of 8 and 14
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
• Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle
• Flatfeet
• Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot
• Growth spurts
SYMPTOMS
• Discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity
• Occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle
• Stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running
• Pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity
• Pain is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time, and then tries to get up and walk
SIGNS
• Tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel
• Walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground
• Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel
• Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens
TREATMENT
• Modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot
• Rest and ice
• Stretching exercises
• Proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel
• Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament
• Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone
• Custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment
• Occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing
• Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate

How To Practice Your Short Game
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
The short irons and wedges present the most variability and room for creativity of all the clubs in your bag. With lots of loft on these clubs, we can open or close the club face, and move ball position forward and backward to produce a wide array of shots. I encourage you to practice and to experiment with all sorts of different lies, ball positions, and situations with these clubs.
Better players are extremely accurate with these clubs in terms of both direction and distance control. They can control trajectory, and have experience hitting all sorts of shots in many different situations.
Standard set up with short irons is with the ball in the middle of your stance and your feet shoulder width apart. The first step is to assess your lie. If the lie is poor, in taller grass, or presenting limited access to the back of the ball, you want to choke down on the club and push the ball an inch or two back in your stance. This adjustment in your set up will promote a more descending angle of attack, more control of the club head, and a better chance for clean contact. There is plenty of loft on the club, so don’t worry about the ball getting up in the air.
With a good lie, more confident players will take dead aim with short irons. Be very precise in setting your club face angle at address and ensuring that your body lines are aligned perfectly. We are not looking for power with our short irons, so swing the club with simplicity, ultimate control, and maintain perfect balance throughout your swing. There should be no over swinging with these types of shots. If you need to hit the ball further, simply choose a longer club. Turn your body away from the ball in one piece and load onto the inside of your right leg with back facing the target.
Simplicity is best. Because the focus is on precision rather than power, there is no need to shift your weight radically from one side to the other. From the top, shift target-ward, approach impact from the inside, strike the ball in a slightly descending motion just prior to the swing bottoming out. We finish in good balance on our left side, with belt buckle facing the target and right heel completely off the ground. Hold your finish and observe the shot’s trajectory and shape to completion.
In summary, the focus on short iron play is absolute precision – controlling not only direction but the distance of each shot. Take the same athletic posture and stance suitable for maintaining balance throughout your swing. Typically, the ball should be centered in your stance, but it is very important to assess your lie and make accommodations as necessary. Choke down and move the ball back in your stance with a poor lie. Get very precise with your set up in terms of aligning the club face and your body position. Make a controlled golf swing, striking the ball with a slight descending angle of attack, and maintaining perfect balance throughout.
Practice this on the driving range and also consult your local PGA Professional to help you improve your short game as well.

BTraveling With Your Dog
ring enough of your dog’s regular food and medication for the duration of the trip. If you plan to travel with your pet, let your veterinarian know ahead of time; your dog may need a health certificate, or there may be other health issues to address.
How Can I Make the Travel Experience Better for My Dog?
Our pets share so much of our lives that many of us don’t want to consider traveling without them. Whether you are flying, driving a car, or RVing, sharing a trip with a pet can add richness to the experience. Proper planning can make the travel experience better and less stressful for you and for your pet.
What Food and Medications Should I Bring When Traveling With My Dog?
There are many factors you can’t control when you are on the road, but changing your dog’s food can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other problems that can be difficult to deal with while traveling. Try to bring enough of your dog’s regular food for the duration of the trip, and try to maintain the feeding and toilet schedule your dog is used to at home. If your pet receives medication, bring enough for the trip and try to maintain your regular schedule.
If you are traveling by car or RV, bringing your dog’s favorite bed, blanket, or toys can also help make the trip more relaxing and pleasant for your best friend. If you are flying, you will need an airline-approved carrier for your dog; you should also request that your dog fly in a temperature-controlled cargo area.
Many people escape the snow by traveling with their pet to warmer climates. Although fleas and ticks may not be a problem during the winter where you live, your dog may be exposed to these parasites at your destination. Make sure you’re prepared by asking your veterinarian for appropriate flea and tick control products.
How Should I Plan for Travel With My Dog?
Spontaneity and family emergencies aside, most of us wouldn’t take a trip without planning some things ahead of time.
By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
The same thing applies when traveling with your dog.
Where to stay: Many hotels and rental properties allow pets. Locating proper accommodations ahead of time and being clear about fees (some places charge an extra fee for pets) can help minimize anxiety when you arrive.
Travel requirements: Most airlines require a health certificate for pets that will be flying. The health certificate generally states that the pet is in good health and free from any infectious or contagious diseases. Don’t assume this document can be obtained from your veterinarian on the way to the airport! Your dog may need a physical examination, fecal exam, or other procedures before your veterinarian can sign a health certificate. Also, the certificate must be obtained within a certain window of time before you travel. Find out from your airline what their requirements are and plan to get the health certificate ahead of time.
Should I Sedate My Dog for Travel?
Giving a tranquilizer to a dog before traveling has pros and cons. Some would argue that if your dog is tranquilized, then he or she is not sharing the travel experience with you— so what is the point of bringing your pet along? Sedation can also have side effects, including lowering body temperature (which could be an issue if your pet is flying in the cargo area of a plane), and causing hypotension (low blood pressure). Others
may argue that a little light sedation can calm a dog that is overly stressed or excited while traveling and can therefore make the trip more pleasant for everyone involved. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Some dogs can be conditioned and trained to travel better if you have time to prepare them for a trip, so they don’t need sedation; but some dogs do very well with a light sedative. Remember that sedation does not address all travel issues; if your dog has severe motion sickness or gets extremely stressed while traveling, it may be better to arrange for a pet sitter or board him or her. Also, not every dog is a good candidate for a tranquilizer, so ask your veterinarian if sedation is a good idea for your dog.
If you have never given your dog a tranquilizer before, give a test dose ahead of your trip. Pick a day when you will be home with your pet for most of the day. That way, if the medication causes excessive sedation or other negative side effects, you will be there to intervene and call your veterinarian for help.

NEW LAW AIMS TO PROTECT FIRST RESPONDERS
By State Representative Robin Bartleman
Our first responders put their lives at risk every day to protect and save us and every single one of them deserves to come home safely to their families. For this reason, I sponsored House Bill 463 – Lights Displayed on Fire Department Vehicles which was signed into law by Governor DeSantis. This law aims to keep our brave firefighters and first responders safe when they respond to an emergency scene - especially those on dark highways in hazardous weather conditions.
Multiple national studies have looked at the effectiveness of emergency lighting and have found that blue and red emergency lights are rated as the most visible colors. Red lights are most effective during the day and blue lights are most effective at night. The Florida Fire Chiefs Association has requested and advocated for their fire trucks to use blue lights.
Previously, Florida statute only allowed law enforcement vehicles to utilize blue lights, so I reached out to law enforcement agencies to discuss this language and collaborate. This new law received the support of the Florida Sheriffs Association, I.U.P.A. Local 6020, as well as other agencies.
This new law allows for the use of blue lights on government-owned fire department vehicles, with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 24,000 pounds, and the lights are restricted to the rear of the vehicle; it excludes vehicles of fire patrols and volunteer fire departments.
This new law goes into effect on July 1, 2024, and marks a significant stride towards bolstering the safety of our dedicated first responders. Personally thank the For Paul Foundation, firefighters, and fire chiefs who advocated for the passing of this law.
It is an honor to serve you and we are here to assist with any issues or concerns you may have. I welcome ideas and suggestions. Feel free to contact me anytime at Robin.Bartleman@myfloridahouse.gov or our office at (954) 424-6828. You can also reach me on my personal cell at (954) 668-3662.

GREETINGS FROM YOUR Chamber President!
By Patty Archer
As we approach the beginning of hurricane season here in South Florida, it's essential for businesses to prioritize emergency preparedness to ensure the safety of employees, protect assets, and maintain operations during times of crisis. Hurricanes, power outages, and flooding are all potential threats that can significantly impact business continuity.
First and foremost, businesses should have a comprehensive emergency plan in place that outlines procedures for evacuations, communication protocols, and steps to safeguard critical infrastructure and data. Prepare lists of important items, make copies of essential documents, and rely on backup systems whenever possible. Regular training and drills can help ensure that employees are familiar with emergency procedures.
When it comes to hurricanes, businesses should closely monitor weather forecasts and take proactive measures to secure their facilities, such as boarding up windows, securing outdoor equipment, and relocating valuable assets if flooding is a concern.
In the event of flooding, businesses should have measures in place to protect against water damage, such as sandbagging doorways and installing flood barriers. Additionally, businesses should establish communication channels with employees, customers, suppliers, and local authorities to provide updates and coordinate response efforts during emergencies. Always have a backup plan for how and when you’ll reopen after a weather event.
By taking proactive steps to prepare for hurricanes, power outages, and flooding, businesses can minimize the impact of disasters and increase their resilience in the face of adversity. In the event of a hurricane, the Chamber will be ready to assist before and after the weather event to help businesses get back up and running as quickly as possible.
Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of Leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. For more information and our event calendar, visit www.westonflchamber.com.
Yours in Service,
Patty Archer
