S
ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. This year was a bit different than most. Many students have not attended in-person classes for more than 18 months. This year, the transition back to school will be unlike any other. Most local kids return to school on August 18th this year. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There is a myriad of activities and opportunities from which families to choose. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools, or online learning. Having so many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear; Our City is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains helpful information on the best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in the area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of. The material is curated to provide our readers with a valuable guide to help them get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started!

FEATURE STORY
International Dance Academy
Simply The Best
T
he International Dance Academy (IDA), Florida’s premier ballet school, is abuzz with excitement as it begins its 22nd year serving our community with excellence in Classical Ballet training. IDA is the most prestigious educational dance center in the area. In addition to the directors, who are active teachers and choreographers, IDA boasts an exceptionally well-trained and qualified international faculty. The premises are outstanding with 5,500 sq. ft of dedicated space; three studios, sprung flooring, mirrors, and air-conditioning. IDA is the only school in South Florida to offer the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) instruction and certification, under the patronage of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Students from the Academy achieve excellent results with the majority receiving the highest mark of distinction for their formal examinations. The world recognized R.A.D. diploma sets the pupils a step above the rest in college applications or further advancement. Dancers achieving Distinction for their Advanced II examinations take part in an international competition, the Margot Fonteyn, held annually in a city around the world. IDA is proud of the many who qualified and those who competed on the world-stage representing IDA and America. At IDA, dancers are highly motivated and learn to have confidence in themselves. They are educated in ballet technique, mostly in the French language. They are exposed to magnificent music by the masters and experience the valuable lessons and excitement of performing on stage and all that goes into producing a professional quality ballet performance.
18 / Our City Weston / August 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
IDA is proud to produce dancers who are contracted to professional ballet companies immediately after graduation. Most graduates, on the strength of their dance ability, enter prestigious colleges and universities such as Notre Dame, Princeton, Yale, and Penn State, to mention just a few. It is an accepted fact that ballet students’ discipline and dedication set them apart from other students academically. IDA faculty are also certified in Progressive Ballet Technique (PBT) which is taking the world by storm offering cutting-edge strength training to students ages nine and up. The International Ballet Company, a non-profit youth organization affiliated with IDA, provides its dancers, tiny tots to pre-professional, the opportunity to take the pure classical ballet technique which is emphasized in class to the professional stage. Shows are SPECTACULAR with stunning costumes, magical special effects, wonderful music, and exciting and interesting original choreography. Dancers are introduced to the professional stage with two full-length ballets each year. EVERY DANCER DREAMS OF BEING A PART OF THE MAGIC OF THE NUTCRACKER! This all-time favorite Classic will return to the ‘live’ stage again this year! It will be performed on December 10th, 11th and 12th at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. The dancers, all pupils of IDA, cannot wait to perform in a theater to a live audience once again! Each May, International Ballet Company performs a spring production such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella or Little Red Riding Hood.

Stroke Myths By Dr. Shaye Moskowitz
Myth 1: There was a warning sign, I was having a stroke. A stroke is the sudden loss of blood supply to a part of the brain. Typically, a clot blocks flow and the brain down stream of that vessel stops working. What we see clinically is what the brain is not able to do. Since this is sudden, they rarely are warning signs to the stroke itself. There are circumstances where mini strokes (TIAs) happen and warn that there may be a bigger future stroke that could happen, but those are exceptions. The best approach is to know what the signs of a stroke are so when it happens, it quickly recognized. Myth 2: I cannot have atrial fibrillation because I don’t feel anything so why do I need a blood thinner? Atrial fibrillation, particularly the kind that comes and goes, increases the risk of having a stroke. In fact, the overall risk is estimated at 5% per year and approximately 5 times the rate of the average population. Blood
thinners are important to reduce that risk. Unfortunately, many people have fibrillation without any sensation that there is a problem, and many people feel their heart racing even when they are not in atrial fibrillation. How someone feels is a poor predictor of whether they have atrial fibrillation and whether they need a blood thinner to reduce their stroke risk. Myth 3: There’s nothing to do about a stroke. Historically, there were few treatment options for stroke and hopeful recovery, rehabilitation and prevention were all the health care field could offer. This could not be further from the truth. Treatment options include medications to dissolve the clot, procedures to physically remove larger blockage or surgeries to address pressure from a brain bleed, and are options for select patients. Of course, recovery, rehabilitation and prevention are still important! Myth 4: An aneurysm is an instant death sentence.
An aneurysm is a weak spot on the wall a blood vessel that is feeding the brain. While the rupture of that aneurysm overall carries high mortality, it is an infrequent event and the risk only accumulates over years. In fact, aneurysms are fairly common and are seen in approximately 5% of the population. The vast majority, however, do nothing. Since some do unfortunately, we have to make decisions individually considering not just the aneurysm but the other risk factors someone might have to justify a repair. Broward Health Medical Center received certification from The Joint Commission as an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center, reflecting the highest level of expertise for the treatment of serious stroke events. This certification signifies that the hospitals’ stroke program meets rigorous standards for providing care to all stroke patients including endovascular embolization and surgical clipping of brain aneurysms, tPA administration and mechanical endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), a minimally invasive procedure used to remove a blood clot from the brain during an ischemic stroke.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
It’s Time to Review Your Estate Plan!
T
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
hings change. Despite all the time and thought that went into creating your will or trust, life happens. Often these changes affect your estate planning. If you don’t regularly review and adjust your plan it may not achieve your desired results when you need it most.
How often should I review my documents? We recommend reviewing your revocable living trust or will, along with your advance legal (health) directives, at least every three years. This review is especially important if you experienced any major life changes since your documents were executed, including:
▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸
New family members, or a loss of a loved one Child that has turned 18 or 21 A recently married or divorced beneficiary Beneficiary concerns, such as financial issues, substance abuse problems or disabilities Creation, sale, or closing of a business Purchase of a new or second home, or acquiring an investment property Changes to your beneficiary or successor trustee designations Changes in your relationships with your beneficiaries and/or successor trustees
Can a change in the law affect my documents? Yes, very definitely. Let’s look at a common estate planning document, a durable power of attorney. Several years ago financial institutions lobbied the Florida legislature to change the applicable law to protect banks and brokerage firms from liability if a durable power of attorney is misused or forged. The new law suggests certain “magic” language which, if included in the durable power of attorney, provides this protection, which makes financial institutions much more likely to honor the document. If your document was drafted before 2011, it won’t contain this magic language. Another change to the law which took effect on October 1, 2015, affects your health care power of attorney. The Florida legislature has revised the law to clarify confusion surrounding when a health care power of attorney becomes effective. Your health care power of attorney can be effective immediately, but only if you so designate. If not, your treating physician must first determine that you are unable to manage your own care before they will take instruction from your designated agent. The new law also offers new choices in terms of designating a health care surrogate for a minor child. Because of this change in the law, there is new language that should be part of your health care power of attorney. Broward Education Foundation Launches Back to School Supply Drive
For Broward County Public Schools Students By Terry Jaillet
S
chool’s never out for Broward Education Foundation. The charitable organization which is dedicated to serving students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools launched its annual school supply drive with BEFdrive.com to help equip students with the essential supplies they’ll need for the upcoming 2021-22 school year. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 200,000 students in Broward Schools were living in poverty, based on qualification and participation in the National School Lunch Program where students receive meals through school at a discount or for free. And 3 students in 4 arrive to class without the school supplies necessary for learning according to 90%
of teachers surveyed by the national non-profit Kids in Need Foundation. Covid drastically increased the need for basic school supplies for children in Broward County schools. For these students, school supplies are a luxury. “Broward Education Foundation remains incredibly responsive to the shifting needs in education within our community,” said Tim Curtin, board chair of Broward Education Foundation. “Last year, we reimagined our annual Back to School campaign into a fully virtual model to follow health protocols and delivered safely sealed individual basic school supply kits to students
throughout the county. It worked so well that we’re continuing this model with even more supplies for each student!" “Basic school supplies are always in demand, but even more so now,” said Shea Ciriago, executive director of Broward Education Foundation. “It’s vital we do everything in our power to provide students with the tools they need to stay engaged and focused. We are so appre-
ciative of all the individuals and local businesses who step up each and every year to support our resilient students who are so eager to learn.” Financial donations of any amount go a long way. A gift of just $10 safely equips one student for with the necessities for success. To sponsor an individual student, a class or an entire school please visit BEFdrive.com before August 31, 2021.

Molly and the Muffin
riends since middle school, author Brett Baldwin and illustrator Daniel Villalobos have always enjoyed creating short stories. Brett enjoys writing and Daniel brings those ideas to life with drawings and images. Molly and the Muffin is the first one of their stories to be published and is currently on sale at Amazon.com. In the story, Molly the bulldog wants nothing more than to eat a muffin. There is just one problem - it is high up on the counter, and she cannot reach! Under the watchful eye of the cat, Molly tries everything she can think of to reach her muffin. Molly's out-of-the-box thinking puts her in some comical situations and proves she is not a quitter. This funny, easy-to-read story shows kids what it means to be determined, not give up, and the power of "please." With
easy-to-read words and colorful illustrations, this story will have you and your child laughing and rooting Molly on. Both Brett and Daniel decided when writing the book that they wanted to not only entertain their readers, but they also wanted to help kids in need. Ten percent of net profits from book sales will be donated to Voices for Florida Keys Children, a not-for-profit corporation that exists to meet the needs of abused, neglected, and abandoned children. “Daniel and I picked the Voices for Florida Keys Children charity as my grandmother has been involved with the organization for a very long time,” said Brett Baldwin. “I knew firsthand the difference Voices for Florida Keys Children makes in kids’ lives and hoped that our book could bring kids less fortunate some joy and

She is lovable and strong willed, and I hope the character I created connects with our readers.” Brett is a native Floridian and will be a Senior at Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Florida this year. Daniel, born in Venezuela came to the USA when he was 3 years old and
will be a Senior at Western High School in Davie, Florida this year as well. A launch party was held for the book’s official publishing on Sunday July 11, 2021, at La Torreta restaurant in Weston Florida. Friends, family and co-workers (Brett works in the kitchen) gathered to celebrate these young men’s accomplishments and to preview advanced copies of the book.

CAN DO KID
Cypress Bay Teen Along with Three Other Broward County Students Selected for
Prestigious “Student Leaders” Internship By: Jon Duka
R
ising Cypress Bay Senior, Grace Baek, was selected to participate in Bank of America’s Student Leaders Summer Internship Program. She joined fellow Broward County students Oshmita Golam, who attends Deerfield Beach High School, Enrique Montanez who graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas School, and Nelia Louis who attends Plantation High School in the program. Every year, select community-minded high schoolers are accepted into Bank of America’s Student Leaders program. The students get the first-hand experience in serving their communities through a paid eight-week internship with
nonprofits like Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Habitat for Humanity. They also get to see how nonprofits, governments, and businesses collaborate to meet local needs by participating in the National Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. Many of the students use their newfound skills to create more change and improve more lives, with inspiring stories of enthusiasm and commitment. Grace was noted for working hundreds of services hours at Refugee Assistance Alliance, serving as a content creator to promote the organization's mission, and she also served as a tutor for a third-grade Syrian refugee whom she taught English and Math. She also founded an organization called “Fight for Asians” to fight anti-Asian racism and represent Asian culture. Oshmita founded a nonprofit called The
Decode Me Foundation, which aims to encourage and inspire young girls to expand skills to pursue STEM career trajectories through events, workshops and professional development. She was inspired to create the organization because of the disenfranchisement of girls in STEM competitions and teams she observed throughout her STEM extracurriculars. Enrique taught over 50 senior citizens to use computers in low-income nursing facilities. He has coached a boys baseball team and helped several team players raise their grades so they could participate. In addition, he organized and led a COVID-19 food drive for St. Andrews Parish Pantry. Nelia is dedicated to mentoring and tutoring young children at Jack and Jill Children’s Center. She is also part of the Broward Advisors for Continuing Education Cadet program, where she was able to work to implement projects that would promote college and career readiness throughout her school.

The Language of Love By Beverly Perkins
And the Social Studies Teacher of the Year is Griselle Manzor!
T
he Manatee Bay Elementary teacher was nominated by the school’s staff and administration for the esteemed title because of her dedication and love for teaching. Although the second-grade Dual Language educator teaches all the subjects in Spanish, Social Studies is her favorite. “Because about 30% of the students are not of Hispanic culture, Ms. Manzor along with her partner, created a most enriched cultural experience aligned with the Florida Standards for Social Studies,” said Manatee Bay Principal Heather Hedman-DeVaughn. Manzor has been at Manatee Bay for eight years where her dream job was to teach the Dual Language program. “These teachers on my two teams are amazing! We work together to make sure we have the most engaging lessons. They are not only my co-workers they are my
friends and second family. They have been there for me since I started and have helped me become the teacher I am today,” stated Manzor. The ambitious teacher created an environment where her students feel safe, represented, and respected. She always takes into consideration the cultural backgrounds of all her students. This allows her to incorporate different cultures into all her lessons while utilizing a culturally responsive approach to teaching. “I make connections through literature, magazines, videos, and digital content, including stories from amazing immigrants that helped build this great nation, so that when they read a biography of an immigrant like Roberto Clemente, Supreme Justice Sotomayor, or Ellen Ochoa, they can feel inspired and empowered enough to say, ‘I can do this too’,” explained Manzor.
Manzor’s goal is to prepare young people to be productive, humane, rational citizens in our society and continue to inspire them to believe that their contributions make America a better place. “With her outstanding work ethic, creativity, and dedication to providing enriching cultural experiences, it is no surprise that Ms. Manzor’s student achievement is 91% on above grade-level in reading. Griselle Manzor is the complete package, and we were so excited to celebrate her success as Broward County’s ‘Social Studies Teacher of the Year’,” added Hedman-DeVaughn.

Chuck Davidson Lights Up the Guardian ad Litem Program of Broward County

argie Purtic says that when Guardian ad Litem volunteer Chuck Davidson came to visit the little boy she was fostering, her four biological children would come downstairs, too. “He doesn’t just tend to our little foster guy,” Margie says. “He’s like everyone’s grandpa…I’m sure he’s like this with everyone.” Absolutely he is. Chuck carries a ball in his bag and is always ready to play. He invented the “secret Guardian ad Litem handshake” for a little boy who’d been shaken as a baby and lived in a therapeutic foster home. In his 25 years as a GAL, he’s represented well over 100 abused, abandoned and neglected children in dependency court, specializing in older youths. “I asked for older kids because those are the kids I could do the

Additionally, the Marching Band has a student leadership team that plays a big role in relaying everything that comes from the Band Director, the team of instructors, and the parent boosters to their peers. The top two leaders are the Band Captain and the Drum Major, and an

The opportunity to be a part of student leadership at the Bay has given me and many of my peers an outlet to help others improve as both performers and individuals, and at the end of the day no matter how hard or frustrating a day might get, there is nothing I would rather do than be on that field and giving back to such an amazing program that has personally done so much for me,” expressed Band Captain and rising senior, Jose Matamoros. CBHS Band students are always proud to be part of the Weston community and take every opportunity to participate in many local events. They also partner with Weston elementary and middle schools to create strong pathways and make sure that all young students have a chance and get exposed to the many benefits of music education. “I endeavor to instill a disciplined approach that is musically and artistically comprehensive. ust the other day I came home from work after spending long hours at the office and many more stuck in traffic. I walked in the house and as I looked intensely at my sofa I had an internal debate about whether I should lie on it and vegetate or start preparing dinner; the debate was brief, the sofa won! I laid there, on my phone of course, surfing through social media, reading through my emails and texting my co-worker about the days shenanigans; as if we didn’t do enough talking at the office. My son came out of his room where he had been doing homework, sat next to me and started talking about school and something else. I couldn’t tell you what that something else was about because although I asked him, “sweet heart, how was your day?” I continued to surf through my phone and vegetate. My son continued to talk to me about his day, and suddenly raised his voice and said “mom, are you listening?” I responded, “yes, of course.” He asked me to repeat what he said, I couldn’t. He then said to me that I was hearing him but not actually listening. He was right! A had a sudden revelation, I was not being present! I was doing the exact thing I was complaining about other parents doing. Children desperately trying to get their attention, while parents walk aimlessly staring at their phone and unconsciously dismissing their children’s need for attention. It is important that we remember to be present for our children. To prioritize our time with them. There is nothing wrong with spending your “me time” on your phone or doing whatever it is that helps you relax after a long day at work. However, it is important to be present and fully engaged when our children are around since our time with them is short but of significant impact. Children will naturally model their parent’s behavior. Some experts in their respected field suggest that the amount of quality time we spend with our children will greatly influence their future success in life. What example are we setting for our children? Why kind of role models do we hope to be for them and what are we doing to achieve it?

Ankle Replacement By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS
A
nkle arthritis involves the loss of cartilage which decreases joint function and ultimately results in pain, stiffness, swelling, and warmth. As the cartilage wears the bones in the ankle joint grind on each other. There are several types of arthritis in the ankle. The most common types are osteoarthritis, a condition which is often a result of previous trauma to the ankle or leg and rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an immune disease resulting in inflammation of the joint lining and in advanced stages will lead to cartilage, bone, ligament, tendon, and muscle damage. Conservative treat-
ment for these conditions may involve medication, injections, activity modification, physical therapy, and bracing. When conservative treatment fails surgery may be considered. This involves fusing (locking the ankle permanently) or replacing it with an artificial joint as are done in the knee or hip joints. The procedure is referred to as total ankle arthroplasty or total ankle replacement. There are several ankle replacement systems available to the surgeon. Some total ankle replacement systems require more bone removal in order to obtain the desired result, others are referred to as resurfacing systems which remove less bone and essentially replace the surfaces of the joint. surgery. Today’s total ankle replacements are essentially anatomic and provide the patient with the ability to reproduce the natural movement of the ankle joint. One of the most advanced systems utilizes the Prophecy technique developed by Wright Medical. The Prophecy technique allows precise implantation of the device by using specialized CT
scan imaging before surgery. Bioengineers will subsequently map out a customized plan for the individual patient which enhances the success of the operation. The alignment of the ankle is crucial as a neutral (straight) ankle will perform the best in the long term, otherwise, ancillary procedures are required to straighten the ankle and foot.

ry eye is a condition in which a person doesn't have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. With each blink of the eyelids, tears spread across the front surface of the eye, known as the cornea. Tears provide lubrication, reduce the risk of eye infection, wash away foreign matter in the eye and keep the surface of the eyes smooth and clear. Excess tears in the eyes flow into small drainage ducts in the inner corners of the eyelids, which drain into the back of the nose. Dry eyes can occur when tear production and drainage is not in balance.
Causes & risk factors Dry eyes can occur when tear production and drainage are not in balance. People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears or their tears are of poor quality:
▸
Inadequate amount of tears. Tears are produced by several glands in and around the eyelids. Tear production tends to diminish with age, with various medical conditions, or as a side effect of certain medicines. Environmental conditions, such as wind and dry climates, can also decrease tear volume due to increased tear evaporation. When the normal amount of tear production decreases or tears evaporate too quickly from the eyes, symptoms of dry eye can develop.
▸
Poor quality of tears. Tears are made up of three layers: oil, water, and mucus. Each component protects and nourishes the front surface of the eye. A smooth oil layer helps prevent evaporation of the water layer, while the mucin layer spreads the tears evenly over the surface of the eye. If the tears evaporate too quickly or do not spread evenly over the cornea due to deficiencies with any of the three tear layers, dry eye symptoms can develop.
Dry eyes can develop for many reasons, including:
▸ ▸ ▸
Age. Dry eyes are a part of the natural aging process. The majority of people over age 65 experience some symptoms of dry eyes. Gender. Women are more likely to develop dry eyes due to hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives, and menopause.
Medications. Certain medicines, including antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants, can reduce tear production.
▸
Medical conditions. People with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and thyroid problems are more likely to have symptoms of dry eyes. Also, problems with inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis), inflammation of the surfaces of the eye, or the inward or outward turning of eyelids can cause dry eyes to develop.
▸
DRY EYE By Jane Therrien OD, FIAOMC, Optometric Physician
Environmental conditions. Exposure to smoke, wind and dry climates can increase tear evaporation resulting in dry eye symptoms. Failure to blink regularly, such as when staring at a computer screen for long periods of time, can also contribute to drying of the eyes.
▸
Other factors. Long-term use of contact lenses can be a factor in the development of dry eyes. Refractive eye surgeries, such as LASIK, can decrease tear production and contribute to dry eyes. Advanced dry eyes may damage the front surface of the eye and impair vision.
Symptoms People with dry eyes may experience irritated, gritty, scratchy or burning eyes; a feeling of something in their eyes; excess watering; and blurred vision. Symptoms include:
▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸
Redness. stinging, scratching, or burning sensations. Light Sensitivity. Watery eyes. Stringy mucus near the eye. Blurry Vision.
Diagnosis
Dry eyes can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. Testing with emphasis on the evaluation of the quantity and quality of tears produced by the eyes may include:
▸
Patient history to determine the patient's symptoms and to note any general health problems, medications or environmental factors that may be contributing to the dry eye problem.
▸ ▸ ▸
External examination of the eye, including lid structure and blink dynamics. Evaluation of the eyelids and cornea using bright light and magnification.
Measurement of the quantity and quality of tears for any abnormalities. Special dyes may be put in the eyes to better observe tear flow and to highlight any changes to the outer surface of the eye caused by insufficient tears. With the information obtained from testing, a doctor of optometry can determine if you have dry eyes and advise you on treatment options.
Treatment Treatments for dry eyes aim to restore or maintain the normal amount of tears in the eye to minimize dryness and related discomfort and to maintain eye health. Dry eyes can be a chronic condition, but a doctor of optometry can prescribe treatment to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable and to prevent your vision from being affected. The primary approaches used to manage and treat dry eyes include adding tears using over-the-counter artificial tear solutions, conserving tears, increasing tear production, and treating the inflammation of the eyelids or eye surface that contributes to the dry eyes.
62 / Our City Weston / August 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
▸
Adding tears. Mild cases of dry eyes can often be managed using over-the-counter artificial tear solutions. These can be used as often as needed to supplement natural tear production. Preservative-free artificial tear solutions are recommended because they contain fewer additives, which can further irritate the eyes. People with dry eyes that don't respond to artificial tears alone will need to take additional steps to treat their dry eyes.
▸
Conserving tears. Keeping natural tears in the eyes longer can reduce the symptoms of dry eyes. This can be done by blocking the tear ducts through which the tears normally drain. The tear ducts can be blocked with tiny silicone or gel-like plugs that can be removed if needed. Or a surgical procedure can permanently close the tear ducts. In either case, the goal is to keep the available tears in the eye longer to reduce problems related to dry eyes.
▸
Increasing tear production. A doctor of optometry can prescribe eye drops that increase tear production. Taking an omega-3 fatty acid nutritional supplement may also help.
▸
Treating the contributing eyelid or ocular surface inflammation. A doctor of optometry might recommend prescription eye drops or ointments, warm compresses and lid massage, or eyelid cleaners to help decrease inflammation around the surface of the eyes.
Prevention
▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸
You can take the following steps to reduce symptoms of dry eyes: Remember to blink regularly when reading or staring at a computer screen for long periods of time.
Increase the humidity in the air at work and at home. Wear sunglasses outdoors, particularly those with wraparound frames, to reduce exposure to drying winds and the sun.
Nutritional supplements containing essential fatty acids may help decrease dry eye symptoms in some people. Ask your doctor if taking dietary supplements could help your dry eye problems.
▸ ▸ ▸
Avoiding becoming dehydrated by drinking plenty of water (8 to 10 glasses) each day.
Avoid air getting blown in your eyes by directing car heaters away from your face. Avoid environments that are drier than normal, such as deserts, airplanes, and places at high altitudes. How Good
is Your Alignment By By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
T
he single most important – and frequently overlooked – full swing fundamental in golf is the setup position. So, here are some step-by-step tips for how to take your stance and achieve that perfect setup.
Alignment in the Golf Stance At address your body (feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders and eyes) should be positioned parallel to the target line. When viewed from behind, a right-handed golfer will appear aimed slightly left of the target. This optical illusion is created because the ball is on the target line and the body is not.
Foot Position Your feet should start out shoulder-width apart but adjust depending on whether you’re playing woods/long irons, middle irons or short irons. The feet should be shoulder-width (outside of the shoulders to the inside of the heels) for the middle irons. The short iron stance will be two inches narrower and the stance for long irons and woods should be two inches wider. The target-side foot should be flared toward the target from 20 to 40 degrees to allow the body to rotate toward the target on the downswing. The back foot should be square (90 degrees to the target line) to slightly open to create the proper hip turn on the back swing. Your flexibility and body rotation speed determine the proper foot placement.
▸
Ball Position in the Golf Stance The position of the golf ball in one’s stance varies depending on the club used. The ball placement in your setup position varies with the club you select. Your middle irons should be played in the middle of your stance. The correct ball position for the long irons and fairway woods plus your driver is to be played off the inside left heel.
Keep Your Weight on the Balls of Your Feet Your weight should be balanced on the balls of the feet, not on the heels or toes. With short irons, your weight should be 60% on the target-side foot. For middle iron shots the weight should be 50/50 or equal on each foot. For your longest clubs, place 60% of your weight on the backside foot. This will help you swing the club on the correct angle on the back swing.
The Final Setup Positions Always practice proper alignment out on the driving range by placing two clubs down on the ground parallel to each other after you feel you are properly aligned to your intended target and see how well you are lined up. Better yet, while on the golf course ask your playing partner to stand behind you and see if you are properly aligned. The best way is to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional just on alignment. They are the experts in the game.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

Ear Infections By Miguel E. Cordova, DV
What Is an Ear Infection? The medical term for an ear infection is otitis. Ear infections generally begin as inflammation of the skin inside the outer ear canal (the tube-shaped part of the ear visible under the ear flap). Once inflammation is present, discharge, redness, and other characteristics of an ear infection become established. Inflammation of the canal leads to the overgrowth of normal bacteria and yeast that live in the ear; other “opportunistic” bacteria can also take advantage of the inflammation and unhealthy environment inside the ear to establish infection. The overgrowth of these organisms causes more inflammation and other unhealthy changes inside the ear. In some cases, ear infections that start in the outer ear canal can progress to involve the middle ear and inner ear. Deep infections can lead to deafness and other complications.
What Causes Ear Infections? Any pet can develop otitis regardless of ear shape, exposure to water (swimming), or the amount of hair inside the ear canal. Ear infections in dogs and cats are most often the result of an underlying problem. Many conditions can predispose a pet to developing an ear infection, including the following:
(food allergy or inhalant allergy) ▸ Allergies Ear mites ▸ Polyps or other growths in the ear canal ▸ Systemic illnesses such as thyroid dis▸ ease and adrenal gland disease (in dogs) material in the ears, including ▸ Foreign dirt, sand, or plant material Ear infections are painful. Some pets with this condition may even try to bite people who try to touch their ears or head (including their owners). The clinical signs of otitis can vary depending on the severity of the inflammation, but can include the following:
the head or rubbing the head ▸ Shaking and ears on the floor or on furniture ▸ Scratching the ears
from the ears (can ▸ Discharge sometimes have a very bad odor)
of the ear canal and ▸ Redness ear flap; the ears may also feel
warm when touched Some pets with severe otitis may cry or groan as they rub and scratch their ears. Some pets scratch so severely that their nails create wounds on the skin around their face, neck, and ears. If the otitis is severe or chronic, the outer ear canal can begin to thicken and become deformed. This thickening can make the ear opening very narrow, so cleaning the ears becomes more difficult. Ulcerations on the inside of the ear canal can also result from infection and trauma.
Why Are Antibiotics Necessary to Treat Ear Infections? Once the inflammation associated with an ear infection is established, bacteria (and yeast) can create secondary infections. These infections can be relatively straightforward to diagnose and treat with antibiotics or antifungal medications. Still, the underlying reason for the inflammation must be addressed, or the secondary infections are likely to recur. Diagnosing the underlying cause can be challenging and may require additional testing. During a physical examination, your veterinarian may use a cotton swab to collect some debris from your pet’s ear. This material can be placed on a slide and examined under a microscope to determine if the infection is due to yeast, bacteria, or mites. Your veterinarian may also recommend bacterial culture and sensitivity testing of the debris found inside your pet’s ear. This information can help determine the best medications to treat the infection. Your veterinarian will also likely clean your pet’s ears to remove as much debris as possible before treatment begins. Cleaning begins creating a healthier environment inside the ear—an environment that will not continue to support bacterial overgrowth.
How Can Future Ear Infections Be Prevented? Once an infection has resolved, regular cleaning helps prevent recurrence by promoting a healthy environment inside the outer ear canal. Never insert a cotton swab into your pet’s ear canal; these swabs can rupture the eardrum, which could lead to additional complications. If you are uncomfortable cleaning your pet’s ears, ask your veterinary team to review ear cleaning procedures with you. Underlying conditions, such as allergies, should also be addressed to help prevent recurrence of ear infections. Returning for regular check-ups with your veterinarian is also an important way to track your pet’s progress and catch ear infections early before they have a chance to get firmly reestablished.

Part of the comfort in creating a firm estate plan is knowing that your children are taken care of if you pass away. This goes beyond them being set financially. Who will be their guardian? If your ex-spouse is a fit parent, then he or she will likely become your kids’ guardian if you pass away. Sometimes marriages end because one parent becomes unfit. This could be because of substance abuse, child abuse, and psychiatric illness (among other things). But if your former spouse is unfit, set money aside. A guardian of your choosing can access this money. This money can be used to pay for legal fees if custody has to be determined through the court system. You will likely leave money behind for your children. Even if your ex-spouse is fit, maybe you don’t feel comfortable with him or her controlling the finances. Choose a trustee. Set up a trust. And this person—the trustee—can handle the money on behalf of your child if he or she is still a minor. These changes with your estate can all come about due to a divorce. ElDeiry & ElDeiry can assist you through them.

THE REALITY OF EQUAL TIME SHARING
A
AWARDED 11 YEARS
By Evan H. Baron, Esq.
s the law stands today, equal time sharing is not presumed to be in the best interests of the children in all situations. I will however state that it is becoming the norm, rather than the exception. It is believed that frequent contact with both parents will result in a better adjusted child. Of course, every case is different and as such, it is difficult to have a set rule for all cases. Parent’s work schedules, travel schedules and locations should be considered. A parent who must leave for work prior to a minor child having to wake up for school could present a problem. A parent who does not have a set schedule such as pilots or firefighters also require some planning. Parents who choose to live a distance apart can also complicate the situation. Of course, the other factor which is always considered is child support and how equal time sharing affects the monthly amount to be paid. Child Support in Florida is based upon several factors, one of which is the number of overnights a minor child spends with each parent. An equal time-sharing schedule will result in a reduced amount of support, since it is presumed that each parent will have significant “out of pocket” expenses if each has an equal amount of time with the child. This concept of equal time sharing has existed for several years now. I have recently met with prospective clients who seem to share the same issue. A parent has equal time sharing pursuant to their Parenting Plan, but in reality, the parent is not actually exercising his/her 50%. The result is that the parent who is not following the schedule is receiving a financial benefit by a reduced child support payment, but is not sharing in the responsibility of caring for the child. Is there a way to correct this situation, even though the parties had previously reached an Agreement? The answer is yes and a correction to this situation can be accomplished by a Petition for Modification. The moving party (the parent who is in fact receiving less support than he/she should) must allege that since the parties entered into their Parenting Plan there has been a substantial change of circumstance, that was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was agreed to. To be successful it is essential that a calendar be kept, listing the actual overnights being exercised by each parent. Just alleging that mom or dad doesn’t have the children 50% of the time, without some additional proof, will probably not be a strong or successful argument if it were to go before a judge. If the Petition is successful, a new time-sharing schedule would be determined and child support would be recalculated based upon the actual number of overnights each party is exercising.

T
The Value of Fat in Cosmetic Surgery
By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long-lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants is not applicable, because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting-edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells, as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures,
both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. SAFETY CORNER
Why You Should Not Use Floaties By Marcella Miciano
S
ummer in South Florida is hot. One of the best ways to beat the heat is by taking a dip in the pool. Unfortunately, one very common pool product may be putting children at risk. Floaties, also known as water wings, are one of the most dangerous items your children can use while playing in the water. Here are some common misconceptions about floaties: My child plays and swims more confidently when they use floaties. Your child may have more confidence in the water because their floaties provide them with a false sense of security. Using floaties gives the child the feeling that they will always be able to float on their own or jump into the pool and rise to the surface without assistance. It is important to remember that a child can not differentiate between when they are using floaties and when they are not. Children should attend swim lessons to learn how to feel the water, buoyancy and their body working to keep them afloat. I always make sure my child’s floaties are securely on their arms. They’d never be able to take them off. Children can easily – and silently – take their floaties off and jump into the pool. It is nearly impossible for even the most responsible parent to hear their child remove floaties. While nothing can replace an attentive adult, or designated Water Watcher, keeping an eye on children playing in the pool, teaching children to swim without floaties will certainly make the water safer. I feel better knowing my child will always be at the surface of the water when they use their floaties. You feel this way because your child’s floaties are giving you a false sense of security. Here’s the problem – parents often become overly confident that their child is safe in the water when the reality is a child can remove their floaties in only a second if an adult looks away. I thought floaties were the safest option for a child who cannot swim or float on their own. Did you know that floaties are not Coast Guard approved? This means they are not meant to be used as a lifesaving flotation device. Floaties are a toy and should be treated the same as plastic watering cans, diving rings, and water guns. None of these toys can save a child’s life. Floaties are made with a weak plastic that can easily rip or tear on rough pool surfaces. They can easily become damaged while playing. Using a proper fitting life vest is the best option if your child needs a personal flotation device. Swimming lessons are the best way to keep your child safe at the pool. These lifesaving lessons provide far more security than floaties.
