Navigating the Back-to-School Season in the Modern Age
As we bid farewell to the sun-kissed days of summer, it’s hard to believe that another school year is just around the corner. With the arrival of August 21st, the first day of school for most children in the area, it’s time to gather the necessary school supplies, select the perfect lunch box, and wrap up those summer reading assignments. However, preparing for school has become increasingly intricate over the past two decades, as technology and educational options have evolved.
Gone are the days of covering textbooks in brown paper bags. The rapid advancement of technology has transformed the way students engage with learning materials. From downloading software onto smartphones, iPads, and Chromebooks, to accessing a vast array of digital resources, students now have a world of knowledge at their fingertips.
After-school programs have blossomed into a diverse range of opportunities, surpassing the traditional offerings of sports and music. Today, students can choose from an array of enriching activities, including computer classes, dual language programs, and much more. Likewise, parents now have an abundance of educational options for their children. In addition to traditional public and private schools, charter schools, home school, and virtual schools have emerged, providing families with a broader selection tailored to their needs.
If your family finds itself in the midst of the back-to-school preparations without a concrete plan, fear not! Our City is here to lend a helping hand. Inside this issue, you’ll discover our comprehensive Back-to-School Guide, designed to assist you in navigating the educational landscape. Packed with valuable information on the area’s top preschools, private schools, and educational programs, as well as an extensive directory of after-school activities ranging from arts to YMCA programs, this curated guide aims to provide practical support as you gear up for the upcoming school year.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of back-to-school preparations, it’s important to savor the remaining weeks of summer. Cherish the sun-drenched days, create lasting memories, and relish the freedom that this season offers. Before you know it, school will be back in session, and a new chapter of growth and learning will begin.
So, take a deep breath, enjoy the fleeting moments of summer, and rest assured that you have the resources and support to embrace the forthcoming school year with confidence.

Off to London
REPRESENTING THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Dancing together since age five, these butterflies thrilled the audience at twelve! Today, Paula Zapata, Indie Hurley, and Elizabeth Haeflinger are working hard to prepare for “The Fonteyn International Dance Competition” in London in October 2023. The Fonteyn, formerly the Genée, is the pinnacle of achievement for the Royal Academy of Dance candidates and is considered the Olympics of Ballet worldwide.
While in London, these firm friends will spend a week training under-celebrated teachers and choreographers, dancing alongside qualified students worldwide!
They will perform at His Majesty’s Theater in London’s West End!
International Dance Academy (IDA) is the ONLY school in South Florida that offers preparation and certification in the Royal Academy of Dance, whose patron for many decades was the late Queen Elizabeth II. Examinations start from age 6 with Primary and go through each year to Advanced II in their graduating year. IDA is proud of its
100% pass rate, with most dancers receiving the highest mark of distinction. These certificates are impressive additions to college and university applications. Only dancers with distinction for their Advanced II examination qualify to dance in “The Fonteyn." Usually, between 30-35 dancers qualify worldwide. This year, IDA has three who qualified and have been accepted! An incredible achievement indeed!
The management and readers of Our City Media wish you Bon Voyage as you dance your way to London, representing THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston.

CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL “ SOUND OF THUNDER” Striking a Harmonious Note of Success
The Cypress Bay Band Program has been a beacon of success over the years, leaving a resounding impact on Weston students for years. With invitations to prestigious state and national events, the program's performing ensembles have consistently dazzled audiences with their remarkable talent and dedication. A key player in this triumph is Band Director, Brett Dawson, who took on the role of full-time Director of Bands in the summer of 2020. Armed with a background as a professional jazz trombonist and two decades of experience as the former Director of Bands at Coral Springs High School, Dawson has adeptly navigated the challenges of virtual teaching while elevating the students' performance.
One of the program's highlights is the Marching Band, which has achieved commendable scores at both FBA (Florida
Bandmasters Association) district assessments and FMBC (Florida Marching Band Coalition) regional competitions. Such accomplishments are a testament to the collective effort and dedication of the students and staff.
Despite the constraints imposed by the pandemic, the Sound of Thunder program continued to thrive. An impressive Pep Band comprising 70+ students performed at the Senior Night Football Game, igniting the spirit of the school community.
The Color Guard is a vital aspect of the program's artistic expression, bringing a captivating visual element to the performances. The Color Guard has flourished in their role. Behind the scenes, show designers Andres Martinez and Michael Pflug masterfully craft the music and choreography, adding layers of depth and emotion to each performance.
Over 25 students participated in the first-ever virtual Solo & Ensemble District MPA (Music Performance Assessment), with an impressive 13 qualifying for the State level. These achievements showcase the dedication and hard work of both students and teachers, demonstrating the hard work and spirit that defines the Cypress Bay High School "Sound of Thunder" Band and Color Guard.
The success of the program extends beyond the awards and accolades, with a vibrant sense of community and passion for music at its core. The Sound of Thunder continues to inspire, uplift, and entertain, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who experience their performances.

The night before, on July 3rd, Weston residents secured their spots on the lush green lawns, of Weston Regional Park.
The festival atmosphere was
enjoyed by kids of all ages, culminating in a fantastic fireworks show, commemorating those “rockets red glare.”
In this joyous atmosphere, Weston embraced the essence of patriotism and unity, commemorating the freedom and values that make our city and country truly great.
Weston residents didn’t let the scorching heat ruin the celebration at this year’s July 4th festivities. Residents refused to let it dampen their spirits as many took to the streets for the Weston July 4th Hometown Celebration 5K Run/Walk. Feet hit the pavement as thousands ran down the streets of Weston Town Center. Thankfully, the BSO Fire Department was on hand to keep everyone cool. AUGUST MEANS BACK TO SCHOOL!
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
August means back to school! Today, instead of math or history, it's all about planning for the future - estate planning to be exact!
Question #1: True or false? Do you have to appoint the same person for handling both your financial and your health choices if you are unable to? Absolutely not! You can pick different people who excel in different areas. Think of your friend who's a CPA or financial wizard and your daughter who knows their way around a stethoscope.
Many folks think that the person who looks after your children must be the same person who handles their inheritance. But that's a myth! You can pick a loving, caring guardian for your children and choose someone else entirely to manage the money side of things.
Let's say your own kids aren't quite cut out for the task of running your estate, maybe they're not the organizing type or they're too much of a perfectionist. In that case, it might be best to bring in a professional to take on the role. Not only could this save your assets, but it could also keep the family peace. Now that's what we call a win-win!
Question #2: True or false? If you never got around to making an estate plan or haven’t updated it in a while, Florida Law will do what your family “knows” you wanted.
False! Florida Law does step in to pick up the slack with some 'default settings', but that is a one-size-fits-most approach, and who wants that when you can have your own customized plan! Florida Law may provide that your spouse will make decisions, but you may not want your spouse to make your decisions, then remarry, disinheriting your children.
Big life changes - think weddings, divorces, retiring, switching jobs, or welcoming a new baby (or saying a sad goodbye to someone) - can all signal it's time to revisit your estate plan.
And let's not forget, tax laws and estate planning rules are constantly changing. So, it's a smart move to give your plan a regular health check. Even if you don't need to make any tweaks, catching up with your estate planning attorney for a review can offer peace of mind. After all, you want to be sure everything's in order when it really counts.
Question #3: True or false? A simple will is a cheaper, cloned version of a trust? False!
A will only kicks into action after you're gone, but a trust gets to work even if you can't, like during periods of illness. Plus, trusts skip the legal red tape of probate court. So, while a will might seem cheaper at first glance, a trust could save you time, money, and stress in the long run.
So, whether you aced the quiz or not, the key takeaway is this: keep your estate plan up-to-date and choose your decision-makers wisely. After all, it's your future we're talking about, and that's one test we all want to pass!

championships. Afterward, he played one season at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and became the program's first-ever first-round draft pick.
Howard, who was also part of the talented University School team, transferred to IMG Academy for his final two years of high school. Following his high school career, he played college basketball at the University of Michigan under the guidance of his father, Juwan Howard, a former 19-year NBA player who currently serves as the head coach for the Wolverines.
Notably, with the Orlando Magic, Howard will join forces with Jonathan Isaac, who attended the International School of Broward in Hollywood for two seasons.
On June 22nd, the National Basketball Association (NBA) conducted its annual amateur draft, during which 58 of the finest basketball players from around the world were selected by the NBA's 30 teams. Notably, Broward County produced five players who were chosen in this draft.
The first pair of players from Broward County were the Thompson twins, who showcased their skills at Pine Crest School. Amen Thompson was picked as the fourth overall selection by the Houston Rockets, followed by his brother, Ausar Thompson, who was chosen by the Detroit Pistons in the subsequent pick.
Taylor Hendricks, who played for both University School and Calvary Christian, was selected as the ninth pick by the Utah Jazz. Jett Howard, hailing from University School, became the 11th pick, joining the Orlando Magic. Lastly, Toumani Camara from ChaminadeMadonna concluded Broward County's representation by being selected as the 52nd pick by the Phoenix Suns in the second round.
The Thompson twins initially made the varsity team at Pine Crest in eighth grade and quickly rose to become two of the top players in the country. They
led Pine Crest to a state championship during their junior year, both averaging over 20 points per game. After their junior seasons, Amen and Ausar decided to depart Pine Crest and join the professional Overtime Elite league in Atlanta.
Hendricks played alongside Barnes, Howard, and Vernon Carey Jr. at University School, forming a formidable team. He later transferred to Calvary Christian for his final two years of high school, where he won consecutive state
Although Camara was born in Belgium, he moved to South Florida and played high school basketball at Chaminade-Madonna. He went on to play two years of college basketball at the University of Georgia before transferring to Dayton for an additional two seasons, where he earned recognition as an all-conference player. Camara's selection in the NBA draft marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first-ever player from ChaminadeMadonna to be drafted into the NBA.

Safeguarding Weston Together BSO Collaborative programs engage community
The City of Weston entrusts the Broward Sheriff's Office with the responsibility of safeguarding our community by delivering police and fire rescue services. To enhance these essential services, both adults and teenagers residing in Weston have the opportunity to participate in various volunteer programs. These dedicated volunteers can complement and support the efforts of law enforcement and fire rescue, fostering a stronger sense of community and collec tive safety.
Community Emergency Response Team
When faced with an emergency, Weston's Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) stands ready to respond. So far, BSO Fire Rescue has trained close to 100 residents in fundamental disaster response skills, including fire safety, light search and rescue, team coordination, and disaster medical operations.
BSO Explorers
The Broward Sheriff's Law Enforcement Explorer Program offers teenagers and young adults, aged 14 to 21, a chance to engage with law enforcement officers in a structured and disciplined environment. Back to school! It’s that time of year when we gear up our children to take on the rigors of academia and waking up before noon. But before we load up those backpacks, I wanted to share some information to help make this school year a healthy success. Elementary, middle, and high school students must often carry backpacks that weigh enough to cause chronic back pain, poor posture, and even decreased lung volume. Recent research supports that children carrying backpack loads of more than ten percent of their bodyweight have a greater risk of developing back pain and related issues.
There are several preventative measures that may help reduce and avoid back pain in schoolaged children. The best way to prevent back pain is to avoid carrying heavy loads. If this cannot be avoided, then taking advantage of locker breaks and only carrying items necessary for a couple of classes is very helpful. The American Occupational Therapy Association and the American Chiropractic Association offer these additional safe backpack etiquette tips:
• Avoid carrying over 10 percent of their bodyweight in their backpack.
• Place the heaviest objects at the back of the pack.
• Make sure the items fit as snugly as possible to minimize back pain due to shifting weight.
• Adjust the shoulder straps so they fit snugly over your child’s shoulders and the backpack doesn’t drag your child backward.
• Children should avoid carrying backpacks slung over one shoulder.
• Encourage your child to carry only necessary items in their backpack.
• Look for backpacks with helpful features such as multiple compartments for even weight distribution, padded straps to protect the shoulders and neck, and waist belt.
Chiropractic Care Can Help! If your child is experiencing back pain, contact Dr. Wong, your local chiropractor. Chiropractic care benefits many adults and children with spinal discomfort. Tailored treatment plans can be created specifically for your spinal health goals.

Smoke is a major eye irritant, particularly for those who wear contact lenses. If you smoke and wear contact lenses, the tar and nicotine that deposits on your fingers can contaminate your contacts when you handle your lenses, which can give your eyes a burning sensation.
In addition to experiencing problems associated with poor contact lens hygiene, plus the diseases already associated with tobacco use (lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and overall reduced life expectancy), individuals who use tobacco are more likely to develop eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
People considering other alternatives, such as smokeless tobacco, or electronic cigarettes, may erroneously believe they are
less risky. But there is no safe way to use tobacco. Smokeless tobacco also carries a greater risk of developing gum disease, mouth cancer, and staining your teeth. While there may be some debate on the safety of e-cigs and vaping, they contain nicotine, which is highly addictive.
E-cigs can cause harm to the developing brains of children under 18 and could cause harm to a fetus. In addition, some e-cigs contain diacetyl which is a flavor similar to butter and is used on microwave popcorn. This chemical can cause ‘popcorn lung disease,’ which can cause shortness of breath, coughing and is irreversible. There is also little evidence that e-cigs are helpful in quitting tobacco use.
If you smoke and wear contact lenses, be sure to follow these recommendations:
• Always wash and dry your hands before handling contact lenses.
• Carefully and regularly clean contact lenses. Rub the contact lenses with your fingers and rinse thoroughly before soaking lenses overnight in a sufficient amount of
multi-purpose solution to completely cover the lens.
• Store lenses in the proper lens storage case and replace your case every three months or sooner. Clean the case after each use, and keep it open and dry between cleanings.
• Only fresh solution should be used to clean and store contact lenses. Never re-use old solution. Saline solution and rewetting drops are not designed to disinfect lenses.
• Always follow the recommended contact lens replacement schedule prescribed by your eye doctor.
• Don’t wear contact lenses while swimming or in a hot tub. Lenses should not be exposed to any kind of water, including tap water and in swimming pools, oceans, lakes, hot tubs and showers.
To ensure your eyes are healthy, make an appointment with Dr. Jane Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare for a comprehensive eye exam.

“I’M COMING HOME”
BCPS SELECTS PETER LICATA AS NEW SUPERINTENDENT
Broward County Public School Board (BCPS) announced the selection of Dr. Peter Licata as its next superintendent. The country’s sixth-largest school district announced the selection after a nationwide search. Licata is set to be in place prior to the start of the 2023/24 school year. He was selected via a 7-2 board vote. East Baton Rouge Louisiana School District Superintendent Dr. Sito Narcisse received the other two votes.
BCPS Board Chair Lori Alhadeff announced the selection, saying, “I am so excited to introduce the next superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, Dr. Peter Licata. I believe he is the transformational leader that we were seeking.”
By joining BCPS, Licata is coming full circle, returning to the school district where he was once a first-grade student at McNab Elementary School in Pompano Beach.
“I’m coming home. We will change Broward County to an A (school district),” Dr. Licata said, “We are down the street from where I was born and where my wife was born.
I feel like a fortunate son to be able to do this.”
Licata began his almost 30-year career in education as a teacher and basketball coach for the School District of Palm Beach County and has continued to advance his leadership career – most recently holding the position of South Region Superintendent. In this role, he oversees 60 schools, 65,000 students, more than 5,000 teachers and four instructional superintendents.
Licata comes from a family of teachers and was inspired to pursue his career by his father.
“It was at my father’s funeral, when thousands of people came to me to say what an impact, as coach and algebra teacher, my father had on their lives. That day I became a teacher.” Licata said during his public remarks at the school board’s public interview.
Licata’s experience includes 15 years of teaching and leading at the middle and high school levels, and 14 years at the district-leadership level as Director
of Secondary Curriculum and Assistant Superintendent, before becoming a regional superintendent.
“Our goal has remained to find the most qualified candidate to lead our schools while maintaining our dedication to excellence in education and to preparing our students to reach their highest potential,” Alhadeff commented. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Licata to Broward County Public Schools.”
During the interview process, the new superintendent laid out his vision to get the school system to become an ‘A’ district.
“It’s my vision and mission that every child that starts school at BCPS has an experience as memorable as mine with the same opportunities. I know being born and raised in Broward County doesn’t automatically qualify me as the best candidate, but I believe it gives me a unique perspective and knowledge of the county… Broward County is where I was born, raised, married, and I now want to make it the best educational system in all of Florida as superintendent.”

THE BACK TO SCHOOL MANIFESTO
By Leslie Courtney
Wait, summer is over? I have to start thinking about lunches, backpacks, and getting that one kid out of bed who refuses to put their feet on the floor? Indeed, whatever the grade, whatever the school, the business and carpool lanes await, so it's time to take the pledge.
I WILL PLAN AHEAD: TURN NIGHT INTO MORNING: Yes, you're tired after dinner. I get it. But your mornings will only run as smoothly as your prep the night before. Whether it’s packing lunch, picking out outfits, even prepping a light breakfast or signing the field trip note, the more you do the night before, the easier school mornings become.
I WILL SET MORNING INTENTIONS: Maximize your day by getting up 30-40 minutes early. Take a deep breath and focus your thoughts on the day ahead. Set a positive intention, which can also be just a word: patience, positivity, or loving-kindness. Visualize yourself achieving this goal, allowing it to guide your actions and interactions with your family.
I WILL DELEGATE TASKS:
• Create a chore chart with age-appropriate tasks, such as making beds, packing lunches, or cleaning their rooms.
• Establish clear expectations and rewards for completing chores.
• Encourage responsibility and teamwork by rotating tasks regularly.
• Provide guidance and support to help them succeed.
I WILL TAKE A MEDITATION BREAK: Here are two meditation apps that can be beneficial for stressed-out caregivers:
• Insight Timer: A free meditation app with a vast collection of guided meditations and music tracks from various teachers and traditions.
• Calm: Another well-known meditation app providing guided meditations, sleep stories, breathing exercises, and relaxing music. It has a dedicated section called "Calm Kids" offering suitable meditation and mindfulness exercises for children. While these apps provide guidance and support, it's important to find what works best for you personally, as everyone's meditation journey is unique.
I WILL SCHEDULE SOME "ME" TIME: Make it a point to prioritize "me" time and allow yourself the freedom to schedule activities that bring you joy. Treat yourself, explore a new yoga or pilates class, or embark on a pickleball adventure. These moments can help restore balance to your day, and in doing so you will find yourself feeling more energized and prepared to tackle the rest of your agenda.
I WILL EMBRACE NEW BEGINNINGS: Remember, amidst the busyness, savor the small moments that make this time of year special.

Temple Dor Dorim Education is a priority from 3 months to 120 years Old
Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center welcomes students back to Weston’s only preschool accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Change is in the air at the school after long-time Director Shelia Woldenberg’s retirement. Her legacy will be continued by the extremely capable dynamic duo of Director Sandra Blasberg and Assistant Director Judy Frye.
Sandra joined the Temple Dor Dorim family in June. She brings a 25-year career’s worth of experience and an infectious enthusiasm to the role.
“I am really looking forward to welcoming everyone back for the new school year,” said Sandra, “when I was exploring job opportunities, it was clear Temple Dor Dorim is a real community where families are valued.”
Judy, who is a native of Weston, has been working with the school since February 2020. Early childhood education is a true calling for her. She chose to teach at multiple Title 1 schools in the New York City school system before moving back to Weston and joining Temple Dor Dorim. She was instrumental in shepherding the school through the COVID years.
“Our teachers are highly trained, talented, and dedicated,” said Judy, “Many have been part of the school for a long time. It’s generational. Some of our teachers now have their grandchildren in the school.”
The school earned its reaccreditation with NAEYC last November. It is the only school in the area with this prestigious recognition. Part of the school’s accreditation process is ensuring teachers participate in continuing education, improving how they interact with students on a daily basis.
Open to All
“The school is open to everyone in the community,” said Sandra, “We are a Jewish Reform temple, but welcome students from all faiths and backgrounds. We believe values are universal and that if we teach those values to kids when they are little, it will take them through life.”
Play-Based Learning
Religious School
In addition to the Preschool, Dor Dorim is home to Our City Weston’s Best Religious School. The Religious School Program, which is continuing to grow, begins at kindergarten and continues through twelfth grade.
“The Religious school at TDD is an environment where our students can develop and nurture a love of being Jewish," said Religious School Director, Jessica Smiley, "This cannot be measured in knowledge of Hebrew or memorization of prayers, but rather in the hearts of our students and families. Their pride in being Jewish will be a strong foundation throughout their lives.”
Certified, Caring, Accredited Faculty
Temple Dor Dorim has dedicated, highly competent teachers. All of the head teachers and assistant teachers at the school hold early childhood certifications. In addition, the entire staff participates in ongoing workshops and conferences, ensuring the school’s professional commitment to teaching.
The school operates with a play-based learning paradigm. They believe children develop a world of knowledge through creative play. Play provides children with hands-on experiences that help them grow developmentally, cognitively, emotionally, and socially. With play as an integral component of the curriculum, it encourages a warm, nurturing environment where children feel safe to take risks while exploring their world. This type of environment stimulates curiosity and fosters a lifelong love of learning.
Because of significant demand from parents, Temple Dor Dorim reinstated a kindergarten class for the 2023-24 school year. This class will allow kids to experience one-on-one teaching opportunities with a low teacher-to-student ratio.
TDD strives to use the rich and beautiful culture and history of the Jewish people to create an inclusive program that children will be drawn to and love. This includes age-appropriate experiential learning that focuses on Jewish holidays, values, history, current events, Israel, and Hebrew. The goal is to create an environment where children find meaning and love in TDD's holy community.
Safety First
Safety is paramount at Temple Dor Dorim. Full-time security is on-site at all times, along with state-of-the-art security systems. The school recently implemented new self-locking classroom doors, along with a key-card entry system, to ensure students are safe.
▸ There are opportunities to learn at Temple Dor Dorim & its Early Childhood Center from ages 3 months to adult education.
Visit during the Welcome Weekend and Open House August 25-27.

PEDIatric Foot & Ankle Sprains May Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
Injuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. X-rays can fail to provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present.
Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of 13 and 18, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone.
Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating.
X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary.
Treatment options include:
1. Immobilization in a below-theknee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster it heals.
2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Non-weight bearing would be mandatory.
3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked.
The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment.

ndeed, it is true that people learn foreign languages for various reasons such as work, study, relocating to new countries, or simply for personal satisfaction. Through this process, individuals gain a multicultural perspective and become more compassionate, fostering connections with diverse people worldwide. However, have you ever considered the profound impact that studying a new language has on the brain?
Learning a new language brings about changes in the brain, which has been proven by research studies. The process of acquiring a foreign language has fascinating effects on the neurological aspects of the brain. Through the use of MRI technology, experts have been able to compare the brain functions of individuals who are monolingual with

Ithose who are bilingual. The findings indicate that bilingual individuals have a greater number of connections between neurons, known as grey matter, which includes the cell body and dendrites. Additionally, bilingual brains exhibit changes in the white matter, a nerve system that connects the brain's four lobes. This promotes faster learning and increased memory capacity, along with improved focus, attention, and executive functions. Furthermore, the constant filtering of linguistic information during the foreign language learning process has been found to reduce the risk of developing neurological conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, the benefits of learning a second language extend beyond neurological effects. Second-language learners experience enhancements in academic performance, communication skills, and creativity. These benefits are not limited by age, as learners of all ages can engage in effective brain workouts by acquiring
new words, grammatical constructs, and building upon existing knowledge. Consequently, studying a new language strengthens brain signals and elevates cognitive abilities. Bilingualism and biculturalism are not only associated with personal and social virtues, but they also offer impressive neurological advantages.
Acquiring a foreign language is an invaluable skill that persists throughout one's lifetime, providing consistent neurological benefits regardless of age. Speaking a new language is a cognitive exercise that fuels the brain's capabilities.

SAFELY HEADING BACK TO SCHOOL
By Melanie Brocato
As we head back to school, it is important that drivers consider traffic changes to ensure safe travel as the roadways get busier. Parents and caregivers should take time to review their child(ren)s school transportation plans. Additionally, parents should consider additional safety tips to help keep their child(ren) safe at school.
With the start of each new school year, roadways get busier. Drivers should plan to pack their patience as they navigate traffic congestion and school zones. Always follow posted speed limits, wear your seat belt, practice distraction-free driving, share the roadway with bicyclists, and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Do not pass school buses that are loading or unloading children and be sure to follow the school’s pick-up/drop-off procedures.
If your child(ren) walks to school, review a safe walking route with them. If possible, younger children should walk with an adult or older sibling. Children should walk on the sidewalk whenever possible and always cross at a crosswalk, following guidelines from crossing guards when available. Walkers should avoid distractions and be sure to make eye contact with drivers prior to crossing the street.
If children ride a bike to school, they must follow the rules of the road and wear a properly fitted bike helmet. If your child needs a bicycle helmet, you may contact our Life Safety Educator to schedule an appointment for a helmet fitting and obtain a free bicycle helmet*. If possible, encourage children to wear bright clothing making them more visible to drivers and always avoid distractions while riding.
If your child(ren) rides the bus, be sure they know where their bus stop is and what time it arrives. Children should stand at least six feet from the road while waiting for the bus and never run into the roadway.
If you have a teen driver driving themselves to and from school, be sure to review your family’s expectations for safe driving. Safe driving should always include wearing a seat belt, obeying posted speed limits, and distraction-free driving. Be sure your teen is familiar with GDL Laws that pertain to their age and driving status. For more information on Florida’s GLD Law, please visit https:// www.flhsmv.gov.
To help keep kids safe at school, follow these safety tips to help avoid common school-related injuries. When choosing a backpack for your child, consider one that is comfortable and fits them well. Encourage children not to overstuff their backpack and to wear it using both straps to distribute weight evenly. Children should be cautious if using a rolling backpack to ensure they do not create a trip hazard in crowded hallways. Be sure children wear closed-toe shoes and know how to tie their shoelaces if they have them. If school ID’s are required and lanyards are worn, be sure they have break away clasps. Avoid long necklaces or anything that can get caught while playing on the playground. Additionally, summer heat extends well into the school year. Be sure children have plenty of water to stay hydrated to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Heading back to school can be a fun, busy time for many. Remembering some important tips can help parents/caregivers and children head back to school safely.
*Bicycle Helmets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

How Good Is Your Alignment?
The single most important –and frequently overlooked – full swing fundamental in golf is the setup position. So, here are some step-bystep tips for how to take your stance and achieve that per fect setup.
Alignment in the Golf Stance
At address your body (feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders and eyes) should be positioned parallel to the target line. When viewed from behind, a right-handed golfer will appear aimed slightly left of the target. This optical illusion is created because the ball is on the target line and the body is not.
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Foot Position
Your feet should start out shoulder-width apart but adjust depending on whether you’re playing woods/long irons, middle irons or short irons.
The feet should be shoulder-width (outside of the shoulders to the inside of the heels) for the middle irons. The short iron stance will be two inches narrower and the stance for long irons and woods should be two inches wider. The target-side foot should be flared toward the target from 20 to 40 degrees to allow the body to rotate toward the target on the downswing. The back foot should be square (90 degrees to the target line) to slightly open to create the proper hip turn on the back swing. Your flexibility and body rotation speed determine the proper foot placement.
Ball Position in the Golf Stance
The position of the golf ball in one’s stance varies depending on the club used. The ball placement in your setup position varies with the club you select. Your middle irons should be played in the middle of your stance.
The correct ball position for the long
irons and fairway woods plus your driver is to be played off the inside left heel.
Keep
Your Weight on the Balls of Your Feet
Your weight should be balanced on the balls of the feet, not on the heels or toes. With short irons, your weight should be 60% on the target-side foot. For middle iron shots the weight should be 50/50 or equal on each foot. For your longest clubs, place 60% of your weight on the backside foot. This will help you swing the club on the correct angle on the back swing.
The Final Setup Positions
Always practice proper alignment out on the driving range by placing two clubs down on the ground parallel to each other after you feel you are properly aligned to your intended target and see how well you are lined up. Better yet, while on the golf course ask your playing partner to stand behind you and see if you are properly aligned. The best way is to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional just on alignment. They are the experts in the game.

Ear Infections
By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
What Is an Ear Infection?
The medical term for an ear infection is otitis. Ear infections generally begin as inflammation of the skin inside the outer ear canal (the tube-shaped part of the ear visible under the ear flap). Once inflammation is present, discharge, redness, and other characteristics of an ear infection become established. Inflammation of the canal leads to the overgrowth of normal bacteria and yeast that live in the ear; other “opportunistic” bacteria can also take advantage of the inflammation and unhealthy environment inside the ear to establish infection. The overgrowth of these organisms causes more inflammation and other unhealthy changes inside the ear. In some cases, ear infections that start in the outer ear canal can progress to involve the middle ear and inner ear. Deep infections can lead to deafness and other complications.
What Causes Ear Infections?
Any pet can develop otitis regardless of ear shape, exposure to water (swimming), or the amount of hair inside the ear canal. Ear infections in dogs and cats are most often the result of an underlying problem. Many conditions can predispose a pet to developing an ear infection, including the following:
▸ Allergies (food allergy or inhalant allergy)
▸ Ear mites
▸ Polyps or other growths in the ear canal
▸ Systemic illnesses such as thyroid disease and adrenal gland disease (in dogs)
▸ Foreign material in the ears, including dirt, sand, or plant material
Ear infections are painful. Some pets with this condition may even try to bite people who try to touch their ears or head (including their owners). The clinical signs of otitis can vary depending on the severity of the inflammation, but can include the following:
▸ Shaking the head or rubbing the head and ears on the floor or on furniture
▸ Scratching the ears
▸ Discharge from the ears (can sometimes have a very bad odor)
▸ Redness of the ear canal and ear flap; the ears may also feel warm when touched
Some pets with severe otitis may cry or groan as they rub and scratch their ears. Some pets scratch so severely that their nails create wounds on the skin around their face, neck, and ears. If the otitis is severe or chronic, the outer ear canal can begin to thicken and become deformed. This thickening can make the ear opening very narrow, so cleaning the ears becomes more difficult. Ulcerations on the inside of the ear canal can also result from infection and trauma.
Why Are Antibiotics Necessary to Treat Ear Infections?
Once the inflammation associated with an ear infection is established, bacteria (and yeast) can create secondary infections. These infections can be relatively straightforward to diagnose and treat with antibiotics or anti-fungal medications. Still, the underlying reason for the inflammation must be addressed, or the secondary infections are likely to recur. Diagnosing the underlying cause can be challenging and may require additional testing.
During a physical examination, your veterinarian may use a cotton swab to collect some debris from your pet’s ear. This material can be placed on a slide and examined under a microscope to determine if the infection is due to yeast, bacteria, or mites. Your veterinarian may also recommend bacterial culture and sensitivity testing of the debris found inside your pet’s ear. This information can help determine the best medications to treat the infection.
Your veterinarian will also likely clean your pet’s ears to remove as much debris as possible before treatment begins. Cleaning begins creating a healthier environment inside the ear—an environment that will not continue to support bacterial overgrowth.
How Can Future Ear Infections Be Prevented?
Once an infection has resolved, regular cleaning helps prevent recurrence by promoting a healthy environment inside the outer ear canal. Never insert a cotton swab into your pet’s ear canal; these swabs can rupture the eardrum, which could lead to additional complications. If you are uncomfortable cleaning your pet’s ears, ask your veterinary team to review ear cleaning procedures with you.
Underlying conditions, such as allergies, should also be addressed to help prevent recurrence of ear infections.
Returning for regular check-ups with your veterinarian is also an important way to track your pet’s progress and catch ear infections early before they have a chance to get firmly reestablished.

KIDCARE NOW SIGNED INTO LAW!
lorida’s working families have been facing serious financial demands. Families struggle to feed their kids and put a roof over their heads. They have also been struggling to afford healthcare for their children – their most precious asset.
After 3 years of advocating for the expansion of the Florida KidCare Eligibility Program, my bipartisan bill finally passed both Chambers during this past Legislative Session. Furthermore, on June 22nd, Governor Ron DeSantis signed this bill into law.
The Florida KidCare Program provides health insurance coverage for families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid. Before this legislation, KidCare eligibility sat at 200% of
By State Representative Robin Bartleman
Fthe Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Now, working families at up to 300% of the poverty level can qualify for healthcare coverage. This law creates a glide path with different premium tiers for families. As they make more, they will contribute more. This is a hand-up for working families, not a handout. This change will go into effect January 1, 2024.
For too long, working families feared losing healthcare coverage for their children if they made a few extra dollars from a promotion or pay raise. Now, these parents and guardians who have struggled can breathe knowing they can protect their children in the years to come. As they earn more, they will contribute more, and the new system will set families up for economic prosperity. This bill is projected to help over 77,000 families in its first year and hundreds of thousands of families thereafter.

GREETINGS FROM YOUR Chamber President!
By Patty Archer
In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the support of pro-business policies are crucial for fostering economic prosperity. As a Chamber of Commerce, we understand the vital role we play in promoting the growth and success of our local business community. By advocating for policies that create a favorable business environment, we can drive economic growth and enhance our area’s competitiveness.
Legislative Advocacy serves as a powerful catalyst for change, providing a platform for businesses to voice their concerns, ideas, and aspirations. By actively engaging with policymakers and stakeholders, we can help shape policies that reduce regulatory burdens, foster innovation, and create opportunities for businesses to thrive. Pro-business policies, such as tax incentives, streamlined licensing processes, and infrastructure improvements, help attract investment, encourage entrepreneurship, and create jobs.
We invite you to join us for our 2nd Annual Eggs & Issues Legislative Breakfast, sponsored by Waste Pro and hosted by our parent chamber Miramar-Pembroke Pines, on Wednesday, August 30th. A number of our local elected officials will be joining us for a discussion and taking questions ahead of the fall committee sessions in Tallahassee. Attendees must register through our events calendar.
It is important to recognize that advocacy is an ongoing effort. The Chamber continues to build relationships, communicate positions through our legislative agenda, and keep you informed about emerging issues and opportunities. The Chamber takes seriously its responsibility for advocacy work that strengthens the collective voice of our business community. Together, we can advocate for policies that support a vibrant business ecosystem, benefiting not only our members but also the entire community.
