Weston is 25!

(We Take Extra Precautions for Our Patient’s Safety) SAWGRASS DENTAL CENTER

O

n September 3, 1996, the residents of the Indian Trace Community Development District went to the polls, and of those voting, 90% voted in favor of incorporation. The City of Weston was born! Since then Weston has become one of the premier places to live and raise a family in the country. There are many reasons to love living in Weston. Many young families are drawn here because of the exceptional public schools. Others enjoy the large, well-cared-for parks. Some admire the active arts & music community that is typically only found in much bigger communities. Everyone appreciates the low crime rate and top-rated public services.

We think the foundation under all of Weston’s wonderful attributes is the strong sense of community found within its residents. The Weston community is what makes all the other aspects of the city work. Happy 25th birthday to Weston and congratulations to you, the members of this wonderful community.

Fox Vein & Laser Experts Varicose Veins & Beyond!

Dr. Susan Fox DO, RPVI , FSVM , DABVLM

Dr. Fox is Board Certified in Vascular Medicine and an expert in varicose vein treatment and laser procedures. She was Fellowship trained at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and was on the teaching faculty at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Fox has been featured in several news programs, articles and has lectured extensively on

varicose veins and laser procedures.

F

or years, Fox Vein and Laser Experts has been at the forefront of vein therapy and laser procedures. Around five years ago, Dr Fox expanded the practice to include many non-invasive cutting-edge procedures such as micro-needling, tattoo removal, hydrofacials, PRP, hair restoration, skin rejuvenation, peels, lasers and so much more. They have the best equipment and are industry leaders in all that they offer. Now, the practice is expanding and offering even more cutting-edge treatments. They will be one of the first practices in the USA to offer Physiq and Virtue RF. These machines by Cartessa Aesthetics provide FDA approved non-invasive treatments with little to no down time to help you look your best. Physiq is a non- invasive body treatment to rid you of those hard-to-treat areas that weight loss and diet leave untouched. This new state of the art machine uses four pads to treat multiple areas of the body, at once to obtain a leaner, more sleek physique. It is not painful yet is highly effective and has no down-time unlike the plastic surgery procedures of tummy tucks and liposuction. No anesthetic is necessary and yet it is extremely effective and affordable. Many of the body contouring machines are extremely uncomfortable and do not work well. Physiq is the first to use STEP technology (Sequential Thermal and Electrical Pulse) muscle stimulation with laser lipolysis in a sequential manner with contact cooling. The patient can control the energy and comfort level making the procedure relatively pain-free with no down time. It can treat multiple body parts at once inner thighs, buttocks abdominals, flanks to name a few. Deka is the leading laser manufacturer in Europe and they are making this for Cartessa. The Physiq will rapidly become an industry leader and is already being hailed as the newest and best thing in body contouring. The treatments are recommended every two-weeks and five sessions are suggested for optimal results. The treatments are faster and more comfortable than other body contouring machines and is fully FDA approved and safe to use. The other new machine being offered at Fox Vein and Laser Experts is the Virtue RF. This machine takes micro-needling to a whole new level. It is faster, more customizable and less painful than its predecessors. This machine uses 36 gold coated needles at one of three treatment speeds with robotic precision delivery to provide the best micro-needling radiofrequency

It can also be used with PRP or a proprietary stem cell system to help hair loss. Only the Virtue RF pairs the treatment with LED red or blue light to help with acne or signs of aging. The facial treatments can be followed by a microcurrent dual face mask system by Franz Skincare. This mask uses ion currents and patented Tissue X technology to transport the nourishing substances deeper into the dermis where they help the most. The other amazing aspect of the Virtue machine is the ability to completely turn off the radiofrequency if desired. This is very helpful when we are micro-needling for hair loss or on patients who have defibrillators or pacemakers. These new machines are FDA approved and at the forefront of new and innovative less invasive, less painful treatment options to get you looking your best for the years to come. As always, Fox Vein & Laser Experts are at the forefront of vein treatment and are recognized experts in venous care. If you are ready to treat your varicose veins, you’re likely tired of their unsightly appearance or, more importantly, want to rid yourself of them for good so that they don’t cause more health problems down the line. With Covid-19, life is not normal but people have more opportunity to take the time to treat themselves. As well, varicose vein treatments are often covered by insurance or can be funded through health spending accounts. Whichever the reason, treating your varicose veins means getting to know the different varicose vein removal procedures at Fox Vein & Laser Experts, South Florida’s best vein removal center. When you’re ready to undergo treatments for vein removal, it’s likely that you’ve already done your research. You’ve probably looked up the best vein removal treatment centers in

South Florida and asked the basics like, “Are laser vein removal treatments effective”? And, “wiil they hurt?” “For years now, I’ve come across hundreds of patients who would visit our office feeling apprehensive about their vein removal treatments,” Dr. Susan Fox, owner and founder of Fox Vein & Laser Experts says. “They don’t realize that by treating their veins, they may be opening up their world to a range of health benefits and overall improved comfort.” Providing you relief, both physically and aesthetically, from your varicose veins, has been a passion of ours for as long as we’ve been in business. We know how important feeling and looking good is to your daily routine, which is why we have a multitude of ways to treat your leg veins once and for all. “We want to ensure that no matter your age, skin type, or vascular issues, there is a way for your legs to be restored to good health,” Dr. Susan Fox says. “The reason why we have so many different varicose vein treatments is because there are many different types of veins, and we like to be specific to get you the best results. Here are some of the treatment options available at Fox Vein & Laser Experts: Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT) One of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a success rate of 98 -100 percent, endovenous laser ablation involves inserting a thin laser fiber through the affected vein. It involves no incisions and thus leaves no scars. .Small pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. During the treatment process, the blood from these veins is redirected to better and more competent veins and the insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. Sounds perfect? Wait, it gets better. These kinds of procedures can be done in less than a 30 minute window with little to no down-time afterwards.

Varithena

Ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins, foam sclerotherapy is a safe and effective vein BEFORE AFTER BEFORE AFTER removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a solution is injected directly into the affected veins. When injected as a foam rather than a liquid, the solution can target some of the larger varicose veins As Featured On Channel 10 News by irritating the vein lining for longer and Vein & Laser Experts For Decades pushing the blood out of the way, causing Winner Best Vein Practice - Weston

the walls to stick together and close shut. While you may feel a pinch at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy is not considered painful. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct the foam into the problematic veins watching everything along the way. The person has no down time, usually minimal to no pain and only needs to stay active and wear compression hose afterwards.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

A surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins, ambulatory phlebectomy is often an in-office procedure that requires local anesthetic (think lidocaine like at the dentist). The veins are teased out through the tiny holes without causing any major scarring which is a significant advancement from the extensive vein stripping procedures of the past. Most often this is done with pinholes that don’t even need to be closed with sutures and most people return to normal activities immediately afterward without much recovery time.

Spider Vein Removal

Spider veins removal is deemed cosmetic even though they may cause symptoms. The gold standard is sclerotherapy where a solution is injected into the vein with a teeny-tiny needle and the vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut closing the tiny vein over several weeks. It may take several sessions for all of the veins to go away. If a person is afraid of needles, laser is an option and we have cutaneous lasers as well, that remove tiny veins without much difficulty. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or miniscule red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh which uses microbursts of energy to close teeny veins without any down time or scarring. This procedure often seals the tiny veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions with amazing results. These are just a few of the treatment options offered at Fox Vein & Laser Experts South Florida’s Vein and Laser Experts. With many more options to choose from, we encourage you to call and set up a consultation to determine the best course of treatment for your varicose veins, skin and body today!

ASK THE EXPERT

Gynecology Myths By Scott Jordan MD

Myth 1: Pap

smears test for all gynecologic

cancers

Pap smears are only designed to detect cervical cancer (or precancer cells). They do not screen for ovarian or uterine cancer.

Myth 2: A “total” hysterectomy removes the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries, while a “partial” hysterectomy only removes the uterus and cervix Removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries, called a salpingo-oophorectomy, is always a separate procedure from a hysterectomy, which is only the removal of the

uterus. Technically, a “total” hysterectomy includes removal of the cervix, while a “partial” or “supra-cervical” hysterectomy, leaves the cervix behind.

Myth 3: Some spotting is normal after menopause Uterine bleeding is never normal after menopause and should always be investigated by a gynecologist. It can be a warning sign of endometrial cancer or a precancerous lesion and may need to be treated.

Myth 4: After my hysterectomy, I do not need to see a gynecologist All women should continue to follow with a gynecologist for annual exams. If ovaries are left behind, there is still a risk of developing ovarian cysts or

even ovarian cancer. Vulvar and vaginal symptoms can also be evaluated. An annual pelvic exam can detect abnormalities early, before a potential problem becomes worse.

Myth 5: If I am post-menopausal, there is no reason to keep my ovaries at the time of my hysterectomy Very large population-based studies have demonstrated a decrease in risk of death from any cause in women under age 65 who kept their ovaries at the time of their hysterectomy if there was no indication to remove them. There is also a decreased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, and improved heart health. Even after menopause, your ovaries still work to keep you healthy!

ABOUT 10,500 CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 15 WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER THIS YEAR.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Some Thoughts on Legacy

L

By Bruce Iden, Esquire

egacy means so much more than the assets we leave behind in the form of an inheritance. Most of us never give much thought to what our legacy might be, but rather we think about a will or trust that carefully lays out how our property is distributed after we are gone. It’s usually about our “stuff.” Interestingly, studies on adults and their inheritances may surprise and disappoint you. The Journal of Family and Economic Issues reported that adults who receive an inheritance save only half of what they receive. Other studies point to statistics showing virtually all money or property left to loved ones in the form of an inheritance is spent within nine months. So thinking in terms of money and property, a legacy has a very short shelf life. With that in mind, let’s explore other ways to leave a legacy that will live on long after you are gone. Charitable Giving. Most obviously charitable giving provides support to a cause or causes you deem important. But it is also a teaching moment for your loved ones; it reinforces the importance of providing for the greater good. Many of us have made quiet personal promises to support a charity or cause “later,” or “when we can better afford it.” Making room in your final wishes for charitable giving answers those promises. Aside from the tax advantage charitable bequests generate, this selfless act can echo for generations. Many people leave a percentage of their estate to charity instead of a specific dollar amount. By leaving a percentage, your family and charity will receive proportionate shares regardless of how large or small your estate is. Instead of leaving money to a charity in a will, you may also consider naming a charity as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement plan. Ethical will. An ethical will has ancient origins, originally appearing in the Book of Genesis when a dying Jacob spoke with his sons to share wisdom and his hopes for how they should live their lives. Originally, ethical wills were communicated orally, but were later written as letters. Today, ethical wills are known as “legacy letters.” It is a way to communicate to loved ones your hopes and dreams, regrets, and lessons learned. Often apologies are offered and forgiveness is sought. Family lore, favorite jobs, funny stories may all be part of your letter. Think of a legacy letter as a way to pass along wisdom and love to a future generation. Preserving family history. Consider writing down your family stories on your own or through a subscription such as StoryWorth. It’s a way to collect family stories and preserve them in a keepsake book. The recipient of a StoryWorth gift is emailed questions each week for a year, but they can skip a week or select their own prompts. These questions are a starting point to tell your story and document your family history. A true gift for your family. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington Universi▸ Bruce ty National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the Uni-

versity of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

inally, the show will go on! Once again, the curtain is finally preparing to rise again at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) for the 2021/2022 season. However, show business is no easy feat. It is not just who is on the stage that is important, it is all the people behind (and in front) of the scenes that make a production look seamless. The Center is looking for volunteer ushers to serve as community ambassadors at the Broward Center and its affiliated venues: The Parker, the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Southeastern University, and the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Throughout the years there has been a dynamic mix of theater-

our Broward County high school students and recent graduates were selected as Bank of America Student Leaders ® including Grace Baek of Cypress Bay High School. The Bank of America Charitable Foundation selects a small number of high school juniors and seniors for this coveted position in their program. The selection for the prestigious internship is based on the students’ commitment to serving the community along with their outstanding academic achievements. Grace was chosen because she has contributed hundreds of hours to Refugee Assistance Alliance, serving as a content creator to promote the organization's mission and as a tutor for a third-grade Syrian refugee whom she taught English and Math. She also founded an organization called “Fight for Asians” to fight anti-Asian racism and represent Asian culture. Additionally, she carries the title of President for the National

Honor Society and the Step-Up Club where she tutors students during study hall. “I've always been passionate about serving others and spend my time mentoring underserved refugee children in South Florida, distributing supplies to families in Immokalee living below the poverty line, fundraising for adult autism advocacy, etc, “ explained Grace. As Student Leaders, the ambitious teens participated in a paid summer internship program where they gained exposure to the public-private partnerships that advance community health and enact positive social change. “My experience as a Bank of America Student Leader has been really rewarding and honestly so much fun! I was paired with the YMCA of South Florida and had the opportunity to create infographics, lead a Teen Town Hall, meet the CEO, develop leadership skills, discuss economic policy

with members of Congress, and much more. But the best part was getting to know the other student leaders, who are all incredibly inspiring and unique in their own ways. It felt like a dream come true to be selected for the program and I know I’ll never forget the experience,” exclaimed the passionate teen. Outside of school, one may find Grace singing along at K-pop concerts, reading great books, and searching for the best boba places. After graduation, the ambitious leader wants to spend time in the Peace Corps and ultimately publish a novel.

Although fifteen athletes from West Express Elite qualified for the 2021 Track & Field season, only ten could attend. All Nicole Shore

One of these silver medalists was Nicole Shore, a 2021 graduate of Cypress Bay High School. The ambitious runner with autism competed in the 1500-meter run and 3000meter racewalk. The determined athlete ultimately ranked second in the nation proving that anyone can achieve anything they put their mind to regardless of ability. “West Express is the type of organization that has a big heart to allow anyone no matter what their circumstance to compete with kids that don’t have disabilities,” explained Head of Athletics/Head Coach Antwon Chaney. “Nicole showed courage and toughness, plus she’s always been consistent in all she does. Reflections on 9/11

O

n September 11, 2001, Miramar Police Captain Mike Yepez was wearing a different uniform. He was working as a New York City Police Department (NYPD) patrol officer. Below is his personal story of that fateful day: I used to work the night shift. When I would arrive home at around 6:30-7:00 a.m., I would always unplug my home phone to sleep without interruptions. For some unknown reason I didn’t unplug my phone that day. That had never happened. At around 8 a.m. I received a call from my lieutenant and was told I had to come in for court. As I was driving on the Verrazano Bridge, listening to the radio, I heard about a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. I thought it was a bad joke until I looked up and saw the smoke. I passed the toll bridge and saw the second plane strike the second tower. I knew then it was no accident. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. My fiancé at the time, Jenny, was working at the World Trade Center building 7. Along with the towers, that building collapsed as well. Cell phones were not as common as they are today. We didn’t own one and I was concerned and unable to get a hold of her. I remember walking into the 66 Precinct, and everyone was crying. I was told to suit up in our riot gear. There was an utter silence in the locker room. That was uncommon. Usually, guys were joking around and being loud. Fifteen of us squeezed into a transport van and headed toward the towers. Vehicles in the Battery Tunnel were not moving. We evacuated everyone in the cars and decided to walk through the Battery tunnel into Manhattan. The site looked like a scene from a movie… a cloud of dust; people running, screaming, crying; chaos. It seemed unreal. I kept thinking about how to get into contact with Jenny.

By: Captain Mike Yepez Our assignment was to help with rescue efforts. Exhausted from the previous shift and with no sleep, I worked for another 38 hours. We all wanted to save someone. That’s what pushed us to continue working, while breathing in soot. At that point we had no masks, and we didn’t care. I was relieved of duty for twelve hours and was able to go home. That’s when I found out Jenny had survived. She had walked out of her building after the first plane hit and decided not to go back in. She walked that day for hours and hours to her parents’ home in New Jersey. For the next three months many NYPD officers worked twelve hour shifts with no days off. I felt as if I was on autopilot. I didn’t have the leisure to feel anything. It took six months for what occurred to really sink-in. Jenny didn’t have a job anymore; knew she wouldn’t be seeing much of me during the recovery efforts and decided to stay with her parents in their second home in Miramar. Nine months later I decided to give South Florida a try, but in my heart I felt I would be back in New York within a year. And I was… I had taken a short trip back to file paperwork for my return to the NYPD. That trip conjured up many memories, good and bad. When I returned to the Florida sunshine, I decided my life would continue here. I love New York, but 9/11 had forever

42 / Our City Weston / September 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

changed the course of my life and career. The Miramar Police Department became my home in 2002. Grateful for what the department has offered me throughout my career, I find great joy in mentoring new recruits. When I was asked to write about my 9/11 experience, I pulled from an album an old picture of me in my NYPD uniform. The kid in that picture had no idea what he was getting himself into. However, every time he put that uniform on, he enjoyed every minute of it and did it with pride and honor. When I left New York, I bought a video commemorating 9/11. I have yet been able to watch it. It took me about 10 years before I was able to even speak about what happened that day and deal with all of the emotions. We often hear the term “Never Forget.” On this 20th Anniversary of 9/11, I will ‘Never Forget’ the pride we felt to be an American at that time. It didn’t matter what your background was or what uniform you were wearing that day. We all came together and showed the world the compassion we had for each other. Captain Mike Yepez will be a guest speaker at Miramar’s 9/11 Memorial Site Dedication on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, 9:30 a.m. at Miramar Regional Park. The event is open to the public. OUR CITY’S

Celebrating Weston’s 25th CELEBR ATION

By Terry Jaillet

T

he City of Weston is celebrating its Silver Anniversary! This little piece of paradise was carved out of the Everglades in 1978 as a development called Indian Trace. Three years later, the Indian Trace Community Development District was formed and work began on creating the community that would eventually become Weston. By 1984, the development’s name had been officially changed to Weston and its first residents were moving into the Windmill Ranch and Country Isles neighborhoods. A little over a decade later the residents of the Indian Trace joined with residents from the Bonaventure community and voted to incorporate into the City of Weston. Weston’s first Mayor, Harry Rosen, had his work cut out for him. The brand-new city was one of the fastest-growing cities in America and needed all of the services that residents of a first-class city expect. Lucky for him, the City Commission and residents of Weston has the same passion for excellence that he did. Over the following years, Weston grew through the annexation of several plots of land in 1999 and 2004. The city is now comprised of almost 25 square miles of land and 1.5 square miles of water. There are about 71,000 residents from wonderfully diverse backgrounds and locations across the globe.

Weston’s 1st commission: (R to L) Steve Keller, Eric Hersh, Mayor Harry Rosen, Mark Myers & Edwin Jacobson

Weston Town Center

Weston is home to six public elementary schools, two middle schools, and Cypress Bay High School. Some residents also attend Western High School in Davie. The schools are all A-rated by the Florida Department of Education. The city is also home to four private schools, 12 public parks, and one of the highest-rated hospitals in Florida, The Cleveland Clinic. Throughout its growth, Weston has always been a family-focused community. Weston has been one of the safest cities in Florida for over a decade, enjoys the lowest real estate millage rate in Broward County, and offers its residents a broad range of family-oriented community services.

Weston is home to a number of cultural and service organizations, including the Weston Arts Council, the Weston Music Society, and The Rotary Club of Weston to name a few. The city hosts several cultural events every year including the Weston World Fest, Weston Film Festival, and the city’s much-loved Independence Day celebration. Weston has been a great place to live and raise a family since its inception. Its first 25 years were marked by rapid growth and a common bond of community. We can’t wait to see what the next 25 years have in store!

for local office was never a consideration,” commented Mayor Brown, “however, in my role as Executive Director for the Center for Hearing and Communication, I became more involved with issues that were impacting residents in our community… I was honored to have an opportunity to serve the community in a way that allows me to be an integral part of maintaining the quality of life and making Weston a better and safe place to live.” Peggy and her husband, Eric Byron Brown, are proud parents of two adult daughters, a son-in-law and, three grandsons.

hef Andrea Fadda began his culinary career at a young age. When he was just a boy, Andrea was inspired by the tastes and scents of the wonderful Sardinian dishes his parents made each night. He went on to Culinary School and then worked under renowned chefs across the world. “I continued to develop my skills in 5-star hotels all over the world, from the Emerald Coast of Sardinia to the Maldives Islands, Zanzibar, Cuba and Egypt,” recalled Andrea, “Since starting my career, my dream has always been to own a Sardinian restaurant where I could create a

menu that includes Sardinian dishes, Italian favorites and dishes that reflect my vast travels all over the world.” In 2015 Andrea and his partners opened Zona Blu on Weston Road. Since that day he has been fulfilling his mission: to bring a bit of Sardina’s lifestyle and cuisine to Weston. Unlike some chefs, Andrea enjoys meeting with guests as much as he does cooking. “I truly enjoy being in the dining room and getting to know my customers. I am fortunate to be a part of diverse and welcoming community and am grateful for the lifelong friendships I have made since opening Zona Blu.”

ne of the things that makes Weston unique, when compared to neighboring communities, is its homey small-town feel. There are few places in the country where people from multiple cultures, speaking different languages, even from different continents can gather and still feel like they are part of one community. One key aspect that the best “small towns” have is an accessible town square where people go to gather, meet with friends and spend time together. This is what Weston Town Center is all about. Perhaps the best

thing about Weston Town Center are the wonderful community events held there throughout the year. All of the events hosted by the Weston Town Center have one thing in common: Angie Paulson & Camila Martinez. Without these two women, there would be no Christmas, Chabad of Weston, Easter, Halloween, Food & Wine Festival, or Friday Night Markets Celebrations! Angie recalled, “when my kids became teenagers I became passionate about doing community events.” We are all better off because of Angie’s passion.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is

FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

ASK THE EXPERT

T

Do Your Hands Give Away Your Age

he focus of anti-aging procedures often rests in the rejuvenation of the face. A person’s hands are often neglected, and therefore remain a tell-tale sign of aging. The hands are continuously exposed to environmental elements. There are distinct signs of aging seen in one’s hand appearance. Characteristics that are treatable with minimally invasive procedures include visible tendons, the bony appearance, visible/prominent veins along with skin pigmentation changes and wrinkles. These changes occur as a result of progressive thinning of the skin overlying the back of the hand with increased skin laxity and loss of soft tissue volume. Rejuvenation of aging hands involves two distinct factors. Firstly, treatment of the overlying skin to remove age spots, pigmentation, and skin wrinkling or laxity, and secondly restoration of lost volume through soft tissue volume enhancement. Ideal hand rejuvenation is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. The only FDA approved injectable filler for volume restoration in the hands is Radiesse®. This volumizing filler immediately provides the volume and lift that is necessary to diminish the signs of aging hands because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise this product. This filler acts as a scaffold beneath the skin after it is injected providing the structure and stimulating your own natural

collagen to grow. This process continues for several months after Radiesse® is injected, extending the initial effect lasting more than a year to achieve long-lasting hand rejuvenation after a single treatment. By adding volume beneath the skin, Radiesse® raises the skin level so that tendons, joints and veins lose their prominence. Radiesse® is safe, effective and a non-surgical treatment which provides immediate smoothing of wrinkles, scars and replenishes soft tissue volume loss. Radiesse® doesn’t require allergy testing. The procedure is done with topical anesthesia, with injections taking between ten and fifteen minutes. There may be minor swelling, redness or bruising at the site of the injection, which typically resolves within one or two days. The Radiesse® hand lift is the latest procedure that utilizes microspheres of calcium hydoxyapatite to restore a more youthful appearance to the aging hands. Other procedures can be done in conjunction with Radiesse® hand lifts, such as chemical peels and laser rejuvenation to reduce age spots and improve skin texture. Yoga- A Self Regulating Tool for Children

mbracing yoga and its benefits. Yoga has become an essential part of our curriculum and it is being incorporated more and more into public and private schools since it has been discovered that children can benefit greatly from its practice. Yoga helps children develop body awareness and have a handle on stress levels as we teach them to meditate, control their breathing and learn healthy body movements. Research has shown that children that practice yoga on a weekly basis build stronger concentration skills as well. It also helps with developing a positive self-image and more confidence in themselves. In the classroom, both teachers and children benefit from their yoga practice skills. Yoga helps educators by offering an alternative to handle challenges and allows for the integration of healthy activity while releasing tensions through specific movements. The plank pose helps promote more flexibility and core power in the student body, as well as, helps release body tension. Self-regulation is essential for children as they begin to deal with different challenges in the classroom and away. Self-regulation is “the ability to flexibly activate, monitor, inhibit, persevere, and adapt one’s behavior, attention, emotions, and cognitive strategies in response to internal cues, environmental factors, and feedback from others” (Bergen-Cico, et al., 2015, p. 3448). A Child’s Pose is also a great pose for children to learn to feel their belly expanding as they are breathing in and out with the teacher’s instruction. Luckily, practicing yoga is something you can take anywhere. Teachers, parents, as well as caregivers, can benefit greatly from its benefits when they are at home, school, and even during travels and vacations. All it takes is a cozy corner and set intentions to spend the next few minutes or an hour if you would like, embracing each move, each breath, and the benefits it brings as you enjoy the time with your students or child. Namaste.

WHAT IS NEUROLENS?

D

is in close range. As we become more and more reliant on our digital devices, these symptoms have become more and more prevalent. You may have even heard some of these symptoms referred to as Digital Vision Syndrome or Computer Vision Syndrome. Given the events of 2020, remote working and learning has become a reality for many, many people, making eye misalignment and the associated symptoms even more widespread. In fact, at least two out of three people experience the symptoms of eye misalignment! More than 55% of them experience these symptoms on a daily basis.

study concerning Computer Vision Syndrome, 100% of patients suffering from symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome had a positive response to treatment with neurolenses. Many neurolens wearers have been able to greatly reduce or even eliminate the need for pain-relieving medications.

What is eye misalignment?

What are neurolenses and do they work?

You may remember learning that each of your eyes collect visual information independently, and this information is combined into a single image by your brain. Each eye captures a clear photo, much like a camera. Your brain then fuses these two images. This line of communication between your eyes and your brain is a constant process that happens as long as both eyes are open. Some people’s eyes are perfectly aligned, meaning the visual data from their eyes can be combined seamlessly by their brain. But many others have what’s known as eye misalignment. While each eye may capture a clear photo individually, the brain is forced to manually combine every pair of photos. This constant adjustment continuously stimulates a nerve in your brain called the trigeminal nerve, often leading to the symptoms mentioned before. For the vast majority of people with eye misalignment, this misalignment is much more pronounced when focusing on an object that

Inspired by a breakthrough discovery linking optometry and neurology, neurolenses are designed to bring the eyes back into comfortable alignment. To do this, neurolenses incorporate a technology called “contoured prism,” which intelligently places the correction in the lenses where it’s needed most. These lenses can be customized for every patient, and are available in any prescription. They’re even a great solution for contact lens wearers or patients that don’t have a prescription at all. They are premium lenses, and as such come standard in high quality materials and with high quality Anti-Reflective coatings. Most importantly, neurolenses lead to dramatic symptom relief for the majority of wearers. 93% of patients have experienced symptom relief from wearing neurolenses. In fact, 81.6% of patients suffering from chronic daily headaches reported their symptoms were substantially reduced or “basically gone” after wearing neurolenses for 90 days. In a

Do they tend to correspond with long periods of using a computer, tablet, smartphone or even reading? If this describes you, you definitely aren’t alone; and like many others, you’re probably wondering why. Your eyes could be the problem, and neurolenses could be the solution.

TEE TO GREEN

Great Putting Drills By By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

L

ow handicap players understand the importance of a good short game, especially on the putting green. Professional players have exceptional ball striking skills. In fact, a tour event is basically a putting contest. The best putter each week wins the tournament. With the proper techniques, everyone can develop into a solid putter. The following putting drills are designed to improve your ability to hole the ball on the green.

Clock Drill Make the short putts. Nothing is more frustrating than hitting a great drive, placing the approach shot on the green and missing a two-foot par putt and walking away with bogey. Practice, practice, and practice from short ranges. The clock drill is excellent reinforcement. Begin by placing three balls in a line at three, six, and nine feet from the hole similar to the twelve, three, six and nine position on a clock. The goal is to make all twelve in a row. If you miss any putt, then go back to the beginning and start over.

Ladder Drill Improve your putting from long range. Give yourself the opportunity to make short putts inside five feet from the hole. Percentages that you’ll make a putt dramatically decrease the farther away you are from the hole. The ladder drill is designed to improve putting from longer distances. Place a tee in the ground in a line ten feet, 20 feet, 30 feet and 40 feet away. In this drill, you are 82 / Our City Weston / September 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

attempting to control the distance you hit each putt. The ladder drill begins by hitting a putt to the first tee, which is ten feet away. Next, hit a 20-footer, then 30-footer followed by a 40-foot putt. The idea is to get the ball to stop as close to each tee as possible. The next step is to theoretically close the ladder. From the first tee, hit a 30-foot putt, followed by 20-foot putt followed by a ten-foot putt to the final tee. At the conclusion, you have successfully opened and closed the ladder. The drill continues by going through the same sequence from the opposite direction. If the first putts were all uphill, you are now faced with a series of difficult downhill putts. Once you can successfully navigate this drill, your feel on the greens should improve.

Path Drill Many amateurs push or pull the putt off line. This is caused from an in-to-out or out-to-in swing path. The following drill will help develop a consistent path. Find a flat area on the green and place two clubs on the ground wide enough to place the putter head behind the ball. Swing the putter between the two clubs and hit the ball. If the putter hits any of the clubs, you are not swinging the putter down the target line. Make sure the putter head stays low to the ground and follows through. It’s always great to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional and see what tips they have to share and teach to you as well.

ANIMAL HEALTH

Dental Care By Miguel E. Cordova, DV

W

hat You Need to Know Bad breath in pets may be a sign of periodontal disease that could lead to other health problems. Periodontal disease starts when plaque (a bacterial film) coats the tooth. Plaque hardens (calcifies) into tartar, a thick yellow or brown layer on the teeth. Tartar can irritate the gums, creating an environment where bacteria thrive. As the disease progresses, the gums become tender, red, and swollen and the bacteria continue to multiply. Eventually, the inflamed gums pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that trap more bacteria and food particles. The gums bleed, the roots of the teeth may become exposed, teeth may become loose, and your pet may feel pain when eating. If the bacteria enter the bloodstream, they can create problems for organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

Signs of Dental Problems

breath ▸ Bad around the mouth ▸ Sensitivity of appetite ▸ Loss ▸ Yellow or brown deposits on the teeth

inflamed, and withdrawn ▸ Bleeding, gums or missing teeth ▸ Loose Pawing the mouth or face ▸ Difficultyatchewing ▸

What to Do

Your pet needs routine dental care from your veterinarian and you. Annual veterinary checkups are essential for helping your veterinarian monitor your pet’s dental health, but don’t wait for a checkup if you suspect a problem. After an examination, your veterinarian may recommend a dental prophylaxis (tooth cleaning) for your pet. Anesthesia and pain medication are used for dental procedures. If dental disease is severe, your veterinarian will recommend the best treatment, which may include tooth extraction. Pets are never too young to start having their teeth brushed at home; in fact, the younger they are, the better. Slowly and gently introduce your pet to toothbrushing. It should be a bonding experience that is reinforced with praise and rewards. Begin by rubbing your pet’s teeth and gums with soft gauze wrapped around your finger. Gradually switch to using a specially designed pet toothbrush or baby toothbrush with pet toothpaste (do not use toothpaste

for people because it can upset your pet’s stomach). If your pet is most at ease on your lap, keep his or her toothbrush next to the chair where you sit together. Focus on your pet’s gum line, and work up to 30 seconds of brushing for each side of the mouth at least a few times a week. If your pet won’t tolerate brushing, your veterinarian can recommend plaque-preventive products for your pet. There’s no substitute for regular brushing, but feeding dry food can help keep your pet’s teeth and gums in good condition. In addition, special plaque-reducing foods, treats, and toys can help. The Seal of Acceptance from the Veterinary Oral Health Council appears on products that meet defined standards for plaque and tartar control in dogs and cats. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Caring for your pet’s teeth can have several benefits. For example, a few minutes of brushing each week can help give your pet a longer, healthier life. LEGALLY SPEAKING

INCOME DEFINED

I

By Evan H. Baron, Esq.

n a Dissolution of Marriage the couple’s finances are usually the main issue in the case. Finances are considered in determining the division of assets and liabilities (equitable distribution), child support and alimony. In most instances determining a spouse’s income is not very difficult. Tax returns, w-2’s and pay stubs can assist in determining a person’s yearly income. However, not everyone is a salaried employee who gets paid on either a yearly salary or standard 40 hour work week. There are many people who work on commission or have a large part of their income paid in either quarterly or yearly bonuses. So are these bonuses income? How do we determine income when a bonus is not guaranteed or a commissioned sales person cannot predict how his year will be? In determining child support each parent’s income must be considered to calculate the monthly support. It cannot be recalculated each month depending on an individual’s income which may vary based on sales totals or bonuses.

Income is actually defined by Florida Statutes as follows:

▸ ▸ ▸

Salary or wages. Bonuses, commissions, allowances, overtime, tips, and other similar payments. Business income from sources such as self-employment, partnership, close corporations, and independent contracts. "Business income" means gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce income. Disability benefits. All workers' compensation benefits and settlements. Reemployment assistance or unemployment compensation. Pension, retirement, or annuity payments. Social security benefits. Spousal support received from a previous marriage or court ordered in the marriage before the court. Interest and dividends. Rental income, which is gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce the income. Income from royalties, trusts, or estates. Reimbursed expenses or in kind payments to the extent that they reduce living expenses.

Gains derived from dealings in property, unless the gain is nonrecurring.

The above clearly shows that income is not just what a person may bring home each week in a check. Car allowances for instance would be considered reimbursed expenses or in kind payments, which must be considered as income. I am often asked whether overtime (again never guaranteed) is income. The answer is yes and it will be considered when determining child support. Of course if overtime is no longer available because of economic conditions than it should be considered as well. A voluntary reduction in income, such as refusing overtime when it is available, is not permitted and such a reduction will not be considered. In addition, a person cannot voluntarily reduce his/her income by changing jobs and expect to be able to either reduce or increase a child support or alimony obligation. If someone is “underemployed” additional income may be imputed by the courts. Of course, sometimes a reduction in income can occur due to circumstances beyond the individuals control. Once again, if you have any questions I suggest you contact an experienced family law attorney for the answers. ⊲ The law firm of Evan H. SAFETY CORNER

A Safe Ride For All By Chief Todd Draizin

S

afety is the top priority for everyone when riding in a vehicle. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 -13 years old. Using a child safety seat can reduce the risk of death by up to 71 percent; however, more than fifty percent of child car seats are installed or used incorrectly. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue advocates a Safe Ride for everyone. Following some simple safety tips for driver and passenger safety can help parents and caregivers keep themselves and their kids safe in the car. Our roadways are a shared resource and benefit for all people. All drivers must commit to practicing safe driving behaviors to maximize the opportunities to keep everyone safe. Buckle up, every ride, every time! Parents can be good role models by riding safely in a vehicle and ensuring they always wear a properly fitted seat belt. Drivers should always obey posted speed limits, commit to distraction-free driving, and never drive under the influence of alcohol/drugs. To help ensure loose objects do not hurt you in the event of a crash, avoid carrying cargo inside your vehicle unless it is secured or placed in the trunk. As always, remember to never leave a child or pet alone in a vehicle. According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), recent studies show that while older drivers are often among the safest drivers, they are more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash due to greater fragility and decreased mobility. Older drivers can improve their safety by ensuring their vehicles' seats and mirrors are correctly adjusted to fit them. CarFit is an educational program developed by AARP, AAA, and the American Occupational Therapy Association that helps older adults see how well their vehicle fits them. CarFit can teach people about these essential safety adjustments to ensure they are always riding safely. To participate in an on-demand educational workshop and complete the CarFit SelfAssessment Checklist, please visit Car-Fit.org. Wearing seat belts and following the rules of the road are some of the best ways to keep everyone safe in the car and on the road. Ensuring that drivers have the best seat belt fit in their vehicle can help make them feel more comfortable and confident as they drive. Not all child car seats are created equal. In fact, child car seats are manufactured for a childs' specific weight and height. Choosing a car seat that fits your child's size and weight will keep them safe during daily travels. Infants or toddlers, generally considered from birth to ages 2-4, should be buckled in a rear-facing car seat, in the back seat, until they reach the maximum weight and height limits of their car seat. Be sure you know how to install your car seat properly; refer to the manual and labels on the car seat for assistance. If you need additional assistance, seek the help of a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. To schedule an appointment with a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician in Weston, please call Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue at 954-389-2015. Airbags can save your life. However, if a passenger is too small, airbags can become dangerous. Children under the age of 13 should always ride in the back seat. Older children that do not need a child car seat or booster seat should always wear the seat belt installed by the car manufacturer.

For more information, please contact District Chief Todd Draizin at Fire Station 81 at 954-389-2092 or by email at Todd_Draizin@Sheriff.org.

In celebration of women who inspire us, Our City profiles these successful women to motivate the next generation of leaders in our community.

Lynne Kunins

FLIPANY Founder, President, CEO (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth)

HER STORY

Lynne Kunins discovered her true calling when she volunteered to work with South Florida kids of parents that were serving time in prison. She led the kids through after-school team-building games, fun routines for building physical skills, and provided hands on experiences with new and healthy foods. She felt such a strong connection to these kids that she promised to find a way to sustain and expand the program. Lynne founded FLIPANY in 2005 and started writing grant proposals. It was a struggle in the early days, working alone and learning the hard way. Lynne’s first hire was a registered dietitian — a commitment to ensuring program quality — and in the first year of operations she hosted the first Annual FLIPANY Fun Run, became the designated Florida Partner for Cooking Matters food skills education programs, and managed an operating budget of $106,000. Sixteen years later, FLIPANY operates a budget of over 6 million dollars with a team of 26 full time staff and management team. During Covid-19 pandemic, FLIPANY retooled its programming to distribute healthy meals to kids and adults and to provide virtual cooking classes, fitness classes, and nutrition education activities.

96 / Our City Weston / September 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

By the end of 2020, FLIPANY had partnered with over 250 South Florida meal distribution locations to deliver over 2 million healthy meals.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN?

Lynne’s number one tip for aspiring women in business would be to work on something you want to wake up to everyday and make a difference; make mistakes, learn, grow, and partner with people who want to see you and your business succeed. Collaborations are very important because you learn from other businesses and that’s exactly what Lynne did since day one; asked questions and sometimes for forgiveness but never stopped building relationships with her community.

CREATING HEALTHY LIVES

Lynne has been through all walks of life but through her tenacity and resilience she has been able to build a place in South Florida that brings access to health and wellness in areas that can’t get access easily. She believes that FLIPANY’s work is not done until everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy life.

CELEBRATING WOMEN

Angie Bolanos

Occupational Therapist & Health Coach

HER STORY

Angie is the founder and owner of Bolanos Associates. Her firm provides Physical and Occupational Therapy to patients at three locations, plus two satellite locations. While much of her time is spent managing and developing her business, she still takes time to work personally with patients. Angie specializes in treating the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. She recently became a Certified Health Coach.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN?

I encourage girls or young women with a dream of owning a business to not allow society set limitations or expectations to hold them back. As women, we are capable of managing a business and having a family, and managing a household if that is what you desire.

HOW HAS BEING A WOMAN AFFECTED YOUR CAREER?

Being a women business owner has had its challenges, but I do not feel it has negatively affected my career. When I openned Bolanos Associates, people were surprised that I was the owner because I was a woman. Many times they asked if this was a family business, meaning my father or a husband. My biggest challenge as a woman business owner was feeling that I had to prove myself to everyone. Establishing meetings, accounts, managing staff, various locations, and balancing my life with my family and son were challenging. Being a business owner is very demanding and requires a lot of hours of work and dedication. My goal was to establish a business recognized in the community for providing excellent service to our patients. However, I am a mom, and when I started my business, I was a single mom with a 5-year-old son. My challenge was working long hours when my son was young. I had to juggle my business with baseball activities, school work, and extra school activities all parents want to attend.
