“The Uncensored Message that My Wife Asked Me Not to Write”
At first, my wife asked me not to write this. We had a big discussion about it. Finally, she understood what I was trying to do and helped me write you this letter.
Here’s the thing: In my office, most of the people who come in to see me tell me they’ve “tried everything.” They’ve had “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to mask symptoms temporarily. That’s not what most people are looking for. Health, or the lack of it, very often has simple causes and reasonable corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. Before I tell you more, let me share a little about myself.
Growing up in North Carolina, I was a young child, and I loved sports. But then it happens... I develop a childhood condition known as ‘ADHD.’ I am hyper. I can’t focus or learn at the same pace as my peers. Sometimes, I even wet the bed at night. I’m embarrassed and falling behind in school, so the doctors give me a pill to take every day. It suppresses my appetite and hinders my ability to participate in sports. I may need this medication for the rest of my life. But listen to this! My grandmother convinced my mom to try a new doctor. They perform an exam, take some films, and then ‘adjust’ my spine. The adjustment doesn’t hurt; it actually feels good. I get relief, and after the first adjustment, I stop wetting the bed. With continued care, my ability to concentrate on my schoolwork becomes much easier. Oh, did I mention that this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic care works fantastic for me. I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office that I eventually go to chiropractic school, and that’s how it happened!
Back to what my wife (at first) didn’t want me to write. It’s that chiropractic is one of the biggest “secrets” in health care. In fact, only about 10% of people have been to a chiropractor, and many of the rest could be helped - if they only knew the true story. So, I often feel like shouting it from the mountaintop! Is that “professional?” Well, maybe it is, or maybe it’s not. But I’ve decided people
should know. For the last twelve years, people from Cooper City and the surrounding areas have come to see me for childhood conditions. They’ve also come to me with their Headaches, Migraines, Vertigo/dizziness, Neck pain, Shoulder/ arm pain, Sciatica, Numbness in limbs, and Digestive problems, to name a few.
Here’s What Some of Your Neighbors Had to Say
“I don’t know how anyone at the office could’ve made me feel more welcome. From the time I walked into the office, I was treated like family. The explanations were in such great detail that anyone could understand. I appreciate the care and help I received here. I look forward to going back.”
– A.C., SUNRISE, FL
“I have been going to Dr. Granger’s practice for over two years. As an avid golfer (I play every day, weather permitting), I can attest to the efficiency of his method and treatment. He has fixed my neck and back, which have plagued me for many years, and has kept me pain-free since. As an added bonus, I added a few yards to my swing. For you neck and back sufferers, he is the man to go to.”
– R.E., WESTON, FL
Several times daily, patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. The truth is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. I perform a specific spinal adjustment called NU-CCA, which involves no twisting, popping, or cracking. It removes nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. Of course, every-
one responds differently to care, but we get terrific results. It’s as simple as that!
Exciting Offer!
Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your problem and not just cover it up with drugs. Be among the first 20 people to call and schedule a new patient exam (by September 13th, 2024), you’ll receive that entire exam for $76!
That’s with digital X-rays, a complete spinal exam, laser posture analysis, and no hidden fees. But call right away because we expect to be flooded with calls, as this exam normally costs $447. Again, there are only 20 of these slots, so don’t miss out!
Excellent Care at a Great Price
Please make no mistake about the quality of care you will receive due to this special offer. I’m a Cum Laude graduate of Palmer College, the only NUCCA doctor in South Broward, and 1 of 11 in the state. I’ve been entrusted to care for everyone from tiny babies to pro athletes you may know. I’ve been caring for your neighbors in South Florida for the past twelve years. I am offering this low exam fee to help more people who need care.
My assistants Claire & Rosy are really wonderful people. Our office provides a friendly, welcoming environment. We are passionate about serving people, so you’ll feel right at home. We provide outstanding service at an exceptional rate. We can help you!
THRIVE SPINAL CARE , located in Countryside Shops at 5560 S. Flamingo Road, Cooper City. Call Claire, Rosy, or myself today for an appointment at 954533-1977.
Thank you, and God bless.
Jason Granger, D.C.
P.S. Can you imagine not having to wait at a doctor’s office? Well, your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why we have a no-wait policy. You are guaranteed be seen within minutes of your appointment! P.P.S. All people respond differently to care. We never promise a cure, but we do promise to do our best!

Transform Your Space: Simplified Window Solutions!
Shade Above Window Fashions provides a unique experience for consumers shopping for window coverings. Their interactive showroom features more than 100 different shades and blinds. Andrew Abramson, president of A Shade Above Window Fashions, and his family have been in the window covering industry for more than 50 years. This year, A Shade Above is celebrating its 40th anniversary in South Florida. Andrew recently answered some questions about his business and what differentiates it from the competition.
Please describe your showroom.
If you are in the market for shades or blinds, shopping in our showroom is an experience. When my father, Bruce, started A Shade Above in 1984, he had a vision of a showroom-based shades and blinds company where customers could see full-size, interactive displays of all the latest products on the market.
In 2000, our Davie showroom was selected as the nation’s first Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Gallery. Last year, we did a complete showroom renovation. Our Hunter Douglas Gallery 3.0 is state-of-the-art, and we also showcase other top national and international brands. We’ve treated windows in thousands of
Pembroke Pines homes, and over multiple generations. Some of our newer customers are the children or even grandchildren of our past customers.
What products do you offer?
We offer many of the top products on the market, including plantation shutters, roller and outdoor shades, zebra, banded and Roman shades, horizontal and vertical blinds, drapery, Luminette, Silhouette, Pirouette and PowerView, and Somfy automation. Most of our products can be motorized and programmed to work with a voice assistant like Alexa. You can even pre-set your shades to open and close at specific times of day.
What products are currently trending in the window covering industry?
Plantation shutters remain one of our most popular products. They are a timeless window treatment that is always in style. If you are looking for a decorative statement, plantation shutters provide trim work around your window, including a new contemporary frame. Depending on which shutter you choose, they can complement any decor. Our showroom features a wide variety of shutters, including some modern wide-louvered shutters.
What other trends can customers spot in your showroom?
If you are looking for a soft, contemporary look, banded shades, also known as zebra shades, are an ideal product that can work in any room. Banded shades alternate sheer and solid fabric, allowing a single shade to transition from open to close. It’s a perfect shade for those who want a view but also light control and privacy. It’s one of the most popular products we’ve ever carried. We are currently offering a special for our 40th anniversary with a free upgrade to cordless Banded shades, which normally cost an extra $100 per shade.
Do you have room darkening products?
We’re always adding to our collection of blackout shades and we have interactive displays that showcase different degrees of darkness in more than 20 products. We offer stylish shades that provide nearly total blackout in bedrooms and media rooms. Customers love our Duo Shades — during the day a transparent shade gives you a view of the outside while maintaining privacy and keeping out the heat. At night the blackout shade keeps the room private while maintaining darkness when the sun rises. It’s similar to what you’d find in many contemporary hotel rooms.
Are your shades energy efficient?
All of our shades and blinds will help reduce heat. But there’s nothing more energy efficient than our honeycomb shades. Many of these shades qualify for a new federal tax rebate and you can receive up to $1,200 back after purchase.
Andrew Abramson, President
What’s available for patios and other outdoor spaces?
Our patio sun shades allow you to relax in your yard without melting in the sun. These shades can be operated manually with a cable guide for wind resistance, or the shades can be motorized on a track. In addition to reducing the heat, our outdoor sun shades keep much of the rain off your patio. We also have retractable patio screens that look like traditional mesh screens on a screened-in patio – they keep out the bugs but can also be raised when you want to let in the open air and hide your screens.
With so many choices, how do you help customers make a decision?
When customers visit our showroom, they receive a tour of the newest shades and blinds available today. We recognize that it can be difficult to make decisions from small samples. That’s why our business model is special. Our full-size displays are available for the customer to view and operate as they will appear in their home. Our employees have years of experience in the window covering industry, so they can answer personalized questions that will help customers make the best decisions tailored to their needs.
What’s the best way for customers to contact you?
To schedule a showroom consultation, visit our website AShadeAboveFlorida.com or call or text us at 954-434-4774. Our full-service package includes professional measuring, installation and an in-home service warranty. We also offer self-service packages for do-it-yourselfers.

Adopt a Pet Transform Their Life & Yours
Owning a pet can bring a wealth of benefits to your life, both physically and mentally. Research consistently shows that pet ownership can improve cardiovascular health, particularly of dogs and cats. Pet owners often have lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, reducing heart disease risk. Studies have also highlighted that dog owners tend to live longer after a heart attack than those without pets.
Beyond physical health, pets play a vital role in mental well-being. The companionship they offer helps alleviate feelings of loneliness and anxiety. Simply petting a dog or cat can trigger the release of endorphins, lifting your mood and reducing stress. This is especially important for older adults, as pets can provide a sense of purpose and structure, helping maintain cognitive function and mental sharpness.
Pets are also catalysts for a more active lifestyle. Dog owners, in particular, tend to lead more active lives through regular walks and playtime, which in turn contributes to better overall health. For children, growing up with pets has been linked to stronger immune systems and a reduced risk of developing allergies, owing to early exposure to a variety of microbes.
However, despite these numerous benefits, many animals still need a loving home. In the United States alone, an estimated 670,000 dogs are euthanized each year due to overcrowded shelters. Globally, millions of pets face similar fates.
Adopting a pet is not just a life-changing decision for you, but also a life-saving one for them. By opening your home to a pet, you’re not only gaining a loyal companion but also giving an animal the chance for a happy, fulfilling life. Consider adoption today—for their sake, and for yours. A CENTURY OF RESILIENCE CELEBRATING LOU MILLER'S 100 YEARS
Lou Miller, a man who has lived through a century of extraordinary events, was honored for his 100th birthday at The Palace at Weston. The celebration, held on August 15th, featured a special proclamation from City of Weston Mayor Margaret Brown, recognizing Miller's remarkable life and enduring contributions to his community.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, in August 1924, Lou Miller’s life was a testament to resilience, service, and a passion for learning. After losing his father at a young age, Lou found solace in music and literature, interests that shaped his future. At 18, he joined the army and served in the General 98th Hospital during World War II, where he played a critical role in treating wounded soldiers on D-Day. His love for music also followed him to the battlefields, where he performed with the Army orchestra in some of Europe’s most renowned music halls.
After the war, Miller returned to New York and used the GI Bill to attend the Brooklyn Academy of Music, a decision that fueled his lifelong love for the arts. Transitioning into the automobile industry, Lou established his own Ford agency, showcasing the same determination and drive that had defined his military service.
Lou’s life was not without its share of hardships, including the loss of close family members. However, his positive outlook and thirst for knowledge never wavered. Even at 100 years old, he remains active, engaging in activities like reading, solving puzzles, and attending lectures. Lou Miller’s life serves as a powerful reminder that age is just a number and that a spirit of curiosity and resilience can carry us through even the most challenging of times.

Conducting Her Dreams Shelbie Rassler’s Musical Homecoming
Weston native Shelbie Rassler is set to return to her hometown on September 6th as the conductor of the orchestra for the highly anticipated "Spider-Man™: Across the Spider-Verse" extravaganza at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. This spectacle will feature the movie showcased on a colossal HD screen, complemented by a diverse ensemble of musicians and instrumentalists performing the film’s iconic score and soundtrack live.
Rassler has soared to national and global acclaim through her extraordinary musical compositions and impactful social media initiatives. Her journey from crafting musical instruments at the tender age of eight in her Weston home to commanding orchestras at prestigious venues worldwide is inspiring.
Rassler's musical journey began early. At Falcon Cove Middle School, she was the youngest member of the Falcon Cove Jazz Band and later won the “Falcon Cove’s Got Talent” competition. By the time she reached Cypress Bay High School, her talents blossomed. As part of the school's Wind Ensemble and Marching Band, Rassler played first chair saxophone and became the Drum Major during her junior and senior years. A highlight of her high school career was composing a piece for the Wind Ensemble, which was performed and recorded during their end-of-year concert helping her to secure college auditions. Shelbie was the recipient of the Weston Music Society Scholarship, as well as, the Music Composition winner of the National League of Pen Woman in her senior year of high school.
Rassler’s education continued at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition
in 2020. Here, she studied under renowned composer Jonathan Bailey Holland. She then attended The Julliard School, where she completed her Master’s in Music Composition in 2022, learning from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Corigliano.
Rassler first captivated the world with her production of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “What the World Needs Now,” a project that earned her a CBS Sunday Morning Award and featured her in discussions with Bacharach on CNN’s "The Fourth in America" Primetime Special. This viral video was a heartfelt response to the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, showcasing her ability to blend music with a strong social message. Her compositions have been performed in iconic venues such as The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and His Majesty’s Theatre in the West End, affirming her status as a respected figure in the classical music world. As an arranger for Concertize and Candlelight Concerts, Rassler brings classical music to millions in over a hundred cities worldwide. Her versatility is evident in her work with the Club Quarantine Concert Series, where she orchestrates music for some of the biggest names in hip-hop and R&B.
Rassler's collaborations span an array of distinguished artists and ensembles, including Yo-Yo Ma, Anthony McGill, and the New World Symphony Orchestra. Her contributions to the musical community have been recognized with the Robert Sherman Music Education and Community Outreach Award, highlighting her dedication to using her talent for the greater good.
As a composer, Rassler has worked on the music teams for various Netflix shows and penned scores for commercials and documentaries. Her original musical, "Voices," co-written with Harley Seger, was a New York Musical Festival Finalist, and she is currently orchestrating two new musicals. Her film score for "Titan," now streaming on Amazon Prime, was selected for the CMF Cannes Film Festival, and her work on "Wright of Passage" premiered at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
Rassler’s upcoming performance promises to be a spectacular event. Her return to South Florida is more than a homecoming; it's a celebration of her achievements. Her story is a shining example for young musicians everywhere, illustrating the heights that can be reached with passion, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence.

Honoring Aden Perry SW Ranches Installs Rescue Rings
Slightly more than a two years ago, an evening stroll for a mother and her son took a tragic turn when a car lost control and veered into a lake. The incident left Sarah Perry's world shattered. Without delay, her son Aden sprang into action, leaping into the water to aid the driver. Tragically, neither the driver nor Aden resurfaced, forever altering the course of Sarah's life.
“There was nothing there that night that we could have used, and I always think that if there was a ring there, then perhaps my son would be here today,” Perry reflected.
Driven by her loss, Sarah has transformed her grief into purpose through the Aden Perry Hero Ring Initiative. The initiative is committed to placing life-saving rings around various bodies of water across South Florida. The objective is two-fold: to pay homage to Aden's memory and to raise community awareness, all while
equipping people with a tool that could rescue lives.
On Friday, August 9, 2024, the Town of Southwest Ranches, in collaboration with the Aden Perry Life Ring Initiative, hosted a poignant Life Ring Installation Ceremony. The event took place at the water body located at the intersection of Hancock Road and Griffin Road, where community members gathered to honor the memory of Aden Perry.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a crucial safety initiative, introducing Coast Guard-regulated rescue rings across the town. These life rings are designed to provide immediate assistance during water emergencies, allowing bystanders to help without risking their own lives. The event not only served as a tribute to Aden's bravery but also as a significant step towards enhancing water safety within the community.
Broward County has reached a remarkable milestone, earning an "A" school rating—a clear reflection of the collective efforts of the entire community. This success underscores the county’s dedication to education and promises a brighter future for its residents, with enhanced real estate values and a robust local economy.
The leadership of the recently retired Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata was pivotal in achieving this success. Together with Deputy Superintendent Hepburn, now the new superintendent, they laid the groundwork for an environment where both students and educators could excel
CELEBR ATING BROWARD COUNTY’S ACHIEVEMENT “A” School Rating Success A+
through their strategic vision and hard work.
In light of this accomplishment, Mr. Hepburn, now the Superintendent, praised the unwavering commitment of the dedicated staff who made this achievement possible. “This is a proud moment for all of us,” Hepburn remarked.
“Amazing work by our staff, amazing work by our teachers, our principals, our custodians, our bus drivers, our cafeteria workers, our clerical staff. I can go on and on and on,” he said.
He also thanked the nearly 260,000 students who attend the district’s
public schools every day.
“Thanks to our students and our families. They really took charge of their kids’ education. Our students took charge of their own education,” said Hepburn.
Hepburn also highlighted the broader implications of this achievement, particularly its impact on the community at large. He pointed out that a high-performing school district significantly boosts real estate values and attracts families seeking quality education and a vibrant community.
“This 'A' rating enhances Broward County’s appeal as a destination for families looking for a great place to raise their children. It’s a
testament to our collective efforts and a foundation for future growth,” Hepburn noted.
Broward County’s success story is one of community collaboration, where teachers, parents, and local leaders unite to prioritize education. This joint effort has positioned the county as a leader in educational excellence, setting a benchmark for other districts.
As Broward County basks in this achievement, the community looks forward to continued progress under Hepburn’s leadership, ensuring that the county remains a great place to live, learn, and grow.
Four Broward County Teens Selected as Bank of America Student Leaders
Bank of America recently announced four Broward County high school students were selected as Student Leaders, an eight-week paid summer internship connecting students to employment, skills development and service. These community-minded students gained practical work and leadership experience. They received financial education coaching through Bank of America’s Better Money Habits curriculum while
working with local nonprofits and earning competitive wages.
“The exceptional teens selected for the Student Leaders program will not only gain practical work and life experience, but the community in turn will gain help from local nonprofits and a diverse pipeline of talent as these young adults enter the local workforce,” said Lori Chevy, president, Bank of America Fort Lauderdale
The Broward County Student Leaders participated in community service and leadership activities with the YMCA of South Florida.
The class of 2024 Broward County Bank of America Student Leaders are:
Laura Morejon Rodriguez is a senior at Piper High School in Fort Lauderdale whose passion for addressing alarming rates of overdoses in her community
inspired her to form Drug Abuse Prevention (DAP) South Florida, a non-profit dedicated to helping those struggling with addiction. Through this organization, Laura fundraised and volunteered at centers to provide guidance and resources to help transform lives.
Eleasha Augustin is a recent graduate from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and served as president of Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders, a peerto-peer mentoring program that serves youth who are at-risk for not graduating. She worked with mentees on homework, home situations and more.
Sebastian Garcia Gutierrez is a senior at the College Academy at Broward College led his student government in collecting food and supply bags for the homeless, while also taking steps to honor local veterans.
As a leader within the Political Science Club, Sebastian aided
students in understanding their civic duties by holding events with local judges and politicians, as well as coordinating voter registration drives.
Vyom Mishra is a senior at the Broward Campus of American Heritage Schools who founded a nonprofit called Skip the Jargon to promote financial literacy and educate underserved communities on the value of investing. Over 2,000 high school students around the world have participated by attending guest lectures and contributing content that helps share important financial education materials.
During the program, the Student Leaders traveled to Washington, D.C. for a weeklong, all-expenses-paid, national leadership summit to learn how nonprofits, governments and businesses collaborate to meet local needs.

Weston Music Society's 'Summer Sounds' Delights with American Songbook Classics
On a warm Thursday evening, close to 150 of our residents enjoyed a dazzling America Songbook concert. “Summer Sounds”, presented by the Weston Music Society, and featuring the South Florida Symphony Trio and a vocalist, received enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Toby Feuer, Vice President of Events, said, “Our thanks to Executive Director David Pasternack and his staff at Temple Dor Dorim for providing wonderful accommodations to the Weston Music Society “Summer Sounds” evening. Kudos to the South Florida Symphony vocalist and trio for an enchanting night of music. Our special thanks to all who attended.”
The musicians had stellar bios. Dr. Lisanne Lyons, an award-winning jazz vocalist, is the founder and director of the Florida International University award-winning jazz vocal program. She has performed with national orchestras and big bands across the country. Eero Turunen is a piano and keyboard player who toured with Joss Stone and recorded with Barry Gibb. Alex Hernandez is a Grammy-nominated bassist, composer, band leader and educator who has shared his talents with, among others, Wynton Marsalis and Savion Glover. He has toured the world with international acts. Ludwig Alfonso on the drums has toured with Spyro Gyra and many others and has been a part of many Grammy-nominated recordings.
It was tempting for the audience to sing along to such favorites as “That Old Black Magic”, “Misty”, “All of Me” and “In the Still of the Night”. Their rendition of “Route 66” featured solos by each of the musicians and brought the house down.
A special treat of the evening was the presentation of the Weston Music Society Platinum Circle Award to Dr. Kamala Anandam. It recognizes those who have supported the arts in our community. Many of her colleagues from Weston Friends, Rotary, the Arts Council of Greater Weston, and the
Weston Branch of the American Association of University Women WHO ELSE She is a shining example of a dedicated volunteer. She moved to Weston in 1985 and established the Weston Branch of the American Association of University Women. She was inducted into both the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame and Senior Hall of Fame. She received the Achievement Award from the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. Born in India, throughout her living with her family in the United States, she was active in the colleges where she taught and where she innovated new departments. As one college president said, “If only we could clone Kamala”.
Lou Marett, WMS President, said, “The WMS is thrilled that this concert was so warmly received. Our mission includes bringing professional musicians into the elementary schools, providing scholarships to local graduates who pursue studies in music-related fields as well as providing Weston with fine concerts of all genres."
NAVIGATING THE SOUTH FLORIDA REAL ESTATE MARKET
KEY INSIGHTS & TIPS FOR SUCCESS
By Rose Sklar
The South Florida real estate market is experiencing a notable shift, creating a dynamic environment that presents new opportunities for buyers and sellers. With mortgage rates dipping to their lowest levels since February 2024, this market change is expected to spark increased interest among prospective buyers who have hesitated to move. Whether you’re looking to buy or sell, understanding these market trends and taking proactive steps can make all the difference. Here's a closer look at the current landscape and practical advice to help you navigate it effectively.
Recent Market Trends
Lower Mortgage Rates: The recent drop in mortgage rates is a game-changer for the real estate market. Lower rates translate into more affordable borrowing, which can motivate potential buyers to enter the market sooner rather than later. If you’ve been contemplating purchasing a home, this could be the ideal time to take advantage of these favorable conditions.
Increased Inventory: South Florida has a higher inventory of homes than last year, offering more choices for buyers. However, this also means heightened competition for sellers. If your home has been on the market without generating offers, enhancing its appeal is crucial to stand out in this more competitive landscape.
Strategies for Sellers: Enhancing Your Home’s Appeal
If your property isn’t attracting the interest you expected, it may be time to reassess and implement strategic changes. Here are some key areas to focus on:
1. Assess Your Home’s Condition: Thoroughly evaluate your property’s condition. Is your home well-maintained and visually appealing? Simple issues like overgrown landscaping, dirty windows, or general wear and tear can turn potential buyers away. A well-cared-for home is far more likely to attract serious offers.
2. Boost Curb Appeal: First impressions matter greatly in real estate. If your home is vacant, it might lack the inviting warmth that helps buyers imagine themselves living there. Consider investing in professional cleaning and staging to showcase your home in its best light. A clean, well-staged property can significantly increase buyer interest.
3. Optimize Your Online Presence: In today’s digital age, high-quality photos are essential for capturing buyers’ attention. Review how your home is presented online— are the photos professional and flattering? If not, updating them can make a substantial difference in attracting potential buyers.
4. Reevaluate Your Pricing Strategy: If your home has been listed at the same price for an extended period, it may be time to consider a price adjustment. Homes that linger on the market can become stale, causing buyers to question whether something is wrong with the property. A fresh pricing strategy can help re-energize interest in your listing.
5. Offer Buyer Incentives: To make your property more appealing, consider
offering incentives, such as a buy-down credit to help buyers with their mortgage payments during the first year. This can be an attractive option that sets your home apart from others on the market.
6. Act on Feedback: Pay close attention to feedback from your Realtor and prospective buyers. If there are recurring comments about certain aspects of your home—like outdated features or minor repairs needed—address these issues promptly. Small updates, such as replacing damaged fascia, refreshing the pool deck, painting the front door, or updating hardware, can significantly impact.
7. Invest in Minor Renovations: Consider minor renovations if feedback indicates a need for more substantial updates. New flooring, fresh paint, and other small improvements can greatly enhance your home’s appeal and value, making it more attractive to buyers.
Making the Most of the Current Market
The South Florida real estate market is evolving, with lower mortgage rates and increased inventory shaping the current landscape. For sellers, taking proactive steps to enhance your home’s condition, presentation, and pricing strategy is crucial to attracting buyers and securing a successful sale.
If you’re navigating the real estate market in South Florida, now is the time to ensure your property stands out. By addressing these key areas, you’ll be better positioned to achieve a favorable outcome in today’s competitive environment.

TEMPLE DOR DORIM WELCOMES NEW RABBI
Change is in the air at Temple Dor Dorim (TDD). The Weston Reform Temple recently welcomed Rabbi Bryan Zive as its new Senior Rabbi. The rabbi, his wife, Melyssa, and son Hayden recently moved to Weston and are already integrating into the melting pot the community is known for.
Rabbi Zive plans to lead the temple for years to come with an innovative blend of enthusiasm, progressive values, and a deep dedication to the TDD community.
“After serving as a Rabbi in Irvine, California, I decided to pursue a Senior Rabbi position, Said Rabbi Zive, “I was fortunate enough to meet with several Temples across the country, but after meeting with Temple Dor Dorim, I said to myself, ‘these are the people I want to ‘do life’ with. The diversity and commitment of the people of Weston is magnetic.”
Rabbi Bryan Zive earned his M.A. in Hebrew Letters in 2017 and was ordained in 2019 at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles. He has served in various roles, including as Student Rabbi in Castro Valley, CA, Rabbinic Intern in Los Angeles, and Associate Rabbi and Director of Congregational Music in Irvine, CA. He previously held cantorial positions in Columbus, OH, and Denver, CO.
The Road Ahead for Temple Dor Dorim
Temple Dor Dorim is a vibrant, warm, welcoming, multi-generational Temple family. It is open to all who wish to be part of a temple that welcomes people of all backgrounds. Rabbi Zive hopes to continue the temple’s role in the Weston community and expand its multi-generational reach.
“My goal for Temple Dor Dorim is to be the place for Jewish life in South Florida,” Rabbi Zive commented, “While the religious aspect is most important, it is just one aspect of the Jewish experience. TDD is a family. It is a home for our members, and we are all better off at home.”
Music at Temple
In addition to his Rabbinate, Rabbi Zive is an accomplished Jewish composer and musician. He is entirely self-taught and
includes music as a centerpiece of his ministry. Expect to hear his powerful and beautiful singing voice and guitar playing in most aspects of Temple life, his meaningful and motivational sermons and teachings during services and classes and to be greeted with a smile and warm welcome. He has released two full-length albums of Contemporary Jewish music with his band, Kol Echad (The One Voice Band). His song “Rock and Redeemer” was featured on Transcontinental Music’s “Ruach 5769” album as one of Contemporary Judaism’s top songs.
BranchOut Faith
Rabbi Zive founded BranchOut Faith (www.branchoutfaith.com), the world’s first virtual platform designed to engage humanity with in-demand and on-demand mental wellness for anyone to grow in their faith. It offers two separate platforms, BranchOut Judaism and BranchOut Christianity. BranchOut Faith’s Mental Wellness Branch offers a more comfortable, meaningful, spiritual, and holistic experience than other mental health and therapy sites. Jewish and Christian clergy (Rabbis, Cantors, and Pastors) ordained from well-respected seminaries, accredited faith Educators with postgraduate degrees, and licensed Spiritual Directors are available to meet with subscribers virtually on their own schedule.
Looking Toward the Future
“We want to welcome as many people as possible to our temple family,” commented Rabbi Zive, “Anyone and everyone is invited to the High Holidays this year for Free! When I think about what we have at Temple Dor Dorim, I am reminded of the words of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, ‘the old shall be made new again, and the new shall be made holy.’ That is what I want for this temple and the South Florida Jewish community.”

POSH HIGH TEA AND PROSECCO BENEFITING WOMEN IN DISTRESS
It’s kick-off time for the fourth annual POSH High Tea and Prosecco benefiting Women in Distress! This event was established four years ago when Lindsay Malpica-Bey of Weston was told that 75% of the organization's donations come from third-party events, and just coming out of COVID, they were in need more than ever.
This nonprofit organization is dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence. It provides a range of services, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, advocacy, counseling, therapy, and educational programs.
Women In Distress’ mission is to stop domestic violence abuse for everyone through intervention, education, and advocacy.
As the president of the new Rotary Club of Weston Royal Palm, co-founder of Be Local Weston, and Principal Real Estate advisor at Posh Homes Group Compass, LLC, Lindsay had the community resources to pull this event together in just three short months. The success
of the event is a testament to the Weston community's spirit of giving.
Local businesses donated generously, Weston DJ Jason Bank kept the party alive, City Commissioner Chris Eddy offered to purchase tickets for those in need, and City Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie, along with BSO, took time out of their busy schedules to support the cause. Everyone who attended that day knew they were part of something truly special.
Looking back at last year, this event raised an impressive $30,000, making it the third-largest Women in Distress fundraiser. From the inspiring speakers to the generous vendors who donate and set up for guests to kick start their holiday shopping, to the flowing prosecco and delicious desserts from local Weston bakeries and restaurants, this has become a highly anticipated afternoon in the community.
You will laugh, you will cry, you will network, mingle with your neighbors, and most importantly, you will make a significant difference in the lives of those
affected by domestic violence. This is an afternoon that will stay with you, right here in Weston.
High Tea & Prosecco will take place at The Club at Weston Hills on November 22, 2024 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. To learn more, call 954-684-6686.

The power of perseverance
By Ivis Mateos
Empowerment is a word we are hearing more often and is quickly making its way into classrooms around the world. Empowerment is an essential ingredient in forming strong, confident children who are able to fully participate in the developmental process. In education, empowerment means handing over the decision-making to the child, therefore, allowing them to become in control of their own growth and learning. In my years in the classroom, I have come to understand that when working with children, social-emotional education is just as important as their cognitive development. The world we live in gains complexity every day. Teaching children how to find their voice and use their interests and aspirations for learning gives them confidence in their own abilities. When a child feels confident, they are more likely to try new things, be open and adaptable to change, and become
more independent in their day-to-day life.
As educators, it is our job to expose children to real-life situations. Children who encompass this awareness can gain power over their own lives. In the classroom, there are several ways we can empower children to learn by setting aside our preconceived notions about what or how the child should learn and instead understand that each child learns differently. This can be done by creating lessons that are more open-ended and asking guiding questions instead of questions which only have a “right” or “wrong” answer. We need to empower children by allowing them to fail and teaching them the meaning of resilience and the power of perseverance.
A teacher’s role in empowerment goes further than the lessons being taught. Essentially a teacher’s role is to be a facilitator throughout the learning process. Tony Wagner and Ted Dintersmith (2015) have suggested, "The purpose of education is to engage students with their passions and

METAL DETECTORS ROLLED OUT AT BCPS HIGH SCHOOLS
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) experienced some growing pains after metal detectors were installed at BCPS high schools for the 2024 school year. Students and visitors entering BCPS high schools must pass through metal detectors monitored by security personnel and school staff. The program's launch on the first day of school led to TSA-like lines and anxious teens. Reports from local schools suggest some of the challenges have been mitigated.
The metal detector initiative is part of a broader system-wide security initiative implemented by the county’s revamped school board.
School Entry Process
Students can carry their backpacks or bags and will not need to empty pockets or remove shoes, cellphones, keys, metal on clothes, or belts, as those items will not alert the system. Some items will result in an alert and must be placed on adjacent tables to be screened by security staff. These include laptops, large eyeglass cases, musical instruments, umbrellas, and 3-ring binders. Once students are cleared for entry, these items can
be collected.
Students who alert the system when passing through the metal detectors will be screened separately. School staff will be available to support them during this process. Special accommodations will be available for students with disabilities. Parents and guardians should contact the school’s administration for details.
Questionable Impact on Safety
Research on the use of metal detectors in U.S. high schools reveals mixed findings regarding their effectiveness and impact on school safety and student well-being.
Metal detectors can indeed help confiscate weapons, thereby potentially reducing the immediate risk of violence. For instance, in New York City schools, a significant number of weapons, including firearms, stun guns, and knives , have been confiscated using metal detectors. However, according to a RAND Corporation analysis, metal detectors alone do not guarantee reduced violence or threats.
The implementation of metal detectors can affect students' perceptions of safety. Some studies indicate that
metal detectors might contribute to a heightened sense of fear and a feeling of being criminalized among students. This is particularly pronounced in urban schools, although the negative impact on students' sense of safety is somewhat less than in suburban or rural schools (IES.gov)
A study from the Education Trust suggests constant exposure to security measures like metal detectors may contribute to an environment of distrust and anxiety. This can potentially undermine the relationship between students and school staff, negatively impacting the overall school climate.
The Education Trust argues that resources might be better allocated towards other safety measures and supportive services that foster a positive school environment. These include improved mental health services, equitable discipline policies, and enhanced teacher-student relationships.

THE MEANING OF SERVICE
By Sheriff Gregory Tony
In early 2020, while driving home, I came across a car that failed to move after the traffic light turned green. Despite the honking of other drivers and myself, the vehicle remained stationary. Recognizing a potential emergency, I ac ted quickly.
Inside the car, I found the driver slumped over, unresponsive and without a pulse. Without hesitation, I pulled him from the vehicle and performed CPR until his vital signs returned. Thanks to the prompt arrival of emergency medical services, the man was transported to a local hospital and eventually made a full recovery.
Though my actions were later acknowledged by the media and my colleagues at the Broward Sheriff's
Office (BSO), my motivation was never about recognition. What truly mattered was being there when it counted and doing everything possible to help someone in need. This selfless approach to public service is what I believe should guide all our actions as first responders.
This experience epitomizes my personal ethos: Service Equals Reward. For decades, this principle has shaped every decision I've made and has become the guiding motto at BSO. Service Equals Reward emphasizes the intrinsic value of public service, focusing on the positive impact we make on the people we safeguard rather than on material gains.
Every team member at BSO plays a crucial role in serving our community. From the deputies and firefighters on the front lines to the administrative
staff working behind the scenes, each person's contribution is vital. Our collective efforts ensure the safety and well-being of those we protect. Our true reward comes from being leaders in public safety, dedicating ourselves to the greater good, and making a lasting impact on our community for the next 100 years.
As sheriff, I will continue to lead with this mindset. At BSO, service is not just a job but a way of life— a commitment to always do what is right. Our service, actions and contributions to the community are the true measures of our success. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels safe, valued and supported.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR PARENTS
By Dr. Katya Pizarro, Founder, ESL & Higher Education
The transition to a new school year often centers around student stress, but parents also grapple with the adjustments and demands of school routines. As mentors and role models, parents play pivotal roles in managing schedules, helping with homework, driving to activities, and navigating the challenges of high school and college applications. On top of these parenting responsibilities, work duties, household tasks, and personal obligations increase the risk of stress and anxiety for parents.
Self-care is crucial, as it allows parents to be more effective caregivers. Taking time to care for one’s own well-being is essential and not something to feel guilty about. Here are some strategies to manage stress and maintain balance during the back-to-school season: Embrace the Present
Parents often ruminate on past actions in pursuit of perfection, but it's important to recognize that perfection is unattainable. Instead, focus on doing your best and embracing opportunities for improvement. Encourage your children to meet their reading goals or complete college applications, but also value the present moments and appreciate your efforts.
Connect with Yourself
Finding personal ways to connect with oneself is critical. This connection can be fostered through:
• Prayer, meditation, yoga, or practicing silence
• Reading or writing in a journal
• Eating healthy and getting plenty of sleep
• Exercising, stretching, going to the gym, or visiting the beach
• Taking a bath and replacing unhealthy habits with healthy ones
Share with Other Adults
Recognizing that you are not alone in your experiences is powerful. Connecting with other parents to express your feelings and discuss challenges can provide a sense of community and reciprocity. Genuine communication with peers can be a source of comfort and support.
Be Mindful of Control
Accepting that not everything is within your control is essential. While you cannot control other people’s reactions, you can control your attitude and response. This awareness can minimize stress and anxiety, which often stem from feeling out of control. Focusing on what you can control, such as enjoying a favorite activity or sharing a special family meal, can be grounding.
Practice Self-Compassion
Parenting duties, household chores, and life itself can trigger anxiety, fear, worry, and grief. It’s important to acknowledge these feelings and understand your limits. Seeking guidance from a life coach or therapist can be a smart move, as these professionals can facilitate your journey. Remember, parents are important and special.
Maintain Flexibility
Embracing flexibility in your behavior and decisions regarding parenting duties, work tasks, and relationships can be challenging but beneficial. As role models, parents significantly influence their children's behavior and attitudes toward life. Managing your stress and emotions effectively will empower you to guide your children confidently in all they need to conquer in their own lives.

ARE YOU A MILLENNIAL OR A PARENT OF A MILLENNIAL?
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
Not having an estate plan is a failure to launch. The time to plan is now!
Here’s a quick guide to key estate planning steps tailored to all millennials out there.
As a millennial, you're shaping the future. It's time to protect your own—because adulting is hard enough without worrying about what happens next.
1. Pick Your Decision-Makers If you become unable to make decisions due to illness or injury, no one can step in without legal authorization. Choose who will handle your finances and healthcare by setting up a financial power of attorney and a medical power of attorney. You wouldn’t let just anyone pick your Netflix queue—don’t let them pick your life choices either.
2. Review Your Employment Forms Make sure your beneficiary designations for life insurance and retirement accounts are up-to-date. Incorrect or missing information could lead to your assets going through probate, delaying and complicating matters for your loved ones. Think of it like filling out your online dating profile—details matter!
3. Decide on Life Insurance Beneficiaries
• Individuals: A lump sum can be vulnerable to creditors or mismanagement. Imagine someone blowing it all on avocado toast or a girls’ trip to Vegas.
• Trust: Provides protection and control over how funds are used. It’s like setting up parental controls for your money.
• Charity: A meaningful way to leave a legacy. Plus, you can finally prove that you’re as philanthropic as you claimed on Instagram.
4. Name Your Retirement Beneficiaries
• Spouse: They may roll the account into their own for better asset protection. The ultimate “what’s yours is mine.”
• Minor Children: Consider setting up protections for when they reach adulthood. You don’t want them cashing out to buy the next viral gadget.
• Trust: Helps manage distributions and protect funds from creditors. Because sometimes, your money needs a babysitter.
• Charity: Reduces potential estate taxes. Giving back while keeping Uncle Sam at bay.
5. Have a Plan If You’re Unmarried Without a plan, state laws decide who inherits your assets, often leaving out significant others. Ensure your estate plan reflects your wishes. Don’t leave it to an accidental disaster like your last Hinge, eHarmony or Tinder date.
6. Don’t Forget Your Pets Appoint a caregiver and consider setting aside funds for your pet's care. You can even establish a trust to manage these funds and ensure your pet’s well-being. Because let’s face it, your fur baby is your real soul mate.
Start Planning Today. Thinking about the future can be tough, but planning now ensures peace of mind. Call us today, and let’s adult together—without the stress.
Great Putting Drills
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Low handicap players understand the importance of a good short game, especially on the putting green. Professional players have exceptional ball striking skills. In fact, a tour event is basically a putting contest. The best putter each week wins the tournament. With the proper techniques, everyone can develop into a solid putter. The following putting drills are designed to improve your ability to hole the ball on the green.
Clock Drill
Make the short putts. Nothing is more frustrating than hitting a great drive, placing the approach shot on the green and missing a twofoot par putt and walking away with bogey. Practice, practice, and practice from short ranges. The clock drill is excellent reinforcement. Begin by placing three balls in a line at three, six, and nine feet from the hole similar to the twelve, three, six and nine position on a clock. The goal is to make all twelve in a row. If you miss any putt, then go back to the beginning and start over.
Ladder Drill
The idea is to get the ball to stop as close to each tee as possible. The next step is to theoretically close the ladder. From the first tee, hit a 30-foot putt, followed by 20-foot putt followed by a ten-foot putt to the final tee. At the conclusion, you have successfully opened and closed the ladder. The drill continues by going through the same sequence from the opposite direction. If the first putts were all uphill, you are now faced with a series of difficult downhill putts. Once you can successfully navigate this drill, your feel on the greens should improve.
Path Drill
Improve your putting from long range. Give yourself the opportunity to make short putts inside five feet from the hole. Percentages that you’ll make a putt dramatically decrease the farther away you are from the hole. The ladder drill is designed to improve putting from longer distances. Place a tee in the ground in a line ten feet, 20 feet, 30 feet and 40 feet away. In this drill, you are attempting to control the distance you hit each putt. The ladder drill begins by hitting a putt to the first tee, which is ten feet away. Next, hit a 20-footer, then 30-footer followed by a 40-foot putt.
Many amateurs push or pull the putt off line. This is caused from an in-to-out or out-to-in swing path. The following drill will help develop a consistent path. Find a flat area on the green and place two clubs on the ground wide enough to place the putter head behind the ball. Swing the putter between the two clubs and hit the ball. If the putter hits any of the clubs, you are not swinging the putter down the target line. Make sure the putter head stays low to the ground and follows through.
It’s always great to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional and see what tips they have to share and teach to you as well.

o you get headaches? Eyes that feel tired or dry? Discomfort with your computer use? Pain in your neck and shoulders? Bouts of dizziness? Do these symptoms tend to get worse towards the end of the day? Do they tend to correspond with long periods of using a computer, tablet, smartphone or even reading? If this describes you, you definitely aren’t alone; and like many others, you’re probably wondering why. Your eyes could be the problem, and Neurolenses could be the solution. What is eye misalignment?
Each eye captures a clear photo, much like a camera. Your brain then fuses these two images. This line of communication between your eyes and your brain is a constant process that happens as long as both eyes are open. Some people’s eyes are perfectly aligned, meaning the visual data from their eyes can be combined seamlessly by their brain. But many others have what’s known as eye misalignment.
For the vast majority of people with eye misalignment, this misalignment is much more pronounced when focusing on an object that is in close range. As we become more reliant on our digital devices, these symptoms have become more prevalent. You may have even heard these symptoms referred to as Computer Vision Syndrome. Given the past events of 2020, remote working and learning had become a
reality for many people, causing eye misalignment to be more widespread. In fact, at least two out of three people experience the symptoms of eye misalignment. More than 55% of them experience these symptoms on a daily basis.
What are Neurolenses and do they work?
The lenses are inspired by a breakthrough discovery linking optometry and neurology. Neurolenses are designed to bring the eyes back into comfortable alignment. To do this, Neurolenses incorporate a technology called “contoured prism, “ which intelligently places the correction in the lenses where it’s needed the most. These lenses can be customized for every patient, and are available in any prescription. They are even a great solution for contact lens wearers or patients that don’t need a prescription at all. They are premium lenses that come standard in high quality materials with high quality anti-reflective treatments. Most importantly, Neurolenses lead to dramatic symptom relief for the majority of wearers. 93% of patients have experienced symptom relief from wearing Neurolenses. In fact, 81.6% of patients suffering from chronic daily headaches reported their symptoms were substantially reduced or “basically gone” after wearing Neurolenses for 90 days. In a study concerning Computer Vision Syndrome, 100% of the patients suffering of Computer Vision Syndrome had a positive response to treatment
with Neurolenses. Many Neurolenses wearers have been able to greatly reduce or even eliminate the need for pain-relieving medications.
How do I find out if I’m a candidate for Neurolenses?
The staff at Weston Family Eyecare will evaluate the frequency and severity of your symptoms. They will clinically measure the amount of eye misalignment using a diagnostic device called the Neurolens Measurement Device. The information gathered will help Dr. Therrien create a complete visual solution to comprehensively address your unique needs.
You can start your journey towards relief by taking the Neurolens Test online evaluation that will tell you if you are a potential candidate.

GROWING PAINS IN CHILDREN OR MERELY FLAT FEET?
Foot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.
Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night.
Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a

general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain.
Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot.
An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated.

SW RANCHES UPDATE
By David S Kuczenski, Esq.
Howdy Ranchers,
Thank you for the honor of letting me serve you as Vice Mayor for the past year. If you have questions or concerns, I welcome your call. I cannot promise to solve every problem, but I will listen and seek a solution.
As a Council Member, the Council votes on both Legislative actions and Quasi-Judicial proceedings. Council Legislative actions include adopting ordinances, resolutions, making appointments to advisory boards, approving contractual agreements, setting tax and service fee rates and passing a budget. Quasi-Judicial actions, on the other hand, are those in which the Town Council sits as an arbitrator of facts, much like a group of judges. These hearings include elements of a judicial or court proceeding, hence the term "Quasi-Judicial."
In this role, the Council receives facts and applies the law based on the findings of facts. Quasi-judicial proceedings, for the most part, involve decisions primarily on important landuse questions. Our Town Charter requires a 5-0 vote of the Council on these matters.
Florida law requires Quasi-Judicial proceedings to follow Due Process, including proper notice, a fair opportunity for all concerned to be heard, the right to present evidence and to cross-examine adverse witnesses.
When the Council declares its judgment on the application, the Council’s judgment must be based upon only the evidence presented at the hearing.
Quasi-judicial hearings are often attended by the Applicant, Intervening Parties, Experts and the Public. Every QuasiJudicial Hearing is open to the public and subject to public input. All participants in a Quasi-Judicial proceeding are entitled to due process.
Generally, Ex-Parte Communications on Quasi-Judicial questions are prejudicial. If a Council Member has ex-parte communications regarding the issue, the Town attorney asks whether any Council Member has had any conversations with anyone about the application. Council Members must disclose the conversation and disclose whether the Council Member can remain impartial despite the conversation.
After all the evidence is presented, public comment is closed, and the Council deliberates and votes on the question.
I hope I was able to provide a basic explanation of this process.
As Vice Mayor, I fight to preserve Southwest Ranches' unique rural lifestyle and minimize any changes. Let's protect and maintain what makes our community special. I strive to return all phone calls within 24 to 48 hours. If you have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.
Very Truly Yours,
David S Kuczenski, Esq.

Protecting Our Precious Cargo: A GUIDE TO CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY AND SAFE DRIVING PRACTICES
By Chief Todd Draizin
Safe driving and child passenger safety are critical components of keeping children secure on the road. Every year, thousands of children are involved in car accidents, making it essential for parents and caregivers to be vigilant about car seat safety and driving practices. By understanding the importance of child passenger safety and following best practices, we can significantly reduce the risk of injury or death for young passengers. Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of injury and death for children. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13. The proper use of car seats, booster seats, and seat belts can reduce the risk of serious injury or death by up to 71%. Selecting the appropriate car seat is the first step in ensuring child passenger safety. The type of car seat depends on the child's age, weight, and height:
• Rear-Facing Car Seats: It is recommended that infants and toddlers remain in a rear-facing car seat until at least the age of 2 or until they reach the maximum
height and weight limit specified by the car seat manufacturer. Rear-facing seats provide better support for a child's head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash.
• Forward-Facing Car Seats: Once a child outgrows a rear-facing seat, they may be able to transition to a forward-facing seat with a harness and tether. The harness helps limit forward movement during a crash. Be sure to check the height and weight limits on the seat to ensure you are using the correct seat for your child.
• Booster Seats: Children who exceed the height and weight limits of a forward-facing car seat should use a booster seat until the vehicle's seat belt fits properly. Booster seats position the seat belt so it fits over the child properly.
• Seat Belts: When children are large enough to fit properly, they should use the vehicle's seat belt. When positioned properly, the lap belt should lie snugly across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt should lie snugly across the shoulder and chest.
Proper installation and use of car seats
are crucial. An incorrectly installed seat can reduce its effectiveness in protecting a child during a crash. Parents and caregivers should carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Department in Weston is pleased to help with installing your child’s car seat. To schedule an appointment with a certified child passenger safety technician, please schedule an appointment online at https://bsofirerescuepubliceducation.as.me
In addition to ensuring children are secured correctly, practicing safe driving habits is vital. Drivers must be sure to avoid all distractions and obey speed limits while driving. Additionally, all drivers and passengers must be sure to buckle up every ride, every time.
Child passenger safety is a shared responsibility. By choosing the right car seat, ensuring proper installation, and practicing safe driving habits, we can protect children and reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of an accident. Remember, safe driving and vigilant care can make all the difference in safeguarding our most precious cargo.
The city of Weston began in the 1950s when Arthur Vining Davis amassed 15,000 acres of land in far western Broward County, calling the planned community Indian Trace. It took nearly 20 years for Davis, through his company, Arvida, to develop and prepare the plans for developing the land and to prepare the financing. By 1978 the first developmental plans were complete. The next step was approval of a Development of Regional Impact (DRI) to study the impact on the health, safety, and welfare of citizens in a specific area. The original permit allowed 25,000 dwelling units to be constructed, although subsequent amendments reduced that number to 17,000.
In 1981 the Indian Trace Community Development District was created in order to finance and manage the construction and to maintain and operate the water and sewer mains, water management bodies, and roadways. The developer appointed a five-member Board of Supervisors to govern the district. In 1984 Arvida changed the name of the project from Indian Trace to Weston. (Some longer-term residents may recognize Arvida Parkway as the original name of Royal Palm Boulevard.
The name was changed for two reasons: the street has openings on I-75 for both the north-south orientation and the east-west orientation, which could lead to confusion for first responders; also, the city of Weston has a code against naming streets or public buildings after individuals. Alas, there will never be a Mead Boulevard.) Also in 1984, the first homes were built in Windmill Ranch and Country Isles. Weston now had its first residents.
Weston’s population grew, and by 1991 it could claim over 5,000 residents. In the first step of turning governance of the city over to the residents and out of the hands
WESTON'S JOURNEY From Indian Trace to a Thriving City
By Commissioner Henry Mead
of the developers, an election was held for three of the five seats on the Board of Supervisors. Harry Rosen—who later became Weston’s first mayor—Kim Ballis, and Mark Myers were elected. In 1993 the remaining two seats on the Board of Supervisors were filled when Eric Hersh— who would also become mayor—and John Flint—who would later become Weston’s city manager from 1997 until he retired in 2019—were added.
As the city continued to grow, the newly elected Board of Supervisors initiated a study in 1994 to determine if Weston should incorporate as a city, annex to a neighboring city, or remain a part of unincorporated Broward County. A nine-member committee composed of residents and outside consultants was appointed in 1995 to complete the study. Additionally, neighboring cities of Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, and Sunrise were contacted to explore the interest and benefits of annexing Weston to another city.
By late 1995, the study concluded that the residents would be best served by forming a new city. This would permit the tax dollars generated by the residents to remain in Weston, under the control of and for the use of residents. It also allowed self-determination in planning and zoning for the city. The Board was unanimous in voting to file a local bill with Broward County, allowing residents to vote on incorporation. With County and State Legislature approval, the residents of Weston went to the polls on September 3, 1996, and 90% of the voters opted in favor of incorporation.
The Board of Supervisors now became the interim City Commissioners, with Harry Rosen as interim mayor and Eric Hersh, John Flint, and Mark Myers as interim Commissioners (a fourth Commissioner relocated and resigned before taking the oath of office). As part of the same bill, residents of Bonaventure were provided
an opportunity to become part of the City of Weston or the City of Sunrise. In April 1997, Bonaventure residents voted two to one to join Weston.
Because Bonaventure was a separate entity before merging with Weston, much of its substructure was in place and contracts for service had been established that differed from agreements in place for Weston as it existed at the time. The Bonaventure Development District, a dependent district of the City of Weston, was established to honor the responsibilities and obligations of the area. A concomitant district, the Indian Trace Development District, was established to do the same for the city outside the Bonaventure area. The two development districts are dependent on the City of Weston so their governing body is the same as that of the City Commission.
In June of 1997, Weston residents voted in their first city election, choosing Harry Rosen as Mayor and Eric Hersh, Edwin Jacobson, Steve Keller, and Mark Myers as Commissioners. A month later, the Commission hired Weston’s first City Manager, John Flint, and contracted with several entities to provide services for the city. This was the beginning of the concept of Weston as a city that contracts for its services, establishing criteria for independent businesses to engage in competitive bidding to work for the city.
In 1999, Jamie Cole with Weiss, Serota, and Helfman (Jamie’s name was later added to the firm) was hired as the city attorney and remains so today. The city continued to add to its westernmost land mass, bringing its total area to 16,539 acres, or 25.8 square miles.
As it exists today, Weston has used all available land and has no room for additional growth. The longevity of the city’s staff, key employees, and providers; its record of safety and desirability as a place to live; and its lushness and peaceful surroundings is a testament to the success of Weston’s early visionaries and those who made it happen.

What You N eed to Know.
Bad breath in pets may be a sign of periodontal disease that could lead to other health problems. Periodontal disease starts when plaque (a bacterial film) coats the tooth. Plaque hardens (calcifies) into tartar, a thick yellow or brown layer on the teeth. Tartar can irritate the gums, creating an environment where bacteria thrive. As the disease progresses, the gums become tender, red, and swollen and the bacteria continue to multiply. Eventually, the inflamed gums pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that trap more bacteria and food particles. The gums bleed, the roots of the teeth may become exposed, teeth may become loose, and your pet may feel pain when eating. If the bacteria enter the bloodstream, they can create problems for organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

What to Do
Your pet needs routine dental care from your veterinarian and you. Annual veterinary checkups are essential for helping your veterinarian monitor your pet’s dental health, but don’t wait for a checkup if you suspect a problem. After an examination, your veterinarian may recommend a dental prophylaxis (tooth cleaning) for your pet. Anesthesia and pain medication are used for dental procedures. If dental disease is severe, your veterinarian will recommend the best treatment, which may include tooth extraction.
Pets are never too young to start having their teeth brushed at home; in fact, the younger they are, the better. Slowly and gently introduce your pet to toothbrushing. It should be a bonding experience that is reinforced with praise and rewards. Begin by rubbing your pet’s teeth and gums with soft gauze wrapped around your finger. Gradually switch to using a specially designed pet toothbrush or baby toothbrush with pet toothpaste (do not use toothpaste for people because it can upset your pet’s stomach). If your pet is most at ease on your lap, keep his or her toothbrush next to the chair where
you sit together. Focus on your pet’s gum line, and work up to 30 seconds of brushing for each side of the mouth at least a few times a week. If your pet won’t tolerate brushing, your veterinarian can recommend plaque-preventive products for your pet. There’s no substitute for regular brushing, but feeding dry food can help keep your pet’s teeth and gums in good condition. In addition, special plaque-reducing foods, treats, and toys can help. The Seal of Acceptance from the Veterinary Oral Health Council appears on products that meet defined standards for plaque and tartar control in dogs and cats. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Caring for your pet’s teeth can have several benefits. For example, a few minutes of brushing each week can help give your pet a longer, healthier life.

LETHALITY ASSESSMENT
By State Representative Robin Bartleman
On July 1 of each year, new laws go into effect with the goal of improving the lives of Floridians. Over the past four years, I have successfully passed 12 pieces of legislation, many times I am able to amend my bills into other bills as was the case with House Bill 729 – Lethality Assessments, which was amended from the floor onto Senate Bill 1224 – Protection of Children and Victims of Crimes. Representative Baker (R-Jacksonville) and I sponsored this bipartisan bill which drew inspiration from the tragic story of Gabby Petito, a domestic violence victim who was murdered by her fiancé while on a road trip across the county. At one point during her trip law enforcement was called; however, Utah did not utilize lethality assessments at that time. These assessments help law enforcement make informed decisions in real-time and connect victims with essential resources. The new law mandates the use of them in
Florida and is a lifeline for those in peril. The law it was amended into also makes changes to the Statewide Guardian Ad Litem Program to enhance services to children in dependency court and child welfare including developing specialized training in the dynamics of child sexual abuse when serving child victims and visitation. It also mandates the courts to appoint a guardian Ad Litem. For more information on this bill, visit: https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/ Bill/2024/1224/Analyses/2024s01224.hms. cf.PDF
