The Arts Council of Greater Weston is thrilled to announce the expansion of the Weston Foreign Film Series, now in its 19th year. Originally held at the Weston Branch Library, the series has grown to four screenings per evening at AMC Weston 8 Cinema. This season, a sixth film has been added in response to popular demand.
Irene Carraway, Director of WFFS, shared her excitement: “We are delighted to offer an additional film this season, after many requests. The Committee has worked diligently to select award-winning international films that we believe our audience will love.”

Rotary Club of Weston Offers 2 New Membership Options
For almost 40 years, Members of the Rotary Club of Weston have been providing help where needed to Weston, the surrounding communities, and the World. Rotarians are known by their motto, Service Above Self, and we are often asked by others who see us at service projects around town (like the Rise Against Hunger event held last month at the YMCA), “How can I get involved?” The answer is that it’s simpler than ever. The Rotary Club of Weston not only meets every Thursday morning at The Club at Weston Hills for a 7:30 am breakfast meeting but has added two more outreach groups as part of the Club. A twice-monthly meeting on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6pm and another on the second and fourth Thursday also at 6pm. Both meetings rotate locations and are typically held at partnering restaurants around town. Those joining either of these new groups are full Members of the Rotary Club of Weston and these added time and location options have made it attractive for those that are unable to make the early morning meetings but want to be involved in service projects to help others.
The Evening Club, which has been meeting for the past 6 months, is a casual group of men and women who enjoy not only the service aspects but also the social aspects the group offers. At each meeting local experts are invited to speak about relevant and interesting topics. In recent months topics have included bee keeping and pollination, photography, floral arranging, recycling, fasting, mixology and even “what to do if you win the lottery”. Most meetings at the evening club last an hour and refreshments are usually served.
For those wishing to speak in their native Spanish language, we have a second option. The Rotary Club of Weston Impact Group now meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 6pm, with one of the monthly meetings being held in Spanish and the other
being more of a social event where all languages are spoken. This group also rotates amongst area restaurants and businesses and is open to all.
Members of these 2 new groups enjoy the benefits of being part of the Rotary Club of Weston, with its many opportunities for participating in large group service projects like weekend beach clean-ups, food bank distribution, bike collections and other events raising funds for worthwhile charities in South Florida and beyond.

A Follow-Up on Her Musical Journey Back to Weston
In 2016, Shelbie Rassler graduated from Cypress Bay High School where she was a saxophonist and drum major with the CB band. Recipient of a Western Music Society Scholarship, she went on to study music at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and got her Masters in Music Composition at Julliard in 2022.
Shelby returned to Weston on September 6 as the conductor of the orchestra for the sold-out "Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse" as part of a 3-month tour with concerts almost every night across the US.
Before heading to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, she found the time to stop by her old band room at Cypress Bay and meet with Band Director Brett Dawson who told her she would be so welcome to visit again and spend more time with everyone.
The "Spider-Man Across the SpiderVerse" live concert is an amazing
experience. The animated movie is a high-paced, action-packed and ultra-colorful animation movie that sparked bursts of enthusiasm and cheers in the audience each time a new Spider-Man was featured and saved the day. The music by Daniel Pemberton was performed live by the orchestra, conducted by Shelbie, with the same energy and with perfect synchronization. The orchestra itself was not a traditional one: a DJ, 2 electric guitars, and 3 drums/percussion sets were added to the brass, strings and winds sections. For an audience of all ages, and so many Spider-Man-Marvel fans, it was a magical demonstration of how the music, performed live, enhanced all the special effects and the action taking place on the screen. It was past 10.30 pm, when most of the audience had left, that Shelbie appeared and met with all the family and friends who had booked their seats to see her on stage that night and congratulate her for such an
amazing accomplishment. The Weston Music Society was present too, so happy and proud to celebrate one of their star scholarship recipients.
Weston Music Society President Lou Marett notes, "We want the Weston community to be aware and proud of all their neighbors who succeed in the performing arts world. Their success is an invaluable contribution to all of us, and the WMS is committed to supporting them locally in every way possible."
One Morning in September
The Palace at Weston hosted a special event to honor Edwin Jorge, a 9/11 survivor and former Regional Manager of the New York Peace Corps Office. Edwin had been in Building 6 of the World Trade Center when the North Tower collapsed. Activity Director Justin Valdes shared Edwin’s powerful story and recited his poem, One Morning in September, https://peacecorpsworldwide.org/onemorning-in-september-by-edwin-jorgejamaica/ reflecting on his experience. The Mayor of Weston, Margaret Brown, presented an honorary certificate to Edwin, followed by a photo opportunity with the Weston Fire Department, recognizing Edwin’s resilience and contributions to the community.

CALLING ALL CHALK ARTISTS
The Arts Council of Greater Weston announces the return of Chalk in the Park, a growing community favorite. It will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Library Park.
This year’s theme is "Word Play," so start thinking about incorporating words into your artwork, either by creating images that represent puns, drawing scenes inspired by idioms, or simply decorating words with artistic flourishes. Lifrancis Rojas, artist and ACGW Board Member suggest, “The "Word Play Chalk Contest" in the park invites participants to creatively illustrate idioms using colorful chalk. Artists will bring phrases like "It's raining cats and dogs" and "bending over backwards" to life on the sidewalks, turning the park into a playful outdoor gallery. Families will enjoy guessing the idioms, and judging will focus on creativity, accuracy, and artistic skill, blending humor, art, and language.
Cash prizes will be awarded.
To round out the day, there will be a DJ,
ice cream vendor and photo ops.

IN HONOR OF HALLOWEEN CELEBRITY ESTATE AND PROBATE NIGHTMARES

Many believe a substantial portfolio is necessary for an estate plan, but your most valuable asset is your autonomy over your own decisions. About 9 years ago, I had a client whose husband suffered a massive stroke. While he spent months in rehab unable to speak, she was unable to speak for him. Credit card companies, his car lease company and other impersonal institutions refused to communicate with her. She was frantic and helpless. Some easy estate planning would have provided her with the necessary documents to speak on his behalf.
Everyone needs a plan in case the unthinkable happens. Our clients range from Uber drivers to the uber-wealthy because an “Estate Plan” protects more than just money. We all must prepare for any potential incapacity and to consider everything from who will handle your healthcare to who will pay your credit cards if you cannot.
Frequent discussions with the public center around the topic of ‘Probate Nightmares.’ Recent examples, which may be familiar, highlight what should be avoided and serve as a reminder of the essential steps everyone must take.
1. No Will at All: this is called “an intestate estate” and is determined according to state law. The court may make decisions regarding who will receive your assets. The rockstar Prince died without a will. His full sister, five half-siblings, and hundreds more individuals claimed they were related. The IRS fought with his family for over 6 years to determine the value of his taxable estate. Lesson learned: avoid a nightmare by consulting with a trusted attorney to plan for the future.
2. Improperly Executed Will: Aretha Franklin's family assumed she had no will, but then a few handwritten documents were found, and her attorneys found a draft "Will of Aretha Franklin" that was never signed. Not one of the four alleged wills was completed according to state law. This forced her family and assets to remain stuck in court almost four years following her passing, awaiting a judge’s decision. Lesson learned: make sure your documents are properly signed and executed according to state law.
3. Choosing the Right Fiduciaries: Jerry Garcia’s family dealt with a complex will and a complex probate estate. He had named his 3rd wife the Executor (or Personal Representative) to be responsible for ongoing alimony payments to his second wife. This was not a wise decision and led to a family court battle. Lesson learned: choose the right people for the right positions involved in your future.
4. Deciding Who Gets Your “Stuff”: Robin Williams had a well-prepared estate plan, but his memorabilia, including an Academy Award, 6 Golden Globes and multiple Emmys, led to a bitter family feud. Lesson learned: personal property has value, whether emotional or financial. Don’t let your family fight over your belongings. Although each of the celebrities discussed likely had agents, managers, and attorneys heavily involved in their careers, none had an ideal estate plan.
Given the ever-changing laws and the complexities often inherent in today's families, everyone—famous or not—needs to take time to protect their loved ones with a complete, updated estate plan.

Fire Prevention Month: The Importance of Smoke Alarms in the Home

October is Fire Prevention Month, a time to focus on fire safety and ensure our homes are as safe as possible. One of the simplest yet most crucial steps you can take to protect your family is to install and maintain smoke alarms. These devices serve as an early warning system, giving you and your loved ones precious time to escape in case of a fire.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. In many of these cases, alarms were either missing or had dead batteries. A working smoke alarm reduces the risk of dying in a home fire by half, which makes it a life-saving investment. Fires can spread quickly, often in a matter of minutes. Without an early alert, sleeping or distracted occupants may not have enough time to escape safely.
Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly to make sure they are functioning properly. Simply press the test button on the device, and if it beeps, it is working. Most alarms are powered by replaceable batteries that should be changed at least once a year. A helpful tip is to change the batteries when you adjust your clocks for daylight saving time – which is coming up on November 3, 2024. If your smoke alarm is over 10
years old, it is time to replace it entirely.
In addition to installing and maintaining smoke alarms, having a home fire escape plan with a designated family meeting place is essential. Choose a fixed, easily recognizable location outside the home, such as a mailbox, as your meeting place. Make sure every family member knows where this meeting place is, what the smoke alarm sounds like, and how to respond when it goes off. It is important to practice your escape plan at least twice a year to ensure everyone is prepared in case of an emergency. How does Glaucoma damage my eyes?
• The Optic Nerve carries visual information from the eye to the brain
Optic Nerve cells degenerate and die slowly
• As nerve cells die, vision is slowly lost
• Vision loss begins in the peripheral, or side vision
• Vision loss is not recognized until a significant amount of nerve damage occurs! That’s why glaucoma is known as the “sneak thief of sight.”
• The Aqueous Humor, a clear fluid inside of the eye, is continuously produced and drained out of the eye
• If production increases, or draining decreases, glaucoma develops due to increased pressure

Pediatric Foot & Ankle Sprains May Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury

Injuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. X-rays can fail to provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present.
Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of 13 and 18, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of
the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone.
Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating.
X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary.
Treatment options include:
1. Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the
faster it heals.
2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Non-weight bearing would be mandatory.
3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked.
The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment.

SW RANCHES UPDATE

The Town of Southwest Ranches new advisory board, Zero Waste, has hit the ground running. They are tasked with educating our residents on how to Recycle, Reuse and Refurbish. This education process will take some time, but I believe Southwest Ranches can lead the way on reducing the amount of trash going into the landfills, and as such there will be no need for any incinerator.
Our two-year-old “Safety and Traffic” advisory board has been sunsetted for 2024, but not without first giving the Town Council some great recommendations on how to help control speeding and the buying of equipment (tag readers) that will help our police track any suspicious activity.
Southwest Ranches has partnered with the Broward County Property Appraiser's office to help our equestrian and agricultural community with the process of filing all the necessary paperwork needed, to first apply for and to keep their classification. This is a great way to help maintain our unique and rural lifestyle.
General elections are right around the corner. Now is the time to check and make sure you are still properly registered to vote. There have been some changes, both by the State and County, regarding voter registration. Be an Informed Voter, before you cast your vote, look to see who the candidates are that you would want to govern your nation, your state, your county and your local government. As my granddaughter said, “A simple search on the computer can provide some Very interesting information.”

wide variety of skin and coat conditions can cause your dog to itch and scratch, but pinpointing the problem can sometimes be difficult because many skin disorders cause similar outward signs. Following are four major categories of skin conditions seen in dogs.
Bacterial Skin Infections
The most common bacteria identified in bacterial skin diseases in dogs are Staphylococcus. Not contagious to people or other pets, these bacteria commonly cause a condition called “pyoderma” that results in itchy, yellow pustules; reddened skin; ulcerations; and/or hair loss.
Bacterial skin infections are usually diagnosed based on the patient’s history as well as the location and appearance of the affected area. Your veterinarian may also perform blood tests and skin tests to determine the origin of the problem. Many bacterial skin infections have an underlying cause, such as parasite infestation, hormonal or immune system disorder, or allergy. If the underlying cause is not treated appropriately, the skin infection will likely return. Treatment involves an antibiotic shampoo followed by application of an antibiotic ointment and oral antibiotics.
Fungal Skin Infections
The most common fungal skin infection in dogs is ringworm, which causes circular patches of hair loss usually on the head and legs. Diagnosis is best made via a fungal culture, where your veterinarian will pluck a few hairs from the edge of the circular patch and grow the fungi to see exactly what it is. Treatment for ringworm involves bathing the dog in a special fungicidal shampoo and administering antibiotics. Complete eradication of the infection can take a month or longer.
Ringworm is quite contagious to both people and other pets. Therefore, children and other household pets should be kept away from an infected dog during the treatment period. Anyone coming into contact with the affected dog should wash their hands regularly.
Allergic Skin Diseases
Allergies develop when your pet’s immune system overreacts to certain substances, causing tissue irritation. Skin conditions caused by allergy are challenging to diagnose and difficult to treat. Your veterinarian will first rule out all other types of skin irritation before making a diagnosis of allergy. Allergic dermatitis can be triggered by natural and artificial fibers, drugs, plants, dust, and food ingredients.
Treatment of allergies in dogs varies from ointments and sprays to injections and oral medication. A steroid called cortisone is sometimes used to ease the itching, but it can cause other health problems if used long-term. Although there is no cure for allergies, they can be controlled. The best remedy is to avoid whatever it is that sparks the allergy.
Parasitic Skin Diseases
There are a number of parasites that can infest dogs, all of which irritate the dog and cause self-mutilation from excessive
scratching and biting. Fleas are one of the biggest culprits. Repeated infiltration by fleas can cause an immediate skin reaction to even one bite. If your dog is allergic, he will scratch excessively, causing redness, bumps, pustules, scabs, and hair loss in the affected areas. Other small bugs such as chiggers, deer flies, and gnats can also bother dogs, but they don’t typically cause extensive skin problems.
Sarcoptic mites, also called “scabies” or “red mange,” inflame the skin and create numerous small scabs. Because they burrow under the skin, they are intensely uncomfortable for the dog but are often difficult to diagnose. Demodex mites are commonly found in small numbers in all dogs, but a percentage of dogs can experience an extensive infestation that leads to skin problems.

Most skin conditions can be controlled but not cured and therefore require frequent, sometimes lifelong, treatment. No matter the cause of your dog’s skin irritation, it is possible to ease his pain and suffering. When you do, it will be a relief for both of you.

DEPRESSION & MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

As I reflect on the past four years, I am filled with gratitude for the trust and support you have shown me. It has been an incredible honor to represent you and our community. Together, we have accomplished much, including the passage of ten significant pieces of legislation that I believe will positively impact our district and the state for years to come. In October, we observe Depression and Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the signs, symptoms, and impacts of depression. This Legislative Session, the well-being of Floridians took priority with the implementation of the Live Healthy Act. This comprehensive legislation invests $1.2 billion to improve Florida’s healthcare system.
The Live Healthy Act includes language from my sponsored bill, House Bill 205 -
Community-based Mobile Crisis Intervention Services. Mobile Response Teams (MRTs) are designed to provide 24/7 emergency behavioral healthcare to anyone in Florida. The main goal of MRTs is to respond to situations where individuals are experiencing severe emotional or behavioral health crises and to provide de-escalation and resources in their community. This approach aims to reduce trauma, prevent unnecessary hospitalizations, and reduce criminal justice involvement. House Bill 205's provisions instruct the Agency for Healthcare Administration to seek approval for a Medicaid state plan amendment to add coverage for community-based mobile crisis intervention services and to allow the state to access federal funding for these services.
The new law also establishes health teaching hospitals that specialize in behavioral health education and training. Additionally, the law also permits up to five more facilities to earn this designation over the next year. This aims to strengthen Florida’s mental health care system by training the next

OCTOBER SENATE UPDATE

As we approach the November General Election, I want to highlight some critical constitutional amendments that will appear on your ballot. These proposed changes are more than just legal updates; some of them represent citizen-led initiatives that have overcome tremendous hurdles to reach the ballot. Due to increasingly restrictive laws, gathering enough signatures to put these initiatives forward has become a monumental and expensive task—making your participation in this process more important than ever.
What You Need to Know About Florida’s Constitutional Amendments
This November, Florida voters will see six amendments on their ballots. Each amendment needs at least 60% approval to pass, and two of them—focused on abortion access and legalizing recreational marijuana—are among the most significant in state history. Here’s a brief overview of what’s at stake:
Amendment 1: Partisan School Board Elections
This amendment would bring back partisan school board elections, meaning candidates will be listed with their political party affiliations starting in 2026. While supporters believe this change will increase transparency, others are concerned it could further politicize education.
Amendment 2: Right to Hunt and Fish
This amendment would establish a constitutional right to hunt and fish in Florida, ensuring these activities remain protected from potential future restrictions. Critics worry it could affect wildlife management, but supporters say it safeguards Florida’s outdoor traditions.
Amendment 3: Legalizing Recreational Marijuana
Driven by a citizen-led campaign, this amendment would legalize recreational marijuana for adults over 21, allowing personal use and possession within defined limits. Proponents point to economic benefits and personal freedoms, while opponents raise concerns about regulation and enforcement. Securing millions of signatures, this initiative is a landmark decision for voters.
Amendment 4: Abortion Access
Another citizen-driven initiative that secured millions of signatures, this amendment guarantees access to abortion in Florida up to fetal viability –ending government interference into medical exam rooms, instead leaving decisions about reproductive healthcare up to women and their doctors. If passed, it would overturn the state’s current six-week abortion ban. Importantly, this amendment does not affect the Legislature’s authority to require parental or guardian notification before a minor has an abortion. It also would not allow abortion until birth, as some critics have alleged; this is false information.
Amendment 5: Homestead Property Tax Adjustment for Inflation
This amendment would adjust the homestead property tax exemption to account for inflation, providing potential tax relief to homeowners. However, there are concerns about the financial impact on local governments.
Amendment 6: Repeal of Public Campaign Financing
This amendment seeks to repeal the public funding option for political campaigns in Florida, which helps candidates for governor and state cabinet positions. While supporters argue it will save taxpayer money, opponents worry it could limit opportunities for less-funded candidates.

As the voice of the business community in southwestern Broward County, the Weston FL Chamber of Commerce is deeply committed to fostering the well-being of our residents, businesses, and environment. We understand that Miami-Dade County is proposing to develop a wasteto-energy plant (incinerator) at the Opa-Locka Airport West site and this proposal has raised significant concerns among our members and the wider community.
After conducting a comprehensive survey of our membership, we found that 85% of our members oppose the incinerator’s construction. The concerns expressed by our members focus primarily on potential negative impacts on air quality, environmental sustainability, and the overall health and well-being of our community.
We acknowledge the importance of effective waste management and understand that alternative solutions may involve their own challenges, including potential cost implications for businesses. However, the overwhelming consensus among our members underscores the need for careful consideration of the environmental and health implications of any proposed waste management solution. Consequently, the Chamber is opposed to the incinerator project as currently proposed.
The Chamber advocates for a thorough and transparent decision-making process that includes input from all stakeholders and carefully considers all potential impacts. We encourage the exploration of alternative waste management strategies that prioritize both environmental sustainability and economic viability.
We remain committed to working collaboratively with local government, businesses, and community members to ensure that decisions made are in the best interests of our cities and its residents.
