Remembering Our Veterans

A

ugust 30, 2021, marked the official end of the war in Afghanistan. The 20-year combat operation, along with the war in Iraq, left us with the most combat Veterans since the Vietnam war. In fact, there are about 75,000 Veterans living in Broward County, according to the US Census Bureau. The fact that these men and women volunteered to put themselves in harm’s way makes them worthy of our respect regardless of political ideology or whether or not you supported these wars. Veterans Day gives us an opportunity to thank the Veterans among us, or at the very least think of the contributions these men and women have made to our society. Unfortunately, for some of our Veterans, the wounds of war don’t show up until after they return home. The suicide rate among Veterans is almost twice that of non-veteran adults, with the gap growing over the past 15 years. It is clear that the horrors of war never go away for some. If you know a veteran, especially someone who has served in combat, take time to reach out to them on November 11th. Let them know that you care about them and value that they are part of your life. While the ghosts of their past can perhaps never be silenced, your friendship could be the light that keeps them going.

10 Myths About Lung Cancer By Dennis J. Tishko, M.D., Director of Thoracic Surgery, Broward Health

L

ung cancer is a profoundly common and dangerous disease, but we don’t talk about it nearly enough. Did you know that lung cancer kills four times more women compared to breast cancer and three times more people compared to colon cancer? The good news is that lung cancer screenings can detect cancer early and there are excellent new treatments available. By educating yourself on lung cancer, you could save your life and those you care about. Myth # 1 - “Lung cancer is not very common.” Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. It kills more Americans than breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, melanoma, all sarcomas, all childhood cancers and all domestic violence combined. Myth #2 - “Lung cancer is a hopeless death sentence.” Caught early, lung cancer can be curable in more than 95% of cases. Surgical removal of early stage lung cancers can be extremely effective with excellent results. With a late diagnosis, lung cancer is very difficult to treat and survival is not nearly as good compared to when lung cancer is diagnosed in its earliest stages. Myth #3 - “Only smokers get lung cancer.” About 20% of all lung cancer occurs in people who have never smoked and who have no risk factors. In fact, there

are about as many people dying from lung cancer as there are dying from liver cancer. Lung cancer in non-smokers appears to be increasing. Non-smokers can and do get lung cancer. Myth #4 - “Air spreads cancer.” Cancer does not spread when it meets the air, although this old wives’ tale persists today. This false belief has caused much useless worry, especially in the Black community, where more than 60% of the population believes this false narrative. These wrong ideas can cause delays in diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately lead to lower survival rates. Myth #5 - “More women than men die from lung cancer.” Actually, more men are diagnosed with and die from lung cancer compared to women. In fact, women with lung cancer have better survival rates compared to men. Myth # 6 - “Women are more likely to die from breast cancer than lung cancer.” WRONG! Women are more than twice as likely to die from lung cancer than breast cancer. The idea that breast cancer is a bigger killer than lung cancer has led women to focus on mammogram screenings and ignore lung cancer screenings, even though lung cancer screenings are highly effective. Myth #7 - “There is no way to find lung cancer early.” Lung cancer screenings are extremely effective at finding early cancers. The screening test is a quick,

4-second CAT scan of the lungs. No contrast is used, so there are no needles, no pain and very low X-ray exposure. In addition, these screenings are covered by virtually all insurances. Myth #8 - “Alternative medicine works just as well as real medicine.” This is another very dangerous, and sadly, a common belief. A recent study showed that 40% of Americans believe that some form of “alternative” medicine like vitamins, oxygen, supplements, enemas or crystals can cure any cancer, and 48% of millennials hold this belief. The truth is that lung cancer treatment is very complex. It requires the sophisticated efforts of surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists and a wide team of specialists. Marvelous medical advancements are being made and are proving to be very effective, helping patients to live longer than ever. Alternative therapies have not shown these benefits. Myth #9 - “Smoking marijuana is safe because it is natural.” Smoking is dangerous. Period. Whether it’s tobacco or marijuana, the products of smoking are the products of burning. This combustion produces a vast number of chemicals that can cause cancer. The deeply inhaled and retained smoke from marijuana is no different. Studies have linked marijuana smoking with many serious health problems, including cancer and mental health problems. Smoking anything is bad. Myth #10 -” It’s too late to quit smoking now.” It is never too late to quit smoking. The beneficial effects of quitting start soon after the last puff. Lungs begin to clear, breathing improves and many risks begin to decline. A lifetime of smoking will not reverse immediately, but the benefits of quitting are very much worth the effort.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Talking About Death

S

By Bruce Iden, Esquire

ooner or later we all die. It will happen to me, and as upsetting as it may be to think about, it will happen to you, too. It’s simply a fact. And while we don’t know when or how death will occur, we hope the end comes peacefully when we are very old, surrounded by those we love, having lived a long and good life. No one lives forever. Death is a part of life, yet most people find the topic very difficult to think about and especially hard to discuss with others. Talking about what will happen to your family when you pass away can be a very emotional subject. And as with all emotionally-charged subjects, it is often easier to ignore. Or think about later. Is estate planning on your “to do” list? Perhaps you are superstitious. Can just talking about something make it more likely to happen? It is common for me to learn that new clients have taken months, often years, from the time they first started thinking about estate planning to when they called our office to schedule a consultation. For many, life provides a burst of motivation encouraging you to take care of matters sooner rather than later. Perhaps a health scare, or a vacation overseas? It may also be seeing the aftermath of a tragedy or the death of a friend or family member. Without proper planning, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind after the death of a loved one, during a very emotional time. Is that the last “gift” you want to leave to those you love? So how do you prepare to face what may happen to your family after you are gone? Is it necessary to have a will, a durable power of attorney, or other estate planning documents? The best place to start is by educating yourself as to what estate planning is. There are many websites devoted to wills, trusts, and other documents that you can explore. Take a look at our website and blog at www.idenlaw.com. By learning about the subject, it may be easier to discuss your needs. It won’t make you an expert, but when you consult an attorney you will be better prepared to formulate questions, which leads to the next step. Consider contacting an estate planning attorney to arrange a consultation. Many estate planning attorneys do not charge for this initial meeting. Keep in mind that you need to feel comfortable and at ease with the attorney and office staff you select. Chemistry is important, as are qualifications . Find someone you trust. Remember not all attorneys specialize in estate planning; some just dabble. Ask questions. Do your research. Look for competence and shared values. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington Universi▸ Bruce ty National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the Uni-

versity of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

LIGHTNING BOLT-SHAPED BUILDING

ypress Bay High School students are now attending class in style. The Weston school, which is the largest public High School in Florida, has long endured overcrowding complaints from parents, recently celebrated the opening of the new academic building. The new “900” building replaces 61 portable classrooms which have been on campus since 2016. The school, as it was initially constructed was designed to accommodate 3,200 students, far short of the school’s 4,700 student enrollment. The new building features 62 classrooms, labs, teacher planning rooms, and administrative offices. It is three stories tall and can accommodate up to 1,500 students. The project is part of the

District’s SMART Futures bond program, which also included renovations and improvements to the campus, including safety and security. In November 2014, Broward County voters approved an $800 million bond referendum that provides critically needed funding for students and schools. Broward County Public Schools has committed to investing the funding in safety, music, art, athletics, renovations, and technology (SMART) at every school. The first phase of the SMART Futures program was focused on safety & security upgrades and HVAC improvements. Phase 2, which the new Cypress Bay building is part of, is focused on adding classroom space to replace portables across the school system.

Weston Come on Down to Recycling Right! By Beverly Perkins

M

ore than 800 entries in 40 categories were recently received for the 2021 City-County Communications & Marketing Association (3CMA) competition. Of course, The City of Weston had an entry and took first place amongst 76 other winners. Pamela Solomon, Assistant Director of Communications, for the City of Weston, proudly accepted the “Savvy Award” for the City’s educational video “Recycling Right”. The Savvy Awards, held in conjunction with 3CMA’s Annual Conference, recognizes outstanding local government achievements in communications, public-sector marketing, and citizen-government relationships. The Savvies salute skilled and effective city, county, agency, and/or district profes-

sionals who have creatively planned and carried out successful innovations in communications and marketing. 3CMA accommodates local government organizations of all sizes and budget classes by judging entries in several different population groups. “It is exceptionally fulfilling to win a Savvy Award. Both I and Pam have been long-time members of the City-County Communications & Marketing Association (3CMA). Working for the City of Weston, I have won Savvy awards in the past as well, and the honor never fades. These are our peers from around the country; they are remarkable communicators and they put out incredible content, so to be the best of the best is a huge honor,” said Denise Barrett, Director of Communications Although recycling is readily accessible in the City, it is oftentimes done incorrectly. From landscaping scraps to greasy pizza boxes and styrofoam containers, it is important to know what is acceptable and what is not. “Recycling Right” was created and produced with one goal

in mind: to educate residents of all ages in a fun and memorable way. The creative video influenced by a classic television game show showed viewers ‘what to place’ and ‘what not to place’ in a recycling bin. Residents in the community were able to participate in the production which added humor and a hometown feel. “‘Recycling Right’ came about as a fun way to grab our resident’s attention to the ageold issue of getting the public to recycle right. We can do government services in a fun way that adults, teens, and kids will remember,” added Barrett.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Chillin’ with Cops Was a Slam Dunk By Beverly Perkins

F

or the first time, The Broward Sheriff Office (BSO) Weston District recently hosted a community policing event, “Chillin’ with Cops”, at the Weston Regional Park. The goal was for the deputies to interact with the young members of the community and their families in an informal setting to meet the Weston deputies and establish good police-community relationships. Everyone met on the basketball courts for some good old-fashioned sports fun. Kids of all ages got

to toss the ball around with the men in blue before enjoying snow cones and a surprise appearance by Burnie, The Miami Heat mascot, and the Miami Heat dancers. The event was a success with over 200 people attending. At the helm was Deputy Danielle Quinones. The ambitious officer was the brainchild behind it all because she wanted to improve people’s attitudes toward the police and increase their trust in law enforcement. “One of the most fundamental keys

to successful law enforcement is the relationship between the police and the communities we serve. Good police-community relations are imperative for developing trust and building community partnerships,” explained Deputy Quinones. “This event was filled with nothing but smiles and fun. It truly proved that these types of events are effective across all our community members. We are extremely grateful to work in such a beautiful community that welcomes us each day!” The framework for establishing trust between the community and the police has always been community policing. However, over time the nation’s communities’ character and composition have changed due to a shift in demographics, an influx of commuters, and the introduction of social media, and other online communication methods. Events such as these open the door for law enforcement officers and the

community to interact in a casual situation rather than a crisis. “Community outreach is a priority to us and something we strive to improve upon every day. This event was a great way to have fun while building relationships between our deputies and the youth of our community. What better way to get to know each other than while enjoying snow cones! Everyone had a blast playing basketball, soccer, and touring the SWAT truck! I can’t wait for our next event and the opportunity to meet some more of our residents,” exclaimed Lieutenant Michele McCardle.

POSITIVE PARENTING

Be A Blessing!

L

By Ivis Mateos

etting go of the pride and letting go of the pretentious gatherings is essential in order to enjoy a healthy family gathering this holiday. We all know that we are living in unprecedented times. Our generation has never been faced with so many moral, health & social challenges. We are all on the same roller coaster. There is no need to pretend everything is ok. There is no need to pretend that we have been under supernatural pressures and stresses. Therefore; it is important that we be transparent and honest with our loved ones instead of bringing more pressure onto ourselves and others during the holidays. Children are exhibiting the highest level of anxiety and depression ever at an increase of up to 68.5%, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, and they have declared this situation a national emergency. It is imperative that as a family we begin to work on limited stressors that are unnecessary to heal mentally. Let’s rethink how we spend this Thanksgiving. Instead of cleaning, cooking, running around trying to make things “perfect”, how about we simply organize space and time to share with our loved ones by ordering in, using paper plates & disposable cutlery to spend less time cleaning up the mess, and more time discussing things that we should be grateful for like our home, our health and our love for each other. Keep it simple, keep it stressed less, and keep it real. Play board games, tell stories, sit outside and watch your kids play. Be mindful of these moments that we have with our family. At the end of the holidays, it would be beautiful to see that the time was used to heal and be a better, stronger version of ourselves. I am thankful for you, my readers, and for my amazing staff and community for allowing me to be an inspiration to all of you. May you be blessed.

Threats at School are No Joke

F

ourteen-year old “Connor” was brushing his teeth on a quiet October Sunday night. He had finished his homework and was getting ready for bed. As Conner rinsed his toothbrush, a notification from his iPhone chimed in. He had received yet another Snapchat message. This message, however, was different from most. It read “October 28 will be a horrible day for you.”

By Jon Duka

The message was followed by a series of progressively more aggressive messages. Connor shrugged them off as probably from a friend attempting a rather lame joke and went to bed.

two teens who were responsible for sending the messages faced week-long suspensions. It could have been much worse.

The situation was no laughing matter, however, when Connor was pulled out of class the next day to be interviewed by Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputies. Other students had received similar messages, were frightened, and alerted a school guidance counselor. In the end, the

Broward County Schools, the BSO, and local police departments implore parents to sit down with their children and discuss the potential consequences of sending threatening messages over the internet. Four students in Pembroke Pines alone have been arrested and charged for making school threats. Kids as young as 12 years old have been charged with multiple felonies. In many such cases, the perceived threats were all just a joke-gone-wrong. “Even if you are joking, making threats to school property or others will not be tolerated,” said Officer Randy Vedrine in a video posted to Facebook by the Pembroke Pines Police Department, “they are an arrestable offense which could follow you for the rest of your life.” Helping kids understand the potential consequences of what may seem like an innocuous comment is important to maintaining a safe learning environment for all.

TIPS TO FINDING THE PERFECT ADULT COMMUNITY By Rose Sklar

S

o, are you considering a move to Active Adult Living? Looking for a more carefree lifestyle? The good news is, Adult Lifestyle living communities are not like the traditional senior living communities of yesteryear. Keep in mind that today’s 65-year-old is not like our parents. These communities are not like your parent’s retirement home. Times have changed. Today’s baby boomers are very active, many looking for amenities and socialization. The first question might be, “Why choose Florida?” The obvious answer is great weather and an extraordinary year-round lifestyle for sports for you or sports to entertain you. The next best answer is our great homestead advantages and that Florida has no state income tax. Your accountant or financial advisor would tell you to choose Florida! Then ask yourself, why are you moving? Are you looking to downsize? Are you tired of the big family home, climbing stairs, cleaning empty rooms/bathrooms and pool that, let’s face it, may not even be used? Are you looking for no maintenance and the freedom to come and go as you please? How about a gated community? How active are you? What kind of amenities do you like? What do you want around you? Do you enjoy restaurants, culture, or maybe a daily stroll on the beach? Are you near your doctors and a hospital, close to the airport, or family? Many of our active adult communities are action-packed with 24/7 activities and social calendars.

Grand Clubhouses with heated pools, gyms, organized activities, cooking classes, pilates, poker, holiday parties, and more are fairly standard in most communities. Will you use the gym, take a yoga class, play tennis, golf or pickleball or just swim some laps in the heated pool? You will have so many options available to you. You may also want to look for a niche community. Perhaps you like to play golf or go boating. You may want a country club lifestyle or never drive anything bigger than a golf cart. Ride around the community and stop and chat with the current residents to get to know them and get a feel for your comfort level living there. A few tips to be aware of is to always be careful of any restrictions. Can an adult child stay in your home and for how long? Are there age limits? What is the visiting protocol for the grandkids and guests? Be sure to check for any pet restrictions, including the number of pets allowed, weight, and breed restrictions. Even if you don’t have a pet now, you never know what your future new wonderful lifestyle will include! Also keep in mind that when the time comes to sell or bequeath the home, that the new owner must be 55+. Resale values may be something you might want to take into consideration. Always check with your accountant or financial advisor for important future planning. If the home goes to heirs and they cannot move in or do not wish to move in, they will most likely sell or rent. The good news is you will have lots of choices and options available to you. Take a few minutes and review the questions above and you will begin to get a blueprint for the best selection of your perfect adult community. You deserve it!

Appraisal Waivers

W

By Helena Grossberg

hen you finance the purchase a property through a conventional loan, the loan needs to conform to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac guidelines, and it will probably require an appraisal. But, does every loan require an appraisal? What if they have a recent appraisal on file? In some cases, they may be willing to waive the appraisal for certain transactions. Fannie Mae uses its Desktop Underwriter program to assess whether a borrower is a good risk for a loan. It looks at such factors as the income, assets, employment background and debt of the borrower, as well as the price of the property.

YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR AN APPRAISAL WAIVER, ALLOWING YOU TO:

• •

Save hundreds of dollars on the appraisal fee.

Eliminate the worry of a low appraised value.

Close faster, usually in 17 days or less.

WAIVE THE APPRAISAL AND THE FEE

Fannie Mae’s appraisal waiver offers are issued through the Desktop Underwriter® (DU®) for eligible transactions using Fannie Mae’s database of more than 31 million appraisal reports in combination with proprietary analytic data. The benefit of receiving an appraisal waiver is that it can shorten the loan origination process by eliminating the need to obtain and review an appraisal. During the negotiations between buyer and sellers, an appraisal can also be a stressful time, when the appraisal does not come up to the selling price, and it can jeopardize the sale, and a waiver certainly reduces one more contingency in the process. Exercising an appraisal waiver offer relieves the lender from enforcement of representations and warranties on the value, condition, and marketability of the property. It also reduces the expense of appraisal-related costs and delays in the originating process. Finally, to exercise an appraisal waiver, lenders have guidelines that must be followed carefully for eligibility, such as the amount of loan relative to the price of the property, its location, the type of loan, and many other factors. If you would like to know more, let’s set up an appointment to talk more. There are a lot of programs available for you to purchase your own home, refinance, or start investing. Let’s talk about it!

FROM THE STATEHOUSE

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

T

By State Representative Robin Bartleman

his month I will be traveling to Tallahassee for two more committee weeks in preparation for the legislative session. Last month I received the Policy Pioneer Award from the Florida Policy Institute for advocating on behalf of children’s health equity and wellbeing. The Florida League of Cities also awarded me the Legislative Appreciation Award for supporting local decisions on the Local Administration and Veteran Affairs committee. The Florida School Board Association awarded me Legislator of the Year for fighting against high stakes education and protecting our public schools. Last month I shared with you my bill to support our first responders. This month, I want to update you on our work in District 104 and what I am doing to provide quality, affordable health care for our kids. Democracy Day was a coordinated effort by volunteers and lawmakers in response to Senate Bill 90. Last month, my office canvassed to educate Broward residents on Florida’s new restrictive voting bill. If you vote by mail or use an absentee ballot, make sure that you request your ballot each general election cycle as per the new law.

Visit www.browardvotes.gov to check your voter status, request a Vote-By-Mail ballot, track your ballot, and learn everything you need to make your vote count. The Supervisor of Elections office staff can be reached M-Fri 8:30-5pm at (954) 357-VOTE (8683). I joined my friends and former colleagues on the Broward School Board for the FTX Charity Hackathon Kickoff. FTX Charity Hackathon is open to students ages 13-19 from Broward, Palm Beach, and MiamiDade. The competition challenges students to create a charity or improve an existing one focusing on physical and mental health. Students on the top 5 teams will be awarded $15,000 each and the winning charity project wins one million dollars! To learn more, visit ftxcharityhackathon.com. I filed HB 125 to expand KidCare, Florida’s Children’s Health Insurance Program, so that our working families have access to affordable health care. The minimum wage will incrementally rise to $15 over the next four years, yet this small increase in salary is not enough to help working families cover rising housing, food and childcare costs. It will also unintentionally push working families off of KidCare. No family should have to decide between a raise and their child’s healthcare. This

52 / Our City Weston / November 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

will strain Florida’s economy and health insurance programs. My bill will expand affordable coverage and create additional tiers that families can buy into. Working families are not looking for handouts, just hand-ups. Happy Thanksgiving! While the coronavirus makes it difficult to celebrate in person with family and friends this Thanksgiving, it also makes it all the more important to express your gratitude to the ones you love. So whether it is around the dinner table or over zoom, share with your loved ones how grateful you are for their presence in your life. I wish you all a safe and blessed holiday. With love,

Robin, Emma, & Sarah.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is

FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

SCHOOL NEWS

PEACE is the Word! By Beverly Perkins

B

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) recently celebrated their 12th annual” Choose Peace/Stop Violence” week. The campaign’s mission is to “educate, inspire, and empower youth to take action and bring about positive change for preventing youth crime and violence, and create safe, healthy, and thriving environments for children and families”. This year’s theme was “Recovering and Working Together in Peace for a Better World". Not only was it a call to action to spread compassion, kindness, and hope, but also a reminder to everyone as we still navigate the global pandemic. Additionally, it was also an opportunity to improve school culture and engage students. Without hesitation, Manatee Bay Elementary designed a “Peace Week” for their students and staff. These activities included performing an act of peace and kindness each day, reading for peace, wearing white, writing messages, and decorating with sidewalk chalk. “My students loved being involved in Peace Week. They value kindness and the world we live in. They understand that we can be different, but we still must care for each other and their

feelings. I was able to experience a group of students play with a child that was alone. This shows me that we need to take the time to be mindful, our children are watching and learning about the world around us,” said second grade teacher Kabina A. Saldana. However, not just for the designated week but each morning for the entire year, Manatee Bay offers a moment of silence to reinforce and set a tone for a reflective and peaceful day. They also encourage their teachers to have "Calming Corners" for students to have a place in each classroom for a peaceful break when needed. “This District wide ‘Peace Week’ initiative was perfect timing for our school to allow for our children to discuss and embrace peaceful ways of solving problems. This year more than ever, students need ways to solve problems. They are hiding behind these masks, and we need to ensure they have strategies for success,” stated Manatee Bay Principal Heather HedmanDevaughn. “One never knows what students are going through and teaching peace in addition to our standard curriculum helps to build and support the "whole child." That, I believe, is our higher calling in education.”

IMPINGEMENT SYNDROMES IN DANCERS By Dr. Carlo A. Messina

P

ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes Rest, Physical Therapy, and Anti-Inflammatory Medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with Arthroscopic Surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical Therapy and a short course of Anti-Inflammatory Medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and Arthroscopic Surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment!

Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. DIABETES & OUR EYES By Jane Therrien OD, FIAOMC, Optometric Physician

ype 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children can learn to manage their condition and live long healthy lives. Type 2 diabetes is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time it isn't able to keep up and can't make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels. Hyperglycemia is the technical term for high blood glucose (blood sugar). High blood glucose happens when the body has too little insulin or when the body can't use insulin properly. A number of things can cause hyperglycemia, if you have type 1 Diabetes, you may not have given yourself enough insulin. If you have type 2 Diabetes, your body may have enough

insulin, but it is not as effective as it should be, it is also possible that you ate more than planned or exercised less than planned. Stress from an illness, such as a cold or flu or mental stress can also cause hyperglycemia. People with diabetes are at a significantly higher risk for developing eye and vision disorders, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most serious sight-threatening complications of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy causes progressive damage to the tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina, the light-sensitive lining at the back of the eye. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy may lead to blindness. Those with diabetes are 40 percent more likely to suffer from glaucoma than people without diabetes. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by damage to the optic nerve resulting in gradual peripheral vision loss. With cataracts, the eye's clear lens clouds, which can block light and interfere with normal vision, and individuals with diabetes are 60 percent more likely to develop cataracts. Diabetes affects 30 million Americans and is a leading cause of preventable blindness in adults. 90% of Diabetics have Type 2 diabetes. The incidence of Type 2 diabetes in Americans < 20 years of age has grown 1100% since 1970. It is the fastest-growing subpopulation of diabetes by far. 79 million Americans are at high risk for developing diabetes within 10 years. There are 1.8 million new cases of Diabetes

diagnosed each year. Diabetes can be detected through a comprehensive eye exam. In fact, in 2017, doctors of optometry diagnosed more than 401,000 cases of diabetic retinopathy in patients who did not even know they had diabetes. Optometrists are often the first health care experts to detect diabetes – patients come in for an eye exam not realizing they have diabetes. Many eye problems show no symptoms until they are in an advanced stage. Visit your optometrist as soon as possible if you experience sudden blurred or double vision, trouble reading or focusing on near work, eye pain or pressure, a noticeable aura or dark ring around lights or illuminated objects, or visible dark spots in your vision or images of flashing lights. To manage Diabetes it is important to take prescribed medication as directed, keep glycohemoglobin test results ("A1c" or average blood sugar level) consistently under 7 percent, stick to a healthy diet that includes Omega 3s, fresh fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, control high blood pressure, and avoid alcohol and smoking. Visit your optometrist regularly for eye health care and to help prevent diabetic eye disease.

TEE TO GREEN

The Power of Imagination

on the Golf Course By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

W

hile some golfers have more athletic ability than others, every person can benefit from using mental skills to improve their lives and their golf games. Some of the organizational skills for quality of life and improved golf are: goal setting, making good conscious choices, adopting positive attitudes and beliefs, relaxation techniques, decision making, and enjoying life/golf in the moment. Every time you repeat a limiting belief such as one of these, you give it more power in your mind. In golf, as in life, what you think is what you create. Begin to question your beliefs. Is this what you really want to create? Use your awesome power of imagination to practice in your mind what you really want to happen. When you hear yourself reiterating a negative thought from your past, change the thought in your mind to a positive one. Golfers play golf because it is a challenge. Challenge yourself to change your beliefs and behavior to achieve the success you desire. Use the feeling that comes up as a cue for you to know whether your concerns are under your control, or out of your control. If you are worried about people or course conditions that you cannot control, replace your limiting thoughts with positive, constructive ones. For example, if you are anxious on the first tee and usually miss your tee shot because people are watching you, change your thinking to: “I can let go of everything outside of me by letting

it become fuzzy. I can focus clearly on seeing my target. I feel my swing tempo. I concentrate on my pre-shot routine to prepare my mind. My first tee shot is easy because I use the club in my bag with the biggest head. It is easy. I can tee it up and sweep through it. I love to hit the first shot of the day.” To reinforce these thoughts, you can prepare in advance by using mental imagery. Begin by putting yourself in a relaxed state by breathing deeply and releasing all mental and physical tension from your body. Create in detail in your mind the first hole. Mentally create the fairway, trees, bunkers, and yourself on the first tee. Notice that you are affirming your good tee shot with the messages above. Observe yourself breathing deeply to become relaxed and centered. See yourself going through your physical and mental pre-shot routine. See yourself hitting your very best tee ball (from your past experience) by visualizing and feeling your own smooth, easy, effortless swing. See the ball land on the fairway where you planned. Feel the emotion of happiness and success. Your feelings indicate what you need to notice about yourself. Become a better player by monitoring your negative thoughts that make you uneasy, anxious or tense. Know that these thoughts sabotage your performance. Use your mental energies to focus on the things within your control. You only have control over yourself because you are all you will ever have for certain.

ANIMAL HEALTH

CANINE NUTRITION

How Do I Choose a Dog Food?

A

high-quality, complete and balanced diet is important for the health and longevity of your dog. Among other benefits, a proper diet helps build strong bones, promotes healthy gums and teeth, protects immune function, and results in a lustrous haircoat. Unlike cats, which are carnivores (meaning that they must eat meat), dogs are omnivores, meaning that they can eat meat and plants as their primary food sources. A large number of dog foods are available at pet supply stores, so selecting a dog food can be daunting. How do you find a food that’s right for your dog? Start by asking your veterinarian the following: “Which food will meet the particular needs of my pet?” and “Which brand(s) do you recommend?” Most pet foods are created for different life stages, including puppy, maintenance, or senior diets. Within these life stages are even more specific categories. For example, if you own a Saint Bernard puppy, you’ll need to feed a puppy food for large-breed dogs. Large-breed puppy foods are specially formulated to meet the special requirements of large-breed puppies Before purchasing a dog food, look for a statement on the label that verifies that the food underwent AAFCO feeding trials. This means that the food was tested on animals according to guidelines from the Association of American Feed Control Officials. A label that says the food meets AAFCO standards simply means that a chemical analysis of the food appears to be complete and balanced, but the food has not been tested on animals. Because some nutrients may not be digestible when fed to animals, the feeding trial statement is a better indication of the nutritional adequacy of the food.

Do Certain Diseases Require Special Foods?

Nutrition can help slow the progression, or manage the signs, of many diseases. For dogs with kidney disease, for example, diets lower in protein have been shown to help slow disease progression. Foods with limited or hydrolyzed proteins can help reduce the itching and scratching in many allergic dogs. For dogs with osteoarthritis, many diets now contain higher levels of glucosamine and antioxidants to help reduce pain and inflammation. 70 / Our City Weston / November 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

By Miguel E. Cordova, DV

Most diets that are designed for a specific disease are prescription diets and are only available through veterinarians. If your pet has a disease or condition, consult your veterinarian for nutritional advice.

Is a Homemade or Raw Diet Okay to Feed?

The advantage of homemade diets is that they can be tailored to the specific needs of your dog. However, most homemade diets found in books or on the Internet can be too vague or too complex, and ingredient substitutions or alterations may result in a diet that is nutritionally deficient or unbalanced or is even toxic. If you really want to provide your dog with a homemade diet, it’s best to work under the guidance of a veterinary nutritionist to ensure that the diet you prepare is complete and balanced for your dog.

What Do I Need to Know About Table Scraps and Treats?

The biggest problem with table scraps and treats is that they add unnecessary calories that can make your pet overweight. Pet obesity often leads to diabetes, increased blood pressure, and orthopedic problems, all of which can reduce your dog’s life span. If your dog is overweight, consult your veterinarian about a diet and exercise plan to get your dog back to a healthy weight. In addition, many dogs are allergic to common foods, such as wheat and chicken, resulting in problems such as itchy, infected ears and skin infections.

SAFETY CORNER

Holiday Safety

T

he holiday season is quickly approaching, and the house chefs are warming up their family recipes and ovens. Home fires tend to increase during the holiday season, and The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue in Weston wants everyone to enjoy the holiday season safely. Following some important fire safety tips in your home can help keep your family safe during the holidays and throughout the year. Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and injuries. Most cooking fires occur the day before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. From baking to boiling, frying, or sautéing, following these fire safety tips while cooking will help to keep your holiday season fire safe. Always turn pot handles towards the back of the stove to prevent accidental injury. Avoid placing dish towels or pot holders near the stove to avoid them catching fire. Keep a three-foot, kid-free, safe zone away from any cooking appliance to ensure kids do not play near not surfaces.

Watch What You Heat!

A simple safety rhyme to remember is: When cooking on the stovetop – stay and watch your hot pot. If the oven is on, don’t be gone. In other words, never turn your back to the stove and stay in the kitchen while you cook. Always be prepared and have an extinguisher in easy reach. If you see smoke or fire on the stove, turn the burner off and cover the pan with a lid. Don’t try to use water or run with a flaming frying pan. Similarly, if you see smoke coming from the oven, turn it off and keep the door closed. From 2014-2018, an estimated 44% of house fires resulted from holiday decorations left too close to a heat source. These fires resulted in an annual average of 770 house fires, two deaths, 30 injuries, and 11 million dollars in property damage each year. If decorating is on your agenda this holiday season, be sure to follow these safety tips. Ensure decorations do not block any windows/doors. Check string lights to make sure cords are not worn or broken, and bulbs do not have any loose connections. Dry Christmas trees are a fire hazard, so be sure to water yours daily if you have one. Do not place any lit candles or other heat sources near a Christmas tree or anything else that can burn. Candles start more than 1/3 of fires started by decorations. Always be sure to blow out candles or consider using flameless candles as a safer alternative. Turn off all lights/ decorations when leaving your home or going to bed. Join BSO Fire Rescue Public Educators on November 17th at 6:30pm for a virtual “Holiday Safety” presentation for all ages and more information and holiday safety tips. Registration is free and available online at: https://BSOFireRescuePublicEducation.as.me/

Buttock Enhancement (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

J

ennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian started a craze for an enhanced buttock. Flat or less protruding rear ends everywhere are being surgically enhanced into more shapely curves and feminine fullness. More women everywhere are considering, or getting buttock enhancements– lifted, sculpted, or augmented. Tighter fitting clothing, such as low-cut sweats, workout pants and leotards are seen in public more often, and a more shapely feminine figure has become aesthetically more desirable. The popularity of the butt lift is not just a U.S. fashion fad. Many women desire to enhance their buttock and thigh region to create a beautiful buttock shape and the very attractive sweep of the lower back, hips and waist.

The buttock augmentation (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) is enjoying a surge in popularity, because women are unhappy with their buttocks - viewing them as too flat, too wide, or sagging. They were either born like this, or lost the form and shape of their buttocks after losing or gaining weight. Pregnancy, or just aging alone, can also affect the size, projection, and profile of the buttocks. Inability to achieve perky buttocks and sexy curves through exercise and muscle toning has frustrated health-conscious women. There are a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures available for those who desire youthful, fuller, and perky buttocks, with a more sensual body profile. These techniques vary depending on what is actually missing and what is the overall body frame and form. For example, there are many who are either genetically or by weight gain have developed “fat and wide” buttocks.

Liposculpture can shape their buttocks and the surrounding tissues to make the buttocks rounder and more proportional to the rest of the figure. On the other hand, there are those who have “flat and wide” buttocks. In addition to utilizing liposculpture to shape their waist, hips and buttocks, fat injection or grafting is used to augment the buttocks and to provide fullness and projection. Because it also helps to lift loose buttock tissue, this procedure is also referred to as a Brazilian Buttock Lift. Contrary to the above, there are some with sagging buttocks who are not a candidate for Brazilian Buttock Augmentation. These are people whose buttocks sag as a result of massive weight loss, such as after a gastric bypass surgery. These individuals would benefit from a body lift procedure which removes excess skin and helps to lift their thighs and buttocks. During your consultation, Dr. Messa will review your treatment options for buttock contouring, augmentation and enlargement. He will discuss if you are a good candidate, surgical options and techniques, potential risks and complications of surgery, pre- and post-operative instructions, as well as what to expect after surgery.

Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. To schedule your consultation with Dr. Messa, please call our office at (954) 659-7760.
