RE A
n the morning of October 8th, the Islamist group Hamas carried out one of the worst terrorist attacks in recent history. The atrocities that took place are now well known and led to an unprecedented response from the Israeli military. Finding a silver lining to such a horrible course of events is almost impossible. Like many in America, we closely followed the early days of the war and discovered the story of one selfless grandfather’s efforts to rescue his son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. Retired Israeli General Noam Tibon received a terrible phone call from his son, journalist Amir Tibon. Amir needed help. Hamas fighters had overrun his community, searching for people to take hostage or worse. Amir and his family live in Kibbutz Nahal Oz on the border of Gaza. “In every house in our community and other communities along the border with Gaza, there is a room that is built of very strong concrete that can withstand a direct hit from a mortar or a rocket,” said Amir in an interview with The Atlantic, “I’m in the room with my wife, and I hear the gunfire directly outside my window, as well as shouting.” They hid in the dark as the noise of war surrounded them. “Trust me, I will come,” Noam reassured his son, “Nobody, nobody, can stop me.” Noam then set out on perhaps the most crucial mission of his life: to save his family. He and his wife raced from Tel Aviv to Nahal Oz but had to stop to help survivors of the Nova music festival massacre. After delivering as many people as possible to a safe location away from the border, Tibon again drove toward the kibbutz where his family was hiding. Along the way, they encountered another group that needed help. Soldiers were under fire from Hamas fighters. Together with the soldiers, Noam ended the threat. Two of the soldiers, however, were wounded and needed care. Noam drove them back to where he had left his wife so the soldiers could be cared for. He then enlisted the help of another retired general, Israel Ziv. The two sixty-plus-year-old men set off again. They arrived at Nahal Oz about the same time as an Israeli paratrooper unit. They began the dangerous process of clearing the town of enemy fighters. Finally, ten hours after the ordeal started, Noam’s three-year-old granddaughter Galia heard her grandfather’s voice. “Saba higea,” she called out. “Grandfather is here.” Their family was saved. In our world’s darkest hours, remember: true heroes walk among us!

WestonNights Concert Series Caribbean Chillers Bring Jimmy Buffett Vibes to Town
T
he nineteenth season of the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series kicks off on Saturday, November 18th, with the tropical tunes of Caribbean Chillers. Immerse yourself in a tropical getaway that will whisk you away from the park to a sandy beach with steel drum rhythms and carefree melodies. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket and arrive early to pick your perfect seating area. The Caribbean Chillers SHOW is an "AUTHENTIC" recreation of what you'll hear, and experience at a Jimmy Buffett Concert and Florida's FAVORITE Jimmy Buffett Tribute Act! Get ready for the "island escapism" style of music, with hits like "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise." The Caribbean Chillers will recreate the unique feel and sound of a Jimmy Buffett's concert embodying the relaxed, tropical vibe so many know and love. The Caribbean Chillers play covers of Jimmy Buffett's most popular songs, while also trying to replicate the concert experience with the same kind of energy and atmosphere. Fans of Jimmy Buffett who might not have gotten to see the original artist live (or those who just want to relive the experience) will be thrilled to experience this FREE concert. The concert takes place from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the event stage in Weston Regional Park. A lighted playground is 22 / Our City Weston / November 2023 / OurCityMedia.com
next to the concert area where children can play before the show. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and to arrive early to pick their perfect seating location. Coolers are welcome. However, alcohol is not permitted in the park. Guests can also take advantage of the food truck offerings. There are typically three to five food trucks with an assortment of food from pizza and hamburgers to ethnic cuisine, and even something to satisfy that sweet tooth.

■ POSITIVE PARENTING
I want my child to be a happy one! www.animalhealthcenteratweston.com
with yourself. You reach happiness when you focus on these special moments rather than on those not-so-good moments. This is what we must keep in mind when we are raising our children. The children will remember and value the time we spend with them; instead of remembering a new toy, they will remember when we play with them with that toy. Instead of a big house or a fancy dinner, they will remember how enjoyable a picnic in the park was when you were with them. Of course, the children will have sad moments, they will have tantrums over a toy they wanted us to buy at the store, but we need to teach them how to express those emotions and how we deal with them by us setting the example. Even though we did not have a good day, our lives have a lot of things to be grateful for, a lot of good moments to be happy about.

et’s start by asking ourselves what happiness is. According to pshycologytoday. com “happiness is a state where we might experience personal positive emotions like contentment, ease, or joy. But we also experience prosocial positive emotions that give us a greater sense of meaning—emotions like connectedness, gratitude, and compassion…”. As we can read in this definition happiness is not related to what we have or with what we possess; happiness is related to an emotion we feel, how content we are with what we do and how we do it. Happiness is the sum of special moments we might have with our children, relatives, spouses, friends or with people you just meet during the day or just those special moments you have

Thanksgiving Day is coming, and it is the perfect opportunity to talk about this at home during a warm dinner with our family. It is the time to remember all the special moments we have had, it is the time to make them accountable and it is the time to be grateful for each of them.
Happy Thanksgiving 2023!

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING
DO I NEED A WILL, A TRUST OR BOTH? WE HEAR THIS QUESTION EVERY DAY! By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
A WILL
If you die without a will it is known as dying intestate. While many believe that their close family members “know what they want”, it doesn’t necessarily go your way without a valid will. Instead, their money and property are distributed according to Florida’s intestate succession laws, during a Probate action. In Florida, intestate succession hinges on whether a person is married and has children with their spouse. • If the decedent (one who has passed away) is married and they have children together, the spouse inherits 100 percent of the estate. • If the decedent is married and has children from a previous relationship, the spouse inherits 50 percent of the estate and their children receive the other 50 percent. But even if someone is fine with the state-imposed inheritance laws, a beneficiary will be required to go through the expensive and long process called “Probate.”. The law can only assume what you would want, but it may cause your wishes to go haywire. For instance, imagine you have been in a relationship without a formal marriage certificate for many years and love your partner dearly. If you pass without a will, that partner may not inherit according to intestacy laws. Florida places legally adopted children on the same level as biological children. But step-children will not inherit through intestacy laws.
WHAT IS A TRUST?
A basic Revocable Living Trust is a legal document that creates a relationship between you and a Trustee. You can name yourself as Trustee to manage your own assets. A Trustee will oversee and hold assets on your behalf during your lifetime and on behalf of your beneficiaries upon your passing. There are many different types of trusts such as irrevocable trusts, and a whole slew of alphabet soup trusts such as a SLAT, GRAT, or ILIT.
TRUST VS. WILL
Both trusts and wills determine who will receive your assets, yet the two remain very different. Unlike trusts, which can be used to avoid the probate process, a will cannot. Wills require probate to take effect as desired. I call a will a “Dear Judge Letter,” because a judge will need to review it, make sure it is signed correctly and contains all required elements. While wills take into effect after passing and are intended to support the wishes included in the will for the executors and heirs, trusts take effect once properly signed and are intended to have an impact both in life and in death. This means that a trust may include provisions that determine the steps that are to be taken in the case of mental or physical incapacitation.

The Building Blocks of Mental Health
T
By Dr. Maria Clemente
he World Health Organization defines good mental health “as the state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own ability, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to a make contribution to his or her own community”. Children need responsive and reliable parenting to help build the ability to trust others, to learn how to communicate honestly and effectively, to learn how to expect and offer compassion and respect and to learn how to handle disagreement and conflicts. They learn these skills by watching their parents who teach them how to develop the necessary emotional, cognitive and behavioral tools by showing them help and support. We as parents always want our children not to be distressed however a better approach would be showing
them how to be calm and present, this way we can help build Emotional Health. Identifying thoughts and feelings before acting impulsively on them.
Children develop the skills needed for healthy relationships at home. They need a consistent safe and responsive environment.
We need to keep it simple by going back to the basics to educate our kids:
We all are on the journey to build a better version of ourselves.
• We need to set clear limits for our children from an early age and adjust them as they grow. • Children need to understand what their responsibilities are in their family environment. • Education and good manners can help promote healthy communication skills and respect. • As humans we need to be connected one to another which helps us know ourselves, this is important to build our self-esteem and know our limits. • Life is not always easy and problems will always be there but there will always be help around.

Weston Music Society United Young Talents From Weston & Paraguay
O
n Sunday, October 8, 2023, the Weston Music Society hosted its Membership Appreciation Concert at the Weston Community Center. Over 125 attendees were enraptured by the talent, poise and ability of these young performers. The Rising Starz Academy brought 6 singers to open the program. They were followed by violin soloist Samuel Pallieja, who, at the age of 17, is concertmaster for the Greater Miami Youth Symphony, and is a regular performer with the non-profit baroque ensemble Camerata di Magdalena. The Amadeus Academy of Music and Art brought 5 outstanding pianists, capped by the performance of Juan Diego Molina’s rousing rendition of “Rhapsody in Blue”. The final act was unique. All the way from Paraguay, the Cateura Orchestra of Recycled Instruments demonstrated the true power of music. They were featured on a segment of “60 Minutes”. When their town became a trash dump, the citizens went
to work and created musical instruments from garbage. In existence for more than 10 years, their motto is “The world sends us garbage. We send back music”. In addition to such favorites as “The Girl from Ipanema,” they performed a song about a train trip featuring a harp made out of wood, an oil can, swing wire and sockets, accompanied by the entire ensemble playing on their recycled string, wind and brass instruments. It was a joy to behold! Lou Marett, WMS President, noted, “Favio Chavez, the Cateura Orchestra founder, director and conductor, wants the world to focus not on the poverty of Cateura but on the redemption, love, and hope music provides”. Diane Marett, WMS Co-Vice President of Events, summed it up well. “How wonderful it was to see the large turnout which filled the room to capacity at our event! An audience of all ages came out to enjoy the music. We hope to bring many more events like this to our community.”

T
Renaissance on the Water: The Transformation Pier Sixty-Six
he steady state of development in Fort Lauderdale is no more evident than on the Intracoastal Waterway near the port. The Broward County Convention Center expansion project is well underway and will feature a new Omni Hotel, the Disney Cruise Terminal, and 1.2 million square feet of exhibition space. What is less understood is what is happening on the other side of the waterway at the iconic Pier 66 property. For more than 60 years, Pier Sixty-Six has been a monumental property in Fort Lauderdale. With its iconic spiretopped tower and its location at the junction of the 17th Street Causeway and Intracoastal Waterway, the property has welcomed celebrities, honeymooners and virtually all of the world’s greatest yachts. Pier Sixty-Six was originally a fuel dock and gas station that was opened in the 1950s by Phillips 66 Petroleum. The resort was later built in the 1960s by legendary developer Richard McLaughlin. He played a pivotal role in its transformation from a fuel dock to the iconic luxury hotel and marina complex that became synonymous with the upscale side of Fort Lauderdale in the mid-20th century. Under McLaughlin's vision and leadership, Pier 66 became a renowned destination and a testament to its time's innovative architectural and development practices. Over time the property became stagnant and in
disrepair, resulting, ultimately in the closing of the iconic hotel. Tavistock Purchase British Billionaire Joe Lewis’ Tavistock Development Company acquired Pier 66 Hotel & Marina, along with the neighboring Sails Marina, in late 2016. The acquisition marked a significant move by Tavistock into the South Florida real estate and hospitality scene. They announced plans to revitalize and enhance the iconic waterfront property while respecting its historic value to the Fort Lauderdale community. Tavistock has “reimagined” Pier Sixty-Six as Fort Lauderdale’s “social harbor.” A destination where those seeking relaxation and refuge, engaging events and alluring amenities, and an approachable marine and resort lifestyle all come together. The new-look property will retain the iconic Pier 66 tower, including the Top of the Marina Lounge with its rotating views of Fort Lauderdale along with the Atlantic Ocean. It will also offer luxury condominium homes. The resorts’ plans evoke images of Mediterranean-style luxury resorts from exotic locales like Ibiza. Pier 66 Resort Set to open in late 2024, Pier SixtySix Resort will up the bar in luxury living in Fort Lauderdale. Each of the property’s 325 rooms will boast a timeless design with modern luxury touches. The

resort will include a 15,000-square-foot spa, state-of-the-art Fitness Center, dynamic multi-level pool, more than 40,000 square feet of entertainment and meeting space, a marina promenade and one of the largest superyacht marinas on the eastern seaboard, Pier Sixty-Six will introduce 12 restaurants and lounges including several signature restaurants along the newly built waterfront promenade. The property will feature concepts from local and internationally acclaimed chefs. Most notably will be the restoration of the iconic rotating Pier Top lounge, admired for decades for being the only 17th-floor observation deck showing 360-degree panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, and Downtown Fort Lauderdale. The glamorous social bar and lounge will come to life with a bird's eye view in an energetic and lively setting. Residences Pier Sixty-Six will include 92 luxury two-to-four-bedroom condominiums situated in four buildings within the property. Tavistock began sales of residences in its initial tower, Azul last year and initiated sales at its Indigo Condominium Residences at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last month. “There’s truly nothing like Pier Sixty-Six Residences on the Eastern Seaboard,” says Craig Collin, chief operating officer at Tavistock Development Company. “Offering owners a unique collection of sophisticated residences, a world-class marina, and premier resort amenities, The Residences at Pier Sixty-Six will be one of the finest marine communities in the world. Our transformation of Pier Sixty-Six will create a cornerstone gateway to Fort Lauderdale, reinvigorating Pier Sixty-Six’s status as a landmark destination.” The new Pier Sixty-Six will undoubtedly change the dynamic at the south end of Fort Lauderdale Beach. The combination of ultra-luxury residences, a high-end resort, with an integrated marina that is able to accommodate the largest yachts in the world, and what is sure to be the city’s trendiest cocktail lounge will put the place back at the top of Fort Lauderdale’s elite social scene.

Pizza Lovers is an Italian restaurant with a simple and warm ambiance, its culinary offerings include the most authentic flavors of homemade Italian cuisine. ■ ASK THE SHERIFF
T
BSO – RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE
he Broward Sheriff's Office has recently garnered national and international recognition for exceptional performance across all aspects of our public safety operations. These awards and accolades indeed boost our morale but, more importantly — exemplify our organization's commitment to excellence in service. This past year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) presented BSO SWAT operators with one of its highest honors: The FBI Shield of Bravery. These highly trained tactical operators pulled two FBI agents from the line of fire. Though the agents tragically sustained fatal injuries, the SWAT operators performed remarkably in the face of grave danger to save their lives. The award they received is rarely issued and bestowed only for acts of exceptional heroism, well above the call of duty. The award is an unwavering testament to our training and preparedness, and seeing these dedicated first responders receive this supreme honor was one of my proudest moments as sheriff. As an organization, we also realize the benefits of safeguarding our communities through proactive and intelligence-led policing. Recently named Gang Unit of the Year for their detection and prevention of substantial

illicit activity by the Florida Gang Investigators Association, the BSO Gang Investigations Task Force is significantly reducing crime throughout Broward County. Every accolade we receive is significant to the progress our organization is making. BSO Sergeant Eric Girado was recognized as the Investigator of the Year by the Florida Internal Affairs Investigator Association. Sgt. Girado's recognition is a strong endorsement of our commitment to responsible, transparent policing of ourselves. Since assuming command of the organization, my administration has focused on maintaining the highest standards of accountability, ensuring that any allegations of misconduct against employees are investigated fairly, thoroughly and objectively. BSO's Neighborhood Support Team received well-deserved recognition as the Outstanding Crime Prevention Unit of the Year by the Florida Crime Prevention Association. The community initiatives launched by this exceptional team have helped support our residents while building trust and respect and keeping them informed on important public safety matters. In October 2023, Dr. James Roach received the State Medical Director of the Year Award from the Florida Department of Health at the EMS Awards Ceremony. The Raymond H.

Alexander - EMS Medical Direction Award is a prestigious honor and a testament to Dr. Roach's outstanding contributions to our organization and emergency medical services. Also in October, the BSO Fire Rescue and Emergency Services Advanced Life Saving (ALS) team excelled, winning an award at a competition. The team's dedication and expertise highlight its commitment to excellence in EMS. Our efforts to communicate with and inform our community of critical public safety matters extend to a variety of digital mediums. This year, our Community Affairs Division and Public Information Office won three Telly Awards, a premier award honoring excellence in video and television productions. The videos awarded highlight critical public safety information and, in one instance, assisted the BSO Cold Case Unit in highlighting a decades-old unsolved homicide case. The achievements highlighted here share a common purpose—all are a product of our promise and commitment to be the most progressive, innovative and service-oriented public safety organization protecting the residents and visitors of Broward County. We are proud of each of these distinguished honors and will continue to push forward with the same vigor to reach even higher levels of performance and accomplishment.

IMAGINE YOUR DAY WITHOUT GLASSES OR CONTACTS By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician
O
rthokeratology (Ortho-k) is a revolutionary non-surgical procedure that eliminates the need for daytime glasses or contact lenses. You just wear the specially fitted lenses at bedtime. They improve your vision by gently reshaping your cornea while you sleep, like Invisalign for your eyes. When you awake, you will have clear, sharp, natural vision for your waking hours. It is FDA approved for children as well as adults. Ortho-K is a great choice for anyone who wants to see clearly without daytime glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. It’s also perfect for people with lifestyles where glasses or contacts may be inconvenient, like athletes, and people with allergies or dry eye. Ortho-K is a fantastic alternative for teenagers since LASIK is not recommended for anyone under 21 years of age or for those who are not stable in prescription. In addition, Ortho-K has been clinically proven to slow down or even stop the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. This is a safe and effective alternative treatment to LASIK that can correct near-sightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism,
52 / Our City Weston / November 2023 / OurCityMedia.com
and presbyopia (blurred near vision when you’re over 40 years old). Children are great candidates for Ortho-K. The number of children that are becoming myopic (nearsighted) has been growing rapidly over the last 25 years. The rapid increase is due in part to children spending more time studying, reading, and using the computer and handheld devices. When a person cannot see clearly, it is because their eye is too long, or too short, or the surface is misshaped. These images fail to reach or focus on the retina. This produces blurred or distorted vision. In order to create a therapeutic lens, the surface of your eyes is mapped using a high-tech instrument called a corneal topographer. GIVING THANKS: FINDING GRATITUDE IN EVERY HOME
R
eal estate isn't just about properties, transactions, and market trends; it's about the spaces we inhabit, the places we call home, and the communities we build. As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, let's take a moment to explore the ways in which our homes and community inspire a sense of gratitude that goes far beyond bricks and stucco.
The Roof Over Our Heads: A Place of Comfort and Security
Our homes are the sanctuaries where we find a sense of security. It's within these walls that we create memories, share laughter, and find solace. Our homes are the backdrop to countless stories, from childhood memories to cherished moments spent with loved ones. This Thanksgiving, let's be thankful for the comfort and protection that our homes provide, recognizing that not everyone is as fortunate.

Investment and Wealth Building: Building a Brighter Future
Real Estate offers opportunities for financial growth and stability. For many, owning property is a cornerstone of their investment portfolios, a means of accumulating wealth, and a safeguard for retirement. It's a tangible asset that will appreciate over time, providing a source of income and a sense of financial security. This Thanksgiving, give thanks for the doors that real estate investment has opened and the potential it holds to build a brighter future for ourselves and the generational wealth of our families.
Community and Connection: Weston, The Neighborhood We Cherish
Real estate isn't just about the four walls of our homes; it extends to the greater community that we are a part of. Especially in the City of Weston, our neighbors become our friends, our children's playmates, and our support systems. The local businesses, parks, and schools that surround us become integral parts of our lives. In this season of thanks, let's celebrate the sense of belong-

ing that real estate fosters, the bonds we form with our neighbors, and the vibrant communities that make our lives richer.
Gratitude
In this season of giving thanks, let's not overlook the vital role that real estate plays in our lives. From the comfort of our homes to the potential for financial stability, from the sense of community to the opportunities for growth, real estate touches every aspect of our existence. So, as we gather around the Thanksgiving table this year, let's take a moment to express gratitude for our homes, our community, and the countless ways our lives are enriched.

Stay Safe During the Holidays: ESSENTIAL FIRE SAFETY TIPS By Todd E. Draizin District Chief
T
he holiday season is a time of joy, warmth, and togetherness. However, it’s also a time when the risk of home fires increases. With festive lights, candles, and elaborate decorations, the holidays pose unique fire hazards that can quickly turn celebrations into disasters. Follow these essential fire safety tips to help ensure your holidays are happy and safe.
1. Be Cautious with Candles
Candles are popular for holiday décor, but they can be dangerous if left unattended. Keep candles away from flammable items such as curtains. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Consider using flameless LED candles as a safer alternative, especially if you have children or pets.
2. Check Your Lights
Inspect your holiday lights for proper use, indoor vs outdoor, frayed wires, broken sockets, and damaged plugs before hanging them. Replace any faulty strands to avoid electrical fires. Additionally, never overload electrical outlets or use damaged extension cords. Unplug decorative lights before leaving the house or going to sleep.
3. Mindful Cooking
Cooking is a significant part of holiday celebrations. Stay vigilant while cooking, and never leave the stove or oven unattended. Keep flammable items away from the cooking area, like kitchen towels and wooden utensils. Use a metal lid or pan to smother the flames in case of a grease fire. Never use water, as it can make the fire worse.
4. Decorate Safely
When decorating your home, be mindful of where you place items. Avoid blocking exits with decorations, as this can hinder your escape in case of a fire. Keep decorations, especially those made of paper or other flammable materials, away from heat sources.
5. Have an Escape Plan
Prepare and discuss a fire escape plan with your family. Identify two ways out of every room and establish a meeting point outside. Practice the escape plan with all family members, especially children, so everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire.
6. Smoke Alarms and Fire Extinguishers
Ensure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms on every level, including inside and outside sleeping areas. Test alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year. Keep fire extinguishers in key areas of your home, such as the kitchen and garage, and learn how to use them effectively. Following these simple yet crucial fire safety tips, you can protect your loved ones and your home during the holiday season. Stay vigilant, stay safe, and enjoy a festive and secure holiday season! 56 / Our City Weston / November 2023 / OurCityMedia.com

The Palace at Weston's Mini-Walk Raises Over $10,000 for Alzheimer's Awareness
n a heartwarming display of community solidarity, The Palace at Weston recently joined forces with the Alzheimer's Association to organize a Mini-Walk event that left a lasting impact on all who attended. This event served as a powerful reminder of the strength that unity and commitment can bring to the ongoing fight against Alzheimer's disease, a condition that currently affects over 6 million Americans. The event's highlight featured an appearance by the esteemed Margaret Brown, Mayor of Weston, who took a moment to issue an official proclamation acknowledging The Palace's unwavering dedication to Alzheimer's awareness. This gesture of recognition underscored the importance of raising awareness and working together as a community to combat this devastating disease.

Adding a burst of excitement to the day were the Miami Heat Dancers and the beloved mascot, Burnie, who infused the Walk with boundless energy and enthusiasm, motivating all participants. The event was also graced by stilt walkers and a lively DJ, ensuring that everyone had a memorable and enjoyable experience. The most remarkable aspect of the event, however, was the overwhelming response from the community. Hundreds of enthusiastic participants and supporters turned up to show their solidarity and make generous contributions. Together, they managed to raise an impressive sum of over $10,000 for the Alzheimer's Association, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against Alzheimer's disease. The Mini-Walk event organized by The Palace at Weston serves as a shining example of how a community can come together, embrace a noble cause, and make a meaningful impact. As we continue to raise awareness and work towards finding a cure for Alzheimer's, events like these remind us that unity, dedication, and a shared commitment can truly make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease. IMPINGEMENT SYNDROMES IN DANCERS Title By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
By
P
ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes Rest, Physical Therapy, and Anti-Inflammatory Medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with Arthroscopic Surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical Therapy and a short course of Anti-Inflammatory Medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and Arthroscopic Surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment!

The Power of TitleImagination
on the Golf Course By
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

hile some golfers have more athletic ability than others, every person can benefit from using mental skills to improve their lives and their golf games. Some of the organizational skills for quality of life and improved golf are: goal setting, making good conscious choices, adopting positive attitudes and beliefs, relaxation techniques, decision making, and enjoying life/golf in the moment. Every time you repeat a limiting belief such as one of these, you give it more power in your mind. In golf, as in life, what you think is what you create. Begin to question your beliefs. Is this what you really want to create? Use your awesome power of imagination to practice in your mind what you really want to happen. When you hear yourself reiterating a negative thought from your past, change the thought in your mind to a positive one. Golfers play golf because it is a challenge. Challenge yourself to change your beliefs and behavior to achieve the success you desire. Use the feeling that comes up as a cue for you to know whether your concerns are under your control, or out of your control. If you are worried about people or course conditions that you cannot control, replace your limiting thoughts with positive, constructive ones. For example, if you are anxious on the first tee and usually miss your tee shot because people are watching you, change your thinking to: “I can let go of everything outside of me by letting
▸
it become fuzzy. I can focus clearly on seeing my target. I feel my swing tempo. I concentrate on my pre-shot routine to prepare my mind. My first tee shot is easy because I use the club in my bag with the biggest head. It is easy. I can tee it up and sweep through it. I love to hit the first shot of the day.” To reinforce these thoughts, you can prepare in advance by using mental imagery. Begin by putting yourself in a relaxed state by breathing deeply and releasing all mental and physical tension from your body. Create in detail in your mind the first hole. Mentally create the fairway, trees, bunkers, and yourself on the first tee. Notice that you are affirming your good tee shot with the messages above. Observe yourself breathing deeply to become relaxed and centered. See yourself going through your physical and mental pre-shot routine. See yourself hitting your very best tee ball (from your past experience) by visualizing and feeling your own smooth, easy, effortless swing. See the ball land on the fairway where you planned. Feel the emotion of happiness and success. Your feelings indicate what you need to notice about yourself. Become a better player by monitoring your negative thoughts that make you uneasy, anxious or tense. Know that these thoughts sabotage your performance. Use your mental energies to focus on the things within your control. You only have control over yourself because you are all you will ever have for certain.

CANINE NUTRITION
How Do I Choose a Dog Food? By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
A
high-quality, complete and balanced diet is important for the health and longevity of your dog. Among other benefits, a proper diet helps build strong bones, promotes healthy gums and teeth, protects immune function, and results in a lustrous haircoat. Unlike cats, which are carnivores (meaning that they must eat meat), dogs are omnivores, meaning that they can eat meat and plants as their primary food sources. A large number of dog foods are available at pet supply stores, so selecting a dog food can be daunting. How do you find a food that’s right for your dog? Start by asking your veterinarian the following: “Which food will meet the particular needs of my pet?” and “Which brand(s) do you recommend?” Most pet foods are created for different life stages, including puppy, maintenance, or senior diets. Within these life stages are even more specific categories. For example, if you own a Saint Bernard puppy, you’ll need to feed a puppy food for large-breed dogs. Large-breed puppy foods are specially formulated to meet the special requirements of large-breed puppies Before purchasing a dog food, look for a statement on the label that verifies that the food underwent AAFCO feeding trials. This means that the food was tested on animals according to guidelines from the Association of American Feed Control Officials. A label that says the food meets AAFCO standards simply means that a chemical analysis of the food appears to be complete and balanced, but the food has not been tested on animals. Because some nutrients may not be digestible when fed to animals, the feeding trial statement is a better indication of the nutritional adequacy of the food.
Do Certain Diseases Require Special Foods?
Nutrition can help slow the progression, or manage the signs, of many diseases. For dogs with kidney disease, for example, diets lower in protein have been shown to help slow disease progression. Foods with limited or hydrolyzed proteins can help reduce the itching and scratching in many allergic dogs. For dogs with osteoarthritis, many diets now contain higher levels of glucosamine and antioxidants to help reduce pain and inflammation. 68 / Our City Weston / November 2023
Most diets that are designed for a specific disease are prescription diets and are only available through veterinarians. If your pet has a disease or condition, consult your veterinarian for nutritional advice.
Is a Homemade or Raw Diet Okay to Feed?
The advantage of homemade diets is that they can be tailored to the specific needs of your dog. However, most homemade diets found in books or on the Internet can be too vague or too complex, and ingredient substitutions or alterations may result in a diet that is nutritionally deficient or unbalanced or is even toxic. If you really want to provide your dog with a homemade diet, it’s best to work under the guidance of a veterinary nutritionist to ensure that the diet you prepare is complete and balanced for your dog.
What Do I Need to Know About Table Scraps and Treats?
The biggest problem with table scraps and treats is that they add unnecessary calories that can make your pet overweight. Pet obesity often leads to diabetes, increased blood pressure, and orthopedic problems, all of which can reduce your dog’s life span. If your dog is overweight, consult your veterinarian about a diet and exercise plan to get your dog back to a healthy weight. In addition, many dogs are allergic to common foods, such as wheat and chicken, resulting in problems such as itchy, infected ears and skin infections.

DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH
D
By State Representative Robin Bartleman
uring November, we recognize Diabetes Awareness Month as a time to raise awareness about diabetes and educate citizens about some of the challenges faced. Diabetes, a chronic condition that impacts how our bodies process blood sugar, affects 37 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds. Blood glucose, or blood sugar, is the body’s main source of energy and comes mainly from one’s diet. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps the glucose in the blood get into the cells to be used for energy. Another hormone, glucagon, works with insulin to control blood glucose levels. This year, I cosponsored HB 967, a bill that ensures Medicaid coverage of contin-
uous glucose monitors. Since being made law, the Agency for Health Care Administration is now required to cover CGMs for Medicaid recipients. This now allows diabetic patients to no longer worry about a significant financial obligation and helps them focus more on healthier habits. There are two primary types of diabetes – type 1 and type 2. A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) automatically tracks blood glucose levels, allowing a person to see their glucose level anytime at a glance. It can also review how glucose changes over a few hours or days to see trends. Seeing glucose levels in real-time can help a diabetic make more informed decisions throughout the day about how to balance food, physical activity, and medicines.

Considering the large impact of the disease, it is a priority for me to support the ongoing funding of resources to combat diabetes. For more information about this disease from the American Diabetes Association, visit diabetes.org or call their hotline: 1-800-342-2383.
