Creating a Birth Plan by Sarah Lyons

The birth of a baby is one of the most exciting and important life events that a woman will have. Each birth is unique, just as each mother is different. Families will have specific preferences they would like to be part of their big day. Creating a birth plan is a great way to make sure the doctor, parents, extended family, and medical staff are all on the same page. Stacey Cook, a Registered Nurse at Saint Luke’s South Birth and Women’s Center in Overland Park says, “A birth plan helps you feel prepared and gives you a sense of control. It also gives your doctor and nurses a clear picture of your wishes for the birth of your baby.” In order to start your birth plan, ask yourself the following questions and discuss them with your partner: ■■Do you want to deliver in a hospital, in a birthing

center, or in your home?

■■Do you have any medical history that the nurses

should be aware of, such as group B strep, Rh incompatibility, gestational diabetes, or drug allergies? ■■Do you plan to breastfeed or bottle feed? Would you like to incorporate skin to skin immediately after birth? 6

Our Kids Magazine | BabyTots 2017

■■Do you plan to use medication during labor? What

other pain management techniques would you like to try? Shower, bath, exercise ball, music, focal points, massage, or different positions? Does the birthing facility offer these options? ■■Do you want a delayed cord clamping if possible? Do you want to save the cord blood? Does your partner wish to cut the cord himself? ■■Who will be present? Just your partner? Will you have a doula? What about grandparents, friends, aunts and uncles, or older siblings? ■■What preferences do you have for infant care? When to feed? Where to sleep? Will you offer a pacifier? ■■Will baby receive standard medications and vaccines? ■■If you need a Cesarean, do you have any preferences? Once you have answered these questions, you have most likely determined what you would or would not like to have happen during your birthing experience. Armed with this information, you can start to create your birth plan. Here are some tips:

Discuss with doctor

Talk with your doctor about what a typical birth

looks like for her. Your doctor has attended medical school and has likely delivered hundreds of babies so they may be able to give you an idea of how things will go and what you can expect. If your plan differs greatly from the doctor’s plan, discuss this and come up with a plan that works for both of you. Having this discussion in advance can eliminate frustration during the birthing process.

Visit the hospital

Most hospitals offer tours of the birthing facility. These often include spending time in an empty room to get acquainted with the space and help you decide on any other preferences you may want in your birth plan. Ask the hospital staff if pain management items like exercise balls, Jacuzzi tubs, or massage are available. Also ask if the baby will stay in a nursery or in the room with you. What will you prefer?

Start early

It can take some time to get your birth plan together, so it is best to start on it early so you can feel confident it is ready when baby arrives. Even if this is not your first baby, you will still want to have a birth plan in place because you will have new nurses assisting with your delivery. Make sure your plan is easy to read and highlights the most important aspects that you wish for during the birth of your child. With your plan in place, you will feel more prepared for the big day. “The best tip to remember is that a birth plan is simply that. A plan. It’s important to realize that many things can go differently than you anticipated and you can change your mind regarding what you previously wanted. A safe and healthy mom and baby is the ultimate goal for you and your health care providers.” says Cook.

5 Tips for Choosing a Pediatrician By Sarah Lyons

Your child’s doctor plays an important role in their life and, therefore, you will need to find one that is a good fit for the parents and the child. It can be challenging to find a pediatrician who is the right fit for your family. Here are some tips to get you started on your search:

Cover the basics

First you must compare your list of candidates with your insurance policy. “I look to see what providers are in our network, then start looking for reviews of those doctors online. I was able to find a doctor that was better than we ever expected.” says Stephanie Beaurdry, Texas mom of two. Check to see if the doctor is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. This means the doctor has passed a specialized test in pediatrics. If you choose a family doctor, ask if the doctor is certified in the American Board of Family Medicine. Family doctors are trained to treat patients of all ages, including children, but they do not have a specialty in pediatrics. Next, consider the basic office information that can be found online or with a quick phone call. What are the office hours? Do they have walk-in hours? Will

8

Our Kids Magazine | BabyTots 2017

the doctor visit the hospital where you will deliver your baby? What hospital will your child be admitted to if needed? Is the office location conveniently to your home, work, school, and daycare? Take these things into consideration as you narrow down your list.

Visit the office

To find out if you feel comfortable in the pediatrician›s office, you will have to take a tour. Call the office and ask if they have times set up for potential patients to come and visit the office or if you would need to make an appointment and ask if you can interview the doctor at the same time. Remember to ask if there is a charge for visiting. Verify with your insurance company to see if the cost would be covered or if you would be responsible for the fees. When visiting the office, be aware of what the overall environment feels like. Take into consideration whether the office staff is courteous, polite, and willing to help. Is the office clean and inviting? Was parking convenient? Do they have separate sick and well waiting areas? Take all of these things into consideration in your decision. If you plan to visit more than one office, be sure to take notes for later consideration.

Bedside Manner How the doctor interacts with your child will have a lot of impact on your choice. Do you feel comfortable around the doctor? Does your child? Are they willing to take the time to listen to your questions and concerns? A good bedside manner can go a long way towards making you and your child feel comfortable. Finding the right pediatrician can be overwhelming. But always keep in mind that your decision does not have to be permanent. “It’s important to recognize you are not stuck with your decision. You see your pediatrician a lot in those first months and if there is something really bothering you, it’s okay to switch.” says Becky Baldridge Olathe, KS mom. The parent’s goal is the same as the pediatrician, a happy and healthy child. When you find a doctor that is a good fit for your family, you can all work together to reach this goal.

Preparing for Kindergarten By Alexa Bigwarfe

The summer has passed by more quickly than you thought, and now you may be panicking because you are sending a child to kindergarten. Are they ready? Are you ready? Kindergarten is one of the largest milestones in a young child’s life, and you want to ensure that you and your child both transition smoothly. Summers McBride graciously answered some questions about preparing for the big start to school. As a kindergarten teacher, she offers important insight and suggestions for making the jump to kindergarten. 1. What are the 3-5 MOST important things a parent can do to prepare their child for kindergarten (in the month before school starts?) Before school begins, you could visit the school and take a tour- visit the important places, kindergarten hall, cafeteria, playground, etc. Practice getting in and out of car seats so that the car line will be less stressful when starting your day. Visit the bus stop and talk about the procedures for riding the bus. Have your child practice writing their name with a pencil. Practice counting objects and counting aloud. And most importantly, read books daily and 10

Our Kids Magazine | BabyTots 2017

ask questions as you read the books. There are simple things you can do to help develop pre-reading skills while reading together. A few examples are: pointing to each word on the page as you read, having your child point to the words as you read, asking how many words are on a page. 2. Where do you see parents putting a lot of unnecessary effort? I think we are all guilty of this, but worrying too much about things that don’t truly matter. Things like having to have the perfect outfits, shoes, hair styles, lunch boxes, and sparkly school supplies. ** Additionally, do not panic if your children do not know their letters, numbers, or are not reading. Children will be assessed prior to school and placed appropriately. There is a large variation in skill level for children entering school for the first year, but by the end of the year, your child will be caught up to where they need to be to enter first grade. 3. Do you have any advice or tips for a first time Kindergarten parent? Trust and talk with your child’s teacher often. We

love your children just like they are our own and we truly want the best for each and every child in our classroom. Keep the morning goodbye short, sweet, and positivesome students are very anxious the first few days and it is very encouraging for the students if you remain calm and upbeat. Just as you know, the children are able to sense when a parent is stressed or sad.

6. Any other tips or pointers for moms and dads? Just try not to worry and if you have any questions, thoughts, concerns feel free to talk to your child’s teacher. I am huge on communication and being on the same page with parents so that things are kept consistent for children. Having great communication helps everyone involved.

4. Can you recommend any good books that can help prepare mom and dad for the first week? The best children’s book I know is The Night Before Kindergarten. Otherwise, I think books for parents would vary depending on the kind of child.

Other tips for once the school year starts: Bring a snack when you pick your child up from school. Many of the kindergartners eat lunch very early, so by the end of the day, they are very hungry. Be prepared for homework. Yes, in kindergarten. Many schools give daily homework, even to the kindergartners. Plan for rest time. School is going to wear them out. Especially those children who have never been in an all-day program or are still used to taking a nap. Good luck as you begin this very exciting and sometimes scary adventure into education. Remember these tips and try to enjoy it!

5. What are some great ideas if parents want to bring in a gift for their teacher the first week? The biggest gift is having support and knowing that you have parents to help you. But for the parents who aren’t able to help out in class I know they like to show their support/love other ways. So for me, the worst part of preparing for my day is making lunch. When a parent offers to bring me lunch that is a wonderful gift. Coffee is great too! As far as a present, I can’t speak for all teachers but things we can use in the classroom are very helpful: pens, stationary, tissues, Clorox wipes, hand soap, etc

Alexa Bigwarfe is the mother of three young children and a freelance children. She writes about her experiences through motherhood and is particularly familiar with this topic as she prepares her middle child for kindergarten in the fall.

10 TIPS TO PUT A BIT ON BAD BITING HABITS By Denise Morrison Yearian

Young children bite for a variety of reasons – teething, feeling frustrated, seeking attention, looking for a reaction, or just exploring their world. With a little guidance, however, the behavior can stop. Here are 10 tips to help:

1. Address it immediately.

1/4 1/4page page July Finder July2017 2017Pre-School Pre-School Finder

When he bites another person, explain in simple terms that biting hurts and is unacceptable. Be calm and loving but firm.

2. Resist retaliation. Don’t bite back; children learn by imitation and this only reinforces the behavior.

3. Try time out. Remove him to a time out area to calm down. In general, allow one minute per the child’s age. Shorter times can be effective but longer ones may create more frustration and be counterproductive.

4. Help him articulate emotions. If your child seems frustrated, angry, fearful or overwhelmed, attach words to what he is feeling so he can communicate it to you in the future.

5. Find alternative behaviors. If he is frustrated or angry, suggest other ways to express his emotions, such as hugging a stuffed animal or hitting a pillow.

6. Redirect his attention. If biting is due to boredom or excitability, redirect him to a

positive, engaging activity, such as reading a book, coloring or playing a game.

7. Address basic needs. Watch for signals that he is tired, hungry or not feeling well and meet those needs before his behavior spirals out of control. Moreover, if he is teething, provide a cool teething ring or cloth to bite into to relieve tender gums.

9. Consider change. Children who are experiencing a change in life or routines (i.e. new baby, new home, new setting) may resort to biting for attention. If so, be proactive by giving your child plenty of attention, so he doesn’t resort to biting. If the behavior continues, consider a different setting.

10. Seek professional help.

8. Prepare for transitions.

If biting continues past the age of 4 or 5, address it with your pediatrician or behavioral specialist.

Before going into a new situation, tell your child what to expect so he doesn’t get overwhelmed.

-- Denise Morrison Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazine, educator and the mother of three children and two grandchildren.

Sing to Your Baby: Music and Brain Development

The sweet interaction between a mother and her baby when the mother sings to the infant is a universal behavior. And researchers now know that this simple, most natural activity is mutually beneficial to both mother and child. Singing provides the sensory stimulation that helps baby to focus attention which enables learning, and the mother feels empowered as she creates a positive bond with her baby.

Benefits of Musical Experiences But studies are showing that a broad array of musical experiences can build connections in the brains of young children aged 0-6 and that these connections are vitally important for later learning of all kinds. Incorporating music into the fabric of your daily family life can bring social and educational benefits to your children in surprising ways. ■■Soft music can calm and soothe children - from fussy

babies to high-strung older children - serving as a stress-reducer. ■■Music can help children focus attention, a necessary skill in any learning process. ■■Hearing music and responding to it accelerates brain development, especially in language acquisition, reading and math skills. ■■Music provides healthy ways to interact with others, both adults and peers. ■■Moving to music builds motor skills and allows healthy self-expression. ■■Music interactions build memory skills. ■■Music provides a vehicle for the expression of many emotions, especially joy.

Early Brain Development

Neuroscientists now believe that crucial brain

development takes place in the early years between ages 0-6. These years offer a window of opportunity to build connections in the brain that will serve the child throughout a lifetime. New connections are made in the brain based on what the child sees, hears and touches. Music is a key way to introduce new learning experiences to your child in both fun and productive ways. We now know that children who engage in musical activities from birth to age six have a head start on social competence, cognitive skills and emotional well-being. Besides, music is fun!

Here are some games and activities to bring more music into the culture of your family life: ■■Play music for babies and toddlers. Encourage them

to sway, bounce, clap and otherwise respond to the rhythms. ■■Make up songs as you go about your daily routines. They might relate to bath or nap times, meal times or play times. “It’s time for your bath, bath, bath,” to the tune of a favorite song. ■■Sing familiar songs and insert silly words. “Mary had a little ____.” ■■Play music and provide household items or simple rhythm instruments for your children to play.

Christ Our Savior Daycare Marisol Zavala Director

■■Learn songs to sing together as a family. These work

wonders during commute times in the car.

■■Sing “movement” songs to build simple dance

routines. “Wiggle, hop and turn around.”

Have fun with music because “In the first six years of life, a child’s brain develops more and faster than at any other time in life. The early experiences a child has—the things seen, heard and touched, stimulate the brain and forming connections. Healthy brain development establishes a child’s social competence, cognitive skills and positive emotional well-being.” (Quote from clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany) Let music of all kinds form a backdrop to your daily family life. Have some musical fun with your kids and build their brainpower. Jan Pierce, M.Ed., is a freelance writer specializing in education, parenting and family life topics.
