Bonding With Kids Through

Ol’ School Summer

Magazine

Back in 2008 I suggested that parents introduce their kids to something I called an Ol’ School Summer. Well, I am making this suggestion once again. During an Ol’ School Summer you introduce your kids to some of the activities you enjoyed during your summer vacation. You might share withMagazine them some of the current events of that day such as popular dances, songs, singing groups and any other happenings that might have seemed exciting to you then. Who knows this may be just the thing to open the lines of communication especially if you are sharing with pre-teens and teens. Be prepared for your kids to laugh and seem a little embarrassed, especially if you shareMagazine by doing the most popular dances or sing the top 10 songs. To help get you started, here are some of the games and activities I enjoyed: tag, hide-and-go-seek, marbles, hop-scotch, four-square or two-square, Simon says, Old Maids, Go Fish, Twister, jacks, fiddle sticks (later known as pick-up sticks), pantomime shows, making pop-guns out of busted water hoses and then searching for Chinaberries for ammunition, making slingshots. After we made the slingshots and popguns we would have a contest to see whose Chinaberry went the farthest or whose pebble went the greatest distance. While your list may be somewhat different from mine, hopefully it will provide you with ideas or even bring back to your memory some of the activities you enjoyed back in the day. I cannot think of a better way to bond and have fun with your kids this summer, however, you might not want to tell them that back in the day we really did have a three-month summer break.

Inside This Issue This month’s issue of Our Kids is sure to provide you with a wealth of information, everything from the benefits of “Raising a Bilingual Child,” to tips on “Parenting a Troubled Child” and so much more. Looking for things to do this month? Check out our calendar. Happy reading!

Fireworks Safety Tips With 4th of July celebrations come fireworks. While it is suggested that San Antonians not shoot fireworks in their neighborhoods, many often do. What follows are some fireworks safety tips provided by USA.gov that hopefully will help San Antonians have an accident-free celebration. Before setting off fireworks in your neighborhood, ensure that it is legal to do so. Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass. Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby before setting off fireworks. Ensure that you know how to operate the fire extinguisher properly.

Family and Faith Outrank Work Among Americans in “Reader’s Digest” Happiness Poll NEW YORK, NY– Americans are turning to family and faith and place less importance on work to find happiness, according to a new global poll conducted by Reader’s Digest. The survey asked readers around the world to rank the most important factor to their happiness: community, family, faith or work. Compared to other countries, Americans ranked among the lowest in the importance of work to their happiness and ranked the highest in regards to the importance faith has on their happiness. More than 6,800 readers in 10 countries participated in the survey, with results available online at www.RD.com for United States readers and in the June issue of the magazine’s international editions. The Reader’s Digest global happiness poll was conducted online in the United States, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia and Slovenia. In every country, on average, family was seen as the most important component for happiness. In fact, it was ranked number one by almost three-quarters of respondents (71 percent). Faith came in a distant number two (16 percent) across all countries, except in Brazil and the United States, where about a third of respondents in each country named it as top priority (26 percent and 33 percent, respectively). Work ranked number three (7 percent) and community took the last spot in the survey (2 percent). “The poll reinforces the idea that success in the workplace doesn’t always equate to happiness. The connection of success in work to a happy life seems to have been left by the 10

Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks. Stand several feet away from lit fireworks. If a device does not go off, do not stand over it to investigate it. Put it out with water and dispose of it. Always read the directions and warning labels on fireworks. If it is not marked with the contents, directions and a warning label, do not light it. Supervise children around fireworks at all times. Perhaps, the best way to enjoy fireworks is at a public display run by professionals. wayside and replaced by family and faith,” says Raimo Moysa, editor-in-chief of Reader’s Digest International Magazines. In the U.S., 63 percent of respondents reported that family was most important to their happiness, 32 percent believed faith was most important, while only 3 percent responded work and 2 percent said community. Significant results of the poll include the following: ■■Family: Family ranked the highest universally, starting at 61 percent (Poland and Romania) and reaching as high as 83 percent (Hungary). Results about family were the same regardless of gender, age and marital status, showing that having a family didn’t make respondents more or less happy if they were old or young, male or female, single or married. ■■Faith: The United States ranked faith as the highest of all the countries in importance to happiness and Brazil came in second at 26 percent. ■■Work: The United States and Hungary tied for the lowest percentage of respondents who said that work was most important to their personal happiness (3 percent). Respondents in Poland and Romania tied for the highest percentage of people – 12 percent – who ranked work as the most important factor. ■■Community: Brazilian respondents ranked community as the least important factor in their happiness at 1 percent, closely followed by the U.S., while Germany, Poland and Romania ranked it the highest of the countries polled, at 9 percent. Survey participants answered the question, “Which of the following are most important to your personal happiness?” regarding community, family, faith and work and ranked “1” as the most important through “4” as the least important to their personal happiness. The poll was conducted in February 2014, with follow-ups in March through early May. Visit www.rd.com/slideshows/happiness-poll/ to see all poll results.

Raising a Bilingual Child Offers a World of Benefits By Yvonne Vasquez

Although bilingualism may often seem to be just a popular social trend, there are actually many more substantial benefits that can be gained by knowing more than one language. In fact, the advantages of being bilingual have been well established in recent years. From a purely scientific perspective, being bilingual allows the brain to more easily approach cognitive problems. This improved cognitive development seems to result from the way a bilingual person can approach the world from more than one perspective. Bilingual skills also allow the brain to achieve higher levels of abstract thinking. In an article by Viorica Marian, Ph.D., director of the Bilingualism and Psycholinguistics Laboratory at Northwestern University, the cognitive benefits of bilingualism are reviewed in great detail. Why is cognitive development so important? Cognitive development, or the ability to think and understand, is fundamental to learning. Scientists have discovered that certain regions of the brain that govern problem solving, memory, reasoning, task flexibility and planning play an important role in the learning process. 12

Our Kids Magazine | July 2014

Cognitive or task flexibility, in particular, can be greatly enhanced through early bilingual learning. The skills most closely affected by this are reading fluency and comprehension, problem-solving and reasoning ability. There are many other valid reasons for introducing a second language into your child’s life. For starters, being able to communicate in two languages introduces new worlds of understanding. “You are instantly bridging a gap when you speak to another human being in their native tongue,” says Norbert Soto. “This leads to new ways of thinking about others when that did not exist before.” Another benefit comes when traveling in foreign countries. The trip can be so much more enjoyable when you can speak to the locals. “My children definitely have more meaningful cultural experiences when they travel to Latin countries and are able to converse with the locals in their language,” explains Soto. “People become more trusting and open when you can communicate with them on the same level.” Enriched learning about diverse cultures is another FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

valuable benefit your child is sure to appreciate. Increased tolerance for other backgrounds and customs also adds to the bilingual experience. Not to mention the professional doors that can be more easily opened when it comes to future career opportunities. According to Annalyn Kurtz of CNN Money, “Fluency in a foreign language is currently one of the hottest job skills to have.” Bilingual employees are in demand and can earn more money on average in the United States. As companies become international in scope, being bilingual will give your child a definite competitive edge. Such employees are simply more marketable to an employer than other applicants because their global potential of understanding is perceived as much broader. In addition, translators and interpreters are expected to be one of the 15 fastest growing occupations in the nation, according to the Department of Labor. According to Livingbilingual.com, “Being able to speak a language, other than English, can typically add around 10 to 15 percent to your wage.” This is especially true if the position calls for a second language as a requirement for the position, such as customer service, sales or travel occupations. Bilingual positions typically get fewer applicants than other jobs, effectively narrowing the competitive field as a result. Christopher Leite, a teaching assistant at the University of Ottawa, has experienced more opportunity than his non-bilingual colleagues by qualifying for more contracts and requiring less training for the same positions. After making the decision to raise a bilingual child, it is important to be proactive in the process. From birth to age 7 is the most optimal time to introduce this into your child’s life. Erika Levy, Ph.D., assistant professor of Speech and Language Pathology at Columbia University, explains that much of the crucial language development in the brain takes place during this period. Begin as early as possible, ideally from day one. If that’s not possible, then begin as soon as you can. Timing is important when it comes to learning a second language. The optimal age for this kind of learning is from birth to 3. Bilingual children may experience a temporary delay in talking when compared to other children. This is perfectly normal and is no cause for alarm. After all, physicist Albert Einstein spoke both German and Italian, and did not speak until he was 3 years old, according to Stanford economist Dr. Thomas Sowell, author of the book, “The Einstein Syndrome.” The second best period for language learning is when kids are between 4 and 7 years old. However, if children are older than 7 and have not yet reached puberty, it is still possible for their young brains to process more than one language easier than an adult can. Most importantly, understand that this endeavor requires lots of time, energy and commitment. If you speak the second language, don’t make the mistake of assuming that your child will just “pick up” the language from you along the way. As with most worthwhile things, persistence is the key. Robles knew this was necessary in order to help her child succeed in being bilingual. “I made sure that we talked to our daughter every day in both English and Spanish since she was a baby,” says Robles. “She is now in college and being able to communicate in both languages has been very beneficial for her.” In some families, daily conversation will be a key factor in establishing the learning routine. But if parents are not bilingual themselves, they will need to seek the help of formal instruction for their child. Too many parents often make the mistake of assuming that this will be an easy process and are disappointed when they learn that nothing could be further from the truth. The bilingual journey is a wonderful adventure, but “it definitely requires perseverance,” explains educator Adam Beck. Beck is the creator of Bilingual Monkeys, a website for parents seeking to raise bilingual children. The day-to-day distractions of family life can be daunting when trying to sustain a bilingual environment in the home. Life happens, but if the process goes off schedule once in a while, it’s not the end of the world. Don’t give up – just remember how important your goal is and get back on track as soon as possible. If you don’t speak the chosen language, you will need to also invest in specific schools or caregivers to help your child. Other ways you can find the balance include seeking out opportunities for your child to practice the language through babysitters, family members or community programs. Bilingual playgroups are one of the most enriching ways to increase your child’s exposure to the language, for both children and parents alike. Bilingual Buddies is one local group that offers opportunities for bilingual socializing with other children and their parents. Consider using bilingual children’s books for your child’s story time. Music is another easy way to incorporate a second language into your child’s bilingual world. Look for CDs or recorded programs to add a musical flavor to your child’s learning. Games, puzzles and puppets also provide powerful opportunities for bilingual learning. As an added bonus, these playtime tools also allow for wonderful bonding interaction with your child. Parents must be determined in their efforts to reinforce the second language. This is especially important because once your child is immersed in the elementary school system and is communicating in the majority language (usually English) it can quickly become dominant. Although your particular situation may not be perfect, anything you can do to maintain your progress will help you achieve your ultimate goal – raising a child who can enjoy the best of both worlds. Yvonne Vasquez is a San Antonio based freelance writer. She used some of the techniques mentioned in this article to raise a bilingual child.

Parenting the Troubled Child Helping a child who is struggling with mental illness By Gayla Grace

I was devastated when my oldest daughter was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder at 5 years old. I struggled to understand her during her early years and failed to parent her appropriately at times during her adolescent years, but she emerged from her teen-age years successfully, with a determined spirit and resolve to help others on a similar path. Mental illness is real. It shows up in the form of anxiety disorders, depression, ADHD, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder and a number of other diagnoses. The National Institute of Mental Health says, “Mental disorders are common among children in the United States, and can be particularly difficult for the children themselves and their caregivers. Just over 20 percent (or 1 in 5) children, either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental disorder.” Unfortunately, society often shames and disregards those struggling with mental illness. It’s easier for parents and teachers to deny a child is suffering than to confront it and seek support. But mental illness shouldn’t go unnoticed. If you suspect your child is suffering from mental illness, seek help. It’s no different than asking for help with diabetes, cancer or some other illness. Here are a few tips on what to do.

© iStock/ Cheryl Casey

Seek professional help and begin educating yourself. Start with your child’s pediatrician and ask questions about behavior that seems unusual. Learn all you can – you don’t have to have a medical background to begin to understand mental illness. You know your child better than anyone and can offer valuable insight with medical professionals. I was first told my daughter had ADHD but I suspected something different. As I continued to inform her doctor of her symptoms, the correct diagnosis emerged which led to appropriate help.

Let go of your guilt. It’s not your fault. Parents of children with mental illness are quick to blame themselves and hide in shame, but there’s no reason to take responsibility for a biologically based mental illness. Don’t feel guilty that your child behaves differently than your neighbor’s child. Good parenting doesn’t solve mental illness. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

Does your child have ADHD? Break the silence. Talk with school officials, other parents and appropriate individuals such as spiritual leaders and community authorities to improve the situation for your child. Find a support group of parents coping with mental illness. Make an intentional choice to not hide in shame. Don’t let it destroy your family. Support one another. Unite together as a team, educating other children in the family of the illness while being sensitive to your child’s feelings about the diagnosis. Don’t allow siblings to demoralize or make fun of their behavior. Help your other children understand their sibling cannot always control his or her behavior. In addition, stay calm in the face of danger or unusual behavior. Let your child know you love him and will always be there for him. Children with mental illness need more reassurance than other children. They need to feel loved and understood, even on days when their behavior spirals out of control. Make your home a safe place and encourage your child to ask questions and express his or her feelings. We were careful to alleviate situations that might cause anxiety for our daughter such as leaving her alone or placing her in a vulnerable situation. Keep an open mind about solutions. Don’t dismiss an alternative without exploring it. Stay educated of ongoing research to determine the latest methods of treatment. Seek others’ opinions on available options and try different methods. I was resistant to medicating my daughter in the beginning but her psychiatrist helped me recognize that counseling alone wasn’t enough due to her heightened emotions. After several months of counseling, she learned how to manage her anxiety and was able to come off the medication a few years later. The impact of mental illness in children cannot be denied; but with the proper tools and education, more children can get the help they need to overcome its devastating effects and lead productive lives. A mental illness diagnosis doesn’t mean your child will never lead a normal life. I’m thankful to report my daughter recently graduated from college with an Early Childhood Education degree and is excited about her next chapter in life as an elementary school teacher.

New Education Initiatives To Offer More Choices for Many San Antonio Kids By Renee Haines

When school doors re-open in August for the 2014-2015 academic year, many San Antonio kids will be introduced to new or expanding education programs. From a growing citywide pre-school program to a new way of educating sixth-graders, the city’s public schools are embracing innovative models for increasing learning success. More high school students will take classes on local college campuses this fall, while all ninth-graders will adapt to a new way of focusing their classes on specific fields of college- or career-based study that is now mandated by state legislation. San Antonio’s model Pre-K 4 SA program for area 4-year-olds will complete work in August on two new education centers, the West Center and East Center. Together with the existing North Center and South Center, the program expects to reach an enrollment of 1,500 by next year. Belinda Gonzalez, director of the South Center, uses the word “phenomenal” to describe the results of the 18

just-completed first year of a full-day pre-school program that is free to eligible 4-year-olds and available at a deeply discounted rate for other youngsters. “We’ve had an amazing year. We’ve seen the kids grow academically and socially,” Gonzalez says. “The kids are confidently signing their names. They interact with technology. Some of our kids are already reading. The kids have had some incredible opportunities.” U.S. studies show that early education programs result in higher academic performance in subsequent years, lead to increased high school graduation rates and produce higher college attendance numbers. New students will be able to learn on iPads and interactive Smart Boards being installed in new classrooms this year, and the centers will continue offering adult literacy classes for parents. Gonzalez says parent participation was high at special events for families during the past year. “It’s a very happy place for the kids and the parents. The parents feel at home here,” says Gonzalez. Education Directory A New Place for Sixth-Graders All sixth-graders in San Antonio’s Edgewood School District for the first time this fall will attend their own 6th Grade Academy, a bridge program for students leaving elementary school and entering their middle school years. The goal is to make it easier for kids to make the transition with a “blended instruction and project-based learning” approach, says district spokesman Roland Martinez. About 800 sixth-graders, who otherwise would have been attending the district’s three middle schools, will report for class in August at 6th Grade Academy, housed in a district building next to Brentwood Middle School. The districtwide program follows a pilot program in place during the last school year that involved only Brentwood sixth-graders. “We saw a decline in discipline referrals, and academic performance did not dip as we traditionally see when students transition to middle school,” says Martinez about positive outcomes from the pilot. Free SAT Tests San Antonio’s Northside School District this fall for the first time will allow its more than 7,000 high school juniors to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) free. The SAT is an admission requirement for many colleges and universities. Students also will be allowed to use free online preparation programs for the SAT. Unlike previous years, Northside students also can take

the SAT at their own schools instead of traveling to another testing center. District administrators say the goal is to encourage more students to consider college by eliminating SAT costs and offering the college entrance exams in a familiar place.

Education Directory their freshman year in high school on a college campus, thanks to Alamo Colleges’ Early College High School program, which will expand this fall to St. Philip’s College. About 100 high school students will take classes at the St. Philip’s campus beginning this year, although the schools expect to expand enrollment in coming years. In an era of dramatically rising higher education costs, this early college program is free, and eligible students can graduate from high school with their high school diploma and as many as 60 hours of college credit and/or a completed associate degree. They can also earn certification in fields such as information technology and automotive technology to help them get jobs immediately after graduation. For students who want a four-year degree, they will have completed as many as two years’ worth of college courses at no cost to their parents. National studies show that these programs produce increased high school graduation rates, higher college enrollment numbers and an obvious increase in high school seniors graduating with college credits and/or an associate’s degree or a technical certificate. Some SASD high school students already are attending Early College High School on the campus of San Antonio College, which had its first graduating class in 2012. The San Antonio Colleges program is also in place at the Northeast Lakeview College campus, which

houses the Judson Early College Academy for Judson School District high school students. San Antonio area parents of this year’s eighth-graders can contact school officials about enrolling their children in next year’s Early College High School program.

House Bill (H.B.) 5 Changes In August all ninth-graders in San Antonio and the rest of Texas will start school with curriculums designed to embrace what has been compared to declaring a college major four years early. Because of last year’s H.B. 5, a Texas bill signed into law that reduced the number of high school tests required for students to get their diploma from 15 to five, this year’s ninth-graders will be the first under the new regulations to have to pick one of five areas of academic/career interests. Their high school course schedules will be tailored to fit the five areas that are also called endorsements. The five are: public services, business and industry, arts and humanities, multidisciplinary studies and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Last year’s eighth-graders already have picked their concentration. While some Texas school districts will not offer all five areas this year, San Antonio’s North East School District is among those that will offer all five. “Is one [endorsement] better than another? No. It

Education Directory just provides kids more choices to focus on programs of study,” says John Vahalik, director of career and technical education at the district. “While everything was focused on being college-ready, this also focuses on helping them become career-ready.” The traditional academic rigor required to earn a high school diploma, he adds, will still be in place for all students. “I think parents are confused right now. The plan is very complicated,” says Vahalik, about meetings with parents and students last spring to address the changes. They’re not alone, he adds, “we feel like this is so new, we’ll have a lot of changes this year.” Vahalik suggests that parents of high school students not worry about specific endorsements, because the program is flexible enough to allow students to change their areas of concentration. For example, he says, students attending magnet schools or special programs in the past have focused on one area and then changed their mind after completing the courses to then concentrate on another field. For academically struggling students, “there’s been so much focus on academics, they don’t get to take electives.” Vahalik’s district will begin including industry certification that can be included on a student’s high school graduation diploma should the student opt for a more career-based curriculum. “I think it’s cool when you have all these opportunities at North East. There’s a plan there for every kid,” he says. For parents of high school students and eighth-graders who

will join the program next year, he advises that they consult school counselors. “Talk to your child and see what they’re interested in. Find out what your kids want to do,” Vahalik adds. Renee Haines is a freelance writer based in San Antonio.

Bringing Home Baby

Can a Postpartum Doula Help? By Christa Melnyk Hines

Corey Engmann never considered hiring a postpartum doula until she learned she was expecting twins. Feeling overwhelmed and worried about how she would handle twin babies, along with the pressing needs of her 2-year-old, she turned to a certified birth and postpartum doula, to help her after her twins arrived. The postpartum doula spent five nights a week for four months at Engmann’s home after the birth of the twins, providing support, encouragement and help. Her assistance enabled Engmann to get the sleep she needed to recover from a physically demanding pregnancy. Engmann says that hiring a postpartum doula was the best thing she ever did for herself and the family. “During the day I could be present, loving and enjoying all three of my children,” Engmann says. “It wasn’t the endless cycle of fatigue and frustration as it sometimes was during the first few months with my first child.” What is a postpartum doula? The first six weeks after a newborn arrives can be a mixture of happiness and anxiety as moms settle into a new routine. Many of today’s new mothers lack the support network that generations of mothers have relied on. Close family and friends are far-flung and partners return to work within days. A postpartum doula can provide experience and valuable support that a new mother may be missing. The support of a postpartum doula can be especially helpful to mothers who: Have a history of depression or postpartum depression. Don’t have close friends and family nearby to rely on. Are expecting multiples. Have other little ones demanding her attention. 28

“I am convinced that Teresa [postpartum doula] saved my life. As most moms have felt at one time or another, I was often wondering and questioning if what I was doing was the right thing for my children – and with twins, the responsibility is so unbelievably overwhelming,” Engmann says. Mothering the mother A mom who spends hours alone with her baby can easily spiral into emotional and physical exhaustion, which can put her at greater risk for postpartum anxiety or depression. During this challenging transition period – often called the fourth trimester, a postpartum doula can provide calm reassurance and support to a new mama and her family. “When moms feel supported at home and they are getting what they need, the rates of postpartum depression are reduced,” says Kate Kripke, LCSW, an expert in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and contributing writer for PostPartumProgress.com. “There is a lot to be said about the role the postpartum doula plays in simply mothering the mother after she gives birth that can be incredibly preventative for lots of women.” In addition to helping to care for the baby, FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

postpartum doulas often help with light housework, errands, cooking, crowd control and caring for siblings. Many are also trained to recognize the signs of postpartum depression and provide resources to the moms they support. “When doulas are educated in what to look for, they’re one of the first people to pick up on and identify when something is going on with the mom,” Kripke says. What is postpartum depression? According to PostPartum Support International, one in eight women suffers from postpartum depression. Symptoms include insomnia, severe mood swings, a lack of joy, loss of appetite, overwhelming fatigue, withdrawal from family and friends and thoughts of suicide. (Additional symptoms can be found at MayoClinic.org). Postpartum depression can also interfere with healthy bonding between a mom and her newborn. “When a baby is on the inside, a woman takes amazing care of herself. And then the baby is born, it becomes all about the baby. As soon as that mom starts to struggle and suffer, she will no longer have what is going to be required to care for her baby the way she wants to. Not because she isn’t a good mom or doesn’t love her child, but simply because she’s human,” Kripke says. “I find that the women who are enjoying motherhood the most and who feel the healthiest ... are the ones who are receiving help,” Kripke concludes. For more information about postpartum doulas and to find one in your area, visit www.dona.org.

How you can help

Having a sense of community is vital to a new mom’s health and well being. Here are ways you can help a new mom during those first few weeks home (always text or call ahead first): ■■ Coordinate an online care train where friends and family can sign up for time slots to deliver meals, take care of siblings, clean house or rock the baby. (Check out www.mealtrain.com.) ■■ Offer to rock the baby for a couple of hours to give mom a chance to take a shower or a nap. ■■ Deliver coffee and muffins. ■■ Drop off a fully prepared meal. ■■ Babysit any older children for an afternoon. ■■ Offer to walk her dog, clean house or run an errand. ■■ Give her a gift card to her favorite take-out restaurant.
