Antibiotics Successful Treatment for Uncomplicated Acute Appendicitis in Children Newswise – Using antibiotics alone to treat children with uncomplicated acute appendicitis is a reasonable alternative to surgery that leads to less pain and fewer missed school days, according to a pilot study. The research, led by a team at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and published online April 12 in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, is the first prospective study on nonoperative management of acute appendicitis in pediatric patients in the United States. Researchers enrolled 77 patients age 7 to 17 who were diagnosed with uncomplicated acute appendicitis by a surgeon in the Emergency Department at Nationwide Children’s between October 2012 and October 2013. Participants had experienced abdominal pain for no more than 48 hours; had a white blood cell count below 18,000; underwent an ultrasound or CT scan to rule out rupture and to verify that their appendix was 1.1 cm thick or smaller; and had no evidence of abscess or fecalith, which is hard stone made of calcified stool. Thirty patient families chose antibiotics alone and 47 opted for surgery. F.Y.I. Fiesta Commission Calls for 2015 Poster Contest Entries The Fiesta San Antonio Commission is calling for entries for the official Fiesta San Antonio 2015 Poster Contest. All artists of traditional media (oil/acrylic/tempera, watercolors, illustrations, prints) and of computer graphics are invited to participate in the annual competition. All submissions must represent the unique style and imagery of San Antonio reflecting the excitement and spirit of the city. Deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. June 27, 2014. Celebrating Mother’s Day How Kids Can Add a Personal Touch By Renee Haines

May’s the month for stringing together uncooked macaroni shells for makeshift necklaces or, when you’re much older, visiting greeting card aisles, candy counters and the local florist while searching online retailers for Mother’s Day finds. Mother’s Day was held Feb. 12 in Norway, and won’t take place until December in Panama and Indonesia. Here in North America, while Canada and the United States celebrate the second Sunday of May, Mother’s Day is celebrated May 10 every year in Mexico. Actually, they’re ahead by two days this year, since one tradition is to first gather May 9 for a family dinner. However, it’s much of the Eastern Hemisphere that has the real jump on what they call Mothering Day in England, which was celebrated March 30 or earlier this year. Thus, we tend to find ourselves behind by a month or two in the annual reporting on gift ideas. London’s Daily Mail, for example, reported in midMarch that a chocolate maker had teamed up with a 3D printing company to create three-dimensional molds from photographs of kids to fill with chocolate for their mums. The Daily Telegraph listed favorite recipes for hare, crumpets, pheasant and, with no translation needed here, macaroni and cheese.

The homemade touch In the United States, Mother’s Day is a $20 billion operation, according to the National Retail Federation. That can be a scary number for kids, but it doesn’t have to be. A U.S. credit card trends and financial education company with the kid-friendly name of CreditDonkey in April 2013 asked moms what they really want for Mother’s Day. The most responses (36 percent) were that moms want to receive something homemade. 10

“While most sons and daughters plan to stick to tradition and give flowers, dinner and a greeting card, our survey suggests it may be time to consider being less predictable,” CreditDonkey.com founder Charles Tran stated in a news release reporting the survey’s results. Adding a homemade touch to any present or outing is easy for kids of any age. In San Antonio, as in most cities around the country, restaurants will be celebrating one of their busiest days of the year. One of the biggest public celebrations outdoors is free, when Market Square in downtown San Antonio sponsors Mother’s Day Weekend May 10-11 with live music and folk dancing performances. If mom’s a fan of the San Antonio Zoo, the zoo is celebrating its 100th anniversary, the Zootennial, through the end of this year. The Witte Museum is presenting Fairytale Fiesta all spring and summer with a display of elaborate San Antonio Fiesta parade gowns inspired by classic fairytales and myths. Kids can create a homemade invitation to ask their mom to spend a family afternoon at the park, the zoo, a museum or even a free crafts day scheduled May 11 at the San Antonio Public Library system’s downtown central library. Alice Ragan, owner of the Cowboy Capital Candy Co. and Christmas Corner in Bandera, says she is delighted when customers ask her to personalize gift baskets for Mother’s Day and other holidays. Ragan’s colorful store shelves hold giant jars of individually wrapped classic candy brands popular from the 1940s through today, with the latest versions of Tootsie Roll and M&M treats vying for space with vintage brands of rock candy, Mary Janes, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Slo-Pokes, Chuckles, Necco Wafers, root beer barrels and peanut butter logs. Sugar-free candies also are popular. Kids with the smallest budgets can afford to present their moms, aunts or grandmothers gifts of a few pieces of candy that they loved as children, and so can older and grown-up children, she says. “They need to get an idea of what grandma liked and what mom liked. Kids can do that if they want to add a personal touch,” Ragan says. Other ways to personalize gifts include tucking an old photograph of mom as a child or of mom and the kids inside a gift basket, bouquet or greeting card. Kids can team up with siblings or other relatives to find photographs or collect small sums of money for a joint gift that’s decorated with drawings or pictures.

Creating memories An investment in good-quality paper and watercolors can create a lasting memory for mom, says Lisa Mares, owner of the ArtWorks Art Studio in San Antonio. “These are special to moms. They’ll keep them forever,” says Mares, whose studio offers art classes and summer day camps for children. Kids can frame their art or simply roll it up and secure with a piece of ribbon in mom’s favorite color. A thank-you note to mom provides that extra touch. “Kids can choose a memory or just a design,” Mares says. “Most kids will know what to do when you give them a piece of paper and paint.” What Terrie Dodson, a San Antonio mother of two, says she treasures the most are drawings from her kids inside handmade cards. “Kids grow up, people move and things get lost. But I’ve always held on to my cards with little drawings and the ‘I love mom’ notes,” she says. Kids of any age also can add a personal touch with a Mother’s Day gift that involves no shopping or homemade crafts. “Time is a gift, and it doesn’t have to be a whole day. Give me one concentrated hour with personal talk,” says Jo Marie Cano of San Antonio, mother of three grown sons. “Time is the most personal thing. Michelle Marroquin knew what happened at school the moment her twins Luke and Will hit the front door at home. They bounced, cavorted and generally ran amok. Sure enough, they had no recess; it was an extremely cold day with the gym otherwise occupied – this at a school that normally mandates recess. “I’m a huge proponent of recess,” says Marroquin, a former middle school teacher, now mother of two sets of twins and a 3-year-old. “Recess provides a time for children to have unstructured playtime that benefits learning. On another level, recess is a time when children are actually learning valuable social skills – negotiation, cooperation and sharing.” Mari Riojas-Cortez, Ph.D., agrees heartily with Marroquin’s approach to recess. Riojas-Cortez is the chairperson of the University of Texas at San Antonio Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching and professor of early childhood education. Occasionally when she is overlooking a playground of cavorting, running, chasing, laughing children she overhears someone saying, “Oh, those kids are just playing,” to which she responds, “That’s what they need to be doing as a time away from color, cut, paste and memorization drills.” “Play lets children open up and really be creative especially since they don’t have to come up with a product,” notes the recess encourager Riojas-Cortez. “It’s good for children to go outside for both their mind and body – in a time the noise level doesn’t matter. Kids must have and very much need a break from structured cognitive, academic activities.

The pediatrician also says studies indicate that after recess children actually do better on tests because they are energized. Medellin thinks the Japanese have an interesting model when it comes to unstructured time. “Japanese schools give breaks at the end of each hour of instruction. enthusiastic as the children she teaches, says all children should be allowed to go out and play. Indeed it’s fortunate for Marroquin and other families in her neighborhood because Leon Springs Elementary School policy values recess every bit as much as the academic side of schooling. “We are so lucky at our school because our principal, Kathy Dodge-Clay tells us that ‘No kids should stay in from recess.’ She says children have to get out and sharpen that saw.” Marroquin admits however, when she was teaching, and before she had children, she didn’t understand the important role of recess for children. “Now I see firsthand a child’s attention span is limited; they often need to get up and move around. There is such an important connection between movement and learning.” And as a parent Marroquin says, “Not so much for my girl, but for my three boys, not being able to move makes a huge difference. After exercise and play they actually are better in paying attention and sitting still.” Marroquin concludes, “I am adamant against taking recess as a punishment or for using the time for academic remediation. Children are denied important time to explore, learn and expand their boundaries when recess is seen as subordinate to structured classroom learning.” When Marroquin picks up her five children from school, the first thing she asks, “Did you go outside and play? American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Statement “The Crucial Role of Recess in School,” Policy Statement from American Academy of Pediatrics, published online, Dec. 31, 2012. Abstract: Recess is at the heart of a vigorous debate over the role of schools in promoting the optimal development of the whole child. A growing trend toward reallocating time in school to accentuate the more academic subjects has put this important facet of a child’s school day at risk. Recess serves as a necessary break from the rigors of concentrated, academic challenges in the classroom. But equally important is the fact that safe and well-supervised recess offers cognitive, social, emotional and physical benefits that may not be fully appreciated when a decision is made to diminish it. Recess is unique from, and a complement to, physical education – not a substitute for it. The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that recess is a crucial and necessary component of a child’s development, and as such, it should not be withheld for punitive or academic reasons. Fitness, Safety and Family Fun in the Water By Mary Reilly-Magee

With the warm Texas weather, it’s time to enjoy some fun in the sun and water. Swimming is a low impact workout that can have a big impact on your family’s health and safety. Here are some great reasons to get your family in the water: Promote Healthy Habits. It’s never too early to begin fostering healthy habits in your child and swimming is an excellent workout. Children can exercise more muscles in the water because they are less restricted by gravity. They engage several body parts without putting stress on their joints. Get your babies in the water, too. Though they may lack the motor skills necessary to walk or run, they can freely use muscles in the water that they wouldn’t use otherwise. Children have so much fun playing and splashing around in the water; they don’t even realize they’re exercising. Make Learning Fun. Practice the fundamental water 14

safety exercise “Jump, Roll and Shout” in the pool with your kiddos. Teach them to: Check the water to make sure it’s safe before jumping in Jump feet first into the water Rise up to the surface of the water Float on back for 10 seconds and yell for help Swim toward the side of the pool or edge of the water Talk with your children about how to react appropriately if they fall in water. Much like fire drills, children should be quizzed often so they know how to react without panicking when they encounter a dangerous or unexpected situation. Children have a blast learning this exercise and you will have peace of mind knowing your family is safer. camp & Summer activities Guide Get Your Workout In. Swimming is a great way to burn calories while bonding with your family. Water is one of the best fitness tools – it provides resistance, which strengthens muscles and boosts cardio intensity. Water also supports some of your weight, making workouts easier on joints and reducing injury. To make pool time a more challenging workout for you, try keeping your feet from touching the pool bottom while you work with your children. Have everyone grab onto the edge of the pool and practice kicking while keeping your bodies horizontal. Reduce Exercise-Induced Asthma. Swimming is one of the best exercises for those with asthma because it builds the muscles used for breathing. Breathing in the warm, moist air while swimming helps prevent attacks during exercise. Being fit can actually reduce the frequency of exercise-induced asthma, so keep on swimming.

As children become more independent in the water, they develop self-confidence and pride. Keep Your Family Safer. Safety is the most important reason children should learn to swim, hands down. No one is ever drown-proof, but your family will be much safer around water if you ensure that everyone knows how to swim. Learning to swim requires commitment and dedication (two weeks once a year is not enough). Enroll your family in swim lessons and keep everyone in until they can really swim to dramatically reduce the risk of drowning. Also, it’s important to assess the risks associated with the water. Awareness and vigilance help keep water activities fun and safe for the whole family. Always designate a Water Watcher (responsible adult supervising the water and doing nothing else) when any kids are in or around the water. Traveling With Kids by Janine Queenin

What follows are some tips that hopefully will make life a bit easier when traveling with kids. • Traveling is a good time to break the family’s no electronics rule. Age-appropriate apps and games are a lifesaver during long rides or delays. • Dress all children in the same, bright colored shirt to locate them quickly at a busy rest area or airport. • Lollipops help relieve ear pressure on airplanes during take off and offer a few minutes of quiet distraction while you rent a car, check in at a hotel or wait for a table at a restaurant. Sugar-free lollipops work too. • Invest in a few new inexpensive books and toys, put each in wrapping paper or decorated paper bag, and let your child open one each hour during the trip. Old toys that have been out of rotation will work too. • Pack an abundance of healthy snacks like fruit and whole-wheat crackers; include some protein like cheese or hummus to keep everyone’s energy up. Don’t forget a few treats. • After airport security, buy bottles of water for the plane. The air in the cabin is dry and the cups given out by flight attendants are small (plus they’re too busy to keep you hydrated). Dehydration causes fatigue and worsens jetlag, so drink up. • Put a business card from the hotel or a note with your temporary address in the child’s pants pocket. • Travel mid-week if possible to save money and avoid crowds on the road and in the air. • Forgetting where you parked is a lousy way to end a vacation. Use a phone to snap a picture of your car’s location before heading into the terminal. • Some airlines allow parents with children to board first. Board early and the kids will be cooped up on the plane for an extra 20-30 minutes. Wait until the end of the line. 16

• Tuck a soft duffle bag into your suitcase. Souvenirs are heavy and extra weight on a plane is pricey, so it pays (literally) to plan ahead. • Fly early in the morning to avoid waiting in the airport. Afternoon and evening flights are more likely to be delayed. • Reserve your seats on a plane as early as possible to avoid being separated from your children. Unless your kids are old enough to sit alone, think twice about booking with an inexpensive carrier without assigned seating. • If you are separated, ask other passengers to change seats. Many are willing to help a mom, especially if you offer a better location in the plane. • When getting on a bus, train, elevator, or even a revolving door, decide who will get on first and last, so no is lost or left behind. • Keep your sense of humor, be open to adventures and most of all have fun. Healthy Eyes are Happy Eyes By April Lynn Newell

There are many protective measures to take when it comes to keeping children healthy such as wearing sunscreen outside or appropriate shoes for different activities. Amidst the shuffle of all the protective gear, the eyes are sometimes left forgotten. Regular vision screening, sunglasses and proper sporting gear aid in keeping children’s eyes healthy. “Anytime you have a young child they need to go through proper vision screening. That’s a really cost effective way of screening kids’ vision,” says Dr. Claire Hennessey, chief orthoptist of Children’s Eye Center of South Texas. “Some people advocate children going through a full-blown eye exam, but that’s really not necessary as long as vision screening is occurring that’s really where you’re going to catch the bulk of a child’s vision problems.” Regular tests of a child’s eyes should be done during every routine check up with a pediatrician. Most public schools provide routine screenings as well. “The majority of what we treat is children whose eyes are not straight, strabismus. That’s an umbrella term that means you have a misaligned eye,” says Hennessey. “Some eye misalignments do not pop up until around age 2 or 3, so that is something else parents want to watch for, but pediatricians are looking for these things too. If there is family history of a parent with a crossed, wandering eye or retina problem, then you want to get your kid checked out by an ophthalmologist early on.” Along with vision screenings, Hennessey also advises sunglasses whenever possible, vitamins and a good, healthy diet. According to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, “The lens of a child allows 70 percent more UV rays to reach the delicate retina than in an adult.” Sunglasses for children can be just as important as sun block! Try making shopping for sunglasses fun for children who are hesitant by allowing them to choose their own pair, or try surprising them with a fun, wacky pair. “Sometimes kids will come in here and they’ve been prescribed glasses, but their friends are making fun of them at school so they won’t wear them. If you do need glasses as 28

a child and you don’t wear them, it can give you long-term bad vision as an adult, so the best thing to do is to wear your glasses,” says Hennessey. Hennessey has several recommendations when it comes to encouraging children to wear their glasses. For younger kids, she recommends finding a book like Blues Clues’ “Magenta Gets Glasses” or using a reward system. She also says it may help to show them photos of celebrities they admire wearing glasses. “Pictures of famous people that have glasses help, you would be kind of shocked that if a famous person wears glasses then the child will think it is OK,” says Hennessey. “Sometimes parents will come in and say, ‘I’ve done everything, I really need you to talk to them,’ so I will have a heart-to-heart with them and a lot of times if you take time to explain to the child then they will actually do it.” According to the National Eye Institute, 59 percent of eye injuries in children are sports and recreation related. To protect children’s eyes from sports injuries (especially ball sports like baseball and basketball which rank as the top sports that cause eye injuries in children) have them wear the appropriate gear for each recreational activity. “Wear protective eyewear [during sports], especially if you have a history of bad vision in one eye. What if a ball hits their good eye and they lost that one? Their life would be totally altered. Not every child needs to wear sports goggles, but if they have a history of an eye issue, they really need to protect themselves,” explains Hennessey. “Wear all the proper sporting gear. If they are going to play paintball or with a BB gun, they need to wear the proper eyewear. We have seen kids lose eyes over BBs and paintballs.” While most eye injuries seem to be from sports and recreational activities, Hennessey says the majority of their patients do not come in because of injuries. “The main cause for a child who comes in with decreased vision is amblyopia-lazy vision in the brain from ignoring the eye,” explains Hennessey. “Usually it only occurs in one FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

eye, and a lot of times mom and dad don’t know because sometimes there is not an outward sign that a child is struggling to see.” It can be useful to know symptoms of regular eye issues. According to kidshealth.org symptoms can include: • Constant eye rubbing • Extreme light sensitivity • Poor focusing • Poor visual tracking • Abnormal alignment or movement of the eyes after 6 months of age • Chronic redness or tearing • White pupil instead of black • Inability to see an object from a distance or to read the blackboard at school • Squinting • Difficulty reading • Sitting too close to the TV

H-E-B Body Adventure at the Witte The transformation of the Witte Museum’s H-E-B Science Treehouse into the H-E-B Body Adventure Powered by University Health System is under way. Visitors will begin by selecting a buddy as their virtual guide throughout the exhibit. eReading Rooms for Children and Teens Now Available at the San Antonio Public Library The San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) has expanded its services with a new digital collection website experience for children and teens. Through a partnership with OverDrive, Inc., children and teen eReading rooms are now available at mysapl.org. The eReading

rooms provide a virtual environment for children and teens to browse within the SAPL digital library. Each is customized to display content only for the particular browsing audience, either juvenile or young adult. All titles in the eReading rooms are cataloged by reading level and other reading metrics to help parents and teachers select titles to aid in literacy campaigns. All titles can be sampled in OverDrive Read prior to borrowing or placing a hold. Browsing can be done by subject, reading level or interest level. The children’s and teen’s eReading rooms screen the overall digital collection to only show age-appropriate content. This new service is free for users with a library card. The Children’s Fine Art Series will feature a production of Malika Queen of the Cats on May 20 at Charline McCombs Empire Theatre. There will be three shows performed by the Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre troupe. “Malika Queen of the Cats” tells the story of Sitti, a generous woman who lived several years ago in Palestine. One day, she rescued a kitten from a tree, only to be introduced to a group of magical, talking cats, who lived in a cave outside the village. Malika, the queen of the cats, rewarded Sitti’s good deed with bags of gold and silver. But when Sitti’s selfish neighbor Um Yusef demanded the same gifts of Malika, things didn’t turn out quite as she expected. This production is suggested for ages 3 and older. Admission is $9.
