Viva Fiesta! It’s truly amazing how Fiesta, this citywide party, gets bigger and bigger ever year. With 107 official Fiesta events going on throughout San Antonio, it can be overwhelming when deciding which events to attend with your kids. We tried to help parents narrow down the choices by compiling a Fiesta Round-Up of family friendly events. Besides this special Fiesta guide, we also have our monthly calendar with tons of things for families to do. April in not only the month of Fiesta but is also Autism Awareness Month. What better way to raise awareness then to combine the two? That is why Our Kids Magazine will be attending the Any Baby Can’s Fiesta event “The 11th Annual Walk for Autism.” Join us at the event, we will their showing support and passing out our April issue featuring the article “Giving Hope to Children with Autism” by Dr. Domonique Randall, BCBA-D. We hope everyone had a great time at the Our Kids Magazine’s Camp Fair last month. If you couldn’t attend and are still looking for the right summer camp situation for your kids, take a look at the Camp Directory. Heidi Smith Luedtke is back with two great camp articles, “Kids Going to Camp? How Not to Worry” and “Self-Determination at Summer Camp”, both full of good advice for parents considering summer camp for the kiddos. Now that we are well in to Spring time, parents are thankful for no more colds and fewer sick kids; however, that’s not the case for our babies. Read “Ear Infections” by Jessa McClure as she interviews board-certified pediatrician, Lindsay Irvin, MD, on why these infections are so common in children and what parents can do. Happy reading and be safe while you Fiesta this month!

“We look forward to expanding the success of the Downtown Tuesday initiative,” District 1 City Councilman Roberto C. Treviño said. “It makes our downtown more vibrant and welcoming to residents and visitors alike.” To further encourage residents and visitors to explore downtown, The City of San Antonio announced an exciting partnership with VIA Metropolitan Transit and Centro San Antonio. “The E” is a new, free downtown circulator providing an easy and convenient way to explore entertainment venues, dining and cultural sites downtown. The route provides frequent service to the Tobin Center, the Convention Center and other venues, restaurants and hotels in between. The E will run every 10 minutes from 6 p.m. until midnight, Tuesday through Saturday. Visit VIAinfo. net/E for an interactive map showing how The E can get you to great places for arts, culture and entertainment. Service begins March 28, 2015. “VIA is proud to announce the launch of The E alongside our many community partners today. This new service reflects VIA’s continued commitment to a robust presence in downtown, and provides a great travel option in and around the downtown area,” said VIA Board Secretary Marc Harrison. The E is sponsored in part by the City of San Antonio’s Center City Development & Operations Department and Centro San Antonio through the support of the Centro Public Improvement District. “The E offers a fabulous opportunity to showcase downtown San Antonio as an entertainment hub and to conveniently connect people to the places they want to visit. We want to make it easy for people to take advantage of everything downtown has to offer. We’re excited to be a part of the launch of this new service,” said Pat DiGiovanni, Centro San Antonio President & CEO. Kids Going to Camp? How Not to Worry By Heidi Smith Luedtke
If your kids are going to sleep-away camp this summer, you may be wrestling with worries and what-ifs. ■■What if he wets the bed? ■■What if the other kids are cliquish or mean? ■■Will the camp director call me if she’s miserable?
Why Parents Worry “Much of our anxiety as parents stems from the fact that there are so many things we cannot control in our children’s lives,” says Paul Donahue, PhD, clinical psychologist and author of Parenting Without Fear. You may worry that without structure kids won’t be able to handle routine tasks like showering, brushing teeth or getting dressed. One mom I know felt so sure her son wouldn’t change clothes at camp that she packed his items – one pair of underwear, shorts, shirt, and socks – in gallon-size Ziploc bags, labeled with the days of the week. Because parents focus so much on kids’ needs, it’s hard to step back. Coverage of natural disasters and child predators makes the world seem scary.
LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA
“Concern about the safety of children has become something of a national obsession,” Donahue observes. Even though our protective instincts keep us on edge, sometimes we have to trust others to care for our kids, and trust our kids to look out for themselves. Fear of letting go can also be driven by our own uncertainty about who we are without our kids and what we’ll do while they’re away. Without baseball practice, piano lessons, bedtime routines and movie night, our lives would be slower and saner and… emptier.
How to Stop It Don’t let worries weigh you down. Use them as an opportunity to confront your own needs for safety, control, and closeness. Here’s how. Step back. Anxieties have a way of sucking you in. Your thoughts and emotions may be swirling like a tornado around you. Get out of the eye of the storm

Question your assumptions. Fears may be fueled by irrational beliefs. Kids don’t suffer serious malnutrition from week-long candy binges. And wearing dirty clothes won’t kill them either. Concerned your temperamental child won’t fit in socially? Allow for the possibility she’ll find buddies to hang out with all on her own. Don’t let your beliefs limit kids’ potential. Keep goals in mind. Ultimately, parents want kids to become self-reliant, says Donahue, and building self-reliance requires parents do less, not more for their kids. Camp builds competence and independence. Give your kids time to stretch beyond their comfort zones. Have a plan. Keep anxieties in control by making a plan for how you’ll use your “time off.” Schedule special time with siblings who aren’t going camping. Plan a romantic date or overnight getaway with your spouse. Learn something new or catch up on your favorite shows. Stay busy (but in a good way). You deserve a change of pace, too. Share stories. One sure-fire way to break out of anxiety is to remember and share the fun times you had at camp with your kids. Tell them where you went and what you did. The time you flipped your canoe over and got sopping wet in the lake shouldn’t be a secret. Kids love to hear about parents’ camp adventures.

Stay connected. The kids will be gone but not forgotten. Find fun postcards, print pictures of family pets, and collect care-package items to send. Getting mail from home makes kids feel special. Resist the urge to check in every day: kids need space. Don’t forget to send supplies so your kids can send letters home. They’ll want to share their experiences and you’ll treasure their letters forever. Anxiety is understandable, but it shouldn’t stop you from sending kids off to camp. It’s likely that many of your cherished childhood memories involve nature, new friends, and time to explore on your own – summer camp offers all these opportunities and more. It’ll be okay if they stay up too late, eat burned marshmallows, or lose their swim goggles in the lake. Really. Heidi Smith Luedtke is a psychologist and mom of two independent, energetic kids. Parents spend a lot of time trying to motivate kids. We use chore charts, checklists, reminders and rewards to get them to feed the dog, clean their rooms, and complete schoolwork. But these techniques don’t change behavior long-term. Real motivation must come from within.
The Psychology of Summer Camp Time at camp may be all it takes to spark a little selfdetermination in your kid. I know it sounds too good to be true. Your school-age slacker – the one who expects you to find his homework and pack his lunch – might start doing some things for himself. And your often-bored tween might come home with more pep in her step. Psychologists use self-determination theory (SDT) to explain why some experiences make us feel engaged and excited while others drain and deplete us. The premise is simple: when an activity meets our needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, we are energized and empowered. Kids’ basic needs are no different from adults’. Kids want to do things for themselves. They crave a sense of accomplishment and routinely seek feedback. (“Look what I made, Mom!”) And kids thrive on connections with loved ones and peers. Feelings of belongingness boost their self-worth. Summer camp offers loads of opportunities to meet all these needs. And that should make kids (and the parents who love them) very happy campers indeed. Autonomy The need for autonomy is satisfied when kids control their own lives. At camp, your son will have endless opportunities care for himself. Staff won’t select his clothes, organize the contents of locker, or remind him to put on deodorant. No one will delay dessert until he eats his veggies. Independence is what camp is all about. Don’t worry. The world won’t stop if your son wears the same

CAMP DIRECTORY shirt three days in a row. His peers will speak up if he gets super stinky. During the school year, many kids jump from one regularly scheduled activity to the next with no unstructured time in between. Camp puts kids in charge of their own activities. Maybe your daughter will take a hike. Maybe she’ll paint pottery. Maybe she’ll write you an email. It is up to her to decide how she’ll spend her free time. One thing is certain: she won’t sit around whining about having nothing to do. And if she does, you won’t be there to hear it.
Competence The need for competence is satisfied when kids learn new things and get positive feedback about their efforts. Your kid might choose a camp focused on art, science, sports, or music. Or he may opt for a good old-fashioned sleep-away experience, complete with row boats and weenie roasts. Some camp activities may be outside your kid’s comfort zone. Stretching is good. Your child may be unsure she can cross the slippery log over the creek. She may tremble with excitement about her role in the theater production. Peers and counselors will coax her along and give constructive advice. By the end of camp, she’ll be the star of her own adventure stories. If your kid is an experienced camper, encourage him to share what he knows with newbies. Being an ambassador or mentor affirms kids’ competence in a big way. Teaching a peer how to trim a sail or chip a golf ball out of the tall grass will take your son’s skills to a higher level. His confidence will soar in response.

Relatedness Your biggest concerns about summer camp may center on the social scene. Your child may not know anyone on arrival. That’s okay. Camps create connections in many ways. Your kid will be instantly bonded with bunkmates because they share a home base. Family-style dining and friendly competitions encourage interaction, too. The pursuit of shared goals – like building a robot or putting a frog in the counselor’s sleeping bag – cements kids’ camaraderie. Extroverted kids may make lots of friends at camp. Less sociable souls may not. What matters most is that kids have opportunities to talk, play and live with a diverse group of peers. They won’t all become fast friends. Learning to navigate the choppy waters of friendship formation is a big part of the camp experience. Your kid’s social skillset will expand – even if she doesn’t find a new BFF. No matter what your kid takes to camp, he’ll come home with a suitcase full of memories and a renewed sense of self-determination. You’ll see it as soon as he wakes from his long post-camp nap. Giving Hope to Children with Autism By Dr. Domonique Randall
As parents, we feel there is an endless list of things to worry about when it comes to our children. Those concerns start the day a baby is born, with parents constantly tracking their child’s developmental path, worried about whether or not they are hitting their age-appropriate milestones. A major developmental concern amongst parents is autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by social impairment, communication difficulties and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) 2014 Community Report on Autism, the new estimate of autism prevalence is 1 in 68 children. That can be a scary statistic for parents, but there is hope through early detection and proven evidencebased approaches, such as applied behavior analysis (ABA). ABA, which is endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General, The American Academy of Pediatrics, and National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development, is an evidence-based treatment approach that is focused on understanding how behavior is affected by the environment. The scientific principles 28
Our Kids Magazine | April 2015
of learning are applied to behavioral deficiencies and excesses associated with ASD. The sooner a parent or physician can identify the signs of ASD, the better. Early intervention yields the best outcomes as far as developmental gains and increased IQ. Studies show early intensive intervention, such as ABA, improves learning, communication and social skills. The following early detection signs may indicate that your child is at risk for ASD. If your child exhibits any of these signs, please do not hesitate to contact your pediatrician. Appropriate screening can determine whether a child is at risk for autism. ■■No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six
months or thereafter
■■No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other
facial expressions by nine months
■■No babbling by 12 months ■■No back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, reaching
or waving by 12 months
■■No words by 16 months ■■No meaningful, two-word phrases (not including
imitating or repeating) by 24 months

Once a parent is faced with an autism diagnosis, one of their first questions is, “What do we do now?” While there is currently no single known cause or cure for autism, there is a way to improve the everyday struggles. But time is of the essence – choosing the best treatment and getting started early is critical. First, I recommend that parents make a commitment to choose only evidence-based treatments, such as ABA. It can be overwhelming when you search the Internet, so a good starting place is the First 100 Day Kit available on www.AustimSpeaks.org. Next, be sure you have a support system in place with family and friends that will support you in your efforts to start and maintain ABA treatment. Often times the focus of ABA treatment will require that parents, family and friends change their responses to the child’s behavior to support his or her learning. Third, find quality ABA treatment programs that will focus on the child’s, as well as the family’s, needs.
Here are some key elements of quality programs: ■■Qualified Professionals - this includes board certified behavior analyst and behavior technicians ■■Data-driven treatment decisions ■■Individualized assessment and treatment based on the child’s strengths and weaknesses ■■Several forms of teaching to promote acquisition and generalization of skills – naturalist training, structured teaching, and social learning opportunities ■■Parent training and support in ABA principles and techniques ■■Teaches replacement behavior through the use of positive reinforcement Finally, consider the commitment in terms of resources and time. Intensive ABA often consists of 30 plus hours per week for multiple years. A total of 38 states now require some coverage for diagnosis and treatment for autism. To learn more about this mandate, visit. www.AutismSpeaks.org. Being your child’s advocate is important. Just remember, early detection and intervention is key. The sooner the signs of autism are identified and evidence-based treatment can begin, the better the outcome for your child. Dr. Domonique Randall, BCBA-D, is the founder and CEO of The Shape of Behavior, an ABA clinic for individuals with ASD and other disabilities. She has over 17 years of experience in autism treatment. Ear Infections Why They are So Common and What to do if They are a Chronic Problem By Jessa McClure
Your toddler suddenly wakes in the middle of the night pulling on his ear, telling you he’s in pain. You realize that the days of cold symptoms have probably become an ear infection. Although the helplessness of dealing with a child suffering from such an infection makes you feel like you’re the only parent who has ever gone through this experience, you are not alone. Five out of six children will experience an ear infection before their third birthday, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). In fact, board-certified pediatrician, Lindsay Irvin, MD, of the Alamo Heights pediatric clinic, said she sees children with ear infections every day. “According to Nelson’s Textbook of Pediatrics, ‘Next to the common cold, ear infections are the most commonly diagnosed and probably the most prevalent illness of children in the United States,’” Irvin said.
Why does is occur? “Middle ear infections are usually caused by inflammation of the Eustachian tube – a tube that runs from the middle ear to the back of the nose,” she said. “The 30
Our Kids Magazine | April 2015
Eustachian tube is responsible for draining and ventilating, the middle ear.” If the Eustachian tube is compromised, due to inflammation, it cannot function properly. The poorly functioning tube then creates a breeding ground for bacteria and infection.
What are the signs and symptoms of an ear infection? “Acute Otitis Media – the kind of infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics – almost always occurs in conjunction with an upper respiratory infection (a cold),” the pediatrician said. If your child shows these symptoms within three to seven days of cold (fever, cough and nasal drainage), than they might be showing signs of an ear infection. Signs could include: ■■Ear pain ■■Feeding/eating poorly ■■Sleeping poorly ■■Crying more than usual ■■Fever ■■Pulling at the ears FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
What are the treatments for an ear infection? The treatment for a middle ear infection depends on its type. The most common types are Otitis Media with effusion (OME) ad Acute Otitis Media (AOM). “The Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend any treatment – just close follow up and watchful waiting— for a child who has OME,” Irvin said. “For AOM the ear drum is noted to be opaque and bulging on exam and sometimes the examiner can see pus behind the ear drum. That kind of infection does require treatment with an antibiotic.” Children with recurrent ear infections, or infections that fail to clear with antibiotics, will sometimes need to have tympanostomy tubes inserted to ventilate the middle ear when the Eustachian tube becomes too inflamed and isn’t doing its job. Why are ear infections so common in young children? “The main reason is that ear infections are almost always associated with colds, and young children catch a lot of colds,” she said. “The other reason is that children’s Eustachian tubes function differently from those of an adult.” A child’s Eustachian tubes are more level than an adult’s, and therefore do not drain as well. When mucus and swelling occur because of a cold or other respiratory illness, it is even more difficult for fluid to drain out of the ear, according to the NIDCD

Can ear infections be prevented? “Preventing the common cold is the best way to prevent ear infections,” Dr. Irvin said. “Parents can teach their children to cover their cough and wash their hands.” However, the pediatrician said there’s really no way to prevent them completely, especially if the parent had chronic ear infections as a child.
When is an ear infection a serious problem? “Recurrent ear infections can lead to conductive hearing loss and speech delay,” she said. If your child has chronic ear infections and you believe there’s a problem with their hearing or speech, Dr. Irvin suggests asking your pediatrician to refer your child for a formal hearing evaluation and a pediatric Ear Nose and Throat specialist. “Early identification of hearing impairment is critical for a child’s optimal outcome with regard to expressive language and communication.” Dr. Irvin said hearing is a gift and every child should have the chance to experience it. “We need to embrace the gift and fill their ears with many loving words and beautiful sounds as we can.” Jessa McClure is a freelance writer, blogger, wife and mother of two.
