While the first day of Summer isn’t officially here until June 20th, most kids are out of school and ready to go on vacation. If your family is planning to Magazine leave town for some rest and relaxation, read Judy M. Miller’s article “Going Somewhere?” for good advice that will help you prepare your entire family in advance of the trip. For many kids, summertime also means party time. In this month’s Party Directory, Denise Yearian lays out “10 Tips to Planning Your Child’s Birthday Party”. June is also the time to pause and thank your dad. I’m happy with anything my kids get me for Father’s Day, but when it comes to my own parents, it’s always hard to find the right gift. This month, Kimberly Blaker’s article “A Day for Dad”, poses some very thoughtful ideas for how to celebrate Father’s Day that go beyond the typical new wallet or tie. I will never forget my first son’s addiction to his pacifier. It had to be the specific brand otherwise he didn’t like it and would have a meltdown. After our pediatrician advised us to wean him off, we threw them out and told him that the trash man took them. I know it wasn’t very creative. In the article “Parting with Pacifier” by Malia Jacobson, she explains why and how to wean your child from their “pacy habit.” And, as always check out our calendar for the latest events going on, from free movies to the new exhibits and shows that are in town. A DAY FOR DAD Make This Father’s Day One to Remember By Kimberly Blaker

Fathers play a significant part in children’s lives. They influence children’s self-esteem and school performance, are important role models, and among other meaningful roles, make fun-loving playmates. Father’s Day is just around the corner; so don’t be caught scrambling for the perfect way to show you care. Try some of these ideas, and make it a special day just for Dad that both of you will enjoy. Video Surprise – Make a “World’s Best Dad” video that he’ll treasure for years to come. Put on your brainstorming cap for your own ideas, or try some of these. On videotape, share special memories of your dad, sing to him, read him a poem, or do skits. Get the whole family involved and conduct interviews with each other with Dad as the main topic. Don’t forget your props such as a banner or collection of his prized possessions including sports trophies or equipment that tell who he is. Finally, be sure to let him know just how much he means to you. King for the Day – It isn’t everyday that dad is waited on hand and foot. Offer to be his loyal servant for the day, and bring him coffee and toast in bed; fetch his newspaper; lie out his clothes, bath towel, and mat; be host or hostess and serve 8

his beverages and snacks; clean up after him and anything else to give him the royal treatment. Memories of Dad – Purchase a scrapbook, and create a record of memories about your father and you. Include photos of special outings, events, and holidays you’ve had together and other memorabilia from family vacations and activities such as concert or sporting event ticket stubs, postcards, and brochures. Next to each photo or item, describe your memories of those times together with your father. A Man to Remember – Get your creative juices flowing, and write a poem for your dad. You need not be a poet to come up with a few thoughtful words to say how much he means. Describe the impact he’s had on your life, how he’s helped you to become the person you are today, and what he is to you. Then print it on stationary, matte and frame it. Musical Moment– Take your father to see his favorite band or performing artist, enjoy a jazz or blues festival, or pack up some lawn chairs, and enjoy a local concert-in-the-park. Togetherness Takes Two – Has your dad been putting off the dreaded task of cleaning out his attic, basement, or garage? Weekend Getaway – Get in touch with nature and each other on a camping trip for two. Either rough it in a tent or rent a mini cabin at a state park, and spend your weekend enjoying nature hikes, sight seeing, fishing, boating, playing cards and just taking it easy together.

Father’s Day Feast- As the old adage goes; the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So, treat dad to a mouth-watering meal on the bar-be-que. Fix him his favorite: steak, ribs, chicken, burgers, or chops for starters, and don’t forget the grilled potatoes or squash, garlic bread or rolls, fresh green beans or asparagus, sweet corn, potato salad, and last but not least, his favorite dessert. Treat Him Like a King – What better way to show your appreciation for all his hard work than to indulge him? Give your father a gift certificate for a professional massage, which will be sure to please. Just the Two of Us – Put together a photo collage of you and your father. There are many ways to do this. Find instructions at your nearby craft store and create a Decoupage photo collage, keep it simple with a multi-photo frame, or purchase a unique 3D Photo Collage frame which can be found through a number of stores online. Take a Stroll – Enjoy a peaceful walk together in the park or the country. Better yet, gather your bikes or roller blades, hit a scenic bike path, and enjoy the summer breeze. 10 Tips on Planning Your Child’s Birthday

Birthdays are milestones that mark another year of growing, another year of change. But for many parents, these milestones are more like millstones when faced with the daunting task of putting together their child’s birthday party. Following are 10 tips to help:

1. Get your child’s input.

Several weeks before your child’s birthday, ask him how he would like to celebrate. Give him parameters based on your time, budget and preferences. Discuss his interests and determine if the party can be centered on one of these.

2. Consider the options.

One way to host a party with your child’s interest is to have the event at home. Should you decide to choose this route, you’ll have two options: do it yourself or hire outside help. If you have time and desire to give the party yourself, the possibilities are unlimited.

3. Make a manageable guest list.

The recommended number of children will depend upon whether the party will be held inside or outdoors. If the weather is nice and you’d like to have it outside, you can easily invite 15 guests. However, if the party is indoors, limit it to no more than 10 children. Some experts suggest using a formula of 1 to 1 ½ children per your child’s age. For example, if your child is 4-years old, invite 4 to 6 friends; if 8-years old, have 8 to 12 guests. The key is to keep it manageable.

4. Time it right.

Unless the party is a sleep-over, keep it to two or three hours (1 1/2 hours for children 4 years and younger). Make a list of activities you are planning and the approximate length of time each one will take. Remember that a well-planned party allows for both quite and active play. PARTY DIRECTORY time to warm up to the setting, release energy during the party, and calm down before heading home. Since the children will be arriving at slightly different times, plan a simple but flexible activity to keep them busy and free you to welcome other arriving guests.

5. Decide on activities.

When selecting games, consider the number of children, their ages, and whether the games will be held inside or outdoors. Choose ones that are easy to explain, fun to play, and will involve all the children. Cooperative games are best because they take the spotlight off any one child and focus on the team as a whole. What’s most important is to be flexible. If the children aren’t enjoying themselves, stop, and move on to something else. And always plan more activities than you need.

6. Go for kid-fun grub.

When serving food, stick with kid-friendly basics—sandwiches, pizza, veggie strips and pretzels. If you want to make it festive, cut the sandwiches into interesting shapes, or turn the pizza into a clown face with pepperoni eyes, a cherry tomato nose and a strip of green pepper for the mouth. The cake can be special, too, by allowing the children to ice and decorate their own cupcake.

7. Ease up on decos.

Simple decorations can go a long way. A few helium balloons and crepe paper can make any room look festive. Choose party favors that are fun, but inexpensive such as a toy related to the party theme or a bag filled with a blend of fun-to-eat but healthy treats. For those wishing to spend a bit more, an activity, such as painting t-shirts or planting flowers in pots, is fun. Most important, be flexible, creative and stay within your budget.

8. Ask for helping hands.

If you are giving the party by yourself, get help on the big day. An extra pair of hands (or two or three!) is essential no matter what age the children are. As you prepare a guest list, ask a few close friends or relatives to come and help. If there are no willing volunteers, hire a teen. Chances are she needs the money and would enjoy the event.

9. Pick a party entertainer.

If you want to hire a party entertainer, get references from family and friends. Also, check local resources or contact a party retail center and ask for referrals. Once

If you would prefer to have the party at a local business, call to see if they offer packaged events based on your child’s interest. Before making the final decision, stop by the facility and watch a party underway. How smoothly is it run? Is the facility safe? Is it clean? Are the bathrooms easily accessible? Are the guests enjoying themselves? Is the host or hostess friendly and good with kids? Do the guests have plenty of time to enjoy the activities, or are they rushed from one event to another? Does the food look appealing? By taking the time to stop by, you’ll learn a lot more about this place than if you just make a phone call. Above all, remember that because your child’s birthday comes only once a year, it deserves recognition. Whatever you choose, make it special. Do you remember family vacations from when you were a child? Was packing done in a frenzy, and at the last minute? Or did you just calmly walk out the door with your family because your parents did all of the planning and packing? Growing up, my brothers and I did little to get ready, other than to straggle into the car during the wee hours of the morning. Here are some tips to prepare for a fun vacation that involves the entire family from planning through returning home. As a mom of four, there are tips I’ve been using and fine-tuning for close to two decades. These tips will help alleviate your stress in planning and preparation.

Invite Kid Input

What do members of your family enjoy? Start polling your kids on what they might like to do. What do they want to see? What are they curious about? We keep a dream list, a travel destination bucket list, in our family. Involve your children in the planning of activities and optional sight seeing; this gets them excited about the trip, and they might come up with some wonderful ideas you hadn’t thought of. One of our recent vacations included a biologist-led estuary kayak trip-an idea and request from our

passionate-about-science daughter. Everyone enjoyed it and we’re going to do it again this summer.

Encourage Research

Take into account your kids’ ages and stages, likes and dislikes. Visit destinations that offer a variety of activities and food options for you and your family. Take turns being the vacation leader. Some trips, like skiing, may have to wait until everyone can participate. Consider what each child’s interests and activity levels are. Kathy Besse, a former flight attendant and mother of two, encourages her kids to research destinations on the Internet, “My son is a history buff, so we try to include places of historical significance.” Water sports are a must-do with my kids, so we make sure to include a destination that includes water, even if that water ends up being a hotel pool in the dead of the Midwest winter. Get the maps out. Show them where you are considering traveling. Have each family member do research from the perspective of what they enjoy most. Even the youngest can be included in this. Pack Early, Pack Smart

Give your kids the job of packing for themselves. All family members should have a backpack or similar bag for their books, snacks, games, electronics, etc. They should also keep a change of clothes and, possibly, pajamas and a swimsuit within the knapsack. Bags get lost. This is also a great idea if your family is going to make an overnight stop on a long trip. Why unpack the entire car for a few things? My kids are so accustomed to packing their backpacks that they keep them partially packed at all times with a change of underwear, socks, travel-sized toiletries, and a plastic bag for dirty clothes. At least once every summer, when boredom eventually sets in, I rise early and knock on my kids’ bedroom doors, “Let’s go; thirty minutes to pack!” They’re up in no time packed and ready for a quick overnight to a destination we decide on as we drive.

Personalize Checklists

Create a general packing list for your trip and have the kids follow it. Leave a few lines for them to fill in with their favorites. Separate which items go into the suitcase versus the backpack for the plane or car, such as books or a Nintendo DS. Don’t forget to add batteries and chargers to the list. Leaving things behind is no fun, so keep the lists on your home computer to be reused and updated as needed. Pack the lists in the bags and refer to them when repacking for the return trip home. Use clipart or stickers as lists for children who can’t read yet, for example a picture of a swimsuit. For multiple items, repeat the clip art or stickers in a line, or if kids know their numbers by sight, put it in front of the clip art, for example, “4” and a picture of shorts. Kids love to pack themselves. When mine have packed, they put their open suitcases and backpacks, with their lists lying on top, in our hallway. This makes it easy for me to double-check. I do the final zip-up.

Be Ready, Early

Begin packing your bags several days before you leave. Have a staging area in your home where you can do this. We use our hallway. The kids fill their suitcases as I do laundry. If traveling by car, pack it the night before. Despite appearances, vans and SUV’s only have so much room to hold luggage and the extras. A cramped long ride in the car is miserable.

Pack Smart and Save Big

How “lean” can you pack? Unless you have a special membership, you will likely be charged for checking baggage. Inquire when you make your reservations. The costs add up quickly for extra checked bags with

hefty fee increases on overweight or oversized bags. (AirlineBagFees.com has a helpful chart of fees of domestics and international charges). With my family of six, these charges can be prohibitive. I much prefer to use that money on our vacation. You can get along with packing far less than you think. A good rule of thumb is to not pack more than each family member can carry and pull at the same time. My kids quickly learned to pack light. I layer my kids for flights; the planes are cold and many airlines charge for blankets and pillows, if they even offer them. If you have to pack on the heavy side (an extended trip or cold weather requiring heavier and bulkier clothing), under-pack a suitcase or two, to allow for last minute redistribution among the luggage at the airport.

Remember the Details That Matter

Here are a few small considerations that will make everyone’s trip happier and prevent annoying mini-disasters: Visit destinations that offer a variety of activities and food options for you and your family, and take turns being the vacation leader. Decide ahead of time which parent is handling documents and tickets. The other parent should have copies of the documents. Leave another set of copies at home, along

with copies of your credit cards and phone numbers in case cards or documents get lost or stolen-it happens. Carry baby wipes for everyone. These come in handy in many different situations - the wiping of hands and feet, cleaning up spills, sanitizing airplane tray tables, just to name a few. Give everyone their own pack with extras packed away for the return. And, don’t forget the tissues. For car trips, include some clean old towels and a few 20-gallon-sized trash bags. Sometimes, those disasters can be a bit messier than we imagined. When you stop, put the nasty towels inside the trash bag and dispose of. Carry a first-aid kit. Make sure everything is replenished and in-date. Have you ever had your luggage tear, a hem come loose, or a hole appear in that nice flotation device you packed? Pack a roll of duct tape; it has a multitude of uses. Bring gallon-sized zip lock bags along. My foresight was rewarded three years ago when we drove twelve hours home with two vomiting kids. Do a Trial Security Check Run and Security Overview You will be going through airport security if flying to your destination. Inform your children of what to expect before hand, and go over it several times. I encourage you to role-play as well. We’ve spent so much time teaching our kids about strangers and “good touch, bad touch.” So it is important

that we help our kids understand, in age-appropriate language, why total strangers (TSA agents) may be touching them inappropriately. Assure your children that you will be present, right next to them as security personnel are running their hands over them. Go over the removal of shoes and screening of themselves and their personal belongings. Lia Stallworth, a school counselor and mother of two, has her children wear slip-on shoes. Explain to the kids that they should be quiet, listen, stay with you, they can have something to drink after they complete the security check (our kids bring empty bottles, since there is no charge for the drinking fountain water), and that this is not a good time to have discussions about the state of the Middle East or weaponry and explosives. Ask your older sons to forgo the trendy sagging to alleviate any pants or shorts crumbling to the floor when belts are removed in the security area (this happened to my oldest years ago).

Help Yourself to Some Peace of Mind

Even though you practice and preach about it daily, you need to have another in-depth talk regarding safety. Older kids like to explore, so establish the rules and boundaries for the trip. Go over the buddy system and family emergency code, if you use them. Stallworth snaps a picture of her kids before every trip. “I take a picture of my kids with

my cell phone before we board the plane. It’s the most recent picture of them in case one of them should get lost.” If the family splits into smaller groups to do different activities, each group should have a cell phone. If traveling outside the U.S., go over drinking water and what food can be eaten and in what form. Also discuss “do not touch” of animals children raised in the U. S. commonly consider safe, like dogs and cats. There is no way of knowing if the animals one encounters are safe. If you have a critterlover like I do, explain that touching any critter is not safe.

Make Memories Kids love to have mementos of their trips. Encourage yours to get something unique that will remind them of their trip. “My son collects currency, coins, and rocks,” says Kathy Besse. She gives her kids disposable cameras, “The kids have a photo album that they add to. My daughter has a scrapbook. She keeps her pictures and postcards in it and writes about her trips as well.” Vacations are special family time. The more prepared you are and the more involved your entire family is, the more you will enjoy your trip. Safe travels!

Parting with the Pacifier How to Break the Habit By Malia Jacobson

Ready to help your child give up a pacifier? Here are some tips for navigating the tricky transition. Whether they’re crystal clear, neon-bright, or covered in rhinestones, pacifiers are the modern baby’s accessory of choice. Thanks to studies showing that they reduce the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), most pediatricians have given pacifiers the green light. A study in Pediatrics found that a whopping 68 percent of parents give them to their babies before six weeks of age. Babies aren’t the only ones who love them; parents quickly become addicted to the pacifier’s soothing effects on their offspring. Unfortunately, it often becomes a habit that overstays its welcome.

Why Wean?

While some children give up non-nutritive or comfort sucking on their own, others cling to the habit well into the preschool years. According to Lotus Su, D.D.S., of Pediatric Dental Associates, using a pacific too much or for too long can contribute to dental problems, including deformation the palate and shifting of the teeth, as well as mouth breathing and dry mouth, which may increase susceptibility to tooth decay. Many doctors and dentists recommend ending the habit before permanent front teeth begin to emerge, which can happen before kindergarten. “I recommend stopping pacifier use by age three,” says Dr. Su. “The earlier a pacifier habit is stopped, the less likely that there will be any dental problems.” Potential problems extend beyond the teeth. Pacifier use is associated with otitis media, or middle ear infections. Minor health upsets like gastrointestinal infections and oral thrush are also more commonly seen in pacifier users. Parents may be swayed by medical data and dentists’ recommendations, but kids often need some coaxing to give up the long-held habit. Guilt-inducing lectures about dental problems or germs may be counterproductive, causing them to dig in their heels. Instead, help them become confidently pacifier-free with these tactics. 20 Our Kids Magazine | June 2016

Before embarking on a pacifier-purge, check out some children’s books on the topic. After listening to stories like The Last Noo-Noo by Jill Murphy or Pacifiers Are Not Forever by Elizabeth Verdick, your child may be more receptive to the idea.

The Paci Fairy

Steal this idea from Supernanny Jo Frost: have your child place his pacifiers in a large envelope to mail to the “pacifier fairy.” Put the envelope in the mailbox together before bed. Once he’s asleep, swap the envelope for a new toy. When he wakes up, excitedly take him to the mailbox to find his new treasures.

Make the Cut

Snipping a small hole in a pacifier can help it lose its appeal quickly, encouraging a child to give it up on his own. Be sure to dispose of a broken pacifier promptly, because it can harbor bacteria or become a choking hazard if a child continues to use it.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Parents seeking the quickest route to pacifier-freedom can simply throw them all away. Kelly Stallings opted for the coldturkey approach with daughter Taylor. “The first night was rough, but after that, she didn’t care,” she says. Just make sure to get rid of each and every one, so your child isn’t tempted to relapse (and you’re not tempted to cave). No matter how stubbornly your child clings to a beloved binky, eventually it will be a thing of the past. Once your child is free of the pacifier habit, you’re free as well—from relentlessly searching for them, washing them, and buying them. Enjoy your well-earned liberation. At least, until the next must-have item comes along.

June 10-12 / Texas Folklife Festival: More than 40 different ethnic and cultural food booths, serving more than 150 culinary delights, will be available on the festival grounds. Along with food, the Festival presents a wide variety of craft demonstrations, educational activities, and fun for the whole family. There will be live entertainment on six stages, including Ballet Folklorico, Lebanese, Ukrainian, Hawaiian and Native American dancers; plus Country, Cajun, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tango and more music. More than 50 artisan-vendors and up-close opportunities to see craft demonstrators showing off their skills: Basket makers, weavers, bread bakers, wood carvers, blacksmiths and historical reenactors. Swimming Lessons

Being able to swim is an important skill for every child to have. Swimming is great exercise, it’s an important safety skill, and it’s a fun activity that can occupy children all summer long. The Parks and Recreation Department is able to offer free group lessons during the 2016 regular outdoor pool season thanks to the San Antonio Parks Foundation and presented by University Health Systems with Security Service Federal Credit Union as an additional partner. More than 2,300 free lessons will be offered. Group swimming lessons are offered for youth ages 4 and up as well as adults. Lessons are designed for beginning and intermediate skill levels. Group swimming lessons include six 45-minute lessons offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday over a two-week period. Session dates for summer 2016 are below. Times vary depending on the pool site with morning and evening sessions available.

“See Us, Hear Us, Know Us” Runs Through December “See Us, Hear Us, Know Us”, a traveling photography exhibition presented by Community First Health Plans featuring portraits and stories of 59 participants of Eva’s Heroes. In addition to individual portraits, the exhibition includes an audio component that expands on the participant’s life: his or her life goals, heroes and why he or she loves Eva’s Heroes. More than 55 national, regional and local companies will host the traveling photography exhibit at various community venues through December 2016. The exhibit and its corresponding audio narratives demonstrate to a broader community the everyday successes and dreams of teens and young adults with intellectual special needs. Mathletics brings together interactive exhibit features that get kids moving and exploring mathematical concepts like ratio, proportion, and scale. Complementing this exhibit and powering up kids learning, The DoSeum is launching the Mathletics Training Program, a summer math program that will get kids moving and outside, all while learning math! San Antonio Botanical Garden Storybook Houses presents five unique interpretations, selected from a

competitive field of submissions, which will be on display for Garden visitors to explore inside and out. See kid-sized, family-friendly Storybook Houses in this interactive spring exhibition. This engaging playhouse exhibit is the fourth collaboration between the Garden and area architects and designers. Area architects and design teams submitted entries for consideration, utilizing a wide array of styles and materials. A panel of judges representing the AIA, San Antonio Public Library and the Botanical Garden reviewed the designs and scored them based on a variety of criteria such as creativity of design and use/re-use of weather-resistant materials; focus on recycling, reuse or sustainability; accessibility; collaboration with others; and design appeal for all ages of visitors. The winning Storybook Houses entries include: Oh! The Places You’ll Go, San Antonio & the Beanstalk, Diary of a Worm, The Little House and Sleeping Beauty. Exhibit runs through July 10. Wings of the City showcases eight bronze sculptures by internationally renowned Mexican Artist Jorge Marín. Institute of Texan Cultures

The Life and Legacy of César E. Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and Farm Workers- is a student art exhibit from Columbia Heights Elementary School meant to capture the life and lessons of Civil Rights icons in art. Columbia Heights Elementary School students will pass along the lessons they have learned about civil rights leaders such as Dr. Marin Luther King Junior, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta through two special projects. “A Digital Exhibition of Martin Luther King, Jr.” is a dome show, utilizing the 26-screen Dome Theater to display student artworks dedicated to the Civil Rights leader’s work. “The Life and Legacy of César E. Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and Farm Workers” is an art exhibit telling stories of the battle for labor rights. Originally founded 13 years ago with the help of activist Jaime Martinez, the annual student art exhibit comes to the Institute of Texan Cultures as a part of the César E. Chávez March for Justice Week. The exhibit continues into the spring. Exhibit runs through June 5.

There are hands-on activity stations where the whole family can build arches, decipher hieroglyphs and learn drilling techniques. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed uses a combination of authentic artifacts along with multimedia and interactive, hands-on activities to reveal our deep ties to this astonishing civilization. The exhibition was designed to give visitors a glimpse at a cross-section of Maya life from divine kings who ruled powerful cities to the artisans and laborers who formed the backbone of Maya society. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see spectacular examples of Maya artistry made by masters of their craft, along with objects from everyday life combined with a look at the scientific work being carried out at key Maya sites across Central America and Mexico. Revealed experience with gallery interactives and Gallery Theater performances featuring Ixchel, the Maya goddess of fertility, motherhood and the moon. Splendor On The Range: American Indians And The Horse explores how life changed for American Indians after the Spanish brought the horse to North America in the 1500s. This fascinating exhibition, curated by Bruce Shackelford, looks at the culture and lifeways of tribes throughout the Plains and Southwest before and after the arrival of the horse. Experience this original, interactive Witte exhibit featuring a stunning array of artifacts from the museum’s unparalleled Native American Collection. Exhibit runs through August 21.
