My Mother’s nurture, guidance, and support is what I reflect on when confronted with a parenting moment with my own kids. I am grateful for all she has done and does for me. Children will be spending time in the water to cool off and beat the heat. Keep in mind that water safety is a huge responsibility. Mary Reilly-Magee is back with Magazine advice on how to keep your children safe when swimming. For some parents, the end of May is also the time to drop your kids off at summer camp. While your children may be excited and ready be dropped off, parents may be the ones who are not ready to ‘let go’. Ashley Talmadge’s article “Are You Parent-Ready?” gives parents some advice on what to do to feel more at ease with letting their children take their first steps to independence at summer camp. Denise Yearian’s article, “Last-Minute Tips Before Day Camp Starts”, will help you prepare for your child’s summer camp experience. The Big Give SA is set for May 3. Rebecca Asher has good advice on teaching your kids the importance of giving. Though this may not be the usual season for giving, it is a good opportunity for businesses and families to share. Mom: A Role to be Cherished By Gayla Grace

At 38 weeks pregnant, Katie eagerly awaited the birth of her first child. Her pregnancy had gone well and she looked forward to what lay ahead as she arrived for her routine doctor exam. With little warning, and a racing heart, she was ushered to a nearby hospital for a more extensive ultrasound. The doctor said the baby appeared to have quit growing and needed to be examined further. After several tests, Katie learned the baby girl she had carried for nine months would never be normal. Her baby’s heart had two chambers instead of four and likely had Down syndrome. Katie’s doctor gave her the option to abort, which she declined. Upon admittance to the hospital for delivery to begin, a final ultrasound was administered. Tragically, the heartbeat couldn’t be found. Katie’s baby girl, Bliss Nicole, had died in 8

utero. Katie was to endure delivery of a stillborn baby and cope with the devastating loss of her first child. We often take the privilege of motherhood for granted, instead of a role to be cherished. Women suffer through infertility, stillborn births, and miscarriages every day. Some women lose the opportunity to complete their mothering role because of illness or death. We’re blessed to be given the opportunity to bear and raise our children. It’s easy to overlook the important role we play, but the influence we have as mothers can’t be denied. We teach, we nurture, we counsel, we discipline, we taxi, we solve problems, we ease drama, we nurse wounds and more. have days that take flight. Before we’re ready, our babies begin to drive, graduate from high school, start college, and venture out on their own. Time runs out for those positive parenting moments we intended to have. The daily influences we take for granted to mold our children change to parenting snapshots via text messaging, late-night conversations, and crisis intervention. Motherhood provides meaning to life we wouldn’t experience otherwise. Although not easy, life without children wouldn’t be the same. The lessons we learn while raising children aren’t taught in school: how to make it through a long day after enduring a colicky baby all night, how to rid your child of lice without setting their hair on fire, how to stay calm when the attendance office reports your teen-ager has skipped school, or how to pay for unexpected accidents with a new driver. As our kids grow older, we learn how to let go when our 18-year-old leaves for college and how to move on when our young adult announces wedding plans. Mothers offer unending selflessness with little guarantee of what lies ahead. We endure heartache and disappointment; we celebrate victories and accomplishments. We refuse to give up when our child goes astray, or turn our back when our child rebels. The well-known saying relays it best: “No one loves me like my mother.” Motherhood never truly ends. Whether your mom lives next door or out-of-state, she’s always a phone call away. When my job ended in my young adult years, Mom was the first to know. When my children were born, she celebrated with me. When I endured a difficult divorce, she walked with me. When I struggled as a single parent, she encouraged me. When I celebrated marriage again with a new family, she congratulated me. Now, as my mom approaches her sunset years, I seek to be there for her. Our roles have reversed as I watch the effects of Alzheimer’s grip her failing mind. The caregiving role goes full circle: sacrificial love and devotion without end. My friend, Katie, cherishes the joy of birthing four healthy babies following the heartache of her firstborn. Grieving her loss as a young mother leaves her with unending appreciation for a role she’ll never take for granted. Guiding young lives blesses her days. As a mother, celebrate your role. Affirm your value and commit to be a positive influence as you guide and nurture your children. No one else can play the role only you have been granted. Happy Mother’s Day! Foster Families Offer Children In Need a World of Hope By Yvonne Vasquez

Every year in Texas, thousands of children are removed from their biological families because their home life has become unsafe for them. When this happens, they immediately enter the foster care system. Foster care refers to a state-based system tasked with caring for minor children when a court and a child protection agency determine that the minor’s parents cannot properly care for them. Children are usually placed in foster care due to abuse and/or neglect, but there are other reasons as well. These may include abandonment, incarceration, truancy or death. It is a situation in which a child must be cared for by people who are not the child’s parents and may not even be related. Foster children come from all walks of life. Most foster care begins with a plan to eventually place these foster children back with their original families. Unfortunately, these children face abuse and neglect on a daily basis due to an unstable living environment. The hard truth is that many people are 10

unwilling to treat children the way they should be treated. Still other parents face difficult and unforeseen circumstances in their lives that prevent them from being able to provide children with a safe and secure environment. Organizations that handle foster placement are required to be licensed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). Ideally, foster care is intended to be a short-term solution until a permanent placement can be made. You may wonder why placing a child with a foster family is preferred over keeping that child in an institutional setting. The reason is not too surprising. “The stress and anxiety that accompanies instability can have a direct impact on cognitive development,” warns the American Psychological Association. This situation can make learning difficult. By and large, child development professionals agree that children need stability. significant negative effects to their emotional and physical health. Foster home placement offers children a more structured and secure environment than an institution can provide. In order to maintain continuity in a child’s life, it is usually preferable to place a child in the care of a related family member such as an aunt, uncle or grandparent. But when these options are exhausted, that is when foster families fill a crucial need. Some of the more well-known foster care organizations in the San Antonio area include St. Joseph Children’s Home, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, St. Peter-St. Joseph Children’s Home, The Children’s Shelter, Boysville, Inc. and Pathways. In addition to foster services, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children (SJRC) recently announced that it has been granted a contract with the state of Texas to begin adoption services. In Bexar County, the need for foster families has become especially urgent. In fact, it has become a critical situation for so many children. Recently, a total of 2,700 children in need could not be placed because there were not enough licensed homes available for placement. To put this into perspective, imagine seeing the Majestic Theater with children in every seat. That is the number of children who are in need of foster home placement in San Antonio and nearby areas. The greatest need for foster families in Bexar County is for children ages ten and older. Unfortunately, placement of these children is often hindered because of misconceptions regarding their circumstances. “It tends to be more difficult to place AfricanAmerican and older children as well as those with cognitive disabilities,” explains Anais Biera Miracle, Vice President of External Affairs at The Children’s Shelter. It’s true that many of these children have experienced trauma in their lives and may exhibit trust issues. However, it’s extremely important to remember that they are still children who need love, patience and understanding. Some children will require mental health treatment to help them deal with their situation. But many others simply need a helping hand and someone to support them in their everyday lives. Other requirements that must be fulfilled include having adequate sleeping space, allowing no more than six children (including your own children) in the home, pet vaccinations, tuberculosis tests and various safety inspections. The reimbursement rate for the care of foster children is an average of $24 per day (approximately $600 per month). Medicaid is covered for any doctor visits that will be required. Foster placement can last anywhere from overnight to 18 months. The ultimate goal is to create the most favorable outcome for the children involved. Do you think you can offer a secure and loving home for a child who is in crisis? If you are considering being a foster parent, the first step is to attend an inquiry meeting in your area. Being responsible for a child requires a serious commitment and it’s definitely not for everybody. “These kids need normalcy. Some of these children have never had birthday parties or new clothes,” explains Biera Miracle. “At the end of the day, they will have good and bad days, like all children. They may not have the skill set to manage their own behaviors. We have techniques to help parents determine what is motivating the behavior.” Because foster children have often suffered previous physical abuse, corporal punishment of any kind is not allowed. Withholding food as punishment is also strictly prohibited. Making these children feel safe is essential to their healing process. Foster parenting comes with its own unique challenges, but it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have, knowing you have made a positive impact in the life of a child. We’ve all been there. Frantically grabbing all of the pool essentials (goggles, sunscreen, towels, that one toy) and rushing to leave for the family get together that’s been planned for weeks. You arrive, the kiddos jump out, already in their swim gear, and join cousins sitting pool-side. As you unload the gifts and your famous dip, suddenly you hear loud shrieks! Instantly, your mind starts racing, trying to decipher what’s going on. In that split second, with everything happening, you’ve lost track of your little ones…Where are they? Did someone get pushed into the deep end? Is your brother over by the pool, or did he go inside for the hotdogs? Who’s with your kids?!? Moments like this happen to ALL of us. As the weather warms up, it means only one thing – spring is here and summer is right around the corner; time to make water safety a top priority. Whether we’re water skiing, fishing, lounging on the beach, or enjoying a game of Marco Polo at the pool, it’s critical that we keep an eye on them at all times. Here are a few water safety tips we can all employ to make spending family time around the water safer for everyone.

Assess Water Risks

It doesn’t matter if we are at home or visiting a place for the first time, we always need to be aware of the risks associated with water and observe our surroundings. I believe water safety starts at home, way before encountering any water. We can evaluate potential water risks, establish our own boundaries, and communicate expectations with our little swimmers. While there are so many factors to think about, I always ask myself…What will the crowd situation be like? Will I need to navigate around the masses, or will we be in a more private, secluded area? How accessible is the water area, and are there any fall/slip hazards? And finally, will there be any adult supervision like a lifeguard or designated water watcher? While this may seem a bit overwhelming, taking the time to do a little homework prior to the family adventure can ultimately lead to a more enjoyable water experience, making the kiddos happy, and mom/dad happy.

Understand Your Child’s Swim Level

Our kiddos need to learn how to swim to be safer around water. I strongly suggest that parents look into a year-round swim lesson program with highly trained instructors for children of all ages, especially for little ones or beginners. Getting babies in the water early and frequently allows them to build the swim skills needed to be safer, and facilities their emotional and physical development. Swim lessons also strengthen their self-confidence and help build independence. How cool is that? Babies will begin to develop skills that will be helpful throughout their entire life! Aside from swim lessons, young children and nonswimmers need to be supervised within arm’s length around all water. This means us parents need to be willing and able to get in the water with our kiddos! Swimming is fabulous family time – and probably one of the precious “unplugged” moments we can have with our little ones these days.

Designate a Water Watcher

Any time there are little ones in or around water, there should be an adult Water Watcher designated to do nothing but watch them. This person must be a capable swimmer and cannot be distracted while performing this role. Rotate the duty among all available and responsible adults so that everyone gets to help out. Finally, give the Water Watcher on duty some sort of identifier (e.g. neon-colored hat or a vest, whistle, etc.) to indicate that he/she is in charge of watching the kiddos. Remember, no one is ever “safe” when in or around the water. However, through water safety education and by remembering the tips mentioned above, we can reduce the risk of drowning incidents and make sure that our families are prepared for water fun all summer long! Drop-Off Day at Summer Camp:

Are You ‘Parent-Ready?’ By Ashley Talmadge

A few decades ago, parents eagerly awaited DropOff Day at summer camp. For a few glorious weeks, they could happily ditch their roles of chauffeur, chef, and chaperone. They’d read a few more books, have an extra glass of wine with dinner, and simply enjoy a respite from the non-stop pace kids require. Today, we parents seem to have more difficulty “letting go.” Thanks to new communication technology, we’re accustomed to being in constant contact with our kids. And our news feed can make the world seem like a pretty scary place for children. How can we trust that our kids will be protected and get their needs met unless we’re overseeing every detail of their lives? But trust we must. In his book, Homesick and Happy, psychologist Michael Thompson concludes that children become more resilient, confident, competent, and independent when they have opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, and try new things out of their parents’ view. Overnight camp provides the perfect environment for such growth. Thompson states, “When you send a child off to camp, the gift you are giving him or her is to let go. You have to be willing… to let go of your importance in your child’s life to make space for someone else and new experiences.” Kevin Gordon is owner and director of Camp 14

Kupugani outside of Chicago, and has many years of experience working with first-time campers and their parents. When deciding whether to send a child to overnight summer camp, Gordon says it’s a good idea to separate a child’s readiness from a parent’s readiness. He says, “Sometimes well-meaning parents will communicate that their child isn’t ready, but in fact, it’s the parent that’s not quite there.” Erec Hillis, former camper, counselor, and now boys’ camp director at Camp Champions near Austin, Texas, agrees. He says, “It is our observation that 95 percent of kids finishing second grade can be successful for a three-week camp term, but only 5 percent of their parents think they can.” As a parent, memories of your child as baby, toddler, and preschooler may skew your understanding of her current capabilities. You may think, “How could she have grown up so fast?” Hillis suggests that parents begin to more accurately assess a child’s maturity by “taking note of things he or she can do now that weren’t so easy a year or two ago.” Good preparation can also help you manage parental uneasiness. Taking the time to select the right camp is the first step. Is the camp director approachable and available? Do staff members undergo a rigorous hiring and training process? CAMP GUIDE exciting physical opportunities for kids, while also managing risks? If you can answer these questions in the affirmative, you can remind yourself as Drop-Off Day approaches: “I’ve chosen a great camp. My child is in good hands, and he’ll get to try some really cool things.” The next step is to prepare your child. Both Gordon and Hillis say it’s a good idea to have children spend a few nights away from home with friends or relatives. Hillis says, “When they can do this successfully, they can probably also make it at camp.” In addition, some parents will find peace of mind in familiarizing their child with campnecessary skills, such as sorting laundry, stowing toiletries, and using a flashlight or headlamp. You can also acquaint yourself and your camper with the rules, daily schedule, and layout of buildings by downloading information and watching camp videos. Finally, it really helps for parents to make their own plans! Sign up for that hula hooping class. Plan a tour of the wine country. Or read ten classic novels and get a new tattoo. As Gordon says, “Just like your camper is trying new things and experiencing personal growth, you’re ready to do the same so you can be reenergized when he arrives home with great camp stories.” Above all, express confidence in your child’s ability to

succeed and have fun at camp. “Whatever you do, don’t project your uneasiness or anxiety on your child,” advises Hillis. If you have concerns about food, allergies, or medical issues, speak with the staff ahead of time. Read the parent brochure and be prepared to follow the guidelines regarding communication with your child during the camp session. “When in doubt, call the camp,” says Hillis. “The directors are there to talk to you, answer questions, and ease your concerns.” Drop-Off Day is often bittersweet. You may need to hide a few tears behind your dark glasses. But as Gordon reminds us, “ There are only limited camp years available for a child, so once the child is ready, it’s the parent’s job to get the parent ready.” Before you know it, Pick-Up Day will arrive. As you hug your tangle-haired, sodden-sneakered, somehow wiser child, you’ll think, “How could she have grown up so fast?” On the way home, the stories may bubble from her lips. Last-Minute Tips Before Day Camp Starts by Denise Yearian

Camp season is upon us. Before sending your child to day camp, here are 10 last-minute suggestions. 1. FILL ‘ER UP.

Bring one bottle of water that has been cooled in the refrigerator and a second one that has been in the freezer. As the day wears on, the frozen water will melt and provide cool refreshment for your child. Spray bottles are a great idea too. They keep the face and body cool in the hot sun.

5. NAME IT AND CLAIM IT.

Apply sunscreen to your child’s skin before he leaves home and send the tube along for later reapplication. Avoid sending tanning lotion with little or no SPF, or sunscreen that contains glitter as it can reflect light and cause sunburn. Consider sending along a hat for extra protection.

Any item brought to camp should have your child’s name, address and phone number on it in case it gets left behind. It also avoids confusion if identical items are brought by two children.

3. BUG OFF!

If your child is going to be out in a natural environment, he should wear insect repellent. Look for a lotion form that is safe for children; avoid sprays. When camp is over, follow up with a tick check for safe keeping. 4. ALL DECKED OUT.

One thing camp directors always see is children coming with the wrong dress. Some kids want to pick out their own clothes, but if they have chosen black jeans and a dark t-shirt, it may not be the best option. Dress your child for comfort, safety and appropriate temperatures. Proper shoes are important too, particularly if he is playing outside. Avoid strappy sandals and flip flops; opt for tennis shoes.

6. TIME OUT FROM TECH TOYS.

Do not bring valuable items such as handheld games or cell phones. Day camp programs are designed to provide an enriching experience, and your child should be engaging in these activities rather than playing with electronics. If these items are brought, they may be confiscated and returned at the end of the day in hopes your child gets the message. 7. PILLS, PAINS AND OTHER PROBLEMS.

All camps have forms for parents to list medications their child is on. But if you take your child off a medication for the summer, the camp needs to know that too, because it could cause an extreme change in behavior. Allergies are another issue to make counselors aware of, be it insect or food related. Equally

Camps look out for the physical and emotional needs of a child, so the more information you provide, the better equipped they will be. 8. HELP IS ON THE WAY!

Having an emergency contact person is vital. Even more important is that the designated person knows you have written her name down. Every year camps have situations where they call the emergency contact person and she was not informed she was designated as such. Before listing a person’s name on the form, let her know first. 9. BEEF YER’ BRAIN.

Read the materials the camp gives you—policies, procedures and planned activities. If you know what to expect and what is expected of you, things will run much smoother. Most camps have a weekly schedule so parents know what the upcoming activities are. Talk with your child about the activities planned.

If she cannot participate because of health reasons, make sure you (not your child!) inform the camp. 10. GETTING TO KNOW YOU.

Find out if there is an open house where you can meet the staff and see the facility prior to camp. If not, make other arrangements to introduce yourself to those who will be caring for your child. It is important for the camp directors and counselors to know you so they can keep you informed on how things are going for your child at camp. Finally, encourage your child to enjoy the experience. Mark the first day of camp on the family calendar and do a countdown. Help your child develop a checklist of items needed. And don’t forget to share your own camp stories. The Importance of Teaching Kids to Give By Rebecca Asher

The ‘Elf on the Shelf’ was put away months ago, and donation drives are far and few between, so how do we teach our kids about the importance of giving? It’s natural to teach our children manners, to say please and thank you, and to be courteous and respectful of others. Those lessons are not learned overnight, but rather instilled at a young age and repeatedly ingrained as our kids grow into adults. It’s important then, to infuse lessons of service, contribution and philanthropy into the hearts and minds of our future leaders. We can start by teaching our children about the act of giving, not to seek material items, but rather give out of gratitude and grace.

The Lessons of Giving

Creating future philanthropists is simpler than it seems. By being an example for your children, you can have a great impact on their future giving habits. If your children see you taking time out of your day to help others, it becomes a normal habit and an expectation they set for themselves. Small acts of kindness, such as asking them to pick out a few toys they no longer play with to give to a less fortunate child or offering to get the mail for a elderly neighbor who may have trouble getting around are simple ways to teach selfless behavior. When you do things like hold the door open for a stranger, give a quarter to the woman in the grocery line in front of you who is frantically searching in her coin purse or just pick up litter while you’re at the park, you are showing your children that you can make the world a slightly better place with the smallest gesture and best intentions. You are showing them that giving isn’t just during Christmas, it is a daily practice we should all participate in any way we can. When children can see what their giving can do, it leaves a lasting effect. Seeing vegetables grow in a community garden that they’ve planted, or a smile on the face of another child, when getting a gift they otherwise wouldn’t have gotten; those moments are the ones to instill the desire to give in children. Participating in events like the upcoming 3rd Annual Big Give S.A., is a great way to show children how their contributions, no matter how small can make a huge difference. The Big Give S.A. donation match shows children that even a small donation can become a lot and what they contribute to matters. This year, the Big Give S.A. will take place on May 3. The

purpose of this 24-hour event is to increase the public’s awareness of the impact of local nonprofits. It also connects donors with their local nonprofits, and builds a relationship where the donor can continue to give back. The Big Give S.A. was created to make donating fun and accessible. Donors make their gifts at thebiggivesa.org, which offers searchable profiles of all the participating nonprofits. All donations must be made through the website during the 24-hour period. “Last year we had over 800 nonprofits participating in this community-wide event. It was exciting to see donations pour in from not only South Texas but across the country”, said Scott McAninch, Executive Director of The Nonprofit Council. “This year, our goal is to have 1,000 nonprofits take part”. The Big Give S.A. includes Bexar County and 13 counties in South Texas, and is led by the Nonprofit Council and the San Antonio Area Foundation. These organizations work with private foundations, corporations, media partners, and the broader community to help The Big Give S.A. meet three main goals. These goals are to move the San Antonio community forward by encouraging a collective impact of raising money, help our communities progress forward by investing strategically in Bexar and surrounding county nonprofits, and encourage giving by leveraging the giving with matched funds and prize incentives. Last year the event generated an impressive $4.3 million in 24 hours. For 2016, the goal is to raise $6 million. The Big Give S.A. is part of the national day of giving called Give Local America. More than 80 communities across the country are coming together to give big on May 3. The Big Give S.A. is just one more way to show the next generation what it means to give. May 4-10 / The Children’s International Puppet Festival: The Children’s International Puppet Festival: A special event of the Children’s Fine Arts Series, this is the only children’s international puppet festival in the US and it features 45 performances by six different companies. Beyond Rubik’s Cube is a new exhibit that celebrates the world’s most enduring puzzle in an entertaining, interactive setting. Solve, play, and have fun, all in the ultimate hands-on exhibit. The multimillion-dollar exhibition invites audiences to examine why a small puzzle became, and remains, a phenomenon that resonates with a global audience and connects to fields across the spectrum of human creativity. The three exhibition zones: Play, Invent, and Inspire, offer access points for guests of all ages, backgrounds, and interests as they showcase the art, invention, and scientific exploration that have sprung from Ernő Rubik’s timeless invention. Guests can see how the Cube inspires them artistically by composing their own haiku using the Haikube; engineering a musical masterpiece in Cube Symphony; and contributing to the giant Collaborative Mosiac made of entirely of Rubik’s Cubes. Engineering buffs should not miss the Giant Working Cube, which, at 10 feet high, lets visitors see the internal mechanism that makes the Cube work. A Cube-solving robot solves guests’ scrambled Cubes at Robot Race. Twisty Puzzle Design brings people together at a multi-touch digital table to design and test puzzles of their own with other guests. Fans of pop culture need to check out Cube Culture, a video installation that highlights the many films and television shows where the Cube has been featured, from Wall-E to “Saturday Night Live”. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed is the first exhibition at the Witte’s new Mays Family Center and the largest exhibition to be brought to a San Antonio museum in the city’s history. The Maya are one of the most sophisticated and powerful civilizations of all time and archaeologists are sharing the secrets about the Maya for the first time in a singular and unforgettable museum experience. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed brings together hundreds of authentic artifacts displayed in more than a half-dozen immersive environments. In this 10,000 square foot exhibit, visitors will have the opportunity to learn how the Maya built their towering temples and created their intricate calendar system. There are hands-on activity stations where the whole family can build arches, decipher hieroglyphs and learn drilling techniques. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed uses a combination of authentic artifacts along with multimedia and interactive, hands-on activities to reveal our deep ties to this astonishing civilization. The exhibition was designed to give visitors a glimpse at a cross-section of Maya life from divine kings who ruled powerful cities to the artisans and laborers who formed the backbone of Maya society. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see spectacular examples of Maya artistry made by masters of their craft, along with objects from everyday life combined with a look at the scientific work being carried out at key Maya sites across Central America and Mexico. The Witte Museum has enhanced the Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed experience with gallery interactives and Gallery Theater performances featuring Ixchel, the Maya goddess of fertility, motherhood and the moon. Visitors will be able to follow Ixchel through the exhibit and learn how the Maya charted and predicted astronomical phenomena. Exhibit runs May 14 through September 5. Splendor On The Range: American Indians And The Horse explores how life changed for American Indians after the Spanish brought the horse to North America in the 1500s. This fascinating exhibition, curated by Bruce Shackelford, looks at the culture and lifeways of tribes throughout the Plains and Southwest before and after the arrival of the horse. Experience this original, interactive Witte exhibit featuring a stunning array of artifacts from the museum’s unparalleled Native American Collection. Exhibit runs through August 21. S.A.Fari Adventurers: Although similarly structured to the S.A.Fari Kids and S.A.Fari Explorer clubs, the new Adventurers program is designed specifically for middle and junior high students who are really interested in animals, the environment and the Zoo. Like the other programs, participants will discuss and investigate a topic, meet animals and tour the Zoo, but will also have the opportunity to talk to Zoo Experts and explore their passions and questions.
