Happy Mother’s Day I would like to welcome Amy Sugarman, mother of three, to the Our Kids Magazine family. Amy’s family has a history with our magazine as her mother, Carol Sugarman, worked for the magazine in the 90’s. Now it’s come full circle with her daughter contributing as well. For the month of May, we have two features celebrating moms. In Christina Katz’ article, “Momfidence”, she gives advice about how to handle the stresses of motherhood. In another “mom-centered” piece, Pam Molnar lists “A Dozen Fascinating Facts about Motherhood”, some of which may surprise you. With so many books and so much information on the internet about raising your kids, differing opinions and information overload can lead to a lot of second guessing about whether you’re doing it right. One thing most experts agree on is that you should never compare your kids. They will all love, behave and excel differently in many ways and recognizing this can help you avoid falling into the comparison trap. This month, Sarah Lyons explains some strategies to battle the urge to compare your kids to one another and how to embrace their differences. With the school year almost out, Janeen Lewis gives “10 Ways to Help Your Child Stay Focused” in her article “Finish the School Year Strong.” For those of you who are still looking for activity options for your kids this summer break, check out our last camp issue for the year. Also, in this month’s camp section, Denise Morrison Yearian goes over the steps in making a “Summer Camp Memento” that your child can cherish forever. Next month, our annual Childcare Preschool Finder gets a new name: “BabyTots”! This year the “BabyTots” issue will be accompanied by a BABYTOTS EXPO on June 25th at Rolling Oaks Mall where families with children ages birth to 5 years old can get information about parenting resources and services. Be sure to save the date and join us for many free activities including face painting, balloon artist, music, games and much more. There will also be a Diaper Derby and prize drawings. Last but not least, be sure to check out our calendar this month featuring The Children’s International Puppet Festival and the America’s Armed Forces River Parade. Don’t miss the Children’s Theatre section as there are several different productions this month for the kiddos.

Momfidence! By Christina Katz
Address Your Needs & Stand Strong, Mom
Imagine a mom standing in a superhero pose: hands cocked on hips, chest out, and chin jutting up towards the sky. Chances are good that this is not how you feel every day, mom. In fact, you may notice that you rarely feel this way. Why is it that motherhood, a status so desired, can often seem as challenging as it is wonderful? Once a baby is born, our lives are no longer our own. We are transformed. We have much more on our hands than a new mouth to feed. According to the IRS, we have a new dependent. We are no longer an individual, or even a couple, and our scope of responsibilities expands to small group status. No wonder moms often feel overwhelmed and insecure. What do veteran moms know that can help new moms feel reassured? Perhaps, instead of saying, “Congratulations on your new arrival,” we should say, “Welcome to the ranks of confident mothers. Here are our insider secrets.”
Give Yourself Pep Talks. The first few months-okay, years-of motherhood can be unsettling. Your little one needs you so completely and is growing and changing so quickly. Merely keeping up can feel challenging. Expect motherhood to put you to the test. You are up for it. You can do this. Take excellent care of yourself and avail yourself to all of your newborn›s needs. As you do, your baby will get off to a secure start in the world. Repeat: I feel overwhelmed and that’s okay. This feeling will pass once I admit it to someone and keep carrying on. 6
Our Kids Magazine | May 2017
Practice Self-acceptance. With so much time going to baby and what little time is left going to practical duties, appearances may slip a bit. So why not lower the stakes? Wear clothing that fits comfortably, even if it›s not as fashionable as usual. Get your hair cut in a way that won›t demand styling for a while. Forego makeup and appreciate your natural glow. You can still get dressed up for an occasional date night or to socialize with friends. But on stay-at-home days, simplify your needs and save time and energy. Repeat: I look good enough to take care of this baby. I can let go of impressing the outside world temporarily and simply focus on meeting our needs.
Expect Co-parenting. Feedings, diaper changes, daily logistics, oh my! No mom can raise a child on her own. So if you are partnered, it›s important to co-parent. This means that you share care for your growing baby. And don›t think co-parenting will be a drag. Think of how much you will learn about each other. Start having conversations on an ongoing basis about how to juggle responsibilities. Repeat: Sometimes co-parenting is confusing. But if we take time to discuss our parenting hopes, dreams, and needs as we go, everyone’s desires will get addressed.
Weave A Network Of Support. They say it takes a village to raise a child and this is true, if parents are going to keep their sanity. You may think needing help is a sign of your deficiencies. But flip this FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
thinking on its head. Creating a strong yet flexible network of supporters is your primary job as a new mother. Research resources at your disposal and do not hesitate to ask veteran moms who live in your area what was helpful to them. Don›t stop until you create an extended team of support. Repeat: There are ample services available in my area for pregnant women and new mothers if I seek them out. We can find all the resources we need.
Be Calmly Informed. If you suspect there is a problem with your baby, don›t wait for matters to worsen before you act. Place a few inquiries by phone, so you can determine if you need to take any steps. Illnesses can progress swiftly in infants, and you might miss early signs and end up in the emergency room at 3 a.m. Keep a bevy of parenting books within reach, try swiftly polling other parenting on social media, and directly consult those more experienced when something concerning comes up. Above all, trust your instincts. Repeat: There is nothing wrong with asking questions. When I have a concern, the input of informed friends and professionals can quickly set my worst fears straight.
Stand Up For Yourself. Vulnerability is common feeling among new moms. Chalk it up to all the changes going on in your life plus fluctuating hormones. You may feel uncertain, confused, even lost sometimes. You may also find yourself on the receiving end of a barrage of advice, some of it unsolicited. Try not to get worked up about those who seem to know it all. They are usually well-meaning folks who are trying to help. And if their help is having the opposite effect, you can and should let them know how you feel. Repeat: When I am feeling shaky, and others are making me feel worse, I can simply say, “I am not looking for any more input at this time, but thanks for trying to help.”
Keep Your Balance. A mother›s life is not typically full of long stretches of free time. One baby needs a lot of attention and may sleep little. When you have more than one child, finding alone time becomes tricky. Smart moms learn how to find rest and relaxation in the nooks and crannies of each day. They accept that a messier home than usual is totally understandable. They remember that their happiness deserves preserving as much as possible. Repeat: When I take excellent care of myself I can go from overwhelmed to confident more easily. I value my own company, no matter how scarce, more than ever.
Author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz remembers the jumble of feelings that came with becoming a mother. She wants to remind all new moms that they really do pass. Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

Finish the School Year Strong 10 Ways to Help Your Child Stay Focused By Janeen Lewis
Longer days. Beautiful weather. Children itching for summer. In the middle of spring, it’s hard to keep kids focused on school. But you may find that a strong finish now will lead to a good start in a new school year in the fall. Here are 10 tips to keep your child on the path to the finish line.
1. Send the message that school is a priority. Communicate to children that school is important. Continue to read with them, ask about homework, and take an interest in what they are learning. Research one of their school topics to extend the discussion at home or visit the library to find more books.
2. Set a goal. Help your child set an academic goal they can achieve during the last weeks of school. Maybe they want to turn a B into an A, master all their multiplication tables or read a thousand pages. If they meet their 8
Our Kids Magazine | May 2017
goal, reward them with something simple like ice cream or a new school supply or book.
3. Stay on Schedule. Kids crave structure and knowing what to expect, so spring is a good time to keep routines like homework time, dinner time, and bed time. With spring sporting events like late baseball and neighborhood pick-up games, it is hard to keep kids on track. But make a conscious effort to do it as much as possible.
4. Replace supplies. By now your child’s notebooks, folders, pencils and crayons probably look worn out. Replacing these inexpensive items can be a pick-me-up that motivates your child. However, try to save big purchases like back packs and lunchboxes for the new school year.
5. Set up an outdoor classroom. Sometimes changing location gives a child that FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
second wind they need to make it to the finish line. Let children do homework outdoors for rewards while they work. When math problems are completed correctly, they can take a walk or ride bikes. When done reading, they can pass the football or shoot hoops. Observe the family garden during study breaks.
8. Get next year’s supply list.
6. Hold an end of the year countdown. There are many ways to count down the days until the end of the school year. Mark off days on a calendar or put Popsicle sticks or marbles in a jar and remove one each day. You can have a jar of treats that match the number of days of school left. Each day when your child finishes their homework, they can have a countdown treat.
It’s easy to throw the backpack in the corner and not think about it again until school starts in the fall. Resist that temptation, and clean it out the last day that your child uses it. You may find important papers, a note from the teacher, or unused school supplies. Designate a place for the supplies, and go “shopping” in your leftovers before purchasing new supplies for the next year.
7. Pick out a teacher gift.
10. Celebrate.
Teachers work hard, and it’s good to show appreciation for them. With all the end of the school year events, planning a teacher gift may get shoved to the bottom of the to-do list, so plan ahead. Teachers love gift cards to their favorite teacher store, coffee house or restaurant. And gifts don’t have to be expensive. I’m a teacher and my favorite gifts are handwritten notes and cards from my students.
Have a dance party in your living room, picnic at the park or create a special family dinner. Enjoy a cookout with a backyard projector movie or visit the neighborhood pool. If in doubt, ask the kids. They’ll give great input about how they want to start their summer break!
If you receive next year’s list before the end of the school year, post it on the refrigerator, and when supplies go on sale during the summer, be ready to purchase them.
9. Clean out the backpack on the last day.

CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Summer Camp Memento By Denise Morrison Yearian
For many young campers, there is often an abundance of excitement prior to attending camp. But there may also be a big letdown once the experience is over. To help children handle before- and aftercamp transitions, have them create a summer camp memory book. All it takes is a few sheets of card stock, construction paper, markers, a computer, photographs and a handful of memories.
Great expectations…
Several weeks before camp starts, have your child gather card stock and begin assembling the book. Page headings and subheadings can be created on the computer or handwritten. These pages can then be mounted onto colored construction paper, if desired. Here are a few entry ideas to get him started. Some pages can be filled in prior to leaving. Others will need to be added to after the experience is over.
On the cover…
On the first page have your child type or write “Summer Camp Memory Book,” along with his name, 10
Our Kids Magazine | May 2017
age, name of camp and dates of attendance. Then decorate the border.
Gearing up... This page should feature at least two entries, “What I did to prepare for camp” and “Things I packed.” Have him include a series of lines after the second entry for writing in his packing list. (Note this list can also be used to help your child remember to pack all his belongings before returning home.)
Point of contact… Your child may want to include pages for keeping in touch with friends and loved ones. Have him create one entry titled “Letters to Send” that lists names and addresses of people he wants to write letters to while he’s away. Another entry could include “Letters and Packages Received.” One way to store letters he receives is to create a pocket by cutting an extra piece of cardstock in half and attaching it to the page with staples. Finally have him create a page called “Keep in Touch” with lines for FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

Who says the fun begins at the campground? This page should include things that happened along the way. Your child can format these entries before leaving home and either fill in the pages on the way or when he returns home. Headings could include “How long it took to drive to camp,” “Who took me,” “How I got there,” “Who went to camp with me,” “Unusual things we saw en route” and “Stops along the way.” You may even consider adding a second page with similar entries for the ride home.
At first glimpse…
Be sure your child includes a page for first impressions of camp: “What I did when I got there,” “How I felt upon arrival—excited, nervous, scared, etc.,” “Initial impressions of counselors and bunkmates” and “Other new people I met.” Again these pages can be filled in at camp or once he returns home.

The good, the bad and the ugly…
What is camp without superlatives? These pages should list the best and worst experiences: “Best food at camp,” “Worst food at camp,” “My favorite activity,” “New friends I made,” “My best camp friend,” “My favorite counselor,” “What new things I learned,” “The funniest thing that happened at camp,” “The worst thing that happened at camp” and “Overall best part of camp.” Have your child leave plenty of room to embellish with descriptions and stories.

Be sure to give your child a camera and remind him to take a lot of pictures throughout his stay. Also take a few pictures of him packing and getting to and from camp. When he returns he can fill in the pages, paste in photos and illustrate other experiences. To assemble the book, bind the pages together with a three-hole punch and secure with brads or yarn. How to Protect Your Child’s Skin All Summer Long By Gayla Grace
Summertime memories are often created in the sun. What better way to escape the routine and enjoy the benefits of warmer temperatures? As you bring out the shorts and bathing suits, however, don’t forget to consider the damaging rays of the sun and how to protect your child’s skin all summer long. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer, the most common form of cancer, during their lifetime. Although childhood sunburns seem innocent and a part of summertime

fun, they increase the risk of skin cancer as an adult. If you take the right precautions, however, skin cancer is highly preventable. It starts with preventing childhood sunburns, particularly during the summer months, when most of the damage to our skin occurs. Dr. Sarah Glorioso, dermatologist at Ark-La-Tex Dermatology in Shreveport, LA, gives five tips to help protect your child’s skin and keep it beautiful throughout the hot months of summer: Wear your sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every single day, SPF 30 or above is best, whether you’re planning on an outdoor activity or not. Also, be sure to apply liberally. “Most people don’t use an adequate amount,” says Glorioso. “You need a shot glass full each application to cover arms, legs, face, and chest when outdoors and you need to reapply every two hours.” Lotions often work better than sprays because they last longer and have increased coverage. Apply 30 minutes before going out and if you’re going to the pool, make sure it’s water-resistant. Don’t forget to apply Have fun playing drums and percussion

CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES sunscreen to the tops of the feet and the ears also-areas that are often overlooked that burn easily. Invest in sun protective clothing. “I, personally, am a big fan of sun protective clothing,” says Glorioso-a great reminder for kids who play outdoor sports with repeated exposure to damaging rays. “Women forget about their chest and men forget about their arms; sun protective clothing prevents constant re-applying when outdoors.” A wide-brimmed hat for fair-skinned kids also helps protect the face and neck. Although baseball caps are popular with kids, they don’t protect the neck and the ears. Don’t forget your lips. Our lips are important too and we need a chap stick with an SPF of at least 15 and preferably 30 or above to avoid skin cancer on the lips, a form of cancer we often don’t think about. Fever blisters are also a painful malady from sunburned lips. Seek shade when possible. An umbrella, a pop up tent, or even the shade of a tree can help protect your child’s skin during the period of the sun’s greatest intensity, generally considered between 10 am and 4 pm. Cloudy days also create damaging rays that must be considered. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends babies be completely shielded from the sun for the first six months due to their sensitive skin and suggests waiting until they’re six months of age to introduce sunscreen (skincancer.org). Stay out of the tanning bed. Although tweens and teens might enjoy the ease and results they get from a tanning bed, spray tans and sunless tanning lotions offer easily

accessible options without negative effects. With so many alternative ways to gain a little color on their skin without harmful consequences, parents should discourage tanning beds altogether. Don’t think the color protects them from sun damage, however; the same rules apply with beautifully tanned skin from a bottle. Our eyes need protection too. Glorioso recommends a polarized brand of sunglasses to protect against melanoma in the eyes and an increased risk of cataracts later in life from excess sun exposure. Look for sunglasses that wrap around and block UVA and UVB rays as much as possible. Some people rationalize sun exposure to a need for Vitamin D, but “we promote getting Vitamin D through food sources,” says Glorioso. “The American Academy of Dermatologists feels you can get adequate amounts of Vitamin D by eating foods high in Vitamin D or taking a supplement, if necessary.” The outdoors offers fun adventures for our kids and healthy options for their exercise needs all summer long. But their skin is precious. Keep it beautiful now and for years to come with proper precautions and the right kind of sun protection every day. Bio: Gayla Grace, a wife and mom to five kids, writes and speaks on family and stepfamily issues. A skin cancer survivor from too much sun as a child, she understands the importance of skin protection for children.

A Dozen Fascinating Facts about Motherhood By Pam Molnar
Mothers, those tireless beacons of love and support, were given the 2nd Sunday in May as a special day of recognition by Congress in 1914. Since then, we have celebrated mothers for their strength, persistence and unconditional love. This year, it falls on May 14th. Families have different needs, challenges and circumstances and without a guidebook, a mother has to adapt as her family grows. Mothers are fascinating creatures. Each and every one sculpts the world in the way she raises her children. Did you know? 1. There are 85 million mothers in the world. According to a U.S. Census report, over 43 million mothers live in the United States alone. The latest numbers show that 3.9 million women between the ages of 15 and 50 gave birth in 2015. 2. The average age of a first-time mom in 2014 was 26.3. That is up from 24.9 just 15 years ago. The trend of older first time mothers is expected to climb due to a decline in teen pregnancies, which have fallen from 23% in 1999 to 13% in 2014. Experts believe that sex education and teen use of birth control are driving the decline. 28
Our Kids Magazine | May 2017
3. The great debate in recent years has been about whether a mother should stay at home to raise her children or continue to work while her children are with another caregiver during the day. According to Pew Research analysis, 29% of mothers stay home with their children, a number that is rooted in demographic, economic and societal factors. Since 1967 the number of stay-at-home mothers has steadily decreased from 49% to its low of 23% in 1999. 4. The majority of mothers, roughly 70%, work part or full time outside of the home. And while that number has increased by 20% over the past 50 years, women’s contribution to their household income has only increased by 11%. The average daycare cost for a baby is $3,582 to $18,773 per year according to the National Association for Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies. Those costs have gone up a drastic 70% since 1985. 5. Single mothers make up 9.9 million women living with at least one child under 18 in the U.S. That number is up 2.2 million from a study done in 1985. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
Single mothers are included in both the stay at home and working mother groups due to unemployment and cohabitating. 6. Of the 3.9 million moms giving birth in the U.S. in 2014, 135,336 gave birth to twins – a birth rate of 33.9 per 1000 live births. Triplets or higher multiples make up one in every 880 births, a decrease of 41% since its peak in 1998. 7. The cost of the hospital stay for delivering a baby, including pre-natal and post-natal care is $8,802 according to a March of Dimes study. A domestic adoption in the United States costs between $34,093 and $39,966. While infertility has many variables, the average price of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle is $12,400. 8. No matter how a baby arrives, the costs don’t end there. According to CNN Money in January 2017, the average middle income family will spend $233,610 to raise a child born in 2015. This number does not include a college education or a child that has special needs. 9. According to Baby Center, the five most popular girl’s names in 2017 are Emma, Olivia, Isabella, Ava and
Sophia. For boys, the names are Liam, Noah, Mason, Ethan and Lucas. 10. Speaking of popularity, did you know that September is the most popular month to give birth? A study from 2014 shows September 12, 18, 25 and 26 as the most popular birthdates. Most newborns are born on a Tuesday, while Sundays have the least amount of births. 11. World Bank data from 2014 shows the global sex ratio is 107 boys born for every 100 girls. In the United States, the average birth weight is 7 ¼ lbs with a height of 19.5 inches long, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. 12. So how do we celebrate our moms on Mother’s Day? According to Statistic Brain, Americans spend $20.7 billion dollars on Mother’s Day - $1.9 billion of that is just for flowers. The average consumer spends $168.94 with homemade gifts topping the list followed by dinner, greeting cards, gift cards and flowers. Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three. Motherhood is the hardest and most rewarding job she has ever held.

Compare
Don’t By Sarah Lyons
As a mother of six children, I have found myself comparing one child to another many times. Even though I know their physical, emotional, and intellectual development will progress at a rate that is unique to each child and each will have their own strengths and weaknesses, when you are in the middle of a two-yearold’s tantrum over a seemingly trivial problem, it is hard not to think “Your sister never did this.” Parents often battle the urge to compare one child to another. It is a natural reaction considering we use comparisons to make decisions involving nearly every other aspect of our lives. When dealing with two or more children we must do the exact opposite of this natural tendency. “This was hard for me when my son was younger. He had several developmental delays and I would struggle with comparing him to where his sister was at that age.” says Ashley Clark, a mother of two. “I knew it wasn’t healthy for any of us and I had to let it go.” Comparing siblings can have negative effects because it can create jealousy, sibling rivalry, feelings of selfdoubt, and have negative effects on the parent-child relationship as a whole. We know each child is unique, with their own gifts, struggles, and personality, which all affect how they grow, learn, and develop, but how do we 30
Our Kids Magazine | May 2017
learn to appreciate these differences rather than compare them?
Identify their strengths
When the urge to compare your children arises, identify the strengths of each child. One may have an excellent sense of coordination and therefore may excel in physical development and later, in sports. Another child may have no interest in sports but have a knack for listening to others and perceiving how they are feeling. Compassion and caretaking may come natural to a child with these strengths. Elizabeth DeArmond, mother of four, says “It helps to see how their differences help all of us as a whole. We balance each other out.” While taking notes on strengths, acknowledge areas where each child may struggle and allow more patience and instruction in this area without putting the child down for their weaknesses. We are all different and have strengths and struggles, we just need to learn to embrace them for ourselves and our children. As your child grows, learn to keep your expectations in line with their abilities and interests.
Focus on the child’s efforts
Instead of comparing one child’s struggles to another child’s successes, try to focus on each individual FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
child’s efforts and improvements. “I have to remind myself that the kids are all different and continue to train them accordingly. Eventually they will mature at their own pace and will ultimately grow into productive independent adults.” says Kelly Lawton, mother of five. Things come easily to some people, while others put in lots of hard work to gain the same result. Instead of noting the ease which one child can accomplish tasks, take note and celebrate the child who is putting in the most effort and congratulate them on any improvements made. “Once I embraced their differences,” says Clark “I could appreciate where they are as little people.”
learn to see the individuality in our children. “My twin girls are emotionally different which has led me to parent each one differently. The sensitive one needs gentle corrections while the other responds better to timeouts and words of affirmation.” says mom Jennifer Klindworth. “When we have the chance, we separate them and go on outings for one on one time. It is amazing how different they are when they are not competing for attention.” Loving and appreciating your children for their differences doesn’t mean you love one more than other. It means you have learned to love each one of them for their own unique qualities.
Celebrate individual milestones
Noticing Unique Qualities in Your Children
No one wants to hear the words “Why can’t you be more like your sister?” Comparisons feel like judgement to a child. While it goes against our natural instinct, we must
Sarah Lyons is a mom of six children, including 2 year old triplets. She enjoys cooking with the kids, reading, and spending time outside as a family.
As parents, we all desire to be “fair” to all of our children. I noticed as my children grew I became so focused on being fair that I was missing the celebration of the individual milestones that were important and meaningful to each child. Being fair is a great goal, but part of that is appreciating each child’s differences rather than comparing them as a group. For instance, when you notice your child has achieved a new accomplishment make sure to share it with the entire family at dinner. It lets them know you pay attention to their individual accomplishments
• Treat them as individuals • Seek out what makes them unique • Recognize their strengths and struggles • Choose activities they love • Foster separate friendships • Find out their love language from the book “The Five Love Languages of Children” by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell • Listen to what they say • Give them choices • Spend one-on-one time with each child
We can work together. The Children’s Shelter’s iParent SA® is here to help. Our program is built upon the strengths and assets of each family. We offer support services such as parent skill building, child development screening, in-home support for adult and teen parents, military and veteran families, and many more. ONGOING EXHIBITS San Antonio Botanical Garden
Art in the Garden features a 10-month solo exhibit of Steel Sculptures of George Tobolowsky. Tobolowsky’s work includes 10 steel sculptures placed in the Lucile Halsell Conservatory setting. Based at the Mountain Springs Sculpture Studio in Mountain Springs, Texas, Tobolowsky creates abstract metal sculptures from found objects, pieces of bulky industrial castoffs scoured from scrap yards and fabrication plants. The metal pieces, rarely altered, are arranged into balanced compositions fit together like “pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.” Considered part assemblage and part recycling, his work follows closely the artistic influence of Louise Nevelson and James Surls. Exhibit runs through December. Admission: $10 adults (14-64); $8 students, seniors, military; $7 children age 3-13; free for children under 3 and all members. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Femke, from the Netherlands, and host sister Jade from Texas as part of the “Perceptions of Texas” student exhibition. Femke’s eyes are closed, showing that her life in the Netherlands is on hold while she spends a year in the U.S.
Institute of Texan Cultures
Perceptions of Texas is the current Student Exhibit and partners the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures with the Ayusa Global Exchange international student program allowing high schoollevel students participating in AGE to use a variety of media to express their perceptions of Texas before and during their time here. From culture shock, to favorite customs, to differences in schooling across the world, Ayusa students will share what they learned and what surprised them about Texas. To offer a counterpoint to the exchange students’ artworks, each international student is paired with a Texas student at their host high school, who will share what they learned from their Ayusa partners. Exhibit runs through May 28. Texas Missions and Churches of Roberto Cardinale presents an artist’s vision of 12 iconic Texas religious sites to explore the critical role missions and churches played in the development of the Lone Star State. Cardinale, now of Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a former president of the San Antonio Art Institute and has created more than 500 sculptures depicting churches and synagogues from around the world. The exhibit will include wooden artistic interpretations of San Antonio’s Spanish Missions, San Fernando Cathedral before and after its renovations, El Paso’s Mission Ysleta, and other sites. Texas Art of Early Days to Now: The Witte Collection has been shaped by the visionary leadership of curators such as Eleanor Onderdonk, Martha Utterback, and Cecilia Steinfeldt. Each curator helped define Texas Art for the museum, the state, and the nation. In honor of the Witte Museum’s 90th anniversary and the legacy created by Alfred Witte and the Witte Picture Fund, this exhibition explores how these remarkable women shaped the collection through strategic purchases. Learn more about the Witte Museum’s renowned Texas Art Collection as you explore works from 19th and 20th century painters, folk artists and native artists that have been purchased for the permanent collection. Together these works provide a cross-section of the Texas Art Collection and also represent the powerful choices that continue to shape the collection today. Included with general admission. Russell Hill Rogers Texas Art Gallery. Exhibit runs through May 29.
