Mother’s Day Juggling Act

Remember Mother’s Day before you were married? The day probably revolved around your own mom, stepmom or other mother figure. Then your mother-in-law came into the picture, and you had to really split your time every second Sunday in May. Once YOU became a mother you probably realized that juggling Mother’s Day visits (as well as your own “selfish” needs and wants) should be an Olympic event. While it’s true you can’t make everyone happy all of the time, I believe you CAN honor all the moms in your life — including yourself — every year. Here are some ideas:

Dilemma: So many moms, so little time.

Solution: Change it up. Who says Mother’s Day

should only be celebrated on that specific Sunday in May? I like to have my stepmom over for dinner one night during the week leading up to Mother’s 6

Day. Then maybe we take my mother-in-law out to dinner the night before. When Sunday rolls around, I have my mom over to hang out with us at our house for part of the day, and we make sure to serve her a special meal and shower her with cards and flowers.

I get the best of both worlds on Mother’s Day: being with my own mom and being with the little ones who made ME a mom.

Dilemma: A long-distance relationship with your mom or mother-in-law.

Solution: Skype! It’s free and fun — you just need an Internet connection and a camera hook-up for your computer. You could also make different plans every now and then (e.g., have an out-of-town Mother’s Day one year, then the next year stay put; or have one of the moms come for a weekend stay at your place).

Dilemma: You feel selfish and guilty for wanting it to be about you.

Solution: I believe it’s your choice as to how you want to spend your day or weekend once you become a mom yourself. You might want to get away for a Saturday spa day or sit around at a coffeehouse on Sunday leisurely reading or chatting with a friend for a few hours. Other years you might want to hang out around the house all day letting the kids pamper you.

able to make you dinner on Mother’s Day, let them take you to a restaurant. If you aren’t up for wrestling with the kids at a restaurant, consider take-out.

Don’t forget to grab something sweet that you love  is the day you on the way home, like ice cream. This get to indulge and not feel one bit guilty!

Dilemma: You’re a single mom.

Solution: If you’re parenting alone, I’m hoping

your kids will take over or that some trusted adult will assist them in making your day special. If your ex has the kids for the weekend, focus on yourself.

The “no housework” rule applies to you, too, sister … believe me, it’ll still all be there tomorrow. Do what you love to do all day long. Go for a walk, read a juicy novel, go to a movie, soak in the tub, hang out with your own mom if you like.

The Savvy Camp Parent: Pack Lightly To Maximize A Sense Of Summer Adventure

No one at your kids’ camp is hoping you will over-pack. Camp staff are busy scheduling the type of summer adventures that make lifelong memories. So resist the urge to over-pack your kids for camp. Keep your approach simple. Here are a few tips that will make your job easier and save you money and headaches.

Be A Follower.

Heed the camp packing list, even if you don’t understand every piece of advice. The staff has done this before and they know what is necessary and what is not.

If you have a question, send an email in advance. Don’t wait until the last minute to pack. Divide and conquer the list early by laying everything out where it can be checked and double-checked. Expect it to all come back home in a jumble, of course.

Think Duffel Bag. If your camp does not tell you how to pack, invest in a large, sturdy duffel bag and do not over-fill it. You want to leave a bit of room for everything to come home after camp when it’s not packed as well as you packed it. In fact, tuck a collapsible nylon bag into one of the duffel bag pockets. It’s sure to come in handy on the way home.

If your camp requires a trunk, consider a soft trunk for easier mobility.

Go With Worn.

Don’t go on a spending spree and send your child to camp with a whole new wardrobe. These clothes will likely come home stained and ripped, if they even all make it home at all. Suffice it to say, pack old clothing that won’t be missed if it does not return. Anything of irreplaceable sentimental value needs to stay home, even if it’s just an old t-shirt. Send favorites as long as they are replaceable. Have a variety of appropriate shoes. And if you buy new shoes, definitely break them in before camp.

Label Almost Everything.

Use a black laundry marker or a silver Sharpie for black items. If you shop online, you can find a white laundry market that will last a couple of years. But don’t go so far as labeling socks. Buy inexpensive socks of the same type and make sure your camper can identify them. Keep markings simple for most things by using three initials. No one wants to have the label-Nazi parent. However mark important items like boots, sneakers, and water bottles with full names. Also label luggage.

Like Lightweight Layers.

Even if it will be cool or even cold at night, resist the urge to pack a parka. Go with lightweight layers. A t-shirt, sweatshirt, and a waterproof shell is plenty warm enough for active kids. For cooler locations, fleece is lightweight and warm. Jeans may not sound fierce but will come in handy on cool nights by the fire. Don’t forget a camp chair for damp mornings and evenings outdoors. And if you are going to pack anything extra, consider socks and underwear, a second bathing suit, and a back-up water bottle. They won’t take up much room.

Expect Damp.

Sleeping bags should be easy to dry in the sun, just in case. Pack any stationary, books and papers in zip-top bags. You can separate small clothing into zip-top bags when packing. Repel Critters Naturally.

Make sure camp cabins will be animal-proof before sending candy or snacks. Beware of ants and other bugs.

When packing toiletries, invest in insect-repelling natural brands for shampoo, conditioner and soap. You can always transfer liquids into small, spill-proof containers and leave the remainder at home. Natural scents that discourage bugs include tea tree, rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint and lemongrass. Try bath products with these scents and also pack traditional insect repellent.

Ease Pressure.

I am sure you want your kids to write to you from camp, so include self-addressed postcards or stationary. Then when drop-off day arrives, squeeze those campers tight, tell them you love them, and let them off the hook to enjoy a summer camp experience of their own creation. They may not write or call or even think of you much, and that’s okay.

If they send one piece of mail, let it be enough until they return. The less they think about you and home, the better job you did packing them up for independence.

21 Activities to Keep Learning Fresh It’s summertime, and while the school doors may be closed, that doesn’t mean young children have to take a break from learning. In fact, some of that hard-earned knowledge may disappear if they do. According to the National Summer Learning Association, research shows that children experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.

How do you combat brain-drain during the summer, but still give your kids the carefree break they deserve? Try some of these fun and easy ways for the whole family to combine time off with activities that give the brain a boost.

1.

Attend your city’s summer reading program. Most summer reading programs have special activities and prizes for children and adults. Have a friendly family competition to see who can read the most minutes.

2.

Summer doesn’t have to be screen-free. There are many apps that make reading, science, social studies and math fun. Choose educational game apps that review skills your child learned during the year.

Grow a garden together. See who can grow the biggest watermelon.

Make homemade ice cream in a bag and talk about physical properties and changes. Food.com or Allrecipes.com have recipes for this sweet homemade treat.

Go on a treasure hunt by geocaching. Using a GPS, treasure seekers enter a specific set of coordinates and then attempt to find a hidden container at the location. Check out geocaching.com to find out more.

Pick a recipe and let your child apply their knowledge of measuring and fractions while you cook or bake together.

7.

Check out a book on a famous artist like Vincent van Gogh. Let your child create their own rendering of one the artist’s masterpieces and then frame it.

8.

Take a self-guided walking tour of your town and study the architecture. Look for geometric shapes or Greek or Roman influences.

Hearing Loss in Children

Technology has touched all aspects of our lives. In the field of children’s hearing loss, the impact of new developments is felt most profoundly. Prior to legislation in 1999, when a baby was born with a hearing loss, parents often did not learn of their child’s hearing loss until the baby was two or three years old. By the time the loss was identified, opportunities for some child were limited and challenging.

With the passing of the universal newborn screening legislation (1999) requiring all babies to receive hearing screenings prior to leaving the hospital, hearing loss in children is being identified much earlier.

Ideally, the child should be screened for hearing loss by the time the baby is 1 month old. When a baby is referred from the hospital, the next step is to identify that the hearing loss is present through a full hearing diagnostic screening by 3 months of age. An audiologist will perform an Auditory Brain Response test to determine the type and degree of the hearing loss and what the best course of action will be. By the time the baby is 6 months old, he or she should be enrolled in early intervention services and be fitted with the appropriate hearing technology.

If a family can accomplish 1-3-6 for their baby, hopes are the highest of succeeding in a listening and spoken language world. Early Childhood Interventionist or Auditory Verbal Therapist go through each step with families providing guidance and knowledge.

The key to helping children attain their capacity to learn to communicate through talking is early identification and appropriate early intervention. Babies who benefit from cochlear implants are able to undergo surgery as early as 12-14 months of age.

Success is facilitated when the child’s listening device is checked and mapped according to the hearing loss to guarantee the device continues to function as it should; as it is with so much of technology, constant monitoring of hearing devices is critical. It is critical for families who choose a listening and spoken language outcome to learn how to provide a language rich environment so that their child has the opportunity to develop spoken language normally.

There are some babies whose deafness is not identified through newborn hearing screening. Perhaps they were born with typical hearing yet lost their hearing over time due to a progressive condition, an illness, trauma, or reaction to certain medications. Of the deaf population, 3 percent developed hearing loss after birth.

How do you know if your baby has a hearing loss or is deaf? If your baby is not reaching milestones for developing speech and language, then ruling out a hearing loss is the first step. Babies will startle at loud noises or respond to the voice of a parent; if your child is not responding appropriately, then ask to have their hearing checked.

Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists are the professions concerned with the prevention, identification, and treatment of communication impairments.

Approximately 10 percent of children entering the first grade have moderate to severe communication impairments, including speech production, stuttering, and languagelearning difficulties. Children with speech and language impairments are 4 to 5 times more likely to experience significant reading problems.

In Our State

• Texas has the 2nd highest birth rate in the nation with 412,000 births/year • About 600 children are being diagnosed out of an estimated 1,200 children born with hearing loss • 3 out of 1,000 diagnosed at birth • 9 out of 1,000 diagnosed by age 5 due to progressive or late onset hearing loss

Texas has the largest loss to follow up in the nation. Reasons include:

• Birthing centers are reporting inaccurately • Military births are not required to report screenings • Parents are opting out of newborn hearing screening If you are concerned about your child’s hearing and you have general questions do not hesitate to call an audiologist or check with your pediatrician.

The key to a child’s hearing success is early identification and early intervention.

There’s Power In The Tongue!

Shhh! Sneak a peek at your child! Can you see their tongue? Is it hanging out in mid- air? Flopped between their teeth? Wallowing in the bottom of the mouth?

Or is it quietly working as it should, resting up against the roof of their mouth? Are their lips closed? Mouth breather? When swallowing do they grimace, stretch their neck or otherwise work to get that morsel down?

When sleeping, is their chin up and head tilted back, extending the neck, i.e. opening the airway? Do they snore? Are they refreshed in the morning or difficult to wake up? Are they tired during the day? Thumb sucker? Nail biter? Crowded teeth? Have trouble forming some words? Drool? These are very important questions for general health and the normal healthy development of your child.

All these and more are symptoms of an OMD— Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder. OMDs cause health problems and the facial development to be less than its beautiful potential. Whether the face is growing long and narrow, or the cheekbones are not developing, making the nose look big, or the chin is becoming smaller and more retracted—these are the body’s developmental response to the dysfunction.

Most of your body’s functional systems converge around your mouth and face—the orofacial complex.

Breathing, digestion, the nervous system—even the circulatory, endocrine, exocrine/integumentary, musculoskeletal and lymphatic systems come into play here. How these work together is critical for health and 24

quality of life. When they are not functioning correctly, life takes a downward turn.

Some of the consequences include:

Cavities and/or Gum Disease. A dry mouth or inability to clear food from the mouth can cause inflamed gums and infected teeth which are directly related to heart disease, diabetes and other systemic health problems.

Allergies and Asthma increase with mouth breathing. We don’t chew food with our nose and we shouldn’t breathe with our mouth except in emergencies!

Obstructive Sleep Apnea or Sleep Disorders.

Of all the problems with OMDs, this is perhaps the most dangerous. Did you know that the brain works harder while asleep than during the day? This brain work is vital for mental and physical health, occurring only in deep sleep. If you treat sleep problems with surgery without doing OM—Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (also called Orofacial Myology or Myofunctional Therapy) for your child, research shows that the child will relapse in a few years.

Digestive Problems. Digestion improves when proper chewing and swallowing is established.

The Nervous System receives surprising benefits from OM. Correct Tongue Rest Posture stimulates the Trigeminal and Vagus nerves. Stimulating the Trigeminal nerve causes the release of melatonin (sleep), serotonin (feel good) acetylcholine (brain development) and norepinephrine (too much to list!) Similarly, stimulation of the Vagus nerve is critical for correct function of the body, sleep and maintaining the balance between calm-healing (parasympathetic), and anxiety-fight or flight (sympathetic). Doctors provide electrical stimulation to these nerves to treat PTSD, ADHD, etc. The tongue is your natural stimulator.

Bed Wetting/eneuresis is more common when your child is not staying in deep sleep. Breathing and cranial nerve stimulation both play a role.

Forward Head Posture. This is now so pervasive that some think it is normal. It isn’t. “Tech Neck” crimps the airway, circulation and, most importantly, the brain stem which may cause the brain to receive erroneous readings of body chemistry. Strained muscles lead to neck, shoulder, back, knee and foot problems.

The connection between the mouth, upper airway and the rest of the body has been largely ignored in recent decades. Now, a rapidly growing group of forward-thinking healthcare professionals have realized that the body is one unit and must function and be treated as a whole. OM is uniquely qualified to address this, ideally in collaboration with dentists and physicians.

OM, having been around over 100 years, is simple in concept. Old, dysfunctional muscle memory is broken down. Muscles are toned and trained. New, functional muscle memory is established. Ideally the exercises are fun while challenging. Sometimes restricted movement such as a tongue-tie must be addressed. Parent participation is vital.

As the tendency is toward inherited problems, many find that doing the therapy with the child improves their own health!

Viva HemisFair!: Through historical photos, personal anecdotes, HemisFair memorabilia, archive film footage and more, the exhibit reveals what it took to put on the fair, and how it impacted San Antonio and the surrounding area. Exhibition runs through July 15, 2018.

Viva ITC!: The Institute of Texan Cultures began with HemisFair’68 and it continues to inspire and educate today. The exhibit details the origins of the institute, from its commissioning in 1965, to opening in 1968, re-opening as a permanent museum and educational center after HemisFair, and its continuing work serving the state of Texas.

Paint to Music: The San Antonio Symphony League will exhibit a selection of the 2018 Paint to Music contest entries at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures this spring, as a student-created exhibit. The Paint to Music Contest encourages children to explore the language of music and the role that classical music can play in enhancing creative expression through art. The exhibit includes 40 images, displayed in the institute’s student exhibits gallery. Exhibition runs through July 15, 2018 and is free with Museum admission. San Antonio Museum of Art Egyptian Animal Mummies: Science Explores an Ancient Religion in this upcoming exhibition. These reliquaries will be presented for the first time alongside the Museum’s collection of animal mummies. Recently conserved for this exhibition, the mummies include a cat, three crocodiles, two ibises, and three falcons.

The exhibition focuses on the creation of the mummies, their role in ancient Egyptian religion, and their burial. In collaboration with the San Antonio Zoo and the Radiology Department at University of Texas Health San Antonio, the mummies underwent modern scientific methods of examination including X-ray imaging and CT scanning, which made it possible to understand and analyze the contents of the mummies without unwrapping them.
