Happy 300th Anniversary 2018 marks the start of our city’s 300th Anniversary and Tricentennial Events planned throughout the year. What also comes along with a new year is resolutions. This month two freelance writers offer tips and address this subject with some interesting perspectives. First, Sarah Lyon helps parents set reasonable goals for kids when choosing which resolutions are more likely to make positive and healthy changes in their lives. Studies show that a good amount of folks abandon their resolutions within weeks of starting thses new year promises. It’s difficult to break a bad habit and replace it with a good one. Luckily, freelancer Denise Morrison Yearian has written an article on “10 Steps to Breaking a Bad Habit” that may be helpful to both parents and kids. Now that the holidays are over, it’s time for our children to get ready for school once again. I know it’s hard for a lot of us to get motivated to head back to work or school after having had time off for the winter break. If this is the case in your family, read Sarah Lyons article in our education guide on how to get rid of the “Mid-Year Elementary School Blues.” Besides not feeling up for school, your child may also not be big on books and reading either; but, it may just be that they haven’t found a book that feeds their interest yet. Freelancer Cindy Hudson may be able to help in this department so check out “Eight Nonfiction Topics to Spark a Love of Reading.” Speaking of books your child may enjoy reading... With the 50th Anniversary remembrance of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, upon us, this may be the perfect time for your child to read a book on the Civil Rights Movement to raise their awareness of our nation’s past and progress. Because this period often involved violence and terror, freelance writer Cindy Hudson recommends finding age-appropriate books that tell the story without inciting fear. She has compiled a list of books in her article “Eight Books to Raise Children’s Awareness of Civil Rights.” Whatever your own political beliefs, one can easily see by tuning into any major news channel that the struggle for rights, equality, and justices still rages on. Trying to explain it to our children is not a simple task, but the history of the civil rights movement in our country is an important lesson for all kids. And, finally, looking to the not so distant past, how about that snow day?!! Well, if this weather caught you by surprise, check out this month’s calendar which includes a planned snow day at Flyte Brooks City Base. Other events listed in the calendar include the Kerrville Renaissance Festival, Tricentennial events, Confluence Park Grand Unveiling, Monster Jam and Wild Kratts Rudy Riojas live. New Year’s Resolutions:
Help Your Kids (And Yourself) Set Reasonable Goals By Sarah Lyons A new year, a new start. Each year 62% of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions hoping to make positive and healthy changes. Statistics show that within the first two weeks 25% of those same Americans have given up on their goals and only 8% reach their ultimate goal by the end of the year. (www.statisticbrain.com) These numbers are not encouraging. How do parents help their kids set resolutions they can follow through on while also setting their own reachable and realistic goals for 2018?
Set realistic and reachable goals If 36% of people give up on their New Year’s Resolutions by February, it is likely they are not setting goals that are realistic or reachable. When setting resolutions, choose goals that make sense. Resolutions that are interesting, fun, and that you and your children are motivated to keep are more likely to end in success. If your child loves to read, set a goal of reading a certain number of books or completing a challenging but interesting book series. If weight loss is a goal, choose a fun way to reach your goal weight. If you despise running, don’t plan to shed pounds on the treadmill. Pick an activity you love and incorporate it into your exercise routine.
Set measurable and specific goals How will you know if you have reached your goals? Many people give up on their resolutions because they don’t know how to achieve them or when they have been completed. Examples of immeasurable goals include “Get healthy”, “Become more organized” or “Save money”. Be specific when setting your goals. How would you become healthier? Does that include changing your eating habits? Incorporating exercise? What type of exercise and how often? Your goals need to be both measurable and specific so that you know how to achieve them. Resolutions such as “Raise my grade in science class from a B to an A”, “Read one book a month” or “Save x amount of dollars for a family vacation” are all goals that are both specific and measurable. 6
Our Kids Magazine | January 2018
These type of goals are great because you know exactly how to reach them, when you have reached them, and when to celebrate your success.
Reward yourself
Speaking of celebrating, don’t forget to set some rewards for yourself as you are choosing your New Year’s resolutions. This will help motivate you to follow through when things get challenging. Some ideas could include - “If I lose 15 pounds, I will buy three new outfits.” or “If your child completes their reading goals, they will get to pick a special toy”. Pick a reward that is enough to motivate you or your child and work together towards your goal.
Don’t overdo it
Many people make the mistake of setting too many goals or goals that are not attainable, setting themselves up for failure. When you are creating your resolutions list all the areas that you would like to work on. Once you have a list, narrow it down to the items that are realistic, measurable, and come with a reward. Prioritize and categorize your goals. Can you consolidate any? Do you see a theme? Which goals are you most excited about? Make your list again and try to be as specific as possible in order to give yourself and your children the best chance of success. If you have several that you would like to achieve, keep your list around so that you can move onto another goal after you complete one of your resolutions. While coming up with a list of goals for the year, keep them positive. Give yourself permission to create resolutions that are fun rather than a punishment or chore. When we create resolutions that are actually accomplishable and set rewards for our completion of them, we are much more likely to be successful.

New Year, New You! By Denise Morrison Yearian
If the New Year has you itching to shape up, save a few bucks or make other changes in your life, consider these ten self-improvement tips.
1. Get fit.
To maintain motivation and momentum in your fitness routine, find an activity you enjoy and enlist support. If you like to cycle, join a gym and take a spinning class or ride a stationary bike. If you enjoy dancing, take a Zumba® class. Stay accountable by finding someone to workout with. Every few weeks reward yourself with a new exercise shirt or CD for your faithful endeavors.
2. Save money.
Write down your financial goals and post them in a visible location—on your refrigerator, bathroom mirror or with your credit cards. Next create a spending plan. Record fixed and variable expenses but make room for the unexpected. Spending less has been Melissa Sparacino’s goal. “Before I was a stay-at-home mom we ate out all the time but now I cook at home to save money,” she says. “I also analyze the credit card bill to look for needless spending and have stopped buying random things, like clothes and toys my daughter doesn’t really need.”
3. Oust and organize.
Pick one room you want to organize, determine your desired outcome and consider what you need to accomplish the task. Donate, give or toss unnecessary items. If the area is used by other family members, ask for their input on strategies to get organized, and hold them accountable for helping you maintain order. If you need assistance getting the task in motion, call a professional for a consultation then move on her recommendations.
4. Manage time.
Get a grip on time management by building cushions into your day. Set an alarm or timer to go off ten minutes before you have to leave so you can wrap up what you’re currently doing. Also create a launch pad next to the door with everything you need to take with you so you can grab it and go. And don’t schedule events back to back; one delay can have a domino effect on your day.
5. Return to school.
If you’ve considered returning to school, visit your local academic institution to find out what programs are being offered. There may be fields you haven’t thought about. You don’t have to take a full course load either; start with one or

If you want a new hairstyle, find a picture you like and consult your hairdresser. She’ll be able to determine if the style compliments the shape of your face. Also consider versatility—if you want to adapt it for different occasions. Equally important, make sure it fits your lifestyle. Think about how much time you have to invest in styling it each day and the cost of upkeep. That’s what Bethann Kelleher does. “My motto has always been, ‘New Year, new ‘do.’ First I decide if I want my hair shorter or lighter or darker. Then I try to find something that fits the bill. To get ideas, I sometimes look through hair magazines. Now that I have a daughter, I try to find styles that are quick and easy to maintain.
7. Face facts. If you want a cosmetics makeover, consult a trained professional. She can help you create a look that highlights and enhances your facial features. If you’re going to invest in one product, it should be a good foundation or base that matches your skin tone, conditions and assists with your individual skin type—dry, oily or acne prone.
8. Different strokes. To dabble in a new interest or hobby without the longterm commitment of classes, consider one-time workshops. Contact your local arts league or parks and recreation department to find out about short sessions that allow you to explore various areas of art. Be adventurous. Try something unique and fun such as decoupage, furniture painting, mosaic making or jewelry design. You may wind up with a new passion.
9. Date night. Keep the fire kindled by establishing regular date nights with your spouse. Make it a priority; mark it on the calendar and be consistent. It doesn’t have to be expensive either. Walk through the home improvement store together and gather project ideas, or send the kids to grandma’s house and have an at-home candlelight dinner and a movie.

Don’t feel guilty setting aside time for yourself. If you give and don’t replenish, you’ll eventually run dry. Carve out five or ten minutes each day to do something for yourself that you enjoy. Be structured about it until it becomes more natural. And move past the guilt. Remember, the more you give to yourself, the more you have to give to others.

10 Steps: Breaking a Bad Habit
1. Define your goal, write down exactly how you plan to achieve it and post it in a visible location. 2. Review past attempts and note what did and didn’t work. 3. Remove temptations and reminders so you can stay focused on your goal. 4. Rally support from others who want to see you succeed. Get professional support, if needed. 5. Buddy up with someone who has the same goal and hold each other accountable. Touch base at predetermined times to record progress and receive encouragement. 6. Establish sub-goals and create timelines for achieving them. Readjust your timeline, if necessary. 7. Shift your thought pattern. If you find yourself longing to return to that behavior, ask yourself, “What is causing me to feel this way?” “What alternatives do I have to replace the behavior?” 8. Replace old habits with new ones. Find a positive activity, such as exercise or meditation, to replace the bad habit and help you conquer the urge to give in. 9. Celebrate progress and mini goals that have been achieved. Reward yourself with something doesn’t involve returning to the habit you are trying to break. 10. If you experience a setback, don’t give up. Forgive yourself and keep working toward your goal.

Eight Books to Raise Children’s Awareness of Civil Rights by Cindy Hudson
It is important for children to learn about the struggle for civil rights and racial equality in the U.S. during the 1950s and 60s. But milestones in The Civil Rights Movement often involved violence, so you’ll want to find age-appropriate books that tell the story. The best titles will also help with sparking your child’s interest in learning more. Here’s a list of eight titles in two age groups that shed light on important people and issues from the movement. Pick them up for read-aloud time or to recommend to independent readers.
Ages 5 to 8
We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song by Debbie Levy This book tells how a song with origins in slavery captured the yearning for freedom from oppression, and how it came to be associated with racial justice not just in the U.S., 10

but also all around the world. The back of the book features a timeline of key events in the song’s evolution. Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by Doreen Rappaport Using excerpts of words from Dr. King’s speeches, Rappaport paints a portrait of a little boy who was taught that he was “as good as anyone,” and who grew up to inspire a movement towards racial equality. A timeline at the back lists important dates in his life. The Youngest Marcher: The Story of Audrey Faye Hendricks, A Young Civil Rights Activist by Cynthia Levinson Hendricks was only nine in 1963, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called on children to march against unjust FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
laws. She was the youngest person to be arrested during the protest, and she spent a week in jail. Hendricks’ story can inspire children to believe that their actions can make a difference. When Thunder Comes: Poems for Civil Rights Leaders by J. Patrick Lewis This book of poems highlights 17 people from around the world who sought to break race, class and sexual equality barriers. Included are well-known figures, such as Mohandas Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, and lesser-known activists like Dennis James Banks, who cofounded the American Indian Movement. Biographies in the back add details to the lives of featured leaders.

Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges Ruby Bridges was the first black student to enroll at an all-white public school in New Orleans. Many people know her story from the picture book and television movie depicting it. Here, Ruby tells what happened from her own six-year-old perspective. Photographs and sidebars shed light on the wider story of what happened around her. Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson This memoir in free verse recounts Woodson’s childhood in the Deep South as well as Brooklyn, New York. Her words offer a glimpse into The Civil Rights Movement and the way prejudices lingered even after Jim Crow laws went away. Woodson gains the courage to find her own voice after seeing other Black women fight for change. Things Too Huge To Fix By Saying Sorry by Susan Vaught A biracial girl in Oxford, Mississippi, uncovers the segregated history of the town she lives in, seeing vast differences between the past and present. She also solves a mystery about her grandmother and the riots that occurred when the first black student enrolled at Ole Miss. Loving vs. Virginia by Patricia Hruby Powell This documentary novel tells the story of Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving, who were forbidden to marry across racial lines or live as a married couple in Virginia during the 1950s. They sued the state and ultimately won when their case went to the U.S. Supreme Court. Historical documents and quotes from officials underscore the larger struggle for civil rights taking place at the time. Mid Year Elementary School Blues How to Keep Kids Motivated the Entire School Year
By Sarah Lyons
Packing lunches, doing nightly homework, studying for spelling tests, and scrambling about during the morning rush; the thrill of a new school year has worn off and kids start to drag their feet a little more on school mornings as they return for the start of the second semester. How do you keep kids motivated to finish out the last months of the school year strong?
excitement about school is their parents’ interest. When your child returns home from school ask him about his day, his friends, and the highs and lows of the day. Listen attentively and ask questions. When it is homework time, be available to help and answer questions. When parents are excited and interested in the goings on at school, kids will be too.
Set goals
Kids who are involved in school activities tend to be more excited about school. Encourage your child to join clubs and after school activities where they will be around school friends. Parents can also get involved at the school to break up the mid-year blues. When kids see their parents working at the school, it shows them that you value their time there. Check with your school to see what volunteer opportunities are available.
It’s important to let your child know you have high expectations for them throughout the year, not just first semester. Work with your child to set goals for success and reward them for meeting their goals. Some kids may need an academic goal, while others need goals such as no tardies for the quarter or turning all assignments in on time. Communicate with your child’s teacher to come up with some beneficial goals for your child. Rewards could include a special outing as a family, going out for ice cream, picking out a special toy, or extra screen time.
Stay positive
As parents who are tired of packing lunches and reminding children to put their shoes on for the fifth time in one morning, it can be hard to stay positive. However, a positive attitude can go a long way for both parents and kids. Focus on the excitement of learning, seeing friends, and upcoming events to encourage your child that school is still as fun as it was back in August. Your positive attitude will become contagious and your child will start to get excited about school again too.

Get involved
Continue healthy habits Encourage your child to get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and focus on good study habits. An after school routine to complete homework and chores will help your child fall back into the school schedule after winter break. Set aside time for free time as well. Host a play date, have a movie night, go to the park if weather allows, and schedule time for fun and relaxation so kids don’t get too bored with their routine. If the mid-year blues are still getting to your child, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to discuss a plan to get your child back on track. Soon enough the days will begin to get longer, the temperatures warmer, and school will be out for summer once again. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

EDUCATION GUIDE
Eight Nonfiction Topics to Spark a Love of Reading By Cindy Hudson
My oldest daughter loved books, and every day we snuggled on the couch or in her room at bedtime to read about imaginary characters in fictional worlds. When my youngest daughter came along, I expected her to be like her sister. But she was more active, often losing interest in a story after a few minutes. I worried she’d never become an avid reader and would struggle in school. Then one day she came home from kindergarten with a fact-based book about cheetahs she had checked out of the school library. “Can you read to me?” she asked, settling onto the couch. That’s how I discovered what reading experts have long known: when you feed a child’s interest, she’s more likely to want to read, and nonfiction can provide the spark that prompts her to turn page after page. If you feel nonfiction may entice your child to pick up a book, consider these eight categories that may excite him. For each category, I’ve listed great series or stand-alone books that work well for parents to read to younger children or for older kids to read on their own. Hint for finding titles: Because many books have similar titles, when searching at your library or bookseller for the series highlighted below, look for the author name if one is listed.
True Adventure
True adventure books tell stories about real people from the past and present who face danger and escape. Some combine fact with fiction to personalize historical events. Series: Mystery and Mayhem by Judy Dodge Cummings, Totally True Adventures by various authors, I Survived: True Stories by Lauren Tarshis, Lost by Tod Olson, Survivor Diaries by Terry Lynn Johnson
Memoir and Diary
Kids often want to know what life was like for children during important times in history. Memoirs and diaries give a personal perspective. Series: The Royal Diaries (fact-based fiction) by Kathryn Lasky and other authors Stand-alone titles: Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges, Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl, Marshfield Dreams: When I Was a Kid by Ralph Fletcher, Real Friends by Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham, Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution by Ji-li Jiang, Zlata’s Diary by Zlata Filipovic
Animals and Nature
Feed your children’s interest in the flora and fauna of the world around them with books you can take on hikes and other outings. Series: Let’s Explore... by Lonely Planet, Take Along Guides by Mel Boring, a wide variety of titles by National Geographic Kids, Animal Bites by Animal Planet, Kids FAQs by Marty Crisp and other authors
Facts and Puzzles
Books compiling outlandish facts, encyclopedias and brainteasers can satisfy curious minds of any age.
Series: Magic Tree House Fact Tracker by Mary Pope Osborne (companions to Magic Tree House fictional titles), Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Guinness World Records year books, Mad Libs Jr. by Roger Price, Woo! Jr. Biography Kids Activities Books Information about the lives of famous people from the past Stand-alone titles: Pranklopedia and Frightlopedia by Julia plus well-known figures from today gives insight on historical Winterbottom and current events. Series: Who Was/Who Is...? by various authors, Kid Legends by David Stabler and Doogie Horner, Rebel in a Dress by Sylvia Branzei and Melissa Sweet, Lives of... by Kathleen Krull and Kathryn Hewitt Stand-alone title: In Disguise! Undercover With Real Women Spies by Ryan Ann Hunter and Jeanette Little 14
