Rising star in transport modelling wins award be controlled by a roundabout, but engineers want to see what would happen if we signalise this intersection instead,” she says. “A transport model can help predict the impact of the signalised intersection on traffic delays, travel time and so on before the intersection is even built.” Neha qualified as a mechatronics engineer but soon gravitated towards transport-related projects. She began with work experience in the field of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and transport modelling, working with traffic sensors and developing algorithms to use the data from these sensors to update traffic control in an intelligent and dynamic way. She is a committee member of the NZ Modelling User Group (NZMUGS) and a Graduate member of Engineering New Zealand (ENZ). NZMUGS is a sub-group of ENZ’s Transportation Group and she’s often found at ENZ, ACENZ, or Infrastructure NZ events. “I find transport engineering quite fascinating and after working in the industry for just over five years, I can confidently say it’s an area I’m passionate about,” she declares.
Neha Sharma moved to Wellington four years ago as part of the team to build, calibrate and validate a transport modelling system for the $6.4 billion “Let’s Get Wellington Moving” initiative. Once completed, it will help guide the future of transport across the entire Wellington region. Her work on this project was developed while she was working at Jacobs Ltd, and she is now an Intermediate Transport Engineer with Wellington City Council.
Giving back One of NAWIC’s/BCITO’s obligations when selecting award winners is to evaluate how individuals give back to their communities. In Neha’s case, she is one of ENZ’s “Wonder Project Ambassadors” for schools. This project is designed to get young kiwis excited about STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and maths. Neha works with Koraunui School in Stokes Valley, Wellington where she recently spent approx. three months with Year 5 students building rockets.
Neha’s efforts won the “Rising Star – Office” award at the recent National Association of Women in Construction’s (NAWIC’s) Excellence Awards, held in partnership with BCITO. “A transport model is a mathematical model of real world transport networks and traffic behaviour,” Neha explains. “It contains information such as the number of vehicles expected to travel from one point to another, what routes are being used to get there, what transport modes people are choosing, and so forth.”
“ I find transport engineering quite fascinating and after working in the industry for just over five years, I can confidently say it’s an area I’m passionate about,” she declares.
Transport models are employed for everything from regional land use, infrastructure planning, for forecasting transport demand, to evaluating the impact of new infrastructure. On a macro scale, modelling can indicate the likely relationship between traffic density, flow and speed across a whole region. “On a micro scale, let’s say we have an intersection that could 6

Neha was thrilled with the positive responses she received for her work there. “During the programme, one of the girls thanked me for making her believe she can do anything in life. That was one of the most special moments of the whole project for me.” Neha also helps in the Innovative Young Minds (IYM) project in Wellington, a Royal Society initiative that encourages young women to consider careers in science and technology. It’s a week-long intensive programme hosted during school holidays, where students travel to a variety of businesses, research institutes and tertiary education providers in the Wellington region. Neha arranges for students to visit her workplace and also talks to them at the IYM centre about careers in engineering and construction. This has included mentioning subjects such as the “unconscious” bias that can be faced in the field of engineering and construction, and options to tackle such situations.

SURFS UP
BIG WAVE LEGEND
Ross Clarke-Jones is one of the ultimate survivors of one of the world’s most dangerous sports and will be competing in the Nazare Tow Surf Challenge in Portugal. This event takes place on the awe-inspiring ‘Big Mama” wave peak – considered to be one of the most dangerous on the planet – that breaks closest to the iconic red lighthouse at Praia do Norte on the rugged Portuguese coastline. A regular at Nazare, Clarke-Jones said, “It doesn’t matter how well you know a location or the surf, you can never be complacent. That’s what’s so awesome, but also dangerous, about the ocean.” “No two waves are ever the same, and when you’re talking about 80-130ft waves like those in Nazare, you can’t ever afford to drop your guard. I learnt that the hard way last year when I wiped out and had to hop my way back up the cliff face to safety after being smashed on the rocks below. I’ll be the first to admit that that day I was complacent, and I very nearly paid the ultimate price. It taught me a big lesson,” he added. Tradie NZ caught up with Aussie’s Big Wave royalty - Ross Clarke-Jones on his favourite surf spots in NZ and his surfing etiquettes!
ROSS CLARKE-JONES’ FAVOURITE SURF SPOTS IN NZ 1. PAPATOWAI: I have surfed it with Tony Ray and Doug Young, both times have been wild and woolly and very exciting. The big sucking ledge into a long wall and it’s great for tow surfing. 2. RAGLAN: Raglan has a long left-hand point break and is great fun to surf 3. DUNEDIN: Beach breaks are very constant, good quality smaller waves, probably the coldest water I’ve ever been in – bring the rubber 4. PIHA: Was a spectacular padding out through the cave, don’t let this beauty fool you, the rips are horrendous so be careful if you do decide to surf here. It’s one for someone with experience in the water. When you’re surfing in NZ, the water is often cold – so a 5mm hooded steamer (wetsuit), gloves and booties are something I always pack. I would also suggest one weighed tow board and one light tow board (especially if you’re going somewhere like Papatowai for tow surfing), then a screw driver, drill and sandpaper as well as a 10 foot long board.
Surfing Etiquette - Never drop in, never paddle on the inside of a locals and finally always be respectful of any surfer, doesn’t matter what their skill level is!

FISHING
THE
KINGY
Kingfish: (Seriola lalandi lalandi) are New Zealand’s most accessible gamefish, offering size, power and guile to challenge Kiwi anglers fishing from the shore and from boats.
New Zealand fishing guru Bill Hohepa has been catching fish for decades. In this issue of Tradie NZ Bill gives us tips and tricks and even a recipe for kingfish or here in NZ affectionately known as ‘the kingy’. Over the coming summer holiday season, many people will be out at their favourite fishing spots and will try and catch a kingfish. Many people have never caught a kingfish throughout their fishing careers to date. Kingfish are reasonably smart but once you figure them out, they’re easy to catchy really. They usually swim in large schools, around structure and all are usually around the same size. So, the best place to be looking for them is around structure, places like buoys, marker beacons, light houses, underwater reefs that come close to the surface…or not. Bird work-ups are always a great place to pick up a kingy using either a soft bait, a jig or a popper. So, let’s start by examining these fishing lures: 1. Soft Baits: Soft baits were all the rage a few years ago, and they are still very effective for just about anything that swims. They come in two parts. The weighted hook, and the soft bait itself. Depending on the depth, depends on their weight you would use to get your soft bait down to the kingies. A 6oz is for depths to around 33 meters, a small weight of half an ounce would be for depths to 20 meters. They are designed to be bounced across the bottom. In the case of kingfish though, the fact that they’re descending reasonably quickly is what will attract a kingfish to it. The other part is the soft bait itself, and the popular colours are red and green, and the longer the tail the better. 2. The jig: Long metal jigs are the go for a good kingfish meal. The ‘rainbow’ reflective colours have the best chance. Locate an underwater reef, or better still a bird workup and drop your jig down heavy end first. Most of the modern jigs have the hook attached at the top. What works with the old kings, is the speed of the drop. The jig will flash past them heading down, and they’re off after it, catch it and bang you’re on…simple as that really. The
weight again depends on the depth you’re fishing in. grams per feet is the usual rule of thumb formula. 3. The popper: A pooper is a floating lure that you cast and retrieve. These are best used around the buoys, and other surface structure. Cast past the buoy and retrieve the popper as quickly as possible being ready to strike as it passes the body or whatever. They’ll be a flash and a splash as the kings comes out of it’s hiding place and attacked the popper… great fun! Using live baitfish is another way to catch a kingy. Part of you tackle to take with you should be a string of subiki baitfish lures. Burley up a bit around the boat, and use your subikis on a light rod to catch your baitfish, yellowtail mackerel, sprats and the like. The rig I like to use is a simple dropper rig. A heavy 2 metre 80lb plus trace with a dropper loop tied into it about half way along. Tie in an 8 to 10/0 hook. Add a heavy 16oz tear drop sinker to the end. Hook up your livie through the tail end and slip the rig over the side. Once you hit the bottom, wind your line up about 2 meters and lock in there in a rod holder.Your livie will attract all sorts of fish including your kingfish. Keep an eye on the rod tip…once it starts to ‘vibrate’ something is lining your baitfish up, so be ready. The side product of thirds rig is a John Dory, and they’re very nice to eat. So there you go, enjoy your summer fishing season, and good luck catching that kingfish,
Regards Bill.

SAFETY
LOOKING AFTER YOUR BEST MATE h you during the Its great being on site; having your best mate wit d enjoying the outdoors. day, keeping each other company an But there are a few things that you probably need to be mindful of when you have your dog onsite. Many construction companies have banned dogs for Health & Safety reasons. According to reports from ACC the cost of dog bites in the Construction Industry has increased by over 125% in the past 5 years. So what does this mean for you and your best mate? Many people assume that because your dog is used to being on site that they are going to be happy to interact with others. This is not always true. Depending on what is happening around them it can change your usually happy go lucky mate into a nervous or frightened dog. This can make them react in a different manner. It could be as simple as another dog on site; someone carrying an item the dog is not familiar with, a loud noise or a strange vehicle. Potentially they could bite or become aggressive. So what is the best way to keep them safe and what are the consequences if they do bite someone? As the owner of the dog you are responsible for its actions and you have to ensure that it does not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons. Should that occur you could be in breach of the Health & Safety at Work Act. If a bite happens it could be referred to Animal Control; and you may have a civil case lodged against you. If you are the PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) you can be held personally liable and the fines can be up to $600,000. (Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 – Section 47 Offence of reckless conduct in respect of duty, Subpart 4)

We would recommend that you ask everyone to stay away from your dog and vehicle. This may sound excessive but if your dog does bite someone then you risk having to have your dog euthanized. One of the best ways to keep you mate safe is to recognise what it is saying to you. Dogs are fantastic at reading our body language but we are not so good at reading there’s. TO START. LETS DISPEL A COUPLE OF MYTHS. • A wagging tail does not always mean that a dog is happy – a wagging tail shows that a dog is interacting with something. We have videos of aggressive dogs wagging their tails. • Rolling on to their back does not always mean that they want their tummy tickled - depending on what the rest of the dogs body language is doing this can be their way of saying ‘I am not a threat please don’t hurt me’ Learning what you dog is telling you will not only increase the bond between you and your dog but can also allow you to keep your dog safe and happy. SO WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU GO ON SITE AND THERE IS A DOG? As a Tradie it is your job to enter properties where a dog may be present and not just on another worker’s Ute but it could part of the family where you are working. As we discussed earlier – • Do Not assume that the dog is friendly or comfortable being around strangers. • Do Not approach the dog or the vehicle it may be on or in
Now in Digital https://tradie.partica.online/
SAFETY • Watch the dog’s behaviour; is it showing signs of stress, frightened, uncomfortable (potentially suffering from hyperthermia) or is it relaxed and friendly.
KEEP THEM HAPPY, HEALTHY AND HYDRATED
• Do Not always believe the owner if they say the dog is fine. We hear of many dog bites where the owner has said the dog is friendly just before or just after it has bitten someone.
TIPS TO AVOID HYPERTHERMIA (HEAT STROKE) If you mate is on the back of the vehicle make sure that they have the following –
Being able to have your best mate come to work with you is great and can make your day so much better.
1. A blanket or something soft to lie on – the bed of the truck can get really hot so make sure that what they are lying on is a pale colour
If you would like any further information on how to learn more about your dog or you are looking to protect your workers from dog incidents when they are onsite get in touch with The Dog Safe Workplace.
2. Shade – make sure they have shade. If they are in a kennel is there adequate airflow. Rig up a shade cloth or park under a tree. 3. Water – check that they have water regularly and that it is cool and fresh. Put yourself in their position; would you be comfortable sitting on the back of your vehicle? If not make some changes. Dogs sweat through their paws so panting is a very ineffective way of cooling their bodies down. SIGNS OF HYPERTHERMIA; • Restlessness • Excessive panting • Glazed eyes • Excessive salivation • Vomiting • Bloody diarrhoea • Uncoordinated behaviour • Weakness/collapse/unconsciousness • Seizures HOW TO TREAT • Move to a cool shaded area • Wet the animal with cool water – do not use ice • Fan the animal vigorously • If the animal is conscious allow it to drink some cool water and get it to your nearest vet

SAFETY
DON'T LET THE SUN GET YOU DOWN
There are a few things that can lay a tradie low over summer.
“ KIWIS NEED TO KNOW THAT EXPOSURE TO OUR HARSH UV RAYS CAN LEAD TO MELANOMA OR OTHER SKIN CANCERS.” “We started putting that down to fatigue linked to food and water intake.” As a result Scafit supplies plenty of water, and it also provides all-day breakfast with quality cereals and toast to look after the team’s nutrition. “If the guys aren’t eating properly, they’re certainly not thinking properly,” Dave says. The biggest threat, apart from things that may lurk in a bottle, is the big orange thing that floats in the sky. When the heat is pumped up, the body must fight to cool down. If not enough water goes back in, this can lead to fatigue with a loss of focus. The short-term risk might be someone doing the Dance of the Blackened Fingernail as mistakes creep the hammering isn’t as accurate as it was in the morning. Dave Crowley, from Palmerston North’s Scafit scaffolding company, says dehydration takes the edge off people and he’s seen it with his team.
“COME THE AFTERNOON, BECAUSE WE’VE GOT A REALLY PHYSICAL JOB, DEHYDRATION IS A REAL PROBLEM.” “We couldn’t really prove it but we had a feeling that some of our minor accidents were happening in the afternoons and particularly later in the day because of it. 16

They even put up pee charts in the toilets so guys can compare what’s coming out with what is the optimum colour. Too dark, they need to drink more water. If it’s turned purple, well, hopefully they’ve just had too much beetroot on their hamburgers. Knowing the dangers signs of too much sun and heat are vital says the Health and Safety Lead for Site Safe, Jeff Strampel. If heat stress or exhaustion is not dealt with quickly, it can progress to heat stroke, which can be life-threatening. But even everyday fatigue just makes things harder all round. “It can be tempting to take on too much work, especially if you’ve been waiting for good weather to get started on a job. “Just remember to take a step back and think about the task before you get stuck in,” he says. “Smart planning makes the job safer.”

SAFETY Be careful when doing these types of work, which make you more likely to suffer heat exhaustion: • • • • • •
TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE
Working in the direct sun Working near heat-producing processes Working in confined spaces Doing underfloor, ceiling or roof work In cabs of mobile plant Closed areas with limited airflow
•
Make sure you know the danger signs to look out for when working in the heat. Often it is things you notice in other people as we can be useless as spotting the danger signs in ourselves. Symptoms of over-heating include: • Clammy or sweaty skin • Feeling weak or dizzy • Dark-coloured urine • Pounding or rapid pulse • Loss of balance • Headaches • Muscle cramps • Mood changes or confusion
• BE THE MAN/WOMAN WITH THE PLAN: if you have several jobs to do outside, think about where the sun is and which jobs you might be able to do first to avoid being in full sun for too long. • TAKE A BREAK: if possible, consider taking a break and heading inside during the hottest part of the day. Have regular breaks and consider extra breaks if the work is demanding. Monitor and place limits around overtime and avoid incentives to work too many hours. If you need to work longer hours, consider staggered start and finish times, and longer breaks and periods off work. Try to set realistic deadlines and timeframes for jobs.
“Unfortunately, New Zealand has one of the highest melanoma rates in the world,” Jeff says. For more free health and safety information, check out Site Safe’s website: www.sitesafe.org.nz

Getting started Think about what training would benefit both you and your employer or perhaps get credits for skills and knowledge you already have. Or maybe you prefer to train for a new career which you can still do while working in a different field.
Train to progress in your existing career If you want to progress in your existing career, ask your employer if you can talk to them about your future. Ask them what strengths they think you have, where you could improve, and what career paths you could take.
Train to change career If you want to change career, you can use our interactive tools and information to get career ideas. Once you’ve worked out what you want to do, find out the entry requirements for the job you want. If you need a new qualification, find out if distance education is available, as you may be able to continue working while you study .A micro-credential (where you do a short course to learn a specialised skill in demand) may also be a good option. It’s also useful to talk to employers you want to work for and ask what qualifications and experience they prefer. What ever your decision there are numerous training providers throughout New Zealand. BUILDING A FUTURE WITH PRIDE, AMBITION AND HARD WORK Tu Taute is a Leading Hand/Junior Foreman at McKee Fehl, a Wellington based construction company specialising in industrial and commercial redevelopments. WelTec’s job broker helped him secure an apprenticeship with McKee Fehl which lead to full-time employment. For Tu, the role of Junior Foreman is a juggling act where he’s got to keep an eye on everything at the same time. “I need to know what the subcontractors are doing - if they’re on task and if they’re on time, as well as making sure my own team are doing what they’re supposed to be doing.” His role is all about staying ahead of all of McKee Fehl workers on a given project, so it can move forward swiftly and successfully. While working full-time for one of Wellington’s best known construction companies keeps Tu busy, he’s taken it upon himself to continue his study at WelTec. “I’m taking a construction management course where I go in every Tuesday night after work. I’ve got another year left to finish that off.” Working in the industry is all about building a better future for himself, his family, and his people. His main inspiration for wanting more is his mother. She didn’t even know how to speak English, yet she was able to get a degree in Maori and Storytelling. “Just seeing her push herself and succeed made me realise I’ve got no excuse why I can’t achieve the things I want in life.” When Tu first started his apprenticeship, he was the new kid on the block, straight out of WelTec, but being green didn’t hold him back in any way. He believes that he was lucky enough to get his apprenticeship with them, but luck had nothing to do with it. Tu’s advantage was that he was willing to learn. People within McKee Fehl took notice of his effort and ambition, and they helped him by putting him with a carpenter the whole time so he was able to shadow him and absorb expertise and knowledge. It wasn’t only McKee Fehl who helped Tu grow. “WelTec helped me out a lot, in fact, they were key in helping me get an apprenticeship in the first place. They understood which students were really keen to get started in the industry and they placed us with a job broker who helped many of us get apprenticeships. I wouldn’t even be at McKee Fehl if that broker hadn’t gotten me this job.” In addition to helping him find the ideal placement, Tu’s broker also gave him good advice that he remembers to this day. “First he asked me to think about what I wanted from this career. Then he told me that there
was nothing really stopping me, and that if I wanted to achieve more, I could.” Tu went on to finish his carpentry qualification while staying on with McKee Fehl. They ended up giving him more responsibility, more training on how to be a leading hand, and now they’re training him up for the next step on his journey. Tu has some advice of his own for people, particularly Maori, who want to enter the construction industry: “You can achieve if you want to.You have the power to change your life. You don’t have to stay in the same bubble, doing a job that doesn’t thrill or push you. Take pride in your work, no matter how daunting it feels to start something new.” Tu wants people to know that there are a lot of good people within the industry who want to help them succeed. Tu will be one of them. In a few years, he’ll no doubt be a Foreman, site manager, or a business owner, most likely working with different iwis, helping them create buildings that are up to spec and respecting the culture he’s so proud of. Then it will be his turn to give WelTec apprentices and graduates the opportunity to get started in an exciting and fulfilling industry.

Sports stars future proof their careers Professional sports players often wonder where to leap after their first careers – and the building and construction industry is helping them jump into life after sports. The Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) now offers training opportunities for professional sports players alongside their sporting careers. It gives sportspeople in New Zealand flexibility, a head start and a taste of building work before they finish sports and move into fulltime trades roles. It also helps fill the skills shortage faced by the building and construction industry. It's not uncommon for professional sports players to go from sports to the trades, with 29% of retired rugby players having a trade qualification – including former All Blacks Chris Jack, Richard Kahui and Luke Romano who are all qualified builders.
Sam Smith
“Our Enterprise Package supports professional players who are committed to their sport fulltime at this stage in their life. Although rugby has been our focus this year, we are working with more sports organisations to make the Enterprise Package available to a whole raft of sports,” says BCITO Chief Executive Warwick Quinn. BCITO’s roll for the Enterprise Packages currently includes three New Zealand All Black Sevens players, nine Warriors and 13 Super Rugby players. The response to BCITO’s latest initiative has been positive among potential apprentices, and their supporting associations.
BCITO allows flexibility to all sports players playing professionally at national, provincial and club levels.
“We are getting feedback from coaches that players in an apprenticeship programme are performing better on the field – more rounded, more grounded,” says Quinn.
Since January 2019, BCITO has expanded its offering for professional sportspeople with a new Enterprise Package. This programme offers rugby and league players at a national level the chance to work their way through building theory and undertake the practical components later or when they can. The player is supported and assessed by a BCITO training advisor, and they learn useful tools for their apprenticeship.
Research undertaken by the New Zealand Rugby Players Association shows that rugby players who studied and/or undertook work experience during their career had a smoother retirement from sports, with 88% saying that having an education or trade is important and 42% saying qualifications helped them gain employment on retirement.
“What the Enterprise Package gives these professional sportspeople is flexibility. Players can dedicate themselves to sport in the season and pick up their apprenticeship in the other months. They don’t have to choose one or the other, and they have the trades waiting for them once they are ready to retire from playing professionally,” says BCITO Chief Executive Warwick Quinn. “The construction trades offer great career options for sportspeople. Building is relatively hands-on work, like sports. You can learn on the job rather than in a classroom, and you get paid while you are training, so transitioning from a sporting career to an apprenticeship reduces the financial impact. “The level of support we provide our apprentices is similar to the level of support they receive on the field. Training advisors check in with apprentices frequently to make sure they are on track with their apprenticeship and managing to balance their sporting commitments and training.
Sam Smith is an excellent example of someone benefiting from BCITO’s apprenticeship offering. Currently trialling for the Under 20 All Blacks team, the rugby player is also two years into his carpentry apprenticeship. “ I know I won’t be playing rugby forever, and I don’t want to finish playing professionally or suffer a career ending injury and be at a loose end. I enjoy being on the tools and learning skills that will be useful for the future. “My coaches at the Wellington Academy are really supportive of my apprenticeship and encourage us to study or have a job that fits in around training.” BCITO now has a project team dedicated to sports liaison to help grow these initiatives across New Zealand and with overseas players.
“The industry needs thousands more apprentices coming through the pipeline to meet demand. We must look further than the usual pool of potential apprentices. Opening the doors for sports players was an obvious solution to helping us achieve this,” says Quinn.

From Super Yachts to Scott Base “It’s always been important to me to be involved in something worthwhile. Included in that is the adventure aspect of Antarctica.” Engineer Keith Jacob’s interest in working in Antarctica began in the late 90s, he got as far as South Georgia ten years ago and is now at Scott Base as the water engineer for this season.
Day to day role in Antarctica Keith is responsible for maintaining the water production and waste water treatment systems at Scott Base. “As well as the checklists and steps you have to tick off every day, there’s a lot of situational awareness and helping out the rest of the team. It’s all about keeping in mind everyone’s department, not just your own”. “The role is really varied, from pumps and the nuts and bolts of things to computer equipment, helping out scientists and the chefs – it’s all sorts really,” he says.
Background
years, he’s held a variety of roles including fisheries observer for the Ministry of Primary Industries, ship-based maritime engineering and deck work and science support on vessels. “I originally held the impression that it was going to be really hard to get a job with Antarctica New Zealand. I guess I thought with my background in super yachts, people might not take my application seriously. But being self-contained on a ship isn’t much different to being self-contained on base” he says.
Coolest job in the world? Remote locations and adventure have always interested Keith. “I’ve travelled a lot around the world, I’ve been to the Arctic and Sub Antarctic Islands and places off the beaten track. I like those sorts of places, and I think the science work we support down here is really important.
And the people are pretty cool too! “It’s the whole living and working environment too - the other Scott Base staff and the scientists, everyone who works here is so motivated and really wants to be here,” he says. Could you be Antarctica New Zealand’s next water engineer? Visit www.antarcticanz.govt.nz for further information.
Keith’s career began as a trade apprentice after finishing high school, he then spent 20 years on super yachts. In more recent

Our linesman Luke “Working in Antarctica, you make friends with people you’ll keep in touch with for the rest of your life” “We deal with pretty much anything electrical that is connected, even down to setting up generators and camps for scientists – those are pretty exciting days when you head out to field camps,” he says.
Background With a background in industrial electrical work, Luke has fitted into the role easily, picking up new skills along the way. “I spent the better part of ten years working for The Laminex Group, which is a subset of Fletcher Construction.
Winter electrician Luke Keehan began working in Antarctica last summer for a change of pace. He enjoyed it so much, he’s back again, but this time for a whole year. Luke is one of 12 Antarctica New Zealand staff members who will be ‘wintering over’ at Scott Base this year. That means he’ll stay on the ice for 13 months and get to experience the many faces of Antarctica’s seasons.
Day to day role From general maintenance, to fault finding, power generation to heating systems and wind turbines, the electrician’s role is to keep the lights on and the base ticking.
“There’s also a decent amount of turbine work which I hadn’t done before, but I had training and picked it up quite easily on the job,” he says
Coolest job in the world? Luke describes Scott Base like a family. “It’s a very close-knit community down here, the experience of the environment and the family aspect of Scott Base is pretty special.” And there’s never a shortage of Antarctic adventures to be had. “We’re pretty lucky down here being able to get out, I’ve spent the last two weekends out helping scientists in the field. You can fill up your time with as much as you want – there’s a lot to do,” he says.

Adelaide to Antarctica A combination of trade experience along with a passion for wildlife and adventure has brought Joey Blatch on the trip of a lifetime to Scott Base, Antarctica. Recruited as the winter carpenter for the 2019/20 season, Joey has the role of Mr Fix-it for everyone who lives and works at New Zealand’s only research station on ice.
Day to day role Joey’s day is a mixture of proactive and reactive work. From testing and checking equipment to maintenance and lastminute build requests, his day is full of variety and new challenges.
Coolest job in the world?
“A unique part of working in Antarctica is the limited availability of supplies. There is no local hardware store, so you can only work with what you have on hand which is always an interesting challenge. I’ve learnt a lot on the job too, checking fire extinguishers and refilling Breathing Apparatus cylinders are all new skills to add to my tool belt”
“If you stay still, the penguins come up to you and have a nosey around. It’s one of the best moments I’ve had here so far”
Background After gaining his apprenticeship in Australia, Joey moved to New Zealand to support the Christchurch rebuild. Between 2015-2019, he helped build and maintain lodges on the Milford and Routeburn tracks. This gave him a sound understanding on what it’s like to work in remote locations. Joey also volunteered as a firefighter in Arrowtown, which supplemented his learning when it came to maintaining fire equipment and being part of the fire crew at Scott Base.
Absolutely! One of the Carpenters jobs is to open and close various huts in the Ross Sea Region. It was on one of these work visits where Joey met, for the first time, an Emperor penguin.
Joey has also enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about Antarctica’s history and conservation work on the ice. “I recently supported the Antarctic Heritage Trust (AHT) with maintenance work at Shackleton’s Hut, Cape Royds. I enjoyed learning about the Antarctic heroic era and it made the maintenance work that much more special” While the summer season finishes in February 2020, Joey will complete a winter in Antarctica, hanging up the tools in October 2020. Could this be you next season? Visit www.antarcticanz.govt/jobs for more information.

make the best classrooms 25,000 businesses across New Zealand currently help 137,000 apprentices and trainees earn industry qualifications through their workplaces. The government is planning big changes to the vocational training system over the next few years, but the message for 2020 is “business as usual”. Keep signing up apprentices, and keep on training. We’ve got huge skill shortages across all our major industries, so we need a whole lot more qualified tradespeople. The best time to start training a new apprentice is yesterday. The second best time is today. Gaining qualifications on the job means people are getting the right skills for today’s industries in real situations. For young people, vocational training is a rewarding choice. Avoiding student debt and earning while learning gives our kids a significant financial head start. Recent BERL research found that because apprentices earn significantly more in the early stages of their careers, they have a better financial position than holders of bachelor degrees until just before they are ready to retire. Earnings research by Scarlatti showed that by the age of 28, apprentices have earned on average $165,000 more than university graduates.
All these findings back our view that young people need more encouragement from home and school to consider earn and learn career options in skilled trades and services. So if you are an employer who runs apprentices – thank you for doing your part for the future of your industry and the workforce. Focus on a new career in the trades sector In 2020, the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) will be offering the Bachelor of Construction with specialisations in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management and Project Management, and the Bachelor of Architectural Technology. Both degrees will be supported by graduate diploma qualifications and will provide prospective students already working within the industry or those looking for a new qualification in their chosen field, with further options. The new construction degree has been designed to meet an increasing need in the industry, with graduates of the programme able to practice as quantity surveyors, construction managers and project managers in a constructionoriented environment. Head of SIT’s Trades Faculty, Doug Rodgers says this new degree includes areas such as building information modelling, sustainable practice and green technologies to reflect modern industry practice. “Demand in industry is very high in these areas and employment prospects are very good.” The Bachelor of Architectural Technology is being introduced to meet a significant industry need for highly-skilled technical architectural designs, with graduates expected to be employed as
architectural designers and technicians, says Doug. “This is a unique architectural degree with a focus on high-end architectural drawing and design with the inclusion of the deeper technical aspects of architecture. “These include material science, structural building systems, sustainable construction methods, integrated environmental systems and modern construction technology,” he says. In addition to these new degrees and graduate diplomas, SIT will continue to offer students the Level 6 Diploma in Architectural technology that requires two years of full-time study on-campus. A recent recruit to the Architectural diploma, Tamar Mareroa returned to New Zealand after spending seven years in Australia. She chose to return to New Zealand to study at SIT in Invercargill, with the Zero Fees Scheme further prompting her decision. “It really was a no brainer for me,” she says. “When compared to other institutes who offer the diploma, SIT makes economic sense when you’re not eligible for the Government scheme.” Enrolling in the Architectural Technology diploma is Tamar’s first step in testing the waters to find her ideal career.
New Zealand Diploma In Architectural Technology student Tamar Mareroa
“I’d like to find the role that leads to a career, hence starting with a diploma with the aim of finding scope across the construction industry, and where I’ll fit in. Tamar is enjoying the interaction she has with members of the industry in Invercargill and how supportive local firms are of SIT students. “Of the three architecture firms in Invercargill, we have two directors as tutors, which is amazing,” she says.

WHAT’S NEW WITH 5G
If there's one piece of technology that's head-and-shoulders more exciting than anything else it's 5G. This is the technology that will be powering driverless cars, the Internet of Things, virtual reality (if that ever happens). And yes, most importantly of all, making the download speeds of our smartphones even faster. It will be faster – a lot faster! The biggest way 5G will be different from 4G is in its download and upload speeds and latency (the delay that occurs when transmitting data from a device to its network). This will have huge implications for virtual and augmented reality tech and will change our whole online experience. Will you need to upgrade your phone? Unfortunately, before being able to use 5G, you will need to upgrade to a device that is compatible with the new network.

TOOL PROTECT
Tool theft is a growing problem in New Zealand, with equipment often stolen from the back of utes, cars and even construction sites. The theft of power tools are also a common currency for drugs. The impact of such a crime isn’t limited to cost of replacement, it can also mean jobs need to be cancelled until new equipment is purchased impacting livelihoods. Claiming on insurance can be a lengthy process and unless proper records are kept the full repayment value may not be paid. Thieves will find stealing work tools a little harder thanks to an Aussie mother of four and registered nurse who has created an app to foil their plans. Gayle Neville from Brisbane came up with the novel idea to create a virtual tool box where tradies could register all of their equipment, including serial numbers, in one safe location. In the event of items being stolen, the records stored on the app called Tool Protect could be accessed quickly and tools later identified if recovered. The idea was hatched after listening to her husband Dan, a police officer, talk about his frustration at how little could be done to recover stolen tools. With the help of her four adult sons – and their wives - Mrs Neville released Tool Protect onto the Australian market in June this year. Already 2,300 tradies have signed up to trial the app. They have now launch in New Zealand and are excited to offer tradies the opportunity to fight back against tool theft. Tool Protect allows information to be stored in one convenient place with information ready to be sent to police, insurers and even tool shops where they can be reordered. Tradies take a photo of each tool which is recorded with its serial number and any other identifiable mark “It will make stealing tools harder because the serial numbers of stolen tools will be available to police,” Mrs Neville said. “It will shut down stolen tools sold through second hand stores. I really want to make it harder for these grubs to steal equipment from honest and hardworking tradies – we want to be able to fight back.”
Small businesses, service vehicles or tradespeople, we cover your vehicle in case of a breakdown 24/7, 365 days a year AA Business Care also gives you access to AA Smartful discounts, free Specsaver eye exams, discounted EVENT cinema tickets and more...
DOWNLOAD NOW Tool Protect is available to download for a free (limited time only) 12 month trial. After the trial, users can sign up for a $28 per year fee. It is available through the App stores of both Apple and Android devices. It has been uniquely designed for convenient use on phones and tablets. It also allows the user to call the police from a button within the app.

7 TIPS
TO AVOID AN UNPLEASANT SURPRISES ON YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY BREAK!
It's easy to forget things when you're thinking about summer holidays, as well as rushing to finish off projects for demanding customers. Here are seven things you should remember: 1. Secure your sites before you go (and take your tools with you) They're more vulnerable to thieves when closed up for the holidays, as no one is regularly on site and neighbours may be away. Make sure they're as secure as possible and take your tools off site, and out of your truck, and put them somewhere safe.
This means leaving some curtains open, putting lights on a timer, having someone clear your letter box (and ideally mow the lawns) while you’re away.
2. Remember to arrange travel insurance well before you leave
6. Insure any new jewellery, motorbikes, vehicles, boats, caravans, motor homes, expensive electronics (smartphones & iPads), jet skis, guns, rods or other toys before you drive them away or leave them unattended
Don't leave it to the last minute, you might not be able to get it at short notice, and it's even more difficult once you've started your trip. And don't even think about going overseas without it. Compared to the cost of medical treatment, lost luggage or cancelled plans it's well worth it.
It may be the last thing on your mind but it's important to arrange insurance on any expensive purchases before you pick them up. This includes increasing your contents sum insured and notifying your insurer of items that must be separately listed on your contents policy, such as jewellery.
3. Notify your insurer in writing if you’re going away for a long period
Murphy's Law says it's in the small window between picking up the new car and arranging the insurance that an accident will happen! And thieves are very active over holiday breaks, so any expensive gifts should be insured too.
House insurance policies have exclusions if a property is unoccupied for a period of time, which could be as short as 14 days. Check your policy and if you’re going away for a long break make sure you’ve let them know.
4. Are you having house sitters or AirBnB guests over the holidays? You need to inform your insurer if this is something you regularly do or you risk not being covered.
34
5. Take sensible precautions before you leave home
ISSUE 16 JAN/FEB/MAR 2020 WWW.TRADIENZ.CO.NZ
7. Make sure you’re roadworthy (vehicles and trailers) Check your registration and warrant are up to date and the vehicle is in good condition before taking off on a road trip (tire pressure OK, lights work, oil checked etc). This equally applies to your trailer (tires, lights, chassis, axle and towbar). Don’t overload your trailer either, in the event of an accident this may affect your insurance. Finally, remember to check that your drivers license is current!

Tips to protect your valuable assets There’s no doubt that without your tools you wouldn’t be able to work – so they need to be protected. All too often tradies are a target for thieves looking for a quick score. And whilst you’ll never be able to prevent thieves from attempting to steal your tools, there’s a few simple things you can do to protect them and your business.
KEEP THEM SECURE It might seem obvious, but it’s easy to get complacent and leave them lying around. Tools that are not being used should be put away securely and out of sight from would-be-thieves. If you have a ute, invest in a bolted down toolbox with solid hinges and a heavy duty lock. At the end of the day take them home and only leave them in your vehicle if it’s kept in a locked garage, or remove them from your vehicle and secure them.
MARK YOUR TOOLS Marking or engraving your tools will as act as a deterrent as it’s harder to re-sell them if they can be identified, as well as helping you to keep
track of them on a worksite. Engraving them also makes it easier to recover them if they are stolen, as it can assist the police with tracking you down as the owner.
TOOLS INSURANCE Most of us don’t have the cash on hand to replace our tools immediately if they are stolen or even damaged, so the best way to ensure you’re not left high and dry is to insure your tools.
MAINTAIN AN INVENTORY When it comes to making a claim most tradies don’t realise the true cost of replacement until it’s too late, so make sure you have the right level of cover and can make a claim quickly by keeping an inventory of your tools (including serial numbers, photographs and receipts). To save on your Portable Equipment Cover, you can get multiple quotes online in minutes, from top-rated insurers – visit bizcover.co.nz or call 0508 249 268.

SAFETY
GET YA GRILL ON There are many barbecues available and some are better than others depending on what you want to cook, the space you have and your particular preference. Despite what some fervent grillers say, one isn’t necessarily superior to the other. There are pros and cons to both grilling methods, so it’s really your call! Here’s a rundown of some of the pros and cons:
Charcoal
Essential Kiwi BBQ items for the table
There’s a full range of prices: inexpensive grills are easy to find, and upscale models are available too. Charcoal does get very hot and needs to be manually lit and preheated for 30 minutes. The benefit of charcoal though gives you that smokey flavor every time. Kettle barbecues are great as you can cook whole legs of lamb with the smokey flavor to enhance the meat. However It can be hard to keep the temperature constant but you get to play with real fire!
Gas Gas barbecues do offer convenience and predictability. Gas barbecues are pricier than charcoal but there are inexpensive models available. The more complicated they are the more chance of parts breaking though. Gas is easy to clean (and you’re not handling charcoal) and instant and you can use woodchips in a smoker box to get that smoky flavor in. Pick one with a lid and check it has a couple of burners (or more) and there is no reason not to be able to grill, roast and even low and slow cooking.

ISSUE 16 JAN/FEB/MAR 2020 WWW.TRADIENZ.CO.NZ
STEAK Steak is always a winner in New Zealand barbecues. Choose a nice thick cut, marinade it in advance, bring it to room temperature and oil it before cooking on the preheated grill SAUSAGES aka Bangers need to be rotated regularly to ensure they’re cooked evenly. WHITE BREAD & TOM SAUCE These are to accompany your sausages. To stay true to tradition, make sure your tomato sauce is of the Wattie’s variety. POTATO SALAD Summer is as much salad season as it is a BBQ one. Potato salad tends to be the most popular option at BBQ’s. Just boil some potatoes, add whatever extras you might be craving, let everything cool and finish things off with a generous coating of mayonnaise.

SUMMER BBQ
CORN ON THE COB Char-grilled corn on the cob is an inexpensive, tasty and healthy option that’s loved by many. See recipe
Corn on the Cob Ingredients:
Hints and Tips
Corn Cobs in the husk, herb butter, seasoning
A CLEAN GRILL Grates should be cleaned to prevent buildup of bacteria, which could be transferred to the next food you cook.
Method:
TOOLS Use one set of tongs for raw foods and another for cooked to avoid transferring bacteria. Similarly, don’t place cooked food on the same platter that held raw meat. Try not to use a fork as this will cause the meat to lose juices. LUBE JOB The more you oil your grill, the more non-stick it the grill becomes. HOLD THE SAUCE One of the biggest mistakes people make is applying sweet sugary sauce at the beginning of the cooking process. If you add it too early it’s more likely to burn. Instead, brush it on during the last five to 10 minutes of cooking. NO PEEKING Each time the lid is raised, heat escapes and your food will take longer to cook.
Place the corn on the grill, close the cover and grill for 15 to 20 minutes, turning every 5 minutes, or until kernels are tender when pierced with a paring knife. Remove the husks and then brush with herb butter and grill slightly for that charcoal look. Spread some more of the herb butter and season with salt and pepper!
Tip: Soak corn for 10 minutes ion water prior to grilling as this will stop the husk from burning

Last Wednesday a passenger in a uber heading for the airport, leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the uber, nearly hit a bus, drove up on the curb and stopped inches from heading into a plate glass window.

For a few moments everything was silent in the uber. Then, the shaking driver said, “Are you okay? I’m so sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me.” The badly shaken passenger apologised to the driver and said, “I didn’t realise that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly.” The driver replied, “No, no, I am the one who is sorry, it’s entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a uber. I’ve been driving a hearse for 25 years.”
