Construction boom sees NAWIC expand to New Plymouth More women than ever are joining New Zealand’s booming construction industry with a 40 per cent increase in National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) members over the past year sparking the launch of the first regional satellite chapter in New Plymouth. The New Plymouth NAWIC group will operate as a satellite chapter of NAWIC Wellington. NAWIC president Donna Howell is excited about providing more support to women in construction who live and work in Taranaki. “Over the last year we’ve had an increasing number of women from outside the main centres requesting support from NAWIC. We’ve decided to start with New Plymouth as our first satellite chapter due to the large number of requests from the Taranaki area. “It is thrilling to see NAWIC grow from the three existing chapters in Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury out into the regional areas. We hope to expand into other regional areas to support women in construction all over New Zealand.
“It is particularly exciting to see younger women changing the face of the industry. There has never been a better time to be a woman in construction with plenty of opportunities, such as operating your own business, available to women across the sector.” Donna hopes that the launch of NAWIC’s regional chapters will also lead to an increase of women in senior positions within the construction industry throughout New Zealand. “While it is fantastic to see increasing numbers of women choosing a career in construction, this isn’t reflected in the participation of women at a decision-making level and as we expand we hope to see an upswing in the numbers of women holding senior positions.” NAWIC launched its New Plymouth satellite chapter on Tuesday 13th June. The Tradie meets…
Michael Whiddett, also known as “Mad Mike”, is a New Zealand drifting racer. He is sponsored by Red Bull. Mike raced motocross from the age of six and now is a professional in his field.
This year I’m pumped to join the CRC Speedshow and bring the crowds some wild displays of drifting and also put some lucky people into the passenger seat of our BADBUL Mazda RX8 in the Live Action Arena. The CRC Speedshow brings together so many forms of motorsport and provides the attendees the opportunity to meet the drivers, take part in seminars and Q&A sessions. I will be around at the show all weekend and you can catch me in the live action arena, the signing sessions and come and join us for “30mins with MadMike” where I will run over where and how I started on my career and answer your questions. I will also have the MADBUL Mazda RX7 there for those who are yet to see the new look with the Rocket Bunny Boss FD Kit in the flesh - See you there! Mad Mike has always had a passion for all things extreme and fast, right from his first 3wheeled trike as a toddler he was never content with riding on the flat his mother Sue says he had to race down steep hills and over ramps!! Mike raced motocross from the age of 6 and preadolescence he also competed in BMX. Eventually Mike transitioned into the extreme sport of Freestyle Motocross to compete pro for 3yrs. The 3 year stint had mixed results and his many broken bones and concussions earned him the nick name ‘Mad Mike’. It was after one too many injuries that he made the switch to another form of motorsport, which gave him the same rush of adrenaline but with the safety of a roll-cage and thus his DRIFTING career was born in 2007.

The event was a hit and returned again to Auckland in 2014 seeing drivers from USA, JAPAN and Australia with Mike taking home top bragging rights. Mike was the first NZ Drift driver to receive an award from Motorsport New Zealand for Outstanding Achievement. 2015 also saw the completion of the Mazda MX5 - RADBUL which made its debut outing in the Formula Drift USA series. With Mike closing the season,Voted as the ‘Fan Favorite’. RADBUL was also the 2015 Top Feature car on Speedhunters. com & won Feature car of the Year in NZ Performance Car Magazine. ABU DHABI AWAITS ALEX MITO apprentice Alex Banks discovered her passion for refinishing at only 15 years of age while completing an automotive taster course during her schooling in Australia. “The course covered lots of different areas but I completely fell in love with refinishing and wanted to make a career out of it!” says Alex. Full of motivation, she left school shortly afterwards and enrolled in a year long pre-apprenticeship course. In 2013, she made the move to New Zealand but struggled to find a job in the refinishing industry. “I gave up on refinishing for a while because I was having so much trouble finding work. To be honest, not many people wanted to take on a young girl,” says Alex. Still wanting to use her creativity, she completed polytechnic courses in both make-up and special effects makeup but couldn’t ignore her dream of becoming a refinisher and decided to persist in her search for employment. Alex is currently an Apprentice Automotive Refinisher at Stokes Valley Collision Repair Centre and it’s clear that it’s the job for her. Having recently enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Collision Repair and Automotive Refinishing (Level 3) eLearning programme through MITO, she grasps every opportunity she can. “I just love being in the workshop – transforming a damaged car

“I completely fell in love with refinishing and wanted to make a career out of it.” to look brand new again is extremely satisfying. My favourite part is being in the booth painting, but I actually really enjoy cleaning the cars too. If I wasn’t a painter, I’d probably be a car groomer!” laughs Alex. Now 21 years old, Alex’s perseverance to find a job in the industry has already paid off. She says it was her supervisor, Drew Avery, who suggested she enter WorldSkills - a global event that brings young people from 77 countries together to compete in their respective trade. “Drew told me about WorldSkills and was confident that I would do well, so, I went along to the first round. I ended up winning a gold medal which I didn’t expect at all. In addition, I qualified for the Oceania competition in Melbourne and WorldSkills International in Abu Dhabi - so it turns out that Drew was right!”
SAFETY AUTOMOTIVE With an impressive career himself, Drew is a great mentor to Alex. Having been to the 2011 WorldSkills competition in London, where he gained a Medallion of Excellence, he went on to be a judge at the 2012 National WorldSkills competition and helped to train New Zealand’s 2013 WorldSkills team. Drew’s confident that Alex will not only succeed at the upcoming competition, but in her career too. “Alex is extremely hard-working and committed,” says Drew. “She’s at work early every morning with a great attitude, which is why she’s achieved so much in such a short amount of time. A first-year apprentice painting in the booth every week is pretty amazing - she’s really excelling in her work.” While Alex is looking forward to competing, she’s aware that it will be a challenge. “I’m really excited to see how skilled the
other competitors are but I know it’ll be tough.” Nevertheless, her comprehensive training will undoubtedly prepare her well and MITO’s sponsorship will provide valuable financial assistance. Despite having limited spare time due to competition preparation and completing her MITO training programme, Alex hasn’t stopped thinking about her future. “I’d love to get into airbrushing one day. It looks like such a challenge and it would be amazing to master it, but my long-term dream is to own a workshop so I’ve got to get qualified first.” It’s obvious that Alex is an apprentice to watch and her experiences at WorldSkills International in Abu Dhabi will certainly be something to look out for!
CUSTOM CAREER TAILOR-MADE As an apprentice motorsport technician at Possum Bourne Motorsport in Pukekohe, nineteen-year-old Daniel Barber gets to design and build products for race and performance cars – and has found a passion for custom fabrication. His typical day involves building exhausts, doing custom intercooler piping and then installing parts on cars. “Another big part of my job is working on the Possum Bourne rally car,” says Daniel. “I get to upgrade that and design and create parts for it too.” While at school, Daniel loved making things with his hands and excelled at engineering. He achieved NCEA Level 3 with university entrance but decided that the university path wasn’t going to be for him. “I thought it would be much more beneficial to get straight into the industry and learn through an apprenticeship,” says Daniel. “I could have easily gone to university and studied something like engineering, but nothing about sitting through lectures appealed to me. I didn’t really see how that could help me and my career in the motorsport industry. Instead, I knew the hands-on approach of on-the-job training could teach me a whole lot more and I’d get exposed to the industry early on in my career.” Daniel got in touch with Possum Bourne Motorsport General Manager Julius Bloem, to register his interest in some work experience while he completed a motorsport course at Manukau Institute of Technology. “Daniel contacted us as he was really keen about pursuing a job in the industry,” Julius says. “We took him on part-time and quickly saw a lot of potential in him. There is a huge demand for skilled technicians so we didn’t hesitate in offering Daniel an apprenticeship. What really stood out for me was his massive desire to learn and work hard - two traits that are really important in this industry. So, we just had to snap him up!” Completing a National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) with strand in Light Vehicle (Level 3 and 4) through MITO, Daniel spends a good part of the day working alongside the other technicians in the workshop. As an on-the-job learner, it’s something that he thoroughly enjoys.
“It’s definitely one of the benefits of doing an apprenticeship.You’re working with senior technicians who have so much experience and knowledge that they can pass on to you.” The relationship is mutually enjoyed. “We really like having an apprentice as part of the team,” says Julius. “I’ve seen a really positive impact on our workplace culture – the senior technicians all enjoy teaching Daniel and passing on their knowledge to someone so keen and able. It gives their work even more meaning and creates a great atmosphere in the workplace.” But the benefits don’t stop there for Daniel. “Getting an industrybased qualification means I’m able to earn and learn – effectively getting paid to study! I come to work, learn all the cool things about the industry while on the job and earn money at the same time. Plus, getting qualified through an apprenticeship is a great reflection of my skills and knowledge and will allow me to take my career world-wide.” With an obvious passion and enthusiasm for the industry, Daniel recently received both a $300 monetary grant, presented by The Fellowship of the Motor Industry and a 2017 MITO Kick Start scholarship – contributing $1,000 towards the first year fees of his apprenticeship. “I was so excited to find out I had received the grant and scholarship,” said Daniel. “Something like that is invaluable in giving me a kick start in my career.” It’s obviously a career that’s tailor-made for Daniel.

top tradies step up to the challenge Entries for the Registered Master Builders CARTERS 2017 Apprentice of the Year have now closed, with more than 120 apprentices entering from across the country. They will go head to head for the sought-after title and share of more than $100,000 worth of prizes.
New Zealand is currently facing its biggest ever building boom. The Government is investing $14.4 million in industry training over the next four years to help fill the nationwide construction skills shortage so this competition comes at the perfect time to highlight the urgent need for more apprentices. Registered Master Builders Chief Executive David Kelly says that apprenticeships should be more than an alternative to university for young people, as they are vital for New Zealand’s economic growth and development in this period of unprecedented demand. “With the construction skills shortage currently facing the building and construction industry, the value of an apprenticeship has never been higher. This competition promotes the opportunities out there for talented young people and school leavers thinking about pursuing a career in the trades,” he says. “Apprenticeships offer the chance to earn as you learn and be a part of an industry with strong job prospects and opportunities for growth. This needs to be recognised and supported by parents and teachers to attract more young people to the trades. “It is great to see so many young apprentices stepping up to make their mark on the industry through this competition and we wish them all the best as the regional competitions gets underway.” The Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) Chief Executive Warwick Quinn says they are proud to support an event that fosters the young talent in the building and construction industry. “The construction industry is in desperate need of skilled apprentices. While the Government has announced that 43,000 New Zealanders are currently engaged in an apprenticeship this is still nowhere near enough to meet demand,” he says. “We need thousands more apprentices each year, which means attracting new recruits to the industry is critical. Apprentice of the Year is a fantastic way to promote this by showing young people the opportunity and growth that exists in the trades. “This competition showcases the best in the industry and we look forward to watching these talented apprentices grow into leaders of the future.” Regional judging is made up of two stages - an initial entry submission and then for the top 100, an interview with the judging panel and an onsite visit where contestants will discuss their project.

The winning apprentice from each region will receive $2,000 to spend at CARTERS, a place at an Outward Bound course, and a range of products and tools. All entrants receive an apprenticeship membership to the Registered Master Builders Association. They will be vying for the national title of Registered Master Builders CARTERS 2017 Apprentice of the Year. It’s all about attitude. Gender no issue in Flooring. Mafi Jack was still at school and had no idea what she wanted to do when she completed her final year. Flooring industry facts The flooring sector is reaching crisis point – demand for new homes and other builds is at unprecedented levels, but we don’t have enough people to keep up. The sector needs to attract new people, increase the number of people in training, and increase the number of people gaining qualifications. Flooring is expected to grow by 1,000 workers (16%) by 2020. The sector needs around 2,500 new people over the next five years to meet new growth targets and replace people who leave the sector. • Currently, about 35% of flooring workers have a Level 4 qualification or higher. • To maintain this level about 180 people need to complete qualifications each year. However, currently, only around 75 people complete a qualification each year. • The average age of workers in the Flooring industry is 44 years. • 50% of the New Zealand population is female. • 2.7% of floor finishers are female • Do your business a favour and find a female for an apprenticeship.
Tips for finding an apprentice Flooring apprentice Mafi Jack is valued and respected by the team at Carpet Court Pukekohe.
The Gateway Coordinator at her high school contacted Simon Price at Carpet Court to ask if he would host a female student one day each week. Mafi was privileged to be chosen and found she enjoyed the time spent out on the job with the installers and Carpet Court found she fitted in really well. Fortunately, Mafi has a sister who encouraged her to take up the apprenticeship which Carpet Court offered. Sister Chrissy also supported Mafi by buying her a car to get to work each day and looked after her. Mafi has found the guys are really nice “and not mean”. They are “too nice really and ask me nicely”. Simon says, “Mafi uses her initiative, she is strong and fits in really well with the guys. She’s such a neat kid and has earned respect.” He also commented that at times he has found it an advantage having a female in the team, particularly when dealing with a tricky female customer. He says Mafi has been brilliant for these occasions. For Mafi, her future looks bright. She says her immediate goal is to focus on her apprenticeship (carpet installation vinyl and preparation) and gain more experience. After that, she is interested in branching out into different types of flooring - timber and laminate installation.
• There may be plenty of people who have been made redundant, who have good work ethics, need a job and are practical. What opportunities are there in your area like this? • Do you show on your quotes and invoices that your company has an apprenticeship available? Remember in both cases – giving career advice to young adults in the family and deciding whether to accept a quote for work often fall to the woman in a household. • Do you have a sign on your company vehicle - “We are hiring apprentices now.”? • Have you registered your vacancy with BCITO’s Job Matching service 0800 422 486? • Talk to everyone you know – you wouldn’t believe how many apprentices are employed through word of mouth. • Stay in touch with both your BCITO Training Advisor and also the local college Gateway coordinator or career advisor.

Awards for New Zealand’s top apprentice electricians Three outstanding apprentice electricians recently had their talents recognised at an inspiring awards ceremony in Cambridge, Waikato. Connor Gotty, Rochelle Arnold, and Hannah Todd were the winners of the inaugural Smiths Electrical Scholarships, which reward the most dedicated apprentices in the industry. The trio received their scholarships, worth thousands of dollars each, at an official ceremony at Smiths’ Cambridge headquarters on May 17. The scholarships are a joint initiative between Smiths, a leading New Zealand electrical parts supplier, and Skills. Ideal Electrical, another top electrical supplier, sponsored one of the awards. With the Government reporting an increase of 6,800 apprentices (nearly 19 per cent) since 2012, the scholarships aim to help New Zealand reach its goal of 50,000 apprentices by 2020. “Simply put, New Zealand needs more skilled electricians, and we need them now,” said Lance Riesterer, Skills’ General Manager – Specialist Trades & Commercial. “These scholarships recognise the future leaders of the industry. Notably, two of the three winners are from the Waikato region, and it’s great to see there’s talent in all areas of the country.”
The awards ceremony provided the opportunity for several industry leaders to offer words of wisdom to the winners, and to the industry in general. Cecile Smith, one of the founders of Smiths, spoke about the need to “take a page out of the book” of thriving countries that promote vocational education. She emphasised the importance of instilling a culture of innovation in New Zealand’s youth, and urged them to continually strive for excellence.

Major construction firms unite on health and safety Arrow International, Cassidy Construction, Dominion Constructors, Fletcher Construction, Hawkins Construction, Leighs Construction, Naylor Love and NZ Strong have signed an agreement committing to standardise their approach to on-site health and safety. As a not-for-profit membership organisation set up by the industry to support improved health and safety, Site Safe will facilitate the implementation of decisions made by the group. Site Safe Chief Executive Alison Molloy welcomed the commitment. “The companies supporting this agreement, and Site Safe, know that working together to standardise and improve health and safety practice will achieve far greater benefits and enable subcontractors and their workers to have better consistency about what is required of them.” The signatories have agreed to work together on several priority areas, including standard requirements for safety gear, prequalification, alcohol and drug testing, and certain high-risk activities. A further key area is how to best ensure workers are fully engaged in their own and others’ health and safety. They have also agreed to share their health and safety performance with each other, and to standardise how this performance is measured, so that better information on health and safety practice and improvement is available to all.

Site Safe launches online learning Site Safe has launched its first-ever blended online course.
The not-for-profit membership health and safety organisation has designed a new course combining the advantages of online and inclass learning, so trainees will now have even more flexibility when they renew Site Safety Cards (Passports). Chief Executive Alison Molloy says the new course will extend workers’ health and safety knowledge, while also providing companies with another cost-effective training option. “Our latest course, which gives trainees access to a range of online modules as well as in-class time with a health and safety expert, is a direct result of feedback from the industry. Our new online modules are worker-focused, and allow trainees to choose the topics that are directly relevant to the real-life risks they face on site.” The Passport Plus - Flexi (Online + Classroom) is now open for online bookings and will be available at a special introductory price for the first six months. Trainees select any two modules from a regularly updated online library, which currently includes: asbestos, noise, worker basics, manual handling, mobile plant and electrical safety. With the 14

If there’s one asset a tradie will have insured it’s their ute/van/wagon/truck. Have you got it right?
As an aside, we strongly recommend all tradies insure their most important asset: themselves. When you’re self employed being off work for any length of time can seriously affect your income. Loss of earnings insurance, in combination with a reduction in your ACC levies, can broaden your protection to include cover for illness & sickness as well as accident, and for little or no extra cost. But that’s for another issue. Below are 8 tips to help ensure you have the right cover and are getting the best value from your policy. 1. Get your sum insured right: it affects your premium and what you’ll get in the event of a claim
It’s also the biggest source of dispute between customers and their insurer when it comes to claim time. Make sure the “sum insured” for your vehicle is set at an accurate current market value. This figure is what your premium is based on. It’s also the lower of this sum insured or the actual market value at the time of loss on which any payout or repair will be based. Setting your sum insured too high over the vehicle’s market value means you’ll be paying too much. But setting it too low means you’re under insured. At renewal time get a valuation or try searching Trademe Motors for a vehicle like yours of a similar age, condition and mileage. The sum insured is your vehicle’s market value excluding GST. 2. Replacing your windscreen is painless
Replacing a broken windscreen is easy when you’re insured. There’s no excess or claim form to complete. Simply take the vehicle in to your nearest Smith & Smith or Novus, along with the name of your insurer and policy number. We recommend you phone head with your VIN number so they can make sure a suitable windscreen is in stock. Most policies offer unlimited windscreen cover, however some are limited to one claim per year. Some cover all the glass in your vehicle, including canopies, while others won’t. 3. Arrange insurance for new vehicles before you pick them up
You’ll want to be insured as soon as you drive off the lot, but leaving it to the last minute could make getting it in time difficult. The best advice is to let your broker or insurer know in advance, so they can “hold covered” for you. If you already have cover in place on another vehicle the policy may include an “additions & deletions” clause. This means new vehicles will be covered for their market value as long as you tell your insurer within 30 days of the purchase (and there may be additional premium to pay). If you need finance the dealership will want to see an insurance certificate before releasing the vehicle, another reason to have it arranged early. 18

4. Is your signwriting covered?
Some policies will automatically include cover for signwriting, but others will only do so if it is separately noted. Either way, we recommend you check to make sure it’s covered by your policy and included in the sum insured. 5. Get back on the road while your ute’s under repair
Adding a “loss of use” extension to your policy means you can hire a replacement vehicle while yours is being repaired. There are conditions, such as extra premium, a stand down period and maximum hire time, but the inconvenience of being without a vehicle, or having to hire one yourself, could cost you more. 6. Check that all staff who may drive the vehicle have a license
Assuming the apprentice has a license just because they’re old enough is not good enough. It’s important for insurance purposes as it’s a condition of insurance that any driver has your consent and is legally allowed to drive it, has a current license and is not breaching any condition of their license when driving it. It’s also sensible from a health & safety responsibility perspective. According to ACC “it is your responsibility as an employer to ensure that any employee who drives any kind of vehicle is legally able to do so. That means they must have the right category of licence and it must be valid, i.e. it must not be suspended, expired or revoked.” 7. Claims registered too late may be declined
Your insurer may decline a claim if you’ve taken too long to make it. Damage that occurred 6 months ago may be considered preexisting and any further loss, such as rust that has set in, may not be covered. 8. Trailers should be insured as commercial vehicles
They’re considered vehicles for the purposes of insurance and won’t be covered under a tools or mobile assets policy. When connected to your ute a trailer may be covered under that vehicle’s policy for damage that happens. But it’s not covered for theft or when it’s not connected to a vehicle. With some policies, such as Builtin’s, trailers up to a certain value are included free with a commercial vehicle policy, but they must be listed on the policy. Based on the hugely popular formula established by Dig This Las Vegas, guests will now be able to live out their wildest fantasies operating heavy machinery, including bulldozers, excavators, mini excavators and skid steers in a giant, adult-sized sand pit.
Lex Chisholm, Dig This Invercargill Manager says: “We are all really excited about this new attraction and think it is such an awesome concept. We will have 15 tonne diggers and bulldozers for adults to test their skills. We also have smaller machinery for the kids to enjoy like 1.5 tonne diggers.” Lex also says that “couples tend to get somewhat competitive and women tend to be better than their partners due to their soft touch”.
Scheduled to open in spring 2017, Transport World is busy preparing a new site on Otepuni Avenue for future excavation.
Activities include stacking tyres, using the machinery to play basketball within tyres and also a car crushing area.

TRADIES LUNCHBOX with Belinda & Neena MKR NZ WINNERS 2014 My Kitchen Rules winner Belinda MacDonald, knows the importance of giving her man a good nutritious lunch. Husband, John MacDonald is himself a hard-working Tradie/Project Manager for Civil Construction Services, Cambridge.
The beauty of this recipe, is that you can use anything you have on hand. It’s a fantastic way to use up your leftovers! Be brave and mix it up a little. The humble fritatta is an inexpensive but tasty dish that is great for any occassion - even the lunchbox! If you dont have any leftover meat, you could just keep it primo vego. This frittata is fragrant, spicy and comforting!
Tuesday night leftover Frittata 10 eggs 120ml coconut milk, dairy or nut milk Salt & black pepper 4 Tbsp extra virgin coconut oil or animal fat 1 onion 3 - 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 200g leftover roast meat, or cold meats like salami etc.. cut into small pieces 200g leftover roast veges (e.g kumara, pumpkin, carrot), cubed 300g silverbeet, kale, or other leafy greens, torn wild edible weeds (e.g dandelion greens, chickweed) Handful herbs (e.g basil, parsley, sage, thyme) 1 red chilli, finely chopped, or dried chilli flakes Handful of pumpkin seeds or other seeds. Preheat the oven to 180C. Either use muffin pans or oven-proof pan. Crack the eggs into a bowl, whisk lightly with milk and season well with salt and pepper. Set aside. Heat the coconut oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes until soft. Stir in the meat, vegetabkes, greens, edible weeds and herbs and cook gently for 2-3 minutes until heated through. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to the muffin pans, then pour in the egg mixture, Sprinkle the chilli and pumpkin seeds on top, then bake for 35 minutes, or until golden, shiny on top and the egg is cooked through. Leave the frittata to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve with a great chutney or a yummy sauerkraut, both can be found in Belinda and Neena’s book, My Green Kitchen. One of New Zealand’s most dramatic and diverse year-round destinations, Ruapehu reaches peak form in winter, when epic snowfalls transform the region into one of the world’s premier skiing and snowboarding resorts. This month The Tradie speaks with Mike Davis one of the owners of Hunting & Fishing Rotorua. After a busy summer at the shop and before the bustling winter hunting season starts, Mike and H&F staff set out for some fishing and hunting during the quiet break in May. Mike says: “I get around 50 days a year in fishing and around 12-15 hunting trips, which are planned around our busy times at the shop”. Mike goes onto say that you’re best to target good eating fish first like Bluenose or Hapuku. Deep water fish are better eating fish. Mike uses around an 80-pound braid and jigging 500 gram jigs where the water starts from 250 metres deep to 400 metres. Once you have your fish for the table then head back towards the shallower water of the reefs where you’ll find Snapper. Mike suggests using softbait 30

or slow jig for Snapper and other inshore species. After a day’s fishing and a good night’s rest the following days sees the rain and wind. Not ideal for fishing, the lads set off for a hunt. “Deer don’t play in this kind of weather so they’re best off to find a pig as they love these conditions.” Mike goes onto say that it’s not always about the hunting element and sometimes it’s about helping the station owners with pig numbers. The day proved to be a winner with a decent size pig to take home for the Sunday roast!

There’s no doubt the calendar can be a good indicator of days where feeding times for animals and fish will be more intense so it’s worth checking before you plan that next trip. Here’s what Bill has to say: “The Bill Hohepa fishing calendar has taken information from a variety of historical sources, including Mr Best’s book, together with actual fishing research taken over the past 30 years on when and how long fish bite in relation to the moon phases. There are many variables that contribute to fish feeding habits including the effect of the moon, barometric pressure, water temperature etc, so the calendar is only a guide. One thing I have noticed though over the years, in particular, is the influence of the tide. It seems to me that the fishing is better on an incoming tide when the moon is waning, and fishing is better on the outgoing tide when the moon is waxing. If you can see the moon, the best time in my experience, is when it is at the 2 o’clock position in the sky” Excellent means up to 1 hour’s good fishing - Good means up to 30 minutes and Poor up to 15 minutes. .
