ing out for your employees,

Do you have a dual-income household? If you do, you’re not alone. More and more couples are finding that a dual income is a necessity. Not just a necessity to sustain their current standard of living, but also to help form a base for their financial future. With that in mind, you’ve probably taken steps to help protect both of your incomes with some type of life or disability insurance coverage. However, situations change and the coverage you had a few years ago may not meet your current needs. So, how do you know if you have the “right” amount of life or disability insurance for both wage earners?

One factor to consider is the value of homemaking services. For example, ately, The Principal can help. let’s say both of you earn approximately the same income, but one does more wide range of services, from around the house. WHAT’S IN YOUR CLOSET

MUSINGS OF A BOOK SELLER There are a lot of Capital Region traditions... sweeping State Street before the Tulip Fest in May; the Santa Speedo sprint in December; the convergence of thousands of motorcyclists in Lake George in June. One tradition, which is now in its 40th year, flies under most people’s radar...the Albany Institute Antiquarian Book and Ephemera Fair. Annually thirty or forty booksellers from numerous states and Canada converge in Albany to exhibit and sell their wares. Sound a little nerdy? Kind of like having afternoon tea with a bevy of scrabble aficionados? Not necessarily. Believe it or not for the past four decades somewhere between 500 and 1000 people attend. There is a vast array of material, from pop culture to scholarly history. Among my offerings will be: a 3’ x 4’ map of Albany in 1843; a letter from Mark Twain to Albany historian Cuyler Reynolds; a jigsaw puzzle featuring Teddy Roosevelt’s charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish American war; an 1890’s photograph of Buffalo Bill; a book on the motion picture industry signed by Thomas Edison. Check us out on October 19th at the Albany Institute of History and Art. You can go to www.albanybookfair.com for more info. Give us a call at Dennis Holzman Aniques. We look forward to the next opportunity to sort and research and… we buy stuff daily---single items, collections or entire estates.

Message From

Am I a Connector, Maven or salesperson..... A few years back I read the book “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s a book that has stuck with me to this day. It described how epidemics occur, not just in the medical sense, but also in the marketing and sales arena. Gladwell explained the Rules of Epidemics which included the following three items: • The Law of the Few: A tiny percentage of people do the majority of the work to build momentum. • The Stickiness Factor: Stickiness means that a message makes an impact – it’s memorable. • The Power of Context: Human beings are a lot more sensitive to their environment than they seem. I for one like the idea of the law of the few. It encourages me to know that a tiny percentage of people can have the power to build momentum and make some real progress in your group, or if your a business owner, start an epidemic in buying. Are you leading a team now or coaching a group that could benefit from this idea by finding the critical few? Who is your key team member, or most raving customer for your business? Think about it.... Identify them, seek them out and enlist their help. Within the Law of the Few the author also defined three types of people that are the impetus for starting and spreading a epidemic. The three types of individuals he defined were: 1. Mavens are socially motivated to help and they know about and figure out how to “get a deal”. They get the deal or have a unique interactive experience with a person or place and have a compelling urge to let all their friends and family know. Their peers know they are in the know and make informed decisions. 2. Connectors are people who link us up with the world… who introduce us to other social circles. Connectors are people with a special gift for bringing the different social strata of the world together. 3. Salespeople are the third type of opinion leading influencer, people with the power of persuasion. They are naturally charismatic and contagious consumers whose enthusiasm rubs off on those around them.

So time for me to reflect and pick one... Which one am I? It’s hard for me to pick as I can recite several examples, even within a one week period, of actions that would easily pigeon hole me into each type. I don’t think that is a bad thing. If I had to pick just one I would say I’m predominately a CONNECTOR. I enjoy helping people make connections with others and I’m especially joyful when I see that connection has enriched both of the parties lives. I’d say that is even better than a win-win. It’s more line a win-win-win. When people are overwhelmed with information they turn instead for advice and information to the people in their lives whom they respect, admire, and trust. The cure for our sometime maddening society is finding Mavens, Connectors, and Salespeople. They can help us focus and block out all the noise. We live in a community of Mavens, Connectors and Salespeople and each of us can claim to be one of these to some extent. Seek out those small businesses with great service and unique products and help me start an epidemic. Of course I’m talking about the SHOP SMALL epidemic. 217 Remsen St ◆ Cohoes, NY 12047 ◆ (518) 237-2110 www.marrarx.com rx@marrarx.com The Flu Vaccine – An Insurance Policy for the Whole Family No, it’s not foolproof. But an annual flu vaccine is a great way to insure against the flu. The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine each year. It’s designed to protect against the three or four flu viruses most likely to cause illness during the upcoming flu season. For most people, a flu vaccine can protect you throughout the flu season, which typically lasts from October to May. The best policy? Get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine becomes available, ideally in October. For young kids. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests the nasal spray vaccine for healthy children ages 2 through 8. For young children, it may work better than the flu shot (and be a little less scary, too). But if it’s not available early in the flu season, don’t wait. Go ahead with the flu shot. Remember: even healthy children are at risk of flu complications that are serious enough to land them in the hospital. Signs of pneumonia include chest pain and fast, difficult breathing. If you’re pregnant. In recent years, several studies have shown that the flu vaccine is safe and effective, no matter your stage of pregnancy. The flu shot protects both you and your baby. In fact, it is much more dangerous not to be vaccinated. In addition to pneumonia, the flu can lead to premature labor and other complications. If you’re pregnant, just given birth, or are breast-feeding, however, don’t get the live (nasal mist) vaccine. You should have an inactivated version instead. If you’re over 65. As you age, the flu vaccine may not last as well as it does in younger, healthier people. If you’re over 65 or have a weaker immune system, you may not create as many antibodies. And, your antibody levels may drop more quickly. A recent study has found that a high-dose flu shot is more effective in seniors than the standard dose. Approved for people 65 and older, the Fluzone High-Dose vaccine contains four times as much as the standard dose. With its use, the researchers believe that about 25 percent of flu cases in seniors could be prevented. The CDC doesn’t recommend this vaccine for all seniors, though. Be sure to talk with your doctor or me to see if it’s right for you or someone your love. Where to get a flu vaccine – Marra’s Pharmacy! Yes, we provide flu shots seven days a week during our business hours and in most situations your health insurance covers those injections for FREE! Other ways to stay healthy—and keep others healthier—throughout flu season? • Wash your hands regularly. • Stay away from sick people—as much as possible. • If you come down with the flu, stay home. •

After all, your productivity won’t matter as much if you make everyone at your workplace sick!

Ways to winterize your home You’ll get a season’s worth of savings and peace of mind by taking a few steps in the fall to get your home ready for cold weather. Clean those gutters Once the leaves fall, remove them and other debris from your home’s gutters -- by hand, by scraper or spatula, and finally by a good hose rinse -- so that winter’s rain and melting snow can drain. Clogged drains can form ice dams, in which water backs up, freezes and causes water to seep into the house, the Insurance Information Institute says. As you’re hosing out your gutters, look for leaks and misaligned pipes. Also, make sure the downspouts are carrying water away from the house’s foundation, where it could cause flooding or other water damage. The rule of thumb is that water should be at least 10 feet away from the house. Block those leaks One of the best ways to winterize your home is to simply block obvious leaks around your house. The average American home has leaks that amount to a nine-square-foot hole in the wall, according to EarthWorks Group. You have to find the leak so on a breezy day, walk around inside holding a lit incense stick to the most common drafty areas: recessed lighting, window and door frames, electrical outlets. You can buy door sweeps to close spaces under exterior doors, foam weather strip for around door frames, window seal kits for over old windows or caulk or apply tacky rope caulk to those drafty windows. Check the furnace and Change your thermostat You should turn your furnace on now, to make sure it’s even working, before the cold weather descends. A strong, odd, short-lasting smell is natural when firing up the furnace in the autumn; simply open windows to dissipate it. But if the smell lasts a long time, shut down the furnace and call a professional. Throughout the winter you should change the furnace filters regularly (check them monthly). A dirty filter impedes air flow, reduces efficiency and could even cause a fire in an extreme case. A programmable thermostat will help you keep heating cost down this winter. Make sure to set it lower while you are at work and when you go to bed since you will be under blankets anyways. Get your ducts in a row According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a home with central heating can lose up to 60% of its heated air before that air reaches the vents if ductwork is not well-connected and insulated, or if it must travel through unheated spaces. That’s a huge amount of wasted money, not to mention a chilly house. Ducts aren’t always easy to see, but you can often find them exposed in the attic, the basement and crawlspaces. Repair places where pipes are pinched, which impedes flow of heated air to the house, and fix gaps with a metal-backed tape. Ducts also should be vacuumed once every few years, to clean out the abundant dust, animal hair and other gunk that can gather in them and cause respiratory problems.

Jim 518-857-9546 ◆ Email to: Ads@OurTowneNortheast.com

Face your windows Now, of course, is the time to take down the window screens and put up storm windows, which provide an extra layer of protection and warmth for the home. Storm windows are particularly helpful if you have old, single-pane glass windows. But if you don’t have storm windows, and your windows are leaky or drafty, buy a window insulator kit. Basically, the kit is plastic sheeting that’s affixed to a window’s interior with double-stick tape. A hair dryer is then used to shrink-wrap the sheeting onto the window. This is temporary and it’s not pretty, but it’s inexpensive and it’s extremely effective. Reverse that fan By reversing its direction from the summer operation, the fan will push warm air downward and force it to recirculate, keeping you more comfortable. Here’s how you know the fan is ready for winter: as you look up, the blades should be turning clockwise. Wrap those pipes A burst pipe caused by a winter freeze is a nightmare. Prevent it before Jack Frost sets his grip: Before freezing nights hit, make certain that the water to your hose bibs is shut off inside your house (via a turnoff valve), and that the lines are drained. Next, go looking for other pipes that aren’t insulated, or that pass through unheated spaces -- pipes that run through crawlspaces, basements or garages. Wrap them with pre-molded foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation. If you’re really worried about a pipe freezing, you can first wrap it with heating tape, which is basically an electrical cord that emits heat. Invest in a hot water jacket to help Don’t forget your hot water heater Just like insulating your walls or pipes, insulating your hot water tank is an easy and inexpensive way to improve energy efficiency and save you money each month. If your water tank is new, it is likely already insulated. If you have an older hot water tank, check to see if it has insulation with an R-value of at least 24. If not, consider insulating your water tank, which could reduce heat losses by 25%–45% and save you about 4%–9% in water heating costs. If you don’t know your water heater tank’s R-value, touch it. A tank that is warm to the touch needs additional insulation. Finally, check those alarms This is a great time to check the operation and change the batteries on your home’s smoke detectors. Detectors should be replaced every 10 years, fire officials say. Test them, older ones in particular, with a small bit of actual smoke, and not just by pressing the “test” button. Check to see that your fire extinguisher is still where it should be, and still works. Also, invest in a carbon-monoxide detector; every home should have at least one.

Colonie Town Band Celebrates 50 Years

The Colonie Town Band will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a free concert, Monday, October 6 from 7-8 p.m. at Shaker Junior High School, 475 Watervliet Shaker Rd. in Latham, NY. The Colonie Town Band is a volunteer group of more than 50 dedicated musicians who donate their time and talents to perform at nursing homes, town parks, community events and other venues free of charge. In addition, band members have mentored elementary school students as they began their instrumental studies and performed concerts and outreach events with local schools. In the past year, the band has appeared at more than a dozen venues, entertaining more than 1,000 people. In many cases, the band brings music to individuals (in nursing homes, for example) who otherwise would not have access to this entertainment. Founded in 1964 by Malcolm Pappin, then Chairman of the Music Department in the North Colonie Central School District and sponsored by the Town of Colonie Department of Parks and Recreation, the Colonie Town Band includes musicians of all ages, abilities and walks of life from all over the Capital Region. Truly an intergenerational group, the band is made up of dedicated amateur musicians ranging from teenagers to octogenarians. Members reflect a range of occupations including music teacher, pharmacist, college professor, retired minister and nun, computer programmer, retired school superintendent, lawyer, scientist, and engineer. No auditions are required to join; new members are always welcome. The Band provides an opportunity for citizen-musicians to continue to enjoy their talents and share them in the community. The band exemplifies a long tradition of community bands in the US dating back to before the turn of the century. And in the spirit of giving back to the community, the band funds the Frank Mooney and George Coulter Memorial Prizes, awards given annually to two Colonie High School graduating seniors, from free-will donations received at its performances. Sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department of the Town of Colonie, the Band looks forward to another 50 years of community entertainment.

When Is It Time to Make Portfolio Changes? The kids are back at school and summer vacations are now just fading memories, so it must be autumn. But the seasons don’t just move on the calendar — they also change in your life. And, speaking of changes, you’ll have to make many of them as you move through the years — and that includes changes to your investment portfolio. But how will you know when it’s time to take action? Just as Mother Nature sends out “signals” to indicate a change in seasons — blooming flowers, falling leaves, warmer or colder temperatures, longer or shorter days, etc. — your portfolio will frequently “tell” you when you need to make adjustments. Here are a couple of indicators you may want to heed: • Out-of-balance portfolio — Even the best stocks can lose value when the overall market is down, but if you only own stocks, you could take a big hit during a downturn — and if it happens repeatedly, you may find it hard to even stay invested. After all, stocks will always fluctuate in value, and protection of your principal is not guaranteed. Yet you can at least help defend yourself against market volatility by balancing your portfolio with a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investments, with the percentage of each type of asset based on your individual goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. • “Overweighting” of individual investments — Related to the point made above, you can also have too much money kept in a single investment, such as an individual stock or bond. Sometimes, this “overweighting” can happen almost on its own, as when a stock, or stock-based vehicle, has increased so much in value that it now takes on a larger percentage of your portfolio than you had intended — possibly bringing with it more risk than you had intended, too. As a general rule, no single investment should take up more than a small percentage of your entire portfolio. Your own life may also send you some messages regarding changes you may need to make to your investment and financial strategies. Here are just a few of the milestones that may trigger necessary moves: • New child — You’ll need to review your life insurance to make sure it’s sufficient to help provide for a newborn or newly adopted child, should anything happen to you. You may also want to begin investing in a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. • New job — Assuming your new job offers you a retirement plan, such as a 401(k) or similar vehicle, you’ll have some choices to make. How much can you afford to contribute? How should you allocate your dollars among the investment choices offered in the plan? How can you best integrate your 401(k) or other plan into your overall investment portfolio to avoid duplication? • Impending retirement — As you enter retirement, you may want to adjust your portfolio to help reduce its short-term fluctuations and to provide more current income opportunities. At the same time, you may still need to invest for growth — you could be retired for two or three decades, and you’ll need to stay ahead of inflation. Pay close attention to the messages coming from your portfolio — and from your life. These “signals” will give you a good idea of when it’s time to make the right investment-related moves. It is such a simple thing, but don’t be fooled by its simplicity. Sometimes the simple tools are the most effective (because you actually stand a shot at using them). Breath is vital to life and proper breath is vital to good health. Breath is the only function in your body that you can easily control both consciously and unconsciously. Why is this important? This means that by working with your breath, you can balance your sympathetic and your parasympathetic branches of your involuntary nervous system. When the sympathetic system is overactive (due to extended periods of real or perceived stress), it results in increased heart rate, atrial fibrillation, increased blood pressure, chronic digestive issues, cold hands, and much more. So by using breath, you can regulate and balance the involuntary nervous system. Which takes you out of the “fight or flight” response and allows your body to focus on healing and regeneration rather than being on a constant state of alert, stress. It’s simple, but incredibly powerful and anyone can do it. Answers can be found on page 19

621 Albany-Shaker Road Loudonville (518) 458.9274 www.colonie.org/LIBRARY Scholarship for the Yiddish Nation: YIVO and the Making of Modern Jewish Culture Tuesday October 7th at 7:00 PM: This lecture, by Cecile Kuznitz of Bard College, is sponsored by the Colonie Jewish Community Association and UAlbany’s Judaic Studies Department. About the talk: “Founded by a group of Eastern European intellectuals after World War I, YIVO became both the apex of secular Yiddish culture and the premier institution of Diaspora Nationalism, which fought for Jewish rights throughout the world at a time of rising anti-Semitism. From its headquarters in Vilna, Poland, YIVO tried to balance scholarly objectivity with its commitment to the Jewish masses.” Special Education Law and Practice in New York State: An Informational Session for Parents and Caregivers of Children with Special Needs Designed to Educate, Empower, and Encourage This 90-minute session, on Thursday October 9th at 6:30 PM, is designed to assist parents and caregivers to become the best possible advocates for their children when navigating the special education system by providing a comprehensive overview of special education law, practice, and service delivery options in New York State for the pre-school and school age child. Noon Author Talk: The 2014 Flannery O’Connor Award Winner Our Noon Author Talk on Thursday, October 16, welcomes Karin Lin-Greenberg, winner of the 2014 Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. Karin teaches at Siena College and her first book of stories is titled Faulty Predictions. From the publisher: “In Karin Lin-Greenberg’s Faulty Predictions, young characters try to find their way in the world and older characters confront regrets. In ‘Editorial Decisions,’ members of the editorial board of a high school literary magazine are witnesses to an unspeakable act of violence. Two grandmothers, both immigrants from China, argue over the value of their treasures at a filming of Antiques Roadshow in ‘Prized Possessions.’ In ‘A Good Brother,’ a sister forces her brother to accompany her to the Running of the Brides at Filene’s Basement. A city bus driver adopts a pig that has been brought onto the bus by rowdy college students in ‘Designated Driver.’ The stories in Faulty Predictions take place in locales as diverse as small-town Ohio, the mountains of western North Carolina, and the plains of Kansas. Lin-Greenberg provides insight into the human

condition over a varied cross section of geography, age, and culture. Although the characters are often faced with obstacles and challenges, the stories also capture moments of optimism and hope.” Author Lori Ostlund says of Karin’s stories: “Faulty Predictions is, as the name suggests, about all of the ways that we expect more or less than we should from other people – parents, friends, lovers–as well as ourselves. The people who inhabit these stories are complicated and struggling and often hilarious. Karin Lin-Greenberg offers everything I come to fiction hoping for – engaging narrators, precise observation, surprise, and finally compassion for the ways in which we are, all of us, flawed. Readers, you are in for a treat.” Karin’s talk/reading begins at 12:15; bring your lunch if you are on lunch hour. Karin’s Colonie TV interview: http://vimeo.com/104404650 Film Series Continues Our American Cinema and WW II series continues this month, hosted by Lenny Zapala – film expert and Director of the Menands Public Library. On Thursday night, October 23rd, at 6:30 PM, Lenny will be showing the 1939 film Confessions of a Nazi Spy plus a newsreel and a short from that time. The film stars Edward G. Robinson and Lenny’s introduction is under the heading “Hollywood Warns the Nation.” The film was a major worldwide box office hit for Warner Brothers and won the year’s National Board of Review award for Best Film. Confessions of a Nazi Spy was banned in Germany, Japan, and many Latin American and European countries when it came out. Capital District Genealogical Society: “One Step Website” A Potpourri of Genealogical Search Tools The CDGS’s guest speaker on Saturday October 25th will be the world recognized genealogist Stephen Morse, an Electrical Engineer with degrees from CCNY, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn & New York University. He has applied his technology expertise to Web-based Genealogical Search Tools. The schedule: the speaker/program begins at 1:00 PM followed by social time at 2:30 PM. The Computer Group begins at 3:00 PM. Sonny and Perley Return The always-popular local musical duo of Sonny and Perley return for a Stedman Room concert on Sunday afternoon, October 26, at 2:00 PM. Sonny and Perley have 21 themed concerts; on the 26th they will be performing “Brazilian Romance: The Bossa Nova Phenomenon.” From Sonny and Perley’s website: “The world discovered Bossa Nova in 1963 with the huge success of master composer Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Girl from Ipanema. American Jazz and popular music were both inspired with this ‘new wave.’ Albums were recorded by legendary artists including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz and Sergio Mendez, and Brazil 66. To this day, Jobim’s music and the Bossa Nova continue as a major force and inspiration for artists such as Diana Krall, Natalie Cole and countless others. Sonny & Perley capture the essence of the sultry romance and mesmerizing rhythm of Bossa Nova. Perley effectively draws the audience in with fascinating narration and both English and Portuguese interpretations of lyrics. Hugely entertaining, enthusiastically received, educational and uplifting!”
