YOUTH SPORTS AND ATHLETICS It has been a wonderful opportunity to be able to partner with the Colonie Raiders football teams for this edition. Youth sports teams are a critical part of the fabric of our community. Working with the Colonie Jr Raiders brought me back to a time when I was involved in organizing and coaching Little League. Over the course of 3 years, I wore three hats. Little League VP, Major League Baseball Coach and Softball Coach. It was a crazy time with those responsibilities along with household duties and holding down a full time job at General Electric Plastics. As VP of the Little League, I wanted the quality of the coaching to be the best, so I purchased two books for all of the coaches. One was a book on how to run practices, complete with techniques and drills, and the other was called Life’s Lessons From Little League, written by Dr. Vincent Fortanasce who is a nationally acclaimed neurologist, psychiatrist, bioethicist, Little League Hall of Famer, Former Olympic Athlete and a Little League coach for twelve years, and is also a devoted father of three. From the Publisher.... Officially endorsed by the Little League Association, with a foreword from Orel Hershiser, Life Lessons From Little League --is an all-star guide for Little Leaque parents and coaches who want to teach their children to become not only good players, but also good sports. In short, it’s a great book to help everyone, coaches and parents alike, to “keep it all in perspective.” While coaching my son and his teammates during the season, I had some pretty fundamental goals: • Learn to be a team player • Learn the Game • Do the best you can and the one that got me in the most trouble with
the parents.... • Everyone on my team plays the same amount of time. I had a software program that I used to keep track of everyones stats and innings played, and we all played the same amount. My biggest challange came from the peanut gallery when the “Star Player” had his turn on the bench for 3 innings. Luckly I was smart enough to have my own son sit out the same 3 innings at the start of the game. To the constant yelling from the stands asking “what are your doing?” I calmly turned and reminded the parents that everyone plays the same as I explained to everyone at the beginning of the season. I said I would be happy to talk about it after the game, at which time I took out my stats. I had the data to back up the benching. What did my goals and controversial policy of everyone plays the same produce? • Our Team came in second place out of 6 teams who, by the way, used the other policy of.. if your not that good you get 1 at bat and 3 outs each game for your playing time. • One of the less talented players, got a hit in a crutial game and drove in the winning run. He and his Dad, when we ocassionally each other, over 30 years later, still talk about the great season he had. Isn’t that what Little League and youth sports are supposed to be about? Learning to be on a team that appreciates everyones efforts and do your best. Sounds like a good Life Lesson for all of us. Kevin Hotaling Owner and Publisher, Our Towne Colonie

TOWN TIMES
with PAULA MAHAN
SUPERVISOR, TOWN OF COLONIE John Cole, Owner of Cole’s Collision, is joined by his wife Regina, Supervisor Paula Mahan and Colonie Chamber President Tom Nolte at the opening of the new location
New State-of-the-Art Center Keeps Cole’s Collision on Course
When you first meet John Cole, Owner of Cole’s Collision Centers, the first thing you notice is the sharp focus in his eyes. One gets the impression that Cole accomplishes his goals with the commitment and determination required to succeed as a business owner. So it is no surprise that when the conversation turns to the new state-of the-art Cole’s Collision Center at 1517 Central Avenue, those same eyes light up with excitement. The new building has three paint booths, including custombuilt, double cabin imported from Italy, and two dedicated fixtures frame machines. Cole started working on opening his first Collision Center in 2006. With the help of his father and biggest supporter, Dave, and some other close supporters, he renovated the building located at 1904 Central Avenue and turned it into a state-of-the-art collision center facility. His previous experience managing a high volume collision center at a local dealership gave him the confidence to get his collision center up and running, eventually becoming the success it is today. After purchasing the necessary equipment and hiring some key employees, Cole kicked his goals into high gear. Cole’s Collision Center of Colonie opened for business in January of 2007. Obtaining his first contracts with insurance companies paved the early road to success for Cole and his team. Business continued to grow steadily. However, as with any new business, there are inevitably professional and personal challenges along the way. Unfortunately, as Cole’s professional career was developing nicely, his father was diagnosed with cancer and soon passed away. Cole honored him by working harder to make his business the success they envisioned as they renovated the building for the first location. Within two years, Cole’s Collision Center of Colonie was a huge competitor in the Capital District collision industry. Not one to rest on his laurels, Cole knew his work was not yet done. In May of 2007, Cole’s Collision Center’s acquired the two Spa Body Works LTD locations in Ballston Spa and Wilton. His experience in the industry gave him the confidence to turn the two shops into highvolume competitors in the collision center industry. Within the first year of ownership, Cole rearranged the staff and hired qualified technicians and signed DRP contracts with insurance companies looking to work with growing shops. Cole further expanded his horizons when he opened the Clifton Park center in 2012. With a commitment to quality service, Cole looks to p rovide the safest repairs to what he calls his “community of customers” at every location. He is proud to stand by all five of his I-Car Glass Certified shops and hopes to grow in every aspect of the collision center industry. His employees are all “A” techs, and I-Car Platinum certified. Cole is continuously improving his processes at his locations, and makes customer satisfaction a number one priority. The look in his eyes tells you that it will be business as usual at the newest Cole’s Collision Center.
Our infrastructure is fundamental to every aspect of living and doing business in Colonie. That’s why in 2014 we began long-term strategic efforts to strengthen the Town’s drinking water and sanitary sewer systems. At 56-square miles, Colonie covers a lot of ground. Imagine the infrastructure needed to speed 3.8 billion gallons of drinking water to 23,500 service connections each year. (What’s needed is one water treatment plant, five pump stations, 15 huge water storage tanks, and 428 miles of water main.) The Town also maintains 400 miles of pipe, 29 pump stations, and 9,000 manholes to treat 3.5 million gallons of sanitary wastewater every day at its Mohawk View Pollution Control Plant. This year, the Latham Water District began a $1.3 million project to upgrade the Mohawk View High Lift Station. In service since 1964, it pumps about 60 percent of the Town’s drinking water. Next will be a complete overhaul of the River Road Pump station, in service since 1978. In addition to the $1.85 million rehabilitation of two water tanks (on Miller and Osborne Roads), $1 million is being invested to strengthen security throughout the entire water system. And the task of replacing thousands of feet of castiron water main is ongoing. Last year, new screenings and grit equipment was installed at the Town’s Pollution Control Plant, a $3.3 million project to replace equipment in use since 1978. (The screenings and grit processes are the essential first two steps in wastewater treatment.) Also last year, the Pure Waters Division invested $300,000 to totally rehabilitate its Fonda Road Pumping Station and $500,000 to replace the emergency notification systems at all 29 pumping stations. A $5.2 million project is underway to overhaul the Lisha Kill Pumping Station, one of the system’s largest and oldest. Finally, Pure Waters this summer undertook a $700,000 comprehensive rehab of the sewer systems on Metro Park Road, Aviation Road, and Computer Park Drive East. In addition, we concluded our first $5 million paving and drainage improvement plan in 2014, and this year began a second five-year, $5 million paving plan to continue our progress in returning all our Town roads to top working condition. Having achieved financial stability for Colonie, I am excited to be able to make major reinvestments in our infrastructure. This is not only the key to our quality of life today, but the key to our success in the future.

HALLOWEEN FACTS FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT THE COSTUMER
Halloween is one of the world’s oldest holidays. In Ireland and Canada, Halloween, which was once a frightening and superstitious time of year, is celebrated much as it is in the United States, with trick-or-treating, costume parties, and fun for all ages. Halloween Masquerade Mask: From earliest times people wore masks when droughts or other disasters struck. They believed that the demons who had brought their misfortune upon them would become frightened off by the hideous masks. Even after the festival of Samhain had merged with Halloween, Europeans felt uneasy at this time of the year. Food was stored in preparation for the winter and the house was snug and warm. The cold, envious ghosts were outside, and people who went out after dark often wore masks to keep from being recognized.
Halloween has become second only to Christmas as the biggest decorating holiday of the year, and Kathe Sheehan, who owns The Costumer in Schenectady, will tell you that baby boomers have embraced the holiday’s decoration and masquerade. Money spent on Halloween is double digit billions. This year The Costumer celebrates its 98th year, but in 1974, when Sheehan and her late husband Jack, purchased The Costumer neither the business nor the holiday compared to what they have become today. The costumer has developed into a major theatrical supplier and as Halloween has become one of the year’s most celebrated holidays, it has become an important and fun time of year for them.
The reason for Halloween’s rising popularity? Staff at The Costumer have a variety of theories ranging from the freedom from inhibitions the masks provide, to the role playing costumes allow. It is a break from the Doom and Gloom. People are very able to separate the make-believe spookiness of Halloween from the horrors of real life. People look forward to the holiday as a diversion. It is important to children as it entices them to use their imagination. Most people can recall just how they looked and felt in their favorite Halloween costume. Sheehan’s theory is much simpler- “What other holiday lets you spend so much money on yourself.”

What’s in Your Closet? ARE THERE ELEPHANTS IN YOUR CLOSET?
My daughter collects elephants and elephant imagery. She even has a small elephant tattoo at the juncture of her thumb and index finger of one hand. I have no idea why. The canvas basket in which she stores her newborn’s onesies has an appliquéd elephant on it. Is this the result of her parents’ predilection for incessant reading and re-reading of the tales of Babar to ease the transitions into a long night of sleep or the frequent viewing of the vintage Disney biopic Dumbo with the flights of fancy of the enormous-eared elephant protagonist? I have no clue. Our local scrapyard hero, Adam Weitsman, recently paid $166,750.00 for a four gallon West Troy stoneware crock decorated with a large cobalt prancing elephant (Weitsman regularly donates his spectacular stoneware to the New York State Museum). Times are tough, however, for real life elephants. Their numbers are dwindling as the harvesting of ivory tusks continues to be a lucrative business. As the United States and the world have begun to regulate the trade and transport of elephant ivory the impact on the antiques business has been enormous. The marketing of ivory jewelry, netsukes, carved chess sets, firearms with inlaid stocks and grips, etc. has essentially become an illegal activity, no matter how many years ago it was manufactured. The tangle of State and Federal laws (Dept. of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services Endangered Species Act) as they entwine with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna has become impenetrable. The intersection of layers of regulation-speak makes the reading of the U.S. tax code seem like breezing through the straightforward order of Margaret Brown’s book Goodnight Moon. Last year China, as a statement of their dedication to cracking down on the illegal trade in ivory, publicly fed six tons of ivory into crushing machines. I’m not sure how that helped the situation other than decreasing the supply and not addressing the demand. I’m not advocating for the slaughter of elephants. I would just like to see laws enacted that would allow for the sale of ivory items that were made in the 19th c. or 18th c. or in some cases even earlier. With the speed of the proverbial tortoise regulators are trying to fashion exemptions that would allow the Itzhak Perlmans of the worlds to transport their ivory-ornamented Stradivarius violins across oceans, cane collectors to trade their ivory-handled walking sticks, museum to deaccession their 1820’s miniature portraits on ivory. At the moment, though, it seems if you have any elephants in your closet you need to keep them there. It is not illegal for you visit with them regularly, just don’t try selling any of them off to someone in Kansas and definitely not to someone in China.

Central Florist Lands Exclusive “Speaking” Engagement For Susan and Michelle Perry, Central Florist is more than just a business. It is the family business. As the new generation, they fully embrace the challenges and responsibilities that come with running what has been a family-owned business for 73 years. Proudly serving the Capital District since 1942, Central Florist is a full-service, family-owned and operated florist that delivers throughout the Capital District. Located on lower Central Avenue, the flower shop has served as a valuable member of the business community since opening its doors. The owners take pride in their unique designs, as well as the fact that they use fresh flowers daily. Their commitment to fulfilling any order, even if given short notice makes their customers feel like extended members of the family. As the local competition, including major supermarkets, intensifies, Central Florist has gained an exclusive license with “Speaking Roses”, becoming the only flower shop in New York that features the “Speaking Roses” unique personalized floral expressions. From “Thank You(s), Condolences, Weddings, Proms and special occasions, to personalized gifts, advertising and branding, “Speaking Roses” brings the flower and greeting card industries to flower arrangements, allowing customers the opportunity to create and convey unforgettable messages by inscribing them on the petal of the rose(s). The “Speaking Roses” tagline of “What’s your message?” helps make any day a special occasion for special words to friends and family. For Sue and Michelle, it all starts and ends with family. “My father, Fred, started the business in 1942 at the time when men ran flower shops. My mother, Shirley, came to work for him and that is when our family history of Central Florist began,” says Sue. “When my father died, my mom and Sue ran the store together for about another 30 years together. Now that mom has passed, my sister Michelle and I have started a new era for our family-owned flower shop.” A “new era” for Central Florist means bringing the store into the 21st century with a website for customers to place orders online. “We had to learn to make the website mobilefriendly for the generation that lives on their smartphones,” Michelle continues. Central Florist has increased its online and social media presence via Twitter, Instagram and Pintrest, making the business more accessible to all generations. Lastly, Sue says with a touch of irony, “Of course we still answer the phones personally to take care of our customers who still like the phone and personal conversation. If customers call to inquire about “Speaking Roses”, it’s probably a good idea for us to be available to speak with them.”

Our Colonie Raiders Special Section Pages 20-29
In 2013, the Junior Raiders program was set in motion, with a vision to change the culture of football and provide all kids an opportunity to play. In the three years to follow, the vision has widened, the roots have grown, and more Colonie athletes are playing football at the youth level than ever before. With the strong commitment of youth and high school coaches, parents and players, we are proud to say that we have progressed into the second largest youth football program in all of Section II. The South Colonie football family is bigger and stronger than ever. Our vision continues to move forward as our young athletes enter the middle school with our 7th grade program and look to develop from
there and set their sights on one day becoming a varsity football player. The future of Colonie football looks bright as we stand strongly united. Good luck to everyone this year. Go Raiders!!! Coach Rouleau, Head Varsity Football Coach

about her cookbook-memoir Clean Comfort: An Adventure in Food, Courage, and Healing…Finding Peace, Balance, and My Perfect Weight on Tuesday October 13th at 7:00 PM. Six years ago Morris, who was raised in Lake George, began a journey of what she describes as ‘extreme self-discovery,’ which involved total honesty and self- inquiry into why she was using food as a drug and how she reached a high weight of 345 pounds. She went on to drop 180 pounds without formal dieting while still maintaining her status as food-lover. Noon Author Talk II: Paul Grondahl Our second Noon Author Talk for the month welcomes Times Union writer Paul Grondahl on Thursday, October 22. Paul will be here to talk about the TU-published and multi-authored book Great Dogs of Albany and Beyond. After Paul wrote a column a few years ago about the death of his family’s beloved 14-yearold black Labrador retriever Daisy, he wrote in a follow up: “I have written more than 7,000 articles for the Times Union over the past 30 years, some 6 million words, and nothing in my experience had drawn that kind of response from readers.” The result of the readers’ responses is the new book Great Dogs of Albany and Beyond; a book, wrote Paul, that “is a celebration of all the ways that great dogs enrich our lives.” More about the book from the TU: “The Times Union’s most honored writer and dozens of dog lovers from across the Capital Region take you inside their dog-centric households. In stories both touching and humorous, they reveal the deep bonds that link humans and their four-pawed friends throughout our community. Profits from book sales benefit the Times Union Hope Fund. Enjoy the book, then see much more, including photography and video, and join the ongoing conversation at: http://timesunion.com/greatdogs” The talk begins at 12:15 PM; bring your lunch if you are on lunch hour.
