What’s in Your Closet? I’ve just returned from exhibiting my wares at a wonderful Antiquarian Book Fair which is held every July at Searles Castle in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. This spectacular French-Château Style Manor house has seven floors, thirty-six fireplaces, 55,000 square feet of floor space and is built on 60+ manicured acres with ponds and gardens and 1000 feet of water frontage on the Housatonic. It was built in 1888 by the architect Edward Searles who married the millionaire widow of Mark Hopkins, railroad magnate. The building currently houses the John Dewey School, an exclusive private school for troubled teens. The property has been on the market for the last eight years, with an initial $15 million price tag. I believe you could be the new owner if your piggy bank held one half that amount. So what’s a book fair and why would anyone want to go out of their way to visit one? On almost any weekend somewhere in the country, a small group of independent sellers of rare books rent space in a venue and stock their stalls with a variety of items which are for sale. The public is invited to attend for a nominal admission fee. Booths might be filled with travel posters or 18th-century maps, books on military history or manuscript letters by literary luminaries, 19th century photographs or 20th century literary first editions; the gamut is enormous. In an intimate setting, visitors can handle historical or literary treasures and talk directly to the people who are passionate and knowledgeable about what they have for sale. Walking through the rooms of a mansion like Searles Castle you could peruse a letter by Andrew Carnegie or a first edition of To Kill a Mockingbird, stumble on a stack of art journals published in Woodstock during the 1920s, find a ticket to a voyage on the Titanic, or wire service photographs of Teddy Roosevelt making whistle stops during his 1912 presidential campaign. For 38 years the Albany Institute of History and Art has hosted an event of this nature, usually the third weekend in October. Thirty+ booksellers will fill every nook and cranny of the Rice Building of the Institute with a similar array of goods for the casually inquisitive to the inveterately acquisitive. There’s still something to be said for the feel and smell of the stuff and for the ability to look the merchant in the eye as you become the new owner of whatever item speaks to you. It is an experience that eclipses the ease of an Amazon or eBay digital purchase.

August: the last hurrah of summer August. The last chance for everyone in our area to squeeze some summer vacation time in. Yet, many of us fore-go our vacation time and continue to work our jobs because of the demands that are placed on us, or even worse, demands we place upon ourselves. Some of us have even lost vacation days because the end of the year came and they vaporized at the stroke of midnight. We are just too important and have so much work to get done. We are all too aware here in America of our ranking of vacation and holiday time off as compared to our colleagues in the other 21 richest industrialized countries in the world.

employees feel in reflecting back, I sure wouldn’t spend my vacation time again with my buddy the laptop. Heck, I don’t even know what I was working on but I’m sure it was very important at the time. An older, wiser me would have spent the time having a pillow fight and squishing my toes in the sand with my kids the next morning. I’m sure that if for some tragic reason we did not show up at our desks on a Monday morning, the companies we support would still be in business and find a way to carry on without us, in spite of what we believe. So go away, or stay home, either choice is fine as long as you take and use your vacation time without your buddy the work laptop. Being so connected to work via a cell phone and laptop is akin to that insidious TV of before. It will slowly suck the life out of you without you even knowing it. YOU, the person, should not be defined as the company you work for or the work that you do. If you’re still not sure who YOU ARE, use some of that downtime to reflect on it and try to figure it out. You might just be wondering “so why am I working so hard in a career that doesn’t fulfill me?” You and I are not as important to the success of the company as we think we are. So get out there this month and have some laughs with your family and friends. Squish your toes in the sand and have that pillow fight. Take your vacation, that’s important.

Source: No Vacation Nation-Revisited Rebecca Ray,Milla Sanes, and John Schmitt May 2013

Sad to say I’ve put myself in the position of being so important that I had to bring my laptop on vacation to do work for the company. Back then, I was a manager at GE Plastics and worked with my vacationing laptop about 20 hours throughout that vacation week. Yes it was during the evening for the most part when the family was being entertained by the insidious television, but none the less, that laptop pulled me away from them. The world changes. There is no such thing as GE Plastics anymore and as many ex-important

The Buying Process: Purchasing a home can be a very exciting and stressful time. There are so many things to consider and do before starting the process. Here are a few helpful hints two help make the buying process a little easier. First: Go and speak with a mortgage lender or broker. They will help you to determine what price will fit your budget and whether you will be approved for a mortgage. Second: Once approval is obtained through a mortgage professional, contact a Real Estate Salesperson. They will help you through the process and be able to make your search more enjoyable. Third: Put together a list of things that are important to you in a home. That will help your salesperson know what to search for when finding that perfect home. Fourth: After you receive emails from your agent of specific houses, do drive by’s to look at the home and see if it may fit your desires. Fifth: Tell your agent what properties you have

decided that you want to see and they will make appointments for you to view. Sixth: Take your time. There are plenty of houses to look at but if you absolutely love even the first house you see and it has everything you want and need, don’t hesitate. Seventh: Enjoy this exciting time. It is one of the largest investments that you will ever make so be sure that the home fits your needs and expectations. Next month: The selling process.

Basic Fruit Fly Facts

The fruit fly is a species of the common housefly known as Drosophila melanogaster (try saying that three times fast!) and is distinguished by its red eyes (dark-colored in some species) tan thorax and black abdomen. They get their name because of their strong attraction to ripening or rotting fruit, which serves as a food source as well as a place to lay their eggs. Adult fruit flies typically reach 3-4 mm in length and live 40 to 50 days. While fruit flies are most active during the fall harvest, they can be pests inside a home throughout the year. As you might imagine, fruit flies are also steady (although non-paying) customers in grocery store produce sections, and they love to hover around dumpsters, garbage cans or anywhere else they can scrounge a free, fruity meal. All About Fruit Fly Reproduction Fruit flies exhibit the typical four-stage insect reproductive of egg-larvae-pupae-adult. The larvae begin feeding on decaying fruit immediately upon hatching. It takes about one to two weeks to complete the entire metamorphosis. What makes fruit flies so difficult to control is that one female fruit fly can lay as many as 500 eggs in her short lifespan. Fruit Fly Habitat A common fruit fly habitat includes homes, grocery stores, restaurants and anywhere else that food may be rotting and fermenting. Most noticeable summer through fall, fruit flies can be a nuisance year round. As the name implies, fruit flies are attracted to fruits, as well as vegetables, sitting out on store shelves, in bowls in kitchens, and ripening in the garden. They also breed in drains, garbage disposals, trash containers, empty beer and soda bottles or cans, and soppy mops and buckets. Fruit flies only need fermenting fruit or a moist film of organic material to breed and thrive. Other Interesting Fruit Fly Facts You Might Not Know A fruit fly fact that might surprise you is that these little buggers are quite fond of beer and wine! It’s not that they crave alcohol – you probably won’t see a fruit fly at an AA meeting anytime soon – they’re just drawn to any type of fermenting food source. Fruit flies are also a valuable asset to scientists performing genetic research, since fruit flies and humans share 75% of those genes which cause disease. Their short lifespan is also amenable to examining changes

11

and mutations that can occur between birth and death. There are many ways fruit flies can break into your home. From hitching a ride on the local produce you picked up from the market, to simply finding cracks or improper seals in and around your windows or doors. It can be nearly impossible to deter fruit flies forever, because fruit flies can travel up to six miles a day, and detect strong odors from over 40 kilometers (or just under 25 miles) away! How To Control Fruit Flies Fruit flies are a common problem for many homeowners and are often seen swarming around kitchen fruit bowls and near garbage storage areas. How do you trap fruit flies? TERRO® Fruit Fly Traps to capture and kill these annoying insects. The traps use a non-toxic, foodbased liquid to lure fruit flies inside the apple-shaped trap. Once they enter the trap, they cannot escape to continue breeding. TERRO® Fruit Fly Traps last up to 30 days, but within a few days of placing the traps, your fruit fly problems will be a thing of the past. Fruit fly sources - The goal is to eliminate potential breeding grounds, such as trash cans, food left out, drinks spilled and damp areas where food has been stored, like pantries. Disposal - The first step to getting these pests out of your home is to throw away or refrigerate overly ripened fruits and vegetables. You’ll then want to empty trash cans and clean them of any spilled drink remnants or food particles. Clean up - Spilled drinks and food residue can continue to draw in more flies, so it’s important to wipe down and clean surfaces with which food comes in contact, from the kitchen to the living room. Anywhere you eat is a place they can too! Unwelcome return - Diligence is required when using a homemade solution, because eliminating their food source isn’t always entirely effective. Fruit flies can continue to breed in soiled mops, dirty drains and used drink containers long after traditional areas have been removed.

TOWN TIMES

SUPERVISOR, TOWN OF COLONIE

The Town of Colonie is fortunate in having a very vibrant and active senior community. With seniors making up more than 20 percent of our population, it’s essential that we have housing options for seniors at every income level. As Supervisor, I often hear from residents about the need for affordable senior housing, and I’m happy to be able to report on several projects designed to provide such housing in Colonie. In July, the Planning Board granted concept approval for a new 100-apartment complex at 11 Elks Lane. This Colonie Senior Service Center project, to be built on land currently owned by the Colonie Elks, is designed to accommodate seniors living primarily on Social Security. It includes one-bedroom apartments projected to rent at $850 and two-bedroom apartments at $1,100.

Another project has been proposed to redevelop the former Little Sisters of the Poor residences on Jeanne Jugan Lane into 121 apartments meeting federal guidelines for low-income housing. This project could breathe new life into a property that for many years provided welcoming and affordable housing options for our seniors. Also in July, the Planning Board reviewed the sketch plan for 110 units of senior housing at 33-45 Forts Ferry Road, an undeveloped parcel across from the Capital Region Health Park. These units would be designed for seniors in the middle-income range. If approved, construction could begin next year. The Town is also working with County Executive Dan McCoy to bring a residential component of the Solider On veterans program to Colonie. Through this project, the former Ann Lee Home, vacant for many years, would be redeveloped into a veterans residence. While the many new commercial and retail businesses coming to the Town of Colonie often make the news, everyone should know that there is also some very good news about the future of affordable senior housing in Colonie. In addition, one of our top agenda items is to continue working with the development community to find more ways to attract high-quality senior housing to Colonie.

WHO SAVES WHO? I believe it’s true in any profession that if you are passionate about what you do, it truly isn’t work, it feels like a mission. I’ve been truly blessed for the last 27 years to work in the pet care industry. I feel my biggest strength along with my biggest reward is the fact that every day I wake up and I participate in a part of my life...,,not a job. In the gratitude of being able to make a living doing what you truly love to do, it seems only natural to feel as if you want to “paw it forward”. In business I’ve done this by teaching, guiding, mentoring and giving anyone who loves the industry as much as I do a “leg up”. Philanthropically is where I believe the biggest reward lies for all. Profits from my business, along with volunteered time from myself, my board and my team have gone to found a non-for profit for less fortunate animals. With my community’s support, in five short years, our grassroots effort has made a difference in over 600 animals lives. We have also understood the needs of people who have fallen on hard times and needed

help with their animals. In my opinion, businesses who use this model in the community excel on multiple levels. The most important being the personal reward. • Restaurants that take proceeds to feed the poor, • Hair salons that take proceeds to help children, The list goes on of colleagues who I roundtable with who portray this same feeling as this commentary..... As bad as society can be portrayed... As hard as life can be with all our struggles... We all can do a small part to save each other and there is no better reward than this belief.

Love Yourself Into Wholeness

Are you harder on yourself than anyone else? Having a hard time in relationships? Wondering how to create healthier boundaries? Worried about others judging you? Can’t say you love yourself? All of these issues arise from judgment, shame, guilt, and fear and you can release these emotions, these destructive patterns, and return to your natural state of wholeness and love. YES, that is your natural state! Everyone is born loving themself in a healthy way. Throughout your life, you become a collection of things you have experienced: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Whether you were taught (through words or actions) that you were less important, unlovable, or made to feel wrong for trying to care for your own needs, these events created an impression - you stored them away and believed them. But it never felt good, never empowered you, and being your “own worst critic” isn’t the solution! It only brings you further away from that natural loving state. What if you could release those misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and opinions that left you feeling inadequate, unlovable, or just plain wrong? What if you could be free to love yourself and know that being kind to yourself is the only logical response to any situation? Join Shannon Keyes Ciucevich and Brenda Cary Jenks at Key 2 Joy in Colonie NY on Saturday, August 15 from 1 – 4 PM. for Love Yourself Into Wholeness. This workshop will truly change your life! Love is the most healing energy that exists and self-love is the basis of all love! Loving yourself can impact all areas of life: health (physical, emotional, and mental), finances, career, spiritual and personal growth, and relationships. Learn how to connect with your inner child, heal your ego, and release judgment, guilt, and shame. What are you waiting for? Call Key 2 Joy today at 518-598-6968 to preregister. Say H.E.L.L.O. to a New School Year!

Whether we want to admit it or not, school is just around the corner! It is an exciting time for children and parents…especially parents! The anticipation and anxiety of the first day… Starting a new grade, meeting new students and teachers, reconnecting with friends and sharing summer stories are all part of the experience of getting back to school. Yet the focus is the importance of education. Students are “punching the clock” on a daily basis as they prepare for their futures. From the elementary school to college, every day is a commitment to learning how to become independent-thinking adults who contribute both to the workforce and society as a whole. In the meantime and throughout their growth and development, they rely on those of us who have “been there, done that”. A few months ago, I was invited to join a group of professionals who believe in helping today’s students reach their full potential. We all remember our first days back to school (which for some of us is longer ago than we may care to remember. But I digress... The H.E.L.L.O. Albany Group is one of the first referral groups in Albany with a mission of helping others. H.E.L.L.O. stands for Helping to Enrich the Lives and Legacies of Others. Our mission is to grow our businesses through strong relationships while also focusing on those in need throughout our local communities. We are a non-traditional referral group of diverse and giving professionals committed to creating happy, healthy, and prosperous futures for ourselves and others. In the best interest of giving a nonprofit adequate assistance, we only work with one nonprofit per year.

19

This year, we are partnering with the Hope 7 Community Center in Troy founded in 1968 under the leadership of dedicated individuals who saw a need for recreational programs for Troy’s East Side youth. The mission is to “provide life-essential and enhancing services in a nurturing and non-preferential manner, to promote self-sufficiency, personal growth, and commitment to serving one’s community.” Thus far in 2015, we have assisted in gathering donations such as food pantry items and gentlyused computer equipment for their after-school program. The After-School Program that the Hope 7 Community Center offers is a vital part of the education for children in grades K-7 in the Troy community. The program has a healthy balance of snack time, supervised homework sessions, arts & crafts, and physical recreation. The H.E.L.L.O. Group realizes how important back to school items can be to Hope 7 Community Center. As Hope 7 prepares for school to start up this fall, the H.E.L.L.O. Albany Group will be hosting a “Back to School” Barbeque on August 30th, from 12pm-4pm at River Road Park in Niskayuna. Bring your appetite and new school supplies donations to an afternoon of food, family and fun… And great raffle prizes! It is great to be part of the H.E.L.L.O. Albany Group… Sometimes the receiving is in the giving! Happy School Year!!!

What Makes a Good Life? Saturday August 1st starting at 3:00 PM: Everybody wants a good life – a healthy life and a life filled with meaning. Don’t miss the chance to hear British author Neville Hodgkinson as he shares the exciting discoveries of his 40 year search for “A Good Life”. This question “What makes a good life?” is at the heart of his most recent book, I Know How To Live, I Know How To Die. It is based on the spiritual teachings of Dadi Janki who, at 100 years, is one of the world’s greatest yogis and spiritual head of the Indiabased Brahma Kumaris Organization. Neville Hodgkinson will be interviewed by Judy Rodgers, a founding partner of Images and Voices of Hope, a global media dialogue initiative committed to the role of media as agents of world benefit. We will welcome questions from the audience at the end. Presented by Peace Village Learning and Retreat Center. Library Photography Contest Exhibit and Reception The entries have been submitted, the judges have made their decisions and the top photographs will be displayed in the Stedman Room from August 3rd to the 29th. The awards in both Teen and Adult categories will be presented at the reception on Saturday, August 8th, at 1:00 PM. The public is invited to attend. American Cinema and WW II Film Series Concludes Our year-long American Cinema and World War II film series with Lenny Zapala – film expert and Director of the Menands Public Library – concludes this month on Tuesday August 11th at 6:30 PM with the multiple Academy Award winning (seven Oscars and two honorary Oscars!) all-time classic from 1946: The Best Years of Our Lives. From the original NY Times review on November 22, 1946: “It is seldom that there comes a motion picture which can be wholly and enthusiastically endorsed not only as superlative entertainment but as food for quiet and humanizing thought. Yet such a one opened at the Astor last evening. It is ‘The Best Years of Our Lives.’ Having to do with a subject of large moment – the veteran home from war – and cut, as it were, from the heart-wood of contemporary American life, this film … does a great deal more, even, than the above. It gives off a warm glow of affection for everyday, down-to-earth folks….For ‘The Best Years of Our Lives’ catches the drama of veterans returning home from war as no film – or play or novel that we’ve yet heard of – has managed to do. In telling the stories of three veterans who come back to the same home town -- one a middle-aged sergeant, one an air officer and one a sailor who has lost both hands – it fully reflects the delicate tensions, the deep anxieties and the gnawing despairs that surely have been experienced by most such

fellows who have been through the same routine. It visions the overflowing humors and the curious pathos of such returns, and it honestly and sensitively images the terrible loneliness of the man who has been hurt – hurt not only physically but in the recesses of his self-esteem.” We’d like to thank Lenny for his time and expertise – and his newsreels and shorts, too! Colonie Town Band Concert Summer rolls on with a concert Monday night August 17th at 7:00 PM by the Colonie Town band, which will featuring selections from Broadway shows, movies, marches and light classical pieces. The Colonie Town Band, organized in 1964, is a community band sponsored by the Town of Colonie Parks and Recreation Department. It is truly an intergenerational group made up of amateur musicians ranging from teenagers to octogenarians. Bring your lawn chairs (the library does not provide chairs for outdoor use) and join us on the plaza in front of the library. The concert will be held in the Stedman Room in the event of threatening weather. Chinese Film Series Finale & Discussion I-Hsin Wu, Adjunct Professor of Sociology at UAlbany, hosted a film/discussion series titled “Introducing Chinese Culture Through Chinese Films” over the past year. The series began last November and concluded on June 15th with the multi-award winning Taiwanese/Japanese film Yi Yi: A One and A Two. Previous film were: Raise the Red Lantern, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Joy Luck Club, Eat Drink Man Woman, Farewell My Concubine, The Flowers of War, and The Blue Kite. A general discussion of the films will be hosted by Professor Wu on Thursday night, August 20th starting at 6:00 PM for those who came to any or all of the films. Friends of the Library News The Friends have been very active this summer at the Book Nook on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Crossings. We have had many of our regular volunteers along with some new friends. We could not make the Book Nook function without their help. Please think about becoming a member of the Friends and helping to support the library we love. This summer has also seen the return of the Teen Volunteers. Their help is invaluable and their enthusiasm is infectious. We want to give a special “Thank You” to all of them. As always, all hardcover books are $1, paperbacks are $.50, and children’s books are also $.50. Remember the Friends meet the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the Youth Activity Room. Our August meeting will be on the 11th. All are welcome! Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook.
