But...But... I’m Only One Person! You say you are only one person and what kind of difference can I make? Well the difference you can make is a call to action to do your best to shop local and small. We all see videos going viral on you-tube, how about being part of a viral movement in supporting small businesses? Yes your just one person, but...but... with the help of your other one person friends, and their friends and family circles, we could have a contagious epidemic of supporting small businesses in the capital region. Advocating that we should be eliminating large business in our local community is not what I’m saying, because having both is a reality in our world. I’m really not into that ostrich thing where I stick my head in the sand and pretend that it doesn’t exist because I can’t see it. We have to find a way to make both work. Right now, my general sense, is that the shopping Think globally, scales are tipped toward act locally. the larger businesses. - Rene Dubos All I’m advocating is a re-balancing, can we all try to get as close to 50/50 in purchasing efforts concerning the large corporation, small independent business split? Any true change in the world usually only happens through some sort of compromise. I’m not saying that working for big business is bad, I just would like some of your hard earned dollars to be redirected to the small businesses in your community whenever possible. This holiday season is when most small businesses finally after 10 long months, start gaining some financial breathing room.

Shaker Heritage Society Continues Tradition Did you know that the first Shaker community was established right here in Albany? The Shakers were a celibate, communal religious group that significantly influenced American history and culture. Today, Albany County owns the historic site. The non-profit Shaker Heritage Society is working with the County to revitalize the historic site while offering numerous educational programs. Shakers were well known for their strong work ethic and entrepreneurial innovation. They developed numerous successful hand made products for sale to the outside world including oval boxes, chairs and garden seeds. The annual Shaker Christmas Craft Fair builds upon this tradition and over the past twenty five years, it has become a popular annual event. Over seventy five local artisans participate in the Fair each year. A wide variety of products are offered including textiles, glass, pottery, jewelry, honey, hand crafted candy, spice mixes, and much more. Each year, the show features both new and veteran artisans who exhibit an astounding degree of creativity while reflecting Shaker traditions of craftsmanship. The Christmas Craft Fair is an important fundraiser for the Shaker Heritage Society, which recently completed major restoration of the 1915 barn. Last year the Society won two national awards for its educational resources was involved in the development of The Shakers: America’s Quiet Revolutionaries, an exhibition that is currently on view at the New York State Museum. Craft Fair customers support these efforts and local family-run businesses while discovering unique gifts. It’s a win, win, win opportunity!

FEATURED BUSINESS Community Resource Federal Credit Union Celebrates 80 years of ‘People Helping People’ In 1935, a new house cost $3,400 and a new car $625. Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Woody Allen were born. The Hoover Dam and Fort Knox were under construction and Franklin Roosevelt was president. It was also the year that Community Resource Federal Credit Union (CRFCU) first opened its doors. One year after the Federal Credit Union Act was enacted, CRFCU was established in downtown Albany as the New York Power and Light Service Building Employees FCU, serving the employees of Niagara Mohawk. On July 1, 1996 they moved to the current location at 20 Wade Rd., Latham and in 2000 applied for a community charter which enables them to offer membership to residents (and their immediate family members) who live, work, worship, attend school or is a member of an organization in Albany County. In the United States, credit unions are not-for-profit organizations that exist to serve their members rather than to maximize corporate profits. Like banks, credit unions accept deposits, make loans, and provide a wide array of other financial services. The difference between credit unions and some banks is that in a credit union, members deposit $5 in a savings account and then own a share of that credit union. There are no stockholders, so any earnings that are made go back into the credit union. That means higher savings rates and lower loan interest rates. Credit unions, such as Community Resource, have seen a rise in membership as big banks have come under scrutiny for their profit making measures.
Since CRFCU opened its doors in 1935, a lot has changed. Technology has allowed the services to expand far beyond deposits and loans, and enables convenience for many transactions to be done from the home or office. Community Resource offers Home Banking, Mobile Banking, Shared Banking, Mobile Check Deposit and access to thousands of surchargefree ATMs making it easy to do financial transactions at any time, from anywhere. Although technology and the way we bank has changed over the years, some things at Community Resource will never change, like their commitment to serving their members. The success at CRFCU is due to the talented and dedicated staff. For 80 years they’ve operated from the same core value of people helping people. Partnerships with organizations such as Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, Capital Roots and the Mohawk Hudson Human Society allow them to give back to the community and the members they serve. “Our continued growth remains as strong as our commitment to member loyalty and the community.” states Christine Somers, Marketing Specialist at Community Resource. “Members should feel good about where we have come from and where we are headed. They are the reason we’ve been able to help each other and stay in business for 80 years.” Today, the credit union has more than 6,700 members and maintains assets of $75 million.

KNOW YOUR ICE MELTER AND SHOVELS FACTS FOR THIS WINTER
11 shallow scoop is OK for pushing snow but spills when lifted. High scoop sides contain snow and can reduce flexing.
Ice Melter Facts – The name brand will vary between your local hardware stores but there will normally be a rock salt, calcium blend and calcium concentrate and an alternative ice melter product. Your local hardware store clerk can explain it in more detail if needed.
Look at the lineup below, and consider buying more than one shovel depending on anticipated need—one for lifting, another for pushing, for example, or one for dealing with regular snow and another for an icy plow pile at the end of your driveway.

Rock Salt - Works effectively to 20 degrees Economical for large applications. Corrosive to concrete over the long term. White residue left behind. Road Runner - Works effectively to minus 15 degrees Economical “chloride” product. Contains Calcium and Magnesium Chloride pellets. Generates melting heat when exposed to moisture (liquid or frozen). Safe on streets, driveways, sidewalks, and concrete steps. It is colorless and odorless when dissolved. Prestone Driveway Heat - Works effectively to minus 25 degrees Premium concentrated blend of primarily Calcium Chloride for faster action. It melts 4 times more ice than equal weight of Rock Salt. Safe on streets, driveways, sidewalks, and concrete steps and will not damage trees, shrubs or grass. Ice B Gone Magic - Works effectively to minus 30 degrees Starts out as ordinary rock salt, then is treated with a liquid, agricultural by-product of the distilling process blended with magnesium chloride. It does not refreeze because the brine stays fluid. It is safe for concrete, landscape and pet friendly and doesn’t track like other products. 90% less corrosive than salt and leaves no visible residue and is safe to handle.
DIFFERENCE IN SNOW SHOVELS The handle: “Ergonomic” may not mean easy. Bent handles can make the pushing angle hard to adjust, and twisting the shovel to toss snow aside can be difficult. A shorter handle makes snow-throwing easier; longer is better for pushing—you can better tweak the shovel’s angle and use your weight. A wood handle is handsome but heavy, metal is cold, and plastic or fiberglass is often just right. The grip: D-shaped. Be sure it fits your hands, especially if they’re unusually small or big. A padded grip is nice, as is an extra grip lower on the handle. The scoop: Look for sturdy scoop and is attached well to the handle. Metal is generally more rigid than plastic but heavier. Steel on the leading edge can extend a shovel’s life and make it more effective in hard-packed snow, though the edge may scratch a delicate surface such as decking. A scoop about 24 inches across is good for a few inches of light snow; narrower is better when snow is deep or wet and heavy. A deeply curved scoop can clear a lot of snow; a
1. Versatile. Throws, lifts, or pushes. Scoop sides keep snow from escaping. Fiber core handle is lighter than wood. 2. Garden-variety. Slices heavy snow and is good for other outdoor work, but the wood handle is heavy and short. 3. Cheap, plastic. Plastic may flex too much and wear over time. Without a steel edge, the scoop won’t bite well into icy snow. 4. He-man heft. It could actually be too big. You can use your foot to push it into a plow bank, but it takes a very heavy scoop. 5. Wide, wobbly. Quickly fills with snow, and the one we tried wobbled. OK for a little light fluff on a hard surface. 6. Ergonomic handle. The bend makes it hard to maintain an effective angle and awkward to throw to the side. You’ll need strong wrists. 7. Yellow midsize. An ergonomic handle that’s better than the dogleg version; and you’re not forced into one grip. 8. A pusher. The width and lack of sides mean it isn’t good for lifting snow. It will do for up to 4 or 5 inches of light snow. See your local hardware store for help with selecting shovels and ice melter. Phillips Hardware has over 30 different shovels that will meet all your snow removal needs this winter.

What’s in Your Closet?
I am constantly being reminded how television’s fiction impacts my daily reality. I am an ardent fan of a number of political dramas, especially House of Cards and Scandal. Both of these shows paint the inhabitants of Congress and the White House as manipulating, self-serving, back-stabbing (figuratively and literally) individuals. Decisions are rarely achieved by determining what is ultimately good for the constituency or the country, but rather what fosters the politician’s personal agenda (mostly to consolidate his or her individual power). So when I read about actual, everyday political decisions, be they trade agreements, pipeline construction or Speaker of the House appointment, I am increasingly cynical about motives. The fiction of television has grossly infiltrated my perspective on day to day life. As much as I am partial to political series, I find most antiques-related shows annoying. Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, Antiques Roadshow, etc. are in a “reality” format, but in reality they are as deceptive as a magician sawing a body in half. There are the blatant misrepresentations...as when a number of years ago a pair of appraisers were indicted on federal mail and wire fraud charges, accused of staging phony appraisals on the Roadshow to enhance their reputations as experts in Civil War-era weapons and military artifacts. But the bottom line - to make what the producer’s feel is watchable television- necessitates that the situations or items featured are scripted. Pawn Stars does not feature customers just randomly walking into a Las Vegas pawn shop. The items have already been researched and the people vetted and prepped for the show. Roadshow participants and “finds” are carefully selected from an enormous flood of people toting their cherished items hoping that they have the Hope diamond in the rough. This all makes for good television and the ratings reflect that. Given what I do for a living, I do wish more people were cognizant of the impact this somewhat fictive TV world has on their day to day reality. The majority of “stuff” in the world does not have much market value. Similarly, I guess that means I should realize that the majority of politicians are not corrupt, or is that just faulty logic?

The new ice rink will be installed at the front of the Golf Course parking lot, providing easy access to parking and the clubhouse, where the Pro Shop will be open daily for those who need to warm up. Clubhouse restrooms will also be open daily from 9:00 a.m. until dusk. In addition, the Golf Course restaurant Martel’s is now open for lunch and dinner year-round, so skaters and skiers will be able to order up hot chocolate or hot food Tuesdays through Sundays. Since becoming the concessionaire last year, Martel’s has greatly improved the restaurant, completely redesigning and updating it and adding new menus, a new bar, and large screen TVs. Last summer Martel’s opened a beautiful new outdoor terrace overlooking the driving range, which proved to be a very popular spot for patrons and guests. Next year, we plan to construct a new 40’ x 80’ pavilion at the Golf Course that can accommodate up to 250 people. The pavilion will greatly increase our ability to host golf outings at the Golf Course, thus increasing revenue and strengthening our bottom line. I am really very excited that improvements at the golf course have greatly increased its desirability as a venue. I would also like to note the popularity this summer of the PGA-sponsored golf programs for junior golfers, which attracted more than 50 young people for every session. Finally, congratulations to PGA Head Professional/ General Manager Noel Gebauer on his recent election to the PGA America Board of Directors. What a great honor for Colonie and our Town Golf Course!

COMMUNITY RESOURCE FEDERAL CREDIT UNION THANKS LOCAL VETERANS WITH A ‘RETURN THE FAVOR’ DISCOUNT
The well-being of Capital District Veterans has always been a priority for Community Resource Federal Credit Union (CRFCU). In an effort to acknowledge the sacrifices of military personnel who have given so much for home and country, CRFCU participates in the Return the FAVOR Veterans’ Discount Program. This program is a joint effort between the business community and county government to provide veterans with a discount to local goods and services for the service they have provided. Participating county merchants have agreed to honor the card by providing Veterans with a discount on purchases and services, or some other special offer. Discounts include: financial services, restaurants, hotels, automotive, barber and salon, professional and retail services. Under this exciting program, honorably discharged Veterans receive a picture I.D. card from their County Clerk to present to merchants who participate in the program. Military active duty ID cards and retiree ID cards will also be honored. Businesses may offer any discount that they would like and a colorful window decal is provided to each business upon enrollment.
For the month of November, Community Resource Federal Credit Union will offer an additional .25% Annual Percentage Rate off a Consumer/Personal Loan or an additional .25% Annual Percentage Yield increase on a Share Certificate to local veterans and military personnel. For more information, details and restrictions call 783-2211 or visit communityresource. coop
For more information about your county FAVOR discount program, contact your local County Clerk. A list of participating merchants, businesses and their special offer or discount for card holders can be found on your local county website.

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter ‘c’ would be dropped to be replased either by ‘k’ or ‘s’, and likewise ‘x’ would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which ‘c’ would be retained would be the ‘ch’ formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform ‘w’ spelling, so that ‘which’ and ‘one’ would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish ‘y’ replasing it with ‘i’ and Iear 4 might fiks the ‘g/j’ anomali wonse and for all.
