What’s in Your Closet? It is not easy to avoid commentary, research or ads targeting specific generations. Millennials seem to be the current force to be “reckoned with”. This 80 million strong group of sixteen to thirty year olds apparently drives businesses, politicians and cultural institutions. This social media-savvy force is often credited with helping Obama win the Presidency, altering the landscape for car rentals and hotel stays, and fine tuning the sudden collective reaction to political issues or events. They are the force spawning Yotel, Uber and flash mobs. And it is the Millennials, and to some extent the Gen X’s, who have altered the collecting of antiques and home furnishings. Almost on a daily basis people offer me their grandmother’s set of Limoges china, their aunt’s Revere-style silver bowl, or their own cabinet full of white wine, red wine, champagne and cordial size crystal stemware. And on almost a daily basis I offer my apologies for a marketplace that has minimal enthusiasm for these once treasured items. The trend continues to move away from formal dining rooms, expansive foyers, libraries and sitting rooms. There is rarely a need for sideboards, china cabinets, grandfather’s clocks or ornately carved mirrored hall racks. Millennials have no desire to have fine china that won’t survive the dishwasher, or sterling flatware services that need regular polishing. There is no need to have the elegant frills of formality - no toast racks, no asparagus tongs, no lemon forks, no bonbon spoons. There is no need for cut crystal celery dishes, single handled nappies, oyster plates or covered sardine dishes. I have Millennial age children. One in particular embodies all the traits to an extreme. His set of luggage is comprised of two backpacks (varying sizes, of course); drinking glasses are mason jars. Dressers have been supplanted by open shelving. He can get by with a couple of collarless shirts, khakis and a pair of flip flops. Fortunately, I no longer have to apologize for him (though in some weird way I feel I hold some responsibility). So, a word of warning (and apology!) to all of you with sentimental attachment to those items holding prominent display space on your mantel or filling your glass-doored cabinets - don’t be shocked if your children couldn’t care less. And please don’t be surprised when I, or my counterparts, alert you to your item’s minimal value in today’s marketplace. This is the classic economic paradigm: there is plenty of supply but a little slim on demand.

A Movie, some teenagers and Life as a video game For the last 2 days I’ve been tossing around several topics for this months column. Small business struggles, buying local, supporting your community. All good stuff. Instead, I’m going to take on a topic off the beaten path, away from the before mentioned subjects. A slight diversion if you so graciously allow me the latitude. My friend Dennis Holzman, whose column is on page 3 each month, sparked an idea for me when he spoke about how younger people who inherit some deceased family members belongings, have no intention of “keeping it in the family” for future generations. It’s an action packed, shoot em up video world out there for them. No holding on to old stuff, and sometimes even old values. Which brings me to the first part of the title of this article. A Movie. The movie I’m referring to is Saving Private Ryan. My wife and I watched it in a theatre on the big screen. I’ve thought about that movie often, especially now that the 4th of July is here and our country is about to celebrate it’s independence. I know it’s a Hollywood cinematic story. But to me it touched a raw emotional nerve that made me think of duty and honor. Sacrifices like that have been going on for generations from our country’s break-away from Great Britain, to our own Civil War and right up to the conflicts of today. I sat during the ending of the movie with tears welling up in my eyes. Which now brings me to some Teenagers in the title. In front of us were about five or six teenagers that had an entirely different take on the film we had all just watched. They were upset that there wasn’t enough shooting going on. Their emotional reaction to the movie was one of disappointment. Not enough killing and action. I suppose they were evaluating it based on some life as a video game baseline they

had. Me, I was just thinking about it in terms of the horrors of war and what it does to our service men and women. Yes I understand they are teenagers, but, same movie.... two reactions. Even though I recognize what Mr Holzman wrote in regards to younger family members trying to get rid of this hand me down stuff, I still believe there are some family keepsakes worth hanging on to. I also believe there are some national ideals worth hanging on to. Ideals of respect and honor and a true remembrance of the sacrifices others have made before us, and that some continue to make, even today. Their lives and efforts were not a video game on a screen, they were real. During our countries Independence day celebrations, let us all take a minute to remember that. Wishing you a memorable Fourth of July! Kevin Hotaling Owner and Publisher, Our Towne Colonie

FEATURED The Cookie Factory BUSINESS Where Family comes First For a devoted family man and father, Chris Alberino, Co-Owner of The Cookie Factory, knows the importance of finding the proper balance between his business and personal lives. In his personal life, that means sharing quality time with his fiancée and their children. In his business life, that means spending time with brother and CoOwner, Joe, as well as devoting equal time to his other “children”, which include three retail stores (Troy, Loudonville and Halfmoon) and the commercial bakery that comprise The Cookie Factory. In recent months, the majority of his time has been spent preparing for the grand opening of the newest location in Halfmoon, as well as the new commercial bakery in Troy where the cookies, pies, cakes and other baked goods are created. Now, Chris and Joe (and their “family” of employees), can focus on the middle “child” in Loudonville. Conveniently located at 469 Albany-Shaker Road in Kimberly Square, the 1,300 square foot, retail store offers the quality baked goods that are a staple of The Cookie Factory and the Alberino Family. And as they turn their focus towards the Loudonville location, Chris and Joe know that the same attention to detail and quality will have customers lining up for arguably the finest baked goods in Loudonville and the Capital Region. The family recipe for tasty cookies, breads and other baked goods dates back to the late 1960’s

7

when their grandfather, Joseph Alberino, Sr. opened Alberino & Sons in Troy, along with his sons, Joe, Jr. (Chris’ and Joe’s father) and Carl (their uncle). In 2006, Chris and Joe decided to continue that family tradition when they opened their own bakery, The Cookie Factory, in 2006. The decision to commit to a different business model of supplying their goods to local supermarkets has paid off tremendously. The Cookie Factory supplies Price Chopper and Hannaford supermarkets, as well as several convenience stores in the area. Their signature line of cookies such as Fudge Fantasies, Raspberry Drops and of course, Chocolate Chip can be found on shelves and counters throughout the Capital Region. Since opening in 2014, The Cookie Factory in Loudonville has lived up to the expectations of Chris and Joe, as well as the standard set by The Alberino men that inspired them to continue the family tradition. And as they look to the future of The Cookie Factory, both brothers know that each retail store is an important part of the “family”. “From our humble beginnings in Troy to our newest store in Halfmoon, each place is part of the fabric that connects our family.” And like any dad who knows his middle “child” is clamoring for his attention, he adds with a proud smile, “The Cookie Factory in Loudonville included.”

Expert Shares Cybersecurity Tips for Small Businesses By: Amanda Prischak

Target. Home Depot. Anthem.

These companies and many more have made headlines in recent years after suffering massive data breaches. Each of these incidents put customers’ data at risk—and put a serious dent in the companies’ bottom lines and reputations. Of course, big corporations aren’t the only ones at risk of a data breach: For every large company that’s the victim of a data breach, many other small businesses fall prey as well.

9

Do you think small businesses are becoming more of a target for security breaches? Absolutely. For every large data breach that you hear about in the news, there are dozens of breaches affecting small businesses. Small business data breaches are especially damaging; while Target has the resources to withstand a hit to its bottom line, a smaller company or business could potentially be forced to close its doors if the breach is severe enough.

David Kennedy closely follows these kinds of developments. That’s because he is the founder and senior principal security consultant of TrustedSec, a security services company that counts many of America’s largest companies among its clients. As a recognized thought leader in the security field, David has presented at more than 300 conferences around the world and makes regular appearances on high-profile news outlets such as CNN, Fox News, the BBC and Bloomberg Business.

What are your top security suggestions for small businesses?

He recently took time to answer a few questions about one of today’s biggest business threats and to offer trusted cybersecurity tips for small businesses.

Second, practice good security around passwords. Don’t use the same password from one system to another—that gives hackers access to everything if they guess right once. Consider using a two-factor authentication; if your password is compromised, the second method to log in keeps you protected. Also consider using “pass phrases” that contain spaces. Most online web pages (as well as Windows) support sentences. For example “I like walking down to the lake!” is a complex password and easy to remember.

With regard to business security, do you think things are getting better or worse? Worse. There have been huge increases in data loss—especially with respect to credit cards and health care information. Today, you’re increasingly seeing countries hacking into big corporations. They seek competitive information that lets them compete against American businesses at half the cost. Iran is just one country that has been getting very good at this kind of cyber warfare over the years. You also see organized crime syndicates doing the same thing. Ransom situations are also on the rise. In them, ransomware will take over a company’s information, encrypt it and hold it hostage until the company pays a large sum of money to get it back. This often happens over an extended period of time. CryptoLocker was a ransomware trojan that targeted computers using Windows back in 2013. It extorted millions of dollars from its victims. Are there any positive developments you see happening? It’s a bumpy road, and the United States is behind the times compared to European countries. You don’t see these kinds of large-scale breaches overseas. I’ve testified in front of Congress twice about cybersecurity. One positive development is President Obama’s new executive order that asserts that malicious “cyber-enabled activities” are a national threat. It also establishes sanctions and other consequences for individuals and entities who engage in these activities.

First, make sure your employees are aware of what phishing schemes look like and train them to avoid them. Individuals are increasingly being targeted with more personalized messages that contain malicious links. This is one of the most common and easiest ways to gain access to a system.

My final security suggestion is to make sure someone on your staff has a good understanding of the latest security threats and defenses. It doesn’t necessarily have to be someone’s full-time job—instead, it could be performed part-time or by a contractor. The important thing is that someone is staying on top of protecting the business. What are some resources you’d recommend for business owners looking to learn more about security? There’s always my website, trustedsec.com, and the TrustedSec Security Podcast. I also like the Social-Engineer.org podcast. For books, authors Bill Gardner and Valerie Thomas are really good. In your experience, do you think most businesses have proper data security insurance coverage in place? I don’t. This is not something businesses have had to consider for very long, but it’s becoming the new norm. No matter the business or its size, it’s only becoming more critical to have data security coverage in place.

NOT ALL POOL CHEMICALS ARE CREATED EQUAL! Did you know that not all pool chemicals are created equal? Unlike other brands, Azure brand pool chemicals are proudly made in West Virginia. Azure brand pool chemicals use only the purest raw materials without fillers or byproducts to produce the best quality pool chemicals available; giving you the best value to treat your pool for less money with fewer headaches! Why buy chemicals that use fillers and byproducts to add weight to their products? Why buy chemicals that you will end up having to buy twice as many to treat your pool? Choose a brand you can trust, choose Azure brand pool chemicals. For example, let’s see how the competitions 3” chlorine tablets stack up to Azure brand 3” chlorine tablets. Azure brand 3” chlorine tablets are packaged in buckets with easy open lids and are individually wrapped for easy application. The big box and online retailers typically sell tablets in difficult to open buckets and the tablets aren’t individually wrapped. Azure 3” chlorine tablets are a full 8 ounces, which means they treat more pool water than the smaller tablets sold at big box and online stores. This means that when you purchase a 25lbs bucket of chlorine tablets you are receiving a full 25lbs of 3” chlorine tablets, that’s 50 individually wrapped 3” chlorine tablets per 25lbs bucket! More and more tablets are now 7 ounce or less! You will now have to buy more tablets to treat your pool. 99% of the weight of each Azure 3” tablets is Trichloros-triazinetrione, compare that to the big box and internet sites which barely top 84%! This all means that Azure brand 3”chlorine tablets give you more chlorine for your dollar than the bargain brands. Use one Azure 3” chlorine tablet per 10,000 gallons of water each week to maintain a free chlorine reading in your pool. Did you know that approximately 90% of the chlorine you use in your swimming pool goes to fight algae? This means that only 10% is available for oxidizing other undesirable materials in your pool. These other undesirable materials include waste products (like sweat), suntan lotion and most importantly bacteria and other water borne pathogens. This is why you need to shock your pool on a weekly basis. By shocking your pool on a weekly basis you are chemically cleaning your pool water of these undesirable materials. Azure

brand Shox-All-Plus is the best choice for shocking your pool. Unlike the bag shocks sold at the big box stores and online retailers, Azure brand Shox-All-Plus is pH neutral and contains a proprietary blend of clarifiers to help your pool sparkle like never before! Since Azure brand Shox-All-Plus is pH neutral it won’t harm your vinyl liner! And unlike other less expensive bag shocks Azure brand ShoxAll-Plus won’t cloud your water. Use one 1lbs bag of Azure Shox-All-Plus per 10,000 gallons of pool water each week for sparkling results! Algae are one celled plants that can turn your beautiful blue pool to a green mess in as little as one day! Did you know that millions of algae spores are carried by the wind everyday into outdoor swimming pools! Your best course of action is to use algaecide! But why buy big bulky 1 gallon jugs of algaecide? Try Azure Poly 60 algaecide and stop lugging around those jugs! Unlike the typical 1 gallon jug of algaecide Azure Poly 60 algaecide will not cause foaming in your pool, and unlike other algaecides Azure Poly 60 algaecide does not contain metals which can potentially leave unsightly stains on your pool surfaces! Use 4 ounces per 10,000 gallons of pool water each week to keep the algae spores from turning your crystal blue pool into a green swamp! Stop into your local Phillips Hardware location today and ask for a free computerized water test and float trouble free through summer using Azure brand pool chemicals!

TOWN TIMES

with PAULA MAHAN

SUPERVISOR, TOWN OF COLONIE Colonie is a great place to do business. We are a safe and beautiful community with one of the region’s lowest tax rates, and our central location means it’s easy to get here. These are among the reasons why several national retailers have been attracted to Colonie as the home of their only Capital Region locations (Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Sonic, among others). But many of us are not as aware of the steady movement of high-tech and manufacturing businesses into Colonie. The Albany Business Review’s 2014 Book of Lists shows eight companies based in Colonie are among the region’s top 25 technology companies ranked by regional revenue. They include some well-known local names – like Philips Healthcare, AngioDynamics, CMA Consulting Service, and Plug Power. But others are a little less well known, like CloudSmartz (IP Logic) and Versatrans Solutions.

The Book of Lists also shows Colonie as home to six of the region’s top 25 manufacturers, again ranked by regional revenue. Some of them are the same high-tech businesses mentioned above, but in the number 14 spot is pool-maker Latham International, with 350 local employees. Protective Industrial Products, which manufactures protective equipment, is number 15 with 90 employees. Number 17 on the list is Precision Valve and Automation with 175 local employees. The Town actively worked to attract the company to a redeveloped Colonie industrial site. A true Colonie success story, Precision Valve relocated its hightech manufacturing operations here in 2010. Colonie was chosen in 2014 when Dura Vent relocated its manufacturing operations, bringing 78 jobs to a vacant warehouse and plans to create 100 more. Last year, an RPI start-up, Thermo Aura, moved into a redeveloped manufacturing facility on Railroad Avenue, an area the Town has actively sought to rejuvenate. IntegraOptics, which has 50 employees, is planning to expand. Hygie-Tech USA, BestPass, and H2Pump are all based in Colonie. These are just a few examples. The fact is that the high-tech and manufacturing sectors are quietly growing all across our great Town. Some companies are well-established; some are starting up. But they’re choosing to come to Colonie, bringing with them good-paying jobs and a better business climate for us all

Summertime, vacations, and traveling with your pet! Finally summer is here! After a long hard winter we all are ready to celebrate. Our pets are a huge part of our family and it’s natural to feel that when we travel we want them to travel with us. There are a lot of things to consider before taking your pet on the road. Making sure you have pet friendly accommodations..., The rules and policies for breeds, vaccinations and the time your pet may be left in alone in your hotel. I highly recommend micro chipping your dog for any circumstances especially in travel. Traveling to new places is exciting but also can be stressful. Situations can arise that may startle your pet to the point where they may wander off. Collars and tags can get lost.....micro chipping is the only proper way to ensure that your pet can be safely returned if found by someone else. Every vet and most dog officers can use a scanner to locate the owners and reunite them with their lost pets. There are many micro chipping clinics throughout the Capital District also your local shelter will administer it for a nominal fee. Your vet can also administer with a matter of an appointment it only takes a short while and relatively painless, it is a needle very much like a vaccine.

Leaving your pet in the car is never an option. For as much awareness as there is and as many times tragedies have happen....it’s still overwhelmingly concerns me how many times I see a dog in a car while people are in a restaurant or amusement park or shopping mall. A dog’s natural body temperature runs 103°. The temperature in your car get up to 200 degrees, depending on the temperature outside, the kind of vehicle you have, and how long it has been in sun. It doesn’t take much for heat stroke to set in, or worse. Every year pets die in cars. Animals are not able to open a window or open a door like you can. Typically, they will be quiet as heat overcomes them, so there won’t be crying or other audible indications of trouble. Cracking the windows does not help; it doesn’t prevent the temperature in the car from rising. Leaving pets inside a closed car, or even one with the windows rolled down, is dangerous, deadly, and illegal. Report pets in hot cars to the police immediately by calling 911. Wishing you all..... especially our four-legged friends a happy and safe summer!

Say H.E.L.L.O. Albany! Say “Hello!” to one of the first referral groups in Albany with a mission of helping not only the business community, but those in need as well. H.E.L.L.O. Albany stands for Helping to Enrich the Lives and Legacies of Others. H.E.L.L.O. Albany’s mission is to grow their businesses through strong relationships while also focusing on those in need in our local communities. This makes them a non-traditional referral group comprised of a diverse roster of giving professionals. They focus on creating happy, healthy, and prosperous futures for themselves and others. This is achieved by working with small, local non-profits who really need assistance. Once chosen, they work with these non-profits to assist in awareness to their cause, fundraising efforts, volunteering, and any other way they may need assistance. There isn’t a job too big or too small this group of diverse professionals can’t handle! In the best interest of giving a non-profit the time necessary for adequate assistance, they only work with one non-profit per year. This year, the H.E.L.L.O. Albany Group has chosen Hope 7 Community Center located on the east side of Troy, NY. Hope 7 was founded in 1968, under the leadership of dedicated individuals who saw a need for recreational programs for Troy’s East Side youth. They currently reside in a refurbished firehouse. This goes hand-in-hand with the mission to “provide life-essential and enhancing services in a nurturing and non-preferential manner, to promote self-sufficiency, personal growth, and commitment to serving one’s community.” So far in the 2015 calendar year, the H.E.L.L.O. Albany Group has assisted in gathering donation items for their food pantry, gently-used computer equipment for their after-school program, fundraising efforts, and increased awareness to their cause. From June 28th through July 3rd, H.E.L.L.O. Albany has partnered with Price Chopper on Hoosick Street and Vandenburgh Avenue locations in Troy for food donations. Cornerstone Telephone on 3rd St in Troy will also have a box set up for donations. During the summer months, Hope 7 is in higher demand for peanut butter, jelly or jam, mayo, mustard, ketchup, powdered milk, and canned goods. Many children are at home all day without the nourishment of a school-provided lunch. Although these foods may seem affordable to us, they may not be affordable to the families who need them. As Hope 7 prepares for school to start up this fall, the H.E.L.L.O. Albany Group will be facilitating a “Back to School” Barbeque in late August. This event will be packed full of back to school supplies, food, sun, and most of all – FUN! Keep a keen eye out for details to come.

Team in Training Member and Four-Time Survivor My name is Scott Baker. I have survived NonHodgkins Lymphoma four times since 1999, and over the past year I have participated with the Team in Training (TNT) to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) with the goal of finding a cure for blood cancers.

Lymphoma in 1999, Team in Training had already been raising critical funds for 11 years, which were

provided for the most promising therapies for blood cancers. I was 29 years old, and although shocked, my doctors were able to set my mind at ease because my disease was very treatable. Because of those treatments, we were able to achieve remission and I enjoyed good heath for six years. By the time I recurred in 2006, a breakthrough

immunotherapy drug, called Rituxan, which targeted my specific cancer cells while sparing my healthy cells, was available to treat my Lymphoma. Funding for the development of Rituxan was provided by LLS and members of the Team in Training. After achieving another remission, my medical team suggested an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant (ASCT), which is a bone marrow transplant using a patient’s own cells. Once again LLS came to my rescue because they provided funding for the development of bone marrow transplantation. In January 2012 I was diagnosed with a primary tumor, unrelated to my original cancers, called Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (PCNSL), or Brain Lymphoma. Fortunately for me, this disease falls under the category of blood cancers and there were treatments available. We achieved remission by May of 2012, but the cancer recurred almost immediately after treatment had ended. I was admitted to Memorial Sloan Kettering in August 2012 and received the most aggressive therapy known to fight PCNSL. This time around Rituxan was

administered directly into my brain along with other systemic therapies. Remission was achieved a fourth time and we were able to harvest enough stem cells to have another ASCT. As I was sitting in a hospital bed, I read about Team in Training and scrolled through pictures of purpleclad runners and cyclists competing in endurance races to raise funds for treatments to cure blood cancers such as those I had battled four times. I imagined myself joining them in that effort. One year after reading about the things that Team in Training (TnT) was doing, I sat with a gentleman who was working for the Upstate New York/Vermont Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to share my story with him and in October 2014 I ran my first 5k with TnT while members of the team cheered me on. I ran my second 5k with the team in May 2015. The team has given me opportunities to raise awareness, training tips for both running and fundraising, and encouragement to continue my mission to ensure that everyone who is diagnosed with a blood cancer has their best chance to survive and thrive.

Welcome to Our New Director The library’s new Director, Evelyn Neale, will be starting work on June 29th . Evelyn was previously Director of both the East Greenbush Community Library and the Mechanicville Public Library. She will have more to say next month in this space, but for now, she writes: “I have worked in and with libraries for more than 25 years. I grew up in Rockland County and moved with my family to the Capital District in 2001 from Long Island. I received my Bachelors from Stony Brook University and my Masters from Queens College. Certified originally to teach, I enjoy presenting on professional topics at workshops and conferences. I am innovative, forward thinking and creative. Some projects I’ve been involved in include the automation of four libraries – including participation on the automation selection committee for the Southern Adirondack Library System and the Upper Hudson Library System. I have been involved in a number of building projects including the building of a multi-purpose outdoor space in East Greenbush. Finally, I am an active participant in both my personal and professional communities, too.” Circulation of Downloadable Items OverDrive, the library’s service for downloadable ebooks, audiobooks, videos, and magazines currently has approximately 20,000+ items for you to borrow on your reading and listening devices with your library card – and Colonie patrons have really taken to it. For 2014, William K. Sanford Town Library patrons accounted for 43,517 checkouts, or, almost 20% of checkouts in the 29-member Upper Hudson Library System! Total checkouts last year for the whole system were 220,417. Get your downloadable ebooks, audiobooks, videos and magazines here: http:// digitalcollection.uhls.org Photography Contest Deadline Nears Calling all amateur photographers: the annual Library photography contest is next month and entries are due soon! Each photographer may submit up to two framed photos for the 2015 Colonie Library Photography Contest and Exhibit. The exhibit will run from August 4 to 31. Certificates will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for both an adult and a teen category. Photos will be judged for their impact, artistry, and technique. Submission Requirements: All entries must be framed and ready to hang with a wire (preferred) or brackets. Joe, “a 1945 American war film directed by William Wellman, starring Burgess Meredith and Robert Mitchum. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Mitchum’s only nomination for Best Supporting Actor. This was the film that established him as one of the world’s biggest movie stars. The story is a tribute to the American infantryman during World War II, told through the eyes of Pulitzer Prizewinning war correspondent Ernie Pyle, with dialogue and narration lifted from Pyle’s columns. The film concentrates on one company that Pyle accompanies into combat in Tunisia and Italy. In 2009, the film was named to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being ‘culturally, historically or aesthetically’ significant and will be preserved for all time.” Medicare 101: A Primer for Everyone If you are enrolled in Medicare or soon to be enrolled, you may have many questions.
