Given the choice, none of us would choose to learn about financial issues during a crisis like divorce, job loss or death of a spouse. However, that’s what many of us do. Sometimes, we think we’re helping our partner when we handle the finances alone. But nothing could be further from the truth. Like any business partnership, your partner in home finances needs to know how to carry on in case you die or become disabled. It takes more than having a credit card in your name or knowing your net worth to control your finances. You should have: • A loan in your name that establishes a credit history • Individual and joint savings and investment goals • Your own income replacement plan in case of disability • Your own financial strategy for retirement • An understanding of joint Social Security and pension benefits for both you and your spouse

WHAT’S IN YOUR CLOSET MUSINGS OF A DEALER I keep assuming that there are no more hidden treasures, that there are no longer untouched attics, unopened trunks, undiscovered collections. But, much like in the archeological world where periodically a new tomb is unearthed in a sandy desert, I keep stumbling into unmined territory.

RARE BOOKS, AUTOGRAPHS SILVER, LOCAL HISTORY STYLISH OBJECTS...

This week I travelled to Dutchess County and purchased a small collection of first edition Charles Dickens books. It included the complete first printings of Dombey & Sons and Little Dorrit, each in a series of twenty “magazines” and a first edition of Great Expectations, plus the first appearance of Oscar Wilde’s Picture of Dorian Gray (in Lippincott Magazine). During the last several months I have found myself pouring through dresser drawers filled with photographs, drawings, letters and artifacts from one of the Civil War Generals who led the troops at the Battle of Gettysburg. I have strained my eyes and back analyzing a collection of scientific material including letters and lab notes by Michael Faraday (electromagnetism inventions) and John Herschel (astronomical and photographic advances). I have sorted through an enormous collection of souvenirs from the 1893 Columbian Exposition including clocks, table coverings, advertising cards, medallions, brochures and banks. I love my job. Each day holds the potential to bring some new trove of treasures out from the shadows into the light. Give us a call at Dennis Holzman Aniques. We look forward to the next opportunity to sort and research and… we buy stuff daily---single items, collections or entire estates.

Message From

The Entrepreneur Well it’s come to the close of the labor day holiday weekend. I’ve been working some long hours over the past few days, weeks and months..... Working to keep everything together with my business and personal life. I’m not complaining, just stating a fact of life when you are a business owner and a entrepreneur. I recently read an article by Scott Dinsmore who has a website and blog called “Live Your Legend - Change the world by doing work you love” Scott is an entrepreneur like myself. The article he wrote was titled “Full Disclosure: 12 Reasons You Probably Shouldn’t Be An Entrepreneur (The story no one tells)”. In it he cites the false starts and troubles he experienced as he started down the path of working for himself. Some of his full disclosure 12 reasons included: #3. I constantly have to be innovating and reinventing. I wonder if the way I’m doing things still makes sense or if it’s time to change. I don’t know what this business or my income will look like in a year. #4. And while no job or career is anywhere close to certain, as an entrepreneur I am very very aware of that uncertainty every day. Often times it excites me, but every now and again it brings me to my knees. #5. There is no being off the clock. If things need to get done then you keep working. #8. Self motivating can get unbelievably exhausting. Sometimes it’d be nice to have someone to just tell me exactly what to do next. #10. I wear more hats in a day than I thought I’d wear in a lifetime. I got into this business because I wanted to help people find and do work they love. I didn’t realize I was signing up to be part-time manager, CFO, artist, writer, event planner, designer, box checker and box creator. I’m now grateful to have a team, but that still doesn’t make all my hats go away. #11. Your identity can become so tied to your business that it’s hard to distinguish between the two. A decrease in sales or traffic or growth sometimes impacts my own confidence and self worth. Even though intellectually I know one is not the other. #12. Wondering how sustainable the business is can be incredibly terrifying. The pressure of thinking how my ideas will support my family over the years is intense. That can

keep me up at night and chase me out of bed in the morning. ********** Well at least I know I’m not alone in my thoughts :), and I understand that all small business owners go through the same, or at least, similar experiences. So, how can you, the local community shopper, help to alleviate some of these stresses for the small business owner? When you can, make the choice to point your purchasing power in the direction of local small business. I understand not everything can be purchased locally. But when you can make purchases to support a deserving hard working, local entrepreneur, please do so. Believe me, you can magically help that small business and your local community at the same time. Yes we all have our troubles, and everyday I try to keep in the forefront of my mind that it’s not easy for anyone in today’s world. I still believe a little empathy and compassion can go a long way to making this a better community, country and world we live in. Kevin Hotaling, Owner and Publisher, Our Towne Colonie

That includes hay fever and respiratory, food, and skin allergies. That’s a lot of sniffling and sneezing and itching and wheezing! It’s not any wonder that researchers keep trying to figure out ways to relieve some of this suffering. Here’s a summary of a few recent allergy studies that reveal a few surprises about allergies in kids. Too clean? Think twice before going overboard with the cleaning supplies. A recent study found that inner-city newborns exposed to a too-clean home were more vulnerable to allergies and asthma later in life. Surprisingly, the more rodent, roach, and cat allergens they were exposed to, the better. Allergens plus bacteria appeared to be the most protective. This study supports what’s called the “hygiene hypothesis.” What does that mean? When homes are too clean, young kids’ bodies might not develop the right responses to allergens like cat dander. Maybe cleanliness isn’t really next to godliness and oddly enough this theory runs a bit counter to the way most of us have been brought up. The study needs more follow-up, especially since it reverses the results of earlier studies. So, don’t rush out and adopt a cat (or let your house become infested!) But stay tuned for more on this topic. Moo! Exposure to microbes may also be behind another study’s recent findings. In rural areas of Sweden, researchers found that kids growing up on dairy farms had one-tenth the risk of allergies as kids living in other rural areas. The study found for the first time that delayed development of immune systems puts youngsters at risk for allergies. So the researchers suspect something on these dairy farms is helping their immune systems to mature. Speaking of milk (and eggs). Researchers recently surveyed more than 300 caregivers of kids about their kids’ allergies. What they found surprised them. Parents weren’t most anxious about peanut and tree allergies—which are the most severe. They were most worried about milk and egg allergies. In a way, it makes sense: Milk and eggs are used in so many dishes. It may be harder for parents to keep track of them. Fortunately, about two-thirds of the parents surveyed clearly understood how severe their child’s allergic reaction was. This is important because it’s necessary to have a clear plan of action to handle your child’s reactions. In severe cases, you might even need to give your child epinephrine. Where you least expect it. Allergens can show up in unexpected places. A recent report about a skin allergy in an 11year-old boy is a good example. Doctors finally traced the problem to the nickel in his iPad. Covering the iPad solved the problem. According to some doctors, skin allergies like this are becoming much more common. This report is a good reminder to consider the effects of metallic electronics and other potential sources of nickel exposure such as clothing fasteners and ear piercings. If any of your kids suffer from allergies, consult with your doctor. You might need referral to a special doctor (an allergist). Ask our pharmacists your questions about allergy medications as we are here to help! Questions? Email me at jmcdonald@marrarx.com

Work to Become a Better Investor On Sept. 1, we observe Labor Day — a celebration of the American worker. Of course, you work hard at your own job, but, when you think of it, every worthwhile endeavor in life requires significant effort — and that’s certainly the case with investing. The harder you work at it, the more likely you are to make progress toward your goals. So as you think about investing, consider the following areas in which you will need to apply yourself: Work to identify your goals. It’s important that you know just why you’re investing. Do you want to send your children (or grandchildren) to college? Do you want to retire early? What sort of retirement lifestyle do you envision? What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Identifying your financial goals is the necessary first step toward achieving them. Work to know your own risk tolerance. It’s essential that you know your own investment personality — that is, how much risk you can comfortably handle. If you think you can handle a relatively high level of risk, but you find yourself worrying excessively over every drop in the market, you may need to re-evaluate your risk tolerance and adjust your investment habits. Conversely, if you believe yourself to be highly risk-avoidant, but you find yourself frustrated over the relatively low returns you get from conservative investments, you may need to revise your thinking — and your actions. Work to avoid bad habits. Many investors chase after “hot” stocks or try to “time” the market. However, hot stocks can cool off quickly, while efforts to predict market highs and lows are doomed to fail — because no one can accurately forecast those points. You will want to be especially diligent about learning to look past the headlines and beyond short-term price movements in the financial markets — because too many people overreact to these events. If you can avoid these bad investment habits, you’ll be doing yourself a favor. Work to follow a consistent investment strategy. If you invest over the course of several decades, you are going to see a lot of ups and downs in the financial markets. And when the markets get choppy, you may be tempted to take a “time out” from investing. But if you do this repeatedly, you will certainly interrupt the progress you need to make toward your financial goals. If you can develop the discipline to follow a consistent investment strategy and to keep investing in all types of markets, you have a pretty good chance of “smoothing out” the effects of market volatility over time. And, as a bonus, you’ll be far less likely to concern yourself over day-to-day price fluctuations. Work to review your progress. Along with your financial advisor, consistently review your progress toward your goals. Your investment professional should establish your portfolio review frequency and meet with you to discuss your investments at least once a year. So, there you have it — some ideas on how you can work to be a better investor. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Mums the Word! Facts about Fall Hardy Mums We know that fall is in the air when the days begin to get shorter, the nights are a little cooler, and mums and other fall décor start appearing at your local garden centers. Chrysanthemums, usually shortened to mums, are a staple of fall gardens and why not? They bloom in a variety of colors such as bronze, burgundy, violet, pink, white, and yellow and remain vibrant looking even through the first few light frosts of the season. When the annuals you planted in the springtime are beginning to fade away it’s a sure bet that a few mums would look terrific in their place. But how do we take care of them? Are they going to come back next season? To take care of mums is relatively straightforward. They enjoy full sun and well-drained soil, and give them plenty of space to allow air circulation which will help to prevent disease. Water them on sunny, dry days, and on rainy days let Mother Nature take care of them. One of the best things you can do to successfully over winter hardy mums is to not prune them. The existing branches will actually protect the roots, which is where the mum will store its energy over the winter. You can make them even hardier with mulch, by planting them on the south side of your home, or protecting them in some way from the harsh winter winds. Follow these simple steps and there is a good possibility that next spring the mums that you purchased in the fall will “come back to life” and could even provide your garden with years of fall beauty. 621 Albany-Shaker Road Loudonville (518) 458.9274 www.colonie.org/LIBRARY Noon Book Review Returns: The Death Class: A True Story About Life

More Films and Music Too!

Our 12th year of Noon Book Reviews returns on Wednesday, September 17th with William Rainbolt – retired from 27 years of teaching at UAlbany’s Journalism Program. He will be reviewing The Death Class: A True Story About Life, by Erika Hayasaki. The class, officially, “Death in Perspective” – is taught by Professor Norma Bowe at Kean University in New Jersey. It has a three-year waiting list of students wanting to be admitted – in fact, it is one of the most popular courses at Kean. Says the publisher: “Under the guise of discussions about last wills and last breaths and visits to cemeteries and crematoriums, Norma teaches her students to find grace in one another.” The author, an award-winning narrative journalist, Hayasaki had personal and professional reasons for immersing herself in Dr. Bowe’s course. She had to agree to take the course and do all the assignments, which are included in her book; at the end, she produced a work of long-form journalism that, the Chicago Tribune noted, lets the reader “be rewarded with poetic passages and assorted revelations you’ll like not forget. . .[it is] a book that probes death [and] shines light on how to live well, how to live a life of meaning.” Since retirement, Mr. Rainbolt has become a Certified Lay Minister in the United Methodist Church, specializing in pastoral care, spiritual direction, pulpit supply, and programming; a Certified Spiritual Director; and a Clinical Pastoral Educationtrained volunteer chaplain at Albany Medical Center. The review begins at 12:15 PM; bring your lunch if you are on lunch hour.

Colonie Library Fiction Book Group Resumes for 2014/15!

Film Series: American Cinema and WW II Lenny Zapala – film expert and Director of the Menands Public Library – will be hosting a monthly film series starting this month (you may also know Lenny from his recent book review/film presentation in June on the book Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War). Lenny will be showing a newsreel and short from the 1940s and then a feature film from that era. Up first: on Thursday night September 18th starting at 6:30 PM will be John Ford’s 1933 movie Pilgrimage, which is about a woman who tries to come to terms with the death of her son killed in World War I while visiting his grave in France. Many consider this Ford’s first great film. Lenny’s series is grouped under such topics as: The Legacy of the Great War; Hollywood Warns the Nation; Allies Against a Common Foe; The War at Home; The Cost of Victory; and The Boys Come Home. Upcoming films for 2014 will be: Confessions of a Nazi Spy on Thursday October 23rd; The Mortal Storm on Thursday November 20th; and Buck Privates on Thursday December 11th. From Lenny: “2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the ending of World War II. Through a series of 12 films shown on a monthly basis, I hope to show how the United States went from a Great Depression ridden isolationist nation to a nation cautiously trying to figure out its new role as a world power. I will present some brief remarks before each film to fill in the historical context. To try to capture to the movie experience pre-television, I will show a newsreel contemporary to that night’s film and a short.” Please join us!

We have some programs in the works for you to look forward to: I-Hsin Wu, Adjunct Professor of Sociology at UAlbany and a member of the NYS Office for the Aging’s Targeting Workgoup working with the Chinese-American community, will host a four-part film/discussion series starting in November titled “Introducing Chinese Culture Through Chinese Film.” Tentatively scheduled movies are: Raise the Red Lantern; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; The Joy Luck Club; and Eat Drink Man Woman. The music duo of Sonny and Perley (who always pack the Stedman Room) will be here on a Sunday afternoon in October. The concert theme is Brazillian Romance: The Bossa Nova Phenomenon. Dates and times for the Chinese film series and Sonny and Perley TBA.

The fiction book group will resume its monthly meeting schedule on Tuesday, September 30th at 7:00 PM. The group reads one book per month (provided by the library) and meets to informally discuss it on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM in the library’s Youth Services Activity Room. The monthly meeting schedule is September through May with December off. If you want more information on the group or would like to join, please contact Paul Drezelo at drezelop@ colonielibrary.org Knitting Group Dates The knitting group will meet in the Youth Services Activity Room on Fridays, September 12th & 26th, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
