TASTE Jandowae

Known as the gateway

to the Western Downs, Dalby is a thriving regional hub built on black soil plains responsible for a large proportion of Queensland’s thriving agricultural and livestock production. With Queensland’s largest grain receival centre, Dalby is surrounded by a tapestry of wheat, cotton, mung beans, sunflowers, sorghum, millet, chickpeas, and barley. It also produces pork, beef & lamb.

Whilst visiting Dalby why not grab a picnic lunch before heading out to the historic Jimbour House, where you can enjoy a selfguided walk through the formal gardens whilst learning more about this sandstone mansion and its living history. Dalby is home to three of the region’s biggest events, Big Skies Festival, Opera at Jimbour and Dalby’s Delicious and Delightful Festival, which are all must see and do events!

Head over to the Butchers Pantry or the award-winning Urban Paddock for your takeaway picnic needs, or C’est Cheese on the Go to purchase a specialised cheese platter which includes Saleview Estate honey, Bunnyconnellan olives and Woombye cheese.

Dalby’s Pioneer Park Museum is proud to display one of the largest collections of working pioneer tractors and agricultural machinery in Queensland and is the perfect opportunity to recap our yesteryear.

HISTORY:

Dalby was founded in the early 1840s at a place known locally as “The Crossing” on Myall Creek, a tributary of the Condamine River. The first settler was Henry Dennis, who explored the region and chose land for himself and others in the locality. Today, an obelisk in Edward Street denotes the location where Dennis camped.

Located on the edge of Dalby, Burando Downs is a boutique farm that provides high quality produce grown without the use of synthetic chemicals and fertilisers. The cold nights and sun-drenched days of Western Downs’ climate create flavoursome and aromatic garlic bulbs unique to this part of the world. As well as producing a fantastic fresh product to customers locally and interstate, owners Lois and Leon also produce a variety of other garlic products in the farm’s registered kitchen. These range from dehydrated granules, garlic relish and jam to their very popular smoked and black garlic.

Burando is a two-person operation where everything apart from the ground cultivation is done manually. This hands-on approach ensures the final product is of a superior and highly sought-after quality and can be purchased at local Western Downs markets in Dalby and further afield in Miles, Tara, Moonie, and Wandoan.

The Kobbers team also grow their own herbs on site, such as lemongrass, mint, kaffir limes, parsley and even lemons to use in their meals. They also dapple in growing chillies, with ten different varieties already planted and used on their menu, including an awesome house made chilli jam.
