TASTE Condamine

The township of Condamine is

located south of Miles on the meandering Condamine River. Surrounding Condamine are many feedlots and a freshwater fish farm, as well as arguably the region’s top camping location, Caliguel Lagoon.

You are in the heart of cattle country here and Condamine is famous for the invention of the Condamine or Bullfrog Bell. Designed to be hung from the necks of working bullocks, the bells ensured the stockmen were able to locate their cattle when left to roam and graze. Stockmen were even able to determine the distance of a bullock by the sound of its bell. Visitors can learn more of this history when they stop to read the inscription on the side of the large replica bell in Bell Park.

Catching a “Cod on the Condamine” is also a popular activity for visitors and locals alike, followed by a coldie at the Condamine Hotel where you can talk about the one that got away!

The Condamine Hotel is a famous establishment set in the town that is home to the Condamine Bell.

Sitting on the banks of the Condamine River, this popular country hotel with modern country architecture provides a menu that houses a range of local paddock to plate options. You are in feedlot country here, and on their menu, you will find both rib and eye fillet, brisket and beef cheeks supplied by Meandarra based producer Four Daughters Premium Black Angus. The T-bones are from Rangeland Quality Meats and these are supplied by local Miles butcher Chaplain Butchery. Condabilla fish farm supplies their Murray Cod and a variety of their sides are sourced from local producers.

HISTORY: The first European to pass through the district was the explorer Allan Cunningham who crossed the river in 1827 and named it after the aide-de-camp to Governor Darling whose surname was De la Condamine.
