Sitting at the junction of the

Warrego and Leichhardt highways, Miles is a vibrant rural township known for its well-preserved pioneering history and good oldfashioned country hospitality.

A visit to Miles must include the Miles Historical Village Museum, where over 30 restored and original buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries make up the streetscape. Operating since 1971, the museum is home to collections of military, lapidary, shells, and bottles.

Miles also boast Chinaman’s Lagoon, situated on the edge of town and home to rare pink waterlilies which bloom during the summer and autumn months, this popular Miles picnic spot makes for a pictureperfect picnic setting for a morning tea or lunch break. The lagoon’s namesake – a Chinese market gardener who arrived in Chinchilla in 1880.

HISTORY: The town is named in honour of William Miles, the owner of Dulacca Station from 1860-75, a local Member of Parliament and the Minister for Railways when the Miles Railway Station was built at Dogwood Creek. The town was originally named Dogwood Crossing by Ludwig Leichhardt who was impressed by the large number of dogwood trees in the area.

MILES WHOLESALE MEATS AND SMALLGOODS

Miles Wholesale Meats and Smallgoods are a family owned business and an independent retail butcher shop located in the heart of Miles. The business was established from humble beginnings in 1995 and their produce is available for visitors to purchase, as well as being sold commercially to restaurants, hotels, hospitals, mining camps and sporting or charity organisations across the Western Downs. The owners have a tried and true strategy where they let the quality of their produce speak for themselves, knowing the high calibre of their cuts.

Beef sold here comes from a local farmer in Meandarra and is processed in the butcher shop. You will also find Murray Cod from Chinchilla’s Condabilla Fish available for purchase here.

They are also renowned for their ready homemade meal options such as butcher’s beef lasagna and a variety of pies.

For many years the butchery have been entering their beef and homemade gourmet sausages into National competitions, taking home the title of National sausage king in the traditional Australian beef category in 2010.

MILES WINDSOR HOTEL

The Miles Windsor Hotel is rich in history and local charm. They proudly support a range of local suppliers around the Western Downs, such as Chaplain’s Butcher, Miles Wholesale Meats and Smallgoods, Devon Court Hereford and Mort & Co Wagyu.

Their nightly T-bone special – a popular with the locals – is sourced from Chinchilla butcher, Gleeson Quality Meats.

The Miles Windsor Hotel also purchase produce from the local Chaplain Butchery and Miles Wholesale Meats and Smallgoods for the other proteins which highlight their menu.

When visiting the Miles Windsor Hotel, you may also notice the array of art displayed on every wall. This art is created by local artisans to depict the local area and showcase regional creativity. This is collected by owners Jaimee and Stephen for patrons to enjoy.

QUEENSLAND HOTEL

The Queensland Hotel, or as locals call it ‘The Q’, prides themselves on serving hearty, home-style pub classics, using an array of locally sourced produce. The meat you find on the menu is delivered from Chaplain Butchery in Miles. Bread is delivered freshly made from the local baker, Mace’s Hot Bread.

Fresh produce is purchased from the local IGA and FoodWorks who supply many businesses in the Western Downs.

At the Queensland Hotel you will be sure to find generous portions and an authentic atmosphere in which to enjoy.

MACE’S HOT BREAD AND CHAPLAIN BUTCHERY

Mace’s Hot Bread in Miles are a family owned local artisan bakery catering to visitors’ every bread and pastry need. All their delicious cakes and slices are handcrafted, and they are the only salad bar in the town. All bread and pastry for their pies, sausage rolls and slices are handmade on site. The team produce the freshest sandwiches and rolls seven days a week.

Mace’s Hot Bread supply bread all over the region daily or every second day, as well as locally to all service stations and retail outlets such as IGA and FoodWorks.

The bakery purchase meat to make their sausage rolls and pies from local Chaplain Butchery, also in Miles. Chaplain’s lamb, pork and beef come from Steve’s Country Kills in Chinchilla which is stocked from local farmers within the Western Downs region.
