LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the August / September issue of Out & About. September is a month of festivals for our neighbourhood, starting with the Zee London Mela in Gunnersbury Park on Sunday 3rd September. The spectacular South Asian festival attracts thousands of people with a continuous programme of live music and classical and modern dance on the four main stages, street art, fashion and food as well as cabaret, comedy and circus by British Asian and international acts. Page 5 Brentford Festival takes place the same day in Blondin Park with more live music, pony rides, a fun fair, a display of classic & vintage vehicles, food, drink and a chance to talk to the Royal Horticultural Society on their tour bus about your plant queries. Page 10 The following Sunday is Tidefest, a celebration of the river with opportunities to try out paddle boarding, canoeing and river dipping, walks and talks on river related themes and boat trips on board the historic Thames launch the Windrush. with memoirs, journalists, historians: David Baddiel, Hunter Davies, Jo Malone, Laurence Rees, Jeremy Vine. Page 15 The last Sunday of the month is the Chiswick Dog Show, 24th September. Not a show that takes itself too seriously, you can enter your dog in the Naughtiest Dog or My Dog’s Got Talent classes for a mere £3 and it’s great fun whether you’re a dog owner or not. I am proud to be one of the judges this year. Page 18 Other highlights of the cultural scene include Ballet4Life opening up what can be an elitist art form, for everyone. ZEE LONDON
A celebration of South Asian culture in Gunnersbury Park
ZEE London Mela is set to make a dramatic return to Gunnersbury Park on Sunday 3rd September. Having skipped a year last year, this is the 15th anniversary of the celebration of South Asian culture and promises to be the best yet. The free festival boasts live music on four main stages featuring British Asian and international artists and the best in contemporary and classical dance. India’s Queen of Hip Hop, Hard Kaur is flying in from Mumbai exclusively for the event and is joined on a strong bill by the biggest selling female Bhangra artist in the world, Miss Pooja. Also flying in from India for an exclusive London performance are the ever popular Bhangra pop maestros Desi Crew, from Amritsar. Mixing top artists from the subcontinent with British Asian urban artists, there will be dance, comedy and cabaret, Asian-influenced street theatre and circus as well as stalls and exhibitions and a fantastic array of food on offer. Artistic director Ajay Chhabra says: “We are inviting all Londoners to this year’s ZEE London Mela, to celebrate the diversity of our great city. What London needs right now is a coming together, a sense of joy of cultures and communities and this is an open invite to you all. This year’s theme is 'Love', love will conquer hate, join us on Sunday 3rd September in Gunnersbury Park.” The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “This wonderful family event showcases the fantastic diversity of Asian arts and culture in the capital, and invites Londoners from all backgrounds to come together and get involved. Over the last fifteen years the Mela really has gone from strength to strength, with fantastic street theatre, dancing and delicious Asian cuisine. JAZZ AT GEORGE IV IN CHISWICK Jazz promoter Larry Pryce puts Chiswick on the map Putting on live jazz in London has always been something of a tenuous business. Despite its increasing popularity the genre is still sometimes regarded as something of niche art form and some of the long-established venues in central London have been lost. Pizza On The Park has been transformed into London’s first 6 star hotel and the Dover Street Restaurant & Jazz Bar which I used to run, is now a late night fusion restaurant with DJ’s manning the decks into the early hours. The demise of some of the old venues in the centre of town is forcing both
resident Jazz enthusiasts and visitors to look further afield to places like the Bull’s Head in Barnes and the relocated Vortex in Dalston. But West London should have its own centre of Jazz excellence. To that end over the past year my company Live Music To Go has put on a series of Jazz nights with some of London’s top musicians in partnership with The Chiswick Calendar in the superbly appointed Boston Room at George IV pub, 185 Chiswick High Rd. Coming up this autumn
After a natural break for the holiday months, Jazz At George IV will be back with two superb concerts featuring the sensational French jazz vocalist Oriana Curls and her trio on September 28th and local big band The Jazz Mondays on October 26th. Oriana has developed her own distinctive style having worked with some of the best musicians, writers and producers around, among them Andy Bradfield (Imelda May, Rufus Wainwright), Marcella Puppini and Alex Golding, (Lulu, Keziah Jones). As accomplished a violinist as she is a vocalist, her impressive four-octave
range of a voice soars effortlessly through Jazz, Latin, Blues & Gallic chansons. The Jazz Mondays are a Chiswick based 13-piece band famous for their eight-strong "wall of saxes" fronting a tight, four-piece rhythm section and a dynamic vocalist. Their eclectic repertoire ranges across jazz to soul, ska and funk, from Dizzy Gillespie to Amy Winehouse. At last Chiswick has a strong jazz presence again.

Messing about ON THE RIVER Martin Salter, the organiser of TideFest 2017 invites you to come and ‘Enjoy the River’
TideFest will be held at Strand-onthe-Green on Sunday September 10th. The annual event, which first started in 2014, aims to highlight the recreational importance of the Thames to Londoners and to encourage people to 'enjoy the river'. To that end there will be all sorts of river related activities for all the family including foreshore walks, an angling competition, boat trips, paddleboarding, river dipping, kayaking, nature reserve visits, water games, stalls and displays, talks and film
showings, live fish tanks, local artists, food, music and generous discounts off admissions to the London Museum of Water and Steam at Kew Bridge. There will be a rare opportunity to visit Oliver’s Island opposite Strandon-the-Green and to learn about the archaeological finds which have been made locally on a walk along the Thames foreshore led by archaeologist Dr Fiona Haughey. INSPIRING WOMEN AT THE CHISWICK BOOK FESTIVAL Torin Douglas, Director of the Chiswick Book Festival, introduces this year’s line up On the day that Jane Austen appears on the new £10 note in September, marking 200 years since her death, the Chiswick Book Festival will be opening with a host of inspiring women speakers on a wide range of subjects. Austen’s life and work will be celebrated at the Festival's opening event on September 14th in the glorious surroundings of Chiswick House & Gardens, with its curator Dr Esme Whittaker of English Heritage, Paula Byrne (The Genius of Jane Austen) and Helena Kelly (Jane Austen, The Secret Radical). Clare Balding, a tireless champion of women in sport, will introduce The Racehorse That Disappeared, her second brilliant adventure story for children about her aspiring young heroine Charlie Bass. Fragrance entrepreneur Jo Malone (My Story) and athlete and super-adventurer Sarah Outen (Dare To Do) will discuss what it takes to keep going when things don’t quite go to plan. Martine Wright (Unbroken), who competed in the Paralympics after losing her legs in the 7/7 London bombings, tells her own inspiring story in an interview with sports journalist Sue Mott. Somerset Maugham and Costa Prize winning novelist Maggie O'Farrell will talk about her writing and new memoir, I Am, I Am, I Am, with acclaimed author and journalist Cathy Rentzenbrink. And one of history's most powerful women, Queen Victoria, will be the subject of 'Victoria & Abdul – and a Game of Thrones' to coincide with the new film starring Dame Judi Dench, out in September. Shrabani Basu, the author of the book which inspired the film, will be speaking with Deborah Cadbury whose new book, Queen Victoria's Matchmaking, describes how seven of Victoria’s grandchildren came to occupy Europe's thrones. But there is no shortage of men at this year's Chiswick Book Festival! Male authors speaking will include David Baddiel, Oz Clarke, Hunter Davies, Peter Hennessy, Robin Lustig, Tom Mangold, Harry Mount, John O'Farrell, Craig Oliver, Nicholas Crane, Laurence Rees, Marcel Theroux and the BBC's best-paid news broadcaster Jeremy Vine.

Chiswick House DOG SHOW
Jan Preece, Chair of the Chiswick House Dog Show, explains why you should come, even if you’re a cat person You don’t have to own a dog to enjoy the Chiswick House Dog Show. Unlike some of the famous shows, this is a dog show which doesn’t take itself too seriously. You can tell from the classes – Naughtiest Dog, Prettiest Bitch, My Dog’s got Talent, Best Veteran, to name a few – that this show is all about having fun. Nor is it exclusive; this is one dog show where being a pedigree won’t get you anywhere. All dogs are welcome and it costs just £3 to enter your dog into one of the classes. Chiswick House Dog Show is an annual event, now in its 13th year this year, run by local volunteers for the enjoyment of the whole community. It’s also an opportunity for all the dog walkers who regularly use the beautiful, award-winning grounds of Chiswick House (and there are many) to give something back, as this fun day out for all the family raises money to maintain the gardens – a wonderful, historic oasis in West London available to all for free. This year’s show has as its theme the Dog Detective (it being 115 years since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles and 135 years since the first Sherlock

Should you be looking for a dog of your own, the Dogs Trust will be holding a re-homing parade for those wannabe dog-owners looking for a new best friend. Milo, the golden retriever pictured left, found a loving home this way last year. Among the stalls you will find an array of dog related consumables – pet portraits, cards, treats and every form of dog accessory imaginable – as well as a barbecue, beer and wine bars, Italian ice creams, aromatic coffee, cocktails, freshly cooked pizzas and fresh cooked churros. THROUGH THE PORTHOLE Kristina Fearnley of Chiswick Pier Trust describes the pleasures and perils of houseboat living on the Thames It’s hard to believe, but over a thousand people live afloat on the Thames between Teddington Lock and the Thames Barrier. To the outsider these floating villages look like an idyllic and affordable alternative to the over-heated London housing market. But while the great views of the river, the sense of community and the closeness to nature are genuine positives, it’s not always plain sailing and it is seldom cheap. As part of this year’s TideFest festival Chiswick Pier Trust is hosting a doublebill presentation, a film followed by a talk on the pleasures and perils of houseboat living on the Thames. Life Afloat
‘Life Afloat’ is a 55 minute film about houseboat residents, among them parents talking about what
it’s like bringing up children on a houseboat and actress Imogen Stubbs, who recounts having to swim past submerged cars and post boxes to get to shore. The film looks at how tidal life for these communities has changed over time and the threat posed to them today by river-side property development. The essential checklist for buying a houseboat
After the film you can hear a talk by Dr Hilary Pereira of the River Thames Society, on the do's and don'ts of buying a houseboat. Hilary, who has herself lived afloat for 45 years, says “buying a houseboat on the Thames is a high-risk venture in an increasingly expensive yet unregulated market”. For example, did you know that houseboats don’t have title deeds? Or that any outstanding loans are automatically carried forward with the boat? Then there are the tricky issues of securing moorings and utilities. “Residential boats without a mooring can have little and sometimes negative value and so go downhill fast.” she says.

And how do you actually make sure the boat is fit-for-purpose? Do you want a ‘flat-a-float’ or a fully mobile vessel? Hilary’s years of houseboat living mean she’s seen and heard a lot of disaster stories and navigated a lot of these issues for herself. “There is little legal protection for the boat dweller in this unregulated market and lots of profit for those happy to exploit the gullible” she says. “Do not get caught out!” If you’ve ever toyed with the idea of buying a houseboat, Hilary’s checklist is essential reading. Life Afloat is at 1.45, Hilary’s talk at 3.00pm on Sunday 10th September at Pier House, Corney Reach, Chiswick W4 2UG

Ballet
FOR ALL
By Emma Silverthorn Too often ballet is seen as the preserve of little girls, or talented stick-thin young people who are focused on becoming professional dancers. Ballet4 Life is determinedly not that. The classes are predominantly for adults and range from beginners to experienced dancers with special classes for those of us who have limited movement. Its founder Donna Schoenherr was a professional dancer at an international level before settling in west London and setting up her company Ballet4Life. She is on a mission to bring the joy of dance and its physical and mental benefits to all.
Donna is a New Yorker. Starting out with the Festival Ballet of New York, she did her formative training at the prestigious Botsford School in Rochester, where she trained in classical ballet technique, pointe, ballet mime, folk dance and advanced ballroom dance. She went on to dance with the Cleveland Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Michael Mao Dance Co where she was proud to be an integral part of two dance works that were made in collaboration with sight impaired dance artists; groundbreaking works which toured the country. Setting up Ballet4LIfe
Donna went on to train, dance, choreograph and teach across the globe, touring the United States, Mexico and Europe before settling in her chosen home of west London where she has lived for the past twenty years. Ballet4Life, which she set up in 2004, was one of the first organisations to provide adult learners in London with comprehensive programmes of high-quality ballet and dance courses. The B4L class line-up includes pointe, masterclasses, contemporary dance, beginner courses, barre and 50+ ballet classes; which have proven especially popular, making many a childhood ballet dream come true for Chiswick locals! In 2015 she launched Move into Wellbeing®, a dance programme for people living with Parkinson's and other mobility restrictions. Move into Wellbeing® was inspired by Donna’s

father who lived with Parkinson’s for thirty years and who she saw benefit hugely from music and movementbased therapy. Move into Wellbeing® was pleased to receive funding from One You Hounslow last year and thrilled to receive full registered charity status earlier this year. Ballet4Life has open days on 2nd & 9th September with FREE classes for the local community to try out these inspirational and inclusive dance classes.

MEMBER NEWS London’s Best Dressed Waiters When you think of hotel uniforms what comes to mind maybe is black and white suits and blouses in easy-to-clean viscose and cotton. Well think again. Fashionizer, the uniform designers based in south Acton, have just won an industry award for their uniforms made out of chiffon, silk and velvet, to match the opulent décor of the new boutique hotel ‘L’Oscar’ for which they are intended.
Fashionizer Director Debbie Leon
The central London hotel hasn’t opened yet, so the designs are still under wraps, but they won the award at the Professional Clothing Awards 2017 for Best Managed Contract for a Boutique Hotel because of their unconventional approach to uniform. ‘Staff are not defined by their job role or place in the hierarchy, instead they choose from a collection of garments’.
Award-winning Ned hotel uniforms
Their latest coup is the Ned, a 252-room hotel near Bank station which boasts nine restaurants and a rooftop pool. This lovely old building used to be the Midland Bank and is famous for its luxurious Art Deco interior. Fashionizer’s bespoke uniforms can be seen from the rooftop pool to basement bar, modelled by door staff, front-of-house and housekeeping as well as waiters and bar staff. At the launch of the high-profile hotel, Fashionizer’s uniforms attracted praise for their style and originality. According to the London Evening Standard, “The rooftop bar staff ’s natty cardigans make them the best-dressed waiters in town.”
Four Seasons Hotel, Dubai
Director Debbie Leon leads her creative team of designers providing uniforms for the hospitality sector all round the world. Sales and marketing manager Dorota Ziolkowska says the firm, which has been producing quality uniforms for 20 years, now sells to more than 100 countries. Their speciality is arty boutique hotels and exclusive five star hotels, among them the Four Seasons in Dubai, the Merrion in Dublin and the Connaught in Mayfair.

MEMBER NEWS Irish businessman makes Polish film
Daniel MacAuliffe’s latest venture is a film about a Polish DJ Daniel MacAuliffe is the kind of businessman you’d say had fingers in many pies. Founder and Managing Director of Class 1 Personnel, a recruiting agency based in Hounslow and Hammersmith, he also has a number of other businesses including Wild about Roofs, a firm which makes eco-friendly roof gardens, Easy Fix, a property maintenance company and a race horse stables in Ireland. Project London Production
Such a portfolio is not for the faint-hearted, but Daniel loves a challenge and his latest venture is certainly that. “I have many Polish friends” he says. Through talking to them the idea of showing Polish films in England and Ireland emerged and Project London Production was born. For the past few years he and his co-directors have gone to the Polish film festival, selected the best films and signed up the rights to show them here. ‘Walesa. Man of Hope’, a biopic of the Gdansk shipyard electrician who founded Solidarity, the first independent trade union in the Soviet bloc, who galvanised his fellow workers to fight for democracy and went on to become President, is the most notable. Shown in 30 cinemas in England and nine
in Ireland, the films are dubbed in English and accessible to those who have Polish and those who have English as their first language. A small step to becoming a film producer
The next step was obvious: “Let’s make movies of our own” he said. They settled on the story of a Polish woman who comes to the UK and wants to be a DJ. Filmed in Poland, Ibiza and London, they’re hoping that it will be a critical success and will be seen by wider audiences than just the Polish diaspora. Made for a modest one million pound budget, the dialogue is 60 – 70% in English and stars wellknown Polish actress Maira Hirsh. They’ve booked 320 cinemas in Poland to show it when it’s released in October and they’re hoping two million people will see it in the first five weeks. The original music for the soundtrack will be released in September. Daniel has been a little shocked at the film industry’s notorious ability to burn banknotes. ”When it’s your own money” he says “you have to keep the lid on it”. So will he do it again? “We’ll see how this one goes”.

MEMBER NEWS Large new park, underground warehousing and 2,500 new jobs for West London A plan to extract gravel from beneath the surface of 110 acres of disused land in Cranford and Heston and build up to 177,500 square metres of underground warehouse space in the resulting cavity has been approved by Hounslow Council. The initial plans by landowner Formal Investments were rejected in April 2015 on the grounds that they involved unsuitable development of green belt land and the associated traffic and noise would disturb local residents, but the revised plans have met with 95% approval during public consultation and were passed unanimously by councillors on Hounslow’s planning committee on 6th July.
The plan represents a unique and visionary engineering solution which will provide warehousing for Heathrow, some 2,500 new jobs and a large new public park on top with full size grass and all-weather football pitches, hockey and cricket pitches and a variety of other facilities alongside fields and tree-lined paths for walking, running and cycling. The park will be the largest new park to be created in west London for more than 100 years. Formal Investments director Nicholas King said: “It is hugely exciting to know these ambitious and visionary plans, overwhelmingly supported by local residents, have taken a massive step towards going ahead.
Visionary engineering solution
“We have worked hard with Hounslow’s planners and councillors to get the proposals right, so that we can provide a local economic boost and give the people of Hounslow a tremendous legacy in the form of a new public park free for all to enjoy." Local people in favour
David Blackett, chairman of the Heston Residents Association, commented: “This project, strongly supported by residents, will provide the local community with a new landscaped public park with attractive amenities, replacing an area of former farmland which has suffered the ravages of vandalism and anti-social behaviour for some 20 years”. The area, known as at Rectory Farm, hasn’t been farmed since 1996. Work on the site alongside The Parkway (A312) and Bath Road (A4) is expected to begin in 2019 with the first area of the park opening in 2020 and the first underground warehouse space is expected to be available for businesses to use from 2022. The whole project is expected to take 15 years to extract the minerals, construct the warehouses and landscape the park. The Rectory Farm project has been devised by a team of world-class consultants – including architect Carmody Groarke, development expert DP9, landscape architect VOGT, engineer ARUP and the recently added property and construction consultancy Gleeds.
