Artist Henrietta Parsons
Is displaying her work at the Chiswick Cinema from 22nd May – 25th June
“I am a garden designer by profession, but I would have liked to have gone to art school and spent my whole life as an artist. I started making pictures fifteen years ago, after joining a painting group led by Anthea Craigmyle in Chiswick Mall. I experiment with different styles, painting in various media on canvas, board, paper and wood. During lockdown, I found myself separated from my art supplies, and I started to make collage pictures, first using magazines and then painting my own paper (usually re-using packaging or paper bags) in an uneven way, often with different colours on the same sheet, to create varying effects with the colour intensity or shade . I love the random and serendipitous nature of using painted paper in this way - never quite knowing what colours or patterns will appear in my ‘shape’ until it is cut.
My subject matter is varied. I started out painting still life; flowers have always been central to my world. I moved on to painting interiors, sometimes from life but increasingly from my own imagination, and also to painting abstract forms.
I sometimes get questioned about why I paint in so many different ways and I suppose that not having a single ‘voice’ is confusing for people looking at my work. But I am glad not to be constrained to one style, so that I can respond to my current mood and just allow the work to take the form it wants to in my own mind.
I frame my own work, often using recycled frames to keep costs down and for environmental reasons. Each frame therefore has its own character.”

Les McCallum brings us his regular nature update for Summer in West London (the up and down bird)
Recently a friend returning from a holiday abroad ask me “why don’t we have lovely, coloured birds in the UK?” I promptly told her that we have a gem of a bird in the kingfisher with its electric blue and bright orange plumage.
Other colourful British birds include bullfinch, woodpeckers, great tit, blue tit, redstart, goldfinch, and a bird that to me is an absolute treat to watch, the nuthatch. Not quite the best name for this bird, however, a better name would be ‘Nut Hacker.’
After some thorough research, I found over 13 names from around the UK describing it. These being ‘Mud stopper’ from Southern England and ‘Nut Jobber’ from Somerset (‘job’ in old English means to peck or stab).
But why Mud-stopper?
The Nuthatch nests in holes and to prevent starlings or other unwelcome visitors such as Weasels from entering the nest, this bird collects damp mud and plasters the hole so that it is a tight squeeze for both birds when the mud dries hard. Nuthatches lay 5 to 8 eggs which are laid in a nest made of bark, dry leaves, and moss. They do occasionally nest in garden nest boxes and even plaster the entrance hole. I find this bird striking with its blue grey back, pale orange chest and a black eye stripe running through white cheeks like a mask, smaller than a blackbird but bigger than a house sparrow.
Male and females are almost identical with only the slightest difference in the lighter colour of the female’s flanks. A resident bird that can be found in deciduous woodland and parks, the only bird in the UK that can climb up a tree trunk and then move
headfirst down the trunk looking for insects and snails. The tree creeper, which is about the same size creeps up tree trunks and flies down to the base of another tree trunk and then works its way up the trunk.
In winter, the Nuthatch feeds on nuts, acorns, beech mast plus peanuts and sunflower seeds that have been put out in garden feeders. Cracking open hazelnuts is no problem with its strong sharp bill, the nuthatch will push the nut into a crack in the bark and hack away until the shell breaks. In autumn when there is a surplus of food, some will be cached and wedged into the bark, which is then covered with moss to be eaten when food is hard to come by.
The best place to find this bird locally is in Kew gardens on the bird feeders near the charcoal burner.

The Mindfulness Practice of Calligraphy
I’m Laura Edralin, a calligraphy artist and teacher based in West London.
After being signed off work with stress and anxiety in 2017, I discovered calligraphy as a creative outlet to support my mental wellbeing, and soon became fascinated with the psychological impact brush pen calligraphy can have as a mindfulness practice alongside learning the beautiful art form.
I now run my business, Laura Letters Life, and I am passionate about bringing together the creative tools and techniques I have learned practising calligraphy, to share with others in an accessible way.
I particularly love sharing ways to help people support their wellbeing and mental health using creativity and mindfulness, as I have done, offering a space to step away from the busyness of life by getting creative and dropping into a calming flow state - with just a pen!
Sometimes it’s working with people to bring a bit of balance, slowing down, reframing perfectionism - or simply having fun learning a new skill.
My public workshops are hosted around west London, from Mindful Calligraphy Workshops to Brush Calligraphy and Bottomless Lunches, and are for any creative level.
I run a monthly online Mindful Calligraphy Club too welcoming people looking for that regular practice, and sharing their creative progress (and favourite new pens!) together.
I deliver workshops and sessions for companies as well, for organisations who are looking to bring creative, mindful activities into the workplace, whether as part of their social calendar, or weaved into the wellbeing programme.
Aside from teaching, I also work with companies to create calligraphy for dinners, PR events, brand activations, product launches, and live calligraphy at special events too.
Please come and say hello on Instagram, explore my website, or get in touch with me by email.

Vindication Swim
Pioneering swimmer, Mercedes Gleitze, returns to London with new film almost a century after incredible endurance swims.
The celebrated biopic Vindication Swim will premiere digitally on the 10th of June, delving into the remarkable life of Mercedes Gleitze, the first British woman to conquer the English Channel in 1927. Written and directed by Elliott Hasler, the film portrays Mercedes’ courageous journey through the icy waters and societal constraints of 1920s England, as she defends her record against a rival claimant.
Starring Kirsten Callaghan in an award-winning debut as Mercedes, alongside John Locke (Poor Things), James Wilby (Maurice), and Douglas Hodge (Joker), Vindication Swim, hailed by critics as “a truly
epic independent film on a scale never seen before”, captures the essence of Gleitze’s resilience and determination.
Mercedes’ legacy extends beyond the English Channel, with ground breaking swims worldwide, including the Straits of Gibraltar and the distance between Robben Island and Cape Town. In London, she set records with historic swims along the Thames, traversing an astonishing 120 miles from Westminster Bridge all the way down the Thames to Folkestone.

Public Art Trail
From Hogarth to Yeats
Chiswick residents and local organisations have spearheaded a thriving array of public art initiatives. You can discover four installations on Turnham Green Terrace, traveling north from Chiswick High Road to St Michael & All Angels Church, which are testament to the community’s creative spirit and collaborative efforts.
1. Hogarth’s Statue
Situated on the southern side of Chiswick High Road, opposite Turnham Green Terrace, stands a statue crafted by Jim Mathieson. This remarkable piece was revealed to the public on October 23, 2001, in a ceremony led by Ian Hislop, the editor of Private Eye, with assistance from David Hockney, the patron of the statue appeal. Notably, the unveiling of the pug dog at Hogarth’s feet, a charming addition to the statue, was conducted by a student from William Hogarth School. The scheme received contributions from both individuals and local businesses. Supporters include Hogarth Health Club, the developers of Chiswick Park, and Sainsbury’s Local. Moreover, the initiative garnered additional support through two celebrations held at Chiswick Town Hall, commemorating Hogarth’s birthday with food and drink, and entertainment reminiscent of the 18th century.
2. W4th Plinth
Located on the TfL brick wall of the railway embankment, south of Turnham Green tube station, lies the W4th Plinth, an innovative art project curated by Abundance London. Every six months, this project transforms the large image on the brick wall, presenting an exhilarating artwork selected by
Abundance and voted on by the community. The latest addition, unveiled on January 23rd, 2024, is “Sonic Serenity: Chiswick Bridge and The Infinite” by Giovanna Iorio.
3. Chiswick Timeline:
A History in Art and Maps
Beneath the bridges near Turnham Green tube station lies “The Timeline,” a remarkable creation featuring 16 expansive maps spanning from 1592 to the present day. These maps are adorned with works of art by esteemed artists showcasing local landmarks. Among the contributors are renowned figures such as William Hogarth, Johan Zoffany, JMW Turner, Camille Pissarro, Sir John Lavery, Eric Ravilious, Mary Fedden, Julian Trevelyan, Alfred Daniels, Marthe Armitage, along with specially commissioned artworks by Sir Peter Blake and Jan Pienkowski.
In 2018, Abundance London spearheaded the design, funding, and implementation of this extraordinary artwork, which found support through crowdfunding efforts by two councils, local businesses, and individual donors. The installation finds its home on a wall belonging to Transport for London, offering residents and visitors alike a captivating journey through Chiswick’s rich history and artistic heritage.
4.
Enwrought
Light:
Sculpture by Conrad Shawcross RA
Standing proudly at the entrance to Bedford Park, just west of St Michael & All Angels Church, lies “Enwrought Light.” This captivating sculpture, unveiled on September 6th, 2022, by poet and former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, is located mere yards from the childhood home of Yeats, marking the gateway to the world’s first garden suburb, renowned for its meticulously preserved Arts & Crafts environment.
Crafted by artist Conrad Shawcross RA, the youngest Royal Academician, this mesmerising sculpture draws inspiration from Yeats’s poignant lines, immortalised in silver on a Purbeck Stone plinth, from his poem “He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven”:
“Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half light.”
Under the guidance of Irish poet Cahal Dallat and the committee of the WB Yeats Bedford Park Artwork Project, the design, funding, and implementation of “Enwrought Light” were meticulously orchestrated. Through crowdfunding efforts fuelled by public donations, the project not only brought the sculpture to life but also facilitated the creation of educational materials, public lectures, a promotional video narrated by Ciarán Hinds, and the development of the Discover Bedford Park with WB Yeats smartphone visitor experience, enriching the cultural landscape for all who venture through this historic enclave.

Evana & Mani Khan- Jungle V.I.P wins E2 Media Business Award 2024
In any industry there are always organisations that stand out from their peers and set the standards that others in their field have to aspire to achieve. First established back in 2014, Jungle V.I.P is an organisation that certainly meets this criteria leading the way when it comes to providing a family hub for parents/ carers and children in Hounslow. Founded by husband and wife duo Evana and Mani Khan, they have made quite a name for themselves over the years establishing a well deserved reputation as one of the rising stars of the industry and if the last few years are any barometer of what the future holds then there are many successful chapters yet to be written in their story.
Evana and Mani both came from a Biology based background. They were initially introduced to running their own business when they went into partnership within the Medical Industry. After having their second child, they chose to sell their share of the business to pursue their own business venture. Having the experience of running a business, they felt more confident in taking that risk and pursuing a business venture rather than returning back to their respective careers. They stumbled across the opportunity to run their own soft play area, having small children they felt it worked perfectly for them and since having been running Jungle V.I.P for 10 years.
The industry leading level of service that Evana and Mani Khan have provided over the years and the truly outstanding community facility that they have created has been nothing short of inspirational. Here at E2 Media we are delighted to give Jungle V.I.P- Evana & Mani Khan our E2 Media Business Award for Husband & Wife Business Partnerships 2024. For those that know Jungle V.I.P the award will come as no surprise and follows on from several awards that they have already picked up over recent years.
Evana and Mani’s journey to success is paved with relentless hard work and unwavering dedication. Through their vision and commitment, they have transformed Jungle V.I.P into a thriving business, offering exceptional services and fostering a fun-filled atmosphere where children can explore, learn, and play. Their hands-on approach and attention to detail ensure that every aspect of the facility is designed to delight both children and parents alike. With a blend of creativity, innovation, and a genuine love for what they do, the owners have built more than just a business, they’ve created a beloved community hub cherished by all who enter its doors.
With all businesses comes their challenges, Evana and Mani pushed through these challenges such as surviving new developments, local competition and Covid-19 pandemic. Evana adds, ‘We are proud to say we have a business which has survived 10 years and feel confident that this is just the beginning!’ Jungle V.I.P is not your typical soft play area; it offers a more intimate and secure setting, giving a ‘home from home’ feel. Evana and Mani offer a more hands on approach to their business and customer service is paramount in everything they do there. Being actively and directly involved in every aspect of their business they feel they can contribute more within the community, be more conscious of pricing and affordability which shows not just about the service they provide but also the ethical way in which they operate.
Evana and Mani have plans to grow their brand in the future, having 10 years experience, they feel they are in a prime position to take it on. They are also looking at more ways to support various community based projects, working alongside local councils & local projects, whether in offering more work experience opportunities or being a venue that can be used for various community/outreach projects. Evana and Mani show no signs of slowing down and we believe that Jungle V.I.P will only continue to grow as a business in the future.
Sam’s Kitchen
FAMOUS WEST LONDON RESTAURATEUR REVIVES OLD CHISWICK BRANCH
Restaurant owner, Sam Harrison, has brought a new Sam’s Kitchen to Chiswick.
Previously, Harrison had opened his first ever restaurant, Sam’s Brassiere, in Chiswick back in 2005, which closed after 10 years of service. During the pandemic, Harrison then returned to Chiswick with Sam’s Larder, a deli style takeaway and cafe in Turnham Green. Harrison has brought the old site back to life, starting with a brunch menu that includes Sam’s Brassiere’s popular breakfast dishes. He told Brentford Nub News: “Our first Sam’s Kitchen opened in Hammersmith last year and has been really well received. People have kindly told me that since we closed the restaurant in Chiswick back in 2015, what was missed was our breakfast and brunch offering and it seemed like a good time to do it again.”
The opening of the new restaurant comes as Harrison unveiled back in November 2023, Sam’s Waterside in Brentford, as part of The Brentford Project. Harrison continued: “I love the idea that people can come and have a great breakfast with us in Chiswick, they can come and have dinner with us in Brentford, they could come and have lunch or dinner in Hammersmith. People can use us for different times of the day and occasions.”
Sam’s Kitchen intends to use fresh produce from Chiswick House in its dishes, with more variation in ingredients expected to come to the restaurant as summer approaches.
The restaurant owner added: “In our Sam’s Kitchen in Hammersmith, there’s a gentleman who comes for breakfast, I reckon, on average, four or five times a week. And that’s quite a compliment.”

Hen Corner
I know that it’s only plants that photosynthesise (gain nourishment from the sunshine), but there is something about summer that certainly brings life. Whether it’s the longer days, the warmth of the sun or the fresh air as we spend more time outside, it’s always good to take time to breathe deeply and appreciate the beauty of nature.
April brings its delights as our honey bees start discovering fresh nectar to feed the growing family within each hive, if you stand near a tree in full blossom listen out for the hum of the workers gathering pollen on their back legs as they visit each bloom. We are watching out for the first asparagus spears, we have a whole bed dedicated to this seasonal delicacy, and when they are as tall as their special knife we cut them out below soil level and the plant starts producing more. I love the freshly cut spears lightly steamed and served with a poached egg
from our hens and hollandaise sauce.
May is the most important month for getting our seedlings in the soil. We should be past any late frosts by now but the baby plants will still need protection from slugs, snails, caterpillars and birds. If the weather is dry, regular watering will give them the best start as they get established. I’ll be keeping an eye on my pure-breed hens as some of them go ‘broody’ this time of year, deciding that they’ve laid enough eggs and are determined to hatch them. No amount of explaining that their attempts are in vain, because we don’t keep boy chickens, can coax them out of the nest box.
June and strawberries were made for each other. Fortunately, I have several varieties growing at the allotment which gives me a nice long season of harvest, but when they are aplenty it’s time to make jam. We are also making cheese

again, this time some new varieties including Halloumi which brings the taste of the Mediterranean to summer suppers al fresco.
We love the seasons here at Hen Corner, each bringing both familiar responsibilities and new opportunities. If you’d like to learn some new skills, or join in our activities, check out our courses - we’d love to meet you!

Bedford Park Festival
The Bedford Park Festival is returning this June! Enjoy two-weeks of arts and community which has taken place early in June for nearly 60 years!
Thousands of people attend each year and this June, they will bring you art, crafts, music, photography, food, drink, talks, gardens and children’s events - in aid of the work of St Michael & All Angels Church and its three chosen charities. The festival kicks off with the Green Days Fete & Craft Fair and continues with a fortnight of arts and community events. At the heart of Green Days is the Bandstand, the focus for live music and other entertainment.
There will be the usual fantastic mix of stalls and entertainment - under-13s 5-a-side football, Children’s Corner, Fancy Dress Parade, ‘Tabard on the Green’ Beer Tent, Refreshments, Bands and choirs, Bric-A-Brac, Win-A-Meal, Tombola, Books, Plants, Cakes, Champagne Lottery, Family Cycle Zone, Electric Vehicle Zone and much more. Plus, Mass on the Green at 10.30 on Sunday.
FOOD & DRINK
You won’t go hungry or thirsty on Green Days! There will be a Beer Tent serving beer, Pimm’s, cider and soft drinks; a Sipsmith stall; a refreshment tent serving lunches, snacks, Fairtrade tea and coffee, delicious cakes, strawberries and cream teas; a BBQ with Macken Brothers burgers and hot dogs; bacon butties, pancakes, salads, sweets and an ice cream van. The Beer Tent this year is again being supplied by The Tabard in Bath Road W4, with a range of beers and other drinks.
STALLS AND FUNFAIR
Activities include fairground rides, skittles, a coconut shy, beat-the-goalie and a children’s
corner. Other stalls sell plants, toys, books, bric-a-brac and more, plus the Sunday Stalls. At the St Michael and All Angels stand, you will find information about the church, the Festival and the charities, as well as festival merchandise for sale.
MAKE EVERY DAY A GREEN DAY
Since 2005, under the slogan ‘Keep Green Days Green’, the Bedford Park Festival has recycled all waste on the Green Days weekend, earning praise from Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth.
The Festival’s campaign urges local people to look beyond the Green Days weekend and ‘Make every day a Green Day’.
The 60th Bedford Park Festival takes place from 7 to 23 June 2024. See full details and buy tickets at www.bedfordparkfestival.org.
