New Surrey Wetlands

Chamber Mead Wetlands, near Ewell opened in April. It will naturally protect the River Hogsmill and ultimately the River Thames from pollution, according to the South East Rivers Trust.

Road run-offs, sewage pipes and storm discharges adversely affect water quality in the area. The trust says the new wetlands will conserve the site’s chalk stream and help the area become a haven for wildlife.

The project is part of a wider partnership between the Rivers Trust and The Coca-Cola Foundation to help clean some of Britain’s most polluted rivers, reduce flood risk, and to create new wetland habitats

in both rural and urban locations across the country, replenishing 1.6 billion litres of water.

Water will flow along the Green Lanes Stream, but instead of running straight into the Hogsmill River, is being diverted through a sediment trap and two wetlands. At the other end, the wetland is connected into the Hogsmill River, downstream of the stepping stones

As they develop, the wetlands will add variety of habitat and amenity benefit to the Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve, as well as improve water quality for a 200-m section of chalk stream.

Handpicked at the peak of ripeness, British tomatoes boast significantly reduced food miles compared to imports. With innovative practices like rainwater irrigation and bumblebee pollination, our British growers continually refine their techniques to align with Mother Nature.

PREHISTORY EXHIBITION

15 JULY TO 31 DECEMBER 2024

Visit Bourne Hall Museum’s exhibition on life in the area during prehistory. Items on display from the Stone Age to the Iron Age telling how folk came to its spring to hunt and drink and how during the Bronze Age the spring became a place where the gods lived, and gifts were thrown in as offerings.

On display will be the bones of an aurochs, a now extinct ancestor of modern cattle. This one died some 3500 years ago and was buried on Epsom Downs. Aurochs survived well into modern times, the last known individual dying in 1627.

The size of the aurochs bulls varied between 155cm and 180cm, depending on the local circumstances. The size of cows was between 135cm and 155cm. Bulls were significantly larger than cows. The body shape of an aurochs was different from many developed cattle breeds today.

BRONZE AGE METAL SMELTING

THURSDAY 25 JULY

12PM AND 2PM

IN BOURNE HALL PARK

The Bronze Age is a key time in the history of Ewell, when the springs took on new meaning as a place where the gods lived, sending bubbling water from their world into this.

The gods had to be kept on side in those uncertain times and gifts were thrown into the spring, including bright bronze axes. The living history display is filled with replica objects from prehistory and James is on-hand (dressed in accurate Bronze Age clothing of course!) to explain the archaeology behind it all.

This display will be especially valuable for children who are studying prehistory in school. James is an accomplished and charismatic television performer, combining down-to-earth language with academic rigour and formidable practical skills. He will be smelting bronze axes in front of you very eye just as they did in the Bronze Age.

CAVE PAINTING

Then by flickering light try to create your own cave painting in their very own ‘caves’.

WOULD THE CHILDREN IN YOUR STREET LIKE TO PLAY OUT?

The children in one street in Epsom have been playing out once a month on a Sunday afternoon in their road since November. The Playing Out sessions have provided an opportunity for the children there to make new friends, irrespective of the schools they attend. Plus, the children have been outdoors, sharing toys, learning new skills and having fun. For the adults too, there has been the chance to get to know their neighbours better, as well as providing an afternoon of play for their families right on their doorstep.

Playing Out sessions are short, resident-led road closures which are held on a regular basis, which can be adapted to suit the residents involved. In the summer they might last three hours, but during the darker, colder months two hours may be enough!

Currently there is an application process to Play Out in Epsom and Ewell (apply to EEBC and search Playing Out.) Surrounding boroughs do not yet have an approved procedure although that does not mean it’s impossible to enjoy the benefits of Playing Out! It might just mean a little extra input.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

Wednesday 28th August

The woods outside Athens are busy

this night. Four young Athenian lovers are lost. Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairy-folk, are quarrelling whilst a group of craftsmen (who also happen to be some not-so-very-talented actors) are meeting in secret to rehearse their play.

With its many parts, Shakespeare’s story of love, mistaken identity and magic has remained popular with audiences across the world.
