From family-installations in the basement packed with funfilled activities for all ages to enjoy, to guided tours around the ‘below stairs’ rooms, visit Osterley this spring for a new Georgian experience.

‘AT YOUR SERVICE’

On until 31 March 2024

Wednesday – Sunday, 11am-3.30pm

Travel back in time and step into the shoes of Osterley’s House servants and guests.

Experience how they lived ‘below stairs’ and discover the mansion’s basement floor with themed and interactive activities for all the family to enjoy. Dress up like a footman along the way (don’t forget to pad out your stockings to make your calves look bigger!), or try your hand at re-creating a Regency hairstyle, or put your culinary skills to the test and create your very own Georgian-inspired menu for the Child family.

This new immersive and playful exhibition brings the

past to life and explores what it’s like to live, and work in the ‘Palace of Palaces’. Moving through the rooms, visitors will discover the upper and lower servants from 1787, not just their roles and status, but their names, clothes, and something of their day-to-day life. Normal admission applies. Free entry for members.

LIFE BELOW STAIRS TOURS

On until 26 February, Wednesday - Sunday

This winter we’ll be heading downstairs to the mansion’s basement floor. Historic rooms, which are usually closed throughout the main season will be exclusively open for visitors throughout until February 26th.

There will be 4 tours per day running between Wednesday – Sunday, starting at 11am, 12pm, 1.15pm and 2.15pm, with each tour lasting an hour.

Designing & Filming Sci-Fi IN WEST LONDON

For almost a century, West London has contributed to the magic behind the stars and behind the scenes of film and television. A vibrant community of workshops and design studios has played a pivotal role in shaping some of the country’s most iconic science fiction films and television shows.

Gunnersbury Park & Museum is hosting a new exhibition titled ‘Set to Stun,’ celebrating the evolution of sci-fi film and television from the 1960s to the present day. The spotlight will be turned onto the talented artisans, artists, and craftspeople of west London who have breathed life into fantastical worlds.

From the brilliance of laser beams, to the intricacies of paranoid androids, from exploring distant planets to facing alien invasions, visitors will immerse

themselves in an interactive showcase. The exhibition will feature sets, costumes, prosthetics, props, and artistic visualizations that have contributed to the brilliance of British sci-fi classics such as Doctor Who, the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Red Dwarf. Bringing the narrative up to the current day, a motion capture interactive will engage attendees in the modern era of sci-fi storytelling.

Designed to cater to both enthusiasts and families, the exhibition promises informative and engaging content. Workshops tailored for both adults and kids will add an extra layer of fun and fascination, making ‘Set to Stun’ an experience that spans generations.

On until 2nd June. No booking required. Tuesday - Sunday: 10am - 4.30pm.

Free entry to the Kitchen Garden in 2024!

Open Thursday to Sunday, from 28 March until 27 October, visitors will be able to explore the 17th century walled garden free of charge in 2024. From asparagus and edible flowers to pumpkins and dahlias, with over 200 varieties of fruit, veg, flowers and herbs, it’s a fantastic way to connect with the seasons. Visit this March and April to enjoy a magnificent display of spring flowers including Narcissus and tulips.

Rosie Fyles, Head of Gardens at Chiswick House & Gardens Trust, said, “Our dedicated gardening team and volunteers pour incredible effort into cultivating this bountiful space, yet the majority of visitors to the grounds have yet to explore this hidden gem. For over 300 years this walled-garden has offered visitors beauty, pleasure and connection and it’s been a personal aim to share this unique space more widely.”

In 2023 the Trust donated over a tonne of nutritious produce harvested from the Kitchen Garden. This translated into over 2600 meals for charities such as

The Felix Project and Surplus to Supper working to address local food poverty.

But the Kitchen Garden is not simply a productive growing space, it is also a crucial community hub and a peaceful haven to escape to. Working to address challenges that are increasingly common across the London Borough of Hounslow, the Trust is partnering with local community groups and schools to address issues such as isolation, loneliness and disconnection from nature.

By making entry to the Kitchen Garden free, the Trust hopes that visitors can not only enjoy what their green-fingered gardeners, volunteers and community groups have achieved, but also the positive impact it is having for the people of Hounslow.

VISIT THE KITCHEN GARDEN, open Thursday-Sunday, 10.30am-3.30pm from 28 March until 27 October 2024.

NEW FOR 2024

People often ask me “What’s your favourite bird?’ Well, that’s a hard one but the long-tailed tit must be high on the list.

Often seen in small flocks or groups of around 10 to 20 birds usually all related with a few helpers.

It is a tiny pink, white and black bird, easily recognised by its long tail as they forage for insects in bushes and trees. It has a fluffy appearance with a tiny triangular bill. They can be found in parks, woodland, and gardens all over the UK and are quite common, in fact they are on the increase compared to many species that are on the decline. It’s in March that nest building begins, with eggs being laid in April. The nest is a work of art and rarely seen by the public as it is so well camouflaged, being constructed in the fork of a tree or in a bush, made from moss, wool, hair and woven together with cobwebs. The nest is bottle shaped with a hole near the top and then lined with up to 2000 feathers. When the nest is complete, it is then covered with lichens making it almost impossible to see. It’s estimated that they will fly about 600 miles collecting all these materials.

LongTailed Tit

Up to 15 eggs are laid inside, and when hatched, the nest becomes rather crowed but the fact that the nest has been made from spiders web, the whole construction will expand to accommodate this increasing size.

The biggest threat comes from crows, magpies and jays, all from the same family. Corvids unfortunately will pull the nest apart and eat the nestlings or eggs if it gets access, this is all part of nature.

Long tailed tits are gregarious and will help feed the young of a breeding pair as the chicks get bigger and hungrier. This lovely little bird can be seen in a wide variety of habitats and recently while at the Peacock tower at WWT London we looked down on a large party searching for food among the reed beds, a wonderful sight.

This appealing little bird has many local and regional names such as, oven bird, feather poke and long tailed muffin - muffin being associated with fluffiness, and my favourite, Jack-in-a-bottle.

SPRING NATURE FEATURE - LONG TAILED TIT 10
Les McCallum brings us his regular nature update for Spring in West London

Introducing your local RSPB Group

If you enjoy birds and other nature and would like to learn more, why not join the RSPB Richmond & Twickenham Local Group?

We have a busy programme of talks, walks and trips throughout the year, appealing to beginners and more seasoned birders alike. Joining the group is also a great way to meet friendly and like-minded people. Run by volunteers, we have over 200 members, based across SouthWest London (not just Richmond and Twickenham).

Our talks are given by a wide range of wildlife experts, and take place bi-monthly, in the afternoon or evening, between September and March at York House, Twickenham, or online.

Upcoming subjects include Europe’s Best Birding Sites, Seabird Nirvana in Yorkshire and Urban Beaver Reintroduction in London.

The group organises regular local bird walks to sites such as Bushy and Richmond Parks and London Wetland Centre, led by experienced birders who are always happy to help those newer to birdwatching. Day trips to destinations further afield are by minibus, car sharing or occasionally coach, enabling

our members to see wonderful birds not normally encountered locally. Examples of recent destinations are WWT Slimbridge, Warnham Nature Reserve near Horsham and the RSPB reserves of Rainham Pulborough. We also periodically run very popular away trips for our members; this year’s programme includes trips to Devon, Yorkshire and Norfolk.

Membership of the group costs just £20 per year, or just £10 for the seven months from 1 February to 31 August (our subscription year starts from 1 September). Benefits include free entrance to all our talks and local walks and access to our trips further afield, as well as a very attractive biannual newsletter. We aim to make a small surplus on our activities, which we pass to the RSPB, so by joining you can support the RSPB with their vital work to protect nature as well as enjoying yourself!

It was first opened by husband and wife duo Evana and Mani Khan back in 2014, they knew they had their work cut out, but with 2 young children of their own, they realised Hounslow needed a smaller more intimate play centre, which is where Jungle VIPs journey first began. Since then the team at Jungle VIP have built an outstanding reputation for cleanliness, professionalism and above all fun. They have had huge success over the years winning a host of awards for their unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional customer service and they show no signs of slowing down.

At E2 Media, we take great pride in acknowledging and celebrating the outstanding achievements of Jungle V.I.P in Hounslow. It is with immense pleasure that we present them with the prestigious Accolade of Achievement for 2023. Jungle V.I.P has consistently demonstrated excellence in providing exceptional entertainment experiences for children and families, fostering a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, and contributing positively to the local community. Their dedication to delivering top-notch service and memorable moments to their customers has not gone unnoticed. This accolade is a testament to their hard work, passion, and commitment, making Jungle V.I.P a shining star in Hounslow’s entertainment scene.

Jungle V.I.P boasts a variety of play zones, each designed to cater to different age groups and interests. From soft play areas for toddlers to challenging obstacle courses for older children, this facility ensures that every child finds their ideal space for play. Play is a vital part of every child’s development. It’s important for Jungle VIP to provide a clean and safe environment for children to play and have fun. For the adults, you can take advantage of their 5 star rated cafe with a great selection of coffees and a wide range of delicious food and drinks. They are open 7 days a week from 9.30am until 5pm Monday to Friday during term time and between 10am until 6pm during weekends and holidays. They are available to book parties for children of all ages up to 10, they take great pride in their unique style of party hosting, interacting with the children. They

have a variety of party packages available suited to your budget and an exclusive VIP hire. They have built up an impressive reputation locally for the quality of their parties and they have given so many local children a fabulous birthday party and magical experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Every Monday and Friday mornings 11am they have Rhymetime entertainment with Marc the Guitarman, creating a funpacked sing along session for all to join in (and bonus is that it is all inclusive in the entry price)

What Evana and Mani have created at Jungle VIP is so much more than just another soft play centre it’s a home-away-from-home environment. The fact that the centre is family run all adds to the intimate charm and feel of the place. They have managed to give Jungle VIP a special feel that is missing in some of the bigger less personal play areas and believe in good old fashioned Customer Service.

So, the next time you’re looking for a place where playtime knows no bounds, venture into the jungle and discover the magic of Jungle V.I.P.

Coronation Street and the Emergence of the North -

THURSDAY 14 MARCH

Dr. Colin Shindler

includes the screenplay for the feature film Buster and the production of television dramas such as Lovejoy and Wish Me Luck. He has written three novels as well as numerous television scripts and radio plays but regards his greatest cultural contribution as choosing the title music for the police series Juliet Bravo. He is currently working on the television adaptation of his novel Hollywood Nazis. His next book is titled Granada Land: Coronation Street and the Emergence of the North 1960-1970.

The start of Coronation Street in December 1960 radically changed the national perception of the North of England. Traditionally the North had been seen as grim, bleak, working class and impoverished. Alternatively, it had been seen as the home of comic characters personified by George Formby and Gracie Fields but in the early 1960s the British film industry “found” the North and the films produced by this discovery included Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, A Taste of Honey, Whistle Down the Wind, A Kind of Loving, This Sporting Life, Billy Liar and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, all made in an astonishing three year period. Without Corrie would there have been Albert Finney or Tom Courtenay?

Dr. Colin Shindler has been lecturing on American and British social and cultural history for over 20 years. He was awarded his PhD at Cambridge University and subsequently lectured on film for their History Faculty exploring its relationship to modern British and American social and cultural history. He has pursued a wide-ranging career as a writer and producer in television, radio and film. His work

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) is arguably the most important Indian artistic figure of the modern era. The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, claimed that he had two gurus: Gandhi and Tagore. A renowned poet, novelist, composer and painter, Tagore is also the only person in history to have written the national anthems for three countries. He became a global sensation when he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, the first non-European to do so. This lecture provides an introduction to

Tagore’s remarkable life and work, including his novels, poetry, songs and paintings. It also explores the role Tagore’s art played in the story of India’s fight for independence.

Dr John Stevens gained his PhD in History from UCL, before going on to teach British Imperial History, Indian History and Bengali Language at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London). His biography of the Indian guru Keshab Chandra Sen – Keshab: Bengal’s Forgotten Prophet - was published by Hurst and Oxford University Press in 2018. He is a regular visitor to India and Bangladesh and has lectured at numerous Indian universities. He also works as a consultant on Indian affairs and teaches the Bengali language to private students. He has appeared many times in the Indian media, and was a guest on BBC Radio Four’s In Our Time, discussing the poet and artist Rabindranath Tagore.

The National Archives IN KEW

The doors of The National Archives’ repositories are opening up to offer you the chance to go behind the scenes on Thursday 15th February and 21st March at 3.30pm. Discover how they keep and maintain the records for future generations and explore some of the hidden gems in the collections.

The National Archives also hosts a range of on-site events. Great Escapes: Remarkable Second World War Captives will be their next exhibition, running from 2nd February until 21st July.

Great Escapes explores the human spirit of hope and resilience during times of captivity, revealing both iconic and under-told stories of prisoners of war and civilian internees during the Second World War. From famous escape attempts such as the escape from Stalag Luft III that we know as “the Great Escape” and British officer Airey Neave’s escape from Colditz

Castle dressed as a German soldier, to remarkable stories of individuals seeking escape through art, music and finding love, the exhibition offers glimpses of the courage and ingenuity that is possible in desperately hard times.

Drawing on The National Archives’ vast collections of wartime era documents and photographs, the exhibition features never previously displayed records from MI9 – a highly secretive British government agency set up to help military personnel evade and escape capture, war office records recently catalogued by volunteers and incredible loans from organisations such as IWM, Tate, Leicester Museum and Art Gallery and Eden Camp Modern History Museum. The exhibition is free to visit and you do not need to book a ticket. The exhibition will be accompanied by a book, Captives: Prisoners of War and Internees 1939:1945 published by The History Press.

Hen CORNER

Whilst you won’t usually find me giving up chocolate (or caffeine, or alcohol) for Lent, something has definitely caught my eye this year and I’m going on a training course to specifically equip me to do it properly. This year, as we prepare for Easter and the new life that it symbolises, I am planning to join a Carbon Fast and commit to reducing my carbon footprint significantly over the coming weeks.

If we want to welcome something new we often need to say goodbye to the old, and spring with its promise of opportunity, is the perfect time to reflect and review, allowing us to embrace the new season with arms open wide. Are there new things that you can do to live more sustainably? Using a washing line instead of a tumble dryer, remembering to take the reusable shopping bag to the supermarket, maybe growing some of your own food this year?

Celebrating the Seasons…

Hopefully we’ll find our almond tree in blossom this year; it’s part of the peach family with beautiful pink flowers and as well as amazing fresh juicy nuts inside their stones, the outer casing of fruit can be used to make jam. A leisurely walk outside, maybe in one of our lovely parks or alongside the river, gives us the perfect preview of what nature has in store. In our garden those first fruits include daffodils and frog spawn, peach blossom and asparagus along with bountiful eggs from the hens and eager honey bees foraging for nectar.

As we prepare to celebrate Easter, we’ve got our ever popular Introduction to Easter Baking course where we’ll be baking Hot Cross Buns, our award winning Easter Apricot Couronne and Lemon Curd Butterfly Cakes complete with homemade fresh lemon curd. For families, we welcome you as always to Easter

at Hen Corner to join in with egg hunts and hugging hens.

I really do love all the seasons, but spring seems to knock at the window and invite us outside to explore - let’s accept and enjoy the sunshine.
