Courtyard Theatre

The Chipstead Players are based at The Courtyard Theatre in Chipstead, Surrey, a beautifully converted stable block situated in the grounds of an old mansion once owned by the Stoddart family and subsequently by Surrey County Council, from whom The Players acquired the freehold of the stables in 1978. Before this, for many years a section of the stables had been leased for storage, with productions taking place primarily at the local village hall, but the grant of a longer and more extensive lease had enabled The Players to create a bar, rehearsal room and space for committee meetings, just in time for their 50th anniversary in 1974.

It was perhaps no surprise that having acquired the freehold, thoughts turned to converting the premises to provide The Players with their own small theatre.

During the early 1980s, plans were drawn up and approved and funds were raised from within the membership to enable the works to start. After many years of hard work, much of it done by the members themselves, the theatre was formally opened with its first production in 1995. Although superficially complete at that time there were parts of the building which still needed work and a generous bequest by a former member a few years later enabled that work to be completed.

after nearly 30 years,

The Players have built a new workshop extension giving them more space to create the sets for which they are rightly renowned. New visitors are regularly amazed at the wealth of talent, expertise, and resources inside the theatre with its raked seating and well-stocked bar. With up to the minute lighting and sound

facilities The Courtyard can rival many professional theatres in the technical quality of their productions and, with the strong creative talent attracted to Chipstead, it is amongst the foremost amateur ‘little theatres’ in the south-east.

Having originally been founded in 1924 as a play-reading society, The Chipstead Players are now celebrating 100 years in existence. With entirely amateur and voluntary participation from a thriving membership spanning all ages, they present 7 plays each year, covering the full range of drama, comedy and musical theatre, including some productions dedicated to their younger talent. With an excellent reputation for the quality of their productions and with a large and loyal group of backstage members they regularly play to full houseswell worth a visit!

The Son by Florian Zeller is a beautifully written, totally absorbing play. Until 2 years ago Nicholas was a happy, smiling boy but he is not coping with his parents’ separation and divorce and is now listless, skipping school and lying.

The resulting disruptive dynamics of family life form the basis of this thought- provoking, mesmerising piece of theatre. Not to be missed!

Twenty-five years before, the Helliwells, the Parkers and the Soppitts were married on the same day by the same parson and they have now gathered to celebrate their silver weddings. These staunch Yorkshire chapel folk have summoned the new organist to reprimand him for courting a local girl but to the dismay of the three couples, the organist delivers bombshell news. Claremont Landscape Garden

GARDEN FRIENDS HALF TERM TRAIL

Saturday 25th May – Sunday 2nd June

They’ve teamed up with local children’s author, Rachel Lawston, to create a garden themed nature trail around Claremont. At this time of year, the garden is bursting with life from the chirping of newborn ducklings and goslings to bees buzzing amongst the flowering Rhododendron. Visit during half term for fun games and activities around the lake that will help inspire and form deeper connections with nature that’s all around us.

GUIDED WALKS

Throughout the year, Claremont’s heritage volunteers, offer guided walks of the garden covering different subjects. There are historical walks where you can learn about some of Claremont’s royal residents, to the history of Claremont through the lens of the famous landscape gardeners that help create it. If nature is more your thing, why not join of one of their

Tuesday tree walks and learn about the different varieties and their special features.

WELLBEING

Join qualified breathing instructor, meditation, and mindfulness coach Nigel Grimes for a morning of a mindful and sensory exploration of Claremont Landscape Garden. Breathe in the fresh air, touch the trees, listen to the sounds of nature, and soak up the views. Taking the time to slow down and immerse yourself in beautiful natural surroundings does wonders for the mind, body, and soul.

The two-and-a-half-hour Forest Bathing session will start pre-opening, giving participants access to the peace and quiet of these special places ahead of the daily visitors. £43 per person including entry.

In partnership with Surrey Sculpture Society, Claremont Landscape Garden will be hosting a new sculpture exhibition this summer running from 8th June to 14th July 2024. With striking vistas and playful architectural features like the grass amphitheatre, serpentine lake and grotto, a walk around the Grade II listed garden has always been a pleasure. The addition of the new sculpture

exhibition, which has been specially curated by Surrey Sculpture Society, will provide an exciting evolution to the garden.

With submissions currently being reviewed, the exhibition is expected to feature over 90 artworks from some of Surrey’s finest artists. All works will be for sale. This is a free event but normal admission applies.

Open Studios Art Trail

IN CHIPSTEAD AND BANSTEAD THIS JUNE

This June, you are invited to visit resident artists working from their studios in Chipstead and Banstead. You can visit from 11am - 5pm on 22-23 June and 29-30 June with an extra solo opening from 6-7 July.

Deborah’s body of work is mostly mixed media, inspired by travels either close to home or further afield. She is an exhibiting artist with Tadworth Art Group, Guildford Art Society and Surrey Hills Plein Air. Her work has been shown with the Society of Women Artists at Mall Galleries, London.

Safe and Well Visits

The Surrey Fire & Rescue Service is a free campaign, designed to provide safer living environments for people in the community who require extra care and support.

Many fires at home start accidentally and can have a devastating impact on the occupants and their possessions. Knowing how to reduce the risk of fire in your home is an important part of living safe and well. The best way to keep safe from fire, is to understand common fire hazards and reduce the risk from them in your home.

As part of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s work within the local community, we offer a service called a ‘Safe and Well visit’. This is a completely free service and is designed at providing safer living environments for people in the community that require extra care and support. Currently, we work closely with Local Authority Teams, Surrey County Council Community Departments, Adult Social Care and associated community scheme providers, in providing person centred risk assessment, fire safety advice and accompanying fire safety resources, such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire retardant bedding / throws etc. Any resource provided by us will be fitted and is completely free of charge.

One of the biggest barriers we face with this service, is that it is unknown by many, or is greeted with scepticism by many members of the community, who we quite rightly tell to be wary of scams.

Safe and Well visits are carried out by Surrey Fire and Rescue Officers, Partnership Officers and in some instances, our volunteers. All our staff carry identification cards and will produce these at the start of the visit.

We will visit you in your home at an arranged time, day or night. The visit is friendly and informal, and there’s no need to tidy up or provide refreshments, we are here to keep you safe.

A Tudor Festival

In 1533 Henry & Gertrude Courtenay invited King Henry VIII for a visit at West Horsley Place. This visit is exceptionally well-documented and with help from partners

Historic Royal Palaces, University of Exeter and Powderham Castle they are recreating it as a unique multi-sensory experience.

Based on new research, the story of the King’s visit to the Courtenays and what life was like at West Horsley Place during this momentous stay will be told. From tasting the King’s feast, to Tudor music, falconry and jousting displays it will be a day out to remember.

Making a difference

to local families in need

The UK is facing its biggest cost of living crisis in decades, the news is full of war, natural disaster, and climate change, and it can all feel very overwhelming. How can you help?

There is something you can do on a very local level, to help people in Surrey who are really struggling. People who are working hard, maybe juggling multiple jobs, but who still have to choose between eating themselves or feeding their children, or between heating and food. The Community Foundation for Surrey can double your donation at the moment thanks to Surrey County Council who have pledged to match donations – so every £5 becomes £10. We are raising as much money as we can to support local Surrey organisations helping local people who are living in poverty.

Just under 1 in 10 Surrey children aged 15 and under are in absolute low-income households – this means their families do not have the minimum amount of income needed to meet their basic living requirements. The vast majority of these children have parents in work – but their wages have not kept pace with rising costs. In Surrey this poverty exists in pockets – across the street from others living in very comfortable circumstances. This means it can become invisible to us.

Through the Tackling Poverty Campaign, CFSurrey

channels donations into grants that directly impact individuals and families across the county, ensuring they have access to the resources they need to stay warm, fed, clean and in suitable accommodation. These grants support a range of essential services, including fuel poverty assistance, provision of warm clothing and blankets, community meal programs, and emergency financial aid for struggling households. Every pound donated goes towards making a tangible difference in the lives of our neighbours, helping to alleviate the immediate hardships they face.

Summer Berries Pavlova

INGREDIENTS

• 4 eggs, or a carton of egg whites

• 250g caster sugar

• 1 tsp white wine vinegar

• 1 tsp cornflour

• 400g strawberries, hulled and halved if large

• 300g raspberries

• 1 tbsp icing sugar

• 150g blueberries

• 300ml whipping cream

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

METHOD

1. Heat the oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment and draw a large circle in pencil round a bowl or dinner plate approximately 25cm to use as your template. Turn the paper over.

2. Separate the eggs. Freeze the yolks for making custard or ice cream at a later date and keep the egg whites.

3. Whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks. Add the sugar, 1 tbsp at a time, whisking between each addition until the mixture is smooth, glossy and thick.

4. Whisk in the vinegar and cornflour together.

5. Put large spoonfuls of meringue on the parchment inside the circle until it is evenly filled.

6. Make a dip in the centre with the back of a spoon and bring up the sides a little. Put the pavlova in the oven and bake for 1 hour. Turn the oven off, leave the door ajar and let the meringue cool completely before removing it.

7. To make the sauce, blend 75g of strawberries and 75g of the raspberries to a purée with the icing sugar, then sieve into a bowl. Softly whip the cream and vanilla together.

8. Top the meringue with the cream, the rest of the fruit, and berry sauce.
