LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the April / May issue of Out & About. Most people would say they liked trees. What’s not to like? But how well do you know your trees? Could you identify the ones on your street? Paul Wood, author of London's Street Trees, thinks a little tree appreciation is in order, especially now that spring is here. p6 Mike Robinson would go further. He’s celebrating not just trees but all that the natural world has to offer with a picnic on Earth Day and he’d like you to come. p16 Sara Ward at Hen Corner is celebrating the first taste of spring with the new season’s asparagus from her garden and fresh eggs from her own hens. She offers a recipe for a homemade Hollandaise sauce to go with them. P9 Phoebe Katis is a shining young talent in the world of Jazz. Larry Pryce, who’s been promoting Jazz for 40 years, thinks she’s a real ‘find’ and she’s performing at a pub near you. p8 Lotte Moore shows that it’s never too late for your talent to be recognised. She started writing in her seventies and at 82 has just watched a play based on her book performed at the theatre. She published ‘Lotte’s War’ two years ago and tours primary schools with her husband Chris explaining what life was like for children during WW 2, bringing ‘history’ to life. p15 Richard Bradbury is an internationally acclaimed, awardwinning photographer who produces a book called ‘Children of London’ every year. The book has pictures of children

He lived in Brentford as a young man and built a house in Twickenham once he’d become successful. The house, Sandycombe Lodge, has recently been refurbished and is open to the public. p23 National Tea Day is on 21st April apparently. Chiswick House is celebrating the national drink with a two-day Festival of Tea. p17 Plenty to enjoy in April and May. Hope you also enjoy reading this issue.

LONDON'S GLORIOUS STREET
Trees
Paul Wood, author of 'London's Street Trees; A Field Guide to the Urban Forest', takes us on a tour
Do you ever wonder about the trees on the street outside your front door? You may be surprised to discover there are over 900,000 street trees in London and over 300 species and varieties are represented. Each of London's 32 boroughs (plus the City) are responsible for looking after these urban trees, and Hounslow boasts more than 11,000 helping make this one of the greenest and most liveable parts of London. So, as the spring arrives, there's no better time to get out and about for a bit of tree appreciation, and here's some local highlights to get you started.
But it is the more exotic species found in this part of the urban forest that may be more surprising. Look out for some of the largest Ginkgoes in London — a tree so ancient, it pre-dates the dinosaurs. Quick Road is good for these and there's even a rare fruit-bearing female to see, but a word of warning, don't get too close to those fruits, they smell like dog poo! Burford Road in Brentford has American Sweetgums, and Osterley is home to an unusual Golden Rain Tree. The specimen right outside the Tube station is an arboreal landmark, displaying beautiful coral pink new leaves in spring, yellow flowers in high summer, glorious autumn foliage and seed lanterns in the winter. There’s at least one tree in the borough playing host to Mistletoe too.
London's Street Trees; A Field Guide to the Urban Forest is published by Safe Haven Books priced at £12.99.
Hounslow council has been planting and managing trees for years, and there's now quite a legacy, from stately London Planes lining streets in Brentford, Isleworth, and Chiswick — Chiswick High Road is particularly good with trees over a century old. Also in Chiswick, take a wander down Dukes Avenue, one of the finest Lime tree boulevards in town, and then there's the Cherry trees on Staveley Road which, rumour has it, were so adored by the Queen Mum she would instruct her chauffeur to drive her down each spring to admire the blossom.

PHOEBE KATIS SINGS “WOMEN OF JAZZ” Larry Pryce presents Jazz at George IV in April and May the much acclaimed singer/songwriter and pianist Phoebe Katis performing on May 24th. Thursday April 26th sees the popular 13-piece Jazz Mondays, the Chiswick based 13-strong band famous for their eight-piece “wall of saxes” fronting a tight, four-piece rhythm section and a dynamic vocalist, whose eclectic and constantly expanding repertoire covers everything from jazz to soul, ska to funk, Dizzy Gillespie to Amy Winehouse. These versatile crowdpleasers have become a regular fixture of Jazz at George IV.
The months of April and May see two marvellous jazz concerts taking place in the Boston Room at George IV in Chiswick High Road with the Jazz Mondays appearing on April 26th and
On Thursday 24th May the huge talent that is Phoebe Katis will be making her debut in the Boston Room. This wonderfully soulful vocalist came to jazz relatively late, during her University years. She instantly fell in love with the singing of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie
Holiday and Etta James whilst also drawing from the soulful natures of Randy Crawford and Carol King and more contemporary jazz singers such as Diana Krall, Melody Gardot and Esperanza Spalding. “Each woman brought something different to my palate and were great influencers on both my vocals and my song writing”, says Phoebe. I asked Phoebe how she approached her writing. “Each song is different. Sometimes I begin with a lyrical idea, or a melodic idea, sometimes a chord sequence. I tend to write my melodies and lyrics together, each informing the other. Structures and references are useful, but the soul of the song has to feel genuine and unforced.” A supremely talented songwriter and performing artist, she combines her own personal interpretation of numbers from some of the great female vocalists with her own stylish songs. “Phoebe Katis Sings Women Of Jazz” promises to be one of the shows of the year.

HEN CORNER Sara Ward shares a few of her favourite things This is the time of year when we can eat like kings with just a couple of fresh ingredients from the garden, it feels so decadent to dine on asparagus and eggs still warm from the sun and the nest box, to have produce not only free from plastic and food miles but sweet and tender as only nature can supply. My absolute favourite treat this time of year is poached eggs and asparagus sitting on toasted sourdough bread, from our micro bakery of course, and topped with an indulgent Hollandaise sauce. Whilst there are many fancy recipes for the sauce, we like to keep things simple here at Hen Corner and try to use as few pieces of equipment as possible, so not to spoil the experience with a pile of washing up! Why not have a go yourself ?
Hollandaise Sauce Ingredients:
1 egg yolk 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar Freshly ground black pepper 200g butter (room temperature) Lemon juice (good squeeze from half a lemon) Salt & pepper to season
Method:
In a heat-proof bowl, whisk the egg yolk with the vinegar and a few twists of black pepper — this forms the basic emulsion. Place the bowl over a simmering pan of water, make sure the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water and continue to whisk the contents. Add the butter, a teaspoon at a time, whisking until it dissolves, then adding another until all is incorporated. Finish with a generous squeeze of lemon juice and season with the salt and pepper. Delicious served with asparagus and poached egg, fish, eggs benedict, stir in tarragon and serve with steak… the list goes on! THE RETURN OF COLOUR! Head Gardener at Osterley Park on bringing colour to a spring garden There are many ways of brightening your garden and providing colour through the long, dark days of winter and through into spring and early summer. One is to place pots of plants and bulbs in prominent places, such as next to seats or on paved areas, where they can be best seen. We plan our displays well in advance by buying in bulbs from our supplier and growing on other specimens that will provide a good foil for the plants when they bloom — small evergreen shrubs or ornamental grass for example. In the picture you can see a lovely early daffodil Narcissus ‘February Gold’ along with some yellow polyanthus and an ornamental grass Stipa tenuissima. One of the main reasons that we plant nearly all of our bulbs in pots is to try and combat squirrel damage! These cute little critters would have a field day each autumn if we let them get at our newly planted bulbs, so we have a special frame that is covered with chicken wire in which to place the many clay pots. That foils them! Once the bulbs have grown roots they are more difficult to dig out and this is when we place them around the garden in the late winter/early spring.

For a wonderful and fresh looking colour scheme tulips are a great choice and if planted thickly in a pot will need no staking and can be planted in your garden after they have finished flowering. Of course you do not have to limit your bulb planting to pots, we have thousands of naturalised specimens in long grass and at the base of trees where they will happily increase year on year without any input from us, quietly doing their thing and popping up to remind us that they are there.

CHILDREN OF LONDON Would you like your child to appear in a book chronicling the lives of London children? ‘Children of London’ is a unique project by photographer Richard Bradbury. Each year he takes pictures of hundreds of children. The portraits, which create a unique record for future generations of Londoners, are published yearly in a limited edition of 500 stylishly bound hardback copies, featuring images of up to 200 children. The first three copies are presented to Her Majesty the Queen, the Prime Minister and the Mayor of London; the rest are sold or auctioned in aid of Great Ormond St hospital appeal. So far he has raised £64,551.
He is currently looking for children to photograph for the 2018 edition, which will be published in December. He’s searching for children aged 0–12 years, representative of all walks of life, from all backgrounds, in every London borough. “All creeds, colours and ethnicities are welcome and don’t forget to include siblings” he says. The front cover of the first book was his own daughter Camille, who is now 19 (pictured). He likes to photograph the children in a background which has special meaning for them. All he asks of parents is that they make a donation of at least £50 to the charity. Richard is regarded as one of the world’s top advertising / editorial photographers. Currently President of the Master Photographers Association, he has won a multitude of top industry awards including a recent award from Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) in the US and the Association of Photographers (AOP) Editorial Photographer of the Year award last year. His advertising clients include Tesco, NatWest, Sony Playstation and Mars. His magazine front covers include Time magazine in New York and Time Out in London. LOTTE’S WAR Lotte Moore brings ‘history’ to life with her personal account of what life was like as a child during WW2 Lotte Moore is a woman on a mission. At 82, in the time she has left to her she wants to tell as many primary school children as possible about her experience as a child during the Second World War and the bravery and sacrifice of the wartime generation. Her book ‘Lotte’s War’, first published in 2016, has been adapted as a theatre production, shown at the Tabard theatre in Chiswick in March 2018, and forms the basis of a presentation she does for primary school children with her husband Chris. Together they have already appeared at some 80 schools so far. They lay out the weekly ration of one egg, 4oz sweets, 2oz butter, 12d worth of meat (one chop or its equivalent), one piece of bacon, one piece of cheese and the delights of tinned food such as Tapioca, and try and explain what it was like to live on rations. They take the children back to a time before fish fingers and burgers, before mobiles, computers and television to a time when most people didn’t own a fridge and entertainment meant books or music. They show them a gas mask and Chris does a neat rendition of the sound of a doodlebug. They also show them her grandfather’s hip flask, which saved his life in the First World War. The book is a very simply written, factual yet personal account divided up into five sections: In Before the Bombs she describes an idyllic country childhood spent playing in fields, chasing the donkey out of the living room for eating candles and listening to stories in front of a log fire. The Barrage Balloons Appear and Leaving Home have her being taken to a boarding school in Hertfordshire at the age of five

without understanding why and crying herself to sleep in the dormitory. Living Through the War sees her coming back to London, seeing bombed houses, experiencing the blackout and air raids, beginning to understand what ‘war’ meant. In The Fighting Comes To An End she says: ‘My best memory was running to Dad as he walked through the gate without his uniform as I then know the war was over and he would be staying home.’ It’s a great book for explaining the Second World War to a child, especially with Lotte retelling the tale in person. Lotte’s War, published by Urbane Publications, is available from Waterstones and online from Amazon.

Earth DAY
Michael Robinson invites you to join him on Turnham Green
“Earth Day” (www.earthday.org) is annual event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth Day events started in the US in 1970 and now take place in more than 193 countries. Hounslow Cycling Campaign, Friends of Turnham Green and Abundance London are teaming up to organise an “Earth Day Picnic” on Turnham Green from 12 noon to 2pm, Sunday 22 April. When we say “organise”, in reality all we mean is we’ve done the paperwork to reserve a spot on the green for that day and we are inviting people along for a picnic.
Of course, we realise we are tempting fate by announcing a picnic in April and the Great British weather may intervene, so come prepared.
For more about the issue of plastic pollution and how to help reduce it, go to www.earthday.org/yourjourney2018
There will be no food stalls, tents or organised entertainment, people will just be coming with their own food and picnic accessories and taking everything away afterwards. The theme of this year’s Earth Day is “end plastic pollution” so the challenge is not to use cling film, plastic bags, plastic wrapping or plastic food containers to bring your food. Expect tuts of disapproval from your fellow picnickers if you fail in this endeavour! We are asking that you get there by walking, cycling or public transport. If you’re thinking of bringing your bike, you may be interested in the guided bike ride being organised by Hounslow Cycling Campaign (details will be on hounslowcycling.org/earthday2018). But be advised that there’s no cycling allowed on the green itself. Earth Day picnics are an established event in North America, so much so that there are special websites devoted to Earth Day picnic suggestions to save you from the prospect of soggy sandwiches, disintegrating sausage rolls and squashed Scotch eggs. Recipes for Mini Chicken Caesar Salad Cups, Nacho Kale Chips and BLT bites are among the Earth Day snacks featured at geniuskitchen.com for example.

NATIONAL TEA DAY Some of the oldest and most valuable tea drinking accoutrements on show at Chiswick House Some of the pieces from the world’s largest and most valuable collection of historic teaware is to go on show to the public for the first time at Chiswick House on 21 – 22 April. Chiswick House and Gardens are playing host to a Festival of Tea on what is apparently National Tea Day on the Saturday and for the rest of the weekend. The organisers say they will have more than 500 different types of tea available to try (no you can’t just ask for ‘builders’!) As well as tea tasting and mixology classes the Fes-tea-val (their gag, not mine! Ed) offers lessons in the etiquette of afternoon tea and celebrity baking masterclasses with ‘Queen of Couture Cakes’ Mitch Turner, founder of Little Venice Cake Company. If you’re wondering what ‘teaware’ means, it’s basically tea pots, but also tea bowls from China, tea caddies, tea chests, tea cups, saucers, spoons and glasses and Russian samovars. The Chitra Collection is owned by the N Sethia Foundation, put together by the founder of Newby teas, philanthropist Nirmal Sethia and named after his late wife. Among the collection are historic items from China, Japan, India, Russia, England, continental Europe and America. Usually kept in a vault and available only for private view, the whole collection has almost 1,700 objects dating back to the Chinese Song Dynasty (960 – 1279). Notable pieces include items by Fabergé, Tiffany, Meissen, Sèvres and Wedgwood, President Roosevelt’s tea caddy and a teapot that was owned by Admiral Lord Nelson. Some are intricate and exquisitely beautiful; others, including Nelson’s teapot, strictly functional. The most valuable item in the collection, a teapot completely covered with diamonds and rubies, will not be on show. The thirty or so pieces which will be, will chart the history of tea showing how it played a central role in culture and society as a medicinal drink, a focus for hospitality, a politically significant tool of empire and a symbol of national identity. The Tea Festival is at Chiswick House, London W4, on 21st & 22nd April. Opening hours 10.00am – 5.30pm.

Kids can also see live chicks hatching, enjoy Easter crafts and follow Easter trails — and our Waterworks Railway steam engine, Thomas Wicksteed, will be offering unlimited free rides at weekends and on Wednesdays. Our Easter celebrations start with a long weekend of steamtastic fun at our Grand Easter Weekend Steam Up, when our unique collection of rotative and Cornish beam waterpumping engines will be in steam, as well as our Waterworks Railway and Victorian steam fire engine.

HARE & HOUNDS
A COUNTRY PUB IN THE
'Burbs
Sunday lunch, good steak, decent beer, nice peaceful green surroundings, safe play area for the kids. Sounds like a country pub. Tastes like a country pub. But actually you don’t have to drive an hour to get there and get stuck in weekend returning traffic on the way back… It’s what editors of glossy travel mags like to call a ‘hidden gem’. The Hare & Hounds pub in Osterley is a country pub transported to the middle of the London suburbs. Opposite the beautifully landscaped gardens of the National Trust’s Osterley Park, it’s tucked away from the noise and fumes of London, just three mini roundabouts away from Gillette Corner on the Great West Rd. So near and yet so far. Perfect for a family occasion. The pub’s friendly host Chris Bosse offers a premium grill and Fullers beer and a large beer garden with an outside barbecue at weekends, where now that summer’s on its way you can keep one eye on the kids in the play area while savouring a pint. He is proud of the way his staff looks after customers and particularly recommends the Sunday roast.

JMW TURNER, LANDSCAPE PAINTER — AND ARCHITECT Lucinda MacPherson visits the artist’s recently refurbished house in Twickenham JMW Turner, arguably England’s greatest landscape painter and still one of the most popular (his Fighting Temeraire was voted the nation’s favourite painting in a BBC Radio 4 poll as recently as 2005), once said that if he could have had his time again he’d have been an architect, not a painter. Luckily for us he only discovered this later in life, but you can see the results of his labours as an architect in the recently refurbished Sandycombe Lodge, the home he built for himself and his father in Twickenham. Turner loved the River Thames. As a young man he lived in Brentford with his uncle and he’s best known for his many pictures of the river. At the time he built Sandycombe Lodge, now in a suburban street, it would have been a rural retreat with a clear view of the river. His father, also William, retired from his barber’s trade in Covent Garden, took charge of household matters and enjoyed tending to the large garden, which his son teasingly referred to as ‘farming’.
L@outandabout_mag
The interior of Sandycombe echoes the work of Turner’s close friend the architect Sir John Soane, who undoubtedly influenced and perhaps advised Turner, particularly in the series of arches in the small hall and corridor and the elegantly sweeping stair which is top-lit with glass motifs similar to those used by Soane in his London house. During the £2.4m restoration project there have been numerous unexpected discoveries including a delicate blue-grey marbling, now recreated in this part of the house, revealed by paint analysis. In 1826, grabbing the chance for travel in Europe, Turner sold the house and moved Old William, whose health was now failing, to his London home in Marylebone. Over the next 120 years, Sandycombe Lodge had many owners, the last one being a Professor Harold Livermore who, when he died in 2010, bequeathed it to Turner’s House Trust, which he had set up to preserve the house as a ‘monument to Turner in Twickenham’.
www.outandabout.media
It is now Turner’s only home open to the public and rewards visitors with a unique perspective on the artist who is himself undergoing something of a revival, with Mike Leigh’s recent film Mr Turner, starring Timothy Spall, and the imminent publication of the new £20 note which will bear the artist’s portrait. Open Wednesday–Sunday: 10am– 1pm: Self-guided visits, and 1–4pm: Guided Tours. Admission: Adult – £6, Child (5-15yrs) – £3, Under 5’s – Free, Family Ticket (2 adults & 2 children) – £15.
