EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome It’s festival time in Brentford and Chiswick. Brentford Festival has now become a major event, with some 10,000 people expected in Blondin Park on Sunday 1st September. Tom Keane & Paul Hayes of ‘Cash in the Attic’ will be there. P8

Your kids will already have had the opportunity to learn how to be auctioneers at Chiswick Auctions Summer Festival, 10th – 14th August, so maybe they’ll be able to teach the celebs a thing or two. P6. Chiswick Book Festival has a great line-up of authors, including children’s author Cressida Cowell, crime writer Mark Billingham and politician Ken Livingstone. 12th – 16th September. P18 The Cookbook festival returns, after the huge success of the first one last year. Book talks where you can taste the recipes – a winning combination. P20. This year the Cookbook festival organisers have joined forces with Abundance London to close Turnham Green Terrace to traffic for the day on Sunday 15th September and throw a street party to celebrate the rejuvenation of the ‘piazza’. P23. Tidefest returns to Strand on the Green on Sunday 8th September. This Family Festival of the River gives you a change to take part in a variety of river-related activities for free or very cheaply (£2-£3). P17 Fish are also high on the agenda of TV chef Jo Pratt who has chosen one of the recipes from her new book, The Flexible Pescatarian, to share with us. P22. This issue features two art exhibitions. Chiswick In Pictures shows the work of 20 artists who live locally, being shown at the Clayton Hotel Chiswick from 2nd September – 9th November. P11

Jazz at George IV in Chiswick has a strong line-up for the autumn, starting with Dom Pipkin’s ‘Smokin’ Boogie, Bad Boys, Bourbon & The Big Easy’ on Thursday 5th September. P14 The hugely popular Chiswick Dog Show takes place on 22nd September, this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in its fancy dress theme (hence the front cover – and I can assure you, no dogs were asphyxiated in the taking of this photograph). P30 Plenty to do then. One of the mantras of Maggy Pigott’s successful new book ‘How to Age Joyfully’ is to keep active. So there’s a few ideas. P27 And once you’ve done all that, nip out and collect a bit of wild fruit and Sara Ward will show you how to make liqueurs with it. P9 Best wishes,

Bridget Editor Bridget Osborne

SUMMER AT CHISWICK Auctions 10 - 14 August

SUMMER AT CHISWICK AUCTIONS 10 – 14 AUGUST Would you like to go and have a look at the lots coming up for sale at the Affordable Luxury and Design & Interiors auction at Chiswick Auctions? Can’t because you have to look after the children? Chiswick Auctions have come up with a cunning plan to involve children in a Summer Festival, so they can have some fun and you can have a sneaky look at what’s on sale without feeling you are depriving them. The auction, on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th August, is the auction rooms’ biggest sale this year and features a private collection of items from internationally renowned Interior Designer Broosk Saib. Among the items on sale are fashion, jewellery, antiques, furniture, paintings, books and carpets. Over the weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, you can have a look at the lots for sale and have a free and confidential valuation on any item you may wish to sell at auction yourself.

Fancy painting like Picasso? Your children can have a go at being an auctioneer with Auctioneer Matt Caddick. You (and they) may enjoy joining John Rogers, Head of Silver & Objects of Vertu, for tips on how to become the perfect host at your next Afternoon Tea Party (apparently milk cartons aren’t allowed on the table - who knew?!). Is your child the next Picasso? Bring them along to Mini Picassos children’s art workshop. Or maybe they’d just like to play with Lego. Be inspired to build the ultimate creation at a drop-in Lego session and have your favourite Toy or Lego valued by specialists Winnie McGee and Peter Winnicott. Tips on keeping jewellery looking its best, how best to style a room, how best to display your most prized possessions and wine tasting sessions will also keep the adults amused.

Saturday 10th August: 10.00am – 6.00pm. Sunday 11th: 10.00am – 5.00pm Auction Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th August from 10.00am.

BRENTFORD FESTIVAL

BRENTFORDFestival Come and join in a Free Family Festival

It’s always good when you find free, fun stuff to do on your doorstep. Held on the first Sunday in September (which this year happens to be 1st September) in Blondin Park, The Brentford Festival has become quite a big deal, with the number of visitors growing from 3,000 to over 10,000 since it started in 2005. It’s run by a team of volunteers and all profits from each festival are invested into the next year’s events, so it just gets bigger and better. You may notice quite a few historic Routemaster buses parked up and some handsome chickens running around. That would be because the guys who run Red Routemaster, which hires out the iconic buses for weddings and parties, and Sara Ward of Hen Corner are two of the organisers, along with ‘Brentford champion’ Linda Massey, Made in TW8 and Friends of Boston Manor. Red Routemaster is operating a shuttle service to the park so you don’t have to take your car. Details on the festival website. Visitors to the festival will find loads to do, interesting things to buy and tasty food and drink to refresh

yourselves. The live stage presents the opportunity for local musicians and performers to play to a large audience to gain new followings. Popular local band Republic of Brentford offers a lively mix of country (Johnny Cash/Hank Williams), folk and rock, Kraftwerk on guitars and violins. The band has an ongoing residency at the Northumberland Arms in Brentford. The London Zappa Collective is a diverse group of musicians who love nothing more than playing the music of Frank Zappa. Music on the main stage from 12.00 pm. Previous events have included a dog show, a petting zoo, a classic vehicles display and Royal Horticultural Society workshops. Craft stalls selling unique gifts have included cards, jewellery, local prints, glass ware, Celtic designs, hand blocked Indian prints, handmade gifts and scarves. Enjoy some sun in the park on the last weekend before the school term begins.

HEN CORNER

HEDGEROW

Delights Sara Ward

I regularly take a moment to count my blessings and one that is always near the top of the list is living here in Brentford. I love the country with its picturesque views, open skies and fluffy sheep, but I am definitely a city girl at heart. Our corner of West London is really rather special, snuggling up to the River Thames at the junction with the Grand Union Canal, within a five minute stroll we can find ourselves on a towpath that feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of urban life and this is where we can find the treasures of the season. Within easy reach we can gather sloes, blackberries, rosehips and more, to turn into jellies, jams, syrups and liqueurs; goodies for the larder that will be a welcome find on colder nights. If you buy fruit in plastic punnets from the supermarket, stash some away and reuse them on your next riverside

walk. Old glass jam jars can be reused as well, simply wash in hot soapy water, rinse and sterilize in the oven (120c for 20mins), boil the lids in water for a few minutes, they are perfect for preserving your late summer finds.

RECIPE FOR FRUIT LIQUEURS This is a very flexible recipe that guarantees a special treat as an aperitif, cocktail ingredient or after dinner drink. Ingredients: 250g Autumnal fruit (damsons, plums, sloes, raspberries, blackberries, etc.)

Method:

125g Granulated sugar

2. Tip the frozen fruit into a glass jar or plastic container (that has a tight fitting lid).

375ml Spirit (gin, vodka, whisky, rum, brandy)

1. Pick over the fruit, removing stems, leaves or damaged fruit, place in a suitable bag / container and freeze overnight to soften the skins - this helps release the fruit juices.

3. Sprinkle the sugar over the fruit and top up with the spirit of your choice. 4. Seal well and leave at room temperature for a couple of months, giving the jar a gentle twist each day to ensure even infusion. 5. Decant the finished liqueur into pretty bottles and save the drunken fruit for a special dessert or grown up cake.

I am pleased to say this is becoming a tradition. This year’s Chiswick In Pictures exhibition at the Clayton Hotel Chiswick is the third show bringing together images inspired by the area, painted by artists who live locally. Chiswick has a wealth of excellent artists – award winning, sought after by galleries, selected by the Royal Academy for its summer exhibitions – who paint, or create, in a variety of styles. I’ve gone for representational art rather than abstract, the main criteria being that the subject is somewhere in Chiswick or the surrounding area. (I make one notable exception to that rule – Jill Meager’s beady eyed little birds, which have hopped into every exhibition so far. They are just so winsome – and besides, I know a Chiswick bird when I see one!) Twenty artists are sharing their interpretations of our little bit of west London: images of Chiswick House

and Gardens, the parks and green spaces and of course the river; delicate watercolours by Hugh Bredin, large oil paintings by Arabella Harcourt- Cooze and Humphrey Bangham, prints by Rachel Busch and Sally Grumbridge. I’d like to say I’d curated the exhibition, but I’m not sure saying ‘Ooh that’s lovely, can I show that one?’ really counts as ‘curating’! The work will be on sale. Come and have a look and see if anything takes your fancy. The exhibition is hung in the large atrium of the hotel, so you can come in at any time, have a coffee at the bar and wander round at your leisure. Among the artists taking part: Anna Kunst, Arabella Harcourt-Cooze, Christine Berrington, Francis Bowyer, George Christie, Hugh Bredin, Humphrey Bangham, Jane Price, Jill Meager, Joanna Brendon, Jon Perry, Rachel Busch, Rennie Pilgrem, Sally Grumbridge and Sarah Granville.

HEAD GARDENER’S NOTES Andy Eddy, Head Gardener at Osterley Park writes:One of the chief glories of summer in the garden is the wonderful selection of climbing plants that we can use to clothe our walls and fences, chief amongst these is clematis and we grow may varieties in the formal Garden at Osterley. In the first photo you can see an old but stunning variety called ‘Perle d’Azure’, this solidly reliable variety will flower all through the summer whether on a wall or in this instance on a hazel tripod, I was first introduced to this glorious plant when I was part of the garden team at Sissinghurst Castle in Kent where we trained it onto an east facing, curving wall and as there were over twenty plants the whole surface dripped with colour.

There are different times to, and also, differing ways to prune clematis; ‘Perle d’Azure’ is a type two and should be cut back hard every winter to a good set of buds – about eighteen inches above the soil level, this is the same routine for all mid to late flowering types. However ‘Rebecca’ being a large flowered hybrid that starts flowering early in the season should only be lightly pruned when necessary - if it becomes too large or unwieldy. All in all these splendid and relatively easy to grow plants will grow happily for many years providing a colourful backdrop to other garden plants.

The second photo shows a new hybrid developed in the last twenty years that is named ‘Rebecca’ and I have it growing in my own garden at Bothy Cottage where I live on the estate at Osterley. It is remarkably free flowering and is covered in bloom from the beginning of May and through June, with more flowers appearing throughout the summer months right through until the autumn. As you can see in the picture I have this plant growing in a large, rectangular pot – another good way of growing clematis if space is at a premium – either on a patio or even a balcony.

JOHN POTTER, ARTIST

JOHN POTTER

Artist Doing it for himself

John Potter has spent many years hanging the work of other artists – everyone from Damien Hirst to Michelangelo. Now he’s hanging his own work at Redlees studio in Isleworth, for a solo exhibition from 7th -15th September. As senior art handler at the Royal Academy he has managed some huge challenges – literally huge, in the sense of mass and weight. Ai Wei Wei’s sculptural installation ‘Straight’ involved 150 tons of steel rebar which the artist recovered from the sites of schools which collapsed in the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan. Damien Hirst’s artwork ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’ meant taking the tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde out of its glass case and putting it back regularly – apparently you can’t just leave it there. His original shark deteriorated, making the liquid murky, and had to be replaced. John has always been an artist himself, studying at Chelsea and Camberwell art schools in the 1980s, and his work has been shown several times in Royal Academy

Summer exhibitions. Having travelled the world with art exhibitions, he now lives and paints in Isleworth, sharing studio space with a number of other artists at Redlees Studios. Run by Hounslow Council, the artists’ workshops are in what used to be a stable block on three sides of a central courtyard. They open their studios to display their work twice a year, in summer and winter. John’s solo exhibition is an additional event, showcasing his work based on his impressions and interpretation of the River Thames. Every day he walks down to the river, where ‘the Duke of Northumberland’s river’, an old mill stream, runs into it. “I love the industrial history of the place” he says, pointing to the barges in various stages of decay and renovation at BJ Wood’s boatyard across from the aptly named Town Wharf pub. “I’m fascinated by the river. It always looks different”. John’s oil paintings, ranging from £350 for a small one to £2,00 for one of the large ones, are on show at Redlees Studios from 7th – 15th September.

TIDEFEST Photographs by Anna Kunst

TIDEFEST London’s Family River Festival Tidefest will be held at Strandon-the-Green on Sunday 8th September. The annual event, now in its fifth year, is all about encouraging people to enjoy the River Thames. It’s a chance to try out all sorts of river activities – paddle boarding, river dipping, kayaking, and water games – and especially to introduce children to them. There will also be an angling competition and the opportunity to take boat trips and visit the nature reserve on Oliver’s Island (by kayak), the historic boatyard at Lots Ait, where Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were filmed for The African Queen, and Eel Pie Island, where the careers of The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton were launched. There are photography, birdwatching and history walks too. The events are either free or low cost - £2 or £3. Last year more than two thousand people visited the stalls along Strand on the Green and took part in the activities in the sunshine. Winner of

the Tidefest Angling Championship was Mike Martin-Davies, who picked up a £650 prize for his 41.4oz bag of bream. Tidefest organiser Martin Salter said “we caught baby sea bass and flounder in the seine nets by Kew Bridge which shows what an important nursery area the Thames Estuary has become”. It’s an encouraging sign that the water has been getting cleaner – so much so that locals have become used to the presence of a seal who’s made his home by Kew Bridge, attracted by the plentiful supply of food. This year there will also be a line-up of local talent providing live music. Folk duo Duffy & Bird offer their brand of Folk / Americana. The Ealing based Chansongs Trio offer a celebratory repertoire of French and American Jazz. Olive & Alex offer an acoustic set, mixing covers with their own songs, and singer-songwriter Saffron will also be performing her own songs and those of some of the musicians she admires.

CHISWICK BOOK FESTIVAL

CHISWICK

Book Festival

Director Torin Douglas promises pure gold entertainment As the Chiswick Book Festival approaches, I’m often asked if there’s a theme this year. And I always say - no, there’s something for everyone, whatever their age. But in fact there are usually two recurring themes - anniversaries and Chiswick.

Marking that 200th anniversary, we have sessions on several eminent Victorians. AN Wilson will speak about his forthcoming biography of Prince Albert, in the opening event at Chiswick House where he spoke about Victoria three years ago.

A rich choice of anniversaries

Ruskin and the arts and crafts pioneer William Morris will be celebrated in the Arts & Crafts church of St Michael & All Angels, and there are also sessions about two contrasting poets - the Nobel Prize winner WB Yeats and Edward Lear, whose brilliant achievements were overshadowed by his reputation as the father of the limerick and ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’!

Like most event organisers (and editors, for that matter), we’re always on the lookout for anniversaries worth marking. And 2019 has produced a significant crop, from the bicentenaries of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and John Ruskin, and the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II to the moon landing 50 years ago.

18

L@outandabout_mag

On the anniversary of the start of WWII in September 1939, we have sessions on the Dambusters; the Mountbattens; appeasement; the propaganda battle to get the US into the war; the Priests of the Resistance; and ‘A Woman of No Importance’, the glamorous American spy Virginia Hall. Marking the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, we’ll have the former BBC science correspondent Dr David Whitehouse talking about his acclaimed new book Apollo 11. (Other BBC names include Jane Garvey of Woman’s Hour, chairing a session on Women In The Archers; Dharshini David interviewing Bruce Daisley on his book The Joy of Work; www.fhwem.com/publishing

CHISWICK BOOK FESTIVAL former BBC News broadcasters Mihir Bose and Kamal Ahmed discussing what it means to be British in the age of Brexit.

Chiswick authors Then there’s Chiswick. As well as our traditional local authors party at Waterstones, when speakers have two minutes to describe and ‘sell’ their books, we’ll be celebrating some ‘local treasures’. As well as WB Yeats, who lived and wrote in Bedford Park in his formative years, we’ll be remembering Richard Briers, a genuine ‘national treasure’, with his daughter Lucy Briers, friend and co-star Peter Egan and biographer James Hogg. And distinguished local resident, writer and broadcaster Polly Devlin will talk about her new collection of journalism, Writing Home.

Other speakers will include Cressida Cowell, Peter Frankopan, Janet Ellis, Sadie Jones, Linwood Barclay, Mark Billingham, Ken Livingstone, Alan Judd, Lindsey Hilsum, ‘the war doctor’ David Nott, Britain’s first black police chief Michael Fuller and many more. The Festival runs from Thursday September 12th to Monday 16th 2019, with a few events either side of the long weekend! Tickets via the Festival website chiswickbookfestival.net.

All workshops are appropriate for children over the age of eight accompanied by an adult with the exception of the knife sharpening class! Lucinda Miller will show you how to cook with kids and get more of The Good Stuff inside them. But if you love a biscuit, you must love a super-sized biscuit! Hattie Cufflin returns to show you how to make a MEGA jammy dodger. Incredibly, all the chefs are donating their time as all the proceeds of the Cookbook Festival go to charity. The Felix Project has been added this year as the food charity. The Cookbook Festival is run alongside the Chiswick Book Festival and donates to the same charities. Tickets to the Cookbook Festival start at ÂŁ8 and all the information can be found on the website cookbookfestival.org.

JO PRATT’S RECIPE

SMOKY BEAN AND

Monkfish Stew

A delicious recipe from Jo Pratt’s book ‘The Flexible Pescatarian’ This stew is simple and quick to cook, and has a Spanish feel to it. Monkfish is a fantastic fish, as it holds itself really well in stews and curries, and is also able to stand up to bold flavours. It’s not necessarily the cheapest of fish, so if you want to use an alternative, prawns, cod cheeks, hake or gurnard will all work really well in this dish.

Ingredients 500g/1 lb 2 oz monkfish fillet 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, peeled and sliced 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1½ tsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp tomato purée 400g/14 oz tinned cannellini, butter or haricot beans, drained 1 roasted red pepper, thinly sliced 850ml/1½ pints/3½ cups fish stock 1 bay leaf Handful of chopped flat-leaf parsley Flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Flexible

Time taken 40 minutes | Serves 4 Cut the monkfish into equal-sized pieces and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

The end result will be pretty different, but to make this a vegetarian stew, Heat a large pan over a medium heat and add the olive oil. When hot, add the you can swap the monkfish for double onions and gently sauté for 5–6 minutes, until they are softened and starting the amount of beans. TURNHAM GREEN TERRACE STREET PARTY

ON THE TERRACE

Together

Karen Liebreich of Abundance London invites you to the Turnham Green Terrace street party On Sunday 15th Sept, from 11am-4pm, Chiswick will be celebrating. One of the main shopping and through routes, Turnham Green Terrace, will be closed to traffic for a huge and joyful celebration. Abundance London, in partnership with the Cookbook Festival, is holding a street party to celebrate the relaunch of the piazza area and the unveiling of a new art project.

The new planting and stylish benches are in, the fountain will once again be spouting, the area is ready for action. In association with local traders and in anticipation of Car Free London (22 September) there will be live music all day from fantastic local bands BGM, The Derivatives, Alistair Pope, and Duffy and Bird. Loads of fun art, play and gardening activities, cookery demos and other free stuff, plus tables all down the road for you to eat lunch from local traders and enjoy the event at your leisure. Why not invite your friends to come and see what’s special about Chiswick? Have a meal together on the traffic-free road, help make some big bug totems – totem poles which look great and will be nice and comfy for a few local inhabitants of the insect variety - or create life sized self-portraits (kids & adults), learn some new cookery skills, check out the other activities on offer and enjoy the music. The traders from Turnham Green Terrace have lots of special offers, and some of the Devonshire Road and High Road guys will be joining us too with extra stalls. The party will be a highlight of the second Cookbook Festival, 12th-15th September. We’ll also be awarding the 2019 Abundance Awards for guerrilla gardening, sponsored this year by Polly Devlin OBE, author of a fantastic book about how she created a wildflower meadow (and appearing at this year’s Chiswick Book Festival, on at the same time). And last, but not least, we’ll be launching the ‘4th Plinth’ for W4, an artwork in the piazza that will change every few months. Karen Liebreich is a co-founder and director of Abundance London. HOW TO AGE JOYFULLY

HOW TO AGE Joyfully Review of the book by Maggy Pigott, by Bridget Osborne

Chiswick author Maggy Pigott has just launched her book How to Age Joyfully and it is already ranked 15 in the Amazon Best Sellers for books about ageing. Her book is also one of the online distributor’s ‘hot new releases’. How to Age Joyfully is a practical guide in how to do just that. In one way it’s a statement of the bleedin’ obvious – keep active, eat healthily, stay fit – but in other ways it’s quite revelatory, her ‘eight steps’ set out in short, dense chapters, packed full of practical ideas and useful information. Her main message – ‘We’re living longer – let’s live better!’ is delivered with the fervour of a convert rather than the patronizing tones of a young, fit person imparting

knowledge to those hopeless saps over 60 who know no better, to whom you have to speak slowly in words of one syllable.

former Director General of Age Concern, Alan Johnson, former Health Secretary, and writer and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth.

Maggy has had a career as a high powered civil servant and thought her enjoyment of life was over when a debilitating illness forced her to give up work. Her route back to physical fitness and mental wellbeing has been through dance.

Maggy goes dancing several times a week and much of the rest of her time is taken up with Open Age, a charity which champions an active life for older people. They provide a wide range of physical, creative and mentally stimulating activities to enable ‘older people’ (over 50) to develop new skills, fulfill their potential and make new friends. Maggy is donating half her royalties to the charity.

Her missionary zeal for living life to the full is infectious. Ageing, she says, has made her ‘bolder, not older’, which is how she came to approach Dame Judi Dench to write the foreword – now there’s a role model for old age if ever there was one. How to Age Joyfully has also received endorsements from Baroness Sally Greengross,

How to Age Joyfully: Eight Steps to a Happier, Fuller Life’ was published on 11 July by Summersdale Publishers Ltd.

CHISWICK HOUSE DOG SHOW

CHISWICK HOUSE

Dog Show 2019 Mel Giedroyc judging

Ant McPartlin and Michael Ball

Jan Preece invites you to come and have a laugh with some adorable dogs The 15th Annual Chiswick House Dog Show takes place this year on Sunday 22nd September. This Show is run by local volunteers for the enjoyment of the whole community, not just for their ‘best friends,’ and the aim is to raise money to maintain and improve Chiswick House Gardens. Entry is free: it’s a fun day out for all the family – and you don’t have to own a dog to come along! This year we are celebrating 50 years since the moon landings. Those entering the Fancy Dress competition (for adults/dogs/children) will have plenty of opportunity to let their imaginations run free. The 18 classes range from Waggiest Tail to Prettiest Bitch, from My Dog’s Got Talent to Next Top Model, and from Naughtiest Dog to Best Veteran. Enter your dog into one (or more) of the classes; all are welcome - big, small, pedigree, miniature, cross-breed, rescue, naughty – there’s a class for every dog! The usual raft of surprise celebrity judges will be present. Recent judges have included TV presenter Mel Giedroyc, singer Michael Ball and actor David Tennant as well as local vets and vet nurses, dog trainers and behaviourists, local councillors and dog walkers.

Each year the Dogs Trust hold a re-homing parade for potential dog-owners looking for a new ‘best friend’. The Womballs Flyball Club will be on site during the day to entertain everyone with their exuberant and enthusiastic exercises. There will be an even wider than usual variety of food stalls, BBQ, beer and wine bars, and a Fun and Games Arcade for the children. Another 50 or so stalls provide an eclectic range of dog related stuff - pet portraiture, canine charities, local artists, dog treats and every form of dog accessory imaginable! And, of course, the ever-popular Chiswick House & Gardens’ home grown produce cart will be in prime position. It takes more than 150 volunteers to run the Dog Show, so if you would like to volunteer to help please email volunteer@chiswickhousedogshow.org.uk Sunday 22nd September 2017, 11 am to 4.30 pm, Cricket Pitch (Staveley Road entrance), Chiswick House and Gardens. Jan Preece is the Chairman of the Chiswick House Dog Show.
