EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome As I write this, we are about to see the ending of Covid restrictions in a few days’ time. All the festivals and events which usually happen in September have been given the green light to go ahead. Considers your Sundays booked! And maybe your Thursday evenings too.

The first Sunday of September sees the first anniversary of the Chiswick Flower Market, with lots of stalls selling cut flowers, shrubs and bedding plants, pots, bulbs, houseplants and dried flowers, but also edible plants, including Microgreens and grow-your-own mushroom kits. Page 9 On the second weekend of September the Chiswick Book Festival makes a triumphant return, with a programme of talks with some famous names talking about their books, live and in person. Pages 12 - 13 Tidefest, also on Sunday 12th September, is part of Thames Tidefest. Taking place at Strand on the Green, Chiswick and other venues along the Thames Tideway, it offers all sorts of river-related family fun: paddle boarding, kayaking, foreshore walks, island visits, London’s biggest angling competition and more. Page 7 The following weekend it’s Artists At Home, when 93 artists in Chiswick, Acton, Hammersmith and

Shepherd’s Bush will be opening their homes and studios to the public. Page 11 The theme for Chiswick House Dog show this year is 50 years of Glastonbury, if you and your dog fancy dressing up. Otherwise there are all sorts of classes to enter, from Prettiest Bitch to My Dog’s Got Talent. Or you can come along, with or without a dog and just enjoy this free family day out on Sunday 26th September as a spectator. Page 8 So that’s your Sundays taken care of. Jazz at George IV is back too, but instead of being monthly, it is now weekly. Live Music To Go and The Chiswick Calendar have a stellar line-up of musicians for you, playing all styes of Blues and Jazz. Page 19 As usual we have expert gardening tips from the head gardener at Osterley House on what to do in your garden at this time of year. Page 14 And Sara at Hen Corner is planning her autumn courses. Having won Gold at the World Marmalade Awards with her Seville orange preserve, her ‘Pick and Pickle’ Preserving Course on Tuesday 31st August is not to be missed. Page 20

TIDEFEST

TIDEFEST Martin Salter

Pictures by Anna Kunst

We are delighted to announce that following the continued easing of the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions Thames Tidefest 2021 will definitely being going ahead as planned on Sunday September 12th at Strand on the Green, Chiswick and other venues along the Thames Tideway. However, as last year, most of the events in our reduced programme will have to be pre- booked.

Local wildlife organisations, river and environmental groups and community associations have been involved in organising Tidefest since its inception in 2014. It is part of the month long Totally Thames Festival and is sponsored by Thames Water with support from the London Borough of Hounslow, Thames Festival, Port of London Authority and the Environment Agency.

Tidefest is now in its 8th year and celebrates the recreational opportunities available on the River Thames in London with activities for all the family. These include paddle boarding, kayaking, foreshore walks, island visits, London’s biggest angling competition and much more.

Visitors can enjoy river dipping with experts to discover what lives in the Thames or find some hidden corners with trips to the historic Oliver’s Island or the Eel Pie Island museum - celebrating the 60s music venue which saw the start of the careers of Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones.

Tidefest is now a well-established annual event with a loyal band of followers who turn out every year. It is an event which aims to help reconnect Londoners with their river and we do this by getting into and onto the water through a whole range of educational and recreational activities. The Thames holds over 120 different species of fish and is home to a tremendous array of birds yet surprisingly few people are aware of what a great resource we have here in the heart of London. Please put September 12th in your diary and visit our website to find out what the River Thames has to offer.

Full details including ticket bookings can be found at www.thamestidefest.net and on our Facebook page. Martin Salter is from the Angling Trust and is Chairman of Tidefest. f @outandaboutmagazines

CHISWICK DOG SHOW

CHISWICK

Dog Show Jan Preece

The 16th annual Chiswick House Dog Show is going to be held (paws crossed) on Sunday 26th September this year and will, as usual, be held on the cricket pitch in Chiswick House grounds. This show is run by a team local of volunteers for the enjoyment of the whole community - the aim being to raise money to maintain and improve Chiswick House grounds.

John D Wood are sponsoring the show again this year, and the ring sponsors are Dog Town, Butternut Box and Wolfevets. There will also be the usual raft of surprise celebrity judges present (in previous years these have included Michael Ball, Mel Giedroyc, Ant McPartlin, David Tennant, Callum Woodhouse, Wayne Sleep, Neil Dudgeon, Richard Lintern).

It’s a (free) fun day out for all the family – and you don’t have to own a dog to come along and enjoy it!

As well as a beer and wine bar, there will be the usual range of food stalls. Another 50 or more stalls provide the usual eclectic range - pet portraiture, canine charities, local artists, dog treats, RNLI, and every form of dog accessory imaginable! And the ever-popular Chiswick House & Gardens’ cart with fresh produce from the Kitchen Garden will be in prime position.

Classes range from Prettiest Bitch to My Dog’s Got Talent, and from Best Groomed to Best Veteran. There will also be the usual range of puppy classes – for all those people who have added a new pet to their home in the past year! It costs just £4 to enter a dog into a class – BUT THIS YEAR REGISTRATION HAS TO BE DONE ON LINE – keep watching the website for more details: www.chiswickhousedogshow.org.uk The theme this year is (what we had planned to celebrate last year) - 50 years of Glastonbury! Those entering the Fancy Dress competition (for adults / dogs / children) please take note!

8

It takes over 150 volunteers to run the Dog Show, so if you would like to volunteer to help (for just a couple of hours), please register via the website or email volunteer@chiswickhousedogshow.org.uk To find out more about the Dog Show, please visit the website at www.chiswickhousedogshow.org.uk Sunday 26th September 2021, 11am to 4.30 pm, Cricket Pitch, Chiswick House and Gardens.

CHISWICK FLOWER MARKET Celebrates it first anniversary

It’s a year since Chiswick Flower Market opened in Old Market Place on Chiswick High Rd, in the space where soldiers returning from the First World War first held an outdoor market in Chiswick in 1919. The market, the first new flower market to be opened in London

for 150 years, was an instant success, with around 7,500 people coming to the first one last September and similar numbers visiting the market since, on the first Sunday of the month. Come along on Sunday 5th September to celebrate the ‘Columbia Rd of West London’.

You will find cut flowers, shrubs and bedding plants, pots, bulbs, houseplants and dried flowers, plants to fill any holes in your border, spaces on your windowsill or doorstep, or dull patches in your life... and also edible plants, including Microgreens and growyour-own mushroom kits.

Kathryn Davey is among the artists opening their studios this September After a year of virtual events during the pandemic, Artists at Home, West London’s favourite open studios event, is back stronger than ever and is thrilled to be opening to the public again from 17-19 September 2021.

There are 93 artists taking part in this year’s Artists at Home, eight of whom are new to this year’s event. Artists at Home normally opens in the third week of June but this year has chosen an autumn weekend to ensure greater safety and confidence for artists opening their homes and for those visiting. We have all been busy creating over the lockdowns and are more eager than ever to open up our f @outandaboutmagazines

studios to visitors; the array and quality of work on offer this year is simply incredible.

Among the artists welcoming people into their homes and studios to show and sell their work are painters, graphic artists, potters, jewellers, photographers and artists who work with textiles and mixed media. You can browse the artwork available on the Artists At Home website: www.artistsathome.co.uk. Find art by artist / studio. Quite often several artists show their work together, so you might find a painter with a ceramicist and a jeweller in the same space. Then look at the map so you can

@outaboutmag

plan your route and see several studios over the weekend of 17 – 19 September. Artists are opening their homes and studios in Chiswick, Acton, Hammersmith and Shepherd’s Bush from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. Artists at Home was the first event of its kind in London – founded by artists Julian Trevelyan and Mary Fedden in 1973. Last year we were forced to show our work online only for the first time in our history. This year we are excited to welcome you into our homes and studios in person once more. Kathryn Davey is Chair of Artists At Home and is herself a painter.

CHISWICK BOOK FESTIVAL

CHISWICK

Book Festival

Director Torin Douglas is delighted to welcome you back in person to the festival This year’s Chiswick Book Festival will be held with live audiences, subject to the Government’s rules in September. Please save the dates: September 9th to 15th 2021 (with the pre-Festival Local Authors Evening on September 7th). Speakers will include Gyles Brandreth, Clare Balding, Ed Balls, Mary Anne Sieghart, Anne Sebba, Sarfraz Manzoor, Emily Mortimer, Tim Marshall, Steve Richards, Dr Amir Khan, Andrew Lownie, Suzannah Lipscomb, Parm Sandhu, Stuart Prebble, Jim Down, Roger Hermiston, Jacqueline Riding and many more. Gyles Brandreth will be talking about his autobiography Odd Boy Out. Known to audiences of Just

12

a Minute, QI, Have I Got News For You and Celebrity Gogglebox for his wit and good humour, Odd Boy Out is about more than Gyles and his exploits: ‘it is also a kaleidoscopic portrait of Britain from the 1950s onwards, featuring a cast drawn from politics, the media, swinging London, stage and screen, from Laurence Olivier to Twiggy’. Clare Balding’s motivational book Fall Off, Get Back On, Keep Going, recounts the inspirational stories of famous people who have shown courage in the face of adversity. Intended for older children and young teenagers. Ed Balls’ book Appetite is ‘a memoir with a twist’: part autobiography, part cookbook,

f @outandaboutmagazines

@outaboutmag

as befits an author who is now probably better known as a chef and a dancer than he is as a politician. Anne Sebba’s biography of Ethel Rosenberg is the tale of a 37 year old mother of two executed for conspiracy to commit espionage during the Cold War – ‘a catastrophic failure of humanity and justice that continues to haunt the national conscience’. On the fiction front, former Home Secretary Alan Johnson will introduce his first novel and there will be acclaimed fiction from Jane Thynne (writing as CJ Carey), Jessica Fellowes, Elizabeth Buchan, Nancy Tucker, Susan Spindler and many more. www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk

CHISWICK BOOK FESTIVAL

Alan Johnson’s novel The Late Train to Gypsy Hill is a thriller: ‘a gripping slice of contemporary espionage that takes in shadowy conspiracy, the Russian mafia and a beautiful woman on a train who may not be all that she seems’. The Late Train to Gypsy Hill is given four stars by Goodreads. There are some good parts for older women in this book festival. The author of Solitaire and Faith and Beauty, Jane Thynne, has written Widowland, a dystopian novel imagining a Vichy style Britain set in 1953. It’s Coronation year, but not the coronation of Elizabeth II. ‘Thirteen years have passed since a Grand Alliance between Great Britain and Germany was formalised. George VI and his family have vanished, and Edward VIII rules as king’. She does, chillingly, what Robert Harris did for Germany in Fatherland and Philip Roth did for American in The Plot Against America, only focused on women – particularly f @outandaboutmagazines

the subversive architects of insurgency: childless women over 50 who have been banished and who have nothing to lose. Susan Spindler has written the tale of a postmenopausal woman who opts to take on the responsibility of becoming a surrogate mother for her daughter. The debut novel by long term Chiswick resident Susan has had rave reviews in publications such as Heat magazine and Cosmopolitan and was chosen as Virago’s lead fiction debut for Spring 2021. It’s ‘an absolute belter of a page-turner’ says Heat. ‘A gripping read’ says Cosmopolitan. Children’s authors include Chitra Soundar, Josie Dom (on the very timely Animalympics), and the return of Chiswick favourites Zoe Antoniades, Joshua Siegal and Neil Zetter. Chitra Soundar is an internationally published, awardwinning author of over 50 books for children. Her stories are set in Indian families and are inspired

@outaboutmag

by her own growing up in India. Her latest book Manju’s Magic Muddle, published in July, is a tale with which any child can identify: she’s stuck at home and she is BORED. Looking for entertainment, she summons the genie. When he turns up with a terrible cold, the genie can’t hear any of Manju’s wishes properly and his magic is even more strange than usual. ... This year’s Book Festival is also focusing on famous Chiswick authors, including Nancy Mitford and Anthony Burgess, and on a major new biography of William Hogarth: the author Dr Jacqueline Riding will speak in the new Weston Studio at Hogarth’s House on the evening of Monday 13th September.

HEAD

Gardener’s NOTES

Andy Eddy, Head Gardener at Osterley Park & House, writes “Although we are at the height of summer in our gardens and luxuriating in warmth and the heady scent and colour of all of our hard work it is already time to turn to thoughts of next year and how to prepare for its display. One of those preparations is bulb ordering and particularly the ordering and consequent planting of specimens that need to go into the soil in the next month. One of these is the glorious, and easy, autumn crocus – Colchicum autumnale, whose pale pink or white goblet flowers light up the garden through the autumn months. These beautiful plants, which are in fact members of the lily family, are very easy to grow if you find the right spot. This is due to them producing

leaves at the end of the winter which then die down in the summer and it can be all too easy to forget where they are and dig them up by mistake! Here at Osterley we grow them at the base of trees which mimics their growing habits to produce their leaves when the tree cover is absent in late winter/ early spring. This mitigates summer forking disasters as we are less likely to be digging or weeding under our trees and also easier to remember this is where we planted these botanical treasure. As well as being a splendid addition to the autumn garden these bulbs quickly multiply and can be dug up and distributed around the garden or given to friends all in all a perfect addition to the autumn garden!”

ADVERTORIAL

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT WATERMANS Erica Weston

As I write this, it’s 19 July: so-called freedom day. We’re optimistic, but we know things can change quickly so, a little health warning on this article: please check our website before coming along! One of the things we’ve really tried to do throughout the pandemic is to listen to our audiences more than ever. The Summertime Family Festival (27 July-12 Aug) is the result of listening to you: whether you have children or not, many of you recognise the sacrifices that children have had to make in terms of education and life experiences. So a festival to allow them to make up some of that fun time and creative learning felt like a really important thing to do this summer. As we approach the global climate change conference COP26 in Glasgow, we join a nationwide project to celebrate our environment and inspire urgent climate action. Our Season for

18

Change will take in multiple events across our programme. A highlight will be artist Dan Archer’s We Are Watching: it’s a monumental eye, made up of thousands of portraits contributed from 190 countries. It flies on a flag the size of a 10-storey building and is raised at key climate events to hold leaders accountable as they decide the future of our planet. Its message is crystal-clear: the eyes of the world are upon you. Come along to Lampton Park on 10 & 11 September to see it and join in. Finally, watch out for a Dance Umbrella Weekender in October. It’s so exciting that London’s international dance festival, a long-time partner of Watermans, will be taking over our building for a whole weekend with an array of workshops, performances and a children’s show. See you soon!

HEN CORNER

Gold IN A Jar Sara Ward

Regular readers will know that we love to produce our own food and delight in the simple pleasure of preserving fruit and vegetables, when in season, allowing us to enjoy them all year round. Whilst watching my beans spiral-climb their poles and praying for sunshine to ripen my figs it was a wonderful surprise to discover how well my Seville orange preserve did at this year’s World Marmalade Awards. Last year, we were very pleased with our Bronze award and, after reading the judges’ comments, decided to up our game, refine our recipe and hope that we could scoop a silver badge. We were literally jumping for joy when we received the email saying ‘Congratulations - you are a Gold winner!’ This year, despite the pandemic

and multiple lockdowns, the Marmalade Awards received a record-breaking number of entries, with over 3,000 jars from more than 30 countries as far afield as Japan, Canada, Australia, Kuwait and the Dominican Republic. The Artisan Awards are judged by an expert panel including food writer Dan Lepard and Fortnum & Mason Grocery Buyer Sarah Metcalf, so we were really rather chuffed that our pot rated so highly. Founder of the Awards Jane Hasell-McCosh says: ‘We have always been so proud to champion quality artisan producers, and this year it has been more important than ever. Small businesses have been hit incredibly hard by the pandemic, but I think it has made people realise how vital good, local food is, and I hope that Hen Corner

will have huge success with their marmalade both locally and further afield. The quality of artisan marmalade has never been higher and I am so proud of our Award winners this year.’ Fortunately, we made a good stash of the stuff back in January and whilst we sold quite a bit at the recent Chiswick Cheese Market, we still have plenty available for those who would like to try it. As we progress into the British harvest season, we will be making our usual chutneys, pickles and jellies. While our home-made produce is available to buy via our Bakery website, why not join us on a course to learn some new skills? ‘Pick and Pickle’ Preserving Course Tuesday 31st August
