EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome “The spring is sprung the grass is riz” as the old nonsense rhyme goes. The hens are out scratching about for food and beginning to lay eggs again. It’s also time to spring clean the beehives at Hen Corner says Sara Ward. (Page 26) If your new year’s resolution is to take up running and you need a little encouragement you could join ultra marathon runners Jacquie and Cam who are setting up a beginners running group and offering their advice for free. (Page 6). Hogarth Youth and Community Centre is starting 2019 as an independent business, having lost its funding when Hounslow’s Youth Services budget was slashed. The Trust which runs it wants your help. (Pages 8 – 9) February brings Valentine’s Day, which TV chef, restaurateur and cook book author Jo Pratt says is best celebrated with an easy, stress free dinner at home. (Pages 16 – 17) It also brings half term and the chance for children to meet Brentford FC’s first team players and have a kick about with them and take part in Soccer Schools run by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust. (Page 22) Jazz at George IV in Chiswick High Rd is back with a spectacular spring line up on the first Thursday of each month: The Jazz Mondays, Trio Manouche and the Oriana Curls trio. (Page 23)

There’s a little bit of history in this issue. Dr Neil Faulkner is talking to the Arts Society, Chiswick on Thursday 14th February about new evidence he and his colleague Professor Nick Saunders have uncovered about Lawrence of Arabia after nine years of archaeological investigations in the deserts of southern Jordan. (Page 10) Chiswick is celebrating its literary history with a Writers Timeline and trail. See where the likes of Dame Iris Murdoch, John Osborne and Harold Pinter lived and worked. (Pages 20 – 21) The first exhibition of the great painter JMW Turner at the artist’s home in Twickenham starts 1st February, showing his illustrations for the books of Sir Walter Scott. (Page 28) And the exhibition of silverware ‘Made for the Table’ continues at Osterley House until 24th February, with a programme of activities for children and adults. (Page 30) Hope you enjoy reading it all.

In a previous interview (with magazine Inner surrey) Beata said:

“There are as many curves and shapes on a horse as there are on a woman. It makes me look at the aspect of the horse from different angles. I am fascinated by bones, muscles, tendons and their mechanisms. To me, [horses] represent sacred spirit - spirit of the earth.”

Interview with James Brewer January 2019

The artist paints the femaie figure as part of the animal world - the horse’s world; by showing animal and human features, the subject of the horse is humanised. It’s a practice of experimentation and implementation. The world that lies behind those figures stems from inspiration drawn from our roots, our beginnings and the movement of visual arts.

By the time you read this, these figures may no longer be accurate. That’s how often mother and daughter Jacquie Millet and Camilla Langlands run marathons. The pair had a new Guinness World Record created for them when they passed the milestone of running more than 100 marathons together last year. At time of writing (January) Jacquie had run 184 and Camilla 148, but they’re about to run one in Phoenix, Arizona on 9th February and another in Limasol, Cyprus on 12th March.

totally changed her life “We have such fun“ she says “and we’ve met so many new friends doing it.”

They’ve been all round the world running together, from Japan to South Africa, Barcelona to Boston. Six months ago they started a blog ‘This Is How We Run’ with hints and tips about running and now they’ve decided to start a beginners group in Chiswick for anyone who has no experience of running or maybe hasn’t done it for a long time, who would like to give it a go.

They will be taking a small group of people on a weekly run in Chiswick, walking the course initially and building up over nine weeks from nothing to 5k. Participants will be expected to do two more runs themselves each week as well. The sessions are free and if you’re interested, contact them at thisishowwerun@gmail.com

This all started for Jacquie when she had a health scare in her late ‘50s and decided she’d better get fit. She discovered she was good at running and did her first marathon in Edinburgh in May 2010. Now 66, she says running has

Camilla’s first marathon was London in 2013. At 32 she manages to combine a career in teaching with travelling the world running. They’re hoping to encourage people who would maybe find the prospect of joining a running club a bit daunting. “It can be quite intimidating” she says “turning up and seeing loads of people who look really good”.

HOGARTH FEATURE COMMUNITY CENTRE

CHISWICK'S BEST KEPT

Secret

Hogarth Community Centre is open for business There’s a building right in the middle of Chiswick with a well-equipped gym, martial arts studio, sound studio, kitchen area and two large halls, one with a stage, the other with a basket-ball court marked out, with flooring perfect for dancing or yoga or a range of other activities. But not many people in Chiswick are aware of its existence. “It’s Chiswick’s best kept secret” says Patrick Brougham, one of the Hogarth Community Centre’s trustees.

considered ‘rough’ rather than desirable. Hogarth Youth Centre still runs youth clubs four evenings a week for juniors, intermediates and seniors ranging from 8 - 18 years old which are valued hugely by those who use them.

The building is sandwiched between Hogarth Primary School and St Mary’s RC Primary School at the end of Duke Rd and you could be forgiven for thinking it belonged to one of the two schools, as it started life in 1884 as Hogarth’s Infants School. Closed as a school in 1991 it has been home to youth groups for more than 20 years, dating back to the days when the Glebe estate was

Cllr John Todd says the centre plays a crucial role. “There are hidden pockets of deprivation in Chiswick” he says. “The centre offers comfort and security to children and parents, some of whom are very poor. They have the opportunity to do and see things they wouldn’t have the chance to do otherwise. Having somewhere to go makes these kids less vulnerable to the temptations of drug-dealers and gangsters”.

8

“We provide a safe and nurturing environment” says trustee Fred Lucas. “The centre also provides half term programmes and residential trips in the summer holidays”.

HOGARTH COMMUNITY CENTRE

Denny Anthony, right Youth Officer

Naomi Alleyne, senior youth worker

Going it alone

Community involvement

The centre lost its funding at the end of last year and now has to survive as an independent business. Hounslow Council, which ran it for many years had its youth services budget slashed from £860,000 to £212,000 – a cut of 75% and despite a hard fought campaign led by Cllr John Todd, the youth service has been cut loose to fend for itself, albeit with a transitional budget to cushion its launch into the free market.

This is not a charity playing the victim card. Once they were sure they were not being closed down they regrouped and set about working out how to survive, retaining Denny Anthony as the lead youth officer, with assistant Naomi Alleyne.

The council owns the building but the Trust has to find the funding for two youth workers, support workers and the centre’s running costs. The shortfall is some £60,000 a year, explains the Trust’s CFO Fred Lucas, who has himself used the Dojo (martial arts school) to practice karate for many years. “It sounds like a lot of money but it is not unachievable” he explains. When they saw which way the wind was blowing they began to capitalize on their asset and over the past two years they have already doubled the revenue the centre receives from licencing out space. Both Little Kickers and Little Forest Folk use the building, as does the College for Chinese Medicine.

Now they are setting out their stall wanting the rest of Chiswick to get involved, demonstrate the oft quoted pride in community and put some skin in the game. They’re after new trustees – especially if you have some experience of youth organisations; volunteers to add to the range of activities on offer to young people, which currently include cookery, art and drama sessions; big businesses which might like to send a little corporate social responsibility money their way; individuals who would like to donate money and small businesses and clubs who are looking for space to hire in the heart of Chiswick.

If you are interested and think you might be able to help with any of the above, contact the centre’s manager Jamilla Amra at jamilla.amra@hogarthtrust.org.uk Hogarthtrust.org.uk L@outandabout_mag

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

Lawrence OF ARABIA

Liar and charlatan or military genius? Neil, Batn Al-Ghoul, Jordan, October 2017, by Iain Roxburgh

T.E. Lawrence by Augustus John

The Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. Lawrence remains the most detailed historical account there is of the Great Arab Revolt, which in 1916 aimed to create a single unified Arab state stretching from Aleppo in Syria to Aden in Yemen, gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire. But can Lawrence’s memoir be trusted as an historical account or was it the work of a liar and charlatan? Suspicion about the legend of Lawrence of Arabia has tainted the reputation of the man who was archaeologist, British intelligence officer and military leader fighting alongside Prince Feisal, one of the leaders of the Hashemite revolt. The work of two academics, the Great Arab Revolt Project, has led them to believe not only was his account accurate, but that he was an exceptionally reliable source. Dr Neil Faulkner and Professor Nick Saunders of Bristol University carried out nine years of archaeological investigations into the Great Arab Revolt between 2006 – 2014 in the deserts of southern Jordan. “Again and again and again we were able to find confirmation in the landscape of what he’d written” says Neil.

Surveying the ground with a metal detector, they were able to tell not only where military encounters took place but what happened. Like the study of blood spatter in a murder case, they carried out a forensic analysis of battle scenes looking at the distribution of bullets (incoming fire) and spent cartridges (outgoing) together with their make and manufacture. Their conclusion: he was telling the truth. “Lawrence finished the war a broken man” says Neil. He had been co-opted into British military intelligence because he had been working as an archaeologist in the area before the outbreak of war and spoke Arabic. But he never really recovered, says Neil, from the duplicity involved in fighting with the Arabs for a cause he knew at the same time the British were making sure they would never attain. “The British shafted the Arabs” says Neil. “While promising a united Arab state to get their help against the Ottoman Turks, they were at the same time carving up the Middle East map with the French”. His book Lawrence of Arabia’s war is available in bookshops and online.

Dr Neil Faulkner is talking to the Arts Society, Chiswick on Thursday 14 February in the Malinova Room at The Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK), 238-246 King Street, Hammersmith, London W6 0RF. Tickets £10 on the door. 10

OSTERLEY PARK’S GARDEN HOUSE RESTORED TO GLORY ‘Osterley Park has one of the few remaining garden buildings that were designed by the architect Robert Adam in the 18th century that are still being used for their original purpose. Adam designed the semi-circular glass fronted building to be used to display rare and unusual flowering plants for the Child’s family when they were in residence. The National Trust has spent a considerable amount of money over the last year renovating this spectacular survival from the 1780s and it is now gleaming once more. It has become a much more usable space for all of our visitors who will now be able to access the building from any one of the five curved ‘windows’ that slide up at the front to view the collection of flowering plants that we display here. These are all specimens that were available in the 18th century , and more particularly, we know to have been grown here due to lists of plants that were delivered to the park in the 1780s. Many of these plants may seem quiet modern such as olive trees or agaves but were indeed grown quite successfully during this period. Along with these we have a collection of lemon trees in large terracotta pots that scent the air inside the building where we house them over winter before displaying them outside on the gravel terrace over the summer months.

Over the autumn/winter months we have housed this collection in a polytunnel in our nursery and soon we will be reinstating them in a new display for our visitors in the spring. As you can see from the accompanying photos the Garden House now shines when viewed across the garden taking on the appearance of a newly iced wedding cake and all of the large windows have been repaired and reglazed with the balustrading at the top having much needed repair work carried out. We will be displaying many pots of bulbs on the external steps and also inside – many of them heavily scented – so come and visit and walk through its newly restored splendour.'

VALENTINE'S DAY

HOW TO CELEBRATE

Valentine's Day Jo Pratt says stay at home and cook something nice!

I’ve always been a huge fan of eating at home on Valentine’s Day. Going out to a busy, over-priced restaurant packed with numerous couples eating from a set menu is not my idea of a romantic night out. Staying in gives you the perfect chance to enjoy something a little special, indulgent or nostalgic for both you and your other half. The key is to avoid anything over complicated so you get

all stressed out and ruin the mood. Simple anti-pasti, tapas or even oysters to graze on is a good way to start, before moving on to a one-pot main course.

As for dessert, you really can’t go wrong with serving up some gooey indulgent chocolate brownies. Then you can do something really naughty, like leaving the washing up until the morning.

Jo Pratt

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE AND PECAN BROWNIES Impossible to resist, these chocolate brownies make a great dessert served warm with a scoop of ice-cream or crème fraiche. Alternatively, if you are trying to impress your Valentine with a surprise gift, giving a box of these wrapped with a ribbon will melt anyone’s heart.

Method

Jo’s Chocolate Brownies

Ingredients • 200g unsalted butter • 200g plain chocolate (about 70% cocoa solids), chopped • 3 large eggs • 300g granulated sugar • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 125g plain flour • pinch salt

16

Makes: 12 generous sized brownies

Pre-heat the oven to 180C/160C fan ovens/Gas mark 4 Grease and line an approximate 20x30cm rectangular, 3-4cm deep baking tin with greaseproof or baking paper. Place the butter and chocolate in a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water and leave to gently melt, stirring as little as possible, alternatively gently melt in the microwave.

• 150g white chocolate chunks, or chopped white chocolate • 100g pecan nuts, roughly chopped

Beat together the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract until they are lovely and thick and creamy. Pour in the melted chocolate and butter and mix in. Finally stir in the flour, salt, white chocolate and pecans. Pour into the baking tin and cook for 25 minutes until the top is cracking and the centre is just set. Leave to cool in the tin for about 20 minutes before cutting into squares.

VALENTINE'S DAY

STEAMED MUSSELS WITH CREAMY CIDER BROTH

Steamed Mussels with Creamy Cider Broth, photograph by Susan Bell

This is my fruity twist on the incredible French dish of moules marinières. Instead of white wine I’ve used cider, which works so well with the sweet juicy mussels, and the diced Bramley apple adds a sharpness to the creamy sauce. This isn’t easy to eat this elegantly, so you should just embrace it and use your fingers to pick up the mussel shells, and have plenty of fresh crusty bread on hand to mop up the juices.

Time: 30 minutes Serves: 2

Ingredients • 1 kg fresh mussels • 1 tbsp olive oil • 50g butter • 1 leek, finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed • 1 medium Bramley apple, peeled and diced

• 400ml sweet cider • 200ml single cream • 2 tsp Dijon mustard • Small bunch of flat-leaf parsley, chopped • Flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • Crusty bread, to serve

Method Wash the mussels and pull off any ‘beards’ that are attached at the end of the shell. Discard any mussels that are open and don’t close when lightly pinched together, and any with damaged shells. Place a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the olive oil and butter. When the butter has melted and starts to bubble, add the leek, garlic and apple. Sauté until the leeks are tender and the apple has started to break down to a pulp. Increase the heat and add the cider, cream and mustard, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then throw in

the mussels. Stir around, then cover the pan with a tightfitting lid. Cook for 3 minutes, shaking the pan a couple of times, then check to see if the mussels have opened. If not, replace the lid and continue to cook for a further 1 minute, or until the mussels are all open. Scatter over the parsley and divide between bowls. Discard any mussels that have refused to open. Serve hot, with crusty bread to mop up the creamy cider broth.

Jo Pratt is cook, food writer and TV presenter and one of several chefs who jointly run The Gorgeous Kitchen restaurant at Heathrow’s Terminal 2. ‘Steamed mussels with creamy cider broth’ comes from her latest book ‘The Flexible Pescatarian’, published by White Lion Publishing at £20, out 14th March 2019. She lives with her husband Phil and two children in Acton. Jo Pratt and husband Phil

writers & books Everyone has a story k - Intersaga Anna Klerfal

‘Everyone has a book in them and that, in most cases, is where it should stay.’ The line is attributed to the late journalist Christopher Hitchens, well known for his sardonic wit and devastating put downs, but it may have been recycled from an earlier acerbic cynic. It’s an argument which cuts absolutely no ice in Chiswick, whose population, undeterred by such negativity, seems to think they all have a story to tell

and the ability to tell it. That may be a slight exaggeration but there does seem to be a remarkable glut of authors in a relatively small area. Anna Klerfalk, who used to run Waterstones bookshop in Chiswick, has recently started a new literary agency, Intersaga. Within a week of its launch on The Chiswick Calendar website, she’d received ten manuscripts from people who just happened to have at least a first draft just ready to send. This comes as no surprise to Torin Douglas, Director of the Chiswick Book Festival. Every year, before the

main festival there is a local authors’ event at which writers who live locally get a minute to make an ‘elevator pitch’ about their book, many of which are self-published. It’s always well attended and there are usually thirty or so writers presenting work which ranges from children’s stories to biographies, historical novels to science fiction. “From the very first Festival, the writing and ‘how to get published’ workshops have been very popular and have led directly to books being published. Our last local authors evening at Waterstones was packed out” says Torin.

CHISWICK TIMELINE OF WRITERS AND BOOKS

Literary history The area has history in this respect. The eighteenth century English poet Alexander Pope lived next to the Griffin Brewery. Victorian novelist WM Thackeray went to school in Chiswick; in fact the opening chapter of Vanity Fair is titled ‘Chiswick Mall’, the location of the school where we first meet the social climbing Becky Sharp. In the 1870s and ‘80s Irish poet WB Yeats lived in Bedford Park, then considered a Bohemian artists’ colony. He remains the only poet writing in English and brought up in Great Britain to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature. You can raise a glass to him in the Tabard, which would have been his local pub and is still going strong. EM Forster, GK Chesterton, Harold Pinter, Dame Iris Murdoch, Anthony Burgess, Patrick Hamilton, John Osborne, Sir John Betjeman, playwright Sir Arthur Pinero (The Second Mrs Tanqueray) and famous socialite Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire are all writers who have connections with Chiswick.

Timeline Torin has recently put together a timeline of writers who have lived in Chiswick and written about the area. In the space of six months he has discovered there are more than 200 published authors who either live or have lived here. Borrowing the idea from the Chiswick Timeline creators Karen Liebreich MBE and Sarah Cruz, who did a similar thing with artists when they unveiled the mural under the railway bridge by Turnham Green tube station, he has also designed a trail featuring 21 acclaimed novelists, poets and playwrights. This select group includes two winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature (and

L@outandabout_mag

one nominee) plus one Booker Prize winner, three Oscar winners (and one nominee), a Poet Laureate and several blue plaques. Ralph Griffiths, the publisher of Fanny Hill is in there, (redeemed perhaps by the fact that he was also the publisher of London’s first successful literary magazine), but not E.L James. Perhaps she was considered beyond the Pale – not because 50 Shades of Grey was too smutty but she was literally beyond the Pale in Ealing. Did you know that Sergius Stepniak, the Russian writer who lived at Stamford Brook 1851-1895 is thought to have been the model for the Russian exile in The Railway Children? That Dame Iris Murdoch grew up in Chiswick? That John Osborne wrote Look Back In Anger while living on a houseboat at Chiswick Quay? Or that Harold Pinter wrote The Caretaker when he lived in a flat here? These interesting snippets and the locations where they lived are all marked on the trail map, which you can find by Googling ‘Chiswick Timeline of Writers and Books’.

Current residents in the timeline include novelists Sadie Jones, Rebecca Frayn and Colette McBeth, comedians Al Murray and Dara O’Brien, journalists Peter Oborne, Julia Langdon and Tim Marshall, and TV personalities Tom Mangold, Clare Balding and Jeremy Vine.

Brentford FOOTBALL CLUB Meet the players

Do you like football? What are your plans for half term?

Meet the Players

Brentford FC’s Community Sports Trust runs Soccer Schools, providing every participant with fun and technical football sessions during each half-term and also during term time. Along with developing their technical skills, children also improve their social skills. Promising young players are referred by the coaches to the football development department of the Trust, providing an opportunity for talented players to make the first step onto the football ladder towards elite football. The Trust runs separate male and female Football Development Centres and recently hosted a girls football festival with more than 70 girls from seven local schools taking part.

Each year the Brentford FC Community Sports Trust holds a Meet the Players Day, which this year will be at Uxbridge High School’s exclusive 3G indoor training facility from 12.45 until 6.45pm on Tuesday 19 February. The event is open to boys and girls in school years one to seven (those aged five to 13 years old). Participants will take part in a training session with the Trust’s FA qualified coaching staff in preparation for matches in the afternoon. After the snack-lunch and a warm-up, the Brentford First Team players will arrive and get stuck in to some small-sided games with young Bees’ fans, playing alongside them and offering a bit of coaching. The day will conclude with the opportunity to meet all the Brentford FC 1st team stars, get autographs and take photographs. Meet the Players day costs £35 per-player. Places are limited and can only be booked online. A first booking period is open between 21 January and 6 February. A second booking period will be available between 8 February and 12 February if spaces remain. HEN CORNER

Shake up WAKE UP Sara Ward on bee-keeping in Brentford There is something about springtime that wakens our energy reserves and calls us to step outside and breathe in the fresh air of hope and opportunity.

There are signs of life beneath the soil in the veg patch as the broad beans and garlic that we planted in late November are reaching for the sun each morning and the hens are back in lay because now, as the days are longer, they can eat enough to produce daily eggs as well as sustaining their own health. Their winter plumage is keeping them warm at night and they are enjoying regular free ranging as often as they can. The honeybees are out flying, whenever it’s warm enough for their little wings, scouring local gardens for the first nectar rich blooms, which will be almond and peach here at Hen Corner. This is the time of year when the bees need a Shook Swarm to spring clean their hives. Fortunately, bees are fastidious about hygiene, with every worker having a clear job description ensuring minimum waste and a speedy removal of detritus, but our springtime intervention is key to maintaining the health of the hive and probably explains why there are very few wild honey bee colonies around today.

Currently, the biggest threat to honey bees is the varroa mite, a small parasite that clings to the fur of a bee and, when opportunity presents, jumps into the cell of a developing larva knowing that soon it will be sealed up for metamorphosis allowing a whole week of feasting on the bee to be. Whilst this significantly weakens the poor bee, it also passes on viruses such as ‘Deformed Wing Virus’, which does exactly what it says on the tin. To prevent this, in March we shake the bees onto new clean frames allowing them to start from scratch in building up a new home at the beginning of the year. It is rather drastic, but as we burn the old frames, the mites hiding in sealed cells along with other viruses and parasites are destroyed allowing the colony to build up afresh, ready for the busy season ahead. If you fancy trying your hand at bee-keeping, or any of the other activities at Hen Corner, we run courses in Bee Keeping, Chicken Keeping, Bread Making and more and even have a special course to help you set up your own Micro Bakery.

EXHIBITION AT TURNER'S HOUSE

J.M.W TURNER

Exhibition IN TWICKENHAM

Lucinda MacPherson introduces us to the first exhibition of the great artist’s work at the house where he lived in Twickenham Step into Turner’s modest villa in Twickenham this February and be transported away from bleak news and miserable weather, travelling back in time and space by means of the artist’s sublime images of the Anglo-Scottish Borders and Western Highlands then onto the warmer climes of France and Italy. ‘Miniature Lands of Myth and Memory’, the first ever exhibition at the house since its recent, awardwinning restoration, shows Turner’s delicate, detailed illustrations of Sir Walter Scott’s work, part of the house’s permanent collection which is normally in storage. This inaugural show celebrates the successful collaboration of JMW Turner (1775-1851) and Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), arguably the most influential and successful artist and author of their day, with Scott’s much quoted poetry and prose breaking

publishing sales records and Turner, who had already risen meteorically to Professor at the Royal Academy, the master of light and romantic landscapes. This exhibition focuses on their last collaboration before Sir Walter’s death in 1832: Turner’s illustrations to the ‘Poetical Works’, and the artist’s next commission, Scott’s Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, penned shortly after the Napoleonic wars and Bonaparte’s death. Combining Turner’s exquisite scenes and Scott’s powerfully evocative text, visitors can go on a time-travelling journey through the north of England, the contested Border lands of England and Scotland and the wild Western Highlands. The miniatures are displayed in the rural retreat Turner designed for himself, following a trail of landscapes, antiquities, folk tales and ballads that inspired Scott’s poetry, before turning to recent history, and

images of France, Italy and the battle fields of Napoleonic Europe. The curator of the exhibition, awardwinning historian Dr Jacqueline Riding explained how she settled on the title: “Turner and Scott were uniquely suited; both viewed topography as landscapes of myth and memory, the silent witnesses of past ages and recent history. Turner’s exquisite engraved miniatures are a celebration of the source of Scott’s inspiration and extraordinary creativity.” ‘Miniature Lands of Myth and Memory’, which launches Turner’s House Trust’s programme of events for 2019, runs from Friday February 1st until Sunday July 28th 2019. Turner’s House, Sandycombe Lodge, 40 Sandycoombe Road, St Margarets, Twickenham TW1 2LR is open from Wednesday-Sunday: 12-4pm.

SILVER EXHIBITION AT OSTERLEY PARK

Made

FOR THE TABLE Silver exhibition at Osterley Park

Many of us will have had the table laid nicely for Christmas and New Year. How you interpret ‘nicely’ is of course a subjective matter, subject to personal taste and the prevailing standards of the time. 'Made for the Table' is an exhibition of silver tableware at Osterley House which shows how our ideas about beauty as represented in table decorations have changed from 1600 to the present day. The exhibition includes Osterley’s own rare and antique silver, typically ornate and ostentatious as befitted the status of Sir Francis Child, founder of Child's bank, whose family restored the house (originally Tudor but fallen into disrepair) in the late eighteenth century with the aid of architect Robert Adam. Among the collection is a solid silver wine cooler it apparently took five men

to carry. The exhibition also includes an exquisite collection of modern silverware from the Goldsmith’s Company. 'Made for the Table' is open until 24th February and the National Trust house, the cafe in the old stable block and the park, with its lake and landscaped gardens, is lovely to visit at any time. There is a programme of events for children and adults which includes painting coasters (18th February) mugs (19th February) and tealight holders (20th February) and preparing for a family dinner party (21st February). Exhibition photographer Rosalind Atkinson leads a half day workshop on photographing the perfect still life on 6th February and National Trust silver specialist, curator James Rothwell gives a talk on the exhibition on 11th February.

BREXIT ADVICE AND TRAVEL: It is impossible to discuss travel in 2019 without mentioning the potential implications of the Brexit negotiations. At the time of writing (17Jan) the industry advice is for all passengers travelling to Europe after 29 March to have a minimum of 6 months remaining on their passport on their date of return travel. Aside from this precaution it is expected that European travel will be largely unaffected. The latest advice can be found by visiting abta.com/tips-and-advice/ brexit-advice-for-travellers.
