WELCOME “In seed-time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.” ~William Blake from The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Wise words from Mr Blake, who recognized that there is much to enjoy during the winter months; when the landscape hides from colour, animals hibernate or set off for warmer climes, when the world slows down a little in its starkness. The solitude that winter can offer makes us reflect on the year just passed, and look forward to new experiences in 2016.

EDITOR’S TIPS An Open Invite In memory of the Tabla legend Pandit Sharda Sahai

Kaashi is the ancient name for the holy city of Benares (Varanasi) located in North Eastern India. It is a place where great intellectuals, spiritualists, musicians, artists, poets and thinkers developed their works, some thousands of years ago, that still hold relevance today. India is of course home to the city of Benares and to many other sources of rich history. Known for its complex society, its deep spiritual roots, its contradictions, its riches, its poverty, its food, its beautiful landscape and its bright white smiles it is truly a unique place on our wonderful planet. Kaashi Arts is an organisation dedicated to providing a platform for Asia’s riches to be displayed internationally.

What a year it has been – full of celebrations for local businesses at the Hounslow Business Awards in October, full of changes and growth both in out&about and the areas where we live and no doubt in our lives. There is something wonderfully comforting about winter, maybe because it asks us to unwind and come together at the same time with Christmas celebrations looming and the New Year full of promise and resolutions. Whatever year you’ve had, the team at out&about wish you a more contented, healthier, and joyous year than the last one. We hope that you will find many things to enjoy in 2016!

Nisia nisia@fhwem.com

We at Kaashi Arts would like to extend a warm invite for you to attend a show dedicated to the memory of the late maestro, Pandit Sharda Sahai ji of the Benares Gharana (School) of Tabla. Sri Sanju Sahai ji (Tabla) will be accompanied by Pandit Ramesh Mishra ji (Sarangi) - the pair will be paying homage to the legend in their own unique ways as son and nephew. Listeners will be taken away to the sacred banks of the River Ganges in Benares (Northern India). On the evening, Kaashi Arts are fortunate to be hosting special guests Ustad Dharambir Singh Dhadyalla, Pandit Vishwa Prakash, Manorama Prasad, Mehboob Nadeem, Chandra Chakrabarty, Bhupinder Chagger and Upneet Singh Dhadyalla - all to be performing on the night. Venue: Tabernacle in Notting Hill, 35 Powis Square (off Portobello Road), London W11 2AY

MINDFULNESS - HERE AND NOW James Muthana, owner of Yoga West on why and how to make it a mindful 2016 It feels like mindfulness is everywhere: apps, magazine books even celebrities. Over the last couple of years, mindfulness meditation, it seems, has gone from something practiced by a few people in the know to an inescapable part of daily life for many of us. So what is Mindfulness and why is it becoming so popular? “Mindfulness means paying attention, in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and non- judgmentally,” according to Jon Kabat-Zinn; a leading researcher and teacher. Its origins lie in Buddhist teachings on how to achieve enlightenment but the word itself is a translation of a phrase that refers to awareness and compassion. Over the last 20-30 years mindfulness has gained widespread acceptance as a practical skill to simply note but not engage with thoughts, physical sensations and feelings. Over time it allows us to see ourselves and what is around us more clearly and this can give us more choice over how we live our lives by replacing kneejerk reactions to what life throws at us with more considered responses. Its popularity is a response to the growing speed of modern life and to the amazing recent progress in research on how the brain operates. Firstly our lives are faster-paced and more non-stop than ever before. We are always connected and always trying to juggle work, home friends and money. It’s unsurprising that more people report feeling stressed and that there is a growing rise in stress-related physical and mental health problems.

8

Meanwhile incredible advances in neural imaging have allowed us to see how the way we live impacts our brains. What research by scientists at many of the world’s leading universities including, Harvard and Oxford have shown is that practicing mindfulness literally changes the physiology of our brains and there’s strong evidence it can help reduce stress, anxiety and depression, insomnia and improve focus, creativity, sleep and general wellbeing. If you’re interested in exploring mindfulness Yoga West has a number of ways to help you. On January 7 we are honored to host a talk on mindfulness by Mark Williams, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at Oxford University; one of the world’s leading authorities on mindfulness and the author of international best-seller Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World. Mark’ book is also available at Waterstones in Chiswick. Yoga West is also hosting a taster for those looking to try mindfulness with teacher Veronika Kloucek at 7.15pm on Friday 12 February and for those looking to build their own mindfulness practice Veronika is hosting an 8-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program on Thursdays at 8pm from 28 April.

PATIENCE

‘What if life’, her mother once mused, ‘was nothing but an endless wave? Would you choose to ride its crest? Or would you constantly allow yourself to be swept off your feet by events you know you could have controlled?’

for Filippo

A short story by Sophie Kalinauckas Patience dipped her toes into the crinkled water and began to imagine a place where you didn’t need oxygen to breathe. She wore her imagination like a backpack, it hung to her tightly, and heavy with wonders she couldn’t unpack. A salty breath crawled to the back of her throat and clung for a moment, clawed onto her windpipes. Slowly, she felt her body slowly restrict, a kind of dizziness crept into her eyes and the images before her circled rapidly round through her mind like paperclips capturing shimmers of blue and green. She held onto the sensation a little longer than she usually would. Something shook her, she gasped back into her reality and let oxygen pour deeply into her lungs, it was like a thirst she’d been clenching for a lifetime. It was a compulsion, which had awoken her escape. Her brain had forcefully attached to it, to her everyday life; it was a notification in her head to check her phone. It was her mother. ‘Where are you?’ She clicked off and drifted off to a memory planted deeply into her heart.

POETRY AND ABSTRACT ART A Dialogue between Poet and Painter Ways of Seeing Creative Writing Workshop Tues 8th Dec 10am – 1pm Fee: £25

This unique “taster” creative writing workshop is a fantastic opportunity for beginners and experienced writers of poetry or prose to explore their writing skills, develop new ideas and engage with and respond to

‘Your father was a wise and gentle soul, yet was of the latter discipline. As his wisdom grows within you, only then will you realise what I have given to you.’ Only when the daylight drew in, did her mind begin to enter its darkest hour. Patience began to sober. She now understood what her mother had meant all those years ago. Through gritted teeth, she rose into the once stifled air her reticence had created. The time for reflection, for stagnation and seeking affirmation, had ended. It was time to lead the waves, and reclaim her world. That was Patience. Sophie Kalinauckas is a London born writer and poet who has grown up between London and Greece. She currently works for Time & Leisure magazine whilst studying her MFA in Creative Writing at Kingston University. Her favourite colour is purple and her favourite animal is a penguin.

abstract art in new and creative ways. The workshop will be taught by poet, Agnieszka Studzinska and artist Sandra Beccarelli will provide insight into her motivation and processes as an abstract artist. We will look at how writers, primarily poets, have been influenced by art in their writing and how as a writer, you can respond to visual art through poetry. Participants will respond to Sandra Beccarelli’s paintings in her latest exhibition, Beyond the Surface of Seeing within the setting of Orleans House Stables Gallery. Agnieszka Studzinska’s debut collection of poetry, Snow Calling, was shortlisted for the London New Poetry Award 2010. Her second book, What Things Are was published in 2014.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE out&about has travelled around the local neighbourhood to bring you the latest independent coffee houses with a difference Tamp Coffee

Why did you start up Tamp?

Tamp is an old fashioned word which dates back to the days of fireplaces and pipe smokers. It means to gently compress and is the term used in all specialist coffee shops when compressing ground coffee into the coffee basket making it ready for extraction.

My background is in film and music. I used to work with documentary making in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil whilst also making music both here in London and Brazil. I started Tamp as I always had a passion for coffee and my second job as a struggling artist was making specialist coffee. I decided to swap my part time for my full time and my full time to my hobby.

How would you describe your coffee house?

Star attraction at Tamp?

What does Tamp stand for?

4th Wave. We study and look at coffee and all of its properties as a science. From the breakdown of the water molecules, which we pump into our machines, the latest technology implemented in our specialist equipment in order to control and manipulate the extraction accordingly to each flavour profile of each roast we use. We also select our beans and roasts with extremely high criticism in order to only serve the best on a daily basis. We do all of this but present it in a way which is unique and pleasant not only in our part of London but in the UK as a whole incorporating my south American roots and UK upbringing.

SIMBA! The most loved dog in Chiswick and my best friend and Guru. Also, our amazing staff and our San Remo Opera coffee machine (we have the only one in London!) What time is your first coffee?

My first coffee is usually around 4am or 5am when I get up. I have the pleasure of owning a lovely La Marzocco GS3 coffee machine at home, which makes fantastic espresso but I very much enjoy drip coffee made on a Kalita or Chemez.

What does Boki stand for?

It literally stands for Boris and Kim, the two owners of Boki. We have been close friends for 10 years. We met as runners in a Soho post production studio and quickly bonded over our love of good food, coffee and 80’s action movies. We both went off in different directions. Boris continued in the film industry, eventually setting up a Soho based production company; while I got into hospitality management, running, bars and cafes before moving to Sydney, which is where I was properly barista trained and fell in love with coffee. I returned to London and started to work as an illustrator and storyboard artist, frequently working with Boris’ production company. Over a few years, a germ of an idea started, to open our own coffee shop. How would you describe Boki Coffee?

VERDICT IN BRILLIANT BRENTFORD Local coffee house and dining experience in the heart of Brentford, a perfect meeting spot for the community Mensac, the co owner, along with Ivan Bilic, Aaron knew that this was the perfect location and setting, “I looked at it and I didn’t have a second thought, it was the vision we had for it, we had a wonderful space in which we could play out our vision. We did a pitch against three other competitors and were victorious.” Verdict prides itself on quality and not only sells freshly made artisan bread but local products, like honey and preserves, “What we are about is embracing local people and ideas. We have a sign on the blackboard that says ‘talk to us’ so if local people are making things then we want to know about it.” At the moment, Verdict has a slim menu, consisting of char grilled burgers, char grilled chicken breasts, rib eye steaks, fillet of sea bass, breast of chicken with a spring onion mash and pancetta but they are also working on gluten free options. “ It’s a first step, we are concentrating on getting the chemistry right, we are developing new menus and looking at new ingredients for the evening. There’s a striking difference in the evening at Verdict. In the larger dining room there are more formal, pre laid tables with candles on the tables, dimmed lights, and the smaller dining area is more laid back. You can have a coffee, a cake; whatever takes your fancy. Our chef has worked under Gordan Ramsey, he’s got a wealth of experience that we are going to maximize here.”

Brentford is changing; the high street is slowly but surely welcoming the gentle gentrification of its façade. The most recent addition is the redeveloped former courthouse in Market Square, which now houses, Verdict, a much needed, coffee and dining establishment. Verdict has been open for business for 6 weeks only but is already full with local mums, and professionals lunching. Aaron Durkin, co founder of Verdict, describes it as having a, “homely atmosphere, there’s a real hassle and bustle in the morings”. Indeed it is homely, but also stylish, the décor beautifully reflects the ambience of the building, embracing the historic with modern living. The journey to open Verdict was both difficult and rewarding. On seeing the building for the first time, shown to him by Alen

14

The potential for Verdict is enormous, they admit that they have a long way to go and are busy ’building things’ on their journey. They are discovering just how important Verdict is in the neighborhood. “We are beginning to get to know our customers and what they like, feedback is very important to us, having a menu that reflects a variety of tastes is paramount to us.” In the very near future, Brentford will no doubt see many more openings of new businesses, and coffee establishments growing, yet there is something very special about Verdict: its independence, attention to detail in both coffee, food, service, the community spirit it has embraced and the fact that they care about what they do.

GASTROEXCELLENCE BY THE RIVER BRENT

We catch up with Joanne Scully from The Weir Gastropub in Brentford… What was the reason behind the recent refit at The Weir?

The Weir site at Market Place, originally named The White Horse, is the oldest surviving licenced premises in Brentford, dating back to 1604. Our recent refurbishment gave this beautiful old building, and its original features, the love and care it deserved, whilst updating the decor and furnishings to add more ambience, style and most importantly comfort, in keeping with the old building. How would you describe the atmosphere of The Weir?

Having the different areas allows us to have different atmospheres all under one roof. Our customers can enjoy the ambience and professional, friendly service in the á la carte waterside restaurant, get dressed up for cocktails in our new cocktail bar, or just relax in the main bar with a newspaper and pint or a frothy cappuccino. In the summer, our riverside garden is the perfect place to chillout, we have also created a private river lounge for more formal ‘al fresco’ entertaining. Whatever mood you are in, you can find the perfect spot with friends, family or colleagues. We pride ourselves on our attentive service whether a romantic dinner for two or a large group booking for private or corporate entertaining. I am delighted with my entire team here at The Weir, they are a really hard-working group of great personalities, their attention to detail and friendly approach really makes The Weir a perfect place to unwind.

FRESHLY BAKED Hen Corner, the new bread angel in Brentford words: Sara Ward

As we turn the first page of a brand new calendar, it’s always good to look back at the previous year, giving thanks for the blessings and learning lessons from the challenges that we faced. 2015 was the first year of Hen Corner as a full time business. We’ve had three lots of building work to ensure that we have the best environment for welcoming guests and our new kitchen has proved to be the perfect resource for our weekly Micro Bakery.

We hadn’t really expected this new project to be so successful, when my friend Katie and I trained as Bread Angels with Jane Mason of Virtuous Bread back in September; it was purely to improve our skills and plan a baking day once a month giving friends the opportunity to buy our bread and buns. But with 30 customers on the first bake day and over 100 members in our Facebook group we are now baking every week with customers able to order in advance and collect their items as the weekend begins. It’s great to be doing this as a team. Katie generally makes the soft white dough for loaves and rolls, whereas I make the 50/50 loaves which involves blending white and wholewheat flours. Katie bakes the rye bread on a Wednesday (you should leave it a few days before slicing as it’s such a moist loaf ) whilst I prepare the sourdough using wild yeasts - that require a longer fermentation time to develop that delicious taste with a perfect crust. Each week we offer sweet buns, cinnamon swirls are always popular, and a savoury treat such

FEEDING LONDON New exhibition reveals the forgotten market gardens of South West London words: Stephen James

A new exhibition celebrates the long history of market gardening in South West London. The exhibition was co-produced by Jam Yesterday, Jam Tomorrow staff and volunteers of the Environment Trust. Feeding London traces the growth, peak and decline of the production of fruit, vegetables and flowers in the area. It reveals the rapid and radical change of land use arising from London’s evergrowing population, from the desperate need to increase food production in the 1800s, to the demand for housing for the new ‘commuter classes’ in the 20th century. A special feature is the sound-recorded memories of local people who worked in the nurseries and market gardens of Hounslow, Isleworth, Brentford, Twickenham and Hampton, right up until the last days of the industry in the 1970s. The stories are told of the great gardening dynasties of Middlesex, who developed horticultural expertise, built flourishing businesses and became major employers; along with those of the seasonal migrants such as the ‘Welsh’ women who walked every year from Wales and Shropshire to help with the harvest, and the skilled horticulturalists who emigrated from Europe.

The exhibition rediscovers the innovative methods of growing and the specialist varieties developed in the area, designed in order to produce more efficient, year-round crops, as well as to combat overseas’ competition. It looks at local markets as well as the various ways in which fresh produce was transported every day to Covent Garden. It shows the effect of World War Two on the industry, the Dig for Victory campaign and how prisoners of war were used as workers on the land. The coming of the railways in the

L@outandabout_mag

mid-1800s, the impact of new technology, such as motor vehicles, air-freight and refrigeration, and the legacies left by the industry in the area today, are also covered. Jam Yesterday, Jam Tomorrow is a Heritage Lottery Funded project that has undertaken many community-based activities in order to revive, and protect for the future, the forgotten history of market gardens. The project has created a volunteer-led model market garden at Marble Hill Park, which is open to the public. The garden has restored local heritage varieties using traditional 19th-century growing methods. It includes a Dig for Victory bed and ten community plots for people with no room to grow their own produce at home, and hosts open days and workshops, as well as free, recognised, horticultural courses for young people. The harvested produce has contributed to lunches at Age UK Richmond and is popular with visitors to the park. The project also includes a programme for schools, teaching children their hidden local history and encouraging them to grow their own food. Drama sessions have brought to life the social history of those that used to work in the industry, and heritage walks have revealed the locations and uncovered the fascinating history of nurseries, market gardens and their gardeners. The exhibition is open until 23rd December at the Library, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, off Kew Green (entry free), from where it will move on 11th January 2016 to Squire’s Garden Centre in Twickenham.

LOCAL HISTORY

THE LONG GOODBYE TO WORTON STUDIOS

was based in a barn-like structure, the largest film stage in Britain, which had ‘London Films’ written on the roof and could be seen for miles around. It was ‘Poppa’ Day’s expertise with the glass shot, a silent cinema technique, which merged two images into one (eg the lower storeys of buildings at full scale with the upper storeys in miniature), which enabled the creation of the futuristic Everytown. However, credit for this went to Denham.

Worton Studios played host to a series of classic British films, its significance should not be forgotten words: Linda Lingham Taylor

After a heady and hopeful beginning in the early days of silent cinema, by the 1930s, following the onset of talking pictures, Worton Studios had been reduced to making low-budget ‘quota quickies’. The land around the studio was changing too, suburban development having spread as far as Isleworth where ‘Tudorbethan’ semis had begun to swallow up the market gardens. But hope for Worton was at hand. The Hungarian, Alexander Korda, founded London Films and planned to build his own studio at Denham, but in the meantime, he leased Worton Hall.

Alexander Korda

Special effects were also used in The Ghost Goes West, starring Robert Donat, who returned to the studio after the war, in The Cure for Love. Other famous stars who passed through Worton’s doors included the silent comedian, Buster Keaton, in The Invader, and Erich Von Stroheim, in Under Secret Orders, which marked the debut of Stewart Granger. Winston Churchill visited to make a documentary about George V’s Silver Jubilee and met Korda in a nearby pub, most likely the Royal Oak. In addition, Paul Robeson, the famous singer and actor, appeared in Sanders of the River as a native chieftain, but despite location shooting in Africa, the interiors were shot in Isleworth using black dockers from Tiger Bay in Cardiff. Douglas Fairbanks Jr, keen to escape the shadow of his famous father, bought Isleworth Studios in 1936 (Korda having decamped to Denham). But his films were minor melodramas such as Accused, starring Dolores Del Rio and Jump for Glory, for which Greer Garson took a screen test, but subsequently declined. (‘Young Doug’ would return in 1950 to make State Secret).

Korda’s first film in Isleworth was H G Well’s Things to Come (1935) about a In 1940 the studio was requistioned for ‘brave new world’ built on reason and war work and became a ‘ghost factory’. But technology following a century of war. post-war, following the failure of Denham It starred Raymond Massey and was studios, Korda (now Sir Alexander, for Britain’s most ambitious film to date. Douglas Fairbanks Jr war work as Churchill’s secret courier) And although Worton itself was small, returned to Worton Hall. But as partits special effects department, founded by Ned Mann and owner of Shepperton Studios, he declared Worton merely Walter Percy ‘Poppa’ Day, was the best in the business. It ‘a useful adjunct’ and so once again, the studio’s record was

LOCAL HISTORY ‘airbrushed from history’. However, the summer of 1947 did see Worton briefly in the spotlight, playing host to the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. And still the stars came, including Diana Dors and Richard Burton, who made their film debuts, respectively, in The Shop at Sly Corner (1947) and The Last Days of Dolwyn (1949). In the same year, Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan could be spotted in the canteen whilst filming, I Was a Male War Bride. David Niven appeared in Bonnie Prince Charlie, for which Culloden Moor was recreated using 150 tons of soil and half a ton of bog moss. And in Anna Karenina, starring Vivien Leigh and Ralph Richardson, 126 tons of salt and 3 tons of perspex chips were needed for the snow scenes. In its last years, Worton played host to a series of classic British films including The Fallen Idol, starring Ralph Richardson and The Small Back Room, the latter made by the famous team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. However, in 1949, a collaboration between director Carol Reed and writer Graham Greene produced what has been called ‘the greatest British film ever made’: The Third Man. Starring Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, it was filmed on location in Vienna with interiors shot at Shepperton. However, whilst a replica of the Viennese sewers was built there, some scenes were shot in Isleworth, including a beer cellar and Harry Lime’s apartment. But the most famous film made at Worton was The African Queen, (1952) starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. In his autobiography, the director, John Huston, made much of the arduous location shooting in the Congo, but neglected to mention that filming was completed in decidedly less hazardous ‘darkest’ Isleworth. But, as usual, Shepperton claimed the credit, but according to Ed Harris ‘the greater part was shot in Isleworth’ and indeed, the final credit refers to Isleworth Studios! A large area of the Worton backlot was flooded, close to the back gardens of Worton Road, to recreate an African lake. A model of a German fort (the film was set during the First World War) was built on a thirty foot high artifical hill and the gunboat which Kate and Bogie’s characters were determined to sink, was set on a fifteen foot high scaffolding platform. In addition, mock-ups of the Queen, both stern and aft, were fixed to a scaffold on rockers to simulate the riding of the rapids whilst huge wooden shutes fired hundreds of gallons of water down on the stars. But Worton’s demise was swift. Final films included: The Gift Horse (Trevor Howard, Richard Attenborough); Derby Day (Anna Neagle, Michael Wilding) and Twice Upon a Time, the only film directed by Emeric Pressburger and the last released (1953) of all those made at Worton. The studios were sold to the National Coal Board and the site became a trading estate, a driving test centre and, latterly, housing. But

L@outandabout_mag

according to the personnel manager, Ted Higgins, the end had really begun back in 1948, when ‘the Big Stage’ had been moved to Shepperton, where it remains, second in size only to the 007 stage at Pinewood. And ‘that’, added Ted, ‘was goodbye to Worton Hall.’ But Ed Harris has ensured that credit has at last been given to the little ‘jobbing’ studio of Worton Hall, which nonetheless played a significant part in the development of the silent cinema (under Bertie Samuelson) and the Korda glory days of the 1930s as well as contributing to two of the greatest films ever made. And all that cinema magic really did happen, just up the road, in Isleworth. This article is based on Ed Harris’s recently re-published book, Britain’s Forgotten Film Factory (Amberley Publishing), which has done much to restore Worton Studio’s place in British movie history.

A CHRISTMAS THANK YOU Mike Moran reveals the secret behind Top Hat’s success You may ask why do we keep doing these things, Street Party, Halloween and now Mince Pies and Christmas Classic songs. Well it’s great fun, we raise money for local Charities and with the Mince pies in mind it’s our way of saying thank you to the community that has supported us in Chiswick for Decades. My parents taught me to say please and thank you and this is one small way we like to do it, Billy my Manager and strong right arm will spend his day off baking 100 or so mince pies that we will give to our customers and anyone else with a smile on their face on Saturday 5th December – we’ll also have a warming Winter Grog on hand to warm cold hands whilst you listen to Ray Lowe (you’ll remember him from the September Street Party) sing the classic Christmas songs from the 60’s.

For the past 25 years we’ve given customers a bottle of wine to say thanks but this year we will be donating the money spent on the wine to Acton Homeless Concern to help them in a small way to continue their excellent work. Yes we’re good at our job but we also care about those around us and think you can run a small business and put something back in to the community, it’s just part of what we do. 20 Devonshire Road Chiswick W4 2HD 020 995 9813 289 King Street Hamersmith W6 9NH 020 8741 2581

BEYOND THE SURFACE OF SEEING Isleworth based artist, Sandra Beccarelli shows us what lies beneath the image In the past, I have found that speaking directly with people looking at my work, particularly because it is abstract, helps them to have a better understanding of what the work is about, and to value and appreciate a wider variety of art in the future. Also, as artist and educator, I love to share my ideas with others. As an abstract artist, I create paintings, drawings and mixed media works based upon my own set of themes, rules and reasonings. I look toward nature as a starting point, but it is not the literal representation of a ‘scene’ or landscape, which inspires me, but a more poetic interpretation of what is happening within it. Cause and effect, order and chaos, structure and spontaneity are constant themes, as is the co-existence of light and dark and its continuous movements and shifts. The aim of the Beyond the Surface of Seeing exhibition at Orleans House Stables Gallery is to exhibit a body of work

THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL YEARS A local performance about local lives The Isleworth Community Play (ICP) is currently making preparations to rehearse and stage its third production ‘Isleworth: The Rock ‘n Roll Years’ about life in the 1950s in the local area. Songs have already been written for the production and the play is emerging from workshops that occurred in 2014/ 2015. ICP is an affiliation of local residents from Isleworth and surrounding areas who have successfully rehearsed and mounted two original musical plays, written and directed by Madeleine Casey from workshops conducted by her and others. The two plays are ‘Beautiful Dreamer’ about stories from local residents from the 1930s, staged at Isleworth and Syon School in 2012 and ‘We Can Do It’ about stories of Isleworth life in the 1940s staged at Gumley House School in 2014.

The show will also feature a star turn by Sammy the seal often seen down by the London Apprentice in those days. Nudes Calendar for Women’s Aid and Mankind Initiative Local artist and Hounslow Chamber member, Lesley Miller, has painted twelve people ‘nude’ and has put these paintings into a calendar for 2016. All proceeds from the calendar will be split between the charities Women’s Aid and Mankind Initiative. Domestic violence affects one in four women and one four men over their lifetime. It ruins and end lives and it costs millions of pounds to businesses. It’s a subject that is close to Lesley’s heart and she has set herself a target of selling 100. The calendars are available for a donation of a minimum of £10 and can be collected from South Street Coffee and Ice-Cream Shop, 2 Shrewsbury Walk, Isleworth TW7 7DE. Urban Planters supply plants and plant-related products to help green-up the office, workplace or home and sets aside a percentage of its profits every year to support local good causes. Grandmother Denise Marriott, started fundraising to build a trail in her granddaughter’s garden so that she could

explore nature at home. The recent £800 donation from Urban Planters has boosted the family’s funds to around £2,000, but with a target of £5,000 there is still some way to go. Director Liz Cabble said, “The company, were pleased to help in a small way as it is the type of project which supports the local community, it’s horticultural-based and a benefit to someone.”

LOCAL BUSINESS

THE RUGBY WORLD CUP Atmosphere and Legacy words: Elliot Mead

The Rugby World Cup seemed to capture the hearts and minds of the world which was a win, win for the sport. With teams like Japan and Argentina roaring to unprecedented success it was soon forgotten that England were out of the competition early on. The Rugby world was engulfed in fine displays of the game being played week in week out, but the real success story of this World Cup has to be the wider appeal which it has generated for the sport across the nation and across our home borough of Hounslow. For me personally this World Cup was somewhat of a rollercoaster ride of emotions as I am sure it was for many. With England going out so early I was afraid that the whole competition might lose its buzz, the eyes of everyone would turn away and people might lose interest. But no, the hype carried on, this year was such a spectacle of brilliant sportsmanship and skill that it seemed the whole world was gripped by rugby fever, especially here in Isleworth, so close to the centre of attention. I was lucky enough to celebrate throughout the whole tournament, not just celebrate rugby but celebrate the All Blacks as I have a kiwi mum, so at least I looked good in black. With Twickenham Stadium, the largest rugby specific stadium in the world, on our doorstep it was always going to be a struggle not to get caught up in the amazing atmosphere of the tournament. With a fan zone close by in Richmond’s Old Deer Park, rugby fans and newcomers to the sport alike could enjoy this celebration of sport. I really see these fan zones as the masterstroke by the organisers of England’s Rugby World Cup 2015; they were perfect for families, with rides and activities for the younger ones to try out their rugby skills, whilst on more anticipated match days and nights the fan zone became a hubbub of celebration between fans of all denominations. These zones really added to the competition for those of us not lucky enough to secure tickets to the fortress itself and I know they enticed a lot of friends who before the tournament had never watched a match in their lives, as well as the long standing fanatics of the oval ball. This World Cup also left our borough with a legacy for the future with the “All Schools” programme, run by the Rugby Football Union (RFU), being put into place across schools in Hounslow. Cranford Community College has been

40

awarded the ‘Gold Standard’ by England rugby great and World Cup winner Jason Leonard. Hounslow’s schools have a history of rugby and now thanks to this programme the sport will be rolled out in more of our borough’s secondary schools, giving those young people whose imaginations were captured by the past six weeks of sport the opportunity to learn more about the game and develop their skills. Who knows? Maybe one day some of Hounslow’s own could be stepping out onto that hallowed turf to represent their nation. The opportunities for people of all ages to play rugby in Hounslow are huge. With most schools now coaching the game at some level it forms a neat step up to playing for a local club side and developing further, Grasshoppers and Staines both boast a great juniors and mini’s sections. I can personally vouch for this, having played for and against them at a more tender age. The chances for adults, either first time or seasoned veteran, to pick up the sport are also great. Hounslow is lucky enough to host five rugby clubs playing seniors rugby and the Harlequins Ladies side also play in our borough. I personally am proud to play my rugby at Old Isleworthians and before that I played for Grasshoppers and so I can wholeheartedly say that Hounslow is an amazing place to pick up the game at literally any age and any skill level, we take them all. Rugby has truly come to Hounslow over the past two months and with the work that the RFU have been doing in conjunction with the Hounslow Council, local schools and local rugby clubs, I can really see it sticking around for a while yet. So let’s produce some rugby greats in our little corner of London and give England a fighting chance for the future. So, not to sound like an insurance claim advert but, if you’ve been seriously inspired by the Rugby World Cup 2015, get out there, find a club and pick up a ball; it’s fun, it’s social and what’s more, it’s good for you.
