WELCOME And just like that we have almost reached the halfway point in the year. The saying that time flies by as you get older certainly seems to be true. But before we rush headlong into the summer holidays, and then before we know it autumn, let’s pause and take some time to enjoy the longer days and the warmer weather. In this edition we chat to Joe Moruzzi, founder of Epsom-based company Pleesecakes. With an Instagram feed that will leave you salivating and an army of celebrity fans, including the Body Coach Joe Wicks and This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, Joe, and his business partner Brendon Parry, have come a long way since quitting their jobs as painters and decorators and elevating the humble cheesecake to a whole new level. Now with a book in the pipeline and Selfridge’s stocking a range of Pleesecakes in their flagship London store, the boys have their eyes set on the future. Comedian Tim Vine is known for his rapid fire puns. So much so that he once held the Guinness World Record for the most jokes told in an hour – 499, in case you’re wondering. He is taking time out from his current UK tour to perform on home soil as one of the fantastic acts taking part in the Banstead Arts Festival. See page 17 for more details. We will also be looking ahead to the second Carshalton Artists’ Open Studios, which will pay tribute to Pop art’s forgotten artist, Pauline Boty, and we learn how the Epsom-based charity, Look Good Feel Better, helps restore laughter and confidence to thousands of women undergoing cancer treatment.

PLEESECAKES

Pleesecakes Reinventing puddings – one cheesecake at a time

Take one look at Pleesecakes' Instagram feed and you will have serious food envy.

The custom-made cheesecakes, topped with everything from pick and mix to a savoury cheeseboard, have elevated the humble pud to new heights and garnered something of a cult following. With celebrity fans, including TV presenter Emma Willis, cyclist Mark Cavendish and This Morning’s Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, to name but a few, not to mention having created a cake for The Queen, it is no wonder the Epsom company is in demand and has more than 100,000 followers on the social media channel. Hard to believe then that the business was initially set up by Joe Moruzzi as a sideline to his painting and decorating firm. It all started three years ago when Joe’s dad made a cheesecake. “It was ok,” says Joe, “but it wasn’t great. Then I attempted to make one. I carried on making cheesecakes for family and friends for a couple of years trying out different fillings and toppings.” Then last January, Joe took a leap of faith, he came up with a name and logo, set up an Instagram account and, thanks to a mention by old school friend Joe Wicks – aka The Body Coach – suddenly had orders coming in. “He gave us a shout out on Instagram and we had 15,000 followers in our first week.”

PLEESECAKES “It’s crazy,” adds Joe, when he looks back at how the business has taken off and how much he has learned by being thrown in at the deep end. A painter and decorator by trade, Joe has no professional catering training, just a passion for food. “Every cake has been freestyled,” he says. “Initially we put it out to our followers asking them what toppings we should put on the cakes. We had some off the wall requests from banana and Marmite to crisps on a cake.” Shortly afterwards a set menu of tried and tested flavours and toppings was introduced, but if you have something more unusual in mind there is always a fully customised cheesecake option. Starting out Joe enlisted his friend and business partner Brendon Parry to help him grow Pleesecakes. The pair worked almost round the clock to keep up with orders, initially working from Brendon’s house, and then having a spot in the kitchen at Blacks Burgers in Epsom, which stocks a range of mini cheesecakes. A short-term arrangement, Pleesecakes moved to new premises last summer and now has a small team – two pastry chefs, soon to be three, an administrator and Joe’s mum who does deliveries within a 50-mile radius of Epsom. Brendon has returned to painting and decorating, for the time being, but has played a huge part in the growth and success of the business, which celebrated another first in March when it launched a range of mini Pleesecakes in Selfridges. “It’s a massive step up to supply Selfridges, even just a range of six different flavoured mini cakes,” said Joe, who is in talks to roll out the range to other Selfridges stores. There is also a book in the pipeline, due out this October and featuring 60 recipes with everything from savoury options, like a curry cheesecake, to vegan dishes. And now a crowdfunding appeal to raise £100,000 investment enabling the business to expand its premises, focus on developing branding and its website and introduce a more efficient order process. “Up until this point the business has been completely selffunded,” said Joe. “The amount of sacrifice you have to put in to run a business on a national and global scale is something else. But if people out there want to try something different, if they’re bored with their jobs and the 9 to 5, if we can encourage people to do that then it’s a massive bonus.”

ADVERTORIAL

THE BENEFITS OF SELF-PAY Providing the peace of mind of private health care in a way that suits you and your finances ‘Self-pay’ is a term used to describe someone who chooses to pay for their treatment directly rather than using private health insurance. It is an option if you don’t want to pay a monthly premium, have a chronic or pre-existing condition or fall within an insurer’s list of exclusions. You may prefer to self-pay if you are over a certain age as health insurance premiums increase the older you get. Hospitals don’t restrict your ability to selfpay because of your age. Self-paying means that you only pay for the treatment you need. If you want to self-pay for treatment then, first of all, you need to be referred by your GP. Some private units or hospitals have access to their own GPs which can speed the process up, but your GP will be more familiar with your medical history and is the best person to advise you about this. The next step requires you to shop around hospitals to obtain quotes and agree upon a price for your treatment. If you are having surgery then this is known as ‘fixed price surgery’. This will take the form of a contract which sets out what is included, and what isn’t so you know exactly what you are paying for.

L@outandabout_mag

This contract includes the following, and will be presented to you at the end of your treatment:

• • • • • •

Private room Nursing care Theatre time Drugs used Dressings used Costs incurred because of complications

It doesn’t include:

• • • • •

Pre-operative tests Consultation fee Anaesthetist fee Costs of post-treatment medication Personal extras such as phone calls, meals for guests etc.

Your treatment can be arranged at a private hospital or clinic. You will probably be asked to settle your account before undergoing treatment.

MY PAINTING ADVENTURE Deborah Kreczmer talks about her experiences and the techniques that have made her an accomplished and sought-after artist “I well remember our art block at school. Old trodden-down wooden floorboards splattered with the paint of a thousand failed projects. Pots, posters, paints and brushes everywhere.” Growing up Deborah had a great interest in art, but was never fully inspired by the art teacher or the surroundings. “I always wanted to paint something completely different and at the time I had a fascination with pattern and design,” she recalls. Aged 17, having sent her portfolio to St Martin's School Of Art, she was offered an interview, but never went. "I don’t know why, I think it was nerves or a lack of confidence,” she laments.

and being free with my work. I do not want my paintings to be so exact and this is where mixed media will come into play allowing for those happy unexpected surprises. “For me it is important to never stop learning. I often attend artist’s workshops and paint on my travels, especially in Cornwall and the Greek Islands. It is always a pleasure when someone buys one of my paintings and truly inspiring,” she adds.

Deborah’s life began to move in a different direction; a career and then a family, but when her daughter started school she began a City & Guilds art course. “I learned a lot, but wanted to progress.” By jumping into the world of mixed media she added a new excitement and energy to her work. “Using acrylics, inks, pastels and collage allowed me to develop, always ready to take on a new challenge or approach,” she explains. “There is a process I will usually follow when planning a painting. It includes sketches, or other source material such as my photos. A composition for a simple still life could be pondered over for hours. Equally, my love of colour plays an important role and is essential for the mood I want to create, but there is a fine line between planning

NONSUCH TOWN & COUNTRY SHOW

Nonsuch

TOWN & COUNTRY SHOW Fun for all the family – even four-legged friends

There will be more cookery demonstrations from Italian chef Claudio Bincoletto and a wealth of produce from artisan producers to sample in the Food and Drink Market. The ever-popular Festival of Dogs also makes its return to Nonsuch. It’s a dog show that doesn’t take itself too seriously with classes including the Best Mover and Waggiest Tail. Bring your pooch to the show and enter on the day or sign up for the Dogs Have Got Talent contest, chase the bunny and have a go agility course, which will be running on both days. Dima and his Dancing Dogs, finalists in last year’s Britain’s Got Talent, will also be entertaining the crowds.

It’s billed as the show with something for everyone and Nonsuch Town and Country Show certainly does not disappoint. The event returns to picturesque Nonsuch Park, Cheam, for the third year this May with an action-packed programme. Demonstrations of rural crafts, a Living History Camp and motorbike stunts are just some of the attractions taking place over the bank holiday weekend. There will also be performances in the main show rings, including a chance to see the adrenaline-fuelled National Horseboarding Championships, plus the World of Wings birds of prey display. Head to the cookery demonstration tent to catch 2017 Great British Bake Off winner Sophie Faldo sharing some of her baking tips when she whips up a recipe or two on Monday, May 28. Fellow GBBO contestant Julia Chernogorova will be making a guest appearance at the show on Sunday, May 27.

14

There will be plenty to keep the youngest family members happy too. They can get up close to amazing reptiles and animals in the petting farm, watch rural crafters and learn new skills in the Bush Adventures area. New to the show this year is the Living History Camp re-enacting 18th century living with displays and demonstrations throughout the show. As part of the show’s Living History Schools project, children who come along to the show dressed in historical outfits on the bank holiday Monday will be allowed in free.

Nonsuch Town and Country Show, Nonsuch Park, London Road Entrance, KT17 2DL, May 27 and 28, 11am-6pm. Tickets available online at www.nonsuchcountryshow.co.uk

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY New lease of life for Epsom Common Working Men’s Club 1,600 and Epsom Common Club is one of a handful of surviving clubs in the area. It recognised the need to modernise its facilities and assure its future financial security. Two adjoining cottages, which the club had been using for storage, were put up for sale as a way of funding the project to renovate facilities on the existing site. Entrepreneurs Dan Nelson and Matt Harverson saw an opportunity for their first project. It’s been a part of community life since the late 1800s. Now Epsom Common Working Men’s Club is looking to the future after a redevelopment. The club, which sits in the heart of Epsom’s Stamford Green conservation area, is currently closed while building work continues to upgrade its facilities, including a new snooker room and members’ bar. Its origins date back more than 130 years to 1880 when the Lord of the Manor, James Stuart Strange, provided the funds for the construction of the working men’s club. The Reverend Henry Solly is credited with founding working men’s clubs – private social clubs which members paid a subscription to join – in 1862. They were a place for working men and their families to meet and enjoy educational and recreational activities. Since then the clubs have evolved – membership is now also open to women – but in recent years they have suffered a decline in fortunes. In the 1970s there were more than 4,000 affiliated CIU clubs. Today that figure has fallen to under

16

They established their property development company, Harnel Group, with the aim of supporting community projects. As Epsom residents they felt this scheme perfectly fitted the bill. Having purchased the period cottages to restore them to residential homes, they also won the contract to carry out the demolition and enabling work for the club. Work on both schemes started in late 2017 and was completed last month. Dan said: “Stamford Green is the jewel in the crown of Epsom and this is a fantastic first project for us as a small business. “Our vision is to work with communities with projects such as this and we hope for many more.” If you are interested in joining Epsom Common Club, visit the club once it reopens to enquire about membership, or follow the club’s Facebook page /epsomcommonclub

POP ART`S FORGOTTEN ARTIST Carshalton artists to pay tribute to pioneer Pauline Boty At the start of the swinging 60s the art scene was in the throes of change. An antithesis to fine art, the Pop art movement drew on imagery and objects from popular culture to question ideas and challenge what was perceived as art. While the names of Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake and David Hockney have stood the test of the time, one of the influential artists of the time – a founding member of the British Pop art movement, Pauline Boty – was largely forgotten, until recently. A retrospective exhibition of her work in 2013, almost 50 years after her death at the age of 28, saw a resurgence of interest in Boty’s work and rightly put her back in the spotlight.

Boty was born in Carshalton on March 6, 1938. She studied at Wallington High School for Girls before enrolling at Wimbledon School of Art. To coincide with the 80th anniversary of her birth, Carshalton Open Artists’ Studio (CAOS) will be paying tribute to Boty’s work this June. Each of the 40 artists taking part in the open studios event will be creating a Pop art-inspired collage, which will be exhibited alongside pieces by students from Wallington High School for Girls and St Philomena’s at Carshalton’s Frith Gallery and gift shop Calladoodles. Neal Vaughan, who organises CAOS with his wife, Helena, said: “The

Carshalton connection is not very well known. “Pauline Boty was a rising star on the art scene and the film scene having appeared in the film, Alfie. She was known as the ‘Wimbeldon Bardot’. She was a founding member of the British Pop art scene and then she just disappeared.” Boty married the literary agent Clive Goodwin in 1963 and two years later, when pregnant, was diagnosed with cancer. She declined chemotherapy treatment and died a few months after the birth of her daughter, Katy. After her death, Boty’s paintings were stored in a barn at her brother’s farm and her work and legacy was largely forgotten. “It is only in the last seven years that her work has come to public attention,” says Neal. Over two weekends, more than 40 artists will open the doors to their workshops or studios, enabling the public to see works in progress. There will also be workshops, family activities and demonstrations at art galleries, venues and businesses across the village. Art trails, taking in attractions including the newly refurbished Arts and Crafts-style property Little Holland House, Honeywood Museum and Carshalton Water Tower, will link up a series of studios. The Open Studios event will run over the weekends of June 23 and 24 and June 30 and July 1.

ASHTEAD JAZZ CLUB

BLUES & ROOTS Ensemble brings music of jazz legend Charles Mingus to Ashtead It is said that Charles Mingus’s audiences never knew quite what to expect, and that is what kept them coming back. His music, a heady mix of blues, gospel, swing, bop and modern classical, veered from improvisation to composition and was noted for its rapid changes in tempo. Not only was Mingus unrivalled as a bass player, he was also an accomplished pianist, bandleader and composer. His work lives on through the Blues and Roots Ensemble, a group of internationally renowned musicians that take their name from Charles Mingus’s seminal long-player. Led by double bassist Ed Babar, the seven-piece ensemble capture the spirit of the great Mingus bands through their energetic performances that include everything from raucous open improvisation sections to soulful ballad playing. The band performs original and creative arrangements of Mingus’s music, from his earliest blues influences to his advanced, socially inspired compositions from the 1950s onwards. Established in 2016, the Blues and Roots Ensemble have quickly made a name on the jazz circuit, performing at some of London’s most prestigious jazz clubs. Catch them on stage when they return to Ashtead Jazz Club on May 25.

LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Helping women face cancer with confidence Applying a dash of lipstick before you leave the house can be part of a daily routine that shows you are ready to face the world, but for Epsom-based charity Look Good Feel Better, make-up is something more: it helps restore confidence every day to women undergoing cancer treatment. Discussing the virtues of different lipsticks while testing products in front of a mirror, at first glance a Look Good Feel Better workshop could be mistaken for a beauty counter. But for the women taking part, the two-hour workshops are time away from medical appointments and invasive cancer treatments, time to spend forging friendships and to look and feel like themselves. Look Good Feel Better is the only international cancer charity that provides practical support for women and teenagers experiencing the visible side effects of cancer treatment.

Since 1994, when the charity launched in the UK, holding its first workshop at the CancerKin Centre in the Royal Free Hospital, London, it has helped more than 150,000 women and teenagers. It now runs free make-up workshops in 100 locations across the UK, alongside more than 300 masterclasses, with separate sessions for teenage patients. “A lot of people say they lose their sense of self,” says regional co-ordinator Amanda Dixon-Nuttall, describing the impact of treatment. Hair loss, including the loss of eyebrows and eye lashes, is one of the most difficult aspects to come to terms with as it is intrinsically linked to how we look, Amanda explains. During the workshops volunteer beauty therapists will share tips on how to enhance or create brows and lashes as well as techniques for nail and skin care. “At the start of the workshop the ladies will come in and they will be quite subdued. Sometimes they will be visibly quite nervous. They will have their heads covered.” Halfway through a workshop and Amanda says the dynamics completely change, noise levels will rise as the women bond, swapping stories, laughing and chatting about the products in the gift bags they each receive. “By the end of the session they will have their wigs and scarves off. Afterwards people say, ‘I’ve found myself again. My confidence has returned’.”

LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER

For Amanda there is a very personal reason for getting involved with the charity. Four years ago she saw an article about LGFB while recovering in hospital after mastectomy reconstruction surgery.

to lose my hair.’ By the second week it was starting to fall out. I embraced my baldness, it is a repercussion of the chemotherapy. Everyone treats it differently.

“There’s nothing like a cancer diagnosis that makes you think ‘what have I done with my life’,” she says.

“I found I could have flair. I attended a scarf tying workshop at Kingston Hospital and learned how to make it look pretty.”

Having trained as a beauty therapist and worked for Clinique for a number of years she had the skills the charity was looking for and wanted to give something back.

“With cancer you look in the mirror and think ‘well, I am here’,” she added, saying that having the opportunity to look like yourself is what makes LGFB special.

She now runs monthly workshops at Kingston Hospital and looks after a loyal group of volunteers. "For myself, and a lot of the volunteers, we have all been touched by cancer, whether it is ourselves, a family member or friend, we have all known somebody. “We are using our skills to make a difference to people going through treatment. It is fantastic to see the change in the ladies’ faces.” Raia Mayor is one of those ladies. She attended a LGFB workshop at Kingston Hospital and said she came away renewed. “Cancer just takes from you all the time,” she says. “I don’t really use make-up so it was fantastic to have real experts there. They all volunteer, which just blows me away.” Raia was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2016, shortly after discovering a lump in her armpit. “Luckily for me, it had gone to my lymph nodes otherwise we wouldn’t have known.” She is, however, still feeling the effects of treatment having undergone six rounds of chemotherapy followed by surgery and radiotherapy. “A lot of people have saved me along the way, she says. “The first time I had chemotherapy I said ‘I’m not going

SCHOOLS

GOING THE EXTRA MILE Pupils dig deep for Sport Relief Inspired by their sporting heroes, pupils at Epsom Primary and Nursery School donned their trainers and got moving to raise hundreds of pounds for Sport Relief. Staff and students at the school, in Pound Lane, took part in a one-mile walk or run, many gaining sponsorship from family and friends to raise extra money.

There was also a ‘Sporting Bake Off ’, which was judged by members of the school council. The winner was year 5 pupil Jessica Lowman, with year 1 pupil Henry Williams the runner-up. The day of fundraising was rounded off with a cake sale. Event coordinator Denice Reynolds said: “There was a definite buzz and real community team spirit across the whole of the day’s events. Finance assistant Mrs Wilkinson, a few of the pupil leaders and myself were rushed off our feet rushing from one activity to the next.” The final fundraising tally was in excess of £680 with the money going to support Sport Relief projects across the UK.

VIOLIN MASTERCLASS Classical violinist Nicola Benedetti dropped in to Manor House School, Bookham, to deliver a masterclass to senior music scholars. The three girls rehearsed and played a solo piece to the celebrated musician, a double Classical BRIT Awards winner.

28

Ms Benedetti also led a workshop providing technical advice, inspiration and tips to pupils in the orchestra and string groups before taking part in a Q&A and treating students, teachers and parents to a solo performance.
