LOCAL CHARITY
LOVE ME, LOVE MY MIND
Community was brought in. We are looking to the future and hoping that one day Epsom will be the best place for mental health and the best place for mental health care. The first Epsom Mental Health Week broke new ground. After eight years the basic format remains the same: a week of talks, workshops, creative times, singing, drama, sport, friendship, all focused on mental health and mental distress, trying to normalise reaction to mental distress and provide resources. But each year the week has grown and developed and in 2017 we hope to celebrate our 10th anniversary with an Epsom Festival. Watch this space!
Charity puts spotlight on mental health
This year’s theme is Mental Health in a Changing World. What new pressures and challenges are people facing day to day?
A range of events designed to combat the stigma surrounding mental health will be held during Epsom Mental Health Week. Organised by the charity Love Me Love My Mind, activities including yoga, art, music workshops and creative writing will take place between October 8 and 16. Reverend Sue Bull, who chairs the charity, talks to out&about. Why was Love Me Love My Mind set up?
Love Me Love My Mind is a registered charity, which was set up to try and break down some of the stigma which there can be around mental distress; provide support to people; and help build community. What is the focus of the charity’s work?
We run a weekly drop-in on a Monday evening. All are welcome. We share the joys and sorrows of life, celebrate birthdays, and decide together how we would like to run the group. Each week begins with tea, coffee and cake. There is then an activity or outing followed by a home-cooked meal. There is a smaller drop-in on Wednesday morning when we have tea, coffee, cake and singing. On Wednesday evening, Let’s Talk Epsom happens: a group for people experiencing stress or anxiety. All meetings are at St Barnabas Church, Temple Road, Epsom. How has Epsom Mental Health Week grown over the past nine years?
Epsom Mental Health Week grew out of our initial work of trying to bring together mental health professionals, carers, people experiencing mental distress and other members of the public. Epsom has a history of mental health care: the Epsom cluster was one of the largest groups of hospitals for people with mental health issues and learning disabilities in Europe. The hospitals gradually closed as Care in the

The theme of Mental Health in a Changing World hopefully reflects how life is at the moment for many people. We live in a rapidly changing world and possibly few people could have predicted how the world was going to change in the last few years. Change can bring both opportunity and challenge, and change can affect us for good and for ill. How do we respond to this changing world we find ourselves in? Is there a growing number of young people affected by anxiety and low self-esteem due to social media?
One of the changes is in social media, which can be both a force for good and for ill. How do we support our young people as they grow up in an environment which was unknown to earlier generations? And yet the essential aspects of life: love, friendship, home, relationships, purpose, meaning, beauty, hope and also the sorrows and pains remain the same. One of the events will be looking at how the media can change perceptions of mental health issues.
The media can be a force for good - informing, encouraging debate, enabling new ways of thinking - but stigma can still be present in the media in implicit and explicit ways. Is there still a stigma associated with mental health issues?
There is still stigma attached to mental distress and there is a very long way to go before there is parity between the resources available to people experiencing mental/emotional distress and physical distress. Are people aware of the triggers?
We all respond to different things in different ways. Knowing what are our particular triggers can be helpful. All of us are on a spectrum of mental health and any of us can experience mental distress at any time. Love Me Love My Mind works to say ‘you are not alone’.

RECIPE FOR
Nothing beats the aroma of freshly baked bread just out of the oven. Rhiannon Abbott, of Epsom Bakehouse, shares her passion for the humble loaf come to the classes,” said Rhiannon. “When they take a freshly baked bread out of the oven that they have made it is always a ‘wow’ moment.” As well as an Introduction to Bread Making course, Rhiannon runs sourdough and Italian bread courses and is looking to introduce a festive baking class later this year. Class sizes are small, allowing plenty of time for questions and baking. Afterwards students get to take home all the bread they bake plus detailed notes and recipes to try out at home.
Baking is a bit of a love affair for Rhiannon Abbott. From an early age she helped out in the kitchen, joking that her mum put her to work when she realised her pastry skills. So when she left her job at the end of 2012 and was looking for a new challenge she spotted an opportunity to turn her hobby into a new career.
With Great British Bake Off back on our screens are more people taking an interest in baking their own loaves? Rhiannon thinks so and added: “I’m really excited Great British Bake Off is back. It reminds people that they can get into the kitchen and they can get baking. It goes back to that sense of achievement that from a few simple ingredients, which is essentially the case with bread, you can produce something really fantastic.”
Epsom Bakehouse, info@theepsombakehouse.co.uk, www.theepsombakehouse.co.uk
Rhiannon signed up for a microbakery course run by Bread Angels, learning how to set up and run a baking business from home. After completing the course, she set up Epsom Bakehouse and started out selling her freshly baked bread to a loyal band of customers at Epsom Farmers’ Market. Today her business has taken a different tack and she now passes on her bread-making skills through a series of classes. Classes are suitable for all abilities and teach the hands-on techniques for baking bread at home. “I really enjoy teaching and meeting the different people who

Herbalist Herbalist Jenny Jenny Harper Harper shares shares tips tips and and recipes recipes for for using using herbs herbs for for wellbeing wellbeing
Foraging for native herbs for her business, Jenny Harper quickly realised she needed to find a growing space. She struck lucky as part of Sutton Community Farm’s FarmStart programme, as she tells out&about. What sparked the idea for Herb Infusion Co?
Herb Infusion Co was formed in 2013 but it really took off when I got a growing space. I was already a volunteer at Sutton Community Farm from its genesis. The farm became a food growing business incubator with support from the Carnegie Trust. I applied for its FarmStart programme and was given a growing space for the year in 2015 along with tutelage from the chief grower from the farm and manager. I started growing herbs and selling them in teas at markets. The business has continued to grow and I have a symbiotic relationship with the farm. I provide teas to go in their veg boxes.
the Surrey Hills. You have to be careful not to pick things that are endangered. It is my favourite part of the job really. Which native herbs can be found locally?
Hedgerow herbs, elderberries, nettles, low growing greens, plantain, cleavers, chickweed and St John’s Wort – because it covers the chalk hills – are the most abundant herbs. Are people becoming more interested in where their food comes from and sourcing produce locally?
Definitely. People are becoming more aware, perhaps through global situations like the Amazon destruction, that we don’t necessarily need to ship in our superfoods from abroad. They are grown in abundance here. People are more concerned about sourcing things locally and connecting with the land.
www.suttoncommunityfarm.org.uk
What herbs do you use for the seasonal teas you produce?
The winter tea has elderberry and hawthorn berries, orange peel, the only non-native ingredient in the tea, hand-dried from oranges sourced from organic Spanish farms, bay leaf and heartsease. It’s a fruity, spicy tea for winter. The spring tea has nettle leaf and dandelion leaf with cowslip flowers and violet and is very cleansing. In summer there are two blends of tea – lemon verbena, strawberry leaf and marigold and mint and rose petals because there is so much more choice in summer. The autumn blend is the last of the four and is still in my head. How easy is to forage for herbs?
It is relatively easy. I find it very, very easy to forage around

1 The Girl Who Saved Christmas by Matt Haig
Matt Haig wrote A Boy Called Christmas last year about how Santa became Santa. This year’s fantastic offering is The Girl Who Saved Christmas. These are two future classics that are perfect for the six to 12 age range. If magic has a beginning, can it also have an end? When Amelia wants a wish to come true she knows just the man to ask - Father Christmas. But the magic she wants to believe in is starting to fade, and Father Christmas has more than impossible wishes to worry about. Upset elves, reindeer dropping out of the sky, angry trolls and the chance that Christmas might be cancelled. But Amelia isn’t just any ordinary girl. And - as Father Christmas is going to find out - if Christmas is going to be saved, he might not be able to do it alone. Hardback £12.99, published November 3, Canongate

4 A Library of Lemons by Jo Cotterill
This book is perfect for those from 10 to 16. I should warn you that it made me cry twice, but in a good way. Jo loves writing for all ages and has published more than 20 books. A Library of Lemons is a book from the heart about making connections and what it really means to be human. This is a poignant story about dealing with grief through the magic of reading and friendship. To tell you any more would give away the plot and I don’t want to do that. This book is brilliant. Trust me, I am a bookseller. Paperback £5.99, Piccadilly Press
5 My Counterfeit Self by Jane Davis
From the award-winning author of Halftruths and White Lies and An Unknown Woman comes an emotional story of hidden identities, complicated passions and tangled truths. Poles APART Originally used by elite cross-country skiers to train during summer months, Nordic walking is taking off on these shores. We catch up with instructor Lynn Pickering to find out more A line of walkers snaking across Nonsuch Park is a familiar sight. Look closer and you might spot an unusual addition to their kit - a pair of Nordic walking poles. “You get a lot of the same comments, like ‘ooh, you’ve lost your skis’” says Lynn Pickering jovially, “but it is all said in jest.” Lynn set up Poles Apart four years ago having trained to be a Nordic walking instructor. She runs taster sessions and classes in Nonsuch Park for those looking to learn the techniques of Nordic walking as well as longer fitness sessions for more experienced walkers. Her passion for Nordic walking is infectious as she reveals that she became hooked after watching an interview on television. “I saw an interview on the BBC about Nordic walking and thought it looked just up my street and I would give it a go. “I have always been quite an outdoor person. I cannot bear gyms. I went along because I felt I had to go to stay fit and healthy, but I didn’t like being indoors. Being in open
spaces was where I was always most relaxed. It ticked all my boxes and that’s what led me to do it.” The move towards a different way of exercising and a new career was partly influenced by having a family. Prior to the birth of her children, Lynn worked in central London and faced a lengthy commute to and from her home in Worcester Park. Fitting studying in around the children worked well and, having qualified as an accredited instructor through Nordic Walking UK, the next step was to set up Poles Apart. “The reason for changing my career was the children. I didn’t want to be tied into a position where I would have to do the hours that others wanted. I liked the idea of working my own hours,” says Lynn. “I love the Nordic walking, I love the community aspect that my clients come along and they leave with a smile on their faces. They enjoy it instead of seeing it as a chore to exercise.” Nordic walking is an activity that can be done anywhere, although it originated in Finland in the 1930s. Crosscountry skiers started to use their poles in training during the summer months when there was no snow. They discovered that as well as keeping their heart and lungs in condition it also kept their upper and lower body muscles in shape. “There is a lot more to the poles than people ever imagine,” says Lynn. “As soon as people hold the poles and start walking they can understand the benefit. The poles are a form of resistance, every single time you strike the ground with the pole you are pushing against it. They also help to propel you along increasing your speed.

LOCAL BUSINESS Nordic walking uses 90% of the body’s muscles, and burns more calories than normal walking, so you are getting a really comprehensive workout.” Nordic walking didn’t make it to the UK until early 2000. Then groups like Nordic Walking UK and British Nordic Walking have worked to make it an accessible activity for people of all ages and fitness abilities. And research has shown that as well as being a cardiovascular workout it can help people with neck, back and shoulder pain. “Once you know what you are doing it is a really rhythmic exercise. It can really strike a chord with a very different range of people,” says Lynn. “You can start off slowly with only a gentle push then you can increase it gradually over time, as you build fitness levels. You can also push it really hard. I dropped a couple of dress sizes when I first started and I have seen my body shape change. “Once you use the poles correctly the upper body does some of the work, easing the pressure on lower joints. “It’s also such a social activity. You can talk to people as you do it. It takes you away from all the other things that are going on and you can relax.”

Nordic walking If you’re heading out here’s what you need Footwear: Comfortable footwear that has some grip, suitable for varying terrain such as sand, gravel, mud. Flexible soled shoes that are breathable and waterproof are recommended. Clothing: Rapidly changing weather conditions means layers are essential that way you can add or remove clothing as the temperature dictates. Choose loose fitting clothes as you will be moving your arms and legs throughout so you don’t want to wear anything restrictive. Waterproof jackets and trousers are also a must. Water and rucksack: As you will be walking with poles you will not be able to carry anything in your hands so a rucksack is handy for carrying water, wallets or purses, hats and gloves for when it is cold, sunglasses and suncream for when it is sunny and insect spray for the evenings. Poles: Not to be confused with hiking poles, Nordic walking poles are designed and shaped to support the technique and provide a comfortable grip. The straps are left and right hand specific for comfort and control and are strong enough to withstand push-through. Poles can be adjusted for height to ensure they fit each individual correctly.

CARE AT HOME Range of services offered by mobile vet Many owners and pets dread the traditional trip to the vets whether that be for routine or non-routine appointments. Having spent many years working in a very busy practice I came to realise just how stressful and difficult this can be for both owners and animals. This is why I started Surrey Home Vet – to provide the care your pet needs in the comfort of their own, familiar surroundings. People are often surprised at how many things I can do on a house visit – from clipping your cat’s nails to vaccinations, dressing changes, blood tests or post-op checks. Sometimes we can do more with an animal at home when they are less stressed, than we can in a clinic! When needed, I can transport them to Winton Lodge Vets for advanced diagnostic tests, surgery and treatment. Winton Lodge is run by my husband Simon Neuhoff and a fantastic team of vets, nurses and receptionists. I have been a practicing veterinarian for more than 20 years now. Apart from a love for dogs, I have a special interest in
all things feline and was awarded the European Certificate in Feline Medicine in 2007. I also enjoy advanced dentistry, geriatric medicine, delicate soft tissue surgeries and cardiac ultrasound.

Surrey Home Vet is an independently owned, mobile veterinary clinic offering visits in the local area. Run by local vet Claire Neuhoff, we provide first rate vetenary care for your pets in the comfort of your own home. Our guiding principle is that we offer the same level of care we would want for our own pets. Should your pet need surgical or diagnostic procedures we have the backup of a modern, fully equipped surgery and can therefore provide for every aspect of your pet’s care. 07872 042 047 | info@surreyhomevet.co.uk www.surreyhomevet.co.uk

All THE
WORLD’S A STAGE Drama festival celebrates work of our greatest playwright Images: Shakespeare Schools Festival
Scores of schoolchildren will make their professional stage debut when they take part in a drama festival celebrating the works of William Shakespeare. They will be treading the boards at Leatherhead Theatre in November as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival. A registered charity, Shakespeare Schools Festival has grown into the UK’s largest youth drama festival after starting with just a handful of schools in Wales in 2000. This year 30,000 pupils from more than 1,000 schools are set to perform in 130 theatres across the UK, marking the enduring legacy of Shakespeare’s work and its relevance today, 400 years after his death. Months of preparation and rehearsals will culminate in four nights of performances when audiences will be treated to productions incorporating comedy and tragedy.
“In 2016, if those who already love Shakespeare talk only to others who love Shakespeare, we’ve failed. The challenge of performing, on a professional stage in the West End or in their local town, can transform children’s lives ¬building confidence, literacy and teamwork. To mark his 400th anniversary we should look to the future and equip young people with those life skills, whatever stage they’ll walk onto – be it boardroom, factory floor or operating theatre.” Tickets from £9, concessions £7 are available from the box office.
Shakespeare Schools Festival, Leatherhead Theatre, 7 Church Street, Leatherhead, KT22 8DN, November 14-18, 7pm, 01372 365141 www.theleatherheadtheatre.org
Among the schools taking part are Ewell Castle Senior School, Epsom and Ewell High School and City of London Freeman’s School, Ashtead. Pupils will perform abridged versions of As You Like It, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet. There will also be performances by pupils at Therfield School, Manor House School and Howard of Effingham School in Leatherhead. Shakespeare Schools Festival chief executive Ruth Brock said the importance of Shakespeare is not about the past, but his impact on the next generation.

TRAVELS ON CANVAS
Exhibition of artist John Whurr’s work We have all taken holiday snaps as mementos of the places we have visited doing the course of our travels. With a pencil and pad readily to hand artist John Whurr documents his travels on canvas, capturing the essence of the places he sees with colour and detail. A draughtsman by profession, John says he had an interest in drawing from an early age. Life, a young family and work left little time for him to develop his artistic skills. It wasn’t until about 1980, when the decorating was completed and his two sons were old enough to entertain themselves that he sought to return to his great love of drawing and painting. Fundamental skills in watercolour were learnt at Epsom Further Education Centre over the course of six Saturday mornings. Other than that he is largely self-taught. A member of the Society of All Artists and Molesey Art Society he has had success at their exhibitions as well as considerable success with solo exhibitions, with many of his works going abroad.
32
His love of travel has provided considerable material for his wide-ranging art works, some of which will be on display at an exhibition in Bourne Hall, Ewell, this November and during a special pre-Christmas exhibition running from December 19 to Christmas Eve. Visitors will be able to meet John and find out more about his work and exhibits, which will be on sale throughout the show. His first love is architectural and coastal subjects but for many years his drawing has extended to caricatures, which coupled with a sense of humour, have resulted in cards for birthdays and anniversaries. John accepts watercolour commissions of houses, motorbikes and cars as well as pencil sketches of animals and caricatures for cards.

DR IMOGEN,
director of White Swan Aesthetics, gives her top tips on the most effective and natural looking non-surgical cosmetic enhancements. White Swan have a beautiful clinic in Ooh La La Hair and Beauty in Epsom as well as clinics in Kensington and Harley Street
1. SPARKLE ON THE INSIDE AND OUT – teeth whitening using White Swan’s professional dentist administered system instantly makes your smile brighter and more youthful. Prices from £249. 2. BOTOX BETWEEN THE BROWS – A frown line can make you look tired and angry, this can be easily corrected with a little Botox, giving a natural and fresher appearance. Botox costs £180 for the first area and £50 for every additional area and lasts up to 4 months. 3. TURN THAT FROWN UPSIDE DOWN - as gravity starts to win its battle, the corners of the mouth dip downwards so that it looks ‘sad’ even when the person isn't. A little cleverly placed dermal filler can correct this. When done in combination with plumping out the nose to mouth lines, the anti-aging impact is dramatic. Dermal fillers are £250 per 1ml syringe of the highest quality hyaluronic acid and last up to 9 months. 4. BAT YOUR EYELASHES - with age, eyelashes get thinner and shorter. With White Swan’s prescription eyelash solution, you can grow your own lashes thicker, darker and longer for only £60 for a 10 week supply.

Epsom Players brings tale of demon barber Sweeney Todd to stage
After years in exile for a crime he did not commit Sweeney Todd returns to London to find his daughter living with the corrupt Judge Turpin, the man who tore his family apart. In his rage, the barber exacts his revenge on the people of London, luring customers into his barber shop before casually ending their lives with a flick of his razor and turning them into pies. Starring Kevin Hayes as the demon barber and Sarah Trotman as his business partner and pie-maker Mrs Lovett, the show will delight and chill in equal measure.
