WELCOME
A warm welcome to this pocket guide to Hounslow.
Artonik, Bell Square 2015 ®VipulSangoi
Inside we will be highlighting a selection of the borough’s treasures – whether that’s offering you some of the best places to enjoy a delicious meal or a relaxing coffee, pinpointing a selection of family-friendly attractions and days out or showcasing Hounslow’s stunning, award-winning parks and open spaces. The vibrant and diverse London borough of Hounslow stretches 23sqm from its edges of Heathrow in the west to Chiswick in the east. It is made up of 10 districts – two of which were the towns of Hounslow and Brentford while Isleworth, Osterley, Chiswick, Cranford, Heston, Bedfont, Feltham and Hanworth were originally villages in rural Middlesex. Once considered a retreat from the bustling capital, it became home to many of the nobility who built stately

homes such as Syon House and Boston Manor House and also to successful professionals who chose to make their homes in Chiswick and the villages beyond. The make up of the borough as it is today came about in 1965 and last year Hounslow celebrated 50 years as part of Greater London. It’s a place that can boast its fair share of notable residents, both past and present. English poet Alexander Pope lived near Fuller’s Brewery in Chiswick in the 1760s and the 19th century engineer Isambard Kingom Brunel lived in a house in Cranford while he worked on the Hanwell railway viaduct. The artist Vincent Van Gogh moved to Isleworth when he taught at a local boys’ school and a blue plaque honouring the Dutch painter marks
WELCOME his home, which now sits opposite Isleworth leisure centre. Naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough was born in Isleworth, actors Colin Firth and Hugh Grant have both lived in Chiswick, comedian Jimmy Carr hails from Hounslow and the late Tommy Cooper lived in Chiswick for more than 30 years. Olympic gold medallist, the longdistance running star Mo Farah, lived in Hounslow for much of his childhood and his talent was first spotted as a pupil at Feltham Community College, while other sports stars with links to the area include Olympic rower James Cracknell and tennis player Tim Henman. TV presenters Ant and Dec bought neighbouring properties in Chiswick and sports presenter Clare Balding has a home in the town.
The world of music also owes a debt of gratitude to the borough. The legendary Freddie Mercury and his Queen bandmate Brian May lived in Feltham, while The Who’s Pete Townsend and John Entwistle were both born in Chiswick. The town also lays claim as the birthplace of Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, while Genesis lead singer and drummer Phil Collins and singer Sophie Ellis-Bexter were born in Hounslow and singer-songwriter Elvis Costello attended secondary school in the borough. So what is so special about Hounslow that inspires so much talent and success, entices so many people to want to live here and draws so many visitors every year?

HOUNSLOW
The town of Hounslow has existed since the 13th century and today is perhaps the most multi-cultural part of the borough, with several temples and mosques alongside the area’s many churches. The Sikh Gurdwara Sri Gru Singh Sabha in Alice Way, is open to all, but all visitors must remove their shoes and cover their heads. A community kitchen provides delicious vegetarian lunches for visitors. The Hindu Laxmi Narayan Temple, in Neville Close, is a modern place of worship and its open hall is elaborately decorated with Hindu gods and goddesses. A hub for community events, there is also the chance to sample vegetarian lunches. Non-Muslims can enjoy ‘tea and tour’ open days at the Hounslow Jamia Masjid and Islamic Centre, in Wellington Road South. As well as the chance to learn the role of the mosque within the community, visitors can sample Halal food and see a selection of Islamic art and antiques. A now well-known landmark in the town is the Hounslow War Memorial, unveiled
in 2014 during the 100th anniversary of the First World War, in the High Street. Bell Square, at the western end of the High Street, is the town’s new permanent outdoor space, which is used by some of the world’s top street performers and is also used as an open space for religious and non-religious festivals and celebrations throughout the year. On non-event days it is also home to a weekly street market that stretches along the High Street from Tuesdays to Sundays. New paving, seating, lighting and trees in the High Street have rejuvenated this area in recent years and, in particular, the weekly Hounslow Global Food Market, which takes place Tuesdays to Saturdays offering visitors a wide range of international cuisine from more than 20 different culinary stalls.

BRENTFORD
Brentford grew up as a market town where the River Brent meets the Thames and is a town steeped in Tudor and Jacobean history – and well worth a visit. Among its many jewels is Boston Manor House, a Jacobean manor house dating back to 1623. The three-storey building is set in parkland featuring a lake and ancient cedar trees. The 17th century state rooms can be visited at weekends between April and October free of charge. Also worth a visit is the London Museum of Steam and Water, in Kew Bridge Road. Easily visible by its tall brick tower, it is based in a Victorian water pumping station and gives a fascinating insight into how Londoners got their drinking water. The museum – which boasts a triple expansion steam engine and the waterworks railway, which runs every weekend from Easter each year – is open daily all year round.
Brentford Lock
If football’s your sport then tickets to a game at Brentford FC’s home ground, Griffin Park, is almost certainly a must for visitors. The club, nicknamed the Bees, began in Hounslow in 1889, and is often the first stop for tourists landing at Heathrow. The ground, which still has standing only terraces, has been its home for more than a century, but the Bees are due to be moving to a new 20,000-seater stadium in Lionel Road, near Kew Bridge, in the next few years.
Foodies will certainly relish a visit to the Brentford Sunday Market, a great source of high-quality, locally sourced foods including artisan breads, meats, seafood and cheeses. The market takes place in the square in front of the magistrates’ court between 10am and 2pm. Boston Manor House

ISLEWORTH
This small, Anglo-Saxon village has the Duke of Northumberland river flowing through it and overlooks the teardrop-shaped Isleworth Ait islet. Its most impressive landmark is arguably Syon House which was built on the ruins of an abbey destroyed during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. After coming into the hands of the Percys, the dukes of Northumberland, Syon House has been the family’s London home for more than 400 years.
Its magnificent castle-like structure depicts its Georgian past and has been the location for many films as well as being a popular wedding venue. It sits within Syon Park, home to the Syon Park Garden Centre, which boasts one of the largest collections of English roses.
BEDFONT, FELTHAM & HANWORTH
These three neighbourhoods make up the west of the borough and it is one of the greenest parts of Greater London. They boast three rivers, are part of the vast Hounslow Heath, Bedfont Lakes Country Park and Hanworth Park (see The Great Outdoors - page 19). The medieval St Mary the Virgin Church on the edge of the village
green in Bedfont is the borough’s oldest surviving church. Behind it is the grade II listed Pates Manor, the oldest house in the borough, with one of its wings dating back to 1496.
PLACES OF INTEREST
CRANFORD & HESTON Cranford is bounded by Heathrow airport and the River Crane to the west and the M4 motorway to the north. Most notable is Cranford Park and its mansion, one of the area’s largest properties. The house was demolished in 1945, but historical features such as its 18th century stables, cellars and river bridge can still be seen within this beautiful green space, now a public park. Also worth a visit is the beautiful St Dunstan’s Church, dating back to the 15th century. The church’s oldest bell - cast in 1338 - is believed to have been rung on every occasion of national importance since being first chimed. For centuries Heston, once a Saxon settlement, was a small agricultural village, but when the Great West Road was completed, the farming and market garden lands around the village were snapped up for industry and housing. Today it is a large, residential suburb of Hounslow.
Heston War Memorial
Hillingdon Trail, Cranford
Of particular historical interest is St Leonard’s Church, which dates from the 14th century, and the Heston War Memorial, which remembers local residents killed in battle during the last two world wars.

OSTERLEY
An affluent district north of the Great West Road, Osterley was built on land that once belonged to the Osterley Park and House estate.
Built in the late Victorian and early 20th century era, Osterley expanded rapidly during the 1930s and is famed for its park and mansion. The original building on the site was an Elizabethan manor house built in 1570. Two centuries later and having fallen into disrepair, the house was bought by banker Francis Child as a country
retreat and he employed architect Robert Adam to build the red brick mansion with its white stone detailing and turrets that still stands today. Today both the house and the expansive park are managed by the National Trust, whose cafe and shop are housed in the surviving Elizabethan stables.

CHISWICK
Once a residential village, Chiswick is now the most upmarket part of the borough. At its heart is the bustling Chiswick High Street, an area crammed with modern and vintage furniture shops and gift and home accessory stores as well as an impressive array of cafes and restaurants, many of which have pavement seating giving the area a distinctly cosmopolitan feel. The jewel in Chiswick’s crown has to be Chiswick House and Gardens, a glorious example of 18th century architecture in grounds considered to be the birthplace of the English landscape movement. The house was built in 1729 as a Roman-style Palladian villa, with its design drawn from ancient Italy. Among guests to stay at the

house were Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and the German composer Handel, but despite such an eminent past, by 1892 Chiswick House was being used as a mental institution before it came back into the hands of the Ministry of Works in the 1950s for a muchneeded programme of restoration. Another place of interest is Hogarth House, once the quiet country retreat of the famous English painter William Hogarth. Built in the 1700s the listed house was home to the Hogarth family for 15 years and the artist had a painting room at the bottom of the garden that he used until just days before

If antiques are your thing, then Chiswick is definitely the place for you. The Old Cinema, at 160 High Road, is like Doctor Who’s tardis, with rooms stuffed full of antique, vintage and retro furniture. And if you like the theatrics of an auction then a trip to Chiswick Auctions at 1 Colville Road, is a must. The venue hosts sales of furniture, fine art, antiques and collectables every Tuesday.
If it’s cuisine you are after, and you are in the area on a Sunday, then the weekly Chiswick Food Market is worth a stopoff. Here 25 top producers from around the country come to the market to sell their goods between 10am and 2pm at the Pavilion, in Market Drive, next to Dukes Meadows. Staying on the food and drink theme, another popular landmark is the Fuller’s Griffin Brewery site in Chiswick Lane South. Beer has been brewed there since the days of Oliver Cromwell and today you can take a tour of the brewery to see how Fuller’s makes its beers, soak up a bit of history and enjoy a few samples at the end. THE GREAT OUTDOORS Hounslow’s parks and open spaces represent the highest percentage of green space, in relation to the borough’s size, of any London borough.
Several of its parks have been rated among the best in the UK and have been awarded Green Flag status - a national accolade that recognises and rewards quality and excellent facilities.
Gunnersbury Palace
GUNNERSBURY PARK Situated in the north of the borough, this park is recognised as one of the country’s most important and includes some of the top 10 per cent of historic buildings in England. The estate features a Grade II-listed Regency mansion house - which since 1929 has been home to the Gunnersbury Park Museum - a smaller mansion, an 18th century temple, the Potomac fishing lake with its boathouse folly, an orangery and a castle-styled Gothic bathhouse. The museum showcases local history and
archaeology, costume and fine art but is closed until the summer of 2017 while major restoration work is completed. The park itself includes playing fields, wooded areas, space for cycling and walks, children’s play areas and a cafe.
HOUNSLOW 19
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
SYON PARK This 200-acre park, boasting 600 years of garden history, borders the River Thames in the south and at its centre is Syon House, the London home of the Duke of Northumberland.
Syon Park
Its 100 acres of parkland was created in essence over 20 years by the renowned garden designer Capability Brown in the 18th century. Following an extensive programme of replanting over the past 15 years the number of tree species grown at Syon has risen to more than 400. The park also has a tidal meadow that is flooded twice a day at high tide.
HOUNSLOW HEATH If you are keen to escape the bustle of London, but time pressures do not allow a total escape to the country, then a visit to Hounslow Heath could be your best bet. The heath is recognised as being a place of conservation excellence and is a wonderful place for enjoying the feel of the countryside in the middle of the city. The 200-acre nature reserve comprises lowland heath, grassland, woodland, wetlands and wildflower meadows and offers visitors a large network of paths within a rugged setting. HANWORTH PARK If you’re a fan of long walks, a keen jogger or cyclist, then this 165-acre nature conservation site ticks all the boxes. Formerly a Royal park and palace used by Henry VIII the park is a popular community asset and features a children’s playground. The park is among several in the borough
to have been earmarked as a site for an exciting new outdoor gym project to improve physical activity opportunities for all.
BEDFONT LAKES COUNTRY PARK Another ideal place to escape it all is this award-winning park, a designated nature reserve to the west of the borough.
The 180 acre site features wildflower meadows, woodland and wetlands in an othewise heavily urbanised part of the capital. As well as being home to a wide array of wildlife there are almost 400 species of plants at Bedfont Lakes, as well as a children’s play area which opened last year.
HOUNSLOW 21
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
CRANE PARK NATURE RESERVE A great haunt for lovers of wildlife, this park straddles the boroughs of Hounslow and Richmond and is a mixture of woodland, scrub and reed beds. The park takes its name from the River Crane that flows through it. Once the site of Hounslow gunpower mills, it is home to thriving colonies of woodpeckers, kingfishers, marsh frogs and the rare water vole.
JERSEY GARDENS A visit to Osterley means a chance to spend time in these beautiful gardens created from a disused gravel pit by the local authority in the early 1930s. These gardens were created in a bid to provide a place for public recreation at a time when the area was becoming more densely populated. Highlights of the park are its unique alpine rock garden, a play area and tennis courts. Jersey Gardens

ANNUAL EVENTS BEDFORD PARK FESTIVAL Every June Chiswick hosts one of the capital’s best arts and community events, a two-week festival attracting thousands of people from the area and from further afield. All the fun takes place on the very edge of the borough on Acton Green Common, opposite Turnham Green Tube station where visitors can
enjoy live music, crafts, stalls, and competitions to raise money for local charities.
EAT CHISWICK Launched in 2015 to great acclaim, this week is a must for foodies! Drawing on Chiswick’s rich history of great places to dine, the week-long celebration gives a platform to all of the town’s eateries who showcase special menus and creations. There are walking tours of the local pubs and bars, tours for coffee and sweet treats, and a street market in Chiswick High Road. FOOD & DRINK
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY One thing is for sure, you will never go hungry or thirsty in Hounslow. Food and drink is definitely an important part of the borough, with plenty of choice courtesy of its many and varied international cuisines – with Indian and Sri Lankan foods perhaps the most noted – but there is something to suit everyone’s palate as well as their pockets, with hundreds of
cafés, bars, bistros, takeaways and restaurants to choose from. Picking the best is of course all a matter of taste, but we’ve put together a selection of some of our favourites to help you plan that perfect lunch date, afternoon tea or special celebratory meal.
CHISWICK
La Trompette
La Trompette is an awardwinning restaurant offering excellent, modern European cuisine served by friendly staff – think fine dining without the stuffiness or prices of some central London restaurants. The venue was completely refurbished in 2013 and also offers the option of private dining. Find La Trompette in Devonshire Road, close to Turnham Green Tube station.

FOOD & DRINK Hedone – another Michelin-starred ‘refreshingly unfussy’ restaurant – was recognised in 2015 as the 60 th best restaurant in the world. Its modern European menu stands out for using the best ingredients coupled with intelligent cooking. Hedone is located on Chiswick High Road. Le Vacherin offers authentic, affordable French gastronomy in the heart of west London. Chef Malcolm John aims to provide diners with simple French dishes in an intimate setting, with menus updated regularly. The a la carte option may be a little pricey for some, but with two or threecourse prix fixe menus also available, the restaurant in Chiswick’s South Parade, provides a Parisienne dining experience on a budget.

Annie’s Restaurant, tucked away by the river at Chiswick and Barnes, serves what it likes to call ‘Briterranean’ cuisine, taking its influences as much from comfort food as from fresh, Mediterranean flavours. Serving

FOOD & DRINK The Roebuck in Chiswick High Road is a bright, modern gastropub with rustic tables, serving British cuisine and offering a popular budget lunch deal. Choose from a selection of small or large plates or a sharing platter if you’re with a group of friends enjoying a few drinks. The Roebuck’s garden is a must on a sunny day. Rhythms and Brews is Chiswick’s first vinyl cafe next to Turnham Green. The cafe has a stripped-back feel and as well as serving a great selection of coffees and teas and homemade cakes you can sit back and enjoy music from old vinyl records played on an old-fashioned record player. For something else a little bit different, Chief Coffee, nestled in a quiet mews off Turnham Green Terrace, sits on the site of a Victorian bottling factory, now the home of the iconic furniture store Isokon Plus. As well as serving up speciality coffee in a relaxed and elegant environment, downstairs houses a great feature - a pinball lounge featuring some of the most exciting pinball machines from the late 1990s up to the present day. Tamp Coffee’s mission is to source outstanding coffee and roast it to heavenly perfection. The number one choice for many a coffee afficionado in the area, the cafe in Devonshire Road also serves a selection of tapas and is

a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike. The Italian Job, just down the road, is Britain’s first Italian craft beer pub and offers a dozen micro beers in not just halves but also three-quarter pint measures. The beer on offer draws from Italy’s eclectic craft beer scene and can be complemented with a selection of Italian street food. The George IV pub is widely considered to be one of Chiswick’s top pubs in the heart of the community and if you like a good laugh, it is also home to the Headliners Comedy Club on Friday and Saturday nights. Since it opened as a comedy venue in 2002 the club has put on more than 1,000 shows featuring top names like Al Murray, Michael McIntyre and Sarah Millican.

BRENTFORD If it is high quality food and drink you crave then Boki Coffee in Brentford’s Great West Quarter is definitely worth a visit. The shop’s design is comfortable yet cutting edge and has been shortlisted for restaurant and bar design awards. Its coffee is hand-prepared by the baristas and tea lovers are not overlooked as in many other establishments, with a good selection of traditional and fruit teas on the menu. Boki also serves delicious breakfasts, lunch and cakes and has a large, covered outdoor atrium, which is covered for year-round use. Lan Bianca Marton’s chocolate shop and cafe at 9 London Road is an absolute must for chocaholics. Bianca opened her shop last year after successfully building a loyal following with a stall at Brentford’s Sunday market and now produces an even bigger range of flavours – including dairy and gluten-free chocolates. The cafe at the back of the shop is a quiet haven to enjoy a brew and a slice of homemade cake – or maybe a delicious hot chocolate made using flakes of artisan chocolate.

FOOD & DRINK The Weir, on the riverside, is the perfect place for a relaxing breakfast or brunch and a popular location for a delicious Sunday roast. Head chef Srdjan Kovijanic worked at The Ritz, Quaglinos and Langhan before settling at The Weir more than eight years ago. Last year the gastropub also opened its own cocktail bar which uses the finest spirits and fresh ingredients to offer a unique selection of cocktails – from a classic Bloody Mary to a more unusual Roast Rosemary and Kiwi Mojito. Another riverside favourite is Fuller’s One Over the Ait pub where great views and delicious seasonal dishes combine to give you the perfect dining experience. Just down the road from Kew Gardens in Kew Bridge Road, the venue takes traditional pub grub up a few notches offering intriguing twists on more conventional lunch and dinner favourites. There’s also live music there every Friday night.
The Weir
The beautiful red-brick Old Fire Station restaurant at 55 High Street, is a modern venue specialising in steaks, kebabs and seafood and a tempting array of other dishes, but is also a favourite haunt for those who just fancy a drink. The restaurant’s elegant interior was specially designed to produce a setting worthy of the high standard of its food and service. The South Street Cafe in Lower Square, Old Isleworth, is arguably the place to go in the area for delicious artisan gelato – ice cream that’s made on the premises with fresh and wholesome ingredients. If you’re looking for something a little different than the traditional vanilla, strawberry or chocolate then look no further. Among flavours concocted here in recent months there’s been bacon and maple, blue banana, beetroot, Parma violet, Earl Grey and shortbread and a selection of speciality Thai flavours, including Thai basil, sticky rice and coconut.
